The reef coral Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) was grown for 8 wk in four nutrient treatments: control, consisting of ambient, unfiltered Kaneohe Bay seawater [dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, 1.0 M) and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP, 0.3 M)]; nitrogen enrichment (15 M DIN as ammonium); phosphorus enrichment (1.2 M DIP as inorganic phosphate); and 15 M DIN+1.2 M DIP. Analyses of zooxanthellae for C, N, P and chlorophyll a after the 8 wk experiment indicated that DIN enrichment increased the cellular chlorophyll a and excess nitrogen fraction of the algae, but did not affect C cell-1. DIP enrichment decreased both C and P cell-1, but the decrease was proportionally less for C cell-1. the response of cellular P to both DIN and DIP enrichment appeared to be in the same direction and could not be explained as a primary effect of external nutrient enrichment. The observed response of cellular P might be a consequence of in situ CO2 limitation. DIN enrichment could increase the CO2 (aq) demand by increasing the net production per unit area. Summary Orbweaving spiders obtain much information from web-borne vibrations. One of their major problems is to distinguish relevant vibrations, particularly prey-produced signals, from irrelevant vibrations, particularly wind noise. This problem was studied by measuring the spectral characteristics of prey-and wind-induced web vibrations, and the spider's responsiveness to sinusoidal stimuli. In wind-generated vibration (Fig. 1) signal amplitude is large below 10 Hz and decreases by 30 to 40 dB/decade above the lowest resonance frequency for each type of web vibration. The lowest resonance for transverse vibration is 3 Hz with a 200 mg spider, and 10 Hz for longitudinal and lateral vibration. Below 10 Hz transverse vibration is much larger than the other two types, but this difference decreases at higher frequencies. Most of the amplitude in prey signals is below 50 Hz (Fig. 2), except for buzzing insects such as flies, bees and mosquitoes, whose high wing beats generate significant motion above 100 Hz. The spider's response threshold for sinusoidal stimuli in the prey-catching region of the web (Fig. 3) declines at 20 dB/decade over the range that could be measured (10 to 3,200 Hz for longitudinal, 18 to 560 Hz for transverse and 18 to 320 Hz for lateral vibration). The threshold curve for longitudinal vibration is 10 to 20 dB lower than for the other two types and has a minimum of 7 m RMS near 300 Hz. This difference appears to have a mechanical rather than a sensory basis, due to the better transmission of longitudinal vibration through the web (Fig. 4A). If the effect of the spider on web vibration is also considered, the resulting adjusted threshold curve (Fig. 4B: data available for longitudinal vibration only), shows a continuous decline of approximately 30 dB/decade. A possible mechanism for recognizing prey signals based on spectral information is discussed.  相似文献

Abralia trigonura is a small squid that is an important member of the mesopelagic boundary community around Hawaii. Squids were aged by examining statolith growth increments, and various reproductive parameters were measured. Female longevity is 6 mo, and they become sexually mature at 3.5 mo. Male longevity is the same, but they become sexually mature at 2.5 mo. This species appears to be a multiple spawner, and peculiarities in the number of eggs found in the oviducts suggests that they spawn every few days. Possible advantages of this reproductive mode are examined.  相似文献

Sustained strong offshore winds generate upwelling in the fjords of northern South Georgia. Deepwater plankton is pumped by upwelling towards sandy beaches at the heads of the fjords; calanoid copepods, chaetognaths and pteropods are stranded by the sand filter in large quantities on falling tides. Local benthonic species (harpacticoid copepods and amphipods) are present in the plankton but do not strand. Strandlines are very rich (<4 kg wet mass m-2) and provide large fractions of the food of kelp gulls, sheathbills and terns in the austral summer. Birds can only exploit fresh strandlines, since air-drying of the plankton soon makes it too salty to eat.  相似文献

Age and growth of the alfonsino Beryx splendens from New Caledonia seamounts were determined by examination of whole and sectioned otoliths. One growth-ring (annulus) in the otoliths appears to be laid down each year. It consists of one opaque (summer, fast-growing) zone and one hyaline (winter, slowgrowing) zone. Thin-sections of otoliths revealed daily rings which allowed us to estimate that the formation of the nucleus takes 10 mo. The first annulus following the nucleus is incomplete. Females have a higher growth rate than males. Sexual maturity is reached at the age of 7 to 8 yr for males and 6 yr for females. Maximum age attained would be 20 yr for alfonsino >50 cm in fork length. the results are compared with those from the few other studies on the growth of alfonsino.  相似文献

Feeding, growth and bioluminescence of the thecate heterotrophic dinoflagellate Protoperidinium huberi were measured as a function of food concentration for laboratory cultures grown on the diatom Ditylum brightwellii. Ingestion of food increased with food concentration. Maximum ingestion rates were measured at food concentrations of 600 g C l-1 and were 0.7 g C individual-1 h-1 (1.8 D. brightwelli cells individual-1 h-1). Clearance rates decreased asymptotically with increasing food concentration. Maximum clearance rates at low food concentration were ca. 23 l ind-1 h-1, which corresponds to a volume-specific clearance rate of 5.9x105 h-1. Cell size of P huberi was highly variable, with a mean diameter of 42 m, but no clear relationship between cell size and food concentration was evident. Specific growth rates increased with food concentration until maximum growth rates of 0.7 d-1 were reached at a food concentration of 400 g C l-1 (1000 cells ml-1). Food concentrations as low as 10 g C l-1 of D. brightwellii (25 cells ml-1) were able to support growth of P. huberi. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied with its nutritional condition and growth rate. Cells held without food lost their bioluminescence capacity in a matter of days. P. huberi raised at different food concentrations showed increased bioluminescence capacity, up to food concentration that supported maximum growth rates. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied over a diel cycle, and these rhythmic changes persisted during 48 h of continuous darkness, indicating that the rhythm was under endogenous control.  相似文献

Naturally-occurring lipophilic inducers of larval settlement and metamorphosis wer isolated and identified for Phragmatopoma californica, a gregarious tube worm from southern California. Organic solvent extraction of the sand/organic cement matrix of tubes diminished the inducing capacity of the tube matrix. The inducing capacity was restricted to a single, highly active, HPLC-purified fraction of the organic solvent extract. Chemical analysis of this fraction revealed a mixture of free fatty acids (FFAs), dominated by eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5, 20%), palmitic acid (16:0, 14%) and palmitoleic acid (16:1, 12%). In assays of the nine FFAs that each contributed 3% or more to the active fraction, only 16:1, 18:2, 20:4 and 20:5 induced larval settlement and metamorphosis, while the others were ineffective. The larval response was contact-dependent, highly specific, and concentration-dependent, with a significant response to 16:1 and 20:4 at as low as 10 g FFA spread onto 1 g of sand (surface area 36 cm2). Active FFAs were extracted at approximately 14 g g-1 sand from the tube matrix, although the levels encountered by larvae in nature are believed to be higher.  相似文献

In our field study we analyzed the C and H isotopic and biochemical (C, N, P, protein, lipid, carbohydrate) composition of the jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (collected from the Gulf of Trieste in 1985 to 1986) and its presumed diet-net zooplankton. The mean 13C (-18.8) and D (-58.4) ratios of P. noctiluca showed enrichment in heavy isotopes relative to net zooplankton (2 for carbon and 30 for hydrogen). Both the jellyfish and net zooplankton were characterized by a linear correlation between 13C and D. C. N, P, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate contents of P. noctiluca were low on a dry weight basis as compared to net zooplankton. Significantly lower C:N and C:P ratios were found in jellyfish indicating a greater loss of carbon relative to nitrogen and phosphorus along the passage to a higher trophic level. Isotopic and biochemical evidence indicate that, though collected in nearshore waters, P. noctiluca depended on autochthonous marine organic matter.  相似文献

Concentrations of thallium in phytoplankton (0.02 to 0.8 g g–1), zooplankton (0.03 to 0.5 g g–1) and ichthyoplankton (0.1 g g–1) from the central Pacific were comparable , as were the atomic ratios of thallium to calcium (3x10–6) and to potassium (1x10–6) in those organisms. These relatively constant ratios, plus the biounlimited ocean profile of thallium, indicate that it is rapidly cycled through plankton in the same manner as potassium, its principal biogeochemical analogue. The higher atomic ratios of thallium to potassium in pelagic clays (6x10–6) and ferromanganese nodules (4x10–3) suggest that both biological transport processes and abiotic transport processes influence this trace element's oceanic cycle.  相似文献

Two heavy metal-binding proteins occur naturally in the midgut glands of Carcinus maenas (L.) collected from the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. These proteins, of approximately 27,000 and 11,500 MW (molecular weight) have previously been described as Cd-binding proteins after their induction by high concentrations of cadmium in the laboratory. The 27,000 MW heavy metal-binding protein is bound to about 0.10 g-at of Cd, 0.70 g-at of Zn and 0.31 g-at of Cu per mole of protein; 7.7, 7.9 and 1.1%, respectively, of the soluble Cd, Zn and Cu in the midgut gland are associated with this 27,000 MW protein (6.7, 1.6 and 0.9% of the total midgut gland Cd, Zn and Cu). The 11,500 MW protein is bound to about 0.04 g-at of Cd, 0.37 g-at of Zn and 1.54 g-at of Cu per mole of protein; 29.3, 31.3 and 41.7%, respectively, of the soluble Cd, Zn and Cu in the midgut gland are associated with this protein (25.7, 6.3 and 34.4% of the total midgut gland Cd, Zn and Cu). Two vegetative clones (designated 11/85 and 7/86 in accordance with month/year of collection) of the green macroalga Ulva rotundata were collected in the vicinity of Beaufort, North Carolina, USA. Each was grown in an outdoor continuous-flow system in summer (20°C) of 1986 and late winter (10° to 17°C) of 1987, in irradiances ranging from 9 to 100% of full sunlight, with and without NH 4 + enrichment. Continuous enrichment of influent estuarine water (dissolved inorganic nitrogen 2 M, N:P5) to 8–12 M NH 4 + had only a slight effect on growth rate. Temperature changes of 2 to 3°C had a much greater effect. Prolonged exposure to a given daily irradiance resulted in acclimation, exposure to a given daily irradiance resulted in acclimation, indicated by faster growth of conditioned plants relative to those transferred from a different irradiance. Most of the difference in growth rates between transferred and control plants was attributed to differences in thallus absorptance. Growth was photoinhibited above 40% sunlight at temperatures below 15°C, but not above 20°C. Following interday irradiance transfers, thallus percent dry weight changed in a manner that suggests different response times for photosynthesis and cell division.  相似文献

The infaunal ophiuroid Amphiura chiajei Forbes is a dominant member of the A. chiajei community in Killary Harbour, a fjord-like inlet on the west coast of Ireland. High density populations (700 individuals/ m2) occur in sediments with a silt/clay content of 80 to 90% and organic carbon levels of 5 to 7%. A study of the population dynamics of this species was carried out from November 1985 to October 1988. At the outset, the population consisted of approximately equal numbers of adults and juveniles. By October 1988, the percentage of adults had increased to 95%, with little or no change in the mean annual dersities. However, there was some degree of variability between the mean monthly densities. Such variability may have been due to very low bottom temperatures, resulting in mortality among the older members of the population. Observations suggest that in Killary Harbour the species may attain an age of 10 yr, with an early annual growth rate of 0.5 mm (oral width). Annual recruitment was variable and low, due presumably to intraspecific competition with the adults; recruitment success may be very closely linked to adult mortality. The Killary Harbour findings are considered in the light of what is currently known of similar amphiurid populations in different geographical locations.  相似文献

More than 60 coal samples, predominantly from the principal coalfields of England and Wales (25) and Scotland (30), were analysed for lead by AAS and for stable lead isotopes by ICPMS. While the average lead content of Scottish coal, 23.9mg kg–1, was more than double that of coal from England and Wales, 11.0mg kg–1, the corresponding mean 206Pb/207Pb ratios (± 1 s.d.) were nearly identical, at 1.181±0.011 and 1.184±0.006, respectively. In the light of the lead isotopic signatures of British coals and of both indigenous (206Pb/207Pb 1.17) and imported Australian (206Pb/207Pb 1.04) lead ores, an approach based on estimated lead emissions from these sources and the deconvolution of the historical lead and 206Pb/207Pb records preserved in lake sediments, peat bogs and archival herbage material indicates that coal combustion became an increasingly significant contributor to atmospheric lead deposition in the UK during the period 1830–1930, especially after the onset of Englands decline as a major location of lead mining and smelting in the late19th Century. Since 1930 and the introduction of leaded petrol, the atmospheric 206Pb/207Pb ratio in the UK has been strongly influenced by carexhaust emissions of comparatively 206Pbdepleted lead of predominantly Australian origin, counterbalanced to some extent by coalcombustion emissions of lead, although these have fallen dramatically since the mid1950s. Nevertheless, with the introduction and substantial uptake of unleaded petrol in the UK during the last decade, even the declining releases from coal, along with contributions from other sources, are continuing to affect the atmospheric lead content and 206Pb/207Pb ratio.  相似文献

In situ grazing rates for the mixotrophic dinoflagellate Gymnodinium sanguineum Hirasaka feeding on nanociliate populations of Chesapeake Bay were determined in June and October of 1990 using a gut clearance/gut fullness approach. Recently ingested prey were digested beyond the point of recognition at a rate of 23% h-1. Estimates of in situ ingestion and clearance ranged from 0 to 0.06 prey dinoflagellate-1 h-1 and 0 to 5.8 l dinoflagellate-1 h-1, respectively, with daily removal of ciliate biomass representing 6 to 67% of the 20-m oligotrich standing stock. Daily consumption of ciliate biomass by G. sanguineum averaged 2.5% of body carbon and 4.0% of body nitrogen with maximal values of 11.6 and 18.5%, respectively. Ingestion of ciliates may help balance nitrogen requirements for G. sanguineum and give this species an advantage over purely photosynthetic dinoflagellates in nitrogen limited environments. By preying on ciliates, these dinoflagellates reverse the normal flow of material from primary producer to consumer and thereby influence trophodynamics of the microbial food web in Chesapeake Bay.  相似文献

Laboratory simulation of light-focusing by water-surface waves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A laboratory system has been developed to simulate wave-induced irradiance fluctuations that occur in the top few metres of the sea under sunny surface conditions. A principle of operation is that the fluctuations are produced after refraction of light by water waves generated in the tank. Simulated irradiance consists of repetitive high-amplitude flashes resulting from a lens-effect of the waves. Statistical properties of flashes are similar to those recorded at sea. In our laboratory simulation, the flashes that exceed an amplitude level of 1.5 (where is the time-averaged irradiance) have a mean frequency of about 230 min-1, and a typical duration of 5 to 20 ms. The frequency of the flashes decreases exponentially with increasing amplitude level. The system simulates timeaveraged irradiance comparable to full sunlight at shallow depths (800 mol quanta m-2 s-1 over the visible spectral region), and provides light with a reasonable spectral composition. The simulation method was designed for studying responses of phytoplankton, but applications involving optical aspects can also be foreseen.  相似文献

Energy budgets were determined for small pieces (nubbins) of the coralsPocillopora damicornis, Montipora verrucosa andPorites lobata living at a water depth of 3 m on the fringing reef of Coconut Island, Kaneohe, Hawaii. The budgets were determined for three different types of day: an ideal day with no cloud and an in situ daily integrated irradiance at 3 m of 14.385 E m–2 d–1; a normal day with sporadic cloud cover and daily irradiance of 11.915 E m–2 d–1; and an overcast day with daily irradiance of 6.128 E m–2 d–1. On the ideal day, the energy fixed in photosynthesis was more than that required for respiration and growth of both zooxanthellae and animal components of the association, and there was a predicted loss of between 19.3 and 32.4% of the energy fixed. On a normal day, the total photosynthetic energy fixation was lower and the excess was between 12.1 and 27.9% of the energy fixed. On the overcast day, however, in bothPocillopora damicornis andPorites lobata energy expenditure exceeded photosynthetic energy fixation and the budget was in deficit. Estimates of rate of mucus secretion on an overcast day were derived and, when incorporated into the energy budget, it was predicted that all three species would have a deficit budget, necessitating the catabolism of lipid reserves. From published values for lipid storage in these species it was calculated that the reserves would last from 28 d inPocillopora damicornis to 114 d inM. verrucosa. A model is suggested in which corals draw upon their extensive lipid stores on days of sub-optimal light, replenishing the reserves again when daily light levels are high, and finally excreting the excess energy fixed, as mucus-lipid when the lipid stores are replete.  相似文献

Despite some progress in reducing the average lead level in the USA, the streets of Cincinnati, Ohio, are still contaminated by heavy metals. High levels of heavy metals will have significant unequivocal ecological impacts and pose a potential health hazard. This study evaluates the level of heavy- metal contamination in household dust and examines its relationships with the external environment. Samples of outdoor and indoor dust were collected from middle-income residential homes in the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan District and the metal content was analysed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry. Results showed that the mean levels of lead in outdoor and indoor dusts are 650 g g-1 and 377 g g-1 and the copper levels are 253 g g-1 and 510 g g-1, respectively. The median levels are 156 g g-1 and 139 g g-1 for outdoor and indoor lead dusts and 35 g g-1 and 124 g g-1 for outdoor and indoor copper dusts. The degree of contamination may be ascribable to the age of the dwelling unit and the neighbourhood, the time when the unit was last painted, the presence of pets and the type of space heating. In addition, car exhausts seems to be a possible source of contamination.  相似文献

We compared densities, distributions and size frequencies of massive corals in the genus Porites on five relatively exposed, mid-shelf reefs (50 km offshore) in the central Great Barrier Reef with those on a sheltered inshore reef (10 km offshore). Data included various transect and mapping studies between 1984 and 1990, estimates of size-dependent damage from the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci, estimated densities of herbivorous sea urchins (potential predators of juveniles), and observations of size-specific effects of tropical cyclones. Assemblages of Porites spp. on mid-shelf reefs were dominated by small colonies (2 to 10 cm diam) established either from planula larvae or from small tissue remnants that had survived A. planci predation in the early to mid-1980s. Large colonies (up to 10 m diam) were scarce, except for localized aggregations on terraces at the base of reef slopes (6 to 12 m deep). Extensive space suitable for settlement by coral larvae can be attributed to recurrent cyclones and A. planci outbreaks. Despite low sea urchin predation, the slowly growing Porites juveniles are likely to die from overgrowth by numerous, much faster growing corals. On the sheltered inshore reef, the coral community was dominated by very large (>5 m diam) Porites colonies, several centuries old; recruitment was mainly by fragmentation of large colonies; there was little space available for settlement, and probabilities of juvenile mortality from grazing urchins were high. Differences in settlement and early survival of Porites spp. are exacerbated by different regimes of storm damage. A model is proposed that links wave climate with the size and age reached by corals before dislodgement by storm waves, and which is consistent with observed densities and size-frequency distributions of Porites in sheltered and exposed areas.  相似文献

Balanus balanoides (L.) collected from an area with high heavy-metal run-off contained two different types of granule within the parenchyma cells of the prosoma. X-ray microprobe analysis shows one to be the familiar zinc granule made up of concentric layers and giving major peaks for phosphorus and zinc, and the other to be homogeneous and giving peaks for sulphur and copper. This latter granule is designated the copper granule. Whilst zinc granules are known to be composed of inorganic phosphate, various tests on copper granules in sections and in a granule-rich pellet have shown that the copper is probably complexed with organic matter. The tests also demonstrated the relatively, insoluble (inert) nature of these granules. Although zinc and copper granules were present together in the prosoma, atomic absorption analyses of whole bodies (prosoma+thorax) have shown the level of zinc (50.28 g/mg dry weight) to be much higher than that of copper (3.75 g/mg dry weight).  相似文献

Tigriopus brevicornis (O. F. Müller) were collected in 1992 from rock pools close to U.M.B.S. Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, U.K. and acclimated to various combinations of salinity and temperature for at least 1 wk prior to laboratory experiments. Higher salinities of acclimation enhanced tolerance to high salinity stress, while tolerance of low salinities was hardly affected by acclimation salinity. Acclimation to low temperature (10°C) extended the survivable salinity range for T. brevicornis. High-salinity acclimation enhanced the survivable temperature range. Copepods acclimated to 60 survived significantly lower and higher temperatures than did 34-acclimated individuals. At high temperature, 75-acclimated female copepods had the highest median lethal temperature, 38.9°C. Females were significantly more resistant to high temperatures than males. The copepods were seen to have a very low median lethal temperature when frozen into solid ice for 2 h; 50% mortality occurred at-16.9°C in 10°C, 34-acclimated T. brevicornis. Salinity preference experiments demonstrated an ability to discriminate between salinities differing by as little as 3. Copepods acclimated to 34 chose salinities near their acclimation salinity; individuals acclimated to 5 favoured slightly higher salinities, while copepods acclimated to 60 chose rather lower salinities.  相似文献
