The length-weight relationship of Tilapia zillii Gerv., seasonally collected from Lake Mariut (a brackish-water lake), Egypt, has been studied. It was found that mature fishes are fatter than spent individuals, and that this mainly affects the exponent n (W=a L n). While the females are nearly of equal fatness to the males, a higher value of the exponent n is recorded for the females; this is due to the higher weight of the gonads. The smaller fish are more fecundite than the larger, elder individuals; this is revealed by comparison of the condition factor K and GSI (gonadosomatic index) for ripo and spent fish, respectively.  相似文献

The present study investigated the growth, mortality, recruitment and food habits ofMonacanthus tomentosus. A total of 1038 specimens were collected by beach seine from the seagrass beds of Kotania Bay (Moluccas, Indonesia) from March 1988 to January 1989. Their length-weight relationship wasW=0.011L 3.242. Based on the von Bertalanffy formula, the asymptotic length,L , and growth coefficient,K, were determined as 11.79 cm and 0.86, respectively. Total mortality,Z, was low (2.033). Mean length of minimum capturable size (L c ) was 6.21 cm, and recruitment occurred throughout the year. Food consisted principally of gastropods (21.41%), seagrasses (14.11%), sponges (12.11%), algae (10.82%), amphipods (9.76%) and sedentary polychaetes (9.29%). Pelecypods, opisthobranchs, isopods, copepods, ostracods, foraminiferans, bryozoans, ascidians, nematodes, mollusc eggs and fish eggs were found only in small percentages.  相似文献

Parrotfishes are important components of the herbivore and detritivore guilds of tropical and subtropical reefs. Most of parrotfish species are protogynous hermaphrodites that change colour and sex, from initial phase females or males (IP) to terminal phase males (TP). We studied the foraging behaviour of Sparisoma amplum, S. axillare and S. frondosum, three syntopic scarids on the rocky reefs of Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Tropical West Atlantic. The three parrotfish species differed in food selection and preference, but IP and TP individuals of the same species preferred the same food types, except for S. amplum. Feeding rates of IP individuals were higher than those of TP individuals, but the distribution of feeding frequencies throughout the day of IP and TP individuals of the same species was similar. IP individuals had higher feeding rates than TP ones, which seems related to the fact that TP individuals spend a large amount of time patrolling their territories and chasing away conspecific individuals at the study site. The general foraging pattern we found for S. amplum, S. axillare and S. frondosum is similar to patterns found for other parrotfish species in the Western Atlantic.  相似文献

Nine genera of neritic tropical copepods were collected near Lime Cay, Jamaica, between July 1985 and January 1987. Length-weight regressions were derived for each genus (R 2=0.74 to 0.98), for all calanoids combined (R 2=0.88), and all cyclopoids combined (R 2=0.85). Width-weight regressions were also derived for the same genera but coefficients of determination were generally lower (R 2=0.52 to 0.98) and were much lower forOithona spp. (R 2=0.21). Over a 12 mo period, biomass estimates generated from these length-weight regressions differed by only 3% from direct weight determinations. There were no significant annual variations in prosome lengths for copepodite Stages 1 to 5 inCentropages velificatus, Paracalanus aculeatus orTemora turbinata; prosome lengths in femaleT. turbinata did significantly vary seasonally. No significant seasonal differences in length-weight relationships were observed forC. velificatus. The mean ash content of mixed copepod samples was 6.4%, and the energy density was 25.0 kJ g–1 AFDW. No significant loss of weight was observed 10 mo after preservation in 10% formalin.  相似文献

The weight-length relationship in fish juveniles was investigated theoretically, to assess the significance of the allometric factor and the validity of the condition factor; these biological factors often remain undetermined, because most fishery studies have been conducted for commercial-sized and/or adult populations. The exponent b (allometric factor) seemed to be the main parameter, performing a key role in the equation W=aL b , where W=weight, a is a constant and L=length. The parameters a (condition factor) and K (ponderal index; K=103 W/L 3) were judged to be less important in comparative studies, since these parameters were closely correlated with b. It is recommended that the assumed theoretical value of b=3 not be used in applied ichthyological surveys, since this value was rarely obtained in the studies, and since a much wider range is usually seen. These analyses led to a new working hypothesis — not yet verified — which opens a new approach to understanding the biological significance of the allometric factor. This approach involves the fractal theory (where b may be considered as a fractal dimension equivalent) linked to the theory of saltatory ontogeny [where b is a threshold characteristic in the (early) life history of fishes].  相似文献

Growth and development rates were determined for nauplii of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) in the near-shore waters of a western Norwegian fjord from in situ mesocosm incubations. The major food source for the nauplii was diatoms, but Phaeocystis sp., dinoflagellates and ciliates were also part of the diet. At local temperatures ranging from 4.8 to 5.2 °C the cumulative median development time from hatching to Nauplius VI was 19 d. The time taken to molt to the next naupliar stage was approximately constant (3 d) from Stages IV to VI, but Stage III needed the longest development time (5 d). The instantaneous growth rate in terms of body carbon was negative from hatching to Nauplius Stage II, but as high as 0.25 to 0.30 d−1 from Stage III to V. Enhancement of food resources by nutrient addition led to no significant change in specific growth rates. Additionally, the cohorts from different nutrient regimes showed almost equal development time, size and body carbon within stages. Length–weight relationships of nauplii from the two different food resources were: W low resources = 4.17 × 10−6 × L 2.03 (r 2 = 0.84) and W high resources = 4.29 × 10−6 × L 2.05 (r 2 = 0.92), where weight (W) is in micrograms of C and body length (L) in micrometers. The natural body morphology of naupliar stages I to VI is illustrated with digital images, including the final molt from Nauplius VI to Copepodid Stage I. In general, development of the nauplii was faster than that of the copepodids of C. finmarchicus, and structural growth was exponential from naupliar stages III to VI. This study validates our earlier results that nauplii of C. finmarchicus can obtain high growth and nearly maximal developmental rates at relatively low food levels (∼50 μg C l−1), suggesting that nauplii exhibit far less dependence on food supply than copepodids. The role of zooplankton in a tropical seagrass ecosystem was investigated in milkfish farms pollution-impacted and -unimpacted seagrass beds in Santiago Island coral reefs, Northwestern Philippines. The aim was to compare between the two sites: (1) abiotic factors and zooplankton community parameters, and (2) the trophic structure using C and N stable isotopes. Low water (98–119?mV) and sediment (–121 to ?138?mV) Oxidation Reduction Potential values indicated a reducing environment in the impacted site. Zooplankton in the impacted site showed the typical community response to eutrophication (low diversity, but high total abundance due to the dominance of the cyclopoid copepod Oithona oculata), generally few elevated δ15N values, but a significant shift towards depleted 13C due to the organic enrichment of fish-farm feeds. Apart from suggesting a highly complex food web with POM and zooplankton as main food sources in the unimpacted site, the Bayesian mixing model simulation generated reduced complexity in feeding interactions between basal sources, zooplankton, and fish including adults of a key fish species, Siganus fuscescens, in the impacted sites. In this study, C and N stable isotope analysis has clarified the importance of zooplankton as fish prey in a seagrass bed food web.  相似文献

Growth of Pandalus borealis post-larval stages was measured in relation to size and temperature. Growth characteristics, including intermolt period (IP), molt increment (MI) in size and mass, and tissue allocation in juvenile, male, and female shrimp, were evaluated at 2, 5, and 8°C, the temperature range where this species is generally found in the Northwest Atlantic. Significant variations in growth were associated with temperature and shrimp size. IP (days) increased significantly with shrimp size and was inversely related to temperature. Size (cephalothorax length in mm) and temperature effects were best described by IP = 10(0.67 log(CL) − 0.06 T − 1.34). The pronounced effect of temperature on IP while MIS changed little indicated that the main influence of temperature on growth rate of P. borealis was through IP. Specific growth rate (SGRS) decreased rapidly with size to near zero values in females. Overall, juveniles were much more sensitive to temperature variations than adults, suggesting that temperatures encountered during the juvenile stage will largely influence the growth trajectory of the population.  相似文献

三峡水库香溪河库湾氮磷分布状况及沉积物污染评价   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
为了解三峡大坝蓄水完成之后香溪河库湾水体及沉积物中氮、磷的分布状况以及沉积物污染水平,2013年4月对三峡水库香溪河库湾进行调查采样,测定表层水及沉积物中氮磷含量和形态组成。结果表明,香溪河库湾表层水总磷(TP)含量范围为0.20~0.51 mg·L~(-1),总氮(TN)含量范围为0.54~2.25 mg·L~(-1),TP主要由磷酸盐(PO_4~(3-))组成,TN主要由硝酸盐(NO_3~-)以及氨氮(NH_4~+)组成,TP在空间上呈现从河口向库尾逐渐升高的分布格局,TN分布从河口向库尾逐渐降低。香溪河库湾沉积物中TP含量变化范围为642~1 189 mg·kg~(-1),TN含量变化范围为867~1 718 mg·kg~(-1),沉积物TP含量分布呈现上游高下游低,沉积物TN分布趋势呈现中间高,两头低。沉积物中TP主要由无机磷(IP)组成,有机磷(OP)所占比例较小,其中IP由钙磷(Ca-P)、铁铝磷(Fe/Al-P)组成,三者含量:Ca-POPFe/Al-P,且沉积物TP含量空间变化受到三者影响(P0.05)。采用单一因子标准指数法对香溪河库湾沉积物中TN、TP污染水平进行评价,结果表明,表层沉积物中TN、TP最低级别污染指数平均值为2.0和1.6,表层沉积物中TN、TP污染指数均超过最低污染水平,且TP的严重级别污染指数达到0.5以上。三峡水库三期蓄水完成以后,香溪河库湾表层水体中氮磷含量较初期蓄水有所升高,各样点沉积物中氮磷含量表现出相同的趋势,沉积物中不稳定磷释放对水体富营养化具有影响,香溪河库湾的表层沉积物已经受到一定的污染,磷污染水平较高。  相似文献

This paper reveals a substantial capacity for herbivory of seaweeds in the gammarid amphipod Aora typica, adults eating seven of ten taxonomically and morphologically diverse seaweed species offered to them in a no-choice assay. The green algae Ulva spathulata and Enteromorpha intestinalis were consumed at the highest rates in both no-choice (2.3–2.5 mg blotted weight individual−1 day−1) and multiple-choice assays (0.5–1.3 mg blotted weight individual−1 day−1). Adult A. typica collected from two different species of brown seaweeds had very similar feeding preferences to each other. Juvenile A. typica grew to reproductive maturity on the green algae E. intestinalis and U. spathulata, and the brown algae Carpophyllum maschalocarpum and Ecklonia radiata. In common with previous studies on members of other amphipod families, survivorship of juvenile amphipods was positively correlated with feeding preferences of adults across seaweed species (r 2=0.43, P=0.04). However, densities of A. typica on seaweeds in the field (excluding the intertidal E. intestinalis and U. spathulata) were not significantly correlated with feeding preferences of adults (r 2=0.07, P=0.5) or survivorship of juveniles (r 2=0.17, P=0.31). This suggests that either host seaweeds are not a major dietary component of these amphipods in nature, or that the host’s value as a food source is overridden by other properties such as the degree of shelter it affords from larger consumers. This study provides the first demonstration that a member of the cosmopolitan amphipod family Aoridae is capable of consuming a diverse range of seaweeds.  相似文献

Red morwong (Cheilodactylus fuscus; Cheilodactylidae: Perciformes), are large temperate rocky reef fish that are patchily distributed in local aggregations of 3 to >100 fish. The home ranges and aggregating behaviour of red morwong were investigated using external tags (n = 114, over 35 mo) and ultrasonic transmitters (n = 9 over 20 d) at coastal and estuarine sites in south-east Australia. Adult red morwong had a mean home range during the day of 1865 m2 (SE = 268). Night movement, determined by ultrasonic telemetry, indicated a significantly greater mean home range of 3639 m2 (SE = 416). Home range did not differ significantly with size or sex. Fish movements were greatest and aggregation sizes varied most during the non-reproductive mid-summer period. Tagged fish (N = 20) displaced 200 to 900 m returned in 1 to 3 d to the point of capture, often traversing open sand habitat and other aggregations. During the day, fish were commonly found on bouldered habitat. During the night, these site-specific aggregations fragmented as fish dispersed over a variety of substrata, with crepuscular peaks in activity. An automatic recording apparatus for measuring the filtration rate in suspension-feeding bivalves is described. The concentration of algae in the experimental medium is kept constant throughout each experiment by addition of Phaeodactylum tricornutum from a chemostat. Within the range of body size 5.7 to 283 mg (W=dry weight of tissues), the filtration rate (F=ml min-1) at 15°C in Mytilus edulis L. follows the allometric equation F=0.85 W 0.72. Within the concentrations 0.18 to 0.70 mg algal dry weight l-1, the filtration rate in mussels of 132 mg dry flesh weight ranges from 33.1 to 41.0 ml min-1. At 0.18 mg algal dry weight l-1 the mussels filter continuously for 20 h, with a high constant rate that presumably represents the water transport capacity under optimal laboratory conditions.  相似文献

The availability of food resources has been suggested as a major factor in the substantial increase in reproductive output, survival, recruitment and, ultimately, population growth rates in most organisms. In fact, the artificial increase in food availability resulting from human activities has been suggested as a factor in the substantial increase in population size of several seabirds in recent decades. In the present study, our primary aim was to estimate the importance of the main natural prey and two alternative feeding resources, fishery discards and the invasive American crayfish Procambarus clarkii, for an opportunistic seabird, the Audouin’s gull Larus audouinii. We also assessed the influence of age and sex in the use of those three types of food. For this purpose, we compared the analyses of δ15N and δ13C in blood of male and female adults of known age and chicks with those in their potential prey. Our results reveal sex-related and age-related differences in the consumption of fish discards, small pelagic fish and American crayfish. Differences in the diet of males and females and also between adults and chicks could be related to different nutritional requirements. Age differences were probably related to their different foraging proficiency and the tendency of young breeders to opportunistically exploit anthropogenically derived food. This study illustrates the importance of considering the age and sex of individuals to obtain feasible dietary information and to understand how the exploitation of food of human origin could affect population growth.  相似文献

In laboratory experiments, measurements of ingested ration, assimilated ration and assimilation efficiency in the polychaete Lanice conchilega (Pallas) were carried out at 12°C and at a food concentration of 40x106 cells of Dunaliella marina/l. Over periods of 20 to 46 days, the ingested ration was determined photometrically by the continous automatic recording apparatus described by Winter (1973). The assimilated ration was calculated from the calorific content of the food ingested minus the calorific content of the faeces produced. Within the range of body size investigated (1.3 to 35.0 mg dry-tissue weight), the food intake (=filtration rate=F) was found to be a linear function of body size (W) according to the equation F=0.88 W 0.32. The daily food intake-expressed as percentage of dry-tissue weight-decreased from 35.7 to 3.9% with increasing body size. The assimilation efficiency was found to vary between 70.6 and 77.2% and showed no significant correlation with body size. The absolute amounts of food retained from suspension and the assimilation efficiencies calculated for L. conchilega are within the range typical for obligatory suspension-feeding organisms. The natural diet, rate of foregut clearance and diurnal activity of the crab Scylla serrata were determined. The gut volume is related to size of crab as gut volume (ml)=0.07e0.033x , where x=carapace width in millimetres. Fifty per cent of crabs collected in Australia and South Africa contained molluscan remains and about 21% contained crustacean remains — chiefly grapsid crabs. Fish remains were rarely found, and it was concluded that S. serrata does not normally catch mobile forms such as fish and penaeid prawns. Gut clearance of organic tissue was rapid and almost complete after 12 h. Fish bone was retained for a mean time of 2 to 3 days, and shell for 5 to 6 days. Time-lapse photography, using infra-red light, was used to record activity. Visible light flashes reduced activity. S. serrata remained buried during the day, emerging at sunset to spend the night feeding, which occurred intermittently even when unlimited food was available. If no food was present the amount of time spent on the substrate surface was halved.  相似文献

Marine toxins generated by harmful algal blooms can be transferred through the marine food web and ultimately cause massive deaths of piscivorous predators. However, very few studies have explored the processes of accumulation and biotransformation of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) within fishes. White seabream (Diplodus sargus) were orally challenged with contaminated cockles (Cerastoderma edule) containing N-sulfocarbamoyl and decarbamoyl toxins and non-contaminated cockles afterwards. Specific PSTs that occurred in low abundance in cockles (B1 7.6% and dcSTX 1.6% molar fraction) were the only toxins detected in fish viscera possibly resulting from selective elimination and transformation of the various PSTs. Concentration of toxins progressively increased in fish viscera throughout the uptake period. Toxins were then rapidly depurated (B1 0.905 day−1, dcSTX 0.467 day−1) when diet was changed to non-toxic cockles. Results indicate conversion of a precursor toxin into B1 which in turn might be converted into dcSTX at a lower extent. Low accumulation efficiency of 1.7 and 5.0% was calculated to B1 and dcSTX, respectively. This study contributes to a better understanding of dynamics of PSTs in fish and the fate of these compounds in the marine food web.  相似文献

Studies on the relative growth and production of the estuary grouper Epinephelus salmoides Maxwell were conducted in floating net-cages at 5 different stocking densities to determine the optimal level for stocking for commercial culture. The fish were stocked at densities of 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 fish per m3, and reared for a period of 8 months. Results of the present study indicated that fish stocked at a density of 60 fish m-3 grew equally fast and showed a food conversion ratio, mortality rate, and condition factor comparable to those at the lower stocking densities of 15 and 30 fish m-3. At the end of the experiments, net-yield and production at this level of stocking density (60 fish m-3) were not significantly different from those at the higher stocking densities of 90 and 120 fish m-3, but showed increases of 86.7% over those at a stocking density of 30 fish m-3 and 294.2% over those at a stocking density of 15 fish m-3. The stocking density of 60 fish m-3 is therefore taken as the optimal stocking rate for economical production of estuary groupers in floating net-cages. The estuary groupers take 7 to 8 months to grow from 15–16 g to marketable size (>500 g) at a stocking density of 15 fish m-3, 8 to 9 months at a stocking density of 30 to 60 fish m-3 and 11 to 12 months at 90 to 120 fish m-3.  相似文献

The growth rates of two fish species, the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum) (19.3 to 42.6 mm total length, TL) and the tautog Tautogaonitis (Linnaeus) (23.9 to 55.9 mm TL), were used to evaluate habitat quality under and around municipal piers in the Hudson River estuary, USA. Growth rates were measured in a series of 10 d field caging-experiments conducted at two large piers in the summers of 1996 and 1997. Cages (0.64 m2) were deployed along␣transects that stretched from underneath the piers to beyond them, encompassing the pier edge (the transitional zone between the pier interior and the outside). Growth in weight (G w ) was determined at five locations along the transect, 40 m beneath the pier, 20 m beneath the pier, at the pier edge, 20 m beyond the pier edge, and 40 m beyond. Under piers, mean growth rates of winter flounder and tautogs were negative (xˉG W  = −0.02 d−1), and rates were comparable to laboratory-starved control fishes (xˉG W  = −0.02 d−1). In contrast, mean growth rates at pier edges and in open waters beyond piers were generally positive (xˉG W ranged from −0.001 to +0.05 d−1), with growth at pier edges often being more variable and less rapid than at open-water sites. Analyses of stomach contents upon retrieval of caged fishes revealed that dry weights of food were generally higher among fishes caged at open-water stations ( range = 0.02 to 0.72 mg dry wt) than at pier-edge ( range = 0.01 to 0.54 mg) or under-pier ( range = 0.03 to 0.11 mg) stations, although it was apparent that benthic prey were available at all stations on the transect. Our results indicate poor feeding conditions among fishes caged under piers, and suboptimal foraging among fishes caged at pier edges. Inadequate growth rates can lead to higher rates of mortality, and, based on these and other earlier experiments, we conclude that under-pier environments are poor-quality habitats for some species of juvenile fishes. Panulirus penicillatus (Olivier, 1791) (Decapoda: Palinuridae) is the most common spiny lobster in the Red Sea and is widely distributed in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Lobsters (n=377) were collected on four occasions during 1986 on the coral reef at Dahab, Sinai, Egypt. Average size of the collected individuals was 70.5±24.6 mm carapace length (CL) for males and 63.2±15.9 mm CL for females. The sex ratio was 1:1.64 males to females. Length increment per molt was inversely correlated with size and ranged from 2.1 mm per molt in the 40 to 50 mm CL size class to less than 1 mm in the 60 to 70 mm CL size class. Average intermolt period was ca. 136 d for all size classes. The relationship between carapace length and body weight was expressed by the equation:W b=6.43 × 10–4 × (CL)2.89.P. penicillatus from Dahab differ in size, sex ratio and growth rate compared to other palinurid populations throughout their range. This might represent the effect of isolation and location at the edge of the geographical range for this species. It may also indicate an adaptation to their unique habitat in the coral reef in comparison to other palinurid species.  相似文献

Regular daylight sampling over 13 mo (February 1985–February 1986) in and adjacent to intertidal forested areas, in small creeks and over accreting mudbanks in the mainstream of a small mangrove-lined estuary in tropical northeastern Queensland, Australia, yielded 112 481 fish from 128 species and 43 families. Species of the families Engraulidae, Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Clupeidae and Atherinidae were numerically dominant in the community. The same species, with the addition ofLates calcarifer (Latidae).Acanthopagrus berda (Sparidae) andLutjanus agentimaculatus (Lutjanidae) dominated total community biomass. During high-tide periods, intertidal forested areas were important habitats for juvenile and adult fish, with grand mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 3.5±2.4 fish m–3 and 10.9±4.5 g m–3, respectively. There was evidence of lower densities and less fish species using intertidal forests in the dry season (August, October), but high variances in catches masked any significant seasonality in mean fish biomass in this habitat. On ebb tides, most fish species (major families; Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Atherinidae, Melanotaeniidae) moved to small shallow creeks, where mean (±1 SE) low-tide density and biomass were 31.3±12.4 fish m–2 and 29.0±12.1 g m–2, respectively. Large variances in catch data masked any seasonality in densities and biomasses, but the mean number of species captured per netting in small creeks was lowest in the dry season (July, August). Species of Engraulidae and Clupeidae, which dominated high-tide catches in the forested areas during the wet season, appeared to move into the mainstream of the estuary on ebbing tides and were captured over accreting banks at low tide. Accreting banks supported a mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 0.4±0.1 fish m–2 and 1.7±0.3 g m–2, respectively, at low tide. There were marked seasonal shifts in fish community composition in the estuary, and catches in succeeding wet seasons were highly dissimilar. Comparison of fish species composition in this and three other mangrove estuaries in the region revealed significant geographic and temporal (seasonal) variation in fish-community structure. Modifications and removal of wetlands proposed for north Queensland may have a devastating effect on the valuable inshore fisheries of this region, because mangrove forests and creeks support high densities of fish, many of which are linked directly, or indirectly (via food chains) to existing commercial fisheries.Contribution No. 493 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献
