Eleven mesopelagic fish species from the Weddell/Scotia Sea region of the Antarctic captured during the austral spring 1983, austral fall 1986, and austral winter 1988, were analyzed for proximate composition. Water, ash level, protein, lipid and carbohydrate were examined in relation to depth of occurrence and season. No depth-related trends were evident, primarily due to a low species diversity and minimal differences in those species' vertical distributions. The Antarctic speciesElectrona antarctica showed a significant increase in lipid level (% wet wt and % ash-free dry wt) between spring, fall and winter. The increase may signify an accumulation over the productive season, possibly as a reserve for the winter months. Lipid levels (% wet wt and % ash-free dry wt) were significantly lower in the Weddell Sea specimens examined in this study than in previously examined identical and congeneric species taken during the same season from a more productive near-shore Antarctic region. Comparisons with congeners and confamilials from tropical-subtropical and temperate systems revealed variable trends. The Antarctic speciesE. antarctica andCyclothone microdon had lower water and protein (% wet wt) levels than similar species from tropical-subtropical or temperate regions. Lipid levels of the two species are similar to temperate individuals, while energy levels are slightly higher. In contrast, species of the genusBathylagus show no trends in composition as a function of latitude. Differences in productivity, water-column temperature-structure, and seasonality are important considerations when examining trends among mesopelagic species.  相似文献

The proximate composition of 33 species of mesopelagic fishes collected from the eastern Gulf of Mexico during May–June 1984, July–November 1985 and January 1986 was determined. Water level increased and ash-free dry weight (% dry weight) and protein level (% wet weight) decreased with increasing species' minimum depth of occurrence (that depth below which 90% of a species' population lives). Lipid level (% wet weight or % ash-free dry weight), did not change with species' minimum depth of occurrence. Skeletal ash level (% wet weight) generally decreased with minimum depth of occurrence, whereas carbohydrate level did not change with depth. The variable water level, low lipid level, and high protein level in eastern Gulf of Mexico fishes resulted in a low energy content. These results are generally characteristic of fishes from warm, stable regions of low productivity, such as the eastern North Pacific Gyre. The constant food supply provided by a stable environment may obviate the need for large lipid reserves, in contrast to colder waters at higher latitudes where food availability is seasonal. In addition, the large energy requirements for diel excursions into high-temperature surface waters by the many vertically migrating fishes of this region may influence lipid deposition. The relatively high protein level found in migrators compared to that in non-migrators or weak migrators indicates that locomotory demands influence the percentage of protein found in Gulf fishes. The lack of a positive correlation between protein level and the food availability of a zoogeographic region, suggested in previous studies, is supported here.  相似文献

Coelenterazine, a luciferine, and luciferase activity specific to coelenterazine were detected and assayed in various tissues of mid-water fishes, Argyropelecus hemigymnus, Chauliodus sloani, Myctophum punctatum, Vinciguerria attenuata and Cyclothone braueri. Coelenterazine was found mainly in digestive systems and photophores of these fishes. A large species to species variation was found: extremely high levels of coelenterazine and luciferase were found in the M. punctatum digestive system whereas only a very low level of coelenterazine was detected in C. braueri. Coelenterazine was detected in A. hemigymnus eggs supporting the hypothesis of a maternal transfer of luminous capabilities. Luciferase activity specific to coelenterazine was found in photophores as well as in various other tissues suggesting another (besides light emission) biological function for this enzymatic activity. Distribution of coelenterazine in all tissues of the individuals supports the hypothesis of the dietary acquisition of coelenterazine by these fishes.  相似文献

Stomach contents were analysed from the 7 most numerous species of mesopelagic fish caught in a series of 11 hauls over a 24 h period at 230 to 266 m depth in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean. The numerical abundance of organisms per filled stomach and the frequency of occurrence of empty stomachs were used to indicate feeding periodicity. The ecological significance of the feeding periodicity was considered by examining it in connection with an investigation of the day-night vertical distribution of zooplankton and micronekton to 2000 m at the same station. Additional dietary evidence on the 7 species considered was also obtained from the vertical series. Feeding selectivity was examined by comparing the composition of the zooplankton population, sampled separately but simultaneously with the micronekton, with that from the overall stomach contents of the species examined. Feeding periodicity was demonstrated for 6 species, of which 3 were found to be feeding selectively: Valenciennellus tripunctulatus on calanoid copepods, Argyropelecus aculeatus on ostracods, and Lampanyctus cuprarius on amphipods and possibly euphausiids. The limited data available on the other 3 species suggested that they were either random feeders (A. hemigymnus and Lobianchia dofleini) or perhaps selecting against a particular group (Notolychnus valdiviae). No indication of feeding periodicity or selectivity was found for Chauliodus danae. The overall pattern of results confirmed the supposed close correlation between vertical migration and feeding in mesopelagic fish.  相似文献

An exceptionally large midwater trawl (50 m2 mouth area) with 5 opening and closing codends was towed horizontally in the lower mesopelagic zone at depths of 500, 650, 800 and 1000 m off Oregon (USA) from 1–6 September, 1978. In comparison to more conventional trawls, ours collected more fish, including rare species and large individuals of common species. Comparison of collections made by day and by night revealed that 12 of the 15 most common species probably migrated vertically. Bathylagus milleri evidently migrates from 650 m during the day to 500 m at night. Cyclothone acclinidens and C. atraria were more abundant by night than by day at 800 m, possibly due to an upward migration from deeper depths at night. C. pseudopallida, C. signata, Chauliodus macouni, Tactostoma macropus and Stenobrachius leucopsarus were more abundant by day than by night at 500 m, suggesting that they migrated out of this depth horizon at night. Lampanyctus regalis, and large individuals of B. pacificus were more abundant by night than by day at 500 m, possibly because they migrated upward from near 650 m. Many species exhibited trends of increasing or decreasing size with depth, and several species showed changes in migratory behavior with size. For example, only small (<240 mm) T. macropus migrated vertically, whereas only large (>110 mm) B. pacificus appeared to migrate. Depths of maximum abundance of congeneric species were usually separated. B. milleri and B. pacificus had similar distributions by day, but the former was shallower at night. S. leucopsarus tended to live shallower than S. nannochir both day and night. Congeners always occurring at the same depth were Cyclothone pseudopallida and C. signata (both most abundant at 500 m) and C. acclinidens and C. atraria (both most abundant at 800 m).  相似文献

The proximate and elemental chemical compositions of 25 species of pelagic decapod and mysid crustaceans collected from the eastern Gulf of Mexico (27°N; 86°W, 1984 to 1989) was examined. Water level ranged from 63 to 95% and increased slightly with species' increased depth of occurrence. Protein levels were generally high (1.5 to 18.3% wet wt, WW; 27.6 to 62.4% ash-free dry wt, AFDW) and comprised the primary organic component in the majority of species. Protein, both as % WW and % AFDW, decreased with increased depth of occurrence. In contrast to protein, lipid levels were low (0.5 to 8.9% WW; 5.7 to 60.9% AFDW), and increased with increased depth of occurrence. Carbon and nitrogen best mirrored measured lipid and protein levels when considered as non-protein carbon and non-chitin nitrogen, respectively. C:N ratios increased with increased depth, consistent with changes in protein and lipid with depth. Because of their compositional attributes, resident Gulf of Mexico species have a low total wet weight energy content relative to species from more productive regions. Energy content showed no significant trend with depth. Vertical migration patterns were distinctly different between shallow-and deep-living gulf species and these differences were largely responsible for the relationships observed between composition and depth. In migrating species, the protein and nitrogen content were higher, the lipid and carbon contents and C:N ratio lower, than in non-migrating species. Three deep-living species of the genus Acanthephyra were found to be compositionally atypical, resembling shallow, migrating types rather than other deep-living, non-migratory species.  相似文献

Scallops (Placopecten magellanicus Gmelin) were collected during August 1989 from shallow water (10 m) and deep water (31 m) habitats at Sunnyside, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, to compare the lipid composition of eggs and adductor muscle tissue. Less favorable food levels and lower temperature conditions associated with deeper water have previously been shown to produce slower growth and reduced fecundity in individuals from this habitat. Triacylglycerol reserves consistently accounted for 60% of the total lipids present in both groups. The total lipid content of the eggs and the composition of their triacylglycerol fatty acid pools were similar in shallow water and deep water scallops, indicating very little if any nutritional difference between the two groups. Relative to their counterparts from shallow water, individuals from deeper water contained higher proportions of docosahexaenoic acid [22:6(n-3)] in the egg phospholipids and higher levels of 24-methylenecholesterol (a phytosterol commonly found in diatoms) in the adductor muscle. Differences in fatty acid composition are interpreted as biochemical adjustments of cell membranes to increase membrane fluidity, thereby compensating for the lower temperatures prevailing at the greater depth.  相似文献

The peculiar limpet-like morphology of the genus Colobocentrotus is unique among the regular echinoids. This shape has been interpreted as an adaptation to life in areas of extreme wave exposure. In this study the attachment strength of C. atratus is compared with that of three sympatric species, Echinometra mathaei, Heterocentrotus trigonarius and Stomopneustes variolaris, which have more typical echinoid morphology and live in different microhabitats. For each species, the adhesion of individual sea urchins was measured as well as the tenacity of single tube foot and the mechanical properties of the tube foot stems. Colobocentrotus always presented the highest measured values, although not always significantly different from those of the other species. Of the mechanical properties of the stem measured, the stem extensibility was the only property that was significantly different among species. In general the stems of all the species studied became more extensible and more difficult to break with increasing strain rate, providing an adaptative advantage to the sea urchin when subjected to rapid loads such as waves. In terms of single tube foot tenacity, C. atratus tube feet attached with a tenacity (0.54 MPa) two times higher than the one of E. mathaei, H. trigonarius and S. variolaris (0.21–0.25 MPa). Individual sea urchins of the four species, however, attached with a similar strength (0.2–0.26 MPa). The calculation of safety factors showed that it is the very high number of adoral tube feet of C. atratus and not the overall shape of the animal that allows this species to withstand very high water velocities. However, C. atratus streamlined morphology may be a functional adaptation to reduce the impact of other hydrodynamic forces (such as wave impingement forces) or to cope with other selective environmental stresses (such as dessication), and thus to inhabit extremely exposed areas of the intertidal.  相似文献

Narcomedusae are the most common group of medusae in the mesopelagic depths of Monterey Bay, California. Numerous capture events of various prey taxa were recorded in situ and analyzed using the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's remotely operated vehicle "Ventana". In situ video analysis of the stomach contents of 82 Solmissus incisa and S. marshalli revealed 88 identifiable prey items. Most (88%) were gelatinous animals. Of these gelatinous prey, 60.3% were ctenophores, 20.5% were cnidarians, 12.8% were salps, 3.8% were chaetognaths, and 2.6% were polychaetes. Euphausiids accounted for 11.4% of the diet, but they were probably captured adventitiously, as the gut contents of ctenophore prey. The tentacle-first foraging behavior of the narcomedusae is an effective way to capture large, comparatively fast-moving prey, because the fluid disturbance caused by swimming is decoupled from the area of prey capture. This behavior contrasts with the prevailing models of feeding behavior in medusae. Stealth predation may be the dominant mode of capturing prey by medusae in the mesopelagic depths of the oceans.  相似文献

Lipid compositions, water contents, swimbladder morphologies and specific gravities were studied for 19 species of oceanic midwater fishes, chiefly myctophids (lanternfishes) collected offshore from Oregon and California from 1975–1979. Three groups of species were recognizable. The first group had bodies low in both lipid and water content; they were denser than seawater, regardless of swimbladder morphology, which varied from absent through non-inflated to inflated. The second group had bodies low in lipid but high in water content; they were neutrally buoyant, evidently because of their high content of water, although their swimbladders were never inflated. The majority of the members of the aforementioned groups contained higher proportions of triglycerides than wax esters. The third group had bodies with high lipid but low water content; those with high triglyceride content had swimbladders ranging from non-inflated to (less commonly) inflated, were denser than seawater, and the lipid percentage of their body weights varied both with size and season, indicating that triglycerides function mainly as an energy store. The adults of species in the third group with a higher content of wax esters than triglycerides lacked inflated swimbladders, were neutrally buoyant, and the lipid percentage of their body weights was relatively constant with size and season, indicating that wax esters permit these fishes to attain neutral buoyancy in seawater.  相似文献

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope signatures have been determined for littoral fishes from three localities in the Balearic Islands (NW Mediterranean) for trophic assessment. Variation in the isotopic composition was examined at multiple levels: the individual organism, individual populations (ontogenetic variation) and at area effects (different islands). Cluster analyses based on 13C and 15N resulted in two very different dendrograms for the fish assemblages from Menorca and Formentera. In both schemes, congeners of the genera Diplodus and Labrus did not cluster together, suggesting that closely related species do not necessarily feed on similar foods. Significant differences in 15N were detected between locations for Scorpaena porcus, Scorpaena scrofa and Sciaena umbra, and significant differences in 13C were detected for Scorpaena porcus and Scorpaena scrofa. Overall there were significant spatial differences in the trophic position of littoral fishes among the three Balearic Islands, and fishes from Palma, Mallorca tended to feed at a higher trophic level than fishes from either Menorca and Formentera. Large-scale geographic comparisons, using earlier data from three sites in western Mallorca and in Corsica revealed that throughout the western Mediterranean generally, the average trophic level of fishes differs remarkably little. However, large discrepancies were observed in 15N for individual species, notably Scorpaena porcus, D. annularis, D. vulgaris and Serranus scriba. 13C composition of fishes did not seem to change greatly among the locations, although marked discrepancies were observed for D. puntazzo and Mullus surmuletus. Given the large-scale patterns we have observed, it is possible that the extent of multichannel omnivory which has been purported to exist in complex aquatic systems, may have been greatly overstated. Regression of 15N and 13C with fish body size revealed clear and significant trends for some species. In particular, 15N appeared to increase with body length in the macrocarnivorous fishes Scorpaena porcus, Scorpaena scrofa, Serranus scriba and Sciaena umbra. Trends were less apparent in animals which feed primarily on small benthic invertebrates, notably the four Diplodus species (D. vulgaris, D. sargus, D. annularis, D. puntazzo), and the labrids Labrus viridis and L. merula.Communicated by J.P. Measurements have been made of oxygen consumption rates O2 of 10 specimens of the mesopelagic deep-sea fangtooth fish Anoplogaster cornuta. Determinations were made at 1 atm pressure, at temperatures of 3°, 7°, and 10°C, at dissolved oxygen concentrations ranging from near saturation to zero, with the fish swimming at low, controlled speeds. Weight-specific O2 were uniformly low. They showed Q10's of 2.5 and 1.3, respectively, in the temperature ranges 3° to 7°C, and 7° to 10°C, at dissolved oxygen concentrations above 2 ml (standard temperature and presusure, STP)/1. Measurable O2 continued in these fish at dissolved oxygen concentrations down to the lowest levels detectable with our instruments. At 7°C the average critical oxygen tension (P c ) for the entire group was near 35 mm Hg. However, there is a statistically significant positive slope to the regression line relating O2 to P c for individual fish. The physiological and ecological significance of these results is discussed, particularly with reference to thermal effects and to the basis for survival by A. cornuta in the oxygen minimum layers of the eastern Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Measurements have been made of routine oxygen consumption rates ( ) of the mesopelagic deep-sea zoarcid fish Melanostigma pammelas. Determinations were made over ecologically relevant ranges of 3 variables; temperature (3° to 10°C), hydrostatic pressure (1 to 170 atm), and oxygen partial pressure (1 to 160 mm Hg). Weight-specific s were uniformly low. Of the 3 test variables, only temperature had significant metabolic effects within the ranges studied. Q10's were 6.75 between 3° and 5°C. 1.47 between 5° and 7°C, and 17.4 between 7° and 10°C. These Q10's were constant over the hydrostatic pressure range studied. Between 3° and 7°C the fish regulated their rates of oxygen consumption down to PO2's comparable to those occurring in their natural environments (6 to 12 mm Hg). The showed no capacity to tolerate anoxic conditions. The physiological and ecological significance of these results is discussed, particularly with reference to thermal effects and to the basis of survival of this fish in the oxygen minimum layers of the eastern Pacific Ocean. Since it is possible to maintain M. pammelas in the laboratory for extended periods of time (over 12 months) it could serve as the basis for many interesting studies of deep-sea fish biology.  相似文献

The activity of crude muscle lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) of several species of bathypelagic and shallow-water fishes has been measured at pressures between 1 and 578 atm and at temperatures of 15° and 25°C. No relationship has been found between the effect of pressure on enzyme activity and the hydrostatic pressure of the organism's environment. Applied hydrostatic pressure reduced activity at both temperatures. The decrease at 25°C was double the decrease at 15°C in LDH from shallow-water fishes. However, enzymes from 2 bathypelagic fishes showed approximately the same reduction at both temperatures. Thus, the interaction of temperature and pressure was less in deep-sea than in shallow-water fish LDH. Decreasing temperature and increasing pressure would both reduce the activity of LDH. That is, deep-sea conditions are noncompensatory in this instance. It is possible that the dissociation of the effects of temperature and pressure could be an adaptive feature of deep-sea life. This paper is a portion of a thesis submitted to the Graduate School, University of Georgia, in partial fulfillment for the degree of Master of Science.  相似文献

Mangrove estuaries in the Solomon Islands are well developed, but are small and isolated from each other by extensive fringing coral reef lagoons. A total of 136 species of fish were recorded from 13 estuaries (6 estuaries in Kolombangara, 3 in New Georgia, 3 in Rendova and 1 in the Florida Group); none contained more than 50 species. Sampling took place during five 3 wk expeditions from 1986 to 1988. The mean biomass of 11.60 g m–2 is comparable with that of similar estuaries in northern Australia. Cluster-analysis revealed two patterns of fish species composition. The first group, in which Gobiidae were the most numerous taxon, inhabited soft, muddy-bottom estuaries. The second group, dominated by Pomacentridae, lived in hard-bottom, log-strewn estuaries. The role of the estuaries as nursery grounds for coral reef species was assessed and found to be insignificant, but they are used as feeding grounds by mobile piscivorous species. The species composition of Solomon Island estuaries was compared with that of other Indo-Pacific estuaries. No endemic species were found and the fauna is typical of such mangrove systems throughout the region. However, several taxa that are common in Australia or New Guinea were not found, notably Ariidae, Centropomidae,Pomadasys, and Sciaenidae. These absentees, and the fish fauna as a whole, are discussed in relation to the position of the Solomon Islands at the western edge of the Pacific Plate, the effects of deep-ocean trenches, the recent geological origin of the islands, and possible methods of colonisation from nearby mangroves in Australia and New Guinea. The importance of larval durations and dispersal to colonisation are discussed in relation to oceanic circulation patterns in the Solomon Sea.  相似文献

Water motion is an important factor affecting planktivory on coral reefs. The feeding behavior of two species of tube-dwelling coral reef fish (Chaenopsidae) was studied in still and turbulent water. One species of blenny, Acanthemblemaria spinosa , lives in holes higher above the reef surface and feeds mainly on calanoid copepods, while a second, A. aspera , lives closer to the reef surface, feeds mainly on harpacticoid copepods, and is exposed to less water motion than the first. In the laboratory, these two blenny species were video recorded attacking a calanoid copepod ( Acartia tonsa, evasive prey) and an anostracan branchiopod (nauplii of Artemia sp., passive prey). Whereas A. spinosa attacked with the same vigor in still and turbulent water, A. aspera modulated its attack with a more deliberate strike under still conditions than turbulent conditions. For both fish species combined, mean capture success when feeding on Artemia sp. was 100% in still water and dropped to 78% in turbulent water. In contrast, when feeding on Acartia tonsa, mean capture success was 21% in still water and rose to 56% in turbulent water. We hypothesize that, although turbulence reduces capture success by adding erratic movement to Artemia sp. (passive prey), it increases capture success of Acartia tonsa (evasive prey) by interfering with the hydrodynamic sensing of the approaching predator. These opposite effects of water motion increase the complexity of the predator-prey relationship as water motion varies spatially and temporally on structurally complex coral reefs. Some observations were consistent with A. aspera living in a lower energy benthic boundary layer as compared with A. spinosa: slower initial approach to prey, attack speeds modulated according to water velocity, and lower proportion of approaches that result in strikes in turbulent water.Communicated by P.W. The accumulation of some heavy metals such as Pb, Cd, Cu and Ni was determined in water sediment and fish samples (Albumus escherichii, Cyprinus carpio and Silurus glanis) collected from Nallihan Bird Paradise (NBP) and its vicinity (Sariyar Dam). The results showed that these metals are found widespread throughout the study area, but metal concentrations in the water samples are below the detection limits (BDL). Pb, Cd, Cu and Ni contamination were determined in sediments and in fish tissues (muscle and liver) and it was seen that they were accumulated and biologically magnified in lish tissues. Metal concentration levels in sediment samples were higher than that of water and fish tissues. The highest amount of metal concentrations in sediment samples among seven stations were determined in Usakbuku (Pb: 0.49 ppm), Sakarya River (Cu: 1.12 ppm) and Sariyar (Ni: 0.77 ppm). Unlikely to the other stations, no metal residues were determined in the sediment samples ofAladag Creek Station.  相似文献

Two spectrophotometric assays for protein commonly used in marine research (Coomassie stain, Bradford; alkaline copper, Lowry) and a more recent assay which has not been applied in this field (bicinchoninic acid, Smith) were compared for homogenates of the marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonona using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a standard. When homogenates were prepared by precipitating protein with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and redissolving in 1 N NaOH, the protein content estimated by the Lowry and Smith assays agreed closely, but was consistently 20% higher than that indicated by the Bradford assay. To determine if this difference was due to the choice of a protein standard, protein from T. pseudonana was purified and compared to BSA, bovine gamma-globulin (BGG), and casein. The reactivity of the purified protein (expressed as the slope of the absorbance vs protein concentration curve) did not differ between cultures grown at high or low irradiance. For the Smith and Bradford assays the reactivity of BSA was not significantly different from algal protein, but for the Lowry assay, algal protein was significantly higher in reactivity than BSA. BGG was not significantly different in reactivity from algal protein for the Lowry and Smith assays, but BGG gave significantly lower absorbances than algal protein in the Bradford assay. These results suggest that BSA is a suitable standard for algal protein in the Bradford assays, while BGG is preferable for the Lowry assay. Either protein standard could be used for the Smith assay. Differences in purified algal protein reactivity compared to BSA could not account for the differences among the assays, nor could interference by chlorophyll a. Precipitating protein with TCA prior to analyses gave lower protein than direct analyses of homogenates for the Lowry and Smith assays, but no differences were found for the Bradford assay. As a result, the Lowry and Smith assays indicated up to 60% greater protein than the Bradford if TCA precipitation was not performed. This may be due to removal of free amino acids and small peptides which are less reactive in the Bradford assay. The 20% higher protein found in the Lowry or Smith vs Bradford assays may be due to different assay sensitivity to small peptides or other compounds which are precipitated along with proteins by TCA. Although the Smith assay is substantially simpler to perform than the Lowry, there appear to be no quantitative differences in the results. It remains unclear which spectrophotometric assay is most accurate, but the Bradford assay is faster and simpler, and is less likely to be affected by non-protein compounds found in marine phytoplankton.  相似文献

Most frequently encountered freshwater cyanobacterial toxin is Microcystin-LR (MC-LR). Microcystins released from cells into water have been responsible for the death of humans, domestic and wild animals. Removal of microcystin by active carbon has been one of the best methods available so far. This study evaluates three grades of active carbon namely 40, 60 and 80 CTC for their removal efficiency of MC-LR from contaminated water. Kinetics of toxin removal was studied in time course experiments. Protection in mouse model was studied for the samples after the adsorption. Toxin quantitation was done by HPLC method. The MC-LR concentration after 24 hr treatment with 40, 60 and 80 CTC carbons were 4.8, 3.3 and 1.3 microg/ml respectively from an initial concentration of 5.2 microg/ml. Protection in mouse bioassay was seen after 48, 24 and 2 hr of adsorption time respectively for 40, 60 and 80 CTC carbons. 80 CTC carbon was found to be most efficient in removing MC-LR from contaminated water.  相似文献
