A future business-as-usual scenario (A1FI) was tested on two bloom-forming cyanobacteria of the Baltic Proper, Nodularia spumigena and Aphanizomenon sp., growing separately and together. The projected scenario was tested in two laboratory experiments where (a) interactive effects of increased temperature and decreased salinity and (b) interactive effects of increased temperature and elevated levels of pCO2 were tested. Increased temperature, from 12 to 16 °C, had a positive effect on the biovolume and photosynthetic activity (F v/F m) of both species. Compared when growing separately, the biovolume of each species was lower when grown together. Decreased salinity, from 7 to 4, and elevated levels of pCO2, from 380 to 960 ppm, had no effect on the biovolume, but on F v/F m of N. spumigena with higher F v/F m in salinity 7. Our results suggest that the projected A1FI scenario might be beneficial for the two species dominating the extensive summer blooms in the Baltic Proper. However, our results further stress the importance of studying interactions between species.  相似文献

Summary This study tests the general prediction that discrimination among potential mates increases with the availability of potential mates. Specifically, we conducted two experiments that examined mate choice by male zaprochiline katydids in relation to their prior encounter rate with females. The probability of mate acceptance or rejection was measured for males given either frequent or no contact with females in the laboratory (experiment 1) and males taken directly from natural areas of either high or low female abundance (experiment 2). In both experiments, males with low female encounter rates were more likely to mate than males with high female encounter rates. In both cases, the decreased mating probability of males in the high encounter treatment resulted from their tendency to reject lighter (and less fecund) females. Despite the presumed advantage to males of selecting heavier females, field data indicate that, unlike females, males do not aggregate in rich food patches. Summary. In the moth Utetheisa ornatrix the female is promiscuous and receives a nuptial gift of pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) by seminal infusion from each mate. The alkaloidal gifts are transmitted by the female to the eggs, which are protected as a result. We here show that individual eggs may receive PAs from more than one male source and that individual males have no assurance that the PA they themselves contribute to the female will find its way exclusively to eggs of their siring. The Cape fur seal, Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus is distributed along the southern African coastline from northern Namibia to the south-east coast of South Africa. The species has been impacted by sealing operations since the 1600s, and historical records suggest that the taxon experienced a bottleneck prior to the 20th century. Mitochondrial DNA control region sequences were generated for 106 individuals belonging to six breeding colonies. Haplotype diversity was found to be high (0.975±0.014) whereas levels of nucleotide diversity were much lower compared to other seal species (0.011±0.006). An analysis of molecular variance indicated that the largest percentage of haplotype diversity is distributed within colonies rather than among them. This could be attributed to either extensive gene flow among colonies, a lack of substantial female site philopatry, or incomplete lineage sorting of haplotypes. Mismatch distribution and Fu’s F S test indicated that the population has experienced a historical population expansion probably between c. 37,000–18,000 YBP and this date coincides very well with the height of the last glacial maximum when food resources were abundant in the South Atlantic. These results also suggest that the recent sealing-induced bottleneck did not have a profound influence on the haplotype diversity and a historical bottleneck prior to a demographic expansion may have been severe enough to reduce nucleotide diversity substantially.  相似文献
