The erosion, transport and subsequent deposition of particles by wind has been identified as an important environmental problem worldwide. Investigations assessing fugitive dust emissions represent a relevant subject for various applications such as prevention of desert expansion, farmland erosion, quantification of dust emissions due to wind erosion from mining zones or open storage yards of granular materials. The present study, within this latter framework, aims to improve the methods of quantification of fugitive emissions from granular materials stockpiles on industrial sites. The methodology mostly used by the industrial operators to quantify dust emissions from their plants is based on the wind flow analysis and application of emission factors into such pattern. In this paper, three-dimensional numerical simulations were done to simulate wind flow over a real configuration of a power plant to highlight the influence of the surroundings buildings on the real exposure of the granular materials stockpiles. This study emphasizes the necessity to take into consideration the presence of surrounding buildings for the calculation of the particle emissions rate on stockpiles in order to obtain a more accurate and relevant evaluation of fugitive dust emissions from open storage systems on industrial sites.  相似文献

There are many industrial sites where open aggregate conical piles exist to store granular materials, like coal, industrial residuals, or other minerals. Usually these storage piles are placed in open areas, making them susceptible to wind erosion, which can create health, environmental, and/or economical concerns. It is common to minimize the dust emission through the placement of windbreaks in the vicinity of the storage piles, which reduces the wind speed in the vicinity of the pile’s surface. In this work, some experimental results from a wind tunnel study on the erosion of a conical sand pile, exposed or protected by a fence with porosities of 0, 70, and 83%, are shown. For the sheltered cases, the windbreak was placed at several distances from the pile’s leading edge, ranging from H to 4H, where H is the initial height of the non-eroded pile. The evolution of the shape of the sand pile is shown, at different instances in time, and the pile deformation quantified, using a novel experimental setup developed for wind erosion studies. This information might be regarded as a useful dataset for the benchmark of computational models aiming to produce the transient simulation of the aeolian erosion of stockpiles. The CFD results are comprised of the modeling of several experimental scenarios. The computational results for the surface wind velocity show a good correlation with the initial deformation of the pile. Based on the results, the isocontours of (u s /u r ) presented might be regarded as a good basis for the estimation of the pile shear velocity.  相似文献

The micro-scale prediction of sand trapping or take-off over hilly terrains is a crucial issue in semi-arid regions for soil depletion. In this context, large eddy simulations around one or several hills are performed in order to provide statistical parameters to characterize the flow at micro-scales and provide data for mesoscale modelling. We focus on the determination of recirculation zones since they play an important role in solid particle erosion or entrapment. A new wall modeling adapted from Huang et al. (J Turbul 17:1–24, 2016) for rough boundary layers is found to improve the prediction of the recirculation zone length downstream of an isolated hill and is used for all the numerical cases presented here. A geometrical parameterization of the recirculation zones is proposed. When the recirculation region is assumed to have an ellipsoidal shape, the total surface of the recirculation can be obtained from this new parameterization and easily extrapolated to more general dune configurations. Numerical results are compared with experiments performed in our laboratory (Simoëns et al. in Procedia IUTAM 17:110–118, 2015) and good agreement is achieved. We explore general aerodynamic cases deduced from the urban canopy scheme of Oke (Energy Build 11:103–113, 1988). In this scheme the momentum and mass exchange between the upper layer and the space between hills is sorted according to the streamwise hill spacing within three basic cases of skimming, wake or isolated flow. The study of the recirculation zones, the mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles around an isolated or two consecutive hills with different distances shows that the double hill configuration with 3H separation behaves as much as a whole to the upcoming flow. The vortex formed between the crests does not strongly affect the overall evolution of the outer flow. By an a priori prediction of the preferential zones of erosion and accumulation of fictive particles, it is shown that isolated dunes present more deposition and less erosion than two-hill configurations. The results presented in this study will be discussed in the presence of Lagrangian transport of sand particles above 2D Gaussian hills in future work.  相似文献

A microcosm experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of the simulated deposition of uncontaminated dredged material on nematode assemblages from estuarine intertidal mud. The main objective was to assess the ability of nematodes to migrate vertically into native muddy and non-native sandy sediment deposited in different amounts and frequencies. Results from univariate and graphical methods of data-evaluation revealed that nematodes were capable of migrating over a wide depth range from the bottom mud layer into the top layer of deposited sand and mud. A diverse mud assemblage of nematodes was able to survive in non-native fine sand for the experimental period of 2 mo. Multivariate analyses showed that the amount of deposit and the frequency of deposition were interactive factors. A high amount of sediment deposited once at the beginning of the experiment caused more severe changes in assemblage structure than the same amount deposited in more frequent but smaller doses. The response of most species to the experimental treatments appeared to be an integrated response to the enhancing effect of food input accompanying the deposit and the negative effect of burial. Upward migration of nematodes is a process which has often been underestimated in its importance for recolonisation of areas where uncontaminated dredged material is deposited. Active migration of nematodes can significantly affect the recovery of a dredgings disposal site. Received: 29 July 1999 / Accepted: 17 January 2000  相似文献

In an inner dune area in the Dutch coastal dunes several artificially stabilized blowouts were reactivated. The purpose was to investigate whether these reactivated blowouts could remain active despite the increased atmospheric deposition of nutrients, how much area would be affected by sand from the blowouts, whether the vegetation would respond to the deposition of sand, and whether the reactivation of blowouts could be a measure against the effects of acidification and eutrophication. This paper presents the results of the first years of minitoring the changes in the blowout morphology and the response of the vegetation. In the monitoring period (1991–1994) the blowouts remained active and grew slowly in size and depth. The area which receives more than 1 cm of calcareous sand from the blowout in three years was up to six times the area of the blowouts. Moss vegetation responded to the accumulation of sand:Campylopus introflexus was sparse within the deposition area whereasTortula ruralis was found near the contour of 1 cm deposition in 3 yr. No indications were found that shrubs or marram grass were adversely affected by the deposition of sand. The experiment forms part of a programme to test measures aimed at mitigating the effects of air pollution on natural landscapes. From the viewpoint of the programme the experiment is a success.  相似文献

The past few decades have seen a progressive reduction in the extent of mobile dune systems and early successional stage habitats in many parts of NW Europe. The evidence suggests that a number of factors have contributed to this process, but their relative importance remains uncertain. This paper examines the nature and possible causes of geomorphological and vegetation changes at Kenfig Burrows, South Wales, a site of European nature conservation importance. This dune system is interpreted to have evolved from a sand barrier system which formerly existed to seaward of the present shoreline and which moved landwards and broke down during the later Holocene, driven by rising sea level and periods of more frequent storms. Most of the inland sand invasion occurred during the Little Ice Age, and large-scale sand-blowing continued until the early twentieth century, by which time the shoreline in the area had reached a state of quasi-equilibrium and a trend towards stabilization began, encouraged by exhaustion of marine sand supply and a change towards warmer, wetter and less windy conditions. Stabilization after the 1940–50s was also favoured by other factors, including reduced grazing by livestock and rabbits, reduced physical disturbance, increased nitrogen deposition, and sand dune management measures. By the 1980s the dunes were almost entirely stabilized. Natural reactivation of the surface sand is unlikely given the existing balance between the factors which favour dune mobility (frequent occurrence of sand-moving winds and high sand supply), and those which encourage vegetation growth and dune stability (high precipitation, high temperatures, low wind speeds, high rates of nitrogen deposition and low grazing / disturbance pressure). Since 2012 trials have been underway to determine if it is possible to increase the mobility of the dune system through intervention measures, including turf stripping and creation of artificial ‘notches’ to increase local wind speeds and sand-transport, but it will be several years before the effectiveness of these measures is known.  相似文献

The largest beach replenishment project ever in France was completed in February 2014 in Dunkirk on the coast of northern France. A volume of 1.5 × 106 m3 of sand extracted from a navigation channel was placed on the beach to build up a 150 to 300 m wide supratidal platform in front of a dike, called « Digue des Alliés », which protects several residential districts of Dunkirk from marine flooding. High resolution topographic surveys were carried out during 2½ years to monitor beach morphological changes, completed by a hydrodynamic field experiment conducted in February 2016. Approximately ?138,200 m3 of sand, corresponding to 9.2% of the initial nourishment volume, were eroded over the nourishment area in about 2 years. An obvious decrease in erosion eastward with a shift from erosion to accumulation was observed, suggesting an eastward redistribution of sand. This longshore sand drift is beneficial for the eastward beach of Malo-les-Bains where most of the recreational activities are concentrated. Hydrodynamic measurements showed that waves and wave-induced currents play a major role on the longshore sand redistribution compared to tidal flows. Strong relationships were observed between cumulative offshore wave power and beach volume change during distinct beach survey periods (R2 = 0.79 to 0.87), with more significant correlations for northerly waves. A slight decrease in erosion during the second year compared to the first year after nourishment suggests that the loss of sand should decrease after an initial phase of rapid readjustment of the beach shape towards equilibrium.  相似文献

This study reports on the quantification of horizontal erosion by undermining of slopes in the atlantic mesotidal salt marshes of Odiel, SW Spain, and analyses its causes and consequences. Horizontal erosion has produced considerable losses of salt marsh area, including zones of mature salt marsh. Human pressure, such as from water-borne traffic or the exploitation of the slopes for the capture of bait, increases the natural erosion processes. The role of vegetation in protecting the slopes against erosion is studied. Channel banks covered with plants, many of which belong to species with long-living, above-ground creeping stems, were less eroded than those without vegetation cover. The enormous volume of sediments moved (ca. 7000m3 in one year) could contribute to the silting-up of the navigable channels of the estuary, so that continual dredging is necessary to allow access to shipping. These sediments are highly contaminated, and dredging exposes them more directly to the trophic network of the estuary. There is a considerable loss of natural resources. Finally, the integrated management of this coastal ecosystem is discussed.  相似文献

Dredged material resulting from deepening and maintenance activities of the Aveiro Harbor inlet channel, northwestern coast of Portugal, has been used to mitigate the erosion trend recorded on nearby beaches (from Barra to Costa Nova Beach) through direct placement of sand by using standard dredge equipment. The disposal activities of dredged material have been undertaken at two main sites: between the south breakwater and the 1st groin of Costa Nova (dumping area 1, DA1) and between the 3rd and the 5th groin of Costa Nova (dumping area 2, DA2).The sand was placed in the nearshore, between the ?2 and ?7 m Chart Datum, CD, contours. In this study, short- and long-term coastal morphologic changes in the sea bottom, in response to several nourishment operations and to the incoming waves, within the dumping area boundaries are investigated based on a data set of hydrographic surveys collected annually, just before and after the nourishments, between 2009 and 2015. Preliminary results describing the main morphologic changes, evolution trends, sediment budget variations, and nourishments performance are discussed using mainly Geographic Information System techniques. Overall, the analysis demonstrates that the short-term losses in the dumping areas (one month of interval) can reach 50% of the nourished volume, revealing a significant movement of the fill material towards offshore. Seasonal variations promoting cross-shore material exchange can also prevail and misrepresent the sediment balances, if the monitoring area is not comprehensive. Furthermore, some bathymetric analysis suggested that longshore transport gradients have moved the fill material from Barra beach to downdrift areas. All the obtained results contribute to the ongoing discussion about the effectiveness of nearshore sand placements especially in context of an energetic environment.  相似文献

The force of wind on the ground created by turbulent eddies is commonly used to describe the horizontal flux of material during wind erosion. Here we present the Murdoch Turbulence Probe, an instrument for use in both clean and eroding flows which uses pressure differences to measure the three components of wind velocity. Correlation techniques calculate the forces near the ground and turbulence statistics in nearly real time, including turbulent velocity fluctuations from less than 0.1 Hz to 200 Hz, mean flow velocities, Reynolds stresses as well as the integral length and time scales. In the portable wind-tunnel used by Agriculture Western Australia, turbulence statistics were recorded over stable surfaces and in blowing sand from the initiation of erosion up to the time the sand supply was exhausted. Estimates of the friction velocity derived from the turbulence probe were compared with estimates obtained from the wind speed profile measured with a rake of pitot and static tubes. The Murdoch Turbulence Probe appears to work well in sandblasting conditions. Relative turbulence intensities ranged from 0.11 to 0.2 and are in close agreement with values in the literature. The ratio of the turbulence to the friction velocity (3 to 3.2) is at the high end of the reported range. The Reynolds stress measurements agree closely with predictions of the threshold friction velocities of the sand and estimates from the wind speed profile with a von Kármán constant of about 0.3, lower than the commonly accepted value of 0.4. We suggest that the wind-tunnel profile represents the `outer layer' of the boundary-layer that may best be described by a `Wake Law' or `Defect Law'. At about 54 mm above the surface, the friction velocity decreases from 0.64 m/s to 0.39 m/s and the mean velocity increases from 9.6 m/s to 11.6 m/s as the supply of sand is depleted. In addition to the friction velocity, other scales may be necessary to characterise the overriding effect of the wind and in extending wind-tunnel results to the field.  相似文献

Autotrophic denitrification was investigated in five bench‐scale upflow attached growth reactors using hydrogen oxidizing bacteria under anoxic conditions. The performance of sand, granular activated carbon (GAC), crushed pumice, crushed volcanic rock, and plastic media were evaluated as the support material. The reactors were inoculated with acclimated cultures obtained from domestic sewage treatment plant. A synthetic solution containing nitrate was used as the influent. The reactor performance was evaluated by measuring influent and effluent nitrate concentration. The design parameters demonstrated that the effectiveness of autotrophic denitrification is comparable to that of the heterotrophic process and may be utilized economically for drinking water treatment either as the main process or as a supplemental process for ion exchange regenerant treatment.  相似文献

The trend of rising ozone concentrations in forest ecosystems and the phytotoxicity of ozone demand a realistic risk assessment according to an internationally accepted and flux-based quality standard. Ozone fluxes within the canopy are influenced by chemical gas-phase reactions with nitrogen oxide and biogenic hydrocarbons and by surface deposition processes. Therefore, a differentiation of the ozone flux within the canopy is needed between stomatal uptake and other transport pathways. The Eddy Covariance technique is the method of choice for the determination of trace gas fluxes relevant for ozone chemistry. This method is also used for stomatal conductance measurements based on evapotranspiration fluxes and for emission measurements of biogenic hydrocarbons by PTR-MS. Although considerably research efforts were directed to canopy measurements in recent years, the underlying processes are not fully understood yet. Thus, major differences occur in the ratios of stomatal ozone uptake, non-stomatal deposition and gas-phase chemistry between different studies. Furthermore, the vertical concentration gradients within the canopy measured at several forest sites are rather inconsistent and the existing deposition models do rarely account for chemical transformation and detoxification processes. Only a simultaneous measurement of all photochemically relevant trace gases, plant physiological parameters at different sites and forest species over entire vegetation periods, and model parameterization according to the measurement results from the experimental sites will contribute to the clarification of the canopy processes and will ensure realistic risk assessments.  相似文献

Throughfall may contribute large amounts of nutrients to forest soils via the leaching of accumulated dry particulates on the canopy, and by altering incoming precipitation, it may have some control on the acid–base status of the soil. Unfortunately, information about throughfall in forests is sparse and thus, scientists must deal with this gap in knowledge before conducting regional applications of dynamic soil acidification models. The first objective of this paper was to test the possibility of developing regression equations that could allow modellers to estimate throughfall nutrient fluxes using wet deposition nutrient fluxes as input data. The second objective was to test the relative importance of this simplification on regional applications of the dynamic soil–atmosphere model Soil Acidification in Forested Ecosystems (SAFE) using one published application of this model as the base case. Annual throughfall nutrient fluxes were estimated successfully from annual wet deposition fluxes for individual ions. The success of these relationships were however inversely proportional to the intensity at which an ion was involved in exchange reactions: models generally performed better with more conservative ions. The simulation of the soil acid–base status with SAFE suggested that it was appropriate to use the throughfall estimates yielded using the regression equations. Also, testing of the SAFE output using different regression equations in throughfall showed that, in the case of base cations, the key for modelling the soil acid–base status was to produce accurate throughfall estimates of Ca and Mg, and that K had marginal effects. However, a small bias in solution pH was introduced as the balance between alkalinity and acidity in the different categories of deposition appeared to be diverging from the base case (measured) values. The use of our approach at other sites may indicate if there is a systematic bias or not in the regressions. Yet, results suggest that the regression equations are appropriate for the purpose of modelling the soil acid–base status at the scale of the landscape because it assures that the same set of assumptions in throughfall are used for each application.  相似文献

The Sands of Forvie, National Nature Reserve, Scotland is a complex coastal sand dune system which is associated with the dynamic estuary of the River Ythan. The dune system has developed over more than 5000 years. The south part is a peninsula of dunes, sand hills, sand arcs, erosion and deflation surfaces. The north part is superimposed on a rock plateau with a cliff coastline. This plateau is covered in glacial deposits and is essentially an upland heath landscape. Some of the best examples of large active parabolic dunes in Britain are found in North Forvie. The sequence of geomorphic development is described. As a nature reserve with a rich ecology it has been managed for conservational purposes since 1960s. As such it is an excellent case study of how conservational management has changed to become more flexible and more aware of the importance of dynamic processes.  相似文献

Numerical and experimental analysis of wind erosion on a sinusoidal pile   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Erosion is a common phenomenon in nature, and it may cause a wide range of problems such as air pollution, and destruction of agricultural land, shelters and stockpiles. The present work deals with stockpiles, which have their profiles described by a sinus function or by similar trigonometric functions. Analysis of the erosion by air flow over these piles will provide for further understanding of the erosion underlying mechanisms and, moreover, how to control them and eventually to prevent them. To this purpose, different experimental tests are conducted for a pile with a sinuous profile, and particular attention is given to the time development of the profile due to the erosion process; the effect of the air velocity is also studied by selecting different velocities. In addition, the flow over several deformed piles is numerically predicted using the CFX software; the results clearly show the erosion process is strongly dependent upon time, velocity field and surface disturbances. A correlation between the erosion rate and the velocity is proposed.  相似文献

In the last three years, twelve orphan coal surface mines in Iowa, USA, have been reclaimed under the Federal Rural Abandoned Mine Program (RAMP) by smoothing highly acid spoils, covering the spoils with a thin dirt layer and planting a cover crop. Ten years ago a test plot was designed with a wedge of loess over acid spoils. Subsequent observation suggests that on the new RAMP sites, acidified throughflow and discharge of shallow soil moisture and groundwater will gradually kill the vegetation in the lower valleys and erosion will proceed upvalley as a migrating knickpoint. The problem might be eliminated by directing the acidified throughflow beneath the cover material, in sand underdrains or tile lines in the main drainages. The discharge could either be diluted in a nearby creek, if adequate flow is available, or neutralised in a basin paved with limestone rip-rap. Vegetation which was found to be especially well adapted to thin cover sites includes native prairie grasses, crownvetch and cattails. Sphagnum mosses may also offer some possibilities for such locations. A RAMP reclamation site should be designed as an experimental area to test these methods and determine their cost. These recommendations may also be applicable in other mining areas.  相似文献

Resuspension and growth ofOstrea edulis: A field experiment   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Field experiments withOstrea edulis L. were conducted to examine the effects of resuspension on subtidal oyster growth in a small cove in malifax County, Nova Scotia. Removable racks with strips of fixed juvenile oysters were placed at 4 and 30 cm above a coarse sandy bottom (2 m depth). Summer growth was assessed weekly for 7 wk (July to August 1985) using silhouette images to follow individual change in shell area, a correlate of change in wet weight. Daily measurements of temperature, erosion/deposition (buried plate depth) and sediment chlorophyll suggested that sediment transport partially controlled the standing stock of benthic microalgae. Relative oyster growth per week was positively correlated with temperature. In addition, relative growth initially increased as the transport regime went from erosional to depositional (maximum growth near zero net transport) but growth rate declined with continued deposition. The relationship of oyster growth to gross changes in sediment chlorophyll showed a similar parabolic trend. The shape of these curves is similar to those obtained in published laboratory feeding experiments, which suggest beneficial effects of resuspension as a bivalve food supplement, but inhibition at higher levels due to decreased ingestion or dilution of food with inorganics. It is postulated that sand bottoms may provide more suitable resuspension environments than mud due to lower suspended loads over coarse sediments. Resuspension may be a valuable supplement to water column production as food for cultured bivalves, a factor of value in grow-out site selection.  相似文献
