Spraying water under high pressure generates charge-separating processes. While cleaning tanks and vessels in which an explosive atmosphere is present, an explosion may occur in the event of a resulting discharge. Water forms electrical double layers at the phase boundaries. Mechanical separation processes dissolve the water into many drops. This leads to charge separation and the charging of the sprayed water. The mechanical separation processes include water exiting from the nozzle, hydrodynamic instability in the jet and impact with an obstacle. Given that water has many charge carriers, the charge is stronger than with solvents. Whether the charges and the resulting discharges are potentially capable of igniting an explosive atmosphere must be investigated. The aim of this research is to define the quantity and polarity of the electrostatic charges of sprayed water under high pressure. Different measurement techniques and methods are used to enable mutual validation and to generate verified measurement results of the electric field and the potential. Water of different electrical conductivity is sprayed in free space and into a grounded conductive 1 m3 vessel. Design changes to the vessel allow centric or oblique spraying. The result is intended to extend the scope of application of the German regulation TRGS 727 and the international IEC TS 60079-32-1, which refer to ignition hazards due to electrostatic charging. Explosion isolation systems provide critical protection for interconnected vessels and work areas, preventing the spread of explosions through interconnecting pipes and ducts. These systems not only prevent propagating events, but also mitigate the elevated explosion hazards of interconnected vessels, related to pressure piling and enhanced turbulence. Explosion isolation systems can, however, fail catastrophically when they are not properly designed for a use case.Evaluating the performance of explosion isolation systems includes assessing their pressure resistance, flame-barrier efficacy, and determining appropriate installation distances, which typically requires extensive testing. To predict the performance of a system for use cases outside the tested conditions, models are needed to reliably predict both the explosion dynamics and the isolation system response.In this study, a physics-based model for explosion dynamics in vented vessel-pipe systems is developed and validated. An extensive series of large-scale validation experiments were conducted, including tests using an 8 m3 vessel with attached pipes, varying the pipe dimensions, ignition location, and mixture reactivity. The model accurately captures the effects of experimental parameters and predicts the time available for isolation systems to form a flame barrier. This model can help to predict installation distances and reduce the number of tests needed to comprehensively evaluate explosion isolation systems and their use cases.  相似文献

According to standard procedures, flammability and explosion parameters for dusts and dust mixtures are evaluated in 20 L and/or 1 m3 vessels, with equivalent results provided a correct ignition delay time (60 ms in the 20 L vessel; 600 ms in the 1 m3 vessel). In this work, CFD simulations of flow field and dust concentration distribution in the 1 m3 spherical vessel are performed, and the results compared to the data previously obtained for the 20 L. It has been found that in the 1 m3 vessel, the spatial distribution of the turbulent kinetic energy is lower and much more uniform. Concerning the dust distribution, as in the case of the 20 L, dust is mainly concentrated at the outer zones of the vortices generated inside the vessel. Furthermore, an incomplete feeding is attained, with most of the dust trapped in the perforated annular nozzle. Starting from the maps of dust concentration and turbulent kinetic energy, the deflagration index KSt is calculated in both vessels. In the conditions of the present work, the KSt is found to be 2.4 times higher in the 20 L than in the 1 m3 vessel.  相似文献

Pressure piling presents a major explosion hazard in interconnected process vessels. Pressure enhancement in the secondary vessel due to the acceleration of the flame through the connecting pipe can generate a disproportionately more violent explosion than would have been expected based on the concentration of dust in the secondary vessel. Pressure piling is a very complex phenomenon that is difficult to investigate through experimentation. Advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling is a promising route to accurately account for all the complexities associated with pressure piling.In this paper, the current state of knowledge concerning pressure piling is presented. Further, the effects of varying the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) of the primary vessel (Vessel 1) on pressure piling was investigated using numerical modelling. The volumes and volume ratio of the interconnected vessels were kept constant while the L/D of Vessel 1 was varied from 0.5 to 15. The simulations of coal dust explosion were performed using the coalChemistryFoam solver from OpenFOAM version 5.0.1. It is hoped that the findings from this study provide insight into the effects of the geometrical design of interconnected vessels, particularly L/D, on pressure piling. Additionally, this work has implications for the optimal placement of explosion isolation devices intended to actuate before the flame front and pressure escape to downstream vessels.  相似文献

Using micron-sized Al2O3 particles as carriers to grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under 700°C atmosphere of methane and hydrogen after pre-planted catalysts of Fe–Ni nanoparticles, those composite CNTs (CCNTs) have demonstrated several unique properties compared to CNTs—medium specific surface area and zeta potential, high adsorption capacity for metal ions, high recovery rate by acids, low decomposition heat for exothermal reaction, and so on. The adsorption behaviours of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ in aqueous solutions by CCNTs are in good agreement with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and second order kinetic model with maximum individual adsorption capacities of 67.11, 26.59 and 8.89 mg g−1. The individual and competitive adsorption behaviours indicated that the preference order of adsorption were Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Cd2+ for aluminum oxides, activated carbon, commercial CNTs, and CCNTs as well as other researchers’ CNTs. We suggest that future development of CNTs to combine with metals and/or other materials, such as TiO2, should consider attached to carriers or surface in order to avoid concerns on environment, health and safety. Thus, growing CNTs on Al2O3 particles to form CCNTs is an inherently safe approach for many promising environmental applications.  相似文献

The primary aim of the study was to analyse the non-steady state of filtration for selected electrostatic filter materials designed for use in respiratory protective devices. The obtained results showed that the filtration process in electrostatic filters was dependent in the main on the following factors: type of the filter material, electrostatic field strength of the material, and the charge of the aerosol.

To a lesser degree the filtration process depended on the sign of the charge and the relative humidity of the air. A significant correlation was found between the increase in the penetration and the decrease in breathing resistance while the filter was being loaded.

The effect of resuspension (tearing off and re-deposition of dust agglomerates inside the filter) on the filtration process very significant. It was also observed that under certain conditions electrostatic filter materials lost their protection properties.  相似文献

Experiments have been conducted to gain insight into the credibility of sparging aqueous solutions as an electrostatic ignition hazard for sensitive hydrogen/air or fuel/oxygen mixtures (Minimum Ignition Energies of ∼0.017 mJ and ∼0.002 mJ, respectively, compared to ∼0.25 mJ for hydrocarbon/air mixtures). Tests performed in a 0.5 m3 ullage produced electric field strengths between 125 and 560 V m−1 for air flows of 5–60 l min−1, respectively, comprised of 2–4 mm diameter bubbles. Field strength can be related to the space charge and fitting to an exponential accumulation curve enabled the charge generation rate from the air flows to be estimated. This was observed to be directly proportional to the air flow and its magnitude was consistent with literature data for bubble bursts. The charge accumulation observed at laboratory scale would not be a cause for concern. On the basis of a simple model, the charge accumulation in a 27 m3 ullage was predicted for a range of air flows. It is apparent from such calculations that ignition of hydrocarbon/air mixtures would not be expected. However, it would seem possible that field strengths might be sufficient to cause a risk of incendive spark or corona discharges in moderately sized vessels with sensitive flammable mixtures.  相似文献

An experimental program has been undertaken to investigate the explosibility of selected organic dusts. The work is part of a larger research project aimed at examination of a category of combustible dusts known as marginally explosible. These are materials that appear to explode in laboratory-scale test chambers, but which may not produce appreciable overpressures and rates of pressure rise in intermediate-scale chambers. Recent work by other researchers has also demonstrated that for some materials, the reverse occurs – i.e., values of explosion parameters are higher in a 1-m3 chamber than one with a volume of 20 L. Uncertainties can therefore arise in the design of dust explosion risk reduction measures.The following materials were tested in the current work: niacin, lycopodium and polyethylene, all of which are well-known to be combustible and which cover a relatively wide range of explosion consequence severity. The concept of marginal explosibility was incorporated by testing both fine and coarse fractions of polyethylene. Experiments were conducted at Dalhousie University using the following equipment: (i) Siwek 20-L explosion chamber for determination of maximum explosion pressure (Pmax), volume-normalized maximum rate of pressure rise (KSt), and minimum explosible concentration (MEC), (ii) MIKE 3 apparatus for determination of minimum ignition energy (MIE), and (iii) BAM oven for determination of minimum ignition temperature (MIT). Testing was also conducted at Fauske & Associates, LLC using a 1-m3 explosion chamber for determination of Pmax, KSt and MEC. All equipment were calibrated against reference dusts, and relevant ASTM methodologies were followed in all tests.The explosion data followed known trends in accordance with relevant physical and chemical phenomena. For example, Pmax and KSt values for the fine sample of polyethylene were higher than those for the coarse sample because of the decrease in particle size. MEC values for all samples were comparable in both the 20-L and 1-m3 chambers. Pmax and KSt values compared favorably in the different size vessels except for the coarse polyethylene sample. In this case, KSt determined in a volume of 1 m3 was significantly higher than the value from 20-L testing. The fact that the 20-L KSt was low (23 bar m/s) does not indicate marginal explosibility of the coarse polyethylene. This sample is clearly explosible as evidenced by the measured values of MEC, MIE, MIT, and 1-m3 KSt (at both 550 and 600 ms ignition delay times).  相似文献

Combustible dust explosions continue to present a significant threat toward operating personnel and pneumatic conveyance equipment in a wide variety of processing industries. Following ignition of suspended fuel within a primary enclosure volume, propagation of flame and pressure fronts toward upstream or downstream interconnected enclosures can result in devastating secondary explosions if not impeded through an appropriate isolation mechanism. In such occurrences, an accelerated flame front may result in flame jet ignition within the secondary vessel, greatly increasing the overall explosion severity. Unlike an isolated deflagration event with quantifiable reduced pressures (vent sizing according to NFPA 68 guidance), oscillation of pressure between primary and secondary process vessels leads to uncertain overpressure effects. Dependent on details of the application such as relative enclosure volumes, relief area, fuel type, suspended concentration, duct size, and duct length, the maximum system pressure in both interconnected vessels can be unpredictable. This study proposes the use of FLame ACceleration Simulator (FLACS) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to provide reliable consequence predictions for specific case scenarios of dust deflagrations involving interconnected equipment. Required minimum supplement to the originally calculated relief area (Av) was determined through iterative simulation, allowing for reduced explosion pressures (Pred) to be maintained below theoretical enclosure design strengths (Pes).  相似文献

The coupling effects of venting and CO2 inerting on stoichiometric methane-air mixture explosions were investigated in an isolated vessel and interconnected vessels. The results indicate that venting mitigates the explosion intensity, especially for small vessels. For vessels connected by pipes, a venting design following EN 14994 (2007) and NFPA 68 (2013) could not meet the venting requirements. For an isolated big vessel and interconnected vessels, increasing the CO2 volume fraction (Φ) from 0 to 15.0 vol% decreased the maximum explosion overpressure (Pmax) and maximum rate of overpressure rise ((dP/dt)max) and delayed tmax. For closed interconnected vessels, Pmax varied approximately linearly with Φ. For both isolated vessel and interconnected vessels, the coupling effects of venting and CO2 inerting on methane-air explosion were more efficient than those of individual mitigative method (that is, venting alone or CO2 inerting alone).  相似文献

This study investigates dust explosions in vessel-pipe systems to develop a better understanding of dust flame propagation between interconnected vessels and implications for the proper application of explosion isolation systems. Cornstarch dust explosions were conducted in a large-scale setup consisting of a vented 8-m3 vessel and an attached pipe with a diameter of 0.4 m and a length of 9.8 m. The ignition location and effective dust reactivity were varied between experiments. The experimental results are compared against previous experiments with initially quiescent propane-air mixtures, demonstrating a significantly higher reactivity of the dust explosions due to elevated initial turbulence, leading to higher peak pressures and faster flame propagation. In addition, a physics-based model developed previously to predict gas explosion dynamics in vessel-pipe systems was extended for dust combustion. The model successfully predicts the pressure transients and flame progress recorded in the experiments and captures the effects of ignition location and effective dust reactivity.  相似文献

A mathematical model that predicts hydroxylamine nitrate (HAN) (NH2OH·HNO3) stability is applied to aqueous solutions containing HAN, nitric acid and plutonium that are used in plutonium purification processes. The model estimates the stability of these solutions with respect to the rapid, hazardous, autocatalytic reaction of HAN with nitric acid that generates heat and gas. It also accounts for reaction kinetics, temperature changes, gas generation rates, solution volumes and flow rates, and distribution of plutonium and nitric acid between aqueous and organic phases. The model is applied to three typical process vessels used in solvent extraction purification of plutonium – a countercurrent aqueous/organic plutonium stripping column, an oxidation column used for HAN and hydrazine destruction, and a plutonium rework tank. Both normal and off-normal process scenarios are modeled. Two of the off-normal scenarios lead to the rapid autocatalytic reaction of HAN with nitric acid where heat and gas are generated and that could lead to damage of the process equipment and/or release of hazardous plutonium solution from the vessel. In these two cases, stationary aqueous solutions containing HAN, Pu(III), and nitric acid were allowed to slowly react until conditions for the autocatalytic reaction were reached.  相似文献

For the case where a dust or gas explosion can occur in a connected process vessel, it would be useful, for the purpose of designing protection measures and also for assessing the existing protection measures such as the correct placement, to have a tool to estimate the time for flame front propagation along the connecting pipe. Measurements of data from large-scale explosion tests in industrially relevant process vessels are reported. To determine the flame front propagation time, either a 1 m3 or a 4.25 m3 primary process vessel was connected via a pipe to a mechanically or pneumatically fed 9.4 m3 secondary silo. The explosion propagation started after ignition of a maize starch/air mixture in the primary vessel. No additional dust was present along the connecting pipe. Systematic investigations of the explosion data have shown a relationship between the flame front propagating time and the reduced explosion over-pressure of the primary explosion vessel for both vessel volumes. Furthermore, it was possible to validate this theory by using explosion data from previous investigations. Using the data, a flame front propagation time prediction model was developed which is applicable for:
  • •gas and dust explosions up to a K value of 100 and 200 bar m s−1, respectively, and a maximum reduced explosion over-pressure of up to 7 bar;
  • •explosion vessel volumes of 0.5, 1, 4.25 and 9.4 m3, independent of whether they are closed or vented;
  • •connecting pipes of pneumatic systems with diameters of 100–200 mm and an air velocity up to 30 m s−1;
  • •open ended pipes and pipes of interconnected vessels with a diameter equal to or greater than 100 mm;
  • •lengths of connecting pipe of at least 2.5–7 m.

Safety of people has been the most important concern since the onset of commercial use of Compressed Natural Gas1 as a novel type of vehicle fuel. Provided a car vessel bursts, irreversible consequences will surface. The most important hazard threatening people and their properties in CNG distribution stations is pressurized natural gas in station storage vessels and car vessels. Storage vessels are far from people; however, they may damage other properties such as pipes, valves, electrical equipment, and etc. Owing to the distance between storage vessels and the hive, the risk is not considered a big concern; on the contrary, car storage vessel is very close to the passengers sitting in the car and those standing around the car. The proximity heightens the risk as the consequences caused by vessel burst can be more catastrophic than the former condition. Taken together, the car CNG vessel burst may be regarded as the most hazardous event at CNG distribution centers. It is believed that modeling the mentioned events can illustrate risky conditions. The present study was formulated in order to model one of such accidents occurring in Azad-Shahr in the winter 2010. The obtained results provided useful points and recommendations like the minimum safe distance from rupture center depending on such outcomes as overpressure, types of fire, or toxic release. The recommendations provided by the present study can prevent people from calamitous events and they can be adopted so as to reduce severity of possible events.  相似文献

An autocontrol two-stage hybrid process was developed to treat landfill leachate. Biological nitrogen removal with nitrification and denitrification via nitrite pathway was split into two stages. The first stage was designed for the high nitrite accumulation and was composed of two hybrid bed reactors (Hybrid I and Hybrid II) and a coagulation–flocculation reactor having effective volumes of 120 L and 80 L, respectively. The second stage was designed for strengthening denitrification and included a single 80 L reactor. The carriers of the hybrid bed reactors were composed of fixed multiple flexible carriers and suspended particle carriers. Dissolved oxygen (DO), pH value, oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) and temperature were used as online fuzzy control parameters of the automatic control system. The concentration of nitrite in Hybrid I and Hybrid II could reach 411 mg L−1 and 604 mg L−1, respectively. Ammonia removal has reached maximal rates of 0.061 kgNH4+-N (m3 h)−1 and 0.041 kgNH4+-N (m3 h)−1, respectively. A maximum nitrite removal rate of 0.211 kgNO2-N (m3 h)−1 was observed during the strengthening denitrification. The running time of one cycle was not fixed and was actually controlled by the system. The results indicated that the running period was more closely related to influent ammonia concentration than influent COD concentration. The aeration times could be shortened and the energy could be saved. The autocontrol two-stage hybrid process is therefore an economical and effective way for landfill leachate treatment.  相似文献

The development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) brings challenges for safety issues regarding carbon dioxide (CO2) transmission pipelines. Once a pipeline is punctured or full-bore ruptured, the leaked CO2 is hazardous to personnel and the environment. Small-scale devices were established with the aim of studying the release and dispersion behaviour of gas and liquid CO2 from a punctured underground pipeline. A sandbox was built to simulate the underground conditions. The parameters of the sand used in the experiments were tested. CO2 concentrations on the ground and temperatures around the release orifice in the sand were analysed. The results indicate that in the CO2 gas release experiments, the CO2 concentration on the sand surface decreases with increasing horizontal distance in the form of a power function. CO2 concentrations in upward release are slightly larger than those in horizontal release at the same location but are obviously bigger than values in downward release. The temperature-drop region is much smaller than that in air. A frozen ice ball can be generated near the release orifice during the gas phase of the CO2-release process. In the liquid phase of CO2-release experiments, a large amount of dry ice is generated near the release orifice. Dry ice can only be generated in the area close to the release orifice, especially in the near-field area.  相似文献

The effect of turbulence on unsteady premixed flame propagation and associated pressure rise during explosion of stoichiometric CH4/air in closed spherical vessels of different size was investigated by means of CFD simulation. Computations were run by varying the vessel volume from 20 l to 200 l and to 1 m3.Numerical results have shown that, at fixed initial conditions, the turbulence kinetic energy induced by the propagating flame increases with increasing vessel volume. It has been demonstrated that the cubic relationship does not apply. Under the conditions investigated, a correction to the cubic relationship has been proposed to take into account the effect of the vessel volume on turbulence.  相似文献

The method of explosion venting is widely used in industrial explosion-proof design due to its simple operation, economical and practical features. A dump vessel vented platform was built. By changing the vacuum level and the gas in the dump vessels and the structural size of linked vessels, the pressure in the explosion vessel and the dump vessel was compared, and the influencing factors of explosion venting investigated. The main conclusions are as follows: In the explosion venting process, the higher the vacuum in the dump vessel, the smaller the pressure peak of the explosion vessel and the dump vessel, and the faster the explosion pressure is lowered. When the dump vessel is under the same vacuum level and the gas in the dump vessel is CO2, the maximum pressure of the explosion vessel and the dump vessel is less than the maximum pressure when the containment medium is air. Under the same vacuum condition, the larger the volume ratio of the dump vessel and the explosion vessel, the smaller the pressure peak of the explosion vessel, the faster the explosion pressure drops, and the volume of the dump vessel reaches or exceeds the explosion vessel. Increasing the volume ratio of the containment vessel to the explosion vessel facilitates protection of the explosion vessel and the containment vessel. Under the same vacuum condition, when the gas explosion in 113 L vessel vents into 22 L vessel, the longer the length of the pipe, the greater the maximum pressure in the spherical vessel. When the gas explosion in 22 L vessel vents into 113 L dump vessel, as the pipeline grows, the maximum pressure in the two vessels decreases, but the reduction is not significant. In practical application, it is recommended to use a vacuum of 0.08Mpa or more for the dump vessel vented, and the containment medium is CO2.In terms of the structural size of the container, it is recommended that the ratio of the receiving container to the explosion container be as large as possible, and the pipe length be as long.  相似文献
