Carotenoid- and phaeomelanin-based sexual pigmentation may signal a capacity to maintain oxidative balance and viability. However, diverse empirical results leave the association between pigmentation and oxidative stress (OS) unclear. We assessed the hypothesis that population-specific levels of oxidative challenge, or strategies for managing OS, affect relationships between sexual pigmentation and OS. Specifically, intense oxidative challenge in migratory, temperate breeding birds might enhance correlations between pigmentation and OS relative to allied tropical breeders, since quality-based differences in OS may arise only under intense oxidative challenge. Alternatively, in temperate breeders with intense within-season reproductive effort, high-quality birds may invest in reproduction over oxidative balance, dampening negative correlations between pigmentation and OS. To assess these alternatives, we compared prenesting relationships between pigmentation and OS in a migratory, Californian population of yellow warblers (Setophaga petechia brewsteri) and in a resident, Mexican population (Setophaga petechia bryanti, “mangrove warblers”). Yellow warblers displayed higher OS than mangrove warblers. However, year of capture and sex had bigger influences on correlations between pigmentation and OS than population. Males with more intense melanin pigmentation had lower OS among mangrove warblers and yellow warblers captured in 2011, but not among yellow warblers captured in 2012. In females only, lower OS levels were associated with more colorful carotenoid pigmentation. Results suggest that both phaeomelanin- and carotenoid-based pigmentation have the potential to correlate with OS levels, but that the signaling potential of pigmentation may shift with inter-annual variation in environmental conditions and display sex-specific dynamics. 相似文献

We used multi-locus DNA fingerprinting to characterise the genetic mating system of the socially monogamous yellow warbler (Dendroica petechia). Over 2 years there were no instances of brood parasitism, but 59% of families (n = 90) contained extrapair sired young and 37% of offspring (n = 355) were of extra-pair paternity. Most hypotheses for extra-pair mating in monogamous species assume a paternity benefit to extra-pair sires, and focus on the benefit(s) to females. However, the assumption of male benefit has been little tested. Among yellow warblers, known extra-pair sires were just as likely to be cuckolded as any male in the population, and there was at least one reciprocal exchange of extra-pair paternity. Nevertheless, among known extra-pair sires, the paternity gains from extra-pair paternity were, on average, greater than the losses in their own families. These results show there is a paternity benefit to certain males. However, the benefit is not absolute but relative and therefore more difficult to measure. The results also suggest that patterns of extra-pair fertilisation are not determined by female choice alone. Most confirmed extra-pair mates were territorial neighbours, but some resided as far as three territories apart, and greater spatial separation was implied in other cases. Thus, the opportunity for extra-pair mating is great. We estimate that as a result of extra-pair fertilisations, variance in male mating success is increased somewhere between 3-fold and 15-fold over that which would result from within-pair reproduction alone. These findings affirm the potential importance of extra-pair reproduction for sexual selection in monogamous species and they support earlier suggestions that extra-territorial forays by male yellow warblers are for the purpose of extra-pair mating. 相似文献

Emlen and Oring (1977) suggested that monogamy in birds is maintained because of the need for strict biparental care. A corollary of their suggestion is that paternal care should decrease under conditions of high food abundance. An alternative is that paternal care would increase if males take advantage of the higher food abundance by trying to reduce the length of the nestling feeding period. We tested these two ideas using yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia) by providing some pairs with supplemental food, thereby reducing the importance of biparental care. However, the extra food did not decrease paternal effort, nor did it increase it (Fig. 2). Early in the nestling period experimental females brooded more but visited their nestlings less than did control females, but later, when brooding times decreased, experimental females fed their nestlings more than did control females (Fig. 3). There were no significant differences in nestling survival (Fig. 5), but nestlings in the control treatment were larger and heavier up to 6 days old (Fig. 6). The main effect of supplemental food was on maternal, not paternal behaviour. Models of biparental care assume interdependence between the parental effort of both parents. Sexual selection and variation in reproductive strategy in male yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Male yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia) exhibit extensive variation in the amount and conspicuousness of the sexually distinctive brown streaking on the breast. We investigated this intraspecific variation in degree of sexual dichromatism to see if male plumage rank (essentially the amount of brown streaking) is correlated with the amount of reproductive effort allocated to parental investment, as sexual selection theory would predict. As predicted, the average rate of feeding visits to the nest by males was negatively correlated with the plumage rank of the male in 1982 (Fig. 1) and 1983 (Fig. 2), and varied little between years or among study areas. Within one study area, the higher nest visit rate of dull (low plumage rank) males was correlated with higher nestling growth rates. But in the other two study areas, where bright (high plumage rank) males predominated, nestlings of bright males tended to have the highest growth rates despite minimal nest visit rates. Thus, overall there was no correlation between male plumage rank and nestling growth rate, a potential index of relative reproductive success, in either year (Figs. 3 and 4). This overall equal nest success likely helps to maintain the behavioral and plumage polymorphism. Since we could find no evidence that the high nestling growth rates of bright males were due to an adjustment of female parental effort to compensate for low male parental effort, there must be some other benefit of being bright which contributes to nest success. To address this, we used the relationship between parental feeding rates and nestling growth rates for each nest as an index of relative territory quality. This analysis suggests that bright males generally occupy the best territories available, possibly because they are more aggressive in obtaining and defending them than dull males. Dull males appear to be relegated to poorer territories, where an increase in male parental contribution would be necessary to achieve high nestling growth rates. We propose that different males are using alternative but evolutionarily stable reproductive strategies, in a way that is consistent with the predictions of sexual selection theory. Allocation of limited reproductive effort to parental investment decreases as sexual dichromatism increases, which probably reflects an increased investment in intermale competition for the best territories. 相似文献

Summary We tested the hypothesis that the basis of the variation in reproductive strategy among male yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia) is a tradeoff in the allocation of reproductive effort to intrasexual competition (territorial effort) and to parental care (parental effort). Since a negative correlation between level of parental effort and amount of brown streaking on the breast (plumage score) has already been demonstrated in this species, this study looked for evidence of a positive correlation of territorial effort with plumage score and a negative correlation with parental effort. Analysis of the spatial and temporal use of territories, prior to egg-laying, by males with different plumage scores supported the prediction that brighter (higher plumage score) males allocate more effort to territorial establishment and maintenance (Fig. 1). Male plumage score was positively and highly significantly correlated with six different measures of the relative amount of time spent, rate of energy expended, and risk of injury assumed by each male during territorial activities. The level of territorial effort was also found to be negatively correlated with the level of parental effort expended by the same males later in the season, confirming that there is a tradeoff in allocation of reproductive effort to these two major components. Further analysis revealed that territory quality was positively correlated with male plumage score (Figs. 3 and 4), while average nestling growth rate and other indices of reproductive success were not (Fig. 6). These results suggest that increased territorial effort by brighter males enables them to occupy higher quality territories where high levels of parental effort are not necessary to maintain high levels of reproductive success. Since reproductive success was not correlated with plumage score, this study further supports the differential allocation hypothesis that different males are using alternative strategies for the allocation of reproductive effort. 相似文献

Summary Over five hundred adult longhorn milkweed beetles, Tetraopes tetraophthalmus, were individually marked and their copulatory success followed for one month in a pasture of Asclepias syriaca in northern Indiana, USA. Migration of beetles from the field site was greatest from areas of low population density. Dispersal was significantly greater for males experiencing low copulatory success; a similar but nonsignificant trend was observed for females. Large males, which displayed greater site tenacity than small males, copulated more frequently than small males because of their ability to displace small males from females. Both large and small males demonstrated a preference for large females in laboratory tests. Male preference in combination with aggressive displacement of small males results in size-assortative mating which was much stronger under conditions of high population density. It contributes to variance in male reproductive success since female size is known to be correlated with fecundity and offspring viability. Variance in copulatory success is similar for males and females, suggesting that both sexes experience similar intensities of sexual selection with respect to this component of reproductive success. Futhermore, comparison of this with other studies suggests that the intensity of sexual selection among males is positively correlated with the variance in body size which appears to be under both stabilizing and directional sexual selection in males but not in females. 相似文献

Multiple paternity in single litters conceived in the wild was recently demonstrated in meadow voles (Microtuspennsylvanicus). In this study, we used an experimental approach (males tethered and females allowed to mate freely with one or several males) to investigate the role of female meadow voles in multiple paternity. We found that among 29 (of 39) females that copulated during our experiment, 79.3% chose to mate with more than one male. Female behavior in meadow voles thus clearly promotes multiple paternity and their role is an active one. Some of the hypotheses explaining promiscuity in meadow voles should be reconsidered in light of this result. We do not know the primary determinant of female mate choice, but male body mass played a secondary role in driving female preferences. The partial dependence between male body mass and female choice, coupled with the active role played by females, indicates that intersexual selection has the potential for reinforcing the effects of intrasexual selection (male-male dominance relationships) in this species. Finally, we demonstrate that the time period over which tests are conducted is an important part of the design of experiments aimed at understanding the role of females in multiple paternity. When females receive no direct benefits from multiple matings, concurrent multiple paternity is often explained by indirect genetic benefits to offspring. To examine such possibilities, we analyzed genetic paternity for 1,272 hatchlings, representing 227 clutches, from a nesting population of painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) on the Mississippi River. Goals were to quantify the incidence and distribution of concurrent multiple paternity across clutches, examine temporal patterns of sperm storage by females, and deduce the extent to which indirect benefits result from polyandrous female behaviors. Blood samples from adult males also allowed us to genetically identify the sires of surveyed clutches and to assess phenotypic variation associated with male fitness. From the genetic data, female and male reproductive success were deduced and then interpreted together with field data to evaluate possible effects of female mating behaviors and sire identity on offspring fitness. We document that more than 30% of the clutches were likely fathered by multiple males, and that presence of multiple paternity was positively correlated with clutch size. Male willow warblers have song repertoires which vary in complexity along several dimensions. We examined whether female choice,
as measured by date of pairing, was based on these song characteristics in 4 different years. Pairing date was negatively
correlated with song repertoire size in 1 year, and with song versatility in another year, but there was no consistent effect
of any song characteristic on pairing throughout the years or in the pooled sample. The variable that best explained how soon
a male pairs is male arrival date (only males that had settled territories before the first female arrived were considered
in the analysis). This correlation is consistently significant in all years. This is most parsimoniously interpreted as females
choosing some habitat characteristic in the same way that males do. A small percentage of males (8.3%) attracted and paired
with a second female. The likelihood of becoming polygynous was not explained by any measured song characteristic, but it
was related to arrival date: early males were more likely to pair with two females. Males with large repertoires fledged more
young in their primary nests, and there was a trend for the offspring of these males to have a greater probability of being
recruited into the population. In conclusion, the results show that in most years there is no sexual selection by female preference
on song characteristics, although the data on reproductive success is consistent with the idea of repertoire size being an
indicator of male quality.

Multiple maternity and paternity in single broods of apparently monogamous eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary In an effort to assess genealogical relationships between breeding adults and their putative offspring, we collected and analyzed blood from 257 wild, uniquely color-banded eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis). Electrophoretic analysis of the protein products of two loci, esterase-2 (EST-2) and nucleoside phosphorylase (NSP), revealed that at least 5% of adult males and 15% of adult females were caring for at least one offspring not their own. Multiple parentage was evident in 9% of all broods sampled. Twenty-five percent of complete families sampled evidenced multiple parentage. Biparental care of nestlings by adult eastern bluebirds is not necessarily a reflection of the genetic kinship between putative parents and their offspring. The consort pattern among eastern bluebirds does not completely correlate with the pattern of gametic contributions, leading to a reconsideration of their mating system as possibly polygamous. This is among the first unambiguous observations of multiple patenity in a wild bird population, and of multiple maternity in a wild passerine. 相似文献

Summary Many adaptations have arisen in response to spern competition. In garter snakes, males produce copulatory plugs that are thought to prevent such competition. We tested this assumption using paternity exclusion techniques with electrophoretic data from 32 litters of snakes collected from two populations. Multiple paternity was confirmed in 50% of the litters examined (13/22 Michigan litters; 3/10 Wisconsin litters), and we estimate that as many as 72% of the litters may have been multiply sired. The presence of multiple paternity was also confirmed using the technique of genotypic regression. Mean relatedness in litters with evidence of multiple paternity was 0.390±0.053; in litters lacking such evidence mean relatedness was 0.498±0.022. Thus our data reveal a high incidence of multiple paternity in these snakes and suggest that their adaptations to prevent sperm competition are surprisingly ineffective. 相似文献

Summary The energetic cost of guarding estrous females has been assumed to be a potentially major factor in limiting the duration of male consortships in a number of polygamous species. This issue has been examined in the present study by assessing changes in the usual activity budgets of 13 male and 20 female yellow baboons which occurred during their consortships.The percent of time adult males spent feeding was strongly related to their agonistic rank: Higher-ranking males fed proportionately more than lower-ranking males while not in consort, and they showed a relatively greater decrease in feeding time during consortships.The proportion of time females spent feeding was related to their agonistic rank and (to a lesser degree) to their parity. Higher-ranking females fed more than lower-ranking females outside of consortships, and showed a relatively greater decrease in time spent feeding while in consort. Nulliparous females tended to feed more than parous females while not in consort; during consortships, the feeding time of nulliparous females decreased, while that of parous females increased slightly.The activity of male and female consort partners was most coordinated during the fertile cycle stage of the female partner, and least coordinated once the female had passed the fertile stage.Although reductions in feeding time during consortships were generally much more pronounced in males than in females, neither males nor females appeared to attain the undisturbed optimal feeding level for their sex while in consort. 相似文献

Colonies of Pocillopora spp. containing the crab Trapezia digitalis were collected from Hawaii in summer of 1979 and of 1980. Individuals of T. digitalis in Hawaii vary extensively in coloration of the carapace: crabs were separated into phenotypic classes by their degree of carapace reticulation. When presented with two females of different phenotype, males preferentially paired with the female which was similar to them in reticulation. The genetic population structure of T. digitalis was unusual by comparison with other species of Trapezia. Previously reported homozygote excesses at esterase-4, hexokinase-1, phosphoglucoseisomerase, and general protein-2 cannot be explained by the single-locus Wahlund effect, since there was not significant genetic differentiation among phenotypic classes, as measured by Wright's F
ST
statistic. There was significant variation among classes in allele frequencies at a fifth locus, hexokinase-2. Two pairs of loci were in significant gametic disequilibrium. Gametic disequilibrium was not detected in seven other species of Trapezia. It is suggested that multi-locus genetic analysis and an increased geographic sampling range are needed to determine the genetic population structure of T. digitalis in relation to observed variation in coloration. 相似文献

Summary In a population of American redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla), we determined whether a relationship exists between seasonal reproductive success (RS) and a variety of male and female morphological and behavioral characters including plumage and male song. Adult males differ dramatically in plumage from yearling males and also exhibit variable amounts of black on their breast (bib size). Adult males were more successful than yearlings in terms of the number of eggs laid by their females. Among adult males, those with smaller bibs (less black) had females that laid more eggs, and produced more hatchlings and more fledglings. We found no evidence to indicate that this result was a consequence of territory quality. We examined a number of features of song but none alone was a predictor of RS; however, one song feature (rare repeat song) correlated with bib size. When bib size and rare repeat song were analyzed simultaneously, both were found to relate to RS. No female features were predictors of RS, but females arriving earlier at the breeding site mated with males with smaller bibs. The evidence is consistent with the view that plumage of redstarts may be used as a basis for female choice.

Extra-pair paternity (EPP) can be influenced by both social setting and female mate choice. If evidence suggests that females
try to obtain extra-pair copulations (EPCs) in order to gain genetic benefits when mated to a homozygous and/or to a related
male, females may not be able to choose freely among extra-pair mates (EPMs) as the social mate may constrain female access
to EPMs. In this study, we investigated, first, how EPP depended on social setting and specifically on the number of subordinate
males in the family group in a highly social and monogamous mammal, the alpine marmot. Second, we investigated how EPP depended
on female mate choice for genetic benefits measured as male mate-heterozygosity and within-pair relatedness. Our results reveal,
first, that EPP depended on the social setting, increasing with the number of subordinate males. Second, EPPs were related
to relatedness between mates. Third, EPMs were found to be more heterozygous than within-pair males. Thus, social setting
may constrain female choice by limiting opportunities for EPC. However, after accounting for social confounding factors, female
choice for genetic benefits may be a mechanism driving EPP in monogamous species. 相似文献

Polygyny and extra-pair paternity are generally thought to enhance sexual selection. However, the extent to which these phenomena
increase variance in male reproductive success will depend on the covariance between success at these two strategies. We analysed
these patterns over four breeding seasons in facultatively polygynous blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus. We found that both polygyny and extra-pair paternity increased variance in male reproductive success and that standardised
variance in annual number of genetic fledglings was 2.6 times higher than standardised variance in apparent success when assuming
strict monogamy. Nevertheless, male success at securing within-pair paternity was unrelated to success at gaining extra-pair
paternity and, when considering the positive effect of age on extra-pair success and attracting a second female, polygynous
males were no more likely to sire extra-pair fledglings. Overall, polygynous males fledged more genetic offspring than monogamous
males, but first-year polygynous males lost a greater share of within-pair paternity. A literature review suggests that this
adverse effect of polygyny on within-pair paternity is frequent among birds, inconsistent with the prediction that females
engage in extra-pair copulation with successful males to obtain good genes. Furthermore, a male's share of paternity was repeatable
between years, and among females of polygynous males within years, such that a compatibility function of extra-pair copulations
was likewise unsupported. Instead, we suggest that the observed patterns are most consistent with a fertility insurance role
for extra-pair copulations, which does not exclude the greater opportunity for sexual selection through differential ability

Summary We investigated multiple paternity in acorn woodpeckers (Melanerpes formicivorus) from central New Mexico by starch-gel electrophoresis. Seven of thirty-one presumptive genetic loci were polymorphic. Multiple paternity was revealed in one of three multi-male groups sampled on the basis of offspring and adult electrophoretic phendtypes, and was suggested in the two other groups. The evolution of multiple sexual traits remains controversial and poorly understood in evolutionary biology. In many bird species, males exhibit complex courtships involving feather ornaments and behavioral display. Multiple traits may convey information on the genetic and phenotypic quality of males. In particular, fixed characters, such as feather ornaments (produced once a year during the annual molt in many bird species) might convey information about past male condition (at the time of trait development); whereas flexible traits such as behavioral displays should be sensitive to present condition. Here we show that both flexible behavioral displays and fixed feather ornaments of peacocks, used by females to choose a mate, honestly reflect health status. Correlative data showed that peacocks with high display rate (the number of behavioral displays per hour) and a large number of tail eyespots had low levels of circulating heterophils, suggesting better health status. Experimental activation of the immune system, through LPS injection, significantly reduced display rate compared to a control group. However, the sensitivity of a male display rate to the immune challenge was dependent on the number of tail eyespots: males with higher number of tail eyespots were better able to cope with the experimental immune challenge, and maintained their display rate at levels closer to the levels performed before the immune activation. The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) is a socially monogamous passerine which usually breeds in colonies where extra-pair copulations are frequent. Males intensively
guard their mates during the female fertile period. Since males are more likely to be available for extra-pair copulations
when their mate is not fertile, synchrony in timing of breeding may affect paternity of individual males. In this study, we
analysed the change in mate-guarding rate by males in relation to the fertility condition of the female, and the relationships
between breeding synchrony and density with paternity in first broods of 52 male barn swallows. Paternity (proportion of nestlings
fathered in own brood) was assessed by typing of three highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. Mate guarding by males peaked
during the fertile period of their mates. Paternity increased as breeding synchrony in the colony increased. Paternity of
barn swallows is positively associated with the degree of exaggeration of male tail ornaments. The relationship between male
ornamentation and paternity was partly mediated by an effect of ornament size on breeding synchrony. We suggest that females
might delay breeding with low-quality males to enhance their opportunities for being fertilised by high-quality extra-pair
males.

Males are generally predicted to care less for their young when they have more additional mating opportunities, lower paternity,
or when their mates care more. We tested these predictions using male provisioning as a proxy for paternal care in two temperate
populations of house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) with divergent life histories. Males in the migratory, occasionally socially polygynous New York, USA (northern) population
provisioned less when more local females were fertile. A similar relationship was only weakly supported in the resident, socially
monogamous Buenos Aires Province, Argentina (southern) population, possibly due to the higher density of house wrens there.
A relationship between male provisioning and level of paternity within the brood was supported in both populations, but in
opposite directions: while males in the southern population provisioned less at broods containing more extra-pair young, males
in the northern population provisioned such broods more, contradicting predictions. Males provisioned less when their mates
provisioned more in both populations, in agreement with sexual conflict theory. Additionally, the populations both exhibited
a positive relationship between male provisioning and nestling age, but differed in the direction of the relationships of
male provisioning with date and brood size. Our results suggest that even within a species, life history differences may be
accompanied by differences in the determinants of behavior such as paternal care. 相似文献
