Intertidal macroalgae may spend a significant part of their lives in air. During photosynthesis in air, they encounter much
lower concentrations of inorganic carbon than in seawater. Because they accumulate inorganic carbon from seawater, we investigated
whether they similarly accumulate it from air. We measured photosynthesis in the intertidal species Fucus vesiculosus L. during 1990 and 1991 with a gas-phase O2 electrode or CO2-exchange apparatus in air and with a liquid-phase O2 electrode in seawater. Maximum rates were rapid and similar in air and seawater regardless of the method. Tissue from seawater
could carry on photosynthesis in CO2-free air, indicating that carbon was stored in the tissue. After 2 h, this store was depleted and photosynthesis ceased.
Supplying CO2 in air replenished the store. Under identical conditions, terrestrial C3 and C4 species showed no evidence of this store, but a CAM (crassulacean acid metabolism) species did. However, in contrast to the
CAM behavior, F. vesiculosus did not store CO2 significantly in the dark. We found a small acid-releasable pool of carbon in the tissue that disappeared as photosynthesis
depleted the carbon store. However, the pool was too small to account for the total carbon stored. While CO2 was being acquired or released from the store in the light, photosynthesis was not inhibited by 21% O2. These results indicate that there are two parallel paths for the supply of CO2 to photosynthesis. The first depends on inorganic carbon in seawater or in air and supports rapid photosynthesis. The second
involves CO2 slowly released from an organic intermediate. The release protects CO2 fixation from the inhibitory effects of 21% O2. Photosynthesis in F. vesiculosus thus appears to be C3-like in its rapid fixation of CO2 from a small inorganic pool into phosphoglycerate. However, it is C4-like in its pre-fixation of carbon in an organic pool in the light, and is CAM-like in its ability to slowly use this pool
as a sole source of CO2. The organic pool may serve to protect photosynthetic CO2 fixation against the inhibitory effects of O2 in air and in the boundary layer in seawater.

Cardium edule L. and C. glaucum Bruguière are two sibling species of cockles commonly found in littoral systems along the Portuguese coast, where they sometimes occur as mixed populations. The problem of morphological separation of these two cockle species has not been completely solved. Indeed, the distinctive morphological criterion proposed by Brock after identifying the specimens by means of electrophoretic patterns of hepatopancreatic malate dehydrogenase was not effective when applied to Portuguese Cardium spp. The object of the present study was to establish morphological discrimination criteria for distinguishing Portuguese C. edule and C. glaucum on the basis of initial identification of individuals through the enzymatic criterion established by Brock. Cockles were collected from 1988 to 1991 at 16 estuarine and lagoonal systems along the Portuguese coast. Hepatopancreatic extracts were submitted to horizontal starch gel electrophoresis following Brock's procedure. The malate dehydrogenase patterns obtained were identical to those found by Brock. Clear interspecific differences in the leucine aminopeptidase and esterase isozyme systems were also detected. The morphological study of the shells involved 7 morphometric and 9 qualitative and semiquantitative characters. Canonical variate analysis of the morphometric characters showed that these could not be used for identification purposes. However, a clear separation between the two species was obtained by a principal-component analysis of qualitative and semiquantitative characters. The characters mainly useful for distinguishing between the two species were valve profile, shape of ventral valve junction, type of calcareous scales and shell colour. 相似文献

We monitored the photosynthetic response of an estuarine epilithic microflora exposed to natural variations in water level and light intensity. The experimental community developed on an artificial substrate in the intertidal zone of the St. Lawrence estuary. Fragilaria striatula dominated the assemblage. ) per unit Chl a were estimated. During spring tide, wave-induced turbulence reaching the experimental substrate at low tide eroded the arborescent stratum of the cell mat. The physiological condition of the remaining prostrate stratum was poor (low Chl a/ phaeopigment ratio). The photosynthetic response of the community was weak and showed little variability. During neap tide, the arborescent stratum of the permanently inundated community persisted. The community showed a stronger and more variable photosythetic response. Owing to the worldwide growth of aquaculture over the last years, new habitats have been created through the supplement of nutrients. This addition of nutrients affects the whole marine food web, resulting in predator species such as bottlenose dolphins becoming attracted to these areas. During this 5-year-long study that was carried out along the north-eastern coast of Sardinia (Italy), bottlenose dolphin’s history of exposure to aquaculture perturbations and their effects was documented. The interaction with a fish farm was assessed by studying the site fidelity, group dynamics, and seasonal and yearly occurrence. In all, 1,838 hours were spent in the field. Behavioural observations showed that the predominant activity (89 % of the time) in the fish farm was foraging (predation and depredation). The occurrence of bottlenose dolphins appeared to be related with the seasons and with the fish farm harvesting operations. Thus, the peak dolphin occurrence in the fish farm area throughout Fall coincides with the period in which they spend most of their time foraging. A relatively small community remained resident interacting with the fish farm over a long period of time. Hence, these individuals gained intimate knowledge on how to capitalize on the fish farm industry. This heterogeneity in site fidelity and residence patterns is highly relevant when coastal management initiatives are considered. 相似文献

Nests of Lasius niger (L.) ants were given varied food regimens to test whether their behaviour towards an aphid partner, Aphis fabae (Scop.), changed with alternative food supplies. Honeydew collection and predation on aphids were measured by video monitoring the movement of ants between their nest and an aphid aggregation. Data collected from the aphid aggregations enabled comparisons between remaining aphid biomass and between the tending intensities of the ants. I tested how ant behaviour was influenced by their access to alternative prey and sugar. The results showed that ants accepted a honey solution as a substitute for the honeydew produced by aphids. Ants not only attended their aphid partners, but also preyed on them. The average predation rate increased eightfold when ants were offered the alternative of sugar, whereas alternative prey had no significant effect. In contrast, ant-tending intensity decreased with alternative sugar whereas alternative prey elicited no effect. 相似文献

Very high resolution imagery from an airborne multi-spectrål scanner has been used to estimate the distribution of different salt-marsh communities along a 30-km stretch of the North Norfolk coast. Field observations have been used to develop a mathematical relationship between the vegetation, physical environment and sediment accumulation. 采用室内模拟实验,研究了土壤中乐果与微生物的相互作用.结果表明:(1)50、500、5 000 mg·kg-1的乐果在灭菌土中的降解速度十分缓慢,加药后15d,50 mg·kg-1的降解率为69.3%,500 mg·kg-1的降解率为26.7%,5 000 mg·kg-1的降解率为19.6%.在施过乐果的土壤中的降解速度非常迅速,加药后15d,50 mg·kg-1的降解率为99.7%,500 mg·kg-1的降解率为78.4%,5 000 mg·kg-1的降解率为54.6%.在未施过乐果的土壤中的降解速度则介于二者之间.说明微生物在乐果的降解中起着非常重要的作用,同时,施药可以诱发乐果降解菌的生成从而加速乐果的降解.(2)在各处理的土壤中,50 mg·k-1的乐果对细菌数星有一定的刺激作用,500、5 000 mg·kg-1的乐果抑制细菌的生长.且随质量浓度的升高,抑制作用增强.但随加药时间的延长,又有所恢复.3种不同质量浓度的乐果对土壤真菌和放线菌种群数量的影响均表现为明显的抑制作用,且随药剂质量浓度的提高和加药时间的延长抑制趋势越明显.因此,可以选择真菌和放线菌作为土壤受乐果污染的敏感指示菌.(3)在同样处理条件下,施过乐果土壤中的微生物种群数量并不比未施过乐果土壤中的占优势,表明乐果在施过药的土壤中降解速度的加快并不是由微生物的数量决定的,而是由它们的降解能力决定的. 相似文献

In open channel, canals and rivers, a rapid increase in flow depth will induce a positive surge, also called bore or compression wave. The positive surge is a translating hydraulic jump. Herein new experiments were conducted in a large-size rectangular channel to characterise the unsteady turbulent properties, including the coupling between free-surface and velocity fluctuations. Experiments were repeated 25 times and the data analyses yielded the instantaneous median and instantaneous fluctuations of free-surface elevation, velocities and turbulent Reynolds stresses. The passage of the surge front was associated with large free-surface fluctuations, comparable to those observed in stationary hydraulic jumps, coupled with large instantaneous velocity fluctuations. The bore propagation was associated with large turbulent Reynolds stresses and instantaneous shear stress fluctuations, during the passage of the surge. A broad range of shear stress levels was observed underneath the bore front, with the probability density of the tangential stresses distributed normally and the normal stresses distributed in a skewed single-mode fashion. Maxima in normal and tangential stresses were observed shortly after the passage of a breaking bore roller toe. The maximum Reynolds stresses occurred after the occurrence of the maximum free-surface fluctuations, and this time lag implied some interaction between the free-surface fluctuations and shear stress fluctuations beneath the surge front, and possibly some causal effect. 相似文献

Two species of blue mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis and M. trossulus, co-occur and hybridize along the Pacific coast of North America. Using a set of polymerase chain-reaction (PCR)-based genetic
markers which diagnostically identify these species, we show that they are sympatric from the Cape Mendocino region to the
Monterey Peninsula in northern and central California, USA. Mussels with hybrid genotypes were detected in all populations
sampled in the region of sympatry, and the frequency of hybrid genotypes in individual hybrid populations ranged from 13 to
44%. Significant frequencies of first-generation backcross genotypes were detected in two individual hybrid zone populations
(Berkeley and Monterey Marina) and in the hybrid zone as a whole, indicating that the potential exists for introgression between
M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus. Despite this potential, we found no evidence of advanced introgression beyond first-generation backcrosses, suggesting that
gene flow between M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus has been quite limited. The frequency of mussels with M. trossulus and hybrid genotypes declined abruptly south of Monterey Peninsula, while the frequency of mussels with M. galloprovincialis and hybrid genotypes declined precipitously north of Cape Mendocino. These abrupt genetic discontinuities indicate that this
blue mussel hybrid zone is presently positioned between two prominent coastal features and there is little, if any, export
of alleles from the hybrid zone into bordering parental populations.

Astract Northern anchovy larvae, Engraulis mordax, were collected on five cruises covering the Southern California Bight, one cruise in April 1984, four cruises in January, February and May 1986. The amounts of triacylglycerol, cholesterol and polar lipid were measured in individual anchovy larvae as indicators of their nutritional condition. There was a significant difference in each of the size-specific lipid components between the stations for four of the five cruises. This indicates that all the ocean habitats within a cruise were not equal in promoting growth (and presumably survival) in the anchovy larvae. There were also differences between cruises, where the percentage of the larvae judged to be in poor condition varied from 8 to 27%. Canonical correlation analyses revealed a significant relationship in most cases between the larval fish parameters and the physical and biological data collected from each occupied station. Cholesterol and triacylglycerol were the most important larval components, and the short-term energy storage component in the copepod Calanus pacificus was the most important station component. The data, however, are not sufficient to identify and characterize stations in the field which produce anchovy larvae in good condition. 相似文献

Since the beginning of the 20th century the Belgian coast has undergone important changes of which an overview is presented
here. To determine the view of the Belgian public on the Belgian coast and in order to obtain their opinions and solutions
to the problems along the Belgian coast, a questionnaire survey was conducted with a total of 100 respondents divided into
five groups, all active in the coastal zone. The five groups included (1) politicians on various levels of authority, (2)
coastal entrepreneurs and business people, (3) naturalists and scientists, (4) coastal residents and (5) tourists. Coastal
zone problems, as perceived by the different groups, and their solutions are discussed. Former municipalities, in particular,
were held responsible for the current coastal problems. Most respondents were skeptic about the application of recent juridical
instruments (e.g. the Dune Decree), the structural plans and their power to protect the remaining natural areas. The root
of the problems seems to lie in lack of coordination and communication between different authorities responsible for the coastal

The fiddler crab Uca crenulata, from California (USA), was exposed to artificial tides in order to differentiate between the influence of a tidal cycle from that of a light-dark cycle on its locomotor activity. Most crabs could be well synchronized by tides, but the activity patterns of other crabs was merely exogenously reinforced. Under constant conditions, after tidal treatment, crabs showed bimodal or unimodal activity patterns. When a 24 h light-dark cycle and a 12.35 h tidal cycle acted as concurrent stimuli, their effectiveness in synchronizing the crabs' activity was variable, depending on the undividual. It is likely that crabs which tend to exhibit a unimodal activity pattern are more sensitive to a light stimulus, whereas crabs with a bimodal activity pattern respond preferably to the tides. Thus, responses of endogenous activity of U. crenulata to tides and light-dark cycles are similar, suggesting that the basic oscillarory mechanism for circadian and tidal activity may be the same. 相似文献

Sea-level rise as a result of climate change increases inundation and erosion, which are affected by a complex interplay of
physical environmental parameters at the coast. China’s coast is vulnerable to accelerated sea-level rise and associated coastal
flooding because of physical and socio-economical factors such as its low topography, highly developed economy, and highly
dense population. To identify vulnerable sections of the coast, this paper presents a national assessment of the vulnerability
of the Chinese coast using 8 physical variables: sea-level rise, coastal geomorphology, elevation, slope, shoreline erosion,
land use, mean tide range, and mean wave height. A coastal vulnerability index was calculated by integrating the differentially
weighted rank values of the 8 variables, based on which the coastline is segmented into 4 classes. The results show that 3%
of the 18,000-km-long Chinese coast is very highly vulnerable, 29% is highly vulnerable, 58% is moderately vulnerable, and
10% is in the low-vulnerable class. Findings further reveal that large amounts of land and population will be vulnerable to
inundation by coastal flooding from sea level rise and storm surge. Finally, some suggestions are presented for decision makers
and other concerned stakeholders to develop appropriate coastal zone management and mitigation measures. 相似文献

Trace metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Ni, Co, Zn, Hg, As, Mn, Al, Fe, and Li) and organic compounds (PCBs, PAHs, lindanes, and DDT and its degradation products) were measured in coastal sediment samples from 27 sites in lagoons and along coastal areas of Corsica. An oyster embryo bioassay evaluated the toxicity of sediments from sites in three coastal lagoons (Urbino, Diane, and Biguglia) and the west coast of Cape Corsica. Despite contamination levels generally lower than those in other Mediterranean coastal areas, contamination is found in specific sites in Corsica and includes natural arsenic contamination on the east coast, insecticide pollution (persistent lindane and DDT) in many areas, both cadmium and lead contamination around Sagone, general contamination of both main harbours (Bastia and Ajaccio) and their surrounding areas, and asbestos mining residues in western Cape Corsica. Monitoring development of Crassostrea gigas embryos showed toxic effects at sites near a factory on Cape Corsica, with up to 100% mortality of larvae, and lower levels of toxicity at Sagone (44% mortality) and in the three coastal lagoons (up to 28% mortality). Results of this regional study show the need for further monitoring to understand the environmental issues facing the Corsican coast. 相似文献

Cocos Bay is a barrier beach under threat of marine erosion from the high energy environment of the Atlantic Ocean. This barrier beach borders the Ramsar listed Nariva Swamp, and helps maintain its delicate wetland ecosystem, however, ongoing coastal erosion at this beach threatens the longevity of this freshwater wetland. Due to the geographical location of Cocos Bay being exposed to Atlantic generated storm events and the low relief of the study area, there is a potential threat of storm surges breaching the barrier beach. Owing to the geological setting of the region (located in an active seismic province with earthquakes, volcanicity and landslides), there also exists the threat of tsunamis. This paper is a GIS simulation of the area extent of inundation and the affected infrastructure from such events. It utilizes a DEM and land-use to quantifying inundation areas, and the extent of vulnerability of various elements. The low relief of the barrier beach renders the area extremely vulnerable from events that trigger sea level increases. Simulations revealed that as little as a 1 m storm surge has the potential to disrupt the Nariva Swamp and threaten coastal infrastructure while higher storm surges and tsunamis have the potential to decimate the entire area. The flood-risk model generated indicates a very high vulnerability to storm surges, along the entire length of the coastline. These results have implications for future development and sustainable management of this ecologically sensitive area. 相似文献

The head Bay region bordering the Bay of Bengal is highly vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Catastrophic risks from storm surge and associated inundation are quite high due to high population density in coastal areas, socio-economic conditions, and shallow bathymetry. It features the world’s largest deltaic system comprising of ‘Sunderbans’ bordered by West Bengal and Bangladesh. In a geomorphologic sense, the head Bay region is a low-lying belt comprising several barrier islands and river drainage systems, numerous tidal creeks, and mud flats having a high risk for widespread inundation. In addition, the high tidal range together with low-lying topography leads to high risk and vulnerability from storm surge inundation. During May 2009, a severe cyclonic storm Aila struck West Bengal causing enormous destruction to life and property along coastal belts of West Bengal and Bangladesh. It was the strongest pre-monsoon cyclone in the past two decades that had landfall in West Bengal. This work reports on a numerical study for hypothetical storm surge and associated inundation from Aila using the ADCIRC model. The study covers a comprehensive qualitative analysis on water level elevation and onshore inundation for West Bengal and Bangladesh regions. The estimated peak storm surge was about 4 m in the Sunderban region that propagated into all major riverine systems, inundating the river banks as well the inland areas. Numerical simulations indicate an average inland penetration distance of 350 m with a maximum of 600 m at various coastal locations in West Bengal and Bangladesh. Over the 20th century, reduced land cultivation has caused an extension of fallow land in several European countries, which
has led to a decrease in biodiversity. Knowledge of dynamic vegetation processes and of the impact of human activities on
biodiversity provides the basis for land management recommendations, as well as for wildlife management programs. We analysed
land-use changes on a small protected island (Ushant, Bretagne, France) using historical documentation (1844) and aerial photographs
taken in 1952 and 1992. Over this period, especially during the last 40 yr, Ushant underwent a complete transformation from
rural landscape to extensive shrubland. No cultivated area remains, grazed areas were moved from the coastal fringe to the
core of the island, while over 40% of the island is fallow land. The relationship between current sheep grazing and vegetation
suggests that grazed meadows used to be close to inhabited areas, i.e. 150 m outside the villages. These results allowed us
to analyse landcover potential related to changes in the intensity of sheep grazing. The scenarios highlighted by our method
provide an objective framework for further assessment of fallow land management. 相似文献

Portugal is strongly vulnerable to sea hazards due to intense vessel traffic and sea conditions. The southwest region off the Iberian Peninsula lies in the main route from the Mediterranean and Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Europe, causing a ship concentration in a narrow band off Cape S?o Vicente. Tankers represent a significant part of the vessel traffic and the occurrence of oil spills cannot be disregarded. Cape S?o Vicente region is part of a Natural Park with 110 Km of coastline, integrated in the European Natura 2000 network and its socio-economic context is closely related with sea resources exploitation, particularly fishing and tourism. Recognizing the importance of accurate information systems for the decision making process in an oil spill situation, this work presents the development of an integrated tool to support the process in the Algarve coast. The system relies in a regional operational mathematical model based on the MOHID modelling system. The system core is composed by three models (3D hydrodynamics, wave and Lagrangian transport) all linked in the same system and exchanging information in real time. Oil advection and weathering processes are coupled to the Lagragian transport model. The overall operational system includes external operational data products as inputs, to ensure a successful validation of the results. The system is linked to stakeholders and response authorities using a geographic referenced database based on Mapserver technology that will include relevant information for oil spill management. 相似文献
