Temperature relationships of some tropical Pacific intertidal gastropods   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Tissue and environmental-temperature measurements were made using thermistors in Hawaii, Guam, Palau and Singapore in the summer of 1970. Limpets have a very limited ability to regulate body temperature, and several species possessed tissue temperatures greater than those of the substratum. Some neritids and the trochid Monodonta labio possessed tissue temperatures as much as 2.2° to 2.8°C below substratum temperature. Littorinids attached by a mucus film to the substratum were found to have relatively lower body temperatures than those attached by the foot. Among neritids there is a tendency for high intertidal species to be better temperature regulators than low intertidal species. A very important factor in the temperature regulation of intertidal snails appears to be the extent of the area of contact between the animal and the substratum, which is greatest in limpets and least (negligible) in littorinids. Evaporative cooling and light coloration of the shell play a role in certain species and groups.  相似文献

Although prey-detecting and searching abilities of predatory leeches of rhynchobdellid or the Erpobdelliformes of arhynchobdellid species have been studied in the past, hirudiniformes leeches are rarely mentioned. In this study, we investigated the chemosensory ability for prey-detecting and searching in Whitmania laevis, a hirudiniformes species that mainly preys on freshwater snails, and examined if such ability aided in their prey selection. Five sympatric snail species, i.e., apple snail Pomacea canaliculata, thiarid snail Thiara tuberculata, viviparid snail Sinotaia quadrata, ear pond snail Radix auricularia swinhoei and tadpole snail Physa acuta were used as prey. Our results showed that W. laevis has the chemosensory ability to detect the waterborne odors of snails. However, they follow the snails by their mucus trails, and not by the odor that the snails leave in the water. Of these five snail species, W. laevis only followed the trails of the thiarid snails, ear pond snails and tadpole snails, and did not show a different response to the trails produced by snails of different sizes. Our results suggest that W. laevis can use waterborne odors to detect the existence of prey. They rely on mucus trails to follow their preferred prey, but do not distinguish between snails of a preferred size by their mucus trails. In addition, when following the trail of a preferred snail, W. laevis exhibits a newly described searching behavior, i.e., head tapping, and may use it to locate a snail trail and increase its probability of finding the trail-laying snail nearby.  相似文献

Despite their potential importance in structuring reef communities, invertebrate corallivores and their population structures are poorly understood. We found distinct differences in the population structures (length-frequency distribution and sex ratio) of the corallivorous gastropod Coralliophila abbreviata residing on two coral-host taxa, Montastraea spp. and Acropora palmata, in the Florida Keys. In each of two survey years, around 50% of the Montastraea spp. colonies were infested, with a mean snail density of eight snails per infested colony (range 1–45), while around 20% of A. palmata colonies harbored three snails per infested colony (range 1–23). Variation in patterns of snail occurrence was also observed within a host taxon. A. palmata occurred in low- and high-density stands (0.4 and 1 colony m–2, respectively, at the initial survey) at different sites. Hurricane Georges struck the area in September 1998. When resurveyed in 1999, density of colonies in low-density stands had decreased by 75% to 0.1 colonies m–2. This decrease was accompanied by a doubling in the proportion of colonies infested with snails (from 19% to 46%) and an increase in snail density per infested colony (from 3.7±3.3 SD to 5.4±4.6 SD) as snails apparently concentrated on surviving A. palmata. In contrast, sites with high density A. palmata stands (thickets) retained colony densities of about ~1 colony m–2 among years, while snail infestation increased only from 9% to 14% of colonies surveyed and snail density essentially remained unchanged (from 2.7±1.8 to 2.9±1.9 snails per infested colony). Snails collected from Montastraea spp. were shorter than those from A. palmata in low-density stands and were longest on A. palmata in thickets. On both host taxa, female snails were longer than males. The sex ratio of snails on Montastraea spp. hosts was even (1:1), while that of snails on A. palmata was skewed (70% males). Factors that could explain observed differences in size structure and sex ratio between Coralliophila populations on the two coral host taxa include: differential susceptibility to predators, influence of host tissue nutritional quality and/or secondary metabolite content, and genetic differences (cryptic species). The host-specific characteristics of C. abbreviata populations imply that the impact of gastropods on reef communities will vary with the coral species composition.  相似文献

The trochid snail Monodonta articulata Lamarck was exposed to mercuric sulphate at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++. At 24 h, retraction into the shell was observed in 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++; this retraction increased in these concentrations at 36 h. Retracted snails died if retained in the solutions, but generally recovered within 24 to 48 h if transferred to uncontaminated sea water. Immersionemersion behaviour and interface activity were studied over 24 h by means of an aktograph; snails in normal sea water spent more time below than above the water surface, and exhibited frequent periods of activity. Exposure to mercuric sulphate at concentration of 0.25, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++ progressively reduced both the length and frequency of activity periods. From 0.5 ppm Hg++ upwards, emersion periods increased, and immersion periods decreased. Oxygen consumption of snails was measured in sea water and in mercuric sulphate at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++. Oxygen consumption decreased significantly with each progressive rise in mercury concentration. It is considered that mercury affects M. articulata by interfering with respiration, initially reducing interface activity, then forcing the snail for longer and longer periods out of the water. Retraction occurs when activity is no longer possible. It is concluded that respiratory and behavioural alterations of this nature would afford a good indicator of the presence of sub-lethal concentrations of pollutants.  相似文献

Abstract:  Limestone (karst) outcrops in Southeast Asia are rich in land snails. Certain groups of land snails, in particular Prosobranchia species, are restricted to limestone and show a high degree of short-range endemism. Karst habitats are, however, seriously degraded by quarrying, logging, agriculture, and burning. The effect of these disturbances on land snail fauna is unknown, so we studied paired primary and secondary forest localities on six separate limestone hills in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Land snails were sampled with a standard protocol and identified to species level. More than 16,000 individuals, belonging to 74 species, were recorded. In most sites, snail diversities did not differ between disturbed and undisturbed plots. However, pulmonate snails were significantly more abundant at disturbed localities than prosobranch snails, whereas abundances for both groups were similar at undisturbed sites. Because Prosobranchia contain many site-endemic species, our findings suggest that continued exposure to these disturbances will eventually lead to extinctions in this group.  相似文献

Within a Federal Environmental Agency research project to develop a biological test for hormone-mimetic compounds using the freshwater snail Marisa cornuarietis, the effects of the suspected xenoestrogenic substance bisphenol A (BPA), not only on freshwater but also on marine prosobranch snails, were investigated. For the laboratory experiments the ramshorn snail Marisa cornuarietis and the ovoviviparous snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum were considered as freshwater species and two marine prosobranchs, the netted whelk Nassarius reticulatus and the dog whelk Nucella lapillus, were additionally employed. N. reticulatus, as a typical sediment-living species, was exposed via artificial sediments, while the three other prosobranchs were exposed via water. The test series with Marisa cornuarietis covered a nominal concentration range between 1 and 100 μg BPA/l in a 5 month experiment with adult snails and a complete life cycle test for 12 months. Additionally, a third test in the nominal range between 0.05 and 1 μg BPA/l (measured: 0.0079–0.404 μg/l) was performed with adults snails for 6 months. In these experiments, BPA induced a complex syndrome of physiological and morphological alterations in female Marisa referred to as the induction of ‘superfemales’. Affected specimens were characterised by the formation of additional female organs, an enlargement of the accessory pallial sex glands, gross malformations of the pallial oviduct section resulting in an increased female mortality, and a massive stimulation of oocyte and spawning mass production. For these tests, an LOEC of 48.3 ng/l, an NOEC of 7.9 ng/l and an EC10 of 13.9 ng/l were calculated. Superfemales occurred also in the BPA exposure experiment with the other snail species, but comparable oviduct malformations as in Marisa were not found, probably due to species differences in the gross anatomical structure of the pallial oviduct. During the 9 week test with Potamopyrgus antipodarum in the nominal concentration range between 1 and 100 μg/l, BPA induced an enhancement of embryo production even in the sexual repose phase of the reproductive cycle. A characteristic inverted U-type concentration response relationship was found. Nassarius reticulatus was exposed via BPA-spiked artificial sediments (nominal concentration range: 10–1000 μg/kg dry wt.) for 3 months. BPA exhibited a significant and concentration dependent uterotrophic effect which could be detected not only by an enlargement but also by a weight increase of the accessory pallial gland complex in the pallial oviduct section. Adult Nucella lapillus were tested for three months in the laboratory in a nominal concentration range between 1 and 100 μg BPA/l. Superfemales in the dog whelk were also characterised by enlarged accessory pallial sex glands and an enhancement of egg production, but the test compound also affected the males in this species. A lower percentage of exposed specimens had ripe sperm stored in their vesicula seminalis and male Nucella exhibited a reduced length of penis and prostate gland when compared to the control. Because statistically significant effects were observed already at the lowest nominal test concentration (1 μg/l), it can be assumed that even lower concentrations may have a negative impact on the snails. The results show that prosobranch snails are affected by BPA at lower concentrations compared to other systematic taxa in the animal kingdom. Consequently, it has to be claimed that the results of these experiment have to be considered for the current EU risk assessment for BPA in order to achieve a sufficient protection of wildlife in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

In any polluted marine environment, different invertebrate species contain markedly different concentrations of heavy metals. Primary producers take metals from seawater, but animals take additional metals from diets of animals, plants and detritus. Metals in a dietary organism of a food chain have varying reactivities and they follow different biochemical pathways. Excess metals are bound by ligands to form insoluble compounds within cytological compartments. These metabolic systems prevent the disruption of normal biochemical reactions by metals. The present work on Mediterranean invertebrates, initiated in Greece in 1993, used digestive glands from three species of marine snail,Monodonta mutabilis (Philippi),Cerithium vulgatum (Bruguière), andMurex trunculus (Linnaeus) as prey tissue, and hermit crabsClibanarius erythropus (Latreille) as predators; the digestive glands and faecal pellets from all animals were analysed by atomic absorption spectroscopy and x-ray microanalysis. Most metals detoxified by the snails are unavailable to the crabs and they pass straight through the gut and appear in the faecal pellets. This applies to significant proportions of the manganese, nickel, copper, zinc and silver which are bound electrostatically to phosphate or covalently to sulphur within membrane-bound intracellular compartments. Cadmium and chromium are transferred to the crabs. In digestive glands of snails, cadmium is bound to soluble highsulphur protein in the cytosol; the cytology of chromium in these animals is not known.  相似文献

The hermit crab Pagurus longicarpus was shown to inhabit shells that were partially predated from intertidal areas of Long Island, New York. Among field collections of P. longicarpus, 2.13% of the hermit crabs (46 of 2155) were found with shells with snail tissue present. Over 90% of these partially predated snail shells were occupied by male hermit crabs. Although hermit crabs were in 8 species of snail shells, only Littorina littorea and Nassarius obsoletus were found occupied by hermit crabs and containing snail tissue. In the laboratory, we found that specimens of the spider crab Libinia emarginata were able to pull off the operculum of snails, leaving damage as found in field collections. In contrast, specimens of P. longicarpus were not able to prey on live, healthy snails. When specimens of P. longicarpus were placed in communal tanks, hermit crabs preferred partially predated snail shells to empty and original shells. However, original shells and empty shells were occupied with more frequency than partially predated shells when crabs were isolated. These findings indicate P. longicarpus actively seeks shells soon after attack and abandonment by snail predators, especially in the presence of competitors.  相似文献

High-rocky-shore intertidal animals are predicted to be generally more vulnerable to climate warming than lower-shore species, because their thermal tolerances lie closer to maximum environmental temperatures (T e). However, this prediction is based on taxonomically and ecologically limited information. The present study investigated the effect of habitat use on climate warming vulnerability of the tropical high-shore snail, Echinolittorina malaccana (from Brunei Darussalam, 5°N), which aestivates in sun-exposed or shaded habitats. The thermal regimes of these habitats differed vastly, but snails showed similar daily energy consumption in either habitat, due to temperature-insensitive metabolism (TIM) between 35 and 46 °C in the sun-resting snails. However, maximum T e values in the shade and the sun were 35 and 46 °C, respectively, suggesting that sun-resting snails, which presently experience temperatures near the incipient lethal temperature range (46–56 °C), should be more threatened by further warming than shade-resting snails, which have an 11 °C ‘safety margin’. Thus, vulnerability of high-shore species to climate warming could be moderated by availability of shaded habitat, making predictions for these species more complex than previously realized.  相似文献

Substratum relationships of some tropical Pacific intertidal gastropods   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Among tropical Indo-West Pacific herbivorous intertidal gastropods, high intertidal neritids, and limpets and certain lower intertidal limpets are restricted to a narrow range of substratum types. Littorinids, planaxids, low intertidal neritids, most lower intertidal limpets, and the trochid Monodonta labio tolerate a wide variety of substrata. This pattern of substratum specialization is related to the overall adaptive strategies of the various groups: those with a large area of soft tissue in contact with the substratum (neritids and limpets) often specialize to a particular substratum, especially at high shore levels, while those in which the area of contact between animal and substratum is small do not. High intertidal neritids and limpets able to live on a wide range of substrata tend to be species of limited geographic distribution. It is concluded that, even within a tropically similar group of animals (raspers in this case) relevant dimensions of niche separation depend upon the structure of the environment as well as upon the structure of the animals themselves.  相似文献

In this study we examined how the variation in the distribution of six species of seabird trematodes was influenced by human activities along the subarctic Barents Sea coast of northern Norway. This was done by comparing the prevalence of the parasites in two species of intermediate host (Littorinasaxatilis and Littorina obtusata) on seashores near fishing industry complexes, fish farms and at control sites. In L. saxatilis there were higher prevalences at sites influenced by human activities for three out of five trematode species (Microphallus piriformes,  M. similis, Cryptocotyle lingua) which have gulls (Larus spp.) as their predominant final hosts, while in L. obtusata, only  M. similis was more common at sites with human activity. For  M. pygmaeus, a trematode which has the common eider (Somateria mollissima) as its most predominant final host, the prevalence in L.saxatilis tended to be higher at sites with fishing industry, but differences were not significant. No such tendency was found in L. obtusata for this trematode. The overall prevalence in L. obtusata was lower than in L.␣saxatilis. This indicates that the vulnerability to trematode infection differs between the two snail species depending on the variation in the distribution patterns in the intertidal zone. Gulls tend to concentrate in areas near fishing industry and fish farms to feed on fish offal, which leads to an increase in the transmission between hosts, and to a higher level of parasite infection, locally. Abstract: Digenean trematode parasites require multiple host species to complete their life cycles, and their abundance can often be strongly correlated with the abundance of their host species. Species richness and abundance of parasites in easily sampled host species may yield an accurate estimate of the species richness and abundance of other hosts in a parasite's life cycle that are difficult to survey directly. Accordingly, we investigated whether prevalence and mean abundance of trematodes could be used to estimate the abundance of one of their host species, diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin), which are difficult to sample and are designated as near threatened (by the International Union for Conservation of Nature [IUCN Red List]) along some U.S. coasts. As an adult the trematode Pleurogonius malaclemys is specific to terrapins. Its larval stages live first inside mud snails (Ilyanassa obsoleta) and are subsequently shed into the environment where they form external metacercarial cysts on hard surfaces such as snail opercula. The life cycle of P. malaclemys is completed when terrapins ingest these cysts. At 12 sites along the coast of Georgia (U.S.A.), we determined the prevalence of internal P. malaclemys larvae in mud snails (proportion of infected snails in a population) and the prevalence and mean abundance of external trematode cysts. We examined whether these data were correlated with terrapin abundance, which we estimated with mark‐recapture methods. The abundance of external cysts and salinity explained ≥59% of the variability in terrapin abundance. We suggest that dependent linkages between the life stages of multihost parasites make them reliable predictors of host species’ abundance, including hosts with abundances that are challenging to quantify directly.  相似文献

Coralliophila abbreviata (Lamarck) is a corallivorous gastropod that lives and feeds on several species of scleractinian coral in the Western Atlantic and Caribbean. Previous studies of C. abbreviata have revealed that snails on branching acroporid corals are larger and consume more tissue than those on massive and plating corals. To ascertain whether snail life-history and fitness are differentially affected by the coral host, an analysis of the age structure and female reproductive output of snail populations on three coral host taxa (Acropora palmata, Diploria spp., and Montastraea spp.) was conducted at four shallow (2–7 m depth) reef sites off Key Largo, Florida in June through August, 2004. Snails were, on average, almost twice as large on A. palmata than on Diploria spp. and Montastraea spp., averaging 30.3 mm shell length, compared to 17.2 and 17.6 mm, respectively. Brood size increased as a power function with female shell length. Females on A. palmata were significantly larger than females on the other two hosts and, therefore, produced more offspring per female. The number of growth striae on the inner surface of the operculum was used to estimate snail age. Estimates of growth rate were obtained by fitting the Gompertz growth function to size-at-age plots and mortality was estimated using growth parameters and size-frequency data. The data suggest that C. abbreviata inhabiting A. palmata are larger than on alternative hosts due to a combination of a faster growth rate and longer life-span. The species is believed to be a protandrous hermaphrodite. The timing of sex change varied among hosts; snails on A. palmata changed sex later at larger sizes relative to those on the other two hosts. Based on these results, it seems probable that C. abbreviata has developed reaction norms for life-history traits, allowing snails to adjust and maximize fitness in the different environments associated with various coral hosts.  相似文献

The external morphology of 5 species of salariin Blenniidae has been examined. Differences have been established between Salarias fasciatus living in the sublittoral, Antennablennius hypenetes, Istiblennius edentulus and I. flaviumbrinus inhabiting the eulittoral zone, and, especially, Alticus kirkii living on steep rocks of the supralittoral zone. The rays of the anal and (partly) pectoral fins terminate in little hooks; these are most pronounced in A. kirkii and least developed in S. jasciatus. The pelvic fins are short and broad in A. kirkii, but long and slender in the other 4 species. These structures make it possible to cling to uneven substrates. Fins are protected from rough rocks by a well developed cuticula; this is thickest in A. kirkii. Respiratory organs, adapted to function on land, have been discovered in the form of cutaneous blood vessels on the heads and the bodies of A. kirkii, and (less numerous and less developed) in I. edentulus and I. flaviumbrinus. Sensory organs have become specialized in A. kirkii; the eyes protude from the head, and the lateral line is reduced to a small relict. S. fasciatus and A. kirkii must be regarded as terminal representatives of a sequence of development which followed a trend toward the amphibian way of life.  相似文献

Effects of the predatory naticid snail Polinices duplicatus (Say) on species composition, diversity and density, of the infauna of intertidal sand-flats at Barnstable Harbor, Massachusetts, USA, were studied using field experiments. Responses of molluscs (prey of P. duplicatus) and nonmolluscs (nonprey) were considered separately to distinguish between the effects of feeding and sediment disturbance during foraging. The fauna of 0.25 m2 predator-exclusion cages, coarse-mesh cages, sieved areas, and controls was followed for 1 yr. Species associations within cages from which predators were excluded were denser, more diverse, and richer in molluscs than those in other treatments. Larger areas (3×3 m) of natural bottom were fenced and maintained as snail exclosures and enclosures during two feeding seasons. For both molluscs and nonmolluscs, diversity (H'), number of species, evenness (SD), and density all decreased with increasing snail density. Intense predation pressure on molluscs and selective feeding on thin-shelled bivalves, which were rare, removed individuals and species of molluscs from the community. Comparison of samples taken inside and outside trails made by snails showed that disturbance of the surface sediment layers by snails decreased the abundance of spionid polychaetes and total nonmolluscs. The sipunculan Phascolopsis gouldi and the bivalve Gemma gemma dominated the community in all experimental treatments and were little affected by the activity of Polinices duplicatus. Predation and disturbance by snails lowered community diversity by removing individuals of the less abundant species, and generally maintained population densities below the level where strong competition would occur.  相似文献

Many marine organisms inherently express the presence and function of a new defence mechanism, termed multixenobiotic resistance mechanism (MXRM) because of its similarity to multidrug resistance (MDR) found in tumor cell lines resistant to chemotherapeutic drugs. However, previously no information was available on a possible induction of the activity of MXRM in organisms living at polluted sites. The purpose of the present study was to demonstrate the inducibility of this defence mechanism in the marine snail Monodonta turbinata, an organism known to inhabit a wide range of environmental conditions existing along a pollution gradient. Specimens of M. turbinata used in the present study were collected from March 1993 through March 1994 near Rovinj, Croatia. The accumulation of generally labelled 3H-vincristine (3H-VCR) in the gills of snails living at an unpolluted site was 67% higher and very sensitive to verapamil, an inhibitor of P-glycoprotein activity in comparison to snails living at a polluted site. The accumulation of vincristine (VCR) in snails from a polluted site was reduced and insensitive to verapamil due to the induced state of P-glycoprotein, as was demonstrated immunochemically by the enhanced concentration of a 140 kDa protein cross-reacting with the polyclonal antibodies raised against mammalian P-glycoprotein. MXRM could be induced in snails from the unpolluted site to the level found in snails living at a polluted site either by transplantation for 3 d to a polluted site, or by exposure for 3 d to sea water polluted with Diesel-2 oil (hydrocarbon concentration equivalent to 50 ppb of Kuwait oil). Discovery of the inducibility of this new defence mechanism in aquatic organisms may have important implications in ecotoxicology, as was demonstrated by a 104% enhanced accumulation of VCR in the presence of the MXRM-inhibitor, the so-called chemosensitizer. Besides, a striking difference in the levels of MXRM-elements (the sensitivity of the accumulation rate of xenobiotics to verapamil, immunochemical expression of P-glycoprotein, and the sensitivity of the binding of xenobiotics on membrane vesicles to verapamil) found between specimens living at the polluted and unpolluted sites offers a new molecular biomarker for exposure to pollutants.  相似文献

Oxygen levels were monitored within the mantle cavities of three barnacle species ( Chthamalus stellatus, Semibalanus balanoides, Elminius modestus), using optode microsensors. Conditions were always hypoxic, even when barnacles were actively using the prosoma and cirri to pump aerated seawater into the mantle cavity. Mantle fluid oxygen concentrations were extremely variable; behaviour and oxygen concentrations were not closely coupled. Ventilation of the mantle cavity depended partially on external water flow, with higher and more stable mantle fluid oxygen concentrations being sustained when the water around barnacles was agitated. During emersion, barnacles initially pumped seawater between the mantle cavity and the cone above the opercular plates to achieve ventilation. As water was lost it was replaced by air bubbles, eventually resulting in an air-filled mantle cavity. In S. balanoides and E. modestus, once the mantle cavity was filled with air, the barnacle usually used up the oxygen within the bubble within 2–3 h and did not regain oxic conditions until the barnacle was reimmersed in seawater. In C. stellatus, the air bubble was repeatedly refreshed for many hours by pneumostome formation. In response to low environmental salinity, all three species closed the opercular plates firmly and rapidly used up oxygen within the mantle fluid.  相似文献

Radionuclide labeled sodium bicarbonate and glucose were used to measure the rates of primary production and glucose uptake by Nitzschia obtusa var. undulata and Cymbella pusilla. The presence of glucose in the medium enhanced primary production in both diatom species. Uptake of glucose in C. pusilla was photoinhibited. A maximum of 9.3 nmol C mg dry wt-1 h-1 of glucose was taken up in the light without the presence of NaHCO3 in the medium and with NaHCO3 present the value was 18 nmol C mg dry wt-1 h-1. The ratio of inorganic carbon fixed to the total carbon budget (autotrophy and heterotrophy) was 0.51 for N. obtusa var. undulata and 0.62 for C. pusilla.  相似文献

Many eurythermal organisms alter composition of their membranes to counter perturbing effects of environmental temperature variation on membrane fluidity, a process known as homeoviscous adaptation. Marine intertidal gastropods experience uniquely large thermal excursions that challenge the functional integrity of their membranes on tidal and seasonal timescales. This study measured and compared membrane fluidity in marine intertidal snail species under three scenarios: (1) laboratory thermal acclimation, (2) thermal acclimatization during a hot midday low tide, and (3) thermal acclimatization across the vertical intertidal zone gradient in temperature. For each scenario, we used fluorescence polarization of the membrane probe DPH to measure membrane fluidity in individual samples of gill and mantle tissue. A four-week thermal acclimation of Tegula funebralis to 5, 15, and 25°C did not induce differences in membrane fluidity. Littorina keenae sampled from two thermal microhabitats at the beginning and end of a hot midday low tide exhibited no significant differences in membrane fluidity, either as a function of time of day or as a function of thermal microhabitat, despite changes in body temperature up to 24°C within 8 h. Membrane fluidities of a diverse group of snails collected from high, middle, and low vertical regions of the intertidal zone varied among species but did not correlate with thermal microhabitat. Our data suggest intertidal gastropod snails do not exhibit homeoviscous adaptation of gill and mantle membranes. We discuss possible alternatives for how these organisms counter thermal excursions characteristic of the marine intertidal zone.  相似文献
