The leaching behavior of chromium was studied using batch leaching tests, surface complexation modeling and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. A contaminated soil sample containing 1330 mg-Cr kg(-1) and 25600 mg-Fe kg(-1) of dry soil was stabilized/solidified (S/S) with 10% cement, 25% cement, 10% lime and a mixture of 20% flyash and 5% lime. The XANES analysis showed that Cr(III) was the only Cr species in untreated soil and S/S-treated samples. The leachate Cr concentration determined using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) was reduced from 5.18 mg l(-1) for untreated soil to 0.84 mg l(-1) for the sample treated with 25% cement. The Cr leachability in untreated and treated soil samples decreased dramatically as the pH increased from 3 to 5, remained at similar levels in the pH range between 5 and 10.5, and further decreased at pH>10.5. Modeling results indicated that the release of Cr(III) was controlled by adsorption on iron oxides at pH<10.5, and by precipitation of Ca(2)Cr(2)O(5).6H(2)O at pH>10.5.  相似文献

Leaching experiments from fly ash and soil with fire-extinguishing water result in significant amounts of PCDD/F in the related leachates. In contrast to the water solubilities the higher chlorinated congeners are leached more easily than the low chlorinated tetra- and penta-congeners. Obviously, the cosolvents present in the fire-extinguishing water enhances PCDD/F solubilities.  相似文献

Alkali borosilicate glass by fly ash from a coal-fired power plant   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Park JS  Taniguchi S  Park YJ 《Chemosphere》2009,74(2):320-324
The possibility of using coal fly ash as a silica source for alkali borosilicate glass was investigated. Alkali borosilicate glasses were prepared from the coal fly ash mixed with 30 wt.% reagents composed of Na(2)O and B(2)O(3) by susceptor-induction heating. Their densities ranged from 2.24 to 2.55 g cm(-3) and decreased as the amount of B(2)O(3) addition increased. However, the Vickers microhardness showed a different tendency with the density since the glass network connectivity improved by boron anomaly, which was identified by a nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The Vickers microhardness of the glass product, with the addition of 15 wt.% B(2)O(3) and 15 wt.% Na(2)O, was about 4030 MPa. Furthermore, the changes in microstructure were consistent with those in the chemical stability by the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP).  相似文献

The coal-fired electric utility generation industry has been identified as the largest anthropogenic source of mercury (Hg) emissions in the United States. One of the promising techniques for Hg removal from flue gas is activated carbon injection (ACI). The aim of this project was to liberate Hg bound to fly ash and activated carbon after ACI and provide high-quality coal combustion products for use in construction materials. Both bench- and pilot-scale tests were conducted to liberate Hg using a thermal desorption process. The results indicated that up to 90% of the Hg could be liberated from the fly ash or fly-ash-and-activated-carbon mixture using a pilot-scale apparatus (air slide) at 538 degrees C with a very short retention time (less than 1 min). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) evaluation indicated no significant change in fly ash carbon particle morphology following the thermal treatment. Fly ash particles collected in the baghouse of the pilot-scale apparatus were smaller in size than those collected at the exit of the air slide. A similar trend was observed in carbon particles separated from the fly ash using froth flotation. The results of this study suggest a means for power plants to reduce the level of Hg in coal-combustion products and potentially recycle activated carbon while maintaining the resale value of fly ash. This technology is in the process of being patented.  相似文献

The effect of thermal treatment of fly ash on the behaviour of PCDD/PCDF was studied in the range between 120 and 600° C. Annealing at 300° C (2 hrs) resulted in an increase of PCDD/PCDF concentration by a factor of 10 to 15. At 600° C degradation to concentrations below 0.1 ng/g is observed.  相似文献

Removal of PCBs from wastewater using fly ash   总被引:23,自引:0,他引:23
Liquids and sludges containing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can be treated to concentrate the PCBs in a solid residue. The latter can then be handled to destroy the PCBs. A study on sorption kinetics of PCBs on fly ash was conducted in controlled batch systems. TCB and HeCB are removed at 25 degrees C by adsorption on fly ash up to 97% at pH 7, with an adsorbent dose of 5 g/l. An examination of the thermodynamic parameters shows that the adsorption of TCB and HeCB by fly ash is a process occurring spontaneously at ambient conditions. Activation energies for the sorption process ranged between 5.6 and 49.1 kJ/mol. It was observed that the rate at which TCB and HeCB are adsorbed onto fly ash showed a diffusion limitation. The uptake rate of TCB and HeCB increases with increasing initial concentration and gradually tends to a constant value. A decrease in the adsorption of TCB and HeCB was observed when interfering ions and other PCB congeners were present. Changing the pH in the aqueous solution from 2 to 10 had no effect on the adsorption process. Overall, fly ash can be used for an efficient removal of PCBs from several aqueous solutions.  相似文献

This work investigated the possibilities of immobilizing incineration fly ash by applying different processing methods. Direct sintering of fly ash at 1050 degrees C produced material with increased resistance to leaching; however, the high content of halides prevented the achievement of appropriate strength. Fly ash melting and casting into metallic moulds resulted in the formation of glass with good chemical resistivity and mechanical properties, which were further improved by devitrification, and the formation of glass-ceramics. The most successful combination of strength and resistance to leaching was obtained by a process consisting of fly ash melting, by pouring the melt into water, then grinding, and sintering without additives at 850-950 degrees C. In this way, a material was produced that cannot only be landfilled as a stabilised and non-reactive waste in landfills for non-hazardous wastes, but can also be utilized as a valuable material for manufacturing useful products. This article provided valuable results for policy-makers in Slovenia, about the handling fly ash from incineration plants. Implications: Fly ash from an incineration plant was thermally treated using several processing routes. Ash-melting, by pouring the melt into water and sintering, produced glass-ceramics having an optimal combination of strength and resistance to leaching that can find applications as useful products. These results provide important data for policy makers in Slovenia regarding the building of incineration plants, and handling the solid-waste products, especially fly ash.  相似文献

The effect of fly ash on plant growth and yield of tomato   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
A gradual increase in fly ash concentrations in the normal field soil (0, 10, 20...100% volume/volume) increased the porosity, water holding capacity, pH, conductivity, C.E.C., sulphate, carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Cu, Zn and B. Fly ash additions to soil caused significant reductions in nitrogen content, it being almost nil in 90 and 100%. Tomato plants grown in the ash-soil mixture showed luxuriant growth with bigger and greener leaves. Plant growth, yield, (flowering, fruiting, fruit weight/plant, mean fruit weight), carotenoids and chlorophylls were mostly enhanced in the treatments with 40-80% fly ash, being optimal at 50 or 60%. From 60 or 70% onwards, the measured parameters tended to reduce. At 100% fly ash, yield (weight of fruits/plant) was considerably reduced. The boron content of tomato leaves displayed a gradual increase with fly ash addition from 20% onwards, while response of foliar nitrogen was just the opposite. The most economic level of fly ash incorporation was 40%, which improved the yield and market value of tomato fruits (mean weight) by 81 and 30%, respectively.  相似文献

Artificially contaminated (spiked) natural soils were solidified/stabilized using various combinations of commonly used additives, such as lime, cement, fly ash, activated carbon, and silica fume. The effectiveness of the solidification/stabilization (S/S) processes was evaluated based on experimental findings from compaction testing, unconfined compressive shear strength, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Correlations of limited reliability between unconfined compressive strength and penetrometer and torvane measurements were derived. Results from XRD experiments indicated that certain organic contaminants (i.e., naphthalene and pyrene) might impact the S/S processes for a given combination of additives. The type and amount of organic contaminants also affected the pozzolanic reactions. Specifically, the absence or small peak intensity of pozzolanic product XRD patterns for a given combination of additives was a good indication that the type and the amount of organic contaminant present inhibited pozzolanic reactions. This phenomenon was tested and confirmed for actual field-contaminated samples.  相似文献

To understand the fate of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in a fly ash treatment plant that used the Waelz rotary kiln process (hereafter the Waelz process), the samples of input and output media were collected and analyzed. The most important PCDD/F source in input mass was electric arc furnace (EAF) fly ash, which had a mean PCDD/F content of 18.51 ng/g and contributed more than 99% of PCDD/F input mass, whereas the PCDD/F input mass fractions contributed by the coke, sand, and ambient air were only 0.04%, 0.02%, and 0.000002%, respectively. For the PCDD/F output mass in the Waelz process, the major total PCDD/F contents of 43.73 and 10.78 ng/g were in bag-filter and cyclone ashes, which accounted for approximately 69% and 17%, respectively, whereas those of stack flue gas and slag were 14% and 0.423%, respectively. The Waelz process has a dechlorination mechanism for higher chlorinated congeners, but it is difficult to decompose the aromatic rings of PCDD/Fs. Therefore, this resulted in the accumulation of lower chlorinated congeners. The output/input ratio of total PCDD/F mass and total PCDD/F international toxicity equivalence (I-TEQ) was 0.62 and 1.19, respectively. Thus, the Waelz process for the depletion effect of total PCDD/F mass was positive but minor, whereas the effect for total PCDD/F I-TEQ was adverse overall.  相似文献

Fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) has been characterized in terms of polychlorinated dibenzyl-p-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) content. Increasing values of PCDD/Fs have been found to correlate with decreasing temperatures of sampling points in flue gas treatment lines of the plants, confirming other researchers' findings about temperature as the major controlling parameter for the PCDD/F formation. Measured PCDD/F ratios show that de novo synthesis is the dominant formation mechanism. The increasing trends of particulate-bound PCDD/Fs can be explained not only through the dominant de novo synthesis process but also considering the adsorption of gaseous PCDD/Fs on fly ash deposits, even outside the typical de novo synthesis temperature ranges. The effective role of a post-combustor unit, imposed by Italian law to destroy PCDD/ Fs, also needs to be carefully reconsidered.  相似文献

Microbe-induced changes in metal extractability from fly ash   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Tiwari S  Kumari B  Singh SN 《Chemosphere》2008,71(7):1284-1294
A low cost and eco-friendly technology to bioremediate toxic metals associated with fly ash dumps that contaminate ground and surface water in and around fly ash settling ponds, was investigated. The impact of augmentation of fly ash tolerant bacterial strains, isolated from Typha latifolia growing naturally on fly ash dumps, was studied for metal extractability. It was observed that most of the bacterial strains either induced the bioavailability of Fe, Zn and Ni or immobilized Pb, Cr, Cu, Cd in the fly ash. However, there were few exceptions also. In case of Ni, eight strains enhanced metal mobility, while others caused metal immobilization. The findings also suggest that metal solublization and immobilization are specific to bacterial strains. While induced bioavailability of metals by bacteria may be used to accelerate the phytoextraction of metals from fly ash by hyper accumulator plants, immobilization of metals can check their migration to water reservoirs and reduce the human suffering in affected areas. Thus, bacteria serve the dual purpose and may result in the microbe- assisted phytoremediation of contaminated sites.  相似文献

Fly ash is a particulate substance containing metal oxides, carbon and other microelements. In this study, fly ashes with different quantities of carbon and minerals prepared by a thermal process in the laboratory were used as adsorbents to investigate the contribution of precipitation and adsorption to the removal of aqueous Cu(II). Experimental results showed that the specific surface area of fly ash increased linearly with the quantity of carbon. The specific surface areas of the carbon and mineral fraction were 60 m2/g and 0.68 m2/g, respectively. The specific adsorption capacities of carbon ranged from 2.2 to 2.8 mg Cu/g carbon, while those for mineral were only about 0.63 to approximately 0.81 mg Cu/g mineral. Consequently, the carbon fraction in fly ash was important in the removal of Cu(II) at pH 5. However, Cu(II) removal owing to precipitation increases with a decreasing carbon fraction and the contribution of copper precipitation was estimated to be approximately 23% to approximately 82% of total removal, depending on the carbon fraction of fly ash.  相似文献

Treatment of tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (T4CDD) on municipal incinerator fly ash at 30 to 150°C for 10 minutes using 5% (Vol/Vol) NO2 in air resulted in production of nitro-T4CDD. Percent conversion was between 40% at 50°C to 100% at 150°C. Nitro-T4CDD produced in the laboratory was unstable in hexane/methanol or hexane/acetone solutions and decomposed at ?5°C with half-lives of 8–10 days?1 to the original T4CDD.Fly ash from a municipal incinerator in Toronto, Ontario was extracted using toluene/methanol for 12 hrs in a Soxhlet extractor. Condensate of this extract was analyzed using capillary gas chromatography with flame ionization, nitrogen-selective, and mass spectrometric detectors. Retention times for nitro-T4CDD, multi-ion selected ion monitoring, and nitrogen detector response were used as supporting evidence for the presence of nitro-chlorinated dioxins as naturally occurring in this sample.  相似文献

Microbial respiration within a Fox sandy loam and a Blount silt loam was assessed after addition of acidic (pH 3.5) and alkaline (pH 12.2) fly ash (FoxAC, BlountAC, FoxAK and BlountAK, respectively). At the 20% alkaline ash rate, respiration was completely inhibited in the FoxAK and reduced by 97% in the BlountAK. In contrast, the 20% acidic ash rate reduced respiration in the FoxAC by 28% and in the BlountAC by 33%. Co-application of 5% composted sewage sludge to the ash-soil mixtures (FoxSSAC, BlountSSAC, FoxSSAK and BlountSSAK, respectively) improved respiration in both soils except for the 20% alkaline ash rate. Soil electrical conductivity, and concentrations of B, Mo, exchangeable Al and soluble anions were not closely associated with inhibition of respiration. In contrast, high pH appeared associated with decrease in respiration. Ecological Dose 50% (EcD(50)) values of the sewage-amended treatments were greater than for those of the non-sludge treatments for each sampling date as a result of the ameliorating properties of the sludge.  相似文献

The removal of triphenyltin chloride from contaminated simulated seawater with adsorption method was discussed. The adsorbents used are fly ash, nSiO2, and nSiO2/fly ash composite. The results showed that the adsorption of the adsorbents increases with increase in the adsorbent dose, contact time, pH, stirring speed, initial TPT concentration, and decreased with increase in temperature. The adsorption fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm, showing that the adsorbent and TPT combined with function groups and the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters were also evaluated. Optimal conditions for the adsorption of TPT from simulated seawater were applied to TPT removal from natural seawater. A higher removal efficiency of TPT (>99 %) was obtained for the nSiO2/fly ash composite but not for fly ash and nSiO2.  相似文献

Over the past decades in China, the number of medical waste incinerators (MWIs) has been rising rapidly, causing emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). In this study, samples of fly ash, ash deposits, and bottom ash from typical MWIs were analyzed for PCDD/Fs and their distribution characteristics. Results showed international toxic equivalent (I-TEQ) values in the range of 6.9–67 ng I-TEQ/g in fly ash and ash deposits, whereas the concentration in bottom ash was extremely low (only 1.33 pg I-TEQ/g), yet the generation of PCDD/Fs was mostly de novo synthesis in fly ash and ash deposits according to the ratio of PCDFs to PCDDs; the major distribution differences of PCDD/Fs in fly ash was manifested by the content of toxic furan 2,3,7,8-TCDF, but other toxic PCDD/Fs showed similar distribution. Other findings are that 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF had the most contribution to TEQ concentration, and that the most abundant toxic furan congener is 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF. Correlation analysis showed that there was no significant correlation between PCDD/Fs concentration and several other physical and chemical parameters.

Implications: This paper is of interest because it presents the emission performances of PCDD/Fs in ash from medical waste incineration in China. PCDD/F contents in fly ash and ash deposits vary between 6.9 and 67.3 ng I-TEQ/g. However, the concentration in bottom ash was extremely low (only 1.33?×?10?3 ng I-TEQ/g). The fingerprints of PCDD/Fs in fly ash are almost similar, except for 2,3,7,8-TCDF. There is no marked correlation between PCDD/Fs and other physicochemical properties.
