This study deals with meiofauna associated with a sublittoral population of the kelp Laminaria ochroleuca located on the northern coast of Spain. By sampling once a year over a 4-year period, we examined patterns of faunal distribution as a function of some environmental factors at the meso-scale level (depth, and exposure to waves and surge). We also examined the relationship between L. ochroleuca abundance (as dry weight biomass and number of plants per sampling quadrat) and abundance and diversity of meiofauna. Finally, we investigated patterns of within-plant distribution (algal frond vs. algal holdfast), using also the meiofauna of the adjacent bottom as a referent to estimate the level of "phytal dependence" of the meiofauna collected on L. ochroleuca. We found that the bulk of permanent meiofauna consisted of nematodes, copepods, mites, polychaetes, tanaids and ostracods, with copepods being predominant on the fronds of the alga and nematodes in the holdfasts. The temporary meiofauna consisted of juvenile amphipods, bivalves and gastropods, together with barnacle nauplii and cyprids. Abundance and major composition of meiofaunal taxa were unrelated to both depth and hydrodynamic exposure of the sampling quadrats. However, we detected significant qualitative and quantitative faunal differences as a function of microhabitat. All meiofaunal groups were more abundant in holdfast samples than in frond and bottom samples. The gross taxonomic composition of meiofauna in bottom samples was similar to that in holdfast samples, but substantially different from that of meiofauna associated with the fronds. The L. ochroleuca holdfasts, in which dense aggregations of meiofauna can occur, appear to function as ecotone between phytal and rocky-bottom microhabitats. All together, our results suggest that the distribution of meiofauna within the Laminaria bed is mostly affected by factors operating at the microhabitat level rather than the meso-scale level.Communicated by L. In the Western Mediterranean Sea, the gorgonian Eunicella singularis (Esper, 1794) is found at high densities on sublittoral bottoms at depths from 10 to 70 m. Shallow colonies have symbiotic zooxanthellae that deeper colonies lack. While knowledge of the ecology of the shallow populations has increased during the last decades, there is almost no information on the ecology of the deep sublittoral populations. In October and November 2004 at Cap de Creus (42°19′12″ N; 03°19′34″ E), an analysis of video transects made by a remotely operated vehicle showed that shallow populations (10–25 m depth) were dominated by small, non-reproductive colonies, while deep sublittoral populations (50–67 m depth) were dominated by medium-sized colonies. Average and maximum colony heights were greater in the deeper populations, with these deeper populations also forming larger patch sizes and more extensive regions of continuous substrate coverage. These results suggest that shallow habitats are suitable for E. singularis, as shown by the high recruitment rate, but perturbations may limit or delay the development of these populations into a mature stage. This contrasts with the deep sublittoral habitats where higher environmental stability may allow the development of mature populations dominated by larger, sexually mature colonies.  相似文献

Paramuricea clavata (Risso, 1826) and Eunicella singularis (Esper, 1794) are the most representative gorgonian species in hard bottoms sublittoral communities in the Western Mediterranean Sea. Reproductive cycles of two populations of both species were studied in two distinct locations approximately 600 km apart (Medes Islands and Cape of Palos), in order to assess interpopulation variability on a relevant geographic scale. Seasonal variation of lipid concentration levels in the gorgonian tissue was used as a tool to quantify energy storage by each studied population in order to explain possible interpopulation differences in gonadal output. Sex ratio in Medes Islands populations of both species was 1:1, while in Cape of Palos sex ratio was significantly male biased (1:7) in P. clavata, and female biased (1.7:1) in E. singularis populations. Spawning timing occurred in all cases coinciding with a marked increase in sea-water temperature in spring, and after the most successful feeding season, but comparing localities there was a clear temporal shift in the time of gametes release, appearing well linked to the shift in sea-water temperature rising in spring in both sites at the depth where populations are placed. Therefore, in this study the temperature appears as the main synchronizing factor of gonadal development within these populations. Significant differences in gonadal volume per polyp were found in both species owing mainly to differences in the number of gonads per polyp between populations, with Cape of Palos populations displaying higher values in both studied species, suggesting that the exposition to different local conditions may be reverted in a different gonadal output. But the observed patterns in lipid concentrations levels in gorgonians disable us to conclude that lipid concentration levels explain the observed differences in gonadal output found in this study.  相似文献

Quantitative sampling of littoral and sublittoral populations of Pisidia longicornis (L.) and a littoral population of Porcellana platycheles (Pennant) has been carried out over a 2 year period (1970/1972). On the shore, P. longicornis were most abundant at mean low water spring (MLWS), whereas P. platycheles were found mostly at lower mid-shore level. Differences were found between littoral and sublittoral P. longicornis. Sublittoral females are gravid for a slightly shorter period (April to September), carry more eggs, and are smaller than littoral females. It is suggested that their lifespan may also be shorter than that of littoral individuals. Young of both species settle in autumn and grow until December, when growth ceases until the following spring. Numbers decline in the summer months due to the mortality of older individuals. Many sublittoral and some littoral P. longicornis are sexually mature towards the end of their first year on the shore, and may copulate after the early spring moult and carry eggs in the subsequent summer months. P. platycheles appear to follow a similar basic pattern, but results are less clear.  相似文献

Reproduction of Asterina stellifera was studied in two populations from the Cabo Frio region, southeastern Brazil. One was located in an intertidal seagrass flat at Japonês Island (1994–1995); the second was on a sublittoral rocky shore at Pontal beaches (1999–2000). Reproductive cycle was studied at monthly intervals by organ indices and histological examinations of gonads. Although these two populations were studied in different habitats and at different times, the periodicity of the annual reproductive cycle was very similar for the two populations. The highest gonad index (GI) values were found in August/September (late winter), followed by a drop in GI values, indicating spawning. The GI and pyloric caeca index (PCI) tended to have an inverse relationship in both populations, but it was only statistically significant in the rocky-shore population. Gametogenesis in the two populations was described and roughly confirmed the reproductive cycles determined by GIs. Published online: 9 August 2002  相似文献

Most of the current knowledge on Mediterranean gorgonians is restricted to investigations of those populations found within shallow sublittoral waters, and only limited data are available for populations located below scuba depth. To overcome this lack of information, the occurrence and abundance of the gorgonians Eunicella singularis, Paramuricea clavata, and Leptogorgia sarmentosa were investigated in northwestern Mediterranean benthic communities over a wide geographical (60 km of coastline) and bathymetrical (0–70 m deep) extent using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The greatest occurrence and abundances of E. singularis and P. clavata were concentrated in areas that are directly exposed to strong near-bottom currents. E. singularis was the most common and abundant species and displayed great plasticity and amplitude in its environmental preferences. Conversely, P. clavata showed a very patchy distribution that was associated with vertical rocky walls. Only isolated colonies of L. sarmentosa were observed in the study area. Hot spots of abundance of E. singularis and P. clavata were identified below a depth of 40 m, which demonstrates the importance of studying the distribution of benthic species over a wide geographical and bathymetrical extent.  相似文献

Morphological variation and vertical distribution of Fucus vesiculosus were quantified at several sites in the Finnish archipelago (Baltic Sea). F. vesiculosus samples were obtained from skerries at geographical distances of 1 km or more (large scale) and at intervals of ca 100 m around a single island (small scale). The results were examined in relation to wave exposure, calculated by Baardseth and effective fetch cartographic methods. Despite the fact that the exposure indices were calculated differently they correlated strongly. Vegetative morphological characteristics of F. vesiculosus illustrate the morphological differences both within and between exposure gradients. The tallest and widest F. vesiculosus plants were found at the sheltered end of the large-scale exposure gradient. Those from equally sheltered sites of the island were smaller in all respects. Thus, the trend from small narrow plants to large wide sheltered plants was expressed differently over the different geographical scales. Consequently localities with similar exposure indices may have morphologically different F. vesiculosus populations. Shores with similar cartographic exposure indices can be different in nature. Underwater topography and shore locations, either close to the mainland or at the outermost sites of the archipelago, affect the exposure. Although a sheltered shore is indicated, the sublittoral zone may be quite exposed to the movements of water. In contrast, in an open shore environment underwater rocks, boulders and shallow water areas can provide sheltered habitats. The depth range of the F. vesiculosus belt exhibited two distinctive patterns. At sheltered sites, around islands in the outermost reaches of the archipelago F. vesiculosus can grow to a maximum depth of 5 m. In exposed habitats the belt becomes narrower, reaching a maximum depth of 3 m. Closer to the mainland F. vesiculosus is found at exposed sites to a maximum depth of 5 m; the depth range at sheltered sites is narrower, only reaching depths of 2 m or less. In conclusion, the changes in plant morphology and in the vertical belt distribution are similar to each other along both gradients at the exposed ends of the wave action spectrum; however, the two gradients diverge at the sheltered ends of the spectrum. A distinctive morph ofActinia equina (L.) is found at low frequency among populations on intertidal hard substrata on some shores on the Isle of Man. This morph is red with rows of green oval spots or elongate markings running longitudinally down the column. Starch gel electrophoresis of 21 allozyme loci was used to compare samples of this morph from two localities with other sympatricActinia spp. Collections were made in early summer 1986. For one sampling site the comparison was with redA. equina and greenA. prasina Gosse, whilst at the other site with redA. equina only. At both sites significant genetic differences in allele frequencies at several loci were found between the new morph and sympatricA. equina andA. prasina. The results also confirm the reproductive isolation ofA. prasina. As with much previous work on sea anemones, levels of mean heterozygosity per locus (H) were found to be high (H=0.157 to 0.342). A surprising feature of the results, although bearing out earlier unpublished data, is that high levels of genetic differentiation are found between populations of what appear to be the same morphs collected from shores only a few km apart. Among theActinia spp. studied, differentiation between populations of the same morph on different shores was of the same order as between sympatric, reproductively isolated populations.  相似文献

In the period September 1986 to August 1987 fish were captured once a month, using an otter trawl, from the intertidal and subtidal regions of Sulaibikhat Bay, Kuwait. Correlation analysis revealed that numbers were not directly related to temperature at the time of sampling. The recruitment of large numbers of young of the year Liza carinata (Valenciennes) during March was related to low temperatures in November, the probable time of spawning of this species. Salinity at the time of sampling was inversely correlated with numbers. This result indicates that large numbers of 0+fish recruit to the Bay during the period of maximum fresh water outflow through the Shatt-al-Arab. Numbers of fish were significantly greater in the intertidal region, where they were present almost entirely as 0 group fish, than in the subtidal. The three dominant species of the assemblage are shown to use the two depth intervals in differnt ways. L. carinata was capture a almost exclusively in the intertidal region as 0+ fish. Pomadasys stridens (Forsskål) was captured as 0+ fish in both the intertidal and subtidal regions but in greater numbers in the intertidal region. Leiognathus brevirostris (Valenciennes) was captured as small, mostly 0+ individuals in the intertidal region and as larger fish in the subtidal region. The use made by the smaller fish of the intertidal region is related to the avoidance of sublittoral predators and reduction of intraspecific competition, whilst larger fish in the sublittoral region may be avoiding predation by piscivorous birds.  相似文献

Growth as an integrative parameter of all physiological processes was measured in young sporophytes of temperate Laminaria digitata, Laminaria saccharina and Laminaria hyperborea exposed in the laboratory to irradiance consisting of either only photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) or to a spectrum including ultraviolet radiation (UVR) (PAR+UVA+UVB) by use of cut-off glass filters. Size increment was measured every 10 min over a period of 18–21 days using growth chambers with on-line video measuring technique. In the chamber, plants were grown at 10±2°C and 16:8 h light–dark cycles with 6 h additional UVR exposure in the middle of the light period. Tissue morphology and absorption spectra were measured in untreated young sporophytes while chlorophyll a content and DNA damage were measured in treated thalli at the end of the experiment. Sensitivity of growth under UVR was found to be related to the observed upper depth distribution limit of the upper sublittoral L. digitata, upper to mid sublittoral L. saccharina and lower sublittoral L. hyperborea. Tissue DNA damage is, however, dependent on thallus thickness which minimizes UVR effect where outer cell layers shade inner cells and provide longer pathlength for UVR. Exposure to UVR causes cellular, enzymatic and molecular damage. Presence of UV-absorbing compounds further reduces effective UVR from reaching physiological targets. The cost of producing higher amount of UV-absorbing compounds and effective DNA repair mechanism can, however, divert photosynthate at the expense of growth. Tissue chlorophyll a content was not significantly different between treatments suggesting a capacity for acclimation to moderate UVR fluence. Growth acclimation to repeated UVR exposure was observed within a period of 12 days while growth inhibition was observed after a longer UVR exposure period of 21 days. The results give further insight into the effects of UVR on the cellular level and show how ecological parameters such as the upper depth distribution limit are dependent on cellular processes.  相似文献

Standing crop values of Laminaria species sampled between 0 to 2 m depth in the sublittoral of Helgoland, a small rocky island in the southern North Sea, are similar to those reported by other workers from Norwegian or Scottish coasts. Below 2 m water depth, however, standing crop values are found to be reduced to a far greater extent with increasing depth than in the Norwegian or Scottish areas studied. Maximum standing crop values are not found in Laminaria digitata and L. saccharina growing just below the low water mark of spring tides, but in the upper L. hyperborea forest at 2 m depth. Population density and leaf area index (LAI) decrease with increasing depth (but not the average weight of individuals constituting the L. hyperborea forest). It is suggested that the depth at which LAI becomes 1 represents an important ecological threshold, since growth rates of L. hyperborea specimens appear to decrease at greater depths but not to increase above the threshold. Self-shading might equalize, to a certain extent, the quantity of underwater irradiance available to an individual phylloid at all depths at which a close vegetation of Laminaria species occurs.  相似文献

The importance of Euphausia pacifica Hansen to the demersal fish community off Sendai Bay, northern Japan, was studied based on a total of 256 trawl samples collected during May, October and November, from 1989 to 1992. The samples were classified into 16 assemblages according to year, month and depth. The importance of E. pacifica to the total diet of each of the assemblages was measured using an index considering both fish diet and species composition. A total of 24 fish species out of 87 were found to ingest E. pacifica. Of these, Gadus macrocephaus and Theragra chalcogramma had the highest predation impact due to their dominance in the fish assemblages and the high proportion of E. pacifica in their diets. The contribution of E. pacifica to the total diet of the fish assemblage was highest in the shallow (≤300 m) regions during May, accounting for an average of 38.5% for the 4 years. However, during May 1990, when the warm Kuroshio Extension prevailed, the contribution was higher in the deep (>300 m; 22.6%) region, reflecting active and/or passive movements of E. pacifica. The average predation impact was maximal in the May/shallow assemblage (mean ± SE; 4.6 ± 1.4 kg wet wt km2 d−1) and was minimal in the November/shallow assemblage (0.4 ± 0.3). Annual estimates of consumption by demersal fish fishes ranged from 43 to 128 metric tons, representing 15 to 64% of the annual commercial catch of E. pacifica by local fisheries. It is therefore suggested that the fisheries on E. pacifica have the potential to considerably impact the demersal fish assemblages. Received: 3 December 1997 / Accepted: 10 June 1998  相似文献

Heterozygosity and growth in transplanted mussels   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Growth comparisons were made involving mussels (Mytilus spp.) collected from five different localities in Britain in 1980–1981. Two of the localities, Mumbles, South Wales, and Bude, Southwest England, have pure populations of M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis, respectively. The other three, Whitsand Bay, Southwest England, Croyde Bay, Southwest England and Robin Hood's Bay, Northeast England, have hybrid populations with both M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis ancestry. To make growth comparisons, mussels from different populations were mixed in oyster nets and transplanted to three different localities. After periods of transplantation varying between several months and one year, growth was assessed by measuring increase in shell length or dry body weight. Starch-gel electrophoresis was used to assay variation in the transplanted mussels at three allozyme loci partially diagnostic for M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis. The results provide evidence of small growth differences between populations and between allozyme genotypes within populations. These differences accounted for no more than a few percent of the total variation in growth between mussels. Statistically significant results were obtained, but were frequently found not to be reproducible. There is no clear evidence of a growth difference between M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Allozyme heterozygotes appear to have growth rates intermediate between allozyme homozygotes; this study thus fails to provide evidence for overdominance with respect to growth rate.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation and genetic variability of sporophytic and gametophytic populations of Gelidium arbuscula (Bory) from three localities sampled in 1989 and 1990 in the Canary Islands (Spain) were examined by isozyme electrophoresis. Twenty-three to 29 putative alleles corresponding to 22 gene loci, were compared. High deviations in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and significant differences between allelic frequencies of sporophytic and gametophytic subpopulations at the same locality were found, suggesting a predominant asexual reproduction of G. arbuscula. The genetic variability (percentage of polymorphic loci, mean number of alleles per locus and average gene diversity) of haploid subpopulations was lower than that of diploid subpopulations at all three localities, being the lowest described for seaweeds. No correlation between genetic and geographical distance was found. The high genetic differentiation coefficient between all subpopulations suggests a very reduced genetic flow between subpopulations of the same and of different localities. These results suggest that the genetic structure of the populations of G. arbuscula from the Canary Islands is due to a founder-effect combined with a predominance of asexual reproduction. This is the first report comparing allelic frequencies between sporophytic and gametophytic subpopulations of seaweeds.  相似文献

Many sponge species are considered to be cosmopolitan. However, the systematics of marine sponges are very difficult because of the paucity of taxonomically useful characters, and hence the apparently cosmopolitan nature of many species may be simply a consequence of this. In this paper, geographically distant populations of two pairs of cosmopolitan calcareous sponges of the genusClathrina were compared genetically.C. clathrus andC. cerebrum were collected by SCUBA diving between January and March 1989 from two localities: the Mediterranean Sea at La Vesse, near Marseille, Frances, at 9 to 12 m depth, and from the South West Atlantic at Arraial do Cabo, about 200 km east of Rio de Janeiro, at 2 to 10 m depth. Very high levels of gene divergence were found between the allegedly conspecific populations. The levels of genetic identity,I, observed are so low (I=0.128 and 0.287) that the populations clearly cannot be considered conspecific. New species names ofC. aurea sp. nov. andC. brasiliensis sp. nov. are therefore assigned to the southwest Atlantic counterparts ofC. clathrus andC. cerebrum, respectively. It is concluded that, at least for the species studied, and probably for many other species in taxonomically difficult groups, the actual distributions of single species may be far more geographically restricted than is generally assumed.  相似文献

The high-energy windward coasts with narrow rocky intertidal regions (Oistens, River Bay) at Barbados, West Indies, had abundant macroscopic algae (mainly Sargassum sp.) and populations of Holothuria glaberrima Selenka and Echinometra lucunter (Linnaeus), while protected ones with a wide rocky intertidal had sparse macroscopic algae and populations of E. lucunter only. The low-energy leeward coasts with wide rocky intertidal regions (Six Men's Bay, Payne's Bay) had no macroscopic algae in the surf zone and populations of E. lucunter only. Numerical densities of E. lucunter were high in all localities; the highest level of 144 m-2 was found at Six Men's Bay; numerical densities of H. glaberrima were high at both Oistens and River Bay, the highest level of 36 m-2 being recorded at River Bay. The caloric density of H. glaberrima at River Bay was 412 kcal m-2. The highest combined density of H. glaberrima and E. lucunter was at Oistens (632 kcal m-2, with 254 kcal m-2 being due to E. lucunter). The highest caloric density of E. lucunter at Six Men's Bay was 482 kcal m-2. Dependence on suspended food probably restricts H. glaberrima to high-energy environments while E. lucunter has an additional food source through its ability to scrape the rock substratum. E. lucunter may be more efficient in catching drift food. Mortality is suggested to be the basis of the failure of E. lucunter to displace H. glaberrima from the high-energy location.  相似文献

This study describes spatial and temporal patterns of variability in population parameters in the barnacle Chthamalus montagui Southward in three localities of northern Spain and evaluates whether density-dependent settlement may regulate population dynamics. The sampling design considered two spatial scales, localities and sites within localities, and two temporal scales, years and six month intervals. Density, amount of free space, mortality, growth rate and magnitude of settlement (both absolute and per unit of free space) were obtained from photographs of permanent quadrats and from direct counts in the field. The number of settlers in scraped and untouched quadrats was used to estimate the importance of the presence of conspecifics in settlement. Significant variation at the two spatial and temporal scales was found for most parameters. Large spatial and temporal variations in adult mortality rate, density, and settlement were observed. Patterns of mortality were not consistent with differences in density among localities. Differences in settlement among localities were maintained through time. We suggest that magnitude of settlement is regulated by persistent features such as topography or local water circulation. We assume that early post-settlement mortality does not differ among localities. In the absence of differential mortality, settlement determines average population density within localities. Within localities, settlement was independent of density and free space. No consistent evidence was found on preferential settlement at the vicinity of conspecifics. The main conclusion is that density-dependent settlement is not relevant for the regulation of the populations of C. montagui in the northern Spain. Regulation might occur by density-dependent processes within the adult fraction of the population and/or the larval phase before settlement.  相似文献

Along the Northumberland coast, Zirphaea crispata (Linné) occurs in soft shales from approximately 1 ft (0.2 m) above datum to at least 20 fathoms (37 m). It also occurs sublittorally in dumped power station fly ash wastes. The populations are polymodal. Growth rate is estimated at approximately 8 mm a year with a life span of approximately 5 years in the case of those found intertidally and 6 to 7 years in the case of the sublittoral populations. Although breeding occurs from March to October, there is evidence that there are two main breeding peaks, one from March to May and the other from August to October. Differences in shell shape between different populations can probably be explained by the differences in effort required to drill into the substratum.  相似文献

The estuary Byfjord (Sweden) is characterized by high primary production, a well developed meiofauna compared to the macrofauna, high epifaunal biomass, a low number of herbivorous copepods and a small fish stock. A simplified energy flow model of the ecosystem of the fjord is given. The energy transfer is approximated to 15%. About one-fourth-300 (metric) tons of carbon — of the annual primary production is suggested to be directly consumed and to produce 5 tons of zooplankton carbon and 40 tons of epifaunal (mainly Mytilus edulis) carbon. About 500 tons of carbon from the detritus pool are probably utilized in animal production. This amount will produce 5 tons of zooplankton carbon, 6 tons of meiofaunal carbon, and 3 tons of carbon from the benthic macrofauna. Production of fish is estimated at 0.3 ton carbon per year. M. edulis seems to be the only food resource in the fjord worth harvesting by man.  相似文献

The population genetic structure of the neon damselfish (Pomacentrus coelestis) in the northwestern Pacific Ocean was revealed by the hypervariable control region of the mitochondrial gene (343 bp). In total, 170 individuals were sampled from 8 localities distributed between Taiwan and Japan, and 71 haplotypes were obtained through sequence alignment. High haplotype diversity (= 0.956 ± 0.008) with low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.010 ± 0.006) was observed, and the results of the mismatch distribution test suggested that a historical population expansion after a period of population bottleneck might have occurred among P. coelestis populations. Based on the results of the UPGMA tree and AMOVA (Φct = 0.193, < 0.05) analyses, fish populations from eight localities could be divided into two groups: one includes populations from localities around mainland Japan, and the other includes those from Okinawa and southern Taiwan. A genetic break was found between populations from mainland Japan and Okinawa, and this break was congruent with the pattern of phenotypic variations documented in previous studies. This evidence supports the latitudinal variation of reproductive traits among P. coelestis populations likely being genetically based. It is suggested that the changes in sea level and sea surface temperatures during past glaciations might have resulted in population bottlenecks in P. coelestis and the modern populations in the northern West Pacific are likely the results of recolonization after such events. The Kuroshio Current acts not only as a vehicle for larval transport along its pathway (between populations in southern Taiwan and Okinawa) but also as a barrier for larval dispersal across the Kuroshio axis (between populations in mainland Japan and Okinawa).
