Francis (1979) proposed that clonal and solitary forms of the anemone Anthopleura elegantissima are actually two species. In 1984 and 1985, samples from two to six California populations of all known forms and species of California Anthopleura were analyzed electrophoretically to determine their taxonomic relationships. Data from 14 enzymes and 18 loci, 17 of them polymorphic, show that the two forms of A. elegantissima are virtually identical electrophoretically, and there is no evidence of reduced gene flow between them. We conclude there are three species of Anthopleura in California: A. elegantissima (Brandt, 1835), A. xanthogrammica (Brandt, 1835) and A. artemisia (Dana, 1848). Genetic variation in the two species capable of asexual reproduction, A. elegantissima and A. artemisia, is extremely high, approximately 2.5 times that of the strictly sexual A. xanthogrammica.  相似文献

The mudsnail taxon Hydrobia s.l. plays a major role in numerous ecological and parasitological studies. Yet, its taxonomy is confusing and its biogeography is poorly understood. A principal problem is that taxa of Hydrobia s.l. belong to morphostatic radiations – widely allopatric species radiations with little or no habitat diversification and a low level of anatomical change. So far, three morphostatic radiations can be identified within Hydrobia s.l.: Hydrobia s.s., Peringia, and Ventrosia. These radiations are identical with the putative genera of Hydrobia s.l. The purpose of the paper is to infer phylogenetic relationships within one of these radiations, Hydrobia s.s. in the northern Atlantic and western Mediterranean. A total of 22 populations, including topotypical populations of five commonly used taxa, were studied genetically using partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. Based on molecular data and the species concept we define, the following species and subspecies were identified: Hydrobia acuta acuta (Draparnaud, 1805) [=H. minoricensis (Paladilhe, 1875)], H. acuta neglecta Muus, 1963, and H. glyca (Servain, 1880) (=H. joossei van Aartsen, Menkhorst and Gittenberger, 1984). One population from Djerba, Tunisia (Hydrobia sp. A) and one population from Mallorca, Spain (Hydrobia sp. B) are genetically distinct from all other taxa studied here. Both populations potentially represent new species. Due to the fact that only one population each has been studied, and so the degree of variation within these two taxa cannot be assessed, a final decision regarding their species level cannot yet be made. A grazing experiment was started in 1984 and 1989 respectively, in two parts of a dune grassland in the nature reserve ‘Zwanenwater’, North Holland; a third part with similar geology and topography was used as a control area and not grazed. An evaluation of the effects of grazing on vegetation patterns, species composition, vegetation structure and humus form was made with the help of vegetation maps from 1986 and 1992 as well as field surveys. Dense tall-grass communities dominated byAmmophila arenaria increased over the period 1986–1992 in the grazed areas, and especially in the non-grazed area (increase in area to 20 %, 22 % and 50 %, respectively). Open communities decreased in the grazed areas, but are still prevalent, while in the ungrazed area they virtually disappeared, with the result that the present percentage areas are 53 %, 38 % and 17 %. Field survey data were classified by TWINSPAN producing four vegetation types. These occur more or less equally in grazed and ungrazed areas, albeit with different percentage areas: (1) open vegetation dominated byCorynephorus canescens; (2) open vegetation characterized byKoeleria macrantha; (3) heathland dominated byEmpetrum nigrum; and (4) tall-grass communities dominated byAmmophila arenaria. Within a vegetation type, species composition was only marginally affected by grazing regime. Within the open communities the number of species, vegetation height, vegetation cover and soil organic horizons were not affected by grazing. In the tall-grass communities the number of species was significantly larger and the height of the vegetation significantly lower in the area grazed since 1984. In the heathland community the number of species and cover of the moss layer were significantly higher in the 1984 area and ectorganic and endorganic horizons significantly thicker in the ungrazed area. It is suggested that these effects are the result of an increased availability of light, but possibly also of a decreased stock of organic matter and nutrients, due to a decreased input of litter and accelerated rates of decomposition. Growth and compounds of carbon and nitrogen of the northeast Pacific kelpPleurophycus gardneri (Laminariales, Laminariaceae) were assessed before, during and after the 1983-El Niño Souther Oscillation event. This 2-yr study provides evidence that reduced ambient levels of nitrate and phosphate from March until August/September, 1983, in combination with elevated seawater temperature, caused a significant impairment of growth. Blade surface area, blade length, total fresh weight, and dry weight on an areal basis were significantly reduced in 1983 compared to 1982 (P<0.01). They were also significantly smaller in 1984 than in 1983 (P<0.05). The C:N values obtained both in May and July 1983 were considerably higher than in 1982, while those in May 1984 were strikingly smaller than in both 1982 and 1983. Mannitol content of the mibrid in May 1983, exhibited the highest levels recorded during the 2-yr study period, with ca. 19% dry weight and significantly exceeded mannitol content measured in May 1982 (average: 13%) and in May 1984 (average: 8%). The concentration factor for internal vs external nitrate in the midrib was 700 x ambient in May 1982 and 1984 compared with 20 x in May 1983. Ninhydrin positive substances (NPS) averaged 117 mol g dry wt-1 in May 1984 compared with ca. 50 mol in May 1982 and 1983. The pigment ratios chlorophyllc: chlorophylla and fucoxanthin: chlorophylla in May 1983 were similar to those obtained in 1982, but were significantly different in May 1984. It is suggested that the interactive effects of temperature stress and nutrient limitation in 1983 caused a disruptive influence on C- and N-metabolism ofPleurophycus gardneri, which still affected growth performance in 1984.  相似文献

A study of the seasonal dynamics of cell proliferation in the digestive tract epithelia of the mussel Crenomytilus grayanus (Bivalvia) collected in the Sea of Japan between 1971 and 1984 revealed two opposite states so far unknown for marine molluscan tissues: proliferative resting in winter and a following outburst of cell division in spring. In winter and early spring (at water temperatures below or near 0°C), mitotic figures in the lining epithelia of labial palps and intestine strongly reduced in number and later almost disappeared (February-March); DNA-synthesizing cells in these epithelia on thymidine radioautographs became sparse and only a restricted number of new cells entered the cell cycle. A proliferation block was relieved at the beginning of April (at a temperature of 2 to 4°C): an initiation of a many-fold increase in the mitotic index and some increase in the 3H-T-labelled nuclei index and their advance to the maximum in late April to May (up to more than 0.2 and 5 to 6%, accordingly) were found. In late spring (at temperatures of 5 to 10°C), a striking rise in the number of cells entering the cell cycle was observed with a probable acceleration of the cycle proper. Both seasonal states of cell proliferation — a deep depression and outburst, established in the winter-spring period are interpreted as essential events in the life cycle of the mussel studied.  相似文献

Specimens of the Indo-Pacific piscivorous gastropod Conus magus Linnaeus, 1758 were either collected by SCUBA in the field in Palau (1983–1984) or raised in the laboratory from egg capsules. C. magus captures adult fish with a specially modified radula tooth. Radula morphology was analyzed in a size range of individuals from 4.1 to 43.7 mm shell length, which encompassed early postmetamorphic juveniles to adults. Post-metamorphic C. magus juveniles are too small to consume fish, and all individuals below 9 mm possess a juvenile radula tooth totally different from that of the adult and resembling that of some vermivorous Conus species. The only food remains found in the digestive tracts of juveniles were the setae of syllid polychaetes. All individuals above 10.5 mm possessed adult teeth and had only fish remains in the gut. Two specimens, 10.1 and 9.2 mm in shell length, had intermediate-type radula teeth.  相似文献

Six semi-synthetic diets with a casein and corn-starch base, containing 10 to 60% protein were fed for 4 months to young gilthead breams (Chrysophrys aurata, of average initial weight 2.6 g). The object of the study was to determine the optimum amount of protein necessary for growth. The daily intake of the gilthead breams was 5.2 to 2.3% of their live weight. The less protein the diet contained, the more feed the fish consumed. The conversion factor decreased regularly as protein percentage increased. The most favourable conversion rate was 1.4, noted for the group receiving 60% protein. The less protein in the diets, the better the protein efficiency for weight gain and body protein retention. Growth of gilthead breams was proportional to protein content of the diet up to an incorporation rate of 40%. Beyond this, no significant difference in final average individual weight was observed. These results are discussed in relation to those reported for other species of fishes. They show that the gilthead bream requires about 40% protein in its diet, as do most fresh-water species.  相似文献

Structure and ultrastructure of the digestive tract of the ectoparasitic stages of the Antarctic isopod Gnathia calva, collected in the Weddell Sea and around the Antarctic Peninsula in the 1984–1985 season, are briefly described. There are only two digestive glands, with an ultrastructure similar to that of other isopods. The gut is divided into six regions: oesophagus, stomach, dilatable reservior for sucked-in blood, sphincter, rectal vesicle with symbiontic bacteria, and rectum. The highly dilatable anterior hindgut (reservoir) takes part in the resorption of nutrients and stores lipids and glycogen. The rectal vesicle has an epithelium with all the features of an organ with high metabolism and the capacity for the transportation of small molecules. The surface is increased by irregular microvilli. A very thin intima and a basal labyrinth are present. The presence of symbiontic bacteria is discussed in correlation with the haematophagous nutrition of G. calva.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations of benthic fauna over a wide region (>1,000 km) that includes complex ocean currents have seldom been quantitatively studied. The present study revealed malacofaunal variations on Japanese rocky shores affected by the Soya, Tsushima, Oyashio, and Kuroshio currents, and in the Inland Sea. On 29 shores in seven regions in these sea areas, previous researchers have recorded the number of molluscs in quadrats in spring and summer of 1978 and 1984–1986. Reanalyses of these records revealed the following patterns. (1) Shore-to-shore variation in malacofauna was correlated with shore-to-shore geographical distance less clearly for more southern regions. This might show that in southern regions many taxa with low relative abundance are haphazardly recorded on some shores and blur the effect of shore-to-shore distance on malacofaunal dissimilarity. (2) Region-to-region variation in malacofauna was significantly correlated with region-to-region geographical distance. This suggests the influences of environments and paleontological events specific to each current surrounding each region. (3) The pattern of dissimilarity between the Inland Sea and the other sea areas greatly changed from the 1970s to 1980s. This was due in part to the following density fluctuations on some shores in the Inland Sea: increases in the non-indigenous mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, cultured oyster Crassostrea gigas, and littorinid Littorina brevicula reportedly abundant in sheltered areas; and decreases in the littorinid Nodilittorina radiata reportedly abundant in exposed areas and muricid gastropods Thais spp. showing imposex. This suggests an increase of anthropogenic perturbations during the study period in the Inland Sea which is surrounded by large cities and ports. The ratio of RNA to DNA (RNA:DNA) was used to assess the relative growth rates of the hydrothermal vent vestimentiferans Ridgeia piscesae Jones and R. phaeophiale Jones. This biochemical indicator of growth is especially valuable when actual growth rates are difficult to measure. Tubeworms were collected from five hydrothermally active sites along the Juan de Fuca Ridge, in the Northeast Pacific Ocean in the summers of 1984 and 1986. We found significant variation in RNA:DNA among Ridgeia spp. from the five sites which was not due to size of the tubeworms or to a species-specific difference. Instead, differences in RNA:DNA were related to site of collection. Mean RNA:DNAs of 2.1 and 3.9 for R. piscesae from two sites were significantly different from each other, but not from that of tubeworms from a third site (mean=2.9). Similarly, mean RNA:DNAs of 2.3 and 4.5 for R. phaeophiale from two sites were significantly different. These patterns in RNA:DNA may reflect differences in growth rates arising from variation in environmental factors over spatial scales as small as 2 m.  相似文献

The movements of two species of predatory whelks (Muricidae: Gastropoda) were examined on several rocky seashores in New South Wales, Australia, from 1980 to 1984. The smaller species, Morula marginalba Blainville, moved less far than the larger species, Thais orbita (Gmelin). Intermittent but rapid movement allowed T. orbita to shelter in exposed places low on the shore, but to feed on their preferred prey, barnacles, much higher up to shore. This resulted in a dynamic and unpredictable pattern of vertical foraging movements for this species. Compared to areas with intact prey or with barnacles that had been killed but not removed, M. marginalba moved quickly away from areas from which barnacles had been experimentally removed. Many M. marginalba left experimental plots on two shores without prey or crevices in which to shelter, whereas some stayed over 30 d in areas with either prey or crevices (but not both), and most remained in plots where both prey and crevices were available. Thus, the presence of suitable prey and crevices seems to influence the movements of both species, which respond in different ways, corresponding to their different mobilities. These results are discussed in relation to the behavioural cues involved and predation by the whelks.  相似文献

Colidotea rostrata (Benedict, 1898) is the only known commensal idoteid isopod, living on and mimicking the color of two northeastern Pacific sea urchins of the genus Strongylocentrotus. The population dynamics and reproductive biology of C. rostrata on its host urchins were studied at a low rocky intertidal area in southern California (33°40N; 118°30W) from December 1984 to December 1986. Isopod populations remained relatively stable throughout the 2 yr study, with isopods inhabiting an average of 56.1% of the urchins at 6.1±0.6 (x±2 SE) isopods per urchin. Female isopods reach sexual maturity at a length of 6.8 mm. Fecundity in C. rostrata averaged 11.8±0.9 (x±2 SE) embryos per brood, and increased with female body size. Breeding occurs all year long in C. rostrata, with a main reproductive period between the warmer spring and summer months. Newly released mancas and juvenile isopods were present during all months of the study. C. rostrata differs from the free-living Idoteidae in its smaller maximum size, reduced fecundity, 1:1 sex ratio, and low juvenile mortality. These features may represent adaptations to a commensal life style that reflect a reduced mortality pressure on these isopods.  相似文献

Gut evacuation rates were measured in Calanus hyperboreus and C. glacialis from two stations in Jones Sound, Northwest Territory (NWT) and one station in an Ellesmere Island Fjord during late summer of 1984. Gut content decreased exponentially with a rate constant, that, for Stage V C. glacialis at least, was independent of food type and time of day. Gut filling rates were measured in Stage V C. glacialis in the light and in the dark, at noon and midnight. Nighttime gut filling rates were very similar for both light intensities, and also similar to the daytime rate in the dark, whereas the daytime rate in the light was much lower. Ingestion rates were calculated for these latter experiments, including a rate term for defecation, and these results were compared to the values obtained from the observations of gut filling rates in vivo as reported in Head et al. (1985) and from long-term (2–3 d) bottle incubations as reported in Head et al. (in press). The following points were made: (1) in-vivo and in-vitro ingestion rates were very close if appropriate in-vitro experimental conditions were used with respect to light intensity and time of day; (2) copepods could fill their guts at a rate apparently higher than their normal nocturnal ingestion rate; and (3) the calculated rations were dependent on the shape of the observed diurnal feeding patterns.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and allozyme variation were analysed in samples of mussels collected in 1984 and 1985 from four localities in South West England and one locality in South Wales, a region of Britain where the common mussel (Mytilus edulis) occurs sympatrically and hybridises with the Mediterranean mussel (M. galloprovincialis). Significant differences in mtDNA genotype frequencies for three restriction enzymes (BstEII, XbaI, and EcoRI) were observed between mussels from M. galloprovincialis populations (Padstow and Bude) and those from an M. edulis population (Swansea). Some mtDNA genotypes at high-frequency in M. galloprovincialis were not observed in M. edulis, although there was no indication that mtDNA variation provides greater overall diagnostic power than allozyme variation in distinguishing between the two forms of mussel. Construction of a phylogenetic tree of multiple mtDNA genotypes revealed small mutational distances between the genotypes characterising M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis. The results were consistent with predominant mtDNA flow from M. edulis to M. galloprovincialis. This can be explained by the dispersal of larvae to South West England from M. edulis regions to the north and east, but little dispersal in the opposite directions. Samples from two hybrid populations (Whitsand and Croyde) were analysed. mtDNA genotype frequencies at Croyde were in line with predictions made on the basis of two partially diagnostic allozyme loci (Est-D and Odh), mtDNA frequencies at Whitsand were not. Frequencies of some mtDNA genotypes at Whitsand were characteristic of M. edulis, others of M. galloprovincialis. Differential selective mortality or flow of different mtDNA genotypes and allozyme variation are proposed as possible causes of these results.  相似文献

Three morphologically similar species of the polychaete genus Hediste [H. limnicola (Johnson, 1901), H. diversicolor (O. F. Müller, 1776), and H. japonica (Izuka, 1908)] have been described, respectively, from the west coast of North America, Europe, and Japan. Although these taxa are geographically isolated by oceans, the morphological criteria by which they can be separated are sufficiently variable as to make identification difficult. We have compared these three taxa biochemically using ten allozyme loci and have found that they are genetically distinct and constitute valid species. H. japonica (collected in June 1990 from Kyushu, Japan) appears more closely related to H. limnicola (collected in July 1989 from two sites in California and two in Oregon, USA) than it is to H. diversicolor (collected in October-November 1989 from the Weser estuary and the Jadebusen in Germany). H. limnicola has been recognized previously as a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite, but it is quite polymorphic in the four populations examined and we suggest that some cross-fertilization must occur in the field. Marked allele frequency differences between the two H. diversicolor populations examined, which were separated by only about 30 km, suggested that there was restricted gene flow between populations, or that there had been strong short-term selection.  相似文献

The Lophogastrida are primitive Mysidacea and comprise only six genera. One of these, Eucopia is considered as highly specialized and constitutes the family Eucopiidae; the other genera constitute the Lophogastridae. Among the latter family, the genus Gnathophausia is closely related to Eucopia, with two species (G. gracilis and E. sculpticauda) sharing similar morphological characteristics [i.e. ornamentation (spines) of the uropods, and the gastric mill]. This indicates that these species are phylogenetically related. To test this hypothesis, the partial 16S mitochondrial ribosomal RNA gene from various representative species of Gnathophausia and Eucopia were compared. The resulting phylogenetic tree suggests that each genus is monophyletic, and that Gnathophausia, which is the deepest-branching genus, is the most primitive, with the Eucopiidae originating from the Lophogastridae. The molecular results support the morphological hypothesis, and suggest an early separation of the two genera or a rapid divergence of Eucopia due to morphological specialization. The ichthyofauna of the neustal (0 to 10 cm) and immediate subsurface water (12 to 48 cm) of Galway Bay was sampled during the day from June 1983 to September 1984 and at night from May to September 1984. Species diversity (H) and the number of species per sample were significantly higher at night. The density of larvae at night was higher only during May. Thirty-nine of the more common species were grouped by factor analysis resulting in 13 species groups with distinct spatial and temporal distributions. Three main time periods, February to April, May to July and July to September and three spatially defined station categories, each of which had distinct species groups, were also isolated by factor analysis. Station categories were contiguous and hydrographically and topographically distinct. Eight species groups showed evidence of vertical migration. Five groups were most abundant from July to September compared with three during May to June and one to two at other times. Eighty-one species or other taxomonic entity (genus or family) were recorded. The majority were pseudoneustonic and represented by early larvae and post-larvae. Euneustonic species (Ciliata mustela, Ciliata septentrionalis, Crenimugil labrosus, Gaidropsaurus mediterraneus, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Liza sp., Rhinonemus cimbrius, Scophthalmus maximus) were all present as late post-larvae or juveniles and all except Ciliata spp occurred during autumn. Facultatively neustonic species (Ammodytes marinus, Belone belone, Ctenolabrus rupestris, Entelurus aequoreus, Nerophis lumbriciformis, Sprattus sprattus, Trachinus vipera) were, except for Belone belone and Ctenolabrus rupestris, all represented by juveniles. All except Ammodytes marinus and Sprattus sprattus were common only in autumn.  相似文献

The frostfish Lepidopus caudatus (Euphrasen, 1788) is a mesopelagic species; it occurs along the shelf and slope down to 450 m in the Catalan Sea. Its' fishery, population structure, growth, diet and reproduction was studied on the basis of commercial statistics from 1984 to 1990 and on samplings made in 1988 and 1989. L. caudatus is fished by two types of commercial method, trawl and long-line; catches by the latter method display a marked seasonality. The minimum size of fish caught is 26 cm total length by trawling and 71 cm by long-line. Maximum sizes are similar for both gears: 196 and 188 cm, respectively. L. caudatus exhibits fast growth and attains an age of 8 yr. It feeds on small mesopelagic prey. It is a partial spawner reproductive activity occurring from April to November. Males attain sexual maturity at 97 cm and females at 111 cm total length.  相似文献

Effects of algal diet on digestive enzyme activity in Calanus helgolandicus   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Adult female Calanus helgolandicus were transferred, immediately after collection in the English Channel in June 1984, to two unialgal diets one of which, the flagellate Cryptomonas maculata, was rich in starch, while the other, the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii, contained no starch. The activity of the digestive enzymes amylase, trypsin and laminarinase was measured in these two populations under foodsaturating conditions over an acclimation period of eight days. Ingestion rates were measured on a daily basis and the results confirmed, together with a constant level of body protein, that the experimental conditions were above the incipient limiting concentration. In the long-term (4 to 8 d), the activities of all three enzymes were significantly elevated in the C. maculata-fed copepods, whereas ingestion rates were lower than those on T. weissflogii. These results observed under food-saturating conditions indicate a compensatory mechanism between digestive enzymes and the substrate ingested. They are consistent with previous work on Artemia sp. suggesting that the rate of assimilation is a function of the digestive enzyme activity and ingestion rate. Enzyme activity exhibited differing shortterm responses (<48 h) on transfer to the two algal diets, which are interpreted in relation to the in situ activity of the field population.Communicated by J.
