The National Research Council's report, Innovations in Ground Water and Soil Cleanup: From Concept to Commercialization, reviewed the implementation of innovative remediation technologies and portrayed a bleak outlook for them. Conversely, Terra-Kleen has invented, patented, permitted, and profited through the use of an innovative technology in the current market. Terra-Kleen has implemented a solvent extraction technology for the removal of PCBs, PAHs, and chlorinated pesticides from soil, sediment, and debris. To date, Terra-Kleen has successfully processed over 23 million pounds of PCB-contaminated soil in Alaska, California, Florida, Ohio, and Oklahoma. The company has been profitable each year since its inception, and has averaged a revenue growth rate of 94 percent per year for the last four years. Corporate growth has been financed entirely through profits and conventional bank loans at favorable interest rates. This article reviews the factors that have led to Terra-Kleen's success, overviews the solvent extraction technology, and details specific projects that have implemented the technology.  相似文献

Sustainable remediation is at a crossroads. In a few short years it has become a mainstream topic while simultaneously maintaining its chimeral status. Sustainable remediation is a term claimed by many yet a concept apparently understood by few. Its characterization has necessitated the development of a plethora of metrics and tools yet its essence readily emerges. U.S.‐led initiatives have been adopted around the globe. Relative sustainability appraisal is easy to carry out and potentially sufficient for most site circumstances. The need to adequately protect human health and the environment has been recognized. 使用固定剂将颗粒状活性炭固定在盘片上,制成了一种新型生物转盘盘片——活性炭生物转盘盘片。采用一级微型生物转盘法处理模拟化工废水,对比了活性炭、石英砂、聚丙烯3种生物转盘的处理效果。实验结果表明,活性炭生物转盘对COD的去除效果好于其他两种转盘。在进水COD为600mg/L、水力停留时间为6h、盘片转速为4r/min的条件下,活性炭生物转盘对COD的去除率可达71.3%。此外,活性炭生物转盘还有较强的耐有机负荷冲击能力。在废水处理过程中,活性炭仅在挂膜的前7天起吸附作用,挂膜成功后生物降解起主导作用。  相似文献

Nanoscale zero‐valent iron (nZVI) is the most commonly used nanoremediation material. While there has been a reasonable level of application of nZVI technologies for in situ remediation in the United States, its utilization across Europe has been much more limited. There has been significant uncertainty about the balance between deployment risks and benefits for nanoparticles (NPs), which has affected the regulatory position in several countries. Some member states of the European Union (EU) take a strong precautionary view of the risks from the deployment of NPs into the subsurface, preventing the adoption of the technology. This article provides a risk–benefit assessment for nZVI based on published information and describes the steps that will be taken by a major European research project (NanoRem), as part of its work to provide a basis for better informed decision making in European environmental restoration markets. A key part of this process is dialogue between practitioners and researchers. NanoRem therefore has an active process of communication with different stakeholder networks (regulators, service providers, and site owners). NanoRem hopes to stimulate a consensus on appropriate use of nanoremediation and thereby stimulate effective technology transfer to the European remediation market. ©2015 The Authors  相似文献

Municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in China warrants particular attention as China has become the largest MSW generator in the world and the total amount of MSW it produces continues to increase. In recent years, central and local governments have made great efforts to improve MSWM in China. New regulations and policies have been issued, urban infrastructure has been improved, and commercialization and international cooperation have been encouraged. Considering these developments, an overview is necessary to analyze the current state as well as new opportunities and challenges regarding MSWM in China. This paper shows that since the late 1990s, the amount of MSW collected has been largely decoupled from economic growth and incineration has become an increasingly widespread treatment method for MSW. We identify and discuss four major challenges and barriers related to China’s MSWM, and propose an integrated management framework to improve the overall eco-efficiency of MSWM.  相似文献

The utilization of pesticides during the last 30 years in Poland has left some hundreds of thousands of tonnes of highly toxic waste, creating an alarming situation for nature and man. This pesticide waste, which has been buried under less than ideal conditions throughout the entire country, is leaching out of many of its containers and is endangering the groundwater and general environment. The extent and the impact of this contamination is unknown.
