Gastrotricha were quantitatively sampled at low tide on several dates from two transeets at Eagle Cove, San Juan Island, Washington, USA, during the summers of 1963/1964. They showed low species diversity and very high whole-beach densities. Chaetonotus testiculophorus Hummon, 1966 and Turbanella cornuta Remane, 1925 were found abundantly, Paraturbanella intermedia Wieser, 1957 only rarely. Abundant C. testiculophorus were found above 100 cm elevation; T. cornuta occurred abundantly in a rip-channel trough and in the lower beach area. T. cornuta, but not C. testiculophorus, showed significantly greater clumping at high than at low density. Curves of LC90 temperature-salinity tolerance for both species show that they tolerate widely fluctuating temperatures and salinities. Causes of whole-beach distribution patterns are discussed.Research was supported by an NSF College-University Association Grant (G-17537), administered by the Graduate School, University of Washington, Seattle, and was conducted at the Friday Harbor Laboratories, San Juan Island, Washington, during the summers of 1963 and 1964.  相似文献

Newly settled juvenile ascidians were transplanted into shaded and unshaded sites at two subtidal depths to test the hypothesis that photonegative settlement behavior enhances juvenile survival. Silt, filamentous algae and grazing gastropods (Margarites pupillus) were identified as sources of mortality associated primarily with non-cryptic microhabitats. Silt inflicted heavy mortality on all six species tested. Algal overgrowth was important in shallow water, where it increased mortality and depressed growth rates over a 14-d period. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that gastropods can remove juvenile ascidians from the substratum. The sources of post-settlement mortality investigated may help determine distributional patterns of ascidians in the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA, and may also represent selective pressures that maintain negative phototaxis in the behavioral repertoires of ascidian tadpoles.  相似文献

Searlesia dira Reeve is a locally abundant, carnivorous gastropod that occurs from Alaska to central California. I studied populations of this snail at a variety of sites on San Juan Island in order to provide information on their distribution and abundance and to analyze their community role, i.e., their potential impact on their prey populations and their dietary overlap with co-occurring invertebrate predators. I established permanent transects, both random and in crevices, at three areas of differing exposure to wave action. On these transects I recorded the number and size ofS. dira, activity, distance to nearest neighbor, other organisms present, and tidal height on four phases of the mixed semi-diurnal tidal cycle. The results are (1) an increase in density with increase in substrate relief, (2) an occurrence of highest densities in moderately exposed and exposed sites rather than in protected ones, (3) an increase in mean size with increase in depth along the intertidal gradient, (4) an increase in both total activity and feeding success on the high water immediately following an extreme minus low tide occurring during the daytime in the summer, (5) a relative restriction of feeding success to that high tide, and (6) a similarity of the diet to the relative abundance of the main observed prey for most areas. The main exceptions are chitons and one lower intertidal limpet, all of which are taken in excess of their apparent abundance and especially in the middle intertidal. The upward extension of some lower intertidal prey populations, such as chitons, may be limited by the increased susceptibility of individuals at the upper margin of the population to predators such asS. dira; susceptibility appears to be increased after periods with a higher probability of increased physiological stress, such as extreme low tides on summer days.  相似文献

Data on benthic infauna from 4 permanent stations in Puget Sound off Seattle, USA, collected during 1963–1964, 1967, and 1969, revealed considerable stability in numbers of species and specimens and in diversity within stations among sampling dates. The species composition of the faunal assemblages also remained rather constant during the period of investigation, but the relative dominance among the numerically important species varied somewhat. Biomass data did not differ significantly in 1964 and 1969, but the 1967 data were considerably lower at all stations.  相似文献

Adult horseshoe crabs Limulus polyphemus (L.) feed on a wide variety of infaunal and epifaunal invertebrates during their spring spawning migration in Delaware Bay, New Jersey, USA. Comparison of the gut contents with estimates of available prey showed that the most abundant potential prey item, the bivalve Gemma gemma, was avoided. The thinner shelled but comparatively scarce clam Mulinia lateralis was a preferred prey item. In the laboratory, crabs fed on G. gemma when it was the only available item but not when M. lateralis or soft-shell clams, Mya arenaria, were offered in conjunction. Large M. lateralis (>10mm) were preferred to small M. lateralis; there was no discrimination between M. lateralis and M. arenaria of the same size. Male and female horseshoe crabs had similar gut contents and laboratory feeding preferences, despite the fact that females are larger than males. Crabs spawning later in the summer contained more food than did crabs collected at the peak of spawning activity.  相似文献

This work analysed the carbon sequestration potential in two species of mangroves (Rhizophora mucronata and Avicennia marina) along with their growth, biomass, sediment characteristics for four seasons of the year 2009–2010, in planted stands of different age (1–17.5 years) in the Vellar-Coleroon estuarine complex, India. The mangroves were recorded to store significant amount of biomass. Avicennia marina performed better to display 75 % higher rate of carbon sequestration than that in Rhizophora mucronata. This could be attributed to growth efficiency and high biomass production. For instance, Avicennia marina exhibited 2.7 fold higher girth, 24 % higher net canopy photosynthesis, 2 fold aboveground biomass (AGB), 40 % more belowground biomass (BGB) and 77.3 % higher total biomass, than R. mucronata did. Seasonally the rate of carbon sequestration was 7.3 fold higher in post-monsoon, 3.4 fold in monsoon, 73 % more in summer than that in pre-monsoon. The rate of carbon sequestration was positively correlated with age of planted site, tree height, tree diameter, net canopy photosynthesis, AGB, BGB, total biomass, carbon stock, growth efficiency, AGB/tree height tree girth, leaf area index, silt content (p?<?0.01). The carbon sequestration was negatively corrected with soil temperature and clay content (p?<?0.05). Mangroves were found to be a productive system and important sink of carbon in the tropical coastal zone, but increasing soil temperature due to global warming would have a negative impact on carbon sequestration potential of the mangroves.  相似文献

The microstructure of the vitelline coat (VC) of the three ascidian species Phallusia mammillata, Ascidia mentula and Ciona intestinalis was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using freeze-substitution and deep-etching. In addition, eggs were examined by light microscopy and prepared by conventional chemical fixation methods for TEM in order to illustrate the advantages of cryopreparation for the preservation of the VC ultrastructure. In conventionally fixed eggs of P. mammillata and A. mentula the VC appeared as a tripartite structure, consisting of a thin outer fibrous layer (OFL), a central dense layer (CDL) and a relatively wide inner fibrous layer (IFL). In C. intestinalis a sparse OFL is made up by fine tufts of filaments but an IFL is lacking. In all three species the test cells were located in the area between the inner VC boundary and the egg cell membrane. Using our modified freeze-substitution method a clear improvement in preservation of the VC matrix was obtained. In all three species the OFL as well as the IFL in P. mammillata and A. mentula appeared as extended fibrous meshworks. Furthermore, the area of the perivitelline space, empty after conventional TEM preparation, was found to be filled by an additional matrix, designated here as perivitelline fibrous matrix (PVFM). Quick-freeze/deep-etch/rotary-shadowing enabled us to confirm the overall architecture of the egg matrix and allowed a further detailed investigation of the VC fine structure in P. mammillata. Accordingly, the vitelline coat of P. mammillata and A. mentula is a multilayered matrix composed of four distinct subunits (OFL, CDL, IFL, PVFM), whereas in C. intestinalis an IFL is lacking. The effects of dry-heat and seed soaking in distilled water or in gibberellic acid on germination performance of Cistus creticus L. and C. laurifolius L. were studied in the present study Germination percentages of two Cistus species were low due to dormancy Soaking in distilled water for 24 hr resulted in 28% germination in C. creticus and 43% in C. laurifolius. Gibberellic acid applications (20, 100 and 250 mg l(-1)) for 24 hr gave 32, 30 and 23% germination, respectively in Cistus creticus and 33, 37 and 28% germination, respectively in C. laurifolius. Dry-heat pretreatments at 50, 80 and 100 degrees C for several times (1-60 min) also significantly increased germination percentage in two species. The highest germination in C. creticus was obtained with dry-heat at 100 degrees C for 1 or 5 min (80% and 83%, respectively) and in C. laurifolius at 100 degrees C for 5 min (87%). A significant increase in germination rate was also achieved under different pretreatments. The physiological dormancy caused by an impermeable seed coat can be overcome by dry-heat pretreatments in two Cistus species.  相似文献

Summary Temporal subcastes in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren were selectively starved to determine if foragers could assess the nutritional status of their nestmates and respond accordingly. We found that starved foragers increase the honey entering the colony (Fig. 1). When nurses are starved more oil and liquid egg yolk enters the colony (Figs. 2, 3) and when both reserves and nurses are starved, more egg yolk powder is brought in by the foragers (Fig. 4). When queens are starved, more liquid egg yolk and oil enters the colony (Figs. 2, 3). Starved larvae increase the oil in the colony (Fig. 2) and when held with nurses for 24h before feeding, increase the egg yolk powder brought in and receive significantly more of it than other subcaste members (Fig. 5). We conclude that foragers can respond to the nutritional needs of their nestmates. Based on our behavioural observations, the quantity of food brought in by the foragers is regulated via discriminatory solicitation by reserves in response to the nutritional needs of the nurses.  相似文献

In January and February 1992 an experiment was conducted in a 10.5-m deep tank (diameter: 3.7 m, volume: 117 m3) to examine the effects of food distribution with respect to a stable thermocline, depth, and substratum type on the settlement and metamorphosis of larvae of the giant scallop, Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin). Polyethylene tube bags (diameter: 0.60 m) were used to enclose 9-m deep columns of seawater which were then used as treatment replicates. A sharp thermocline (i.e. 7 to 11°C gradient) was created between a depth of 4.0 and 5.0 m. At the beginning of the experiment, one million 6-d old larvae were added to the surface of each tube. Two or three replicate tubes of each of four feeding treatments were established: (1) food (Isochrysis galbana) added to the top 1 m of the water column (top-fed, n=3); (2) food added to the bottom 1 m of the water column (bottom-fed, n=3); (3) food added throughout the water column (mixed, n=3); and (4) no food added (unfed, n=2). Settlement collectors were placed in two replicate tubes of each treatment at depths of 0.1, 4, 5, and 9 m and contained two different substrata, Polysiphonia lanosa (a red filamentous alga) and aquarium filter-wool as an algal mimic. Spat settlement in the different feeding treatments was a function of larval growth rate. Most spat were collected in the mixed tubes. Fewer individuals were collected in the top-fed treatment and fewer still in the bottom-fed treatment; minimal numbers of spat were found in the unfed tubes. Filter-wool collected more spat than P. lanosa, but this was evident only in the 4-m deep collectors in the mixed tubes. Most spat were found in the 0.1-m or 4-m deep collectors; generally few were located below the thermocline in collectors at 5 or 9 m. We suggest that, in areas of intense stable stratification, spat collection of the giant scallop may be enhanced by the placement of collectors with appropriate substratum material at or above the zone of stratification, rather than near the bottom. Furthermore, we propose that natural settlement may be increased in areas where a stratification layer intersects with the sea floor or where the layer is disrupted by turbulent mixing.Contribution to the programs of OPEN (Ocean Production Enhancement Network, one of the 15 Networks of Centres of Excellence supported by the Government of Canada) and GIROQ (Group Interuniversitaire de Recherches Océanographiques du Québec)  相似文献

Melipona panamica foragers can deposit a scent beacon that influences the orientation of foragers near a food source. In misdirection experiments, newcomers (bees from the same colony as trained foragers) consistently preferred the feeder at which trained foragers had fed (training feeder) over an identical feeder at which bees had never fed (control feeder) even when the training feeder was placed at a site where experienced foragers had never foraged. Through similar misdirection experiments, the effective radius of the scent beacon was determined to be greater than 6 and less than 12 m. Foragers may deposit this beacon during a sequence of departure behaviors performed at the feeder. Prior to leaving the feeder with a load of sugar solution, bees tended to perform the following sequence of behaviors: (1) spinning, (2) grooming, (3) abdomen dragging, (4) excreting anal droplets, and (5) producing sounds, although not all behaviors were performed prior to each departure or at all sucrose concentrations (0.5–2.5 m). As sucrose concentration increased, the number of newcomers significantly increased, and the number of experienced foragers producing sounds and spinning on the feeder increased. The exact source of the scent beacon remains a mystery. However, three important sources have been excluded. When choosing between identical paired feeders, foragers were not attracted to the feeders with (1) anal droplets, (2) extracts of sucrose solution at which foragers had fed, or (3) mandibular gland extracts. They were indifferent to the first two preparations and exhibited only typical alarm behavior towards the mandibular gland (MG) extract: they oriented towards the feeder with MG extract but consistently landed on the feeder with no MG extract. Other authors have suggested that Melipona foragers deposit anal droplets to attract recruits, however the frequency of anal droplet production and the mass of anal droplets produced by M. panamica foragers are negatively correlated with sucrose concentration. Thus the scent beacon is evidently not deposited with anal droplets, infused into the feeder solution, or produced by mandibular glands. To understand how thermal stratification and food abundance affects the vertical distribution of giant scallop larvae Placopecten magellanicus (Gmelin), a mesocosm study was conducted in January and February 1992. The position of larvae was followed over 55 d in replicated 9-m deep tanks in relation to a sharp thermocline and the presence or absence of phytoplankton. Growth and vertical position of larvae were monitored in separate treatments which included phytoplankton added above the thermocline, below the thermocline, throughout the mesocosm, or absent from the mesocosm. Changes in the vertical position of larvae over time were quantified with a new, profiling, video-optical instrument capable of semi-automatically identifying, counting and sizing larvae. The strong diurnal migration of scallop larvae resulted in aggregations at two interfaces: the air/water interface during the night, and at the thermocline during the day. At times, the concentration of larvae within cm of the surface was > 100 times that in the remaining water column. The formation of bioconvective cells of swimming larvae at the air/water interface allowed larval aggregations to persist throughout the period of darkness. Regardless of the distribution of food, larvae remained above the thermocline during most of the experiment. Therefore, only in those treatments where food was also present above the thermocline was larval growth relatively high. Larger larvae penetrated the thermocline only after reaching a shell length of about 200 m; thus larval size, rather than chronological age, was more important in describing their vertical distribution. The rapid increase in kinematic viscosity with decreasing water temperature at the thermocline may retard the movement of larvae and contribute to aggregation at this interface. The influence of larval size on their vertical distribution, and the resulting potential for horizontal transport to settlement sites, points to the importance of persistent hydrographic features as critical factors contributing to settlement variance in scallops.  相似文献

A 20 month field study was conducted on ammonium excretion rates of the Pacific razor clam Siliqua patula Dixon along the beaches of Washington State, USA. Excretion rates of all those nutrients likely to be regenerated in sufficient quantity to affect surf diatom growth were measured; ammonium appeared to be the most important metabolite. Excretion of ammonium by razor clams far exceeded that by other beach fauna. Ammonium excretion rates of razor clams were positively correlated with shell length, but no correlation between ammonium excretion rate and water temperature was evident. This may be an artifact or may represent some degree of seasonal acclimation of the species to temperature. Weight-specific ammonium excretion rates were negatively related to clam size, indicating a possible large (and unknown) contribution of regenerated ammonium by smaller clams in their first year of growth; smaller clams were rarely captured during this study.Contribution No. 1048 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA.  相似文献

The seasonal moulting pattern of Calanus finmarchicus, related to body size, oil content and depth distribution, was investigated on the Norwegian midshelf from February to October 1997. Both gonad and gnathobase development were well correlated with time, and proved to be good indices for tracing the moulting cycle. The growth and development of gonads preceded the formation of new teeth. Both gonad development and tooth formation patterns in overwintering stage V copepodites (CV) indicated that the most intensive moulting occurred in spring. In the upper 200 m layer, the proportion of copepods in premoult phases ranged from 10% at the beginning of February, 60–95% from the end of February through April, to 4–7% in mid-May. No significant latitudinally determined variations in the moulting pattern were observed. The upward migration of deep-dwelling overwintering CVs was not synchronous and was determined by the readiness to moult. In April, no CVs were found at depths >300 m, that may indicate the termination of the overwintering moulting from Go. By the end of May, the large-sized, lipid-rich CVs of G1 started descending to depth. The second period of moulting (i.e. most likely the formation of G2) was only recorded to have taken place in the surface (0–200 m) component of the CV stock from July onwards. This group was estimated to make up 10–20% of CVs inhabiting the upper 200 m layer and to have originated from the smallest sized fraction of CVs. There was a consistent trend towards size-differential moulting from CVs, in both spring and summer. The large-sized CVs moulted into adults earlier in spring compared with the smaller ones. By mid-June, the large and lipid-rich CVs of G1 disappeared from the uppermost layers, sinking to depths. In summer (July onwards), the moulting of small CVs is probably the main contributor to G2 copepodites that completed the cycle through to CIV/CV by the end of October.Communicated by O. Ontogenic patterns of change in pectoral fin spine Sr:Ca ratios were examined in the Russian sturgeon Acipenser guldenstadti from the Caspian Sea. Pectoral fin spine Sr:Ca ratios of the sturgeon fluctuated strongly along the life history transect in accordance with the migration pattern from freshwater to sea (brackish) water habitats, i.e. all specimens exhibited a typical anadromous pattern in the ratio. Several specimens showed two transition points in pectoral fin spine Sr:Ca ratios from low ratios to high, indicating that those specimens had a flexible migration strategy in the ambient water, and could migrate downstream to the Caspian Sea multiple times after spawning.  相似文献

Otolith microstructure and microchemistry were examined in juveniles of Australasian shortfinned eel, Anguilla australis, from Australia and New Zealand. Patterns in otolith increment widths were similar in these two stocks. A marked increase in otolith increment width was found from age 138 to 198 d (mean ± SD: 164 ± 18.6 d) from Australia, 161 to 208 d (185 ± 17.3 d) from the western coast of New Zealand and 161 to 211 d (187 ± 18.9 d) from the eastern coast. These changes coincided with a drastic decrease in otolith Sr:Ca ratios, suggesting that metamorphosis began at these ages in each species. The duration of metamorphosis estimated from otolith microstructure was the same in the different stocks, 17 to 41 d (mean ± SD: 27 ± 5.4 d). Ages at recruitment were 186 to 239 d (mean ± SD: 208 ± 17.4 d) from Australia, 214 to 263 d (232 ± 19.8 d) from the western coast of New Zealand and 208 to 266 d (237 ± 20.0 d) from the eastern coast. There was a significant difference in the age between the Australian stock and the two stocks from New Zealand. No significant difference was found in the age between the latter two stocks. The difference in the period for the recruitment between Australian and New Zealand stocks seems to reflect their geographical separation. Received: 1 March 1999 / Accepted: 19 July 1999  相似文献
