Summary Chemical components of the cephalic labial gland secretion, which most likely is used as a precopulatory attracting signal, were identified in males of the cuckoo bumblebeesPsithyrus vestalis (Geoffroy) andP. bohemicus (Seidl.) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The former species has geranylcitronellyl acetate as main component, plus in decreasing amounts geranylcitronellol, an eicosadienal, an eicosenol, and an eicosenal. Another 17 fatty acid derivatives are present in minor amounts. The labial secretion ofP. vestalis differs distinctly in its chemistry from that of all of the 8 other ScandinavianPsithyrus species. In the taxonomically closely related (same subgenus)P. bohemicus, the labial gland secretion contains 16 fatty acid derivatives, of which 12 (75%) are present also in the secretion ofP. vestalis. Thus, both the labial gland secretions, and morphological traits lend support to the hypothesis that the two species share a common ancestor. The reproductive isolation between them is, at least in part, supported by the inclusion of a second biosynthetical pathway (the mevalonic acid pathway producing terpenoids) inP. vestalis, in addition to the pathway common to both species (the polyketide pathway producing fatty acid derivatives).  相似文献

The invasive caprellid amphipod Caprella mutica is one of the most widely dispersed marine non-native species globally. Originating in sub-boreal north-east Asia, it has now been found in both the northern and the southern hemispheres. One potential reason why this species is such a successful invader is its ability to utilise a wide variety of food sources. The contribution of different food sources to the diet of C. mutica was estimated using fatty acids as biomarkers. Caprella mutica was collected from three field sites, including sea cages stocked with Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, shellfish longlines stocked with the blue mussel Mytilus edulis and mooring lines marking the Loch Linnhe Artificial Reef (>2 km from caged finfish aquaculture), where established populations of this species are known to occur. In addition, the fatty acid compositions of C. mutica held in aquaria and either fed the microalga, Dunaliella tertiolecta, or the diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, for a period of 21 days were investigated. The fatty acid composition of the diatom and the microalgal diets was also examined. The results showed that C. mutica contained high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly 20:5(n-3); other dominant fatty acids included 18:1(n-9), 22:6(n-3) and 16:0 (in decreasing order based on abundance). Significant differences in the fatty acid profiles between caprellids fed on the microalgae and the diatom diets and between C. mutica collected from the field sites were observed. These results provide evidence that lipid biomarkers can be successfully used to provide evidence of feeding strategy for C. mutica and that the flexibility observed in this strategy may play an important role in its invasion success.  相似文献

The present study is a comprehensive comparison of the biochemical composition (protein, lipid, glycogen and cholesterol contents, and amino acid and fatty acid profiles) of 14 species of cephalopods with different life strategies (benthic, nektobenthic, benthopelagic and pelagic) in distinct habitats (neritic, demersal, oceanic and deep sea), with special emphasis placed on a male Architeuthis sp. The giant squid showed a significantly lower protein and total amino acid content in the gonad and digestive gland. The major essential amino acids were leucine, lysine and arginine. The major non-essential amino acids were glutamic acid, aspartic acid and proline. The benthopelagic cirrate octopus Opisthoteuthis sp. showed a lower content of these nitrogen compounds in the muscle. In respect to lipid and fatty acid contents, the giant squid showed the highest values in the gonad and digestive gland and the lowest in the muscle. Most of saturated fatty acid content was presented as 16:0; monounsaturated fatty acid content, as 18:1 and 20:1; and polyunsaturated fatty acid content, as 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3. The highest cholesterol content in the gonad was detected in Opisthoteuthis sp. and Architeuthis sp.; in the digestive gland. in Todarodes sagittatus; and in the muscle, in Sepia elegans. The highest glycogen value in the gonad was detected in Octopus vulgaris; in the digestive gland and muscle, the highest values were attained in Opisthoteuthis sp. The relationships between life strategies and biochemical composition were investigated and principal component analysis (PCA) was performed. The different cephalopod life strategies could be well separated on the basis of the first two principal components. The nektobenthic and pelagic strategies were clearly separated from the benthic, suggesting that these groups of species are characterized by lower lipid content and higher protein content in the gonad. A rather similar life-strategy distinction was obtained for the digestive gland. The benthopelagic strategy was also well separated from benthic and pelagic strategies and from Architeuthis sp. In the muscle, the results indicated lower nitrogen and carbon compound contents in Architeuthis sp. and Opisthoteuthis sp. The environmental conditions that possibly explain the Architeuthis sp. stranding, the relationships between biochemical compositions and the life strategies of the different cephalopod species studied are discussed.Communicated by S.A. The Caribbean reef-building corals Porites porites (Pallas) and Montastrea annularis (Ellis and Solander) and the Red Sea corals Pocillopora verrucosa (Ellis and Solander), Stylophora pistillata (Esper) and Goniastrea retiformis (Lamark) were analysed for total lipid, wax ester and triglyceride content, and fatty acid composition. M. annularis contained about 32% of dry weight as total lipid, whereas much lower values of between 11 and 17% were recorded for the other four species. It is concluded that there is greater variation in coral total lipid than hitherto thought. The total lipid contained a substantial proportion of wax ester (22 to 49%) and triglyceride (18 to 37%). The storage lipids (wax esters and triglycerides) accounted for between 6 and 20% of the dry weight and between 46 and 73% of the total lipid. Variation in lipid content between species could not be attributed to geographical location, but the low values for total lipid in Red Sea corals may in part be due to environmental factors as these samples were collected in winter. All corals analysed contained high levels of saturated fatty acids, the most abundant fatty acids being 16:0, 18:0 and 18:1n-9. Marked differences were observed in polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content between species, with comparatively low levels of 10 and 11% of fatty acids being recorded in M. annularis and G. retiformis, respectively. The values for the other species ranged between 21 and 37%. Fatty acid composition may vary according to the proportions of fatty acids obtained from diet, algal photosynthesis and synthesis by the animal tissues.  相似文献

Shell preferences were examined inPagurus longicarpus Say, collected from Wakulla Beach, Florida, USA in 1987. Relative shell size was a more important shell characteristic in shell selection than either shell species or shell damage. Hermit crabs rarely selected relatively large shells but often selected relatively small shells over damaged shells. Preferences for a particular shell species were offset by varying the relative size or condition of the preferred shell species. Because specific environmental pressures are linked to particular shell characteristics, an assessment of the importance of various shell features may indicate which environmental pressures are ameliorated via the gastropod shell. Predation and desiccation are linked to relatively small shells and particular shell species; these stresses may be minimized by alternative behavioral mechanisms.  相似文献

To discern species-specific patterns in omnivory indices in copepods from the North Water Polynya, lipid classes and fatty acids were determined in Calanus hyperboreus Krøyer copepodite stage 5 (CV), C. glacialis Jaschnov (CV) and Metridia longa Lubbock (females) sampled below the mixed layer during autumn 1999. Generally, M. longa contained higher proportions of triacylglycerols, polar lipids and 18:1(n-9) than the other species. M. longa also had lower relative amounts of wax esters (WE), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), 20:1(n-9), 22:1(n-11), and lower absolute (g lipid copepod-1) and relative (% lipid) lipid levels. Unsaturation coefficients (UC; ratio of polyunsaturated to total WE) were usually lowest in M. longa. These differences probably relate to a lesser dependence on phytoplankton in M. longa, and hence more ingestion of PUFA-poor prey. Moreover, levels of the carnivory index 18:1(n-9)/18:1(n-7) were highest in M. longa. Our data support the widespread contention that M. longa is more omnivorous than C. hyperboreus and C. glacialis. Proportions of bacterial fatty acids [odd-numbered and/or branched (OBFA); 18:1(n-7)] and PUFA/SFA (SFA: saturated fatty acids) ratios were largely unrelated to feeding strategy. Relationships between relative and absolute amounts of 16:1(n-7) and 18:1(n-7) in copepods suggest that the latter fatty acid is formed in vivo by chain elongation of the former. However, elevated levels of 18:1(n-7) and OBFA in M. longa at stations dominated by the microbial loop imply that these indices can be used to track ingestion of PUFA-poor protozoans when diatoms are scarce.Communicated by J.P. Antarctic fishes contain large quantities of lipid in adipose tissue, blood and oxidative muscle. In this study, the fatty acyl compositions of free fatty acids (FFA) and triacylglycerol (TAG) in serum, adipose tissue and oxidative muscle were determined in two species of Antarctic fishes, Trematomus newnesi Boulenger, 1902, and Notothenia gibberifrons Lönnberg, 1905, collected off the Antarctic Peninsula in February and March 1987. Total lipid contents of serum and oxidative muscle in each species also were measured. T. newnesi, a mesopelagic species, has significantly more lipid in the serum than N. gibberifrons, a demersal species (17.6±2.4 and 10.4±1.0 mg lipid g-1 serum, respectively). The oxidative muscle of T. newnesi also contains more lipid than does that of N. gibberifrons (12.5 and 9.3% by dry weight, respectively). Fatty acids comprising greater than 5% of one or more of the lipid pools assayed in both species include 14:0, 16:0, 16:1, 16:2, 18:0, 18:1, 20:5 and 22:6. The percentages of 16:1 were lower (p<0.05) in oxidative muscle FFA than in all other assayed lipid pools in both species, suggesting a catabolic preference for some monoenes in oxidative muscle of these fishes. The percentage of 14:0 was two-to three-fold higher in adipose tissue TAG than in all other lipid pools in both species. Differences in fatty acid compositions between lipid pools indicate than proteins involved in the mobilization, transport or catabolism of fatty acids exhibit differential recognition of fatty acids in T. newnesi and N. gibberifrons.  相似文献

Changes in the protein, lipid, glycogen, cholesterol and energy contents, total amino acid and fatty acid profiles of Octopus vulgaris and O. defilippi tissues (gonad, digestive gland and muscle) during sexual maturation (spermatogenesis and oogenesis) were investigated. Both species showed an increase of amino acids and protein content in the gonad throughout sexual maturation (namely in oogenesis), but allocation of these nitrogen compounds from the digestive gland and muscle was not evident. The major essential amino acids in the three tissues were leucine, lysine and arginine. The major non-essential amino acids were glutamic acid, aspartic acid and alanine. With respect to carbon compounds, a significant increasing trend (P<0.05) in the lipid and fatty acid contents in the three tissues was observed, and, consequently, there was also little evidence of accumulated lipid storage reserves being used for egg production. It seems that for egg production both Octopus species use energy directly from food, rather than from stored products. This direct acquisition model contrasts with the previous model for Octopus vulgaris proposed by ODor and Wells (1978: J Exp Biol 77:15–31). Most of saturated fatty acid content of the three tissues was presented as 16:0 and 18:0, monounsaturated fatty acid content as 18:1 and 20:1 and polyunsaturated fatty acid content as arachidonic acid (20:4n-6), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3). Though cholesterol is an important precursor of steroid hormones, this sterol content exhibited variations that do not seem to be related with the maturation process. Moreover, significant differences (P<0.05) were obtained between genders, suggesting that perhaps there is a greater physiological demand for cholesterol during spermatogenesis than oogenesis. If the component sterols of octopus are of a dietary origin, considerable variation in the cholesterol content between species might be expected on the basis of the sterol composition of their prey. The glycogen reserves increased significantly in the gonad and decreased significantly (P<0.05) in the digestive gland and muscle of O. vulgaris (these trends were not evident in O. defilippi). Glycogen may play an important role in the maturation process and embryogenesis of these organisms, because carbohydrates are precursors of metabolic intermediates in the production of energy. It was evident that sexual maturation had a significant effect upon the gonad energy content, but the non-significant energy variation (P>0.05) in the digestive gland and muscle revealed no evidence that storage reserves are transferred from tissue to tissue. The biochemical composition of digestive gland and muscle may not be influenced by sexual maturation, but rather by other biotic factors, such as feeding activity, food availability, spawning and brooding.Communicated by S.A. In order to elucidate the mode of particle ingestion and the functional anatomy of the oesophagus in bivalves, a histological study was performed onMytilus edulis (Mytilidae),Crassostrea virginica (Ostreidae),Placopecten magellanicus, Chlamys varia, and juvenilePecten maximus (Pectinidae). Specimens were sampled from various sites in New Brunswick, Canada, and Brittany, France, from 1987 to 1989. The buccal, peribuccal, and oesophageal epithelia of all species contained a dense distribution of actively secreting mucocytes, although these were somewhat less abundant inCrassostrea virginica, which also has the shortest oesophagus. Mucocyte morphology, while constant within a family (Pectinidae), showed clear differences among families. Both acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides were secreted by the epithelial mucocytes of all species. Mucus and mucus-particle masses were observed in the peribuccal and buccal regions, as well as in the oesophageal lumina of all species, even in those specimens which had been maintained without feeding (Placopecten magellanicus) or held out of water for 48 h (C. virginica) prior to dissection and fixation. These results indicate that a basal level of mucus production and transport is continuous on the peribuccal, buccal, and oesophageal ciliated epithelia, regardless of the particle concentration in the external medium. Buccooesophageal glands, generally thought to be absent in the Bivalvia, were observed in one of the species examined (M. edulis). It is concluded that the mode of particle ingestion in these suspension-feeding bivalves is via ciliatransported mucus masses; the presence of buccooesophageal glands inM. edulis suggests a digestive role for the oesophagus in this species.  相似文献

Nylon bags containing yellow leaves of Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia marina, were immersed for 80 days from August to October, 1996. the decomposing leaves were collected every 10 days and analysed for dry weight loss and six biochemical parameters: tannins, total amino acids, total sugars, total nitrogen, total lipids and fatty acid profile. the leaf weight initially decreased very rapidly by about 50% of the start in two species of mangroves within 10 days. Similar changes were observed with tannins, total amino acids and sugars. However, the concentration of nitrogen increased significantly with decomposition. There was no significant change in total lipid and fatty acid profile. the highest concentration of fatty acid in the decomposing leaves was palmitic acid (16:0). Unsaturated fatty acids such as, 18:1 w7c and 18:1 w9c were found to be present in decomposing leaves of both species.  相似文献

The activities of 18 enzymes were measured in gill, hepatopancreas and muscle tissue of the deep-water crabsChaceon fenneri andC. quinquedens and the shallow-water crabCallinectes sapidus collected from the Gulf of Mexico in January 1989. The activities of catabolic enzymes were correlated in general with the known metabolic rates of the three species. Activities were much higher inC. sapidus than inChaceon fenneri andC. quinquedens. In some cases,C. quinquedens had higher activities thanC. fenneri. The activities of enzymes of amino acid metabolism (glutamate dehydrogenase and alanine aminotransferase) were higher inC. quinquedens, which had high hemolymph [ammonia] and ammonia excretion rates. The activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ofC. fenneri andC. quinquedens were correlated with the two species' abilities to withstand hypoxia. The more hypoxiatolerant species,C. quinquedens, had higher activity of LDH in its muscles than didC. fenneri.  相似文献

The reproductive parameters of three species of barnacles common in warm-water regions,Balanus amphitrite Darwin,B. eburneus Gould andB. trigonus Darwin, cultured singly or in pairs for 2 1/2 yr, were compared. All specimens, collected from Tokyo Bay and studied between 1985 and 1987, were fed on newly hatchedArtemia sp. larvae (Tetra strain) and phytoplankton culture and were maintained under constant temperature (20°C) and controlled photoperiods (10 h light:14 h dark). The breeding frequencies of these three species were equally high, from 2 to 4 broods mo–1 in the first year; they were relatively high between October and February, averaging 3 broods mo–1.B. amphitrite, B. eburneus andB. trigonus produced 24, 21 and 11 broods yr–1, respectively. Brood size was quite variable among the three species examined, yielding 4000 embryos brood–1 inB. amphitrite andB. eburneus and 6000 inB. trigonus. Brood interval averaged 4 to 9 d. The moult occurred over short intervals of 4 to 10 d moult–1. Both breeding and moulting frequencies were influenced by low temperature and starvation. Self-fertilization was observed in all species and was more frequent inB. amphitrite than inB. eburneus andB. trigonus. Nutritional condition and temperature seemed to be the main external factors regulating both breeding and moulting processes in barnacles.  相似文献

Morphology and microstructure of the sagittal otoliths from three species of mesopelagic, tropical-subtropical myctophids [Benthosema suborbitale (Gilbert),Diaphus dumerilii (Bleeker)Lepidophanes guentheri (Goode and Bean)], collected from September 1984 to May 1986 in the eastern Gulf of Mexico (27°N, 86°W), were examined and described. Analysis of the microstructure revealed microincrements corresponding to the daily growth rings reported in many studies. Using marginal increment analysis, the deposition of microincrements was verified as occurring daily, the first validation of daily growth rings in the otoliths of mesopelagic fishes. In all three species, the clear central (larval growth) zone of the sagitta was sharply delimited by a dark check accompanied by a series of accessory primordia. A wide, dark, sharply defined postlarval zone (width 100 µm) radiated out from this boundary inB. suborbitale andL. guentheri. While a darkened region was also observed around the larval growth zone inD. dumerilii, it was diffuse and differed in structure from that in the other two species. Within the dark zone in the otoliths ofB. suborbitale andL. guentheri, two different microincremental structures were observed. The narrower of these was determined to be the increment deposited on a daily basis. The structure and formation of the dark region in these three species appear to be related to larval transformation and behaviors of different species of myctophid larvae.  相似文献

Lipids of the Arctic ctenophore Mertensia ovum, collected from Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) in 2001, were analysed to investigate seasonal variability and fate of dietary lipids. Total lipids, lipid classes and fatty acid and alcohol compositions were determined in animals, which were selected according to age-group and season. Changes in lipids of age-group 0 animals were followed during growth from spring to autumn. Total lipids increased from May to September. Lipids as percentage of dry mass were lowest in August indicating their use for reproduction. Higher values occurred in September, which may be due to lipid storage for overwintering. Wax esters were the major lipid class accounting for about 50% of total lipids in age-group 0 animals from July and August. Phospholipids were the second largest lipid fraction with up to 46% in this age-group. The principal fatty acids of M. ovum from all age-groups were 22:6(n-3), 20:5(n-3) and 16:0. Wax ester fatty alcohols were dominated by 22:1(n-11) and 20:1(n-9) followed by moderate proportions of 16:0. The unique feature of M. ovum lipids was the high amount of free fatty alcohols originating probably from the dietary wax esters. In May, free alcohols exhibited the highest mean proportion with 14.6% in age-group 0 animals. We present the first data describing a detailed free fatty alcohol composition in zooplankton. This composition was very different from the alcohol composition of M. ovum wax esters because of the predominance of the long-chain monounsaturated 22:1(n-11) alcohol accounting for almost 100% of total free alcohols in some samples. The detailed lipid composition clearly reflected feeding of M. ovum on the herbivorous calanoid species, Calanus glacialis and C. finmarchicus, the abundant members of the zooplankton community in Kongsfjorden. Other copepod species or prey items seem to be less important for M. ovum.  相似文献

Fatty acid composition of the natural and aquarium-reared common jellyfish Aurelia aurita was investigated. Fatty acid composition of the aquarium-reared A. aurita clearly reflected that of the diet, brine shrimp (Artemia). In the same way, fatty acid composition of the natural A. aurita was assumed to reflect those of natural diets. Samples of natural A. aurita were collected from April 1995 to September 1995 in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, and their fatty acids were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Variation of fatty acid compositions was seasonal rather than dependent on body size. Two major seasonal groups were divided by the cluster analysis of the A. aurita fatty acid composition: the April–June and the August–September clusters. The April–June cluster was characterized by high contents of the (n − 3)-fatty acids of diatom origin, accumulated via the grazing food chain. By contrast, the August–September cluster was characterized by an increase in (n − 6)-fatty acids of macroalgal origin, probably transferred via the detritus food chain. These results suggest that the diet of natural A. aurita may shift between the diatom-based food chain and the detritus-based food chain. Received: 12 April 2000 / Accepted: 1 December 2000  相似文献

The surf diatom Chaetoceros armatum T. West, collected from its natural habitat along the Washington coast (USA), had a large inorganic component in the form of a clay coat (consisting of clay minerals, illite and montmorillonite) surrounding the cell chains: 63% of the dry weight of the natural material collected in November was inorganic. The organic fraction was composed of 67.6% lipid, 29.7% protein, and 1.3% carbohydrate. Culture cells were likewise high in protein and lipid and low in carbohydrate. Traces of chitin found in field samples were probably a contaminant, since chitin was absent from cultured cells. This diatom species serves as a major food source throughout the year for the Pacific razor clam Siliqua patula Dixon, which inhabits these same beaches. Protein constituted 47% and lipid 42% of the dry weight of razor clam tissue. The fatty acid distribution in the diatom lipid resembled that previously reported for other diatom species; similarly, the fatty acid distribution of the clam lipid was similar to that previously reported for other bivalve molluscs. The clam fatty acids differed in chain length and degree of saturation from those extracted from its food source, indicating an active fatty acid metabolism in the clam.Contribution No. 995 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA.  相似文献

Aquaculture studies have revealed that polyunsaturated fatty acids are critical for maintaining substantial growth, survival and reproductive rates, and high food conversion efficiencies for a wide variety of marine and freshwater organisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the gross biochemical and fatty acid composition of both neutral and polar lipid compartments of the razor clam Solen marginatus throughout embryonic and larval development. High levels of stored reserves in S. marginatus eggs allow a short larval development, lasting only 8 days. The energy required for embryogenesis was obtained from stored proteins. During larval development from D-shaped veliger until settlement, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate reserves were indistinctly stored for metamorphosis. Although total lipids increased, fatty acids in both neutral and polar lipids decreased during embryonic development. The depots allow a short larval development in which settlement is reached with lower amounts of stored neutral and polar lipids than the contents found in the oocytes. Non-methylene-interrupted dienoic fatty acid levels were similar to those of some polyunsaturated fatty acids, with increasing percentages at the onset of metamorphosis. This study indicates that S. marginatus exhibits a different pattern in the use of gross biochemical and fatty acid reserves during larval development compared to other razor clam and bivalve species, mainly due to the large size of its eggs and the short larval development stage reported in this species.  相似文献

Abstract: Lethal control, which has been used to reduce local abundances of animals in conflict with humans or with endangered species, may not achieve management goals if animal movement is not considered. In populations with emigration and immigration, lethal control may induce compensatory immigration, if the source of attraction remains unchanged. Within the Columbia River Basin (Washington, U.S.A.), avian predators forage at dams because dams tend to reduce rates of emigration of juvenile salmonids (Oncorhynchus spp.), artificially concentrating these prey. We used differences in fatty acid profiles between Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia) at coastal and inland breeding colonies and terns culled by a lethal control program at a mid‐Columbia River dam to infer dispersal patterns. We modeled the rate of loss of fatty acid biomarkers, which are fatty acids that can be traced to a single prey species or groups of species, to infer whether and when terns foraging at dams had emigrated from the coast. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling showed that coastal terns had high levels of C20 and C22 monounsaturated fatty acids, whereas fatty acids of inland breeders were high in C18:3n3, C20:4n6, and C22:5n3. Models of the rate of loss of fatty acid showed that approximately 60% of the terns collected at Rock Island Dam were unlikely to have bred successfully at local (inland) sites, suggesting that terns foraging at dams come from an extensive area. Fatty acid biomarkers may provide accurate information about patterns of dispersal in animal populations and may be extremely valuable in cases where populations differ demonstrably in prey base.  相似文献

Lipophilic inducers of larval settlement and metamorphosis of Pseudocentrotus depressus and Anthocidaris crassispina, two commercially important sea urchin species in Japan, were isolated from the foliose coralline red alga Corallina pilulifera (collected in 1990 near Saga, Japan) and identified. Larval assays of the fractions obtained by silica gel column chromatography of the total lipids showed that non-polar groups of lipids were effective at inducing larval settlement and metamorphosis. The effective fractions were further subjected to gel filtration (Sephadex LH-20) and also to silica gel column chromatography, and the effective components isolated as single spots by thin-layer chromatography. The components at a concentration of ca. 0.4 mg paper-1 (sample was adsorbed on a paper with 20 cm2) induced high rates of larval settlement of both P. depressus and A. crassispina. Chemical analyses of the components revealed a mixture of free fatty acids (FFAs), dominated by eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5, 41 to 50%), palmitic acid (16:0, 11 to 17%), arachidonic acid (20:4, 9 to 15%), and palmitoleic acid (16:1, 4 to 5%). In assays with the four standard FFAs, only 20:4 and 20:5 induced larval settlement and metamorphosis of the two species, while 16:0 and 16:1 were ineffective. The larvae underwent significant rates of settlement and metamorphosis in response to the two former FFAs at levels as low as 0.18 mg paper-1. Amongst the free fatty acid components of the alga, 20:5 was isolated as the chemical inducer of larval settlement and metamorphosis of the sea urchins in the laboratory.  相似文献

Concentration of Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, Se and Zn were determined in various fish species from the Marmara and Black Sea during 1987 and 1988. Neutron activation analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometry and X‐ray fluorescence methods were used for analysis. No significant differences between metal values in fish collected in 1987 and 1988 were noted except As and Pb. The As and Pb concentrations in the same species of fish were higher in the eastern Black Sea compared with the other locations. The Hg concentration in Thunnus thynnus muscle ranged from 1.05–3.05 μg/g dry weight. On the other hand, the Hg levels in the other species were found below the detection limit. Comparison of the results obtained with data reported for the Mediterranean Sea shows an agreement in general for most of the metal levels.  相似文献
