Growth and moulting of Neomysis integer (Crustacea: Mysidacea)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The growth and moulting of Neomysis integer (Leach) was investigated in the field and the laboratory. In the Ythan estuary, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, monthly samples taken from November 1976 to October 1978 revealed that the summer generation juveniles and mature individuals grew at a rate of 4 to 5 mm and 1 to 2 mm monthly, respectively. The winter generation had a growth rate of 3 to 4 mm monthly for juveniles and about 1 mm for mature individuals; during the winter there was a period of 3 mo when growth was almost completely stopped. Mysids reared in the laboratory on Artemia sp. nauplii had an average daily growth rate of 0.06 mm at 9°C and 0.09 mm at 16°C. The growth factors of N. integer ranged from 3 to 17% for mature and immature individuals, respectively. Intermoult periods ranged from 3 to 7 d in immature mysids to 12 to 18 d in mature mysids. Average laboratory growth curves calculated from information on growth factors and intermoult periods indicate that at 9°C (winter generation) it takes N. integer 277 d to grow to be a 15 mm mature individual, whereas at 16°C (summer generation) it takes 188 d. N. integer moults 24 times as it grows from a juvenile to a mature individual.  相似文献

Sergestes lucens Hansen, a mesopelagic shrimp fished commercially in Suruga Bay, Japan, was successfully reared from egg to post-larval stage V under laboratory conditions. Chaetoceros ceratosporum and Artemia nauplii were found to be satisfactory food in the laboratory during rearing. Growth, mortality, food preference, and feeding and swimming activities during the various developmental stages were investigated. Temperature changes greatly affected the speed of development and the mortality of the larvae. The optimum temperature range for larval development was 18° to 25°C. The growth rate (length) of larval stages was as rapid as 0.16mm/ day at 20 °C and 0.21 mm/day at 23 °C. The larvae first started feeding on phytoplankton at elaphocaris stage I, and then gradually became predators in the post-larval stages. It is suggested that the critical period for the species occurs in the elaphocaris stages. Environmental data, vertical distribution of the species, and data obtained from laboratory experiments suggest that the fluctuation in the abundance of S. lucens is greatly influenced by the water temperature at around 50 m from June to August. Feeding mechanisms observed in the post-larval stages are described.  相似文献

Observations were made on the brooding behavior of 10 laboratory reared female Octopus joubini, including egg laying, care of the eggs, feeding during brooding, and survival of the female from the onset of egg laying. Data concerning the numbers of eggs laid by each female and hatching (duration, frequency, correlation of duration to water temperature, etc.) are given. The newly hatched octopuses (whose ages were determined within 24 h) were fed Uca spp. to determine their growth rate from hatching to 4 months of age. Variation in paternity due to sperm competition or post-copulatory female choice has a major influence on animal mating system evolution and on the levels of genetic variability in natural populations. However, there are relatively few studies comparing the outcome of sperm-competition experiments in the laboratory with natural variation in polyandry among families from the field. In the bushcricket Ephippiger ephippiger, females mate multiply, and the males provide them with a large, nutritious, and probably expensive, donation at mating. We examined paternity in a series of laboratory matings, where females mated with two males, and amongst a series of families collected from a natural population. In the laboratory, paternity was highly bimodally distributed: 24% of families had offspring fathered by the first male to mate, 68% by the second male (in only 8% was paternity shared). In the field, paternity was more mixed: only 27% of families had a single father, 14% had more than two fathers, whilst 59% had two fathers. While unsuccessful matings may contribute to the highly biased paternity in the laboratory, they cannot fully explain the high incidence of complete P2 families. Nonrandom sperm utilisation is therefore likely. Greater sperm mixing in the field probably results from females mating with more males, but the distribution of paternity also reflects an active process of nonrandom sperm utilisation. Confidence of paternity due to last male advantage may be relatively high in this species, and therefore may have facilitated the evolution of the large spermatophore in E. ephippiger.Communicated by D. Laboratory and field studies onNebalia hessleri andN. daytoni off the toast of San Diego, Southern California, showed that although morphologically similar, the habitats, behavior, and natural history of these two species are surprisingly different. In laboratory experiments, Bach species avoided the other's habitat (sand and mats of macrophyte detritus), and in the field, transplanted individuals failed to survive in the other species' habitat.N. hessleri, which inhabits subtidal mats of macrophyte detritus, survived and reproduced well in the laboratory, was iteroparous, and a large percentage of adults were male. This species occurred at very high densities in the field, and ate essentially everything offered in the laboratory, with a diet in the field consisting largely of plant detritus and carrion. The other species,N. daytoni, differed in nearly every way, it inhabited organically impoverished sands, survived poorly in the laboratory, was apparently semelparous, and a small percentage of the adult population was male.  相似文献

 A study of rhythmicity of larval release in three species of intertidal brachyuran crabs, based on laboratory and field experiments, was undertaken at Inhaca Island, southern Mozambique, using Leptodius exaratus and Macrophthalmus grandidieri from December 1994 to January 1995, and Arcotheres palaensis from April to July 1995. L. exaratus and M. grandidieri showed a semi-lunar cycle in larval release. The release of larvae for L. exaratus, a species having conspicuous larvae, occurred in the first half of the night, after the post-crepuscular high tide, which suggests maximisation of protection of larvae from visual predation. The larval release activity matched the late spring and early neap tides. Results from the field were similar to those from the laboratory. M. grandidieri, having inconspicuous larvae, did not show a pattern related to the light–dark cycle and hatched during spring tides (around full and new moons) to maximise larval dispersion. A. palaensis, living inside the host mussel which inhabits the lowest section of the intertidal zone, did not show a relation with moon phase, tidal or light–dark cycles. The analysis of genotypic shifts in field-exposed populations has been proposed as a tool for monitoring the environmental impacts of contaminants. Previous laboratory experiments showed the occurrence of genotypic shifts induced by copper exposure in samples of Hediste diversicolor from the Pialassa estuary (North Adriatic Sea, Italy). In order to test if genotype-tolerance responses observed were consistent at larger spatial scales, populations of H. diversicolor were sampled in three haphazardly chosen estuaries along the Italian coast (Comacchio, Pialassa, Serchio) and exposed to 0.48 mg l−1 Cu2+ under laboratory conditions. Survival analysis procedures were used to test for possible relationships between time-to-death and genotypes at three allozyme loci (ALD, FH, PGI). Genotype-tolerance responses observed at locus ALD were consistent among populations up to 2500 km distant, with genotype ALD 102/102 associated with the shortest survival times. Comparisons with previous laboratory experiments showed that responses to copper stress at locus ALD were also consistent in time, with genotypes ALD 102/102 and ALD 100/102 associated with higher 96 h mortality ratios. Results suggested the occurrence of stable relationships between genotypes at locus ALD and tolerance responses of H. diversicolor to copper stress. Conversely, genotype-tolerance responses at loci PGI and FH were not consistent either in space (among populations from the three estuaries) or in time (between laboratory experiments), being possibly affected by site-specific features of populations or stochastic factors. Results show that genotype-tolerance responses should be carefully verified at different spatial and temporal scales, before considering genotypic shifts among the possible tools for monitoring the effects of environmental stressors.  相似文献

We examined the inheritance of theMytilus edulis CaM-1 Intron 3 locus, a non-coding DNA locus with two potentially neutral length-variants. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to determine theCaM-1 genotype for 799 larvae obtained from 11 laboratory crosses. Larvae were typed singly only 8 to 24 h after fertilization. We find evidence that each allele can be inherited from either sex, that there are no barriers to fertilization between gametes of different genotypes, and that most larvae have genotypes compatible with Mendelian inheritance of the locus. Deviations from expected genotype frequencies were found in some crosses; we suggest that a contributing factor is aneuploidy in early larvae, but a major cause is more likely to be selection at a locus linked toCaM-1, occurring under the artificial laboratory culture conditions. This study demonstrates the feasibility of applying molecular genetic techniques to early larval stages of marine bivalves, and presents a new non-destructive biopsy method for DNA analysis from living adult mussels.  相似文献

Behavioral interactions with native species may influence the invasiveness of introduced species. The salamanders Plethodon glutinosus and P. jordani in the eastern United States share many life history traits and demonstrate complex interspecific interactions that range geographically from competitive exclusion to sympatry. P. jordani was introduced to Mountain Lake Biological Station, Virginia, USA, between the years 1935 and 1945. We tested whether competition for space may influence the invasion of P. jordani into native P. glutinosus habitat by utilizing data from natural distributions, a field experiment, and controlled laboratory experiments. No environmental variables differed where P. glutinosus and P. jordani were collected in the field at the site of P. jordani introduction. In the field experiment, P. glutinosus was more fully exposed during foraging bouts in cages shared with heterospecifics as opposed to ones shared with conspecific salamanders. Condition (mass relative to body length) of salamanders at the end of the 3 months did not differ between conspecific and heterospecific treatments. In the laboratory, P. glutinosus most often attained the single burrow in the arena, but residency status had no effect. Species cohabited the burrow 50% of the time. Pair-wise encounters in the laboratory indicated that both species spend less than 20% of the time in aggressive behaviors as juveniles. Physiological responses of Mytilus chilensis exposed to the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella were measured over 21 days in the laboratory and were compared with control mussels not exposed to the dinoflagellate. Mussels were collected from culturing ropes at Yaldad Bay, southern Chile (43o08′S 73o44′W), in August 2004 and acclimated to laboratory conditions for one week prior to the experiment. After 8 days, the paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins (i.e. saxitoxin) in the tissues of exposed mussels exceeded safe levels for human consumption. Clearance rates, ingestion of organic matter, and absorption efficiency of exposed mussels were significantly lower than those of controls on day 0, but this was followed by an increase on day 3. The exposed mussels also increased their excretion rate over time, and this increase was significantly correlated with the accumulation of PSP toxins in their tissues. Oxygen consumption was not affected by the PSP toxins. The scope for growth (SFG) on day 0 was negative in exposed mussels, but it increased during the experiment. Although feeding activity and absorption efficiency were adversely affected during the first few days of exposure to PSP toxins from A. catenella in the laboratory, the M. chilensis cultured in Yaldad Bay may have evolved mechanisms that allow them to exploit the toxic dinoflagellate as a food source.  相似文献

The hermit crab Pagurus pollicaris is the common host for the polyclad turbellarian Stylochus zebra in the Atlantic coastal waters from Massachusetts to North Carolina, USA. S. zebra is reported for the first time from two other hermit crabs, Pagurus impressus and Petrochirus diogenes. It was not found with Clibanarius vittatus or Pagurus longicarpus, although the latter serves as a host along the Gulf coast of Florida. The incidence of the polyclad with P. pollicaris in Massachusetts is more than twice that in populations to the south. Multiple infestations (up to 7 worms/crab) occur in over 50% of the infested crabs from Massachusetts, but they are rare elsewhere. Worms living in clear plastic shells with crabs orient in the body whorl dorsal to the host. Egg masses of worms are cemented in the same position within gastropod shells harboring the crabs. In the laboratory, the worm feeds on the gastropod Crepidula plana, a common inhabitant of shells occupied by P. pollicaris. Its feeding behavior is described. The relationship between S. zebra and P. pollicaris appears to be generally commensalistic, but it could be more complicated if the predation of crab embryos observed in the laboratory is confirmed under natural conditions.Contribution No. 755 from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Gloucester Point, Virginia, USA.  相似文献

Jassa herdmani (Walker 1893), a tube-building amphipod typical of hard substrates, was found in large densities on shipwrecks from the Belgian part of the North Sea, in association with the hydrozoan Tubularia indivisa. In this area, shipwrecks only represent the source of hard substrates in an environment dominated by soft sediments. Nevertheless, the long-distance dispersal of Jassa species has never been investigated. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis of dispersal with currents, by investigating the behaviour of J. herdmani in the laboratory. Size distribution revealed that newly released juveniles (<1 mm) predominated throughout the year and the lower frequency of the size class 1–3 mm indicates a high mortality or a dispersal at this life stage. Individuals of J. herdmani may initiate actively the transport by tidal or surface currents by swimming to the surface of the water or by floating at the surface, as suggested by behaviours noted in the laboratory. The reaction of the amphipods to a current was investigated in the laboratory. We could not detect any sexual function associated with drifting and there was also no preponderance of a size class in the drifting individuals. When testing different substrates, we observed a significant influence of the substrate type on the frequency at which drifting occurred: J. herdmani showed a better adherence on T. indivisa compared to other substrates. Finally, the amphipod showed also a preference for its host compared to other substrates, which suggests a possible detection mechanism.  相似文献

The potential activity of nitrate reductase was determined in uni-algal cultures in the laboratory and in natural marine phytoplankton assemblages. In the laboratory bioassays, distinct differences in nitrate reductase activity were observed in iron replete versus depleted cultures for Emiliania huxleyi, Isochrysis galbana and Tetraselmis sp. Cells from iron-depleted cultures had 15 to 50 percent lower enzyme activity than those from iron-replete cultures. Upon addition of iron, nitrate reductase activity was enhanced in depleted cells up to levels comparable to those of the replete cells. Bioassays in the northern North Sea conducted in 1993, under low iron conditions, demonstrated similar results. Upon addition of 2.5 nM iron, a distinct enhancement, to a maximum of three times, of nitrate reductase activity was observed within 32 h after addition. Therefore, iron can stimulate nitrate reductase activity. In spite of the clean techniques used, some nitrate reductase activity was always observed. Iron deficiency was shown to impair nitrate reductase activity, but it is unlikely that nitrate reduction would cease completely.  相似文献

Oysters Isognomon alatus containing high concentrations of Zn, Cu, Pb and Cd were collected from the Sepang Besar River, and transferred to the Sepang Kecil River where the native oysters contain low metal concentrations. Concentrations of heavy metals in oysters were measured monthly over six months. The concentrations of all metals decreased significantly (p<0.05) for Cd 87%, Pb 83%, Cu 78%, and Zn 59%. In addition, metal depuration in oysters was investigated under laboratory conditions. Oysters were exposed to 100?µg?g?1 of metals for two weeks followed by one week of depuration. Our studies suggest that metals in oysters tend to be lost in the order, Cd>Pb>Cu>Zn. A comparison between laboratory and field data showed that depuration of metals under the laboratory conditions is significantly faster than in the field.  相似文献

Predators can have significant nonlethal effects on prey by modifying prey behaviour through chemically mediated interactions. We examined behavioural responses of wood frog (Ranasylvatica) and American toad (Bufoamericanus) tadpoles to both direct and indirect chemical signals associated with a predatory odonate (Anaxjunius). In laboratory trials, tadpoles of both species responded strongly to water conditioned with Anax nymphs by decreasing foraging rates, becoming immobile, and moving away from the stimulus. The responses to water conditioned with starved Anax versus Anax that fed on conspecific tadpoles did not differ significantly; these results suggest that tadpoles rely primarily on direct signals to detect odonates. Rana did not respond to water conditioned with conspecific tissue extracts, while Bufo responded with behaviours that were indistinguishable from those of tadpoles exposed to Anax chemicals. In a field experiment, the responses of R. sylvatica tadpoles to Anax chemicals were similar to those of tadpoles observed in the laboratory. Collectively, our data indicate that tadpoles of both species use chemical cues to assess predation risk from other community members. Tadpoles can selectively distinguish members who pose a threat, and only evacuate food patches or reduce foraging rates when in danger. The natural depuration or bioelimination of l37Cs was investigated in Mytilus galloprovincialis under contaminated field and laboratory conditions. The depuration result represented by a single component and biological half‐life was found to be 63 days under Chernobyl condition during 1986–1987. On the other hand, the biological half‐life of 137Cs were found in the range 19.7–27.1 days in the laboratory experiment. The bioelimination process was also found biphasic and dependent of temperature at 5°C and 13°C under laboratory conditions. The results obtained in the contaminated field and the laboratory are not comparable in the mussels.  相似文献

The red alga Portieria hornemannii (Lyngbye) Silva was selected to test the effects of enhanced nutrient availability on the production of carbon-based secondary metabolites, because of its notable site-to-site variation in monoterpene production. On Guam, the major secondary metabolite produced by this alga is ochtodene, a cyclic monoterpene. Quantitative high-performance liquid-chromatography analysis of the extracts of P. hornemannii collected from six sites on Guam showed that both ochtodene and triglyceride concentrations differed significantly among sites. Internal nitrogen and phosphorus content of the algae did not correlate with the observed variation in chemistry. Experimental enhancement of N-alone, P-alone or N + P in the field for 5 wk failed to induce a significant change in ochtodene concentrations in the alga, while triglyceride concentrations increased significantly in the N + P treatment. Ochtodene and triglyceride concentrations did not change among similar treatments in shaded (18 d) and unshaded (11 d) fertilization experiments conducted in the laboratory. Variation in ochtodene concentrations in P. hornemannii cannot be attributed to N and P availability; however, the decrease in ochtodene and triglyceride concentrations during the shaded laboratory experiment suggests that light may be a factor influencing monoterpene biosynthesis. The difference in ochtodene concentration between the initial and final sets of field controls collected for the unshaded laboratory experiment suggests that temporal variation might also contribute to differences observed among the algae at the different sites. We studied assimilation efficiencies of the temperate-zone intertidal fish Cebidichthys violaceus (Girard, 1854) fed in the laboratory on each of the following species of macroalgae: Spongomorpha coalita (Chlorophyta), Ulva lobata (Chlorophyta), Iridaea flaccida (Rhodophyta) and Porphyra perforata (Rhodophyta). Together, these 4 algae make up over 75% of the natural summer diet of C. violaceus. Assimilation efficiency was calculated by proximate organic analysis of food and feces; the amount of ash in food and feces was used as a standard. Depending on the algal species, the fish assimilated 43 to 81% of the protein, 21 to 44% of the lipid, 45 to 62% of the carbohydrate and 31 to 52% of all three classes of organic material combined. These data are the first results showing that a temperate-zone marine fish can assimilate macroalgal constituents. Protein, carbohydrate and total organic material were absorbed more efficiently from rhodophytes than from chlorophytes. Conversely, lipid was absorbed more efficiently from chlorophytes than from rhodophytes. These results are compared with previous work showing that C. violaceus in nature eats more chlorophytes than rhodophytes, but in laboratory preference tests prefers rhodophytes to chlorophytes.  相似文献

Populations of over 100 colonies of Capnella gaboensis Verseveldt, 1977 at each of four study sites in Sydney Harbour were monitored for recruitment, survival, and mortality from October 1982 to November 1984. Larval settlement and survival were observed in the laboratory. Successful in situ larval settlement of C. gaboensis was estimated to be in the order of 0.26%. The predominant mode of recruitment was from larvae. Asexual recruitment resulted only from the fission of large colonies, and not by fragmentation or by stolon development. Mortality of newly settled C. gaboensis in situ during their first year was estimated to be around 99.75%. For colonies more than 1 yr old, mortality was highest amongst juveniles. After colonies reach about 3 yr of age, they have a high expectation of further life, until they reach about 15 yr of age; life expectancy declines each year thereafter. These estimates of life expectancy are based upon the conservative assumption that the largest colonies are about 20 yr old. The likely causes of mortality for colonies in the field are: predation by urchins, ovulids and nudibranchs; abrasion by kelp; and overgrowth by algae and sponges. The causes of mortality for larvae and recruits in the field, however, can be predicted only on the basis of laboratory studies and observations of field conditions.  相似文献

Resistance to heavy metals is a potentially important trait for introduced marine organisms, facilitating their successful invasion into disturbed natural communities. We conducted laboratory and field experiments to examine differential resistance to copper (Cu) between two source populations of the introduced bryozoan Bugula neritina, originating from a polluted (Port Kembla Harbour, NSW, Australia) and an unpolluted (Botany Bay, NSW, Australia) environment. A laboratory toxicity test was conducted to test the relative resistance of B. neritina recruits from the two sources, by measuring the attachment success, survival and growth of individuals exposed to a range of Cu concentrations (0, 25, 50 and 100 μg l−1 Cu). Upon completion, reciprocal transplantation of the colonies to the original polluted and unpolluted locations was carried out to assess ongoing survival and growth of colonies in the field. B. neritina colonies originating from the polluted Port Kembla Harbour had increased resistance to Cu relative to populations from an unpolluted part of Botany Bay. There appeared to be a cost associated with increased metal tolerance. In the laboratory, Botany Bay recruits displayed significantly higher growth in control treatments and significantly poorer growth at 100 μg l−1 Cu with respect to Port Kembla Harbour individuals, which showed unusually uniform and low growth irrespective of Cu concentration. No difference in attachment success or post-metamorphic survival was observed between populations. Field transplantation showed copper resistance in Port Kembla Harbour colonies constituted an advantage in polluted but not benign environments. The findings of this study provide evidence of the benefits to invasive species of pollution tolerance and suggest that human disturbance can facilitate the establishment and spread of invasive species in marine systems.  相似文献
