Four zooplankton species, three Arthropoda and one Chaetognata, from the Sea of Japan were analyzed in 1984 for eight major and fifteen trace elements, mainly by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Major and trace element contents on a dry weight basis varied little within a factor of 3.7, except for Ca (a factor of 5.7) among the four species. A log-log linearity with a slope of almost-1 was observed between mean oceanic residence time calculated from the mean dissolved river-water input R and the concentration factor with respect to mean seawater concentration (CF SW )for each species. The products of R and CF SW were nearly constant within a factor of 10, except for Br and Sb over seven orders of variation of CF SW for each zooplankton species. It demonstrates a new regularity in trace element contents of marine zooplankton species. This relationship leads to the conclusion that the concentration factors of elements for these zooplankton species with respect to elements for these zooplankton species with respect to mean dissolved river-water concentration (CF RW )are nearly constant within a factor of 10 with average values of 2.98 to 3.43 in logarithm.  相似文献

While there are numerous reports of predator-induced morphological defenses for freshwater zooplankton, freshwater larvae, and benthic marine animals, a literature search revealed no reports of predator-induced morphological defenses for marine zooplankton. Rarity of predator-induced morphological defenses in marine zooplankton would imply a difference in predation risks compared to those experienced by freshwater organisms and benthic marine adults, whereas the presence of such plasticity in defenses would imply that risks are modified by developmental responses. This study reports a predator-induced change in defenses and vulnerability of a marine planktonic larva. Specifically, when reared in the presence of zoea larvae of Cancer spp., veliger larvae of the intertidal snail Littorina scutulata developed significantly smaller shell apertures and rounder shells than did cohort veligers reared in the absence of predator cues. Pairwise predation trials demonstrated that veligers reared with caged zoeas throughout development had greater survival than predator-naive veligers during short-term exposure to zoeas. The development of predator-induced morphological defenses by some marine larvae introduces a range of testable hypotheses on developmental plasticity that reduces vulnerability of planktonic larvae and other marine zooplankton to predators.  相似文献

Cytometric quantification of cellular fluorescence upon cleavage of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) is presented as a sensitive and rapid technique to assess phytoplankton metabolic activity during exposure to prolonged darkness of 10 to 12 d. Two distinct types of metabolic response to darkness are distinguished: Type I cells (Brachiomonas submarina, Pavlova lutheri, Chrysochromulina hirta) adapt to prolonged darkness by reducing their metabolism to a lower level of activity (∼10% of initial in P. lutheri, C. hirta, ∼0.5% in B. submarina) within few days, whereas Type II cells (Prymnesium parvum, Bacteriastrum sp., unidentified pennate diatom) continue with unchanged activity. Type I cells were able to maintain their initial cell abundance and commenced rapid cell growth upon re-illumination after 12 d of darkness. Among Type II cells, diatoms were able to maintain cell abundance and growth capacity as well, whereas P. parvum was not. Type I cells are expected to exhibit competitive advantages in environments with frequent or long dark periods. Bacterivory further supports dark survival in C. hirta. Arylsulfatase activity in marine sediments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Arylsulfatase activity and arylsulfatase-producing bacteria were estimated in sediment samples collected from 3 different biotopes: marine, estuarine, and mangrove. No direct relationship could be established between activity and the number of bacteria at any station. In general, clayey sediments always harboured more arylsulfatase producers than sandy sediments, irrespective of salinity variations. Of the 3 biotopes investigated, the mangrove area exhibited maximum activity. The enzyme showed two pH optima, one at 6.2, the other at 9.0. The optimum substrate concentration was 12x10-4M. Higher substrate concentrations tended to inhibit arylsulfatase activity. The recovery of added phenolphthalein was maximum only at pH 6.2; KCN, Na2So4, and KH2Po4 inhibited enzyme activity by 65.5, 46.8 and 37.5%, respectively. More than one type of arylsulfatase may be present in marine sediments; further studies on the role of arylsulfatases are required, since arylsulfatases have been reported to bear on the formation and hardening of exoskeletons in marine forms.  相似文献

The metabolic rates (oxygen uptake, ammonia excretion, phosphate excretion) of epipelagic marine zooplankton have been expressed as a function of body mass (dry, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus weights) and habitat temperature, using the multiple-regression method. Zooplankton data used for this analysis are from phylogenetically mixed groups (56 to 143 species, representing 7 to 8 phyla, body mass range: 6 orders of magnitude) from various latitudes (habitat temperature range:-1.4° to 30°C). The results revealed that 84 to 96% of variation in metabolic rates is due to body mass and habitat temperature. Among the various body-mass units, the best correlation was provided by carbon and nitrogen units for all three metabolic rates. Oxygen uptake, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion are all similar in terms of body-mass effect, but differ in terms of temperature effect. With carbon or nitrogen body-mass units, calculated Q10 values are 1.82 to 1.89 for oxygen uptake, 1.91 to 1.93 for ammonia excretion and 1.55 for phosphate excretion. The effects of body mass and habitat temperature on the metabolic quotients (O:N, N:P, O:P) are insignificant. The present results for oxygen-uptake rate vs body mass do not differ significantly from those reported for general poikilotherms by Hemmingsen and for crustaceans by Ivleva at a comparable temperature (20°C). The importance of a body-mass measure for meaningful comparison is suggested by the evaluation of the habitat-temperature effect between mixed taxonomic groups and selected ones. Considering the dominant effects of body mass and temperature on zooplankton metabolic rates, the latitudinal gradient of community metabolic rate for net zooplankton in the ocean is estimated, emphasizing the non-parallelism between community metabolic rates and the standing stock of net zooplankton.  相似文献

In an experimental study on the effect of parrotfish (probably Scarus taeniurus) grazing on the structure of benthic reef communities, fishes in densities of 0.6 to 1.5 parrotfish per m2 or 9 to 17 g wet weight of fish per m2 of feeding surface were found to have an optimum effect, resulting in the greatest benthic species richness and biomass on 2-dimensional surfaces. The presence of refuges (3-dimensional habitats), however, has a greater impact on bemthic community structure (number of species and biomass) than does just the density of parrotfish in such an experimental system. Coral recruitment is enhanced by the presence of refuges and, like coralline algae, is more successful under increased grazing pressure. These optimum densities of parrotfishes relate well to observed field densities where, in a collection from a Hawaiian patch reef, there were 1.1 fish or 10.8 g wet weight of parrotfish per square meter of collection area. The success of coralline algae and corals under high grazing pressure may have important consequences for the stability and structure of modern coral reefs.  相似文献

Thirty species of temperate-zone sponges representative of all orders of the Demospongiae have been tested for antibacterial activity. The results indicate the following: that a higher percentage of temperate than tropical species produced active extracts (87% as opposed to 58%); that sponge extracts more frequently inhibited the growth of marine bacteria than they did non-marine bacteria (76.5% compared to 56%); that 46.5% of the extracts tested inhibited growth of Gram-negative bacteria while only 6.5% inhibited growth of Gram-positive bacteria. There is no obvious correlation between incidence of antibacterial activity and latitude of occurrence, systematic group or growth form of the sponge. It is suggested that antibacterial agents produced by sponges may have a role in enhancing the efficiency with which sponges retain bacterial food.  相似文献

Herbivorous zooplankton species (Calanus plumchrus, Paracalanus parvus and Euphausia pacifica) and carnivorous species (Parathemisto pacifica and Pleurobrachia pileus) collected from Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, Canada, were maintained in the laboratory under fed and starved conditions. Respiration rate and excretion rates of ammonia and inorganic phosphate were measured successively on the same batch populations of each species in different feeding conditions. Respiration rate remained at a constant level or increased during the feeding experiment but decreased progressively in starved individuals. Herbivorous, but not carnivorous, species showed a rapid decrease in both excretion rates for the first few days of an experiment irrespective of feeding conditions. However, the general level of excretion rates of fed specimens was higher than that of starved ones. The O:N, N:P and O:P ratios were calculated from respiration, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion and discussed in relation to metabolic substrates of animals during the experiment. A marked difference was shown in the O:N ratio between fed hervivores (>16) and fed carnivores (7 to 19), suggesting highly protein-oriented metabolism in the latter. One unknown factor causing variation in excretion rates is speculated to be the physiological stress on animals during sampling from the field. It is suggested that the laboratory measurement of realistic excretion rates of zooplankton is difficult owing to their large fluctuations, but this is not the case with respiration rate.  相似文献

The biomarker approach has been used for 25 years to study the environmental quality of marine, brackish and freshwater ecosystems. Biomarkers may indicate health status and can be applied to organisms of all zoological phyla by destructive or non destructive methods. For 5 years we have been using this approach in zooplankton to detect ecotoxicological alterations at low levels of the food chain due to contaminants. Here we review our approach to validate and apply biomarker techniques in zooplankton. We discuss advantages, limitations, some results and future research. We indicate that biomarkers in zooplankton can be used as new indices of trophic status and ecological integrity of Italian marine coastal and lagoon environments, to be included among the tools specified by Italian law D.Lgs. 152/2006.  相似文献

In our field study we analyzed the C and H isotopic and biochemical (C, N, P, protein, lipid, carbohydrate) composition of the jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (collected from the Gulf of Trieste in 1985 to 1986) and its presumed diet-net zooplankton. The mean 13C (-18.8) and D (-58.4) ratios of P. noctiluca showed enrichment in heavy isotopes relative to net zooplankton (2 for carbon and 30 for hydrogen). Both the jellyfish and net zooplankton were characterized by a linear correlation between 13C and D. C. N, P, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate contents of P. noctiluca were low on a dry weight basis as compared to net zooplankton. Significantly lower C:N and C:P ratios were found in jellyfish indicating a greater loss of carbon relative to nitrogen and phosphorus along the passage to a higher trophic level. Isotopic and biochemical evidence indicate that, though collected in nearshore waters, P. noctiluca depended on autochthonous marine organic matter.  相似文献

This paper redefines a construct previously used to model phytoplankton—zooplankton interactions in such a way as to permit the use of measurable quantities as contruct coefficients. The new construct can use unaltered values of the half-saturation constant for zooplankton grazing on total available food (ks) and the minimum food concentration necessary to stimulate effective feeding (BMIN) reported in the literature. Typical values for these coefficients are 0.1–15 and 0.016–0.19, respectively.  相似文献

苏州城市河道水情复杂,氮磷浓度较高,属于重污染的滞流水体.通过对试验区南园水系为期1a的调查研究表明:该河段共有浮游动物33种,其中原生动物4种,轮虫类24种,枝角类4种,桡足类1种.各河段浮游动物年平均密度为678 ind·L-1,生物量为56.028 mg·L-1.从种类数来看,轮虫类大于原生动物大于枝角类大于桡足类.从密度看,全年平均以轮虫最多,其次为原生动物,桡足类最少.从生物量看,以枝角类最高,桡足类次之,原生动物最少.从季节变化来看,春夏季较多,秋冬季较少.优势种为轮虫类和枝角类,这些种类极耐有机污染,耐低溶氧.在苏州古城区重污染河道中,浮游动物的总量与水体理化指标及浮游植物的数量等均没有线性相关性(差异显著,p<0.05),这可能与苏州城市河道污染较重有关.城市河道特殊的水域环境决定了浮游动物种群的形成、演变及其发展都有其特殊性.探讨了重污染的城市河道的浮游动物种类组成特点,提出了控制某些优势种群发展的设想,为改善河道水环境提供了理论依据.  相似文献

Measurement of a respiratory control ratio is deemed very useful in determination of energy balance in respiration. We have defined and computed a control ratio as the ratio of the rate of oxygen consumption in vivo to the calculated maximum rate of oxygen consumption in vitro as measured by enzymatic electron transport rates. In order for a control ratio to serve a useful purpose in calculating in situ oxygen consumption in a water parcel, the ratio must be fairly constant. Our results indicated that this is precisely so in healthy cultures of the 9 species of phytoplankton studied. The data presented in this communication further point towards the potential for making reasonable estimates of phytoplankton oxygen consumption in an ocean water parcel by directly utilizing in vitro electron transport activity measurements.  相似文献

Herring (Clupea harengus L.) and rainbow trout (Salmo gairdnerii) fed frozen-thawed zooplankton for 7 days assimilated more than 90% of the dry matter in the zooplankton consumed. Less than 5% of the total lipid ingested, largely wax esters, was excreted in the faeces. Faecal lipids from both the herring and the trout, especially the latter, were rich in wax esters and free fatty alcohols. Faecal fatty alcohols were enriched in 22:1 and deficient in 16:0 and 16:1 alcohols compared to zooplankton fatty alcohols. The growth of rainbow trout fed frozen-thawed zooplankton over 3 months was about one-half of that of trout fed commercial pellets. The fish fed on zooplankton appeared normal and were more pigmented than the fish fed on commercial pellets.  相似文献

采用室内受控生态系统进行实验.采用于桥水库原水接种后,人工设置营养盐质量浓度梯度,模拟富营养化程度不同的水体,以研究浮游动物的生长情况,及其控制藻类生长的作用.使用SPSS统计软件进行数据分析.结果显示:过高的营养盐浓度,可能会对轮虫的生长产生抑制作用,而甲壳类动物的总数量基本由营养盐质量浓度决定.在四个营养盐质量浓度梯度下,浮游动物与藻类之间均存在一定的显著或极显著相关关系,说明浮游动物均能够发挥一定的控藻作用.当营养盐ρ(TN)=3mg·L-1、ρ(TP)=0.02mg·L-1左右,浮游动物的控藻作用最明显.当营养盐质量浓度过高时,浮游动物的控藻作用受影响.  相似文献

Carbon-isotope ratio gradients in western arctic zooplankton   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Zooplankton from 87 stations in the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort Seas sampled in 1985, 1986 and 1987 showed a geographic gradient in stable carbon-isotope ratios (13C). The zooplankton most depleted in 13C were found in the central and eastern Beaufort Sea and those most enriched were from the Bering and Chukchi Seas. Average 13C values ranged from-20.9 to-26.7 for copepods and from-19.4 to-25.1 for euphausiids. Euphausiids show a minimum of 1.0 enrichment relative to copepods throughout the study area. Relative biomasses of the major zooplankton taxa varied significantly across the Alaskan Beaufort Sea in October 1986, with euphausiids dominating in the west and copepods in the east. These differences in taxonomic composition affected the weighted 13C values for total zooplankton and may produce an even more pronounced geographic gradient in zooplankton 13C than that found within a single taxon. The bowhead whale Balaena mysticetus migrates between wintering areas in the Bering Sea and summering areas in the Beaufort Sea and feeds over this geographic range. The zooplankton 13C gradient is the probable source of 13C oscillations found along the baleen plates of this planktivore.  相似文献

Downwardly directed light-traps were used by night, over seagrass and coral sand to investigate the existence and significance of nocturnal peaks in phototactic zooplankton. Samples each half-hour from sunset to sunrise showed that small invertebrates, mostly copepods, were trapped in large numbers once or twice a night. Each period of high catches lasted only 1 to 2 h and was often associated with periods of failing natural light (evening twilight, moonset). This pattern and its variations are explained in terms of nocturnal vertical migration, in which plankton move towards light in response to decreasing light intensity, move away from light in response to increasing light intensity, and disperse at constant light intensity. 采用室外现场实验和室内受控生态系统实验相结合的方法,研究了富营养化水体中浮游动物对藻类生长的控制作用。对浮游动物与藻类的计数与测量数据,利用SPSS统计软件进行了方差分析(LSD多重比较法)和相关性分析。实验结果显示,总磷含量比总氮含量对浮游动物生长的影响更大。浮游动物与藻类之间呈现显著或极显著相关关系,说明浮游动物群体,尤其甲壳类群体,在适当条件下对藻类群体以及其中的蓝藻有一定的控制作用。适当的鱼类密度下,浮游动物能够起有效的控藻作用,但鱼类密度过高会抑制该作用。底泥在生态系统中起重要作用,能够影响浮游动物对藻类的摄食力。  相似文献

Kinetic studies on the NADP-linked glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity in 8 species of marine phytoplankton have been carried out. The pH optima, linearity of reactions, apparent energies of activation, and apparent K m values for NADPH, NH 4 >+ and -ketoglutarate were determined. Based on these data, an accurate, sensitive enzyme assay procedure is presented which was successfully tested on shipboard during a recent cruise in an upwelling region. Preliminary studies on inhibition and activation of the NADP-linked GDH activity have also been carried out. In addition to NADP-linked GDH activity, NAD-linked GDH activity was discovered in certain species of phytoplankton. The possible physiological roles of NAD-and NADP-linked GDH enzymes are discussed.Contribution No. 911 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington.
