Mechanisms that can influence the tolerance of hypoxia in brackish waters were studied in resting and fed crabs, Carcinus maenas, at 15?°C. Mortality, blood oxygenation, acid-base status and lactate concentration were analysed in fed crabs held in full-strength normoxic seawater (32.5‰?S) and then transferred for 24?h to a partial pressure of oxygen (Po2) of 3?kPa (1.4?mg?l?1) and various salinities (17, 12.5, 10, 8‰?S). At salinity levels >10‰, fed crabs tolerated Po2 values as low as 3?kPa in the ambient water and 0.5?kPa in their arterial blood for 24?h without switching to anaerobic metabolism. Only below 10‰?S did their blood-lactate content rise, leading to their death despite the fact that their blood O2-content was twice the control value measured in full-strength normoxic seawater and their blood Po2 did not decrease below values recorded at higher salinity levels. Addition of CO2 to 8‰?S water (CO2 partial pressure increasing from 0.1 to 0.3?kPa) decreased blood-lactate production and mortality, suggesting that at 10‰?S impairment of the O2 supply is limited by an excessive blood O2-affinity. The results are discussed in terms of the distribution (?10‰?S) of C. maenas along salinity gradients in estuaries and bays.  相似文献

As part of the evaluation of fluxes between the water column and a rich benthic community of the Dover Strait (Eastern English Channel), laboratory measurements of oxygen consumption were carried out on a common ophiurid, Ophiothrix fragilis (Abildgaard), from February 1993 to February 1995. The mean O2-consumption rate was evaluated at 0.31 mg O2 g−1 h−1 (ash-free dry weight). Simultaneous measurements of O2 consumption and CO2 production using the pH-alkalinity method revealed an average respiratory quotient of 0.69 proved suitable for converting oxygen demand to carbon flux. A seasonal trend in respiration data was demonstrated by sinusoidal curves fitted to O2-uptake and CO2-release data as a function of time. The influence on respiration rate of two seasonal parameters (temperature and food availability) is discussed; linear regression indicated a highly significant relationship between O2 consumption (or CO2 production) and temperature; both O2-consumption and CO2-production rates decreased with starvation. The average O:N ratio was estimated at 8.46, close to the theoretical value when proteins constitute the catabolic substrate. The annual carbon respired by the O. fragilis community examined and the estimated annual primary production by phytoplankton indicate that the respiration of the O. fragilis community could supply 35% of phytoplankton carbon requirements. This paper describes a method which utilizes 14C-labelled glucose for measuring the assimilation and mineralization of dissolved organic compounds in the sea. Incubation is carried out in 500 ml conic flasks, in darkness, at a temperature similar to that of the in-situ sampling levels. Direct trapping of CO2 respired is performed in a scintillation vial, with an efficiency of 92% over a period of 4 h. The hyamin, utilized to trap the CO2, excites the scintillating liquid in the presence of CO2; the respiration data must then be corrected by a factor of 0.62. When HA Millipore filters are used for filtration, they quench assimilation values and the results must be corrected by a factor of 1.06. The reproducibility of the described method is good. Some parameters have been calculated: total heterotrophic activity, assimilation rate, respiration rate, bacterian yield, and the turn-over time of substrate in the water.  相似文献

Accumulation and binding of cadmium in the tissues of the shore crabCarcinus maenas (L.) were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. The relation between the physiological condition of individual crabs and their ability to transport cadmium from haemolymph to hepatopancreas was specifically addressed. Cadmium was removed from the haemolymph with a half-life of approximately 10 h, and half of the cadmium removed from the haemolymph was taken up in the hepatopancreas. The efficiency with which individual crabs transported cadmium from the haemolymph to the hepatopancreas was strongly related to physiological parameters, such as concentrations of calcium and magnesium in the hepatopancreas and haemolymph volume and haemolymph protein concentration. The transport of cadmium from the haemolymph to the hepatopancreas was saturated in crabs exposed to more than 2 to 4 mg Cd l–1 in the sea water. In the hepatopancreas of unexposed crabs, cadmium was bound mainly in the insoluble tissue fraction (40%) and in the protein fraction with a molecular weight of approximately 6000 D (50%). Exposure to 0.25 to 1.5 mg Cd l–1 for 2 w led to dose-dependent increases of the amounts of cadmium bound in the high-molecular weight protein fraction and in the insoluble tissue fraction. Modes of internal cadmium transport and accumulation in tissues and variability in physiological parameters are discussed.  相似文献

Anthropogenic CO2 emissions are acidifying the world’s oceans. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that ocean acidification can impact survival, growth, development and physiology of marine invertebrates. Here, we tested the impact of long-term (up to 16 months) and trans-life-cycle (adult, embryo/larvae and juvenile) exposure to elevated pCO2 (1,200 μatm, compared to control 400 μatm) on the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis. Female fecundity was decreased 4.5-fold when acclimated to elevated pCO2 for 4 months during reproductive conditioning, while no difference was observed in females acclimated for 16 months. Moreover, adult pre-exposure for 4 months to elevated pCO2 had a direct negative impact on subsequent larval settlement success. Five to nine times fewer offspring reached the juvenile stage in cultures using gametes collected from adults previously acclimated to high pCO2 for 4 months. However, no difference in larval survival was observed when adults were pre-exposed for 16 months to elevated pCO2. pCO2 had no direct negative impact on juvenile survival except when both larvae and juveniles were raised in elevated pCO2. These negative effects on settlement success and juvenile survival can be attributed to carry-over effects from adults to larvae and from larvae to juveniles. Our results support the contention that adult sea urchins can acclimate to moderately elevated pCO2 in a matter of a few months and that carry-over effects can exacerbate the negative impact of ocean acidification on larvae and juveniles.  相似文献

Heart beats of unrestrained Carcinus maenas L. have been recorded by means of aspiration electrodes. The heart rate shows a clear dependence upon the oxygen content of the sea water under otherwise constant conditions. There is a high degree of correlation between heart rate and oxygen concentration in the range between 0 cm3 and ca. 6 cm3 O2/I sea water. From this point upwards no further dependence could be found. Very low (beneath 0.5 cm3 O2/I water) and very high (over 12 cm3 O2/I water) concentrations lead to arrhythmia and often to long lasting intervals in the heart beats. It is suggested that this correlation is due to the oxygen-dependent excitability of the neurones generating the beats in the neurogenic hearts of crustaceans.  相似文献

Notwithstanding the great importance of the salinity factor in the marine environment, the knowledge of influence of salinity on growth of marine benthic algae is very limited. Rate of growth (mg, cm2) and O2 output of the intertidal red algaPorphyra umbilicalis from Helgoland, North Sea, were measured during a 3 week culture in 3 different salinities (1/2-, 1- and 2-concentrated artificial sea water; Table 1). Under hypertonic conditions (2-concentrated sea water) growth rate and photosynthesis rate were depressed, compared to values obtained in normal concentrated sea water. Under hypotonic conditions (1/2-concentrated sea water), growth expressed in mg was the same as in normal concentrated sea water, or higher when expressed in cm3. Rate of O2 output was almost unaltered in one of the two experiments, lowered in the other. Cell size increased at higher salinity, while swelling of cell walls and intercellular substances as well as the intensity of colouring decreased with salinity. The discrepancies between growth and photosynthesis under hypotonic conditions cannot be completely explained by the observed influences of salinity on morphological structures (cell size, swelling of cell substances). Detailed studies on the time course of photosynthesis and respiration rates, and preparation of a metabolic balance for the algae are necessary.  相似文献

Surprisingly little is known about potential effects of ocean acidification on krill of the Northern Hemisphere as ecologically very important food web component. Sub-adult individuals of the northern Atlantic krill species Nyctiphanes couchii (caught at Austevoll near Bergen, Norway, in January 2013) were exposed in the laboratory to four different levels of pCO2 (430, 800, 1,100, and 1,700 µatm) for 5 weeks in order to assess potential changes in a set of biological response variables. Survival decreased and the frequency of moulting-related deaths increased with increasing pCO2. Survival was considerably reduced at relatively high pCO2 of 1,700 µatm and tended to be negatively affected at 1,100 µatm pCO2. However, the experimental results show no significant effects of pCO2 on inter-moult period and growth at pCO2 levels below 1,100 µatm. No differences in length measurements of the carapace and uropod were observed across pCO2 levels, indicating no effect of changing carbonate chemistry on the morphology of those calciferous parts of the exoskeleton. The results suggest that sub-adult N. couchii may not suffer dramatically from predicted near-future changes in pCO2. However, potential detrimental effects on the moulting process and associated higher mortality at 1,100 µatm pCO2 cannot be excluded. Further experiments are needed in order to investigate whether early life stages of N. couchii show a different sensitivity to elevated sea water pCO2 and whether those results are transferable to other krill species of the Northern Hemisphere.  相似文献

Acidification of the World’s oceans may directly impact reproduction, performance and shell formation of marine calcifying organisms. In addition, since shell production is costly and stress in general draws on an organism’s energy budget, shell growth and stability of bivalves should indirectly be affected by environmental stress. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a combination of warming and acidification leads to increased physiological stress (lipofuscin accumulation and mortality) and affects the performance [shell growth, shell breaking force, condition index (Ci)] of young Mytilus edulis and Arctica islandica from the Baltic Sea. We cultured the bivalves in a fully-crossed 2-factorial experimental setup (seawater (sw) pCO2 levels “low”, “medium” and “high” for both species, temperature levels 7.5, 10, 16, 20 and 25 °C for M. edulis and 7.5, 10 and 16 °C for A. islandica) for 13 weeks in summer. Mytilus edulis and A. islandica appeared to tolerate wide ranges of sw temperature and pCO2. Lipofuscin accumulation of M. edulis increased with temperature while the Ci decreased, but shell growth of the mussels only sharply decreased while its mortality increased between 20 and 25 °C. In A. islandica, lipofuscin accumulation increased with temperature, whereas the Ci, shell growth and shell breaking force decreased. The pCO2 treatment had only marginal effects on the measured parameters of both bivalve species. Shell growth of both bivalve species was not impaired by under-saturation of the sea water with respect to aragonite and calcite. Furthermore, independently of water temperatures shell breaking force of both species and shell growth of A. islandica remained unaffected by the applied elevated sw pCO2 for several months. Only at the highest temperature (25 °C), growth arrest of M. edulis was recorded at the high sw pCO2 treatment and the Ci of M. edulis was slightly higher at the medium sw pCO2 treatment than at the low and high sw pCO2 treatments. The only effect of elevated sw pCO2 on A. islandica was an increase in lipofuscin accumulation at the high sw pCO2 treatment compared to the medium sw pCO2 treatment. Our results show that, despite this robustness, growth of both M. edulis and A. islandica can be reduced if sw temperatures remain high for several weeks in summer. As large body size constitutes an escape from crab and sea star predation, this can make bivalves presumably more vulnerable to predation—with possible negative consequences on population growth. In M. edulis, but not in A. islandica, this effect is amplified by elevated sw pCO2. We follow that combined effects of elevated sw pCO2 and ocean warming might cause shifts in future Western Baltic Sea community structures and ecosystem services; however, only if predators or other interacting species do not suffer as strong from these stressors.  相似文献

The impact of elevated CO2 and temperature on photosynthesis and calcification in the symbiont-bearing benthic foraminifer Marginopora vertebralis was studied. Individual specimens of M. vertebralis were collected from Heron Island on the southern Great Barrier Reef (Australia). They were maintained for 5 weeks at different temperatures (28, 32 °C) and pCO2 (400, 1,000 µatm) levels spanning a range of current and future climate-change scenarios. The photosynthetic capacity of M. vertebralis was measured with O2 microsensors and a pulse-amplitude-modulated chlorophyll (Chl) fluorometer, in combination with estimates of Chl a and Chl c 2 concentrations and calcification rates. After 5 weeks, control specimens remained unaltered for all parameters. Chlorophyll a concentrations significantly decreased in the specimens at 1,000 µatm CO2 for both temperatures, while no change in Chl c 2 concentration was observed. Photoinhibition was observed under elevated CO2 and temperature, with a 70–80 % decrease in the maximum quantum yield of PSII. There was no net O2 production at elevated temperatures in both CO2 treatments as compared to the control temperature, supporting that temperature has more impact on photosynthesis and O2 flux than changes in ambient CO2. Photosynthetic pigment loss and a decrease in photochemical efficiency are thus likely to occur with increased temperature. The elevated CO2 and high temperature treatment also lead to a reduction in calcification rate (from +0.1 to >?0.1 % day?1). Thus, both calcification and photosynthesis of the major sediment-producing foraminifer M. vertebralis appears highly vulnerable to elevated temperature and ocean acidification scenarios predicted in climate-change models.  相似文献

The physico-chemical microenvironment of larger benthic foraminifera was studied with microsensors for O2, CO2, pH, Ca2+ and scalar irradiance. Under saturating light conditions, the photosynthetic activity of the endosymbiotic algae increased the O2 up to 183% air saturation and a pH of up to 8.6 was measured at the foraminiferal shell surface. The photosynthetic CO2 fixation decreased the CO2 at the shell down to 4.7 μM. In the dark, the respiration of host and symbionts decreased the O2 level to 91% air saturation and the CO2 concentration reached up to 12 μM. pH was lowered relative to the ambient seawater pH of 8.2. The endosymbionts responded immediately to changing light conditions, resulting in dynamic changes of O2, CO2 and pH at the foraminiferal shell surface during experimentally imposed light–dark cycles. The dynamic concentration changes demonstrated for the first time a fast exchange of metabolic gases through the perforate, hyaline shell of Amphistegina lobifera. A diffusive boundary layer (DBL) limited the solute exchange between the foraminifera and the surrounding water. The DBL reached a thickness of 400–700 μm in stagnant water and was reduced to 100–300 μm under flow conditions. Gross photosynthesis rates were significantly higher under flow conditions (4.7 nmol O2 cm−3 s−1) than in stagnant water (1.6 nmol O2 cm −3 s−1), whereas net photosynthesis rates were unaffected by flow conditions. The Ca2+ microprofiles demonstrated a spatial variation in sites of calcium uptake over the foraminiferal shells. Ca2+ gradients at the shell surface showed total Ca2+ uptake rates of 0.6 to 4.2 nmol cm−2 h−1 in A. lobifera and 1.7 to 3.6 nmol cm−2 h−1 in Marginopora vertebralis. The scattering and reflection of the foraminiferal calcite shell increased the scalar irradiance at the surface up to 205% of the incident irradiance. Transmittance measurements across the calcite shell suggest that the symbionts are shielded from higher light levels, receiving approximately 30% of the incident light for photosynthesis. The high consumption of crabs (Ucides cordatus) stimulated interest in the present study on the northern coast of Brazil, which encompasses a preserved area of mangrove forest. The objective was to describe and quantify the transfer of metals from the muddy sediments to the leaves of the Rhizophora mangle, and thence the crabs and humans. The samples were collected along two transects, while samples of hair were obtained from local habitants. The pH, interstitial salinity, Eh (mV) were measured, the granulometry and mineralogical and multi-element chemical analyses were run, and the organic material determined. The sediments are silty-clayey, composed of quartz, kaolinite, iron oxides, and illite, as well as smaller portions of smectite, pyrite, halite, and high levels of SiO2 (56.5 %), Al2O3 (18.5 %), and Fe2O3 (7 %). The elements Zn, Sr, As, and Zr are concentrated in the leaves, while the bioaccumulation of Zn, Se, Sr, and As was recorded in the crabs, of which, Se is the most concentrated in the tissue of the muscles and the hepatopancreas. The concentrations of nutrient and toxic elements were similar in all age groups (hair samples), with only Hg presenting an increasing concentration between infants and adults. The highest rates of transfer were recorded for the elements Zn and Se in the crabs and Hg in leaves and hair. The accumulation of metals in the leaves and crabs reflects the chemical composition of the sediments and low rates of sediment-vegetation-crab transfer, with the exception of Hg, which accumulated in the hair.  相似文献

The reaction mechanism and pathway of the ozonation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) in aqueous solution were investigated. The removal efficiency and the variation of H2O2, Cl? formic acid, and oxalic acid were studied during the semi-batch ozonation experiments (continuous for ozone gas supply, fixed volume of water sample). The results showed that when there was no scavenger, the removal efficiency of 0.1 mmol/L 2,4,6-TCP could reach 99% within 6 min by adding 24 mg/L ozone. The reaction of molecular ozone with 2,4,6-TCP resulted in the formation of H2O2. The maximal concentration of H2O2 detected during the ozonation could reach 22.5% of the original concentration of 2,4,6-TCP. The reaction of ozone with H2O2 resulted in the generation of a lot of OH? radicals. Therefore, 2,4,6-TCP was degraded to formic acid and oxalic acid by ozone and OH? radicals together. With the inhibition of OH? radicals, ozone molecule firstly degraded 2,4,6-TCP to form chlorinated quinone, which was subsequently oxidized to formic acid and oxalic acid. Two reaction pathways of the degradation of 2,4,6-TCP by ozone and O3/OH? were proposed in this study.  相似文献

Metabolism of two abundant echinoderm species constituting 99.6% of the epibenthic megafauna in the Santa Catalina Basin, off southern California, USA was measured at 1 300 m during the 1979 “Bathyal Expedition”. Specimens of the ophiuroid Ophiophthalmus normani and the holothurian Scotoplanes globosa, collected by the submersible “Alvin”, were individually placed in respirometers, and measured in situ for O2 consumption and ammonium excretion rates. For O. normani, weight-specific O2 consumption rates decreased with increasing weight and were of comparable magnitude to rates of deep-sea and shallow-water ophiuroids; excretion rates were highly variable. Population O2 consumption and excretion rates for O. normani (estimated from size-frequency distribution, abundance, and rate regression equations) were 1 129.28 μl O2 m-2 h-1 and 27.30 nmol NH 4 + m-2 h-1. Weight-specific O2 consumption and ammonium excretion rates of S. globosa decreased with increasing weight and were of comparable magnitude to rases of shallow-water holothurians. Population O2 constimption and excretion rates of S. globosa were 1.38 μl O2 m-2 h-1 and 4.86 nmol NH 4 + m-2 h-1. Combined population O2 consumption rates for O. normani and S. globosa are of comparable magnitude to that of the sediment community and plankton in the benthic boundary layer (sediment and overlying 50 m water column) of the Santa Catalina Basin.  相似文献

Cordgrasses of the genus Spartina form dense monospecific stands worldwide, profoundly influencing the ecology of estuaries. One species, Spartina anglica, originated by allopolyploidy in the 1800s and has been particularly prolific as an invasive species worldwide. S. anglica tolerates low-lying estuarine mudflats that its progenitor species and other coastal halophytes cannot. However, very little is known of the physiology of S. anglica. In the present study, an automated flow-through respirometry system was used to quantify metabolic gas fluxes (O2, H2S, CO2, and NH3) of S. anglica rhizomes. Enhanced physiological mechanisms to transport O2 and H2S in both directions between the rhizosphere and the atmosphere were exhibited by S. anglica, but not by the native North American species S. alterniflora. These results suggest that tolerance of anoxia and H2S may assist S. anglica in colonizing extensively flooded environments. Enhanced sediment oxygenation by S. anglica may be potentially useful for phytoremediation of contaminated sediments, since microbial degradation of organic pollutants is often limited by O2 availability.  相似文献

Effects of acclimation to projected near-future ocean acidification (OA) conditions on physiology, reproduction and development were investigated in the tropical sea urchin Echinometra mathaei. Following 6 weeks in control or one of the three elevated pCO2 (pHNIST 7.5–8.1; pCO2 ~485–1,770 μatm) conditions, adult urchins exhibited a slight decline of growth in low pH treatments and moderately reduced respiration at intermediate levels. At 7 weeks, gametes from adults were used to produce larvae that were reared in their respective parental treatments. To assess whether larvae from acclimated parents are more resilient to elevated pCO2 than those not acclimated, larvae from control animals were also reared in the elevated pCO2 treatments. There was no difference in female ‘spawnability’ and oocyte size between treatments, but male spawning ability was reduced in increased pCO2 conditions. In elevated pCO2 treatments, the percentage of normal larvae and larval size decreased in the progeny of control- and elevated pCO2-acclimated parents, and arm asymmetry increased. Thus, acclimation of the parents did not make the progeny more resilient or sensitive to OA effects. Negative effects of increased pCO2 on reproduction and development may impact on recruitment and population maintenance of this species.  相似文献

Intertidal macroalgae may spend a significant part of their lives in air. During photosynthesis in air, they encounter much lower concentrations of inorganic carbon than in seawater. Because they accumulate inorganic carbon from seawater, we investigated whether they similarly accumulate it from air. We measured photosynthesis in the intertidal species Fucus vesiculosus L. during 1990 and 1991 with a gas-phase O2 electrode or CO2-exchange apparatus in air and with a liquid-phase O2 electrode in seawater. Maximum rates were rapid and similar in air and seawater regardless of the method. Tissue from seawater could carry on photosynthesis in CO2-free air, indicating that carbon was stored in the tissue. After 2 h, this store was depleted and photosynthesis ceased. Supplying CO2 in air replenished the store. Under identical conditions, terrestrial C3 and C4 species showed no evidence of this store, but a CAM (crassulacean acid metabolism) species did. However, in contrast to the CAM behavior, F. vesiculosus did not store CO2 significantly in the dark. We found a small acid-releasable pool of carbon in the tissue that disappeared as photosynthesis depleted the carbon store. However, the pool was too small to account for the total carbon stored. While CO2 was being acquired or released from the store in the light, photosynthesis was not inhibited by 21% O2. These results indicate that there are two parallel paths for the supply of CO2 to photosynthesis. The first depends on inorganic carbon in seawater or in air and supports rapid photosynthesis. The second involves CO2 slowly released from an organic intermediate. The release protects CO2 fixation from the inhibitory effects of 21% O2. Photosynthesis in F. vesiculosus thus appears to be C3-like in its rapid fixation of CO2 from a small inorganic pool into phosphoglycerate. However, it is C4-like in its pre-fixation of carbon in an organic pool in the light, and is CAM-like in its ability to slowly use this pool as a sole source of CO2. The organic pool may serve to protect photosynthetic CO2 fixation against the inhibitory effects of O2 in air and in the boundary layer in seawater. Whereas small Pagurus bernhardus (L.) occur in large numbers in the intertidal areas of rocky shores, large hermit crabs living in whelk shells are most uncommon, although they are easily collected by sublittoral dredging. Experiments were carried out to assess the salinity tolerance, and the ability to regulate body volume in a dilute medium, of both small and large hermit crabs. Large, offshore hermit crabs are significantly less tolerant of 60% sea water (100%=34 S) than small, littoral specimens. Small littoral crabs increase in weight by about 15% in the first hour in 60% sea water, but increased urine output prevents swelling thereafter; indeed, there is considerable loss in weight, presumably caused by solute loss. Large, offshore, crabs increase in weight by about 15% in the first hour, thus exhibiting a higher permeability to water than small crabs, and continue to increase in weight, since urine output is not sufficient to cope with the water load. Dissections suggest that insufficient release of urine causes the low urine output in large hermit crabs, rather than inadequate production of primary urine. Calculations indicate that the nephropores of large hermit crabs are too small to allow a sufficiently high urine output to remove a large water load, unless greater pressures are developed inside the excretory systems of large hermit crabs than occur in those of small littoral individuals. In view of the soft, flexible nature of the walls of the excretory system and abdomen of P. bernhardus, it seems unlikely that high pressures could be maintained within the excretory system. It is concluded that the stenohalinity of large, offshore hermit crabs may exclude them from the littoral zone, or may be the result of exclusion by other factors, since there will be no selective advantage for large hermit crabs in maintaining the degree of euryhalinity possessed by the small littoral crabs, if the large crabs are confined to the sublittoral zone.  相似文献

Impacts of elevated temperature and CO2 on tree growth were introduced into a statistical growth and yield model for Finnish conditions based on corresponding predictions obtained from a physiological growth model. This one-way link between models was made by means of species-specific transfer functions describing the increase in stem volume growth of trees as a function of elevated temperature and CO2, stand density and the tree's competition status in a stand of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), silver birch (Betula pendula) and Norway spruce (Picea abies). This method allows the inner dynamics of the statistical model to be followed when the impacts of temperature and CO2 elevation on tree growth are introduced into the calculation of volume growth and further allocated between diameter and height growth. In this way compatibility with previous predictions of tree growth by means of statistical models and related model systems under current climatic conditions could be retained. The performance of the statistical model with species-specific transfer functions was evaluated by comparing its predictions with corresponding predictions given by a physiological model under conditions of elevated temperature and CO2. These calculations revealed that the growth response of individual trees to elevated temperature and CO2 can be introduced into the statistical model from a physiological growth model with an outcome that results in fairly satisfactory growth responses at the stand level as well.  相似文献

Early life stages of marine crustaceans respond sensitively to elevated seawater PCO2. However, the underlying physiological mechanisms have not been studied well. We therefore investigated the effects of elevated seawater PCO2 on oxygen consumption, dry weight, elemental composition, median developmental time (MDT) and mortality in zoea I larvae of the spider crab Hyas araneus (Svalbard 79°N/11°E; collection, May 2009; hatch, December 2009). At the time of moulting, oxygen consumption rate had reached a steady state level under control conditions. In contrast, elevated seawater PCO2 caused the metabolic rate to rise continuously leading to a maximum 1.5-fold increase beyond control level a few days before moulting into the second stage (zoea II), followed by a pronounced decrease. Dry weight of larvae reared under high CO2 conditions was lower than in control larvae at the beginning of the moult cycle, yet this difference had disappeared at the time of moulting. MDT of zoea I varied between 45 ± 1 days under control conditions and 42 ± 2 days under the highest seawater CO2 concentration. The present study indicates that larval development under elevated seawater PCO2 levels results in higher metabolic costs during premoulting events in zoea I. However, H. araneus zoea I larvae seem to be able to compensate for higher metabolic costs as larval MDT and survival was not affected by elevated PCO2 levels.  相似文献
