Early life stages of marine crustaceans respond sensitively to elevated seawater PCO2. However, the underlying physiological mechanisms have not been studied well. We therefore investigated the effects of elevated seawater PCO2 on oxygen consumption, dry weight, elemental composition, median developmental time (MDT) and mortality in zoea I larvae of the spider crab Hyas araneus (Svalbard 79°N/11°E; collection, May 2009; hatch, December 2009). At the time of moulting, oxygen consumption rate had reached a steady state level under control conditions. In contrast, elevated seawater PCO2 caused the metabolic rate to rise continuously leading to a maximum 1.5-fold increase beyond control level a few days before moulting into the second stage (zoea II), followed by a pronounced decrease. Dry weight of larvae reared under high CO2 conditions was lower than in control larvae at the beginning of the moult cycle, yet this difference had disappeared at the time of moulting. MDT of zoea I varied between 45 ± 1 days under control conditions and 42 ± 2 days under the highest seawater CO2 concentration. The present study indicates that larval development under elevated seawater PCO2 levels results in higher metabolic costs during premoulting events in zoea I. However, H. araneus zoea I larvae seem to be able to compensate for higher metabolic costs as larval MDT and survival was not affected by elevated PCO2 levels.  相似文献

A mooring system consisting of an in situ fluorometer at a depth of 50 m and a time-series sediment trap at a depth of 110 m was deployed at the sediment trap site (70°11.536'S; 24°18.679'E; water depth: 300 m) in Breid Bay, Antarctica in austral summer from 28 December 1985 to 13 February 1986. Sinking particles, consisting of diatoms (mainly Thalassiosira antarctica), were analyzed for organic materials, stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Vertical fluxes of organic carbon and nitrogen were determined to be within the ranges of 12.3 to 116 mg C m-2 d-1 and 1.79 to 15.4 mg N m-2 d-1, respectively, with maxima in the middle of January 1986, after which time the organic carbon and nitrogen fluxes tended to decrease with a steep gradient. High values of 13C were found in the organic matter of the sinking particles collected before the middle of January, indicating that the organic matter was derived from the diatoms in the logarithmic phase of their growth. Increased abundance of glucose was found in the water-extractable carbohydrate, which was one of the sinking particles collected in the middle of January. This fact clearly indicated that the diatoms were no longer in the growth phase but rather in the stationary phase, because reserved glucan as well as various cellular organic materials were reportedly accumulated within the algal cells in the stationary phase. Fifteen species of protein amino acids with trace amounts of -alanine, -aminobutyric acid and ornithine were found in the sinking particles upon acid hydrolysis, but the amino acid composition of these samples had not been affected much by biological agents. The essential amino acid index was calculated for the sinking particles collected in the course of the sediment trap experiment. The indices obtained indicated that the sinking particles collected in Breid Bay were more ecologically significant than the sinking and suspended particles from deep waters.  相似文献

Snow carb Chionoecetes opilio zoea I and zoea II larvae, hatched from females in a controlled mating experiment, were reared in the laboratory at 10.1 °C and 28.0 salinity, to resolve the patterns of growth (dry weight [DW]) and change in energy reserves (triacylglycerols [TAG]) within a given moult cycle. The patterns of growth and change in TAG reserves were similar in each zoeal stage. Following hatching or a moult, the zoeae entered a phase of rapid size increase, i.e. high daily growth rates (5.5 to 12.8% DWd-1), for 1/3 to 2/5 of the duration of the moult cycle. During the same period, the zoeae accumulated TAG reserves until a maximum (TAG DW-1) was reached at the end of the phase of rapid growth. The period of high growth rates and of TAG accumulation is interpreted as the required time for the zoeae to reach a point in development [i.e. point of reserves saturation (PRS); Anger and Dawirs (1981)] where sufficient growth and energy reserves allow moulting to the next stage. Following the phase of rapid growth and TAG accumulation, the zoeae entered a phase of low daily growth rates (0 to 1% DWd-1) during which the TAG reserves decreased to a minimum at the end of the phase. Prior to, and during the moult to zoea II, a phase of negative growth was observed in the zoea I larvae. We conclude that measurement of zoeal size and TAG content, along with morphometric criteria (e.g. epidermal retraction), can be used to assess growth and nutritional condition of C. opilio zoeal stages from the sea.  相似文献

Dark survival of autotrophic, planktonic marine diatoms   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
A general ecological problem is considered: how long can a photoautotrophic microalga, incapable of producing a resting spore (stage), retain its viability in the dark following removal from the euphotic zone? Nine coastal diatoms, including some capable of producing resting spores, were kept in the dark for 90 days at 15°C, and their growth (viability) checked at periodic intervals upon reillumination. Seven of the 9 diatoms retained their viability for 90 days; generation time of illuminated cells then ranged from 2.5 to 10 days. Skeletonema costatum survived only 7 weeks of darkness. Based on the present and published observations, dark survival of this species is inversely related to temperature; it survives at least 24 weeks at 2°C, and from 1 to 4 weeks at 20°C. None of the species was observed to grow in the dark. The effects of temperature and light on dark survival, and of darkness on the chemical composition and photosynthesis following reillumination as reported in the scattered literature are evaluated. Together with the present observations, it is suggested that dark survival of photoautotrophic microalgae: (1) varies between species; (2) may be temperature dependent in some species, as in S. costatum; (3) may be prolonged by periodic illumination at subcompensation intensities for photosynthesis, as shown in Dunaliella tertiolecta. The potential ecological significance of these findings is also considered, should these in vitro results apply to natural populations.  相似文献

We examined trace metal ingestion and assimilation (Cd, Se, Zn) by the green mussel Perna viridis in a mixture of diatoms and sediment at concentrations below and above the pseudofeces production levels. Dual gamma radiotracers (109Cd, 65Zn) were used to investigate particle selection on marine diatoms and sediments. The diatom (Thalassiosira weissflogii) was radiolabeled with 109Cd, and the natural sediment was radiolabeled with 65Zn. By comparing the ratios of 109Cd:65Zn in the particle mixture, mussel tissues and pseudofeces within a short-term exposure period (35 min), the results demonstrated that the green mussels were able to selectively ingest the diatom particles at a high particle load. Efficiency of selection for nutritious particles (e.g. diatoms) increased with increasing ratio of sediments in the particle mixture. Pseudofeces contained a higher ratio of sediments relative to that in the feeding suspension. No major particle selection was observed at concentrations below the level for pseudofeces production. The assimilation of Cd, Se and Zn by the green mussels was quantified using a pulse-chase feeding technique. The assimilation of Se and Zn by the green mussels from ingested diatoms was reduced with the presence of sediment within the mussel gut, presumably due to the resorption of metals onto the sediment, leading to a quicker passage of metals through the digestive tract and a lower proportion of metals subjected to intensive digestion. In contrast, the presence of diatoms did not significantly affect metal assimilation from ingested sediment. A significant correlation between metal assimilation efficiency and metal gut passage time was also observed. Metal assimilation by the green mussels appeared to be little dependent on the particle concentration in seawater. Our study suggests that particle selection may potentially alter metal influx from ingested food sources, particularly at high particle concentrations. Selective feeding of nutritious particles, coupled with a high assimilation efficiency from these ingested particles, may increase metal influx into mussels from the dietary phase.  相似文献

Daily observations in April and May 1983 near a subsurface drifter launched in the Fladen Grounds area of the North Sea revealed that a large crop of the microflagellate Corymbellus aureus Green, producing up to 3 g C m-2 d-1, succeeded the diatoms dominating during the earlier phase of the spring bloom. The concentration of fucoxanthin was highest during the first half of May, while pigment fingerprints of high-performance liquid chromatograms of suspended matter sampled during the second half of May were dominated by 19-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, the main carotenoid of C. aureus (0.8x10-9 mg cell-1). This colonial Prymnesiophycean was described for the first time less than 10 years ago and has nerver been reported to be present in the North Sea. After 16 May the C. aureus population rapidly lost its growth potential, but the peak of the bloom in terms of cell number was found several days later (up to 9x106 cells per dm3 on 19 May). The population then started to decline; senescence was associated with decreasing pigment contents of cells. The low growth rate of copepods registered during the second half of May was probably related to the poor quality of C. aureus as copepod food: the concentration of a phaeophorbide a typically found in copepod fecal pellets was highest during the diatom phase of the spring bloom preceding the C. aureus bloom.  相似文献

The influence of light and temperature on photosynthetic rate as measured by C14O2-fixation of marine benthic diatoms was investigated, using both intact sediment samples (Marshall et al., 1973) and suspensions of diatoms harvested by a lenstissue technique (Eaton and Moss, 1966). After C14-incubation, sediment samples were filtered, burned in a sample oxidizer, and their activity determined in a liquid scintillation counter. Photosynthetic rate of mixed field populations is saturated by a light intensity of approximately 10,000 lux; at still higher light intensities no photoinhibition was found. In contrast to the mixed field populations, unialgal cultures of the benthic diatom Amphiprora alata Kütz. exhibited strong photoinhibition at higher light intensities (10,000 to 60,000 lux). Within a range of 4° to 20°C, the photosynthetic rate increased about 10%/Co. No differences in photosynthetic pattern were observed between epipelic and epipsammic species.  相似文献

Abundance and temporal distribution of viable (able to germinate) resting stage cells of planktonic diatoms in bottom sediments have been investigated almost monthly during 1989 to 1992 in Hiroshima Bay, western part of Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The abundance of viable resting stages in bottom sediments was enumerated with the extinction dilution method (most probable number method, MPN). In bottom sediments of Hiroshima Bay, dominantly distributed species and/ or genera of the diatom resting stages were Skeletonema costatum, Chaetoceros spp. and Thalassiosira spp. Viable resting stages of these diatoms were densely distributed on the orders of 103 to 106 (MPN g−1 wet sediments), and persisted in bottom sediments throughout the investigation period. Conversely, vegetative cells of these diatoms fluctuated remarkably in the water column and disappeared sporadically. Survival of the resting stages in a collected sediment sample was also determined with the MPN method, at different storage temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 °C). The survival test demonstrated that the diatom resting stages could survive in the dark for several months or years in sediments. Resting stages survived longer at the lower storage temperature, and the order of longevity was consistent within three diatoms (Chaetoceros spp. > Thalassiosira spp. > S. costatum) at each storage temperature. The present study suggests that these diatom resting stages in the coastal bottom sediments could serve as a “seed bank”, analogous to those of terrestrial plants. The seed bank would ensure the survival of diatoms within highly fluctuating coastal environments, while it would also be the source of sporadic and autochthonous diatom blooms in coastal waters. Four species of estuarine benthic diatoms: Amphiprora c. f. paludosa W. Smith, Nitzschia c. f. dissipata (Kützing) Grunow, Navicula arenaria Donkin, and Nitzschia sigma (Kützing) W. Smith were grown in unialgal cultures. The growth rates of the diatoms were determined as the rate of increase of the chlorophyll a content of the cultures. The diatoms were cultured at different combinations of temperture, daylength, and quantum irradiance. The highest growth rates of Navicula arenaria occurred at 16° to 20°C; the other 3 species had their optimum at 25°C or higher. The small-celled species had higher growth rates at their optimum temperature, but at lower temperatures the growth rates of all 4 species became very similar. The minimum daily quantum irradiance that could effect light-saturated growth at 12° and 20°C ranged from 2.5 to 5.0 E.m-2.day-1. At 12°C, two species had their highest growth rates under an 8 h daily photoperiod. At 20°C, the three species tested all had highest growth rates under 16 h daily photoperiod. The growth response of the benthic diatoms is comparable to that of several cultures of planktonic diatoms, as described in the literature. The influence of temperature and quantum irradiance on the diatoms in the present investigation was comparable to the influence of temperature and light intensity on the 14C-fixation of marine benthic diatoms (Colijn and van Buurt, 1975).  相似文献

Flocculation of phytoplankters into large, rapidly sinking aggregates has been implicated as a mechanism of vertical transport of phytoplankton to the sea floor which could have global significance. The formation rate of phytoplankton aggregates depends on the rate at which single cells collide, which is mainly physically controlled, and on the probability of adhesion upon collision (=coagulation efficiency, stickiness), which depends on physico-chemical and biological properties of the cells. We describe here an experimental method to quantify the stickiness of phytoplankton cells and demonstrate that three species of diatoms grown in the laboratory (Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Skeletonema costatum) are indeed significantly sticky and form aggregates upon collision. The dependency of stickiness on nutrient limitation and growth was studied in the two latter species by investigating variation in stickiness as batch cultures aged. In nutrient repleteT. pseudonana cells stickiness is very low (< 5 × 10?3), but increases by more than two orders of magnitude as cell growth ceases and the cells become nutrient limited. Stickiness ofS. costatum cells is much less variable, and even nutrient replete cells are significantly sticky. Stickiness is highest (> 10?1) forS. costatum cells in the transition between the exponential and the stationary growth phase. The implications for phytoplankton aggregate formation and subsequent sedimentation in the sea of these two different types of stickiness patterns are discussed.  相似文献

Growth rate, survival, and stimulation of the production of UV-B (280 to 320 nm) absorbing compounds were investigated in cultures of five commonly occurring Antarctic marine diatoms exposed to a range of UV-B irradiances. Experimental UV-B exposures ranged from 20 to 650% of the measured peak surface irradiance at an Antarctic coastal site (0.533 J m-2 s-1). The five diatom species (Nitzschia lecointei, Proboscia alata, P. inermis, Thalassiosira tumida and Stellarima microtrias) appear capable of surviving two to four times this irradiance. In contrast to Phaeocystis cf. pouchetii, another major component of the Antarctic phytoplankton, the concentrations of pigments with discrete UV absorption peaks in diatoms were low and did not change significantly under increasing UV-B irradiance. Absorbance of UV-B by cells from which pigments had been extracted commonly greatly exceeded that of the pigments themselves. Most of this absorbance was due to oxidisable cell contents, with the frustule providing the remainder. Survival of diatoms did not correlate with absorption by either pigments, frustules or oxidisable cell contents, indicating that their survival under elevated UV-B irradiances results from processes other than screening mechanisms.  相似文献

Climate models predict that the average temperature in the North Sea could increase 3–5 °C and surface-waters pH could decrease 0.3–0.5 pH units by the end of this century. Consequently, we investigated the combined effect of decreased pH (control pH 8.1; decreased pH 7.6) and temperature (control 6.7 °C; elevated 9.5 °C) on the hatching timing and success, and the zoeal development, survival, feeding, respiration and growth (up to stage IV zoea) of the northern shrimp, Pandalus borealis. At elevated temperature, embryos hatched 3 days earlier, but experienced 2–4 % reduced survival. Larvae developed 9 days faster until stage IV zoea under elevated temperature and exhibited an increase in metabolic rates (ca 20 %) and an increase in feeding rates (ca 15–20 %). Decreased pH increased the development time, but only at the low temperature. We conclude that warming will likely exert a greater effect on shrimp larval development than ocean acidification manifesting itself as accelerated developmental rates with greater maintenance costs and decreased recruitment in terms of number and size.  相似文献

The morphology, external coloration as well as the life span of a kleptoplastic mollusc, Elysia nigrocapitata, was affected by its algal diet. Among algal diets, Chaetomorpha moniligera was the best for growth but not for animal longevity. TEM studies showed several distinctive layers composed of different cell types in sectioned parapodia. The chloroplast-containing digestive cells were located beneath the layer of vacuolated cells. The digestive cells contained 10–15 chloroplasts, in varying states of intactness, and several nuclei. Chloroplasts were not enclosed by any membranous structure in the host cytosol. Chlorophyll a fluorometry showed that the photosynthetic activity of kleptoplasts in E. nigrocapitata could be maintained for a long time only when animals were kept in the dark. The photosynthetic activity of kleptoplasts lasted 3–4 days when the animals were exposed to continuous illumination of 200 μmol photons m?2 s?1. These results suggested that the contribution of kleptoplasts to the survival of the animals might be minimal if the chloroplasts are not sequestered continuously. Cox I, 16S rDNA, and 28S rDNA sequence data have been obtained in order to phylogenetically place the new species of Elysia found in Korea.  相似文献

Zoea I larvae of Hyas araneus L. (Decapoda: Brachyura: Majidae) were dredged in January 1986 from the German Bight and reared in the laboratory at constant 12°C, until they reached the transition of stages C/D0 of the moult cycle (4 d after hatching). This developmental stage had previously been found to correspond with the point of reserve saturation (PRS) which allows autonomous (food-independent) development through the rest of the moult cycle and hence, was termed the D0 threshold. One part of the larvae was continually fed (control), another group was starved from the D0 threshold until moulting to the zoea II instar. In these two experimental groups, as well as in the two groups of zoea II larvae obtained from the different feeding conditions, the course of the moult cycle, biomass (dry weight, W; carbon, C; nitrogen, N; hydrogen, H; energy, E; the latter estimated from C), and ecdysteroid titers (measured with a radio-immuno-assay as ecdysone equivalents) were investigated. When the larvae reached the PRS, they had gained 90% in W, 72% in C, 32% in N, 53% in H, and 65% in E, since hatching, corresponding to an accumulation of 87% of final W and 62 to 69% of C, N, and H reached later, at the end of the mould cycle in the control. The period of starvation caused a 2.5-d delay of the moult cycle, mainly in late premoult, and significant losses of biomass and energy. Starved and fed larvae secreted similar amounts of moulting hormone per individual, but with a reduced rate in the starved group, thus causing developmental delay. Zoea II larvae moulting after starvation contained less than half of the control biomass and energy, and even less than a freshly hatched zoea I. Growth rate was only slightly enhanced in these zoea II larvae as compared to the fed control, but losses of biomass, mainly of lipids, were partly compensated by a 4-d prolongation of their moult cycle, chiefly (3 d) in stage C. Biomass curves were almost parallel in the two experimental groups of zoea II larvae, with significantly higher values in the control during all stages of the moult cycle. However, similar relative proportions (74 to 89%) of late premoult biomass and energy were reached at the D0 threshold, regardless of different feeding history and initial or final values in a given group. The ecdysteroid titer curve of the zoea II which had moulted from starved zoea I was very similar to that in control larvae, but with a 3-d delay in the occurrence of premoult peak concentration (in both groups in stage D1). Regulation and coordination of moult cycle, ecdysteroid titers, and growth in the larval development of decapod crustaceans are discussed, with special reference to the D0 threshold.  相似文献

This study aims at establishing the maturation of the digestive system in Robsonella fontaniana by means of measuring the digestive enzyme activity in paralarvae after hatching. Different groups of newly hatched paralarvae were fed with Artemia sp. (FA), Lithodes santolla zoea (FL) or were starved to serve as negative control (ST), the experimental period lasted 27 days after hatching (DAH). The semi-quantitative assay api® ZYM (bioMérieux, France) was used to identify the pool of digestive enzymes present in paralarvae prior to selecting the specific enzymes acid phosphatase, total protease, trypsin and chymotrypsin for analysis. Mortality and larval protein content were also measured during the experiment. The survival of R. fontaniana hatchlings differed depending on the quality of the diet offered (ST < FA < FL), the same trend was observed with respect to paralarval protein content. Total protease and acid phosphatase activities were not related to either time of development or diet (P < 0.05). However, the activity of trypsin and chymotrypsin after DAH 10 was dependent on diet (P < 0.05). Paralarvae fed with Lithodes zoea (FL) performed better than paralarvae in the other two groups, exhibiting lower mortality, higher protein content and the highest proteolytic activity for trypsin and chymotrypsin. The results indicate that Lithodes-larvae are a better diet for R. fontaniana paralarvae than Artemia sp.  相似文献

The importance of salinity experienced during embryonic development and initial larval biomass on larval growth was studied in the South American estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata. Ovigerous females were maintained at three salinities (15, 20, and 32‰) from egg laying to hatching of zoea l. Larvae from all treatments were reared under constant conditions of photoperiod (12∶12), temperature (18°C), and salinity (first instar at 20‰, subsequent instars at 32‰). Biomass was measured as dry weight, carbon, and nitrogen content per individual at egg laying, hatching of zoea l, premoult zoea l, and zoea 4, and in 8-day-old megalopa. From hatching to premoult zoea 4, biomass was higher for larvae from prehatching salinities of 15 and 32‰. There was a significant positive correlation between biomass at hatching and at premoult zoea l and zoea 4. Accumulated biomass during zoeal stages tended to be higher for larvae from broods with higher biomass at hatching, although this trend was not always significant. Zoea 4 either directly metamorphosed to megalopa or moulted to zoea 5, following, respectively, a short or long developmental pathway. The proportion of zoea 4 that followed the long pathway was negatively correlated with biomass of zoeal stages. Biomass at hatching was correlated with biomass of megalopae developed through the short pathway, although it was not correlated with the accumulated biomass at this stage. Megalopae developed through the long pathway (i.e. metamorphosed from zoeae 5) had higher biomass than those from the short pathway. The present results suggest that prehatching salinity and initial egg and larval biomass can be very important for larval growth. Published online: 9 August 2002  相似文献

Red sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, were tagged with tetracycline in 1990 at subtidal sites off San Nicolas Island, California, USA. After one year in the field, the sea urchins were collected and growth increments were measured based on tetracycline marks, which indicated initial slow growth, a maximum rate, and finally a prolonged period of very slow growth. Small red sea urchins (4 cm diam) were estimated to be 3 to 4 yr old, which is much older than has previously been reported. It is estimated that about 12 yr would be required to attain 10 cm diam. Survival has previously been modeled assuming a constant rate. If the population of red sea urchins is assumed to be stable and stationary, annual survival rate was between 71 and 77% yr-1. Census data for the two years of study have permitted annual survival to be estimated without assuming stable and stationary population structure. Under these conditions, annual survival rate was between 79 and 86% yr-1. Analysis of transitions in the size distributions from 1990 to 1991 suggested that annual survival may have been sizespecific: 91% yr-1 for individuals 1.1 to 4.0 cm diam, 82% yr-1 for individuals 4.1 to 7.0 cm diam, and 63% yr-1 for those of 7.1 to 10.0 cm diam. An alternative explanation to size-specific survival in our study is sizespecific immigration.  相似文献

Marine cladocerans are important contributors to the zooplankton community of tropical and temperate coastal ecosystems during the warmer months, when they show explosive population growth. Despite this fact, little information is available on their ecology compared with the extensive studies on their freshwater relatives. The main objective of this study was to determine the in situ feeding and growth rates, and life history parameters of Penilia avirostris in São Sebastião Bay (Brazil) during austral summer 2004, as a premise to understand the advantages of this cladoceran in oligotrophic waters. Culture development experiments, monitored for a period of 12 days, showed that maximum juvenile release occurred after 2 days, and that the development duration of a complete cohort was around 9 days. From bottle incubation grazing experiments, significant ingestion rates upon flagellates, ciliates, dinoflagellates and diatoms were detected. Flagellates were the most important contributors to P. avirostris diet (ca. 80%). P. avirostris ingested between 28 and 97% of its own carbon biomass per day (daily ration) and individual growth rates of this marine cladoceran (0.10–0.24 d?1) increased with prey availability. The combination of ingestion rates of natural prey and growth rates provided gross growth efficiencies (GGE) of 15–53%, on a carbon basis. Our results suggest that P. avirostris has similar GGE to copepods, although at low food conditions the values for the marine cladocerans seems slightly higher. However, this characteristic alone does not explain the explosive growth and community dominance shown by P. avirostris. Therefore, other traits related to the reproductive biology of the species, such as short generation time, parthenogenetic reproduction, and continuous somatic growth, seems to be mostly responsible for the success of P. avirostris in many marine ecosystems during their seasonal occurrence.  相似文献

Besides diatoms Demospongiae are the most important consumers of dissolved silica in the sea. They can play an important role for the silica budget especially in the shallow water areas of the Baltic Sea. The dependence of the silica uptake rate on the silica concentration of the seawater was measured for the sponge Halichondria panicea (Pallas, 1766). The sponges were collected in Kiel Bight. The uptake conformed to Michaelis–Menten kinetics with a half-saturation constant of 46.41 μM and a saturated uptake rate of 19.33 μmol h−1 g−1 ( p < 0.01). In the red algae zone of Kiel Bight the sponges depend on silica supply from the surrounding waters and may be silica-limited rather than food-limited in growth. Because of the much faster uptake of silica by diatoms and their lower saturation point, as well as the difference in spatial distribution of the two main silica consumers, a competition for silica between sponges and diatoms seems unlikely. Four endosymbiotic diatoms were isolated from 2 species of larger foraminifera collected in the Red Sea and Hawaii. The photoadaptive responses of the cultured diatoms were measured at 312, 19 and 7 W cm-2. Two of the diatoms (Fragilaria shiloi and Nitzschia laevis), both isolated from Amphistegina lessonii, grew fastest at 312 W cm-2. The other two diatoms (N. valdestriata and N. panduriformis) which were isolated from Heterostegina depressa, grew best at 19 W cm-2. Of the four diatoms, F. shiloi grew best at high light levels. Also in F. shiloi, chlorophyll c content per cell was directly proportional to light intensity; in contrast chlorophyll a and carotenoids increased to maxima at 19 W cm-2. The chlorophyll a and c and carotenoid content of N. valdestriata were also maximal at 19 W cm-2. Photosynthetic rates, measured by respirometry, suggested that the diatoms were photoinhibited at higher light intensities and did well at moderately low light intensities (175W cm-2). The photocompensation points of all 4 diatoms were about 2% of the light available in the spring at 1-m depth at Elat on the Red Sea. At Elat the photocompensation point would lie between 40 and 50 m if the algae were free in nature. The amount of attenuation of light by the shells of the host has not yet been measured. Presumably photocompensation of the algae within hosts is reached at depths less than 40 m.  相似文献
