Size-frequency distributions were determined for 3 common lantern-fishes (Stenobrachius leucopsarus, Diaphus theta, and Tarletonbeania crenularis) off Oregon in the summer. The fishes were caught mainly in sound-scattering layers by a large pelagic trawl with 5 opening-closing nets. Changes in depth distribution and diel vertical migration with growth were evident for all 3 species. The size of S. leucopsarus increased markedly with depth both at 0 to 90 m at night and 250 to 500 m during the day. Larger D. theta were also found deeper during the day (between 250 and 450 m), but neither D. theta nor T. crenularis demonstrated size segregation in the upper 90 m at night. Large D. theta and small T. crenularis did not appear to migrate into surface waters at night. Age-Group O (15 to 20 mm) S. leucopsarus were most abundant in deep water (400 to 480 m) in the daytime and did not migrate into near-surface waters at night. Age-Group I (30 to 40 mm) S. leucopsarus were common at about 300 m by day and within the upper 30 m at night. Age-Group II–III (50 to 60 mm) apparently followed the evening ascent of Age-Group I fish and most resided at 75 to 90 m at night, beneath Age-Group I fish. Age-Group III+fish (70 to 80 mm) were associated with Age-Group O at 400 to 480 m by day and usually did not migrate above 200 m at night. The size structure of S. leucopsarus differed among the nets of a single tow at one depth, or between two tows that fished the same depths on successive nights, indicating horizontal patchiness in age structure. D. theta demonstrated low within-tow variability in size composition which indicated a spatially more uniform age structure on a scale of kilometers. The size structures of these 3 lanternfishes were different in the same area and the same season during two different years, suggesting variable survival of year classes or horizontal patchiness of age composition in the area sampled.  相似文献

The swimbladders of three species of myctophid fishes (Symbolophorus californiensis, Tarletonbeania crenularis and Diaphus theta, collected in the Southern California Bight between 1963 and 1978), previously observed to have both inflated and noninflated swimbladders as adults, were examined to determine if the swimbladders either vary in their inflation on a diel basis or cease to be inflated and possibly become nonfunctional in some individuals. The swimbladders of two lanternfishes reported to lack inflated swimbladders as adults (Lampanyctus regalis and L. ritteri) were included in the study for comparison. Only the swimbladder of L. regalis did not increase in size with increasing fish size. In the remaining four species, both the lengths and volumes of noninflated swimbladders were positively correlated with fish standard length (SL). Although the swimbladder continued to increase in size, inflated swimbladders were not found in L. ritteri>2 mm SL. Inflated and noninflated swimbladders occurred in overlapping size ranges of S. californiensis, T. crenularis, and D. theta. Only 11% of the D. theta swimbladders were inflated, and the occurrence of inflated swimbladders dit not differ significantly with day vs night capture or fish size. Although the frequency of occurrence of inflated swimbladders decreased significantly in larger S. californiensis, both S. californiensis and T. crenularis caught at the surface at night with a neuston net had significantly higher proportions of inflated swimbladders than did those collected below the surface with either daytime or night-time trawls. The swimbladder does not appear to become nonfunctional in either species. Rather than maintaining either constant volumes or constant masses of gas in their swimbladders during their vertical migrations, both species may inflate their swimbladders only while in the surface waters at night, and have noninflated swimbladders while at other depths of their vertical ranges.  相似文献

In order to determine the effects of bottom depth and water column structure on slope distributions, lanternfishes in the Cape Canyon and Cape Point Valley (eastern South Atlantic) and from the Feni Ridge and Hebridean Terrace (eastern North Atlantic) were sampled with commercial midwater nets fished 10 m above the bottom at preselected depths. Fifty-one species were taken in the eastern South Atlantic and 17 species in the eastern North Atlantic. Analyses of the samples included clustering and multi-dimensional scaling ordination of the root-root transformed densities using the Bray-Curtis similarity index. In the eastern South Atlantic (March 1988), where the horizontal and vertical temperature structuring of the water column was marked, oceanic myctophids were not taken shallower than the 300 m-depth horizon and less than one-third of the total number of species occurred inside the 500 m-depth horizon. Temperatures and bottom depths correlated with the downslope distributions of the species. Down-slope zonation was apparent. In the eastern North Atlantic (May 1983), where the temperature structure of the water column was similar at all stations, no oceanic species were taken at the 200 m-depth horizon and more than one-half of the total number of species was taken at the 300 m-depth horizon. Species distributions correlated with depth, and downslope zonation was not evident. The data sets, as well as information from the West Florida slope, suggest that both the depth and the regional temperature structure of the water column effect the upper slope distributions of oceanic myctophids. Long-slope, ribbon distribution patterns (generalized down-slope zonation) in myctophids may therefore be localized artifacts produced by the interaction of these factors.  相似文献

Morphology and microstructure of the sagittal otoliths from three species of mesopelagic, tropical-subtropical myctophids [Benthosema suborbitale (Gilbert),Diaphus dumerilii (Bleeker)Lepidophanes guentheri (Goode and Bean)], collected from September 1984 to May 1986 in the eastern Gulf of Mexico (27°N, 86°W), were examined and described. Analysis of the microstructure revealed microincrements corresponding to the daily growth rings reported in many studies. Using marginal increment analysis, the deposition of microincrements was verified as occurring daily, the first validation of daily growth rings in the otoliths of mesopelagic fishes. In all three species, the clear central (larval growth) zone of the sagitta was sharply delimited by a dark check accompanied by a series of accessory primordia. A wide, dark, sharply defined postlarval zone (width 100 µm) radiated out from this boundary inB. suborbitale andL. guentheri. While a darkened region was also observed around the larval growth zone inD. dumerilii, it was diffuse and differed in structure from that in the other two species. Within the dark zone in the otoliths ofB. suborbitale andL. guentheri, two different microincremental structures were observed. The narrower of these was determined to be the increment deposited on a daily basis. The structure and formation of the dark region in these three species appear to be related to larval transformation and behaviors of different species of myctophid larvae.  相似文献

Pontellid copepods were collected from the surface waters of a tidal front region in the Bungo Channel (the Inland Sea of Japan) in June 1986 to examine the relationship between the morphology of cephalic appendages and gut contents. In particular, two dominant species,Labidocera japonica Mori andPontellopsis yamadae Mori, were compared in detail. Large setae on the second maxillae ofL. japonica possessed two rows of setules at right angles to each seta along its inner margin except a terminal part which was serrated, whereas the inner margin of those setae ofP. yamadae was entirely serrated. Judging from the structure of the mouthparts, especially the second maxillae, the former species seems to employ both suspension and raptorial feeding modes, in contrast to the latter, which may use only the raptorial mode of feeding. InP. yamadae, the first maxilla and the maxilliped are also modified for carnivory. Gut content analysis supported the morphological evidence for feeding differences, and revealed thatP. yamadae is a carnivore preying mainly on copepodids whileL. japonica feeds omnivorously on copepod nauplii and phytoplankton particles. Since the mouthpart structures of congeners are quite similar to each other, the feeding behavior and habits might also be similar. Within the family Pontellidae, the generaAnomalocera, Calanopia, Epilabidocera, andPontella have mouthpart structures similar to those ofLabidocera, whereas the genusPontellina resemblesPontellopsis. Morphological similarities would suggest that the first group of genera employs both suspension and raptorial feeding modes, and thatPontellina is a carnivore likePontellopsis.  相似文献

Stenobrachius leucopsarus, the most abundant species of myctophid fishes off Oregon, USA, has a bimodal distribution at night, with a peak of abundance in the upper 100 m composed of diel vertical migrants, and another peak at 300 to 500 m composed of fish that did not migrate the night they were caught. We compared the feeding habits of these two groups of fish in an attempt to learn if deep fish migrated to surface waters. Low similarity of diets, differences in the rank order of common prey, and similar states of stomach fullness and digestion of prey suggest that fish captured in deep water at night probably did not feed exclusively in shallow water on previous nights. They probably fed in deep water. The similarity in food habits between deep and shallow fish is most readily explained by daytime feeding by fish in deep water and by broad vertical distributions of prey.  相似文献

The ecological importance of mysid (Crustacea: Mysidacea) populations in coastal food webs is not well understood. Although the 10 or more species of epibenthic mysids found in Clayoquot Sound, BC, Canada, form the primary prey resource for seasonally abundant gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus), little is known about their life history. Here, Holmesmysis sculpta dominates multi-species swarms, however there are several potential routes to this state, one of which is higher embryo production. Reproductive capacity is key to the resiliency of local mysid populations and species diversity, in this study I compare one aspect, brood size for the four most commonly found species, H. sculpta, Neomysis rayii, Exacanthomysis davisi, and Columbiaemysis ignota. The number of embryos per brood was found to vary significantly between species; however, individual length is a stronger determinant of brood size. Here, I report previously unknown life history attributes of coastal mysid species, with important consequences for community structure and local marine food webs.  相似文献

The occurrence and relative frequency of the 5 grey mullet species found in the Black Johnson Estuary, Sierra Leone, have been observed by sampling throughout the year. Examination of stomach contents and scales has also been made. Salinity within the estuary is maximum during the dry season and minimum at the height of the rains. The organic content of the sediment reaches a peak towards the end of the rains, but is low both at the end of the dry season and during the rains. Mullet tend to be most abundant as the rains are finishing and at the beginning of the dry season when the salinity is rising and the organic matter in the sediment is maximum. The mullet encountered in the estuary were Liza falcipinnis (Cuvier and Valenciennes), L. dumerilii hoefleri (Steindachner), Mugil cephalus ashanteensis Bleeker, M. curema Cuvier and Valenciennes and L. grandisquamis (Cuvier and Valenciennes). L. falcipinnis and L. dumerilii hoefleri penetrated furthest up the estuary and have been caught in freshwater some distance up rivers. All species feed principally on the detritus and algae in the estuarine sediment. There is some seasonal variation in the composition of the diet. Comparative data on the organic content of the estuarine sediment and the sand in the stomach of the mullet are given. A field experiment with L. falcipinnis suggests an assimilation efficiency of 52% for this species. Well-marked rings have been found upon the scales of four species, and their possible significance and use are discussed.  相似文献

Ecology of 2 littoral species of caprellid amphipods is compared. Populations of Caprella laeviuscula, a periphyton scraper/filter-feeder, are most dense on eelgrass Zostera marina L. In the absence of C. laeviuscula, periphyton biomass increases 411% in protected Z. marina beds. The light absorption spectra of periphyton and Z. marina are similar, and C. laeviuscula, by its periphyton removal, may allow Z. marina to grow in areas where it would otherwise be excluded. C. laeviuscula is aggressively dominant over sympatric caprellids, and seasonal predators of C. laeviuscula are absent during winter, the period when periphyton would be most limiting to Z. marina. Populations of Deutella californica, a predator, are most dense on the hydroid Obelia dichotoma (L.). In the O. dichotoma epibiotic community, D. californica is the primary predator, but removal did not change the composition of the community structure. In the absence of other macropredators, the structure of the O. dichotoma epibiotic community depends more on the seasonality of O. dichotoma occurrence than on organismal interactions.  相似文献

The capacity to recognise a conspecific intruder was investigated in Parischnogaster jacobsoni, Liostenogaster flavolineata and L. vechti, three species of primitively social wasps of the subfamily Stenogastrinae. Results of behavioural experiments carried out in the field showed that females of all three species react pacifically if presented with female nestmates, but aggressively reject an intruder from a conspecific colony. As L. flavolineata and L. vechti both build large clusters of nests, often very close to each other, the recognition capacity among females from different nests, but in the same conspecific cluster, was also investigated. Females of both species were more aggressive towards females from a different colony in the same cluster than towards their female nestmates. Additional experiments on L. flavolineata showed that there was no difference in reaction towards females from colonies nearer or further from the tested colony but within the same cluster, nor towards females from a different cluster. The capacity to recognise an alien conspecific nest containing immature brood was investigated in P. jacobsoni. Adult females of this species, invited to land on an alien nest which had experimentally been exchanged for their own, accepted the new nest and partially destroyed the immature brood. The behaviour of the females when they land on an alien nest, however, suggests that they do recognise the nest as foreign. Acceptance of foreign nests coupled with low immature brood destruction is probably due to the high energetic costs of egg-deposition and larval rearing in stenogastrine wasps. These results suggest that nestmate recognition in these wasps is very efficient, even though they belong to the most primitive subfamily of social wasps. The foraging behaviours and dietary compositions of three co-occurring labrids (Ophthalmolepis lineolatus, Notolabrus gymnogenis and Pictilabrus laticlavius), which are conspicuous on rocky reefs in temperate south-eastern Australia, were investigated between 2003 and 2005. SCUBA observations at two locations showed that the feeding intensity, and hence the associated effects of these fishes on rocky reef invertebrate prey, was temporally consistent. Relative differences in the contributions of ingested prey and use of different feeding microhabitats demonstrated that the feeding ecology differed significantly among the three species. Thus, O. lineolatus fed on proportionately higher volumes of polychaetes, polyplacophorans, marginellid gastropods (especially Austroginella sp.), bivalves and echinoids, which were sighted opportunistically in a wide selection of microhabitats, but particularly in sand/rubble. Ambush hunting was used regularly by smaller N. gymnogenis and all sizes of P. laticlavius to forage on amphipods, small decapods and small gastropods at algal bases or fronds and Diopatra dentata tubes. Amphipods were similarly important in the diet of smaller O. lineolatus. Larger N. gymnogenis foraged opportunistically over an increased reef area and made greater use of microhabitats that offered minimal prey refuge (e.g. sand/rubble, bare rock/steel) from which common prey, in particular decapods, were obtained. The significant intra- and inter-specific differences in dietary compositions, allied with differences in the use of feeding microhabitats, would facilitate co-occurrence of these three conspicuous species and contribute to maintaining high richness of labrid species in reef systems. Echinoids were regularly consumed by each species but they made a moderate contribution to the diet of only O. lineolatus, which suggests that only one of the three labrids is likely to play a significant role in regulation of echinoid densities in these rocky reef habitats. However, the broad diets and diverse forging strategies employed by these labrid species imply that they have a system-wide influence on invertebrate prey on rocky reefs.  相似文献

Otoliths of five Hygophum species were examined by means of light and scanning electron microscopy. In otoliths of four species (H. benoiti, H. macrochir, H. reinhardtii and H. taaningi) a strong cyclic pattern of the incremental structure was observed. In the fifth species (H. hygomii) such a pattern did not exist. An analysis of archival data on mesopelagic collections suggested three types of Hygophum spp. migratory behavior in relation to the lunar cycle which corresponded with the otolith microstructure. In H. hygomii only limited influence of moon phase on the uppermost range of night-vertical migration toward the surface was observed. The abundant nighttime occurrence of this species moved from the 0 to 50 m into the 50 to 100 m depth strata at full moon. In H. benoiti, a great part of the population, mainly juveniles, showed a tendency toward cessation of the vertical migrations during the first and fourth quarters of the lunar cycle. H. macrochir and H. taaningi had the strongest correlation of behavior with the lunar cycle. Both species showed arrested vertical migrations at the new moon phase, staying at day depths during the night, i. e., below 400 m. Thus, sequences of clear growth increments in otoliths represented a fast-growth period associated with the night migration to the warm surface layers, while bands without easily distinguishable incremental structure were interpreted as a period of slow growth in deep, cold waters due to limitation of the upward migration range occurring approximately at new moon.  相似文献

Many species of tellinacean bivalves mainly deposit-feed but are also known to vary their feeding behavior in response to predation and to the availability of suspended organic matter relative to that of sedimentary organic matter. This study showed that three species of the Pacific genusMacoma (Macoma nasuta Conrad, 1937,Macoma secta Conrad, 1837, andMacoma inquinata Deshayes, 1855, from the San Juan Islands, Washington, USA) varied their deposit-feeding behavior in response to water flow near the sediment-water interface and to sediment transport. In the summers of 1987, 1988 and 1989, water velocity was varied in a large racetrack flume, in order to change both water velocity and bottom sediment transport. In quiet water, the inhalant siphon was protruded far from the siphon hole. As water velocity increased, with little or no sediment transport, the deposit-feeding radius decreased. Qualitative observations suggested that this was related to the drag on the siphon. InM. secta, the distance of siphon protrusion was not related to body size. Under conditions of higher near-bottom water velocity, combined with bottom sediment transport, some individuals ceased to deposit-feed, while others sustained feeding by ingesting sediment within the siphon hole, at least 1 cm beneath the sediment-water interface. These results suggest that hydrodynamic conditions are a major determinant of feeding behavior, and previous explanations of variable feeding behavior as a response to predation may have to be adjusted to accommodate this expanded set of responses.  相似文献

Five Antarctic or south-temperate species of Spirorbiaae are centred in south-west Africa, whilst 6 tropical species extend round the south-east and another 4 are recorded from Mozambique. Of the three new species, Pileolaria (Pileolaria) annectans sp. n. has a rudimentary opercular plate surmounting a sort-walled sac of embryos, which somewhat resembles a thoracic brood pouch. Pileolaria (Pileolaria) dayi sp. n. has a helmet-like brood chamber, but this opens distally, like the brood cups found in the subgenus Duplicaria. Janua Pil-natalensis sp. n. has the dorsal collar folds usually separate, but partially fused in some juveniles.  相似文献

Unpredictable inter-annual variations in the timing, spatial extent and intensity of the sardine run (Sardinops sagax) have been documented in recent years along the coastline of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This study aimed to determine whether variations in the availability of sardine were reflected in the diet and condition of common dolphins (Delphinus capensis) over the past three decades. Stomach contents from 95 common dolphins incidentally caught between 2000 and 2009 were analysed and compared to historical data collected between 1972 and 1992. A shift in the principal prey species consumed by the dolphins was observed over the past 30 years. Prior to 1992, sardine comprised up to 49 % of the total stomach contents by mass, whilst chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) was the dominant prey recorded in the stomach contents between 2000 and 2009 (66 %). As common dolphins prey on locally abundant fish species, this dietary shift may indicate changes in the availability of the most abundant fish prey. Stable isotope analyses of tooth tissue revealed no significant changes in the δ15N and δ13C isotopic ratios over the past three decades (P = 0.283 for N and P = 0.922 for C). Blubber thickness as a percentage of body length and blubber weight as a percentage of total body weight were assessed as indicators of animal condition. No significant changes in proportional blubber weight or blubber thickness were seen over the last 40 years (1970–2009) for all age cohorts. This species appears to be well adapted to cope with changes in prey species availability, without impacting on body condition.  相似文献

Among the Hawaiian species in the genus Conus, larval life histories range from long-term planktotrophy to nonpelagic lecithotrophy. Prehatching developmental time, hatching size, pelagic period and total prejuvenile developmental time are all significantly correlated with egg size, while settling size is correlated with none of these larval characteristics. Therefore, larval life history patterns in the genus Conus appear to be determined by 2 sets of selective forces: the first influencing egg size, and the second stipulating settling size. As egg sizes become larger, hatching sizes and prehatching developmental time increase while pelagic periods and total prejuvenile developmental times decrease. Settling size appears to be related to water depth, but food requirements of newly metamorphosed juveniles may also be important.  相似文献

Samples collected from the eastern Atlantic Ocean between 40° and 4° N with rectangular and ring nets contained male specimens of Nematoscelis atlantica, N. microps, and N. tenella (Euphausiacea) with saddle-shaped thickenings of chitin on the dorsal surface of some abdominal segments, and with enlarged photophores on the abdominal segments immediately posterior to those with thickenings. Two forms of each species are distinguished by the number and the position of chitinous thickenings and enlarged photophores. Except in a zone off W. Africa (approximately between 22° and 16° N) each form of N. atlantica and N. microps occurs as a distinct population. These populations appear to be characteristic of either the North or South Atlantic Central water, and the overlap zone corresponds approximately with the physical boundary between these water masses and with a faunal transition zone found in this region by other workers. For N. tenella it appears that only one form occurs as a separate population south of 18° N in South Atlantic Central water. Between 28° and 18° N the two forms co-exist.  相似文献

Summary Habits, home range, and social behavior of three species of voles of the genus Pitymys, P. multiplex, P. subterraneus, and P. savii, were studied in Tessin (Switzerland) by radioactive tagging. P. multiplex and P. savii are fossorial and often use the burrow systems of moles (Talpa); P. subterraneus moves around on the surface under dense vegetation. Males and females of P. multiplex were territorial and their home ranges averaged 342 and 229 m2 respectively. The mating system appeared to be monogamous. P. savii male and female home ranges averaged 445 and 298 m2 respectively. Groups of up to one to three adult females, one or more adult males, and several young, occupied exclusive communal territories. The mating system appeared to be flexible, including monogamy, polygyny, and polyandry. P. subterraneus females occupied exclusive territories (mean 256 m2) overlapped by the home ranges of one or more males (1025 m2). The mating system appeared to be promiscuous. Individuals of the three species occupied one to seven nests. In P. savii all family members utilized three or more communal nests at the same time or alternatively. Co-nesting between males and females of P. multiplex or P. subterraneus were observed less frequently.  相似文献

Diel activity rhythms of the prawn Palaemon xiphias Risso, 1818 from Alfacs Bay, Ebro Delta, were studied by time-lapse videorecordings. Activity displayed an endogenous circadian rhythm, with maximum activity at night. Feeding habits were studied by frequency of occurrence and by the points method. The food of P. xiphias consisted mainly of crustaceans; the remains of amphipods, isopods, mysids, copepods, decapods and ostracods were identified. The remaining items consisted of molluscs, polychaetes, ophiuroids, plant material, sand, and unidentified organic debris. The results indicate that P. xiphias is a predator of benthic invertebrates rather than a scavenger or detritus feeder. Diet composition changes with increasing size of the prawn.  相似文献

Quantitative studies of mating behavior between conspecific and heterospecific pairs of three closely related species in the genus Pseudodiaptomus reveal differences in the timing of life-history events, species-specific attraction of mates, distinctive tactile cues, multiple spermatophore attachments, and gametic incomptibility or hybrid inviability. These differences may function as reproductive isolating mechanisms among calanoid copepods. Differences in breeding behaviors and associated morphological features are greater between sympatric than between allopatric species, indicating that selection reinforces both behavioral and morphological divergences.  相似文献
