Samples of Balanus balanoides (L.) in the Menai Straits were taken from their upper limit of distribution on the shore, from mean low water (MLW) and at three different times of the year, January, May and August. Individual prosomae were homogenised, electrophoresed on polyacrylamide gels and esterase isozymes determined. Group BbEI esterase isozymes fitted the Hardy-Weinberg predicted values for 4 co-dominant alleles in all samples. A comparison of BbEI phenotype frequency distribution of the upper shore and MLW samples showed no significant difference at the 5% level. The phenotype frequency of samples taken at different times of the year were significantly different at the 5% level, due to an excess of allele A in winter and an excess of allele C in summer. It is argued that the seasonal variation of phenotype frequency is probably not due to selection operating on a balanced polymorphism, but that the expression of the alleles through the synthesis of esterase isozymes is dependent on some environmental agent, postibly temperature or day length.  相似文献

Habitat protection, creation and management are at the forefront of nature conservation throughout the world. Many terrestrial and marine ecosystems are under pressure from a diverse range of issues including impacts associated with climate change, multiple resource use and increased development. Saltmarsh within the United Kingdom, is one such valuable habitat which has suffered significant losses over the last eighty or so years. Any environmental management practice or decision applied to these areas, should ideally be based on evidence of processes and change. One potential way of measuring saltmarsh change is by using historical maps and aerial photographs to look for patterns of growth or reduction. This research examines the process of saltmarsh mapping and compares historical aerial photographs and maps to assess their suitability for habitat change assessment. This research suggests that whilst historical aerial photography can be accessed and utilised effectively, the data presented on maps should be treated with a great deal of caution. The saltmarsh represented on the maps used in this research was noticeably different from that mapped using aerial photographs from a similar time period. Whilst this does not dismiss the use of historic maps along this part of the coast, it does suggest they should be treated with some degree of caution and will vary in their reliability.  相似文献

The availability of food resources has been suggested as a major factor in the substantial increase in reproductive output, survival, recruitment and, ultimately, population growth rates in most organisms. In fact, the artificial increase in food availability resulting from human activities has been suggested as a factor in the substantial increase in population size of several seabirds in recent decades. In the present study, our primary aim was to estimate the importance of the main natural prey and two alternative feeding resources, fishery discards and the invasive American crayfish Procambarus clarkii, for an opportunistic seabird, the Audouin’s gull Larus audouinii. We also assessed the influence of age and sex in the use of those three types of food. For this purpose, we compared the analyses of δ15N and δ13C in blood of male and female adults of known age and chicks with those in their potential prey. Our results reveal sex-related and age-related differences in the consumption of fish discards, small pelagic fish and American crayfish. Differences in the diet of males and females and also between adults and chicks could be related to different nutritional requirements. Age differences were probably related to their different foraging proficiency and the tendency of young breeders to opportunistically exploit anthropogenically derived food. This study illustrates the importance of considering the age and sex of individuals to obtain feasible dietary information and to understand how the exploitation of food of human origin could affect population growth.  相似文献

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are carcinogenic and nephrotoxic plant alkaloids present in Aristolochia species, used in traditional medicine. Recent biomolecular and environmental studies have incriminated these toxins as an etiological agent in Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN), a severe kidney disease occurring in the Balkan Peninsula. The questions on how the susceptible populations are exposed to these toxins have not yet been clearly answered. Exposure to AAs through the food chain, and environmental pollution (soil/dust), could provide an explanation for the presence of BEN in the countries where no folkloric use of the plant has been documented (Bulgaria, Croatia). Additional exposure pathways are likely to occur, and we have shown previously that AAs can contaminate crop plants through absorption from soil, under controlled laboratory environment. Here, we attempt to provide additional support to this potential exposure pathway, by revealing the presence of AAI in soil and soil organic matter samples collected from BEN and non-BEN areas. The samples were processed in order to be analyzed by high-pressure liquid chromatography, and ion trap mass spectrometry. Our results showed the presence of AAI in small concentrations, both in BEN and non-BEN soils, especially where Aristolochia plants and seeds were present.  相似文献

Laboratory and field experiments were used to determine whether high (≃100 mg l−1), low (≃50 mg l−1) and control (≃0 mg l−1) levels of suspended sediment affected fertilisation, larval survival, and larval settlement in the scleractinian coral Acropora digitifera (Dana, 1846). Both high- and low-sediment treatments significantly decreased fertilisation, but post-fertilisation embryonic development was not inhibited by suspended sediments. Larval survival and larval settlement were significantly reduced in high- and low-sediment treatments. No difference was found between high- and low-sediment treatments in any of the three post-spawning processes investigated, suggesting that they are susceptible to sediment concentrations which are not exceptionally high even under natural conditions (>50 mg l−1). The introduction of an additional stress in the form of high levels of suspended sediments coupled with naturally high variability in recruitment may have a considerable effect on the successful supply and settlement of coral larvae to a reef. Given that many coral communities are open reproductive systems, the consequences of disturbance events are not likely to be restricted to the impact area. Recruitment to a population may be reduced significantly in the presence of high levels of suspended sediments because of effects on larval survival and settlement. Recruitment of larvae to adjacent populations may also be affected due to a decreased fertilisation success and potential increases in mortality of larvae passing through the affected site. Polyphenols were located in all the layers of the periostracum and in inclusion bodies in the inner face of the outer-fold cells of Mytilus edulis L. Results, after 4 days periostracum repair, show that the proto-ostracal material is deposited in distinct layers. Inclusion bodies in the cells of the inner face of the outer fold appear to give rise to the polyphenols in the proto-ostracal material.  相似文献

Summary As part of continuing studies of sociality in the wren genus Campylorhynchus we have been studying the bicolored wren — a facultatively cooperative breeder — for the past 6 years in the central Venezuelan savanna. Reproductive groups have ranged in size from 2 to 5. In one of our study populations, only about 15% of the groups contained helpers, and nearly all these contained only a single male helper (Fig. 2). In an adjacent population, the majority of groups contained helpers, and more than half of these contained several helpers of either sex. Territory size is, on average, much smaller in the latter population. In these populations the presence of a single helper is associated with a three-fold increase in reproductive success (Table 1). Additional helpers are not associated with further reproductive enhancement. Enhancement is chiefly due to an increased proportion of nest starts that eventually produce independent juveniles. This reproductive enhancement is not merely an epiphenomenon resulting from the presence of helpers on territories which are superior for other reasons, such as greater resource availability or the quality of particular parents. It is also not a function of the mean or variance in nestling feeding rate. Predator exclusion experiments, in which certan nests were artificially protected from terrestrial predators, suggested that the mechanism of reproductive enhancement was heightened effectiveness of nest defense. Helpers are usually nondispersers from the parental territory, and have always been found to be close relative of the nestlings that they assist in rearing.  相似文献

Side-scan sonar and underwater video camera records as well as dredging samples were used to map the bottom morphology and biocoenoses in the Taranto seas. A 1:20,000 scale chart has been produced with all the data recorded. Most of the study area consists of biocoenoses affected by the anthropogenic activities of the town of Taranto. Some native broadly tolerant species seem to benefit from these activities and become increasingly dominant. Telomere length has been purported as a biomarker for age and could offer a non-lethal method for determining the age of wild-caught individuals. Molluscs, including oysters and abalone, are the basis of important fisheries globally and have been problematic to accurately age. To determine whether telomere length could provide an alternative means of ageing molluscs, we evaluated the relationship between telomere length and age using the commercially important Sydney rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata). Telomere lengths were estimated from tissues of known age individuals from different age classes, locations and at different sampling times. Telomere length tended to decrease with age only in young oysters less than 18 months old, but no decrease was observed in older oysters aged 2–4 years. Regional and temporal differences in telomere attrition rates were also observed. The relationship between telomere length and age was weak, however, with individuals of identical age varying significantly in their telomere length making it an imprecise age biomarker in oysters.  相似文献

Dietary information obtained from stomach contents can provide a wealth of information on an animal’s ecology. Where animals are cryptic, such as the post-hatchling life history stage of a sea turtle, the ecological insight that dietary analyses can provide, may be otherwise unobtainable. Investigations into post-hatchling turtle stomach contents have found planktonic organisms, dominated by pelagic molluscs and crustaceans, hydrozoans, Sargassum and fish eggs. The nature of these dietary organisms provides evidence for the widely accepted hypothesis that, with the exception of the flatback turtle (Natator depressus), the post-hatchling stage of a sea turtle’s life history is pelagic and oceanic. As the majority of studies that have investigated the stomach contents of post-hatchling sea turtles have been conducted on loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) in the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, insight derived from dietary investigations into post-hatchling ecology is biased. This study investigates the diet of post-hatchling green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead turtles in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Stomach contents were obtained from 55 green and loggerhead post-hatchling turtles that had stranded or been consumed by Coryphaena hippurus. Our findings demonstrate that loggerhead and green post-hatchlings in the southwest Pacific share similar feeding ecology and feed on a variety of neustonic items that are indicative of an oceanic and pelagic existence. The dietary items consumed by both species investigated belong to similar taxonomic groups as those found in previous studies with species level distinctions occurring owing to the different geographical location.  相似文献

Accurate measurements of surface temperatures with an infrared (IR) thermometer require input of the emissivities of the surfaces being measured; however, few determinations of the emissivities of intertidal organisms’ surfaces have been made. Emissivities of intertidal macroalgae were measured to determine whether algal species, measurement angle, hydration, and layering affected them. Emissivities were similar and averaged 0.94 among 11 of 13 species. The species with lower and more variable emissivities (Chondracanthus exasperatus and Desmarestia viridis) differed in morphology from the other species, which were relatively flat thin blades with little surface texture. Measurement angle caused emissivities to decrease significantly in Mazzaella splendens but not in three other species. Hydration and layering of Ulva lactuca also had no effect. At 22 °C, measured temperatures were within 1 °C of actual temperatures when thermometer emissivity settings ranged from 0.75 to 1.00. When emissivities were set lower than actual values, measured temperatures were lower than actual temperatures at 15 °C and higher than actual temperatures at 60 °C. When the IR thermometer was used to measure surface temperatures of nine species of intertidal algae immediately before they were inundated by the incoming tide, temperatures were higher in mid intertidal than low intertidal individuals and higher on a sunnier day than an overcast day. Temperatures of U. lactuca increased with increasing height on the shore, but temperatures of Ulvaria obscura did not. Temperatures were also higher in Fucus distichus blades than receptacles, and lower in U. lactuca and M. splendens occurring in the lower layers of stacks of algae.  相似文献

Environmental pollution has generated release of high amounts of arsenic (As) which ultimately are detected in the water of Indus Basin Punjab, Pakistan. The area is characterized by a semiarid climate, and alluvial deposits. This investigation, an extension of previously reported As-affected area in Lahore and Kasur, aimed to (1) assess the extent of water contamination in this area and (2) determine possible safer sites for future water use. In a comparative study, total As contamination of underground water from individual dwellings and community water supply of some villages located at the boundary of the Sheikhopura and Lahore districts, Pakistan were measured to compare with previously published data of villages located at the boundary of the Lahore and Kasur districts. The results showed variable levels of As in shallow drinking water wells and average concentration exceeding WHO guidelines value. As levels ranged from below 5.2 to 80 µg/L and mean 45.5 µg/L. The As concentrations were higher than WHO limits but lower than previous studied area. In addition, high salinity was found to be a serious concern for deteriorating groundwater quality rendering it unsuitable for drinking. Groundwater is predominantly of the Na–HCO3 type with slightly alkaline pH. High pH values and competition of As with HCO3 may serve as an important process for mobilization of As in the shallow groundwater of the region. Continuous monitoring and expansion of monitoring systems are necessary to establish safer wells within As-contaminated areas.  相似文献

The barnacle Balanus improvisus and the mussel Mytilus trossulus have been used as biomonitors of the trace metals Cu, Zn, Cd, Fe, Pb, Mn and Ni at five sublittoral sites in the Gulf of Gdansk (Baltic Sea) between February 2000 and September 2001. The study has established a benchmark against which future biomonitoring programmes will be able to establish changes in local metal pollution, particularly if metal loadings in the river Vistula (draining into the Gulf) alter in the future. The study highlighted differences in trace metal bioavailabilities to both barnacles and mussels, geographically and over time. Accumulated metal concentrations of Cu, Zn, Fe, Pb and Ni, but not Cd or Mn, were correlated in the barnacles and mussels, suggesting that the bioavailabilities of the former metals to the two biomonitors were similar. The barnacles showed greater discriminatory power than the mussels as trace metal biomonitors. Concentrations of trace metals in surficial sediments (<63 m) did not correlate significantly with accumulated metal concentrations in either barnacles or mussels, indicating that sediment metal concentrations are not necessarily good proxy measures of ambient trace metal bioavailabilities to the local coastal filter feeders.Communicated by J.P. An automatic colorimetric procedure for measuring nanomolar quantities of nitrate and nitrite in seawater has been improved in sensitivity. Application of this method toin situ investigations in the North Atlantic Ocean in January 1989 and algal culture (Skeletonema costatum) experiments in the laboratory demonstrated that one can record concentrations in the 0 to 100 nM range using classical Technicon AutoAnalyzer equipment. In this working range highest precision obtained was ±2.87 and ±1.24 nM for nitrate and nitrite, respectively.  相似文献

To develop a method for the determination of photosynthetic pigment species in individual phytoplankton cells, especially natural picophytoplankton cells, the fluorescence spectra of intact cells were studied with cultured phytoplankton. The study was made mainly with phycoerythrin-containing picophytoplankton collected off Japan in 1982 with reference to diatomal species and phycoerythrin-free cyanophycean species. The spectra were measured for cell suspensions with an ordinary spectrofluorometer, and for individual cells with a microscope spectrofluorometer, paying special attention to the effect of cell-fixation. Results indicated that: (1) the cell-fixation with the glutaraldehyde and paraformaldehyde mixture modified phycoerythrin emission from picophytoplankton markedly in its wavelength location and intensity, but (2) the emission from phycocyanin was affected far less, and (3) the emission from chlorophyll a was not altered. However, the phycoerythrin emission modified by the fixation was found to be easily distinguished from other emissions, and kept its intensity high enough for detection with a fluorescence microscope. The fluorescence properties after the fixation were kept unaltered for a long period of time. Based on the results, we propose a simple method for the determination of photosynthetic pigments in individual phytoplankton cells in seas and lakes using fluorescence microscopy. Results of our tests with natural samples of phytoplankton are presented, and problems for further improvement are also discussed.  相似文献

Sampling of recruitment-associated variables of Perna perna was done approximately monthly for 14 months at intertidal locations 500 m apart, nested within sites 25 km apart. Paired with intertidal locations were nearshore locations, 600 m to sea. Sampling assessed spawning, densities of larvae in the water column and densities of late plantigrades and juveniles on the shore. Major events in each variable were synchronous over larger scales (10s of kilometres) while subsidiary events were synchronised at smaller scales, varying within sites (100s of metres) or even within locations (metres). This suggests that the processes driving major events operated over large scales while processes operating at much more local scales drove less intense, more localised events. A major spawning event occurred at all locations in May–June 1998. Weaker spawning events occurred at different times in different locations. Larvae were found on 80% of sampling occasions, densities peaking in January–March 1998 and 1999 at all locations. Plantigrades and juveniles showed less clear patterns, with considerable residual variation. There was no sign of strong coupling among variables with few significant direct or cross correlations. The major sources of variability shifted from time to space as one progressed from spawning, to plantigrade density to juvenile density. For spawning, time was the most important source (58%) of heterogeneity and space accounted for little (8%) of the total variance. For larvae and late plantigrades, time was still the most important source of variability (41% and 33%, respectively), but space was a much more substantial component. For juveniles, small-scale (residual) spatial variability dominated total variability (75%). This strongly suggests the importance of hydrography and its effects on variation in delivery of larvae to the intertidal from offshore. These findings also indicate greater spatial heterogeneity as recruits age, reflecting small-scale variations in larval delivery and the increasing importance of post-settlement mortality.Communicated by G.F.
