The mussel species Mytilus edulis L. and M. trossulus Gould coexist and hybridize throughout a large area that includes the north coast of Maine and Atlantic Canada. Previous studies provided genetic evidence for limited hybridization between the two species for mussels >15 mm. The present study used two genetic markers (ITS, Glu-5) to examine the genetic composition of early life-history stages by sampling veliger and pediveliger larvae, juveniles (<2.0 to 15.0 mm shell length) and adults (>15 mm shell length) in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, during three consecutive years (1995–1997) to determine if differential mortality limits the relative abundance of hybrids. The relative frequency of the two species and the different hybrid genotypes was similar among the larvae, juveniles and small adult mussels. The double hybrid genotype (F1-like) was the rarest genotype observed. There was no evidence for differential mortality during the early life-history stages, and factors limiting production of hybrids appear to operate before the late larval stage. The observed frequency of hybrids is probably due to a combination of pre- and postzygotic reproductive isolating mechanisms operating early in the mussels life history. M. trossulus dominated the early life-history stages, possibly due to a higher population density and a greater reproductive output than M. edulis. Differential mortality may explain the observed decrease in frequency of M. trossulus and increase in frequency of M. edulis with increasing shell length. A similar frequency of hybrid mussels from larvae to the size class of 55 mm shell length may indicate a rate of mortality intermediate between the two parental species. The M. edulis–M. trossulus hybrid zone appears to be maintained by reproductive isolating mechanisms limiting the production of hybrids and life-history differences that allow the two species to coexist.Communicated by J.P. We tested the rarely considered hypothesis that the ultraviolet portion (UVR, 280–400 nm) of the light spectrum affects patterns of recruitment in reef-building corals. The premise for this hypothesis rests in the fact that biologically relevant intensities of UVR penetrate to considerable depths (>24 m) in the clear waters surrounding many coral reefs, and that reef organisms allocate substantial resources to prevent and repair UVR damage. The ability of larvae spawned by the brown morph of the Caribbean coral, Porites astreoides, to detect and avoid UVR was assessed in petri dishes where one-half of the dish was shielded from UVR and the other exposed. Observations made every 30 min between 10:30 and 13:30 h showed significantly higher densities of larvae swimming in regions shielded from UVR. To determine how this behavior affects settlement patterns, larvae collected from P. astreoides adults at 18 m depth were released into chambers deployed at 17 m depth where they were given a choice of three different light regions in which to settle: PAR (PAR=400–700 nm), PAR+UVAR (UVAR=320–400 nm), and PAR+UVAR+UVBR (UVBR=280–320 nm). At the end of the experiment, greater numbers of P. astreoides larvae had settled in the region of the tube where UVR was reduced than would be expected if dispersion were random. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration in any reef-building coral species that planula larvae can detect UVR and that it affects their choice of a settlement site. These results indicate that the capacity to detect and avoid habitats with biologically damaging levels of UVR may be one factor contributing to the successful recruitment of coral larvae.  相似文献

Larvae of Bankia gouldi (Bartsch) and Teredo navalis L. were reared in the laboratory at various temperatures and salinities. T. navalis spawned at lower temperatures than B. gouldi. T. navalis larvae were released at temperatures from 13° to 30°C; in B. gouldi, spawning occurred from 17.5° to 30°C. Both species released offspring at salinities of 20 and 30‰. Larvae of the two species can be distinguished morphometrically at the earliest pelagic veliger stage and in the pediveliger stage. Average dimensions of newly released T. navalis larvae are 88 x 75 μ (length x height), while the youngest B. gouldi veligers measure 61 x 50 μ. Pediveligers of T. navalis (205 x 239 μ) are smaller than those of B. gouldi (221 x 260 μ). At other stages of larval development the two species appear so similar that they cannot yet readily be distinguished. Under laboratory conditions of 25°C and 30 ‰, the free-swimming life of B. gouldi to the pediveliger stage was about 10 days longer than that of T. navalis (25 and 15 days, respectively). Incubated larval development of T. navalis was estimated to be 5 days at 25°C. Potential competition between larval stages of the two species, and modification of settling behavior by dissolved humic material (Gelbstoff), is discussed.  相似文献

The establishment of symbiosis in early developmental stages is important for reef-building corals because of the need for photosynthetically derived nutrition. Corals spawn eggs and sperm, or brood planula larvae and shed them into the water. Some coral eggs or planulae directly inherit symbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.) from their parents, while others acquire them at each generation. In most species examined to date, the larvae without dinoflagellates (aposymbiotic larvae) can acquire symbionts during the larval stage, but little is known regarding the timing and detailed process of the onset of symbiosis. We examined larval uptake of symbiotic dinoflagellates in nine species of scleractinian corals, the onset of symbiosis through the early larval stages, and the distribution pattern of symbionts within the larval host, while living and with histology, of two acroporid corals under laboratory conditions. The larvae acquired symbiotic dinoflagellates during the planktonic phase in all corals examined which included Acropora digitifera, A. florida, A. intermedia, A. tenuis, Isopora palifera, Favia pallida, F. lizardensis, Pseudosiderastrea tayamai, and Ctenactis echinata. The larvae of A. digitifera and A. tenuis first acquired symbionts 6 and 5 days after fertilization, respectively. In A. digitifera larvae, this coincided with the formation of an oral pore and coelenteron. The number of symbiotic dinoflagellates increased over the experimental periods in both species. To test the hypothesis that nutrients promotes symbiotic uptake, the number of incorporated dinoflagellates was compared in the presence and absence of homogenized Artemia sp. A likelihood ratio test assuming a log-linear model indicated that Artemia sp. had a significantly positive effect on symbiont acquisition. These results suggest that the acquisition of symbiotic dinoflagellates during larval stages is in common with many coral species, and that the development of both a mouth and coelenteron play important roles in symbiont acquisition.  相似文献

The burrowing bivalve Lithophaga curta is abundant (8 to 9 per 100 cm2) in the encrusting, hermatypic coral Montipora berryi at Enewetak; this is the first report of L. curta colonizing living coral. Conversely, larvae of M. berryi appear to settle in empty bivalve burrows, tentatively identified as those of L. curta, located in dead M. berryi. Several hypotheses are suggested on the adaptive significance of substrate selection by larvae of both species and an overall hypothesis of reciprocal recruitment, describing the dynamic aspects of this apparently co-evolved relationship, is proposed.  相似文献

Some of the effets of dieldrin on the development of two species of crabs, Leptodius floridanus (Rathbun) and Panopeus herbstii (Milne-Edwards), were studied. It was found that the larvae of neither species were able to complete their development at 10 ppb dieldrin or higher in seawater. Groups of L. floridanus larvae reared in 1 ppb dieldrin in seawater had a 15 to 27% higher mortality during development to the postlarval stage than controls. The highest mortality occurred during the first zoeal stage. The time of development to the megalopal stage was as much as 11.4% longer among larvae reared in 1 ppb than among controls. The survival of L. floridanus larvae was not affected by 0.5 ppb dieldrin in seawater. The survival of P. herbstii larvae to the first crab stage was not affected by 1 ppb dieldrin in seawater at 28.5 °C, 30%.S. It was concluded that a comprehensive study of the toxicity of a given pesticide to all stages in the life cycle of a species is necessary to give even an incomplete idea of how the pesticide might affect the animal in its natural environment.  相似文献

Studies on the effects of a warm sea-water effluent under laboratory conditions required a technique for rearing batches of shipworm larvae from settling stage to maturity, and a way of radiographing adults that would picture them fully extenbed within their tunnels. Ways of infesting small pieces of spruce with the newly-released larvae of Lyrodus pedicellatus Quatrefages, and of radiographing them (enelosed in plastic bags full of artificial sea water) are described in detail, and the fate of a single generation is followed when infested pieces were kept in artificial sea water at two different temperatures. Using these techniques, it was found that the etenidia do not rotate during tunnelling, and that L. pedicellatus depends upon the wood-softening activities of micro-organisms to be able to stay within the wood.  相似文献

Studies conducted at Kwajalein Atoll (9°N; 168°E) in early 1988 reveal that marine organisms are commonly rafted into the area on drift pumice, drift wood and other flotsam. Coralskeletons on pumice provide the most useful quantitative data because they persist after rafted motile organisms have departed and rafted sessile forms have decomposed or been scavenged. The estimated minimum number of pumice fragments carrying corals into Kwajalein Atoll during its geological history is on the order of 109, with a more realistic estimate in excess of 1011. The estimated number of coral colonies rafted into the atoll would probably have to be increased several-fold if rafting on floating organic materials such as wood, charcoal, nuts and seeds could be determined. In the present study, a typical sample of beached pumice from Kwajalein Atoll contained 103 coral colonies per m3 of bulk pumice fragments. Major pumice rafting episodes frequently result from volcanic eruptions. Estimates based on the observed K wajalein coral fouling rate and literature values for drift pumice production suggest that 105 colonies could be rafted through the tropics by the smallest reported pumice-producing events and up to 1012 colonies for large events. In the present study, most of the rafted corals that were recovered belong to species of the genus Pocillopora, but speccics of Porites and Millepora were also collected. Analysis of surface-current data and reported drift patterns for pumice, logs, drift bottles and wrecks suggests that movement of rafted corals and drifting larvae is predominantly from peripheral areas of low coral-species diversity into centers of high coral diversity. Coral diversity centers might be viewed as areas of coral species accumulation rather than centers of coral species origin.  相似文献

The swimming abilities of larval fishes are important for their survival, potentially affecting their ability to avoid predators, obtain food and control dispersal patterns. Near settlement swimming abilities may also influence spatial and temporal patterns of recruitment. We examined Critical speed (U-crit) swimming ability in late stage larvae of 89 species of coral reef fishes from the Great Barrier Reef and the Caribbean. Coefficients of variation in U-crit calculated at the individual level were high (28.4%), and this was not explained by differences in size or condition factor of these same larvae. Among species U-crit ranged from 5.5 cm s−1 to 100.8 cm s−1 (mean=37.3 cm s−1), with 95% of species able to swim faster than the average current speed around Lizard Island, suggesting that most species should be capable of influencing their spatial and temporal patterns of settlement. Inter-specific differences in swimming ability (at both the family and species levels) were significantly correlated with size and larval morphology. Correlations were found between swimming performance and propulsive area, fineness ratio and aspect ratio, and these morphological parameters may prove useful for predicting swimming ability in other taxa. Overall, the swimming speeds of larvae from the same families at the two locations were relatively similar, although the Lutjanidae and Acanthuridae from the Caribbean were significantly slower than those from the great barrier reef. Differences in swimming speed and body form among late stage larvae suggests that they will respond differently to factors influencing survival and transport during their pelagic phase, as well as habitat use following settlement.  相似文献

The early ontogenetic stages of the sub-Antarctic king crab Lithodes santolla were analyzed for the presence and activities of a set of important digestive enzymes. The eggs and non-feeding larvae (zoea I-III, megalopa) showed high activities of esterases, phosphatases, and exopeptidases indicating the enzymatic ability to utilize endogeneous yolk reserves. SDS-PAGE showed a continuous decrease of proteins or proteids in the range of 59–81 kDa during ontogenetic development from the eggs through the zoeal stages to the first juvenile crab stage, CI. This reduction reflects the degradation of storage compounds during lecithotrophic larval development. Activities of the endopeptidases, trypsin and chymotrypsin, were low in eggs and larvae but increased significantly in the first juvenile crab stage. These enzymes typically facilitate the first steps of proteolysis in the extra-cellular spaces of the midgut gland and in the stomach. Their scarcity indicates that the larvae of L. santolla are physiologically not prepared to digest external food. This ability seems to appear first in the CI stage. Extracts of juvenile midgut glands and the gastric fluids of adults showed high activities of a variety of digestive enzymes including phosphatases, carbohydrases, as well as endo- and exopeptidases. High activities of digestive enzymes in adults may compensate for scarce food supply and rate-limiting low temperatures in the predominantly sub-Antarctic habitats of L. santolla.  相似文献

Seven species of marine bryozoans were examined for the presence of bacteria associated with the larvae. In three species (Bugula neritina, B. pacifica, and B. simplex), rod-shaped bacteria were consistently observed in the pallial sinus of the larvae, independent of geographic location, year, or season. Larvae of closely related bryozoans (B. stolonifera, B. turrita, Scrupocellaria bertholetti, and Tricellaria occidentalis) occurring sympatrically with those containing bacteria lacked this apparent symbiosis. Those bryozoans examined that possessed the bacteria-larva association are among the most frequently encountered fouling bryozoans.  相似文献

Anthelia glauca Lamarck, 1816 is a gonochoric, external-brooding soft coral found in KwaZulu-Natal. It is reproductively active in the summer months. The development of gametes produced in late summer is arrested in winter. Several stages of gametes are found at the base of the polyps, and female polyps produce several cycles of larvae over an extended breeding period of 4 to 5 months. Larvae are brooded in a unique pharyngeal brooding pouch not yet described in other coral species. The brood pouch consists of an expansion of the pharynx with constrictions proximal and distal to the embryos and larvae. Our data suggest that egg transfer and fertilization occur at full moon and the mature larvae are released after new moon. Scrobicularia plana Da Costa and Donax vittatus L. were reared in the laboratory through settlement. Fertilizable eggs were obtained by perfusing the ovary with 5% 0.1 M ammonium hydroxyde in sea water. S. plana eggs have a thick chorion, inside which the early larval stages develop; they hatch as straight-hinge larvae more than 60 h after fertilization. This brood protection is considered to be an adaptation to osmotic pressure changes and pollution in the environment. D. vittatus eggs have a very thin chorion and are unprotected. Further development is planktotrophic and very similar for the two species. Under laboratory conditions, the pediveliger stage is attained 3 weeks after fertilization and settlement occurs 1 week thereafter. S. plana spat stop growing until a suitable substratum is available. Meanwhile they undergo a byssus drifting important for postlarval dispersion. Post larvae resume growth as soon as a small quantity of fine sand is added to the rearing jar. The exhalant siphon is developed first, when the post larvae reach a length of 600 m; the inhalant siphon is formed later, at a length of approximately 900 m. Evolution from the larval hinge to the juvenile hinge stage occurs sooner in S. plana than in D. vittatus. Comparison of laboratory larval development with field development indicates that spawning occurs in June and August for S. plana in North Wales (UK).  相似文献

The influence of microbial films on larval settlement was studied for sympatric species of cellularioid cheilostome bryozoans (Bugula simplex, B. stolonifera, and B. turrita). Settlement experiments were conducted in the laboratory in 1981 with and without a choice of filmed or unfilmed substrates. When given a choice of substrates, the larvae of all three bryozoan species significantly preferred the filmed substrate. When not given a choice of substrates, both B. simplex and B. turrita larvae tended not to settle on the unfilmed substrate, while the filmed and unfilmed substrates were equally attractive to B. stolonifera. Microbial films enhanced the settlement of all three species.  相似文献

Response rates to tactile stimulation and subsequent escape speeds were measured using a video-recording system during early development and starvation of fish larvae. The species studied included the yolk-sac larvae of Clyde and Baltic herring (Clupea harengus L.), cod (Gadus morhua L.), flounder (Platichthys flesus L.) and older larvae of Clyde herring. The proportion of larvae responding (response rate) was initially about 20 to 25% in herring and 35 to 40% in cod and flounder using a probe, but about 70 to 80% using the sucking action of a pipette in all species except flounder. Both response rates and escape speeds (mean and maximum) tended to peak 1 to 2 d before the PNR (point-of-no-return, when 50% of larvae are too weak to feed), then decreased slowly during further starvation. An inter-species comparison showed that the highest recorded mean escape speeds (measured over a period of 200 ms) and highest maximum escape speeds (over 20 ms) ranged from 5.7 to 8.6 BL/s (body lengths/s) and 12.1 to 16.1 BL/s, respectively. The larvae made directional responses away from the stimulus only when they developed and reached the feeding stage.  相似文献

Larvae of the Antarctic brachiopod Liothyrella uva (Broderip, 1833) were released by brooding females between 10 and 15 January 1992. They were collected and cultured for the ensuing 45 d. At release they were at the gastrula stage, and were recognisable as the usual brachiopod three-lobed larva from around 18 d after release. At 22 d post-release, larvae began to congregate under shell fragments placed in culture vessels as potential settlement substrata. However, the larvae showed no signs of settlement which, combined with the absence of many of the attributes of mature larvae seen in previous studies, was taken as evidence that these larvae had not reached fully competent stages. Previous work had shown that L. uva spawns in October, indicating that the developmental period lasts for a minimum of between 115 and 160 d. The release and subsequent development of larvae also shows that what was previously thought to be a brooding species combines a long brooding period with a free-swimming phase. If this is true of other brachiopod species, then there may need to be a recategorization of some species from brooding to combined brooding and free-swimming developmental types. Even though the development period in L. uva was likely to have been underestimated because a fully competent stage was not reached, a comparison with development rates for temperate species indicated a slowing of between 8 and 70 times. This dramatic slowing of development rate in brachiopods now joins similar data previously reported for echinoderms and nemerteans, suggesting that this is a very widespred, perhaps universal, attribute of Antarctic marine invertebrates.  相似文献

There are few data on the reproductive biology of coral species living in temperate zones, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea. Leptopsammia pruvoti is a solitary coral that is commonly found in sea caves and under overhangs throughout the Mediterranean basin and along European coasts from Portugal to southern England. In this paper, we describe its annual reproductive cycle in the eastern Ligurian Sea near the city of Leghorn (Tuscany, Italy). Polyps were sexually mature at 3 mm in length (maximum diameter of the oral disc), were dioecious with a sex ratio of 1:1, and brooded their larvae. The maturation of spermaries took 12 months and oocytes 24 months. The rate of gonad development increased significantly from November to January, fertilization occurred from January to April and planulation during May and June. Seasonal variations in water temperature and photoperiod may have played an important role in regulating reproductive events. The amount of energy devoted to male gametogenesis (quantified by gonad index) was significantly higher in the sex separated species L. pruvoti than in the hermaphroditic dendrophylliid Balanophyllia europaea, whose reproduction has been studied in a previous work. We hypothesize that this difference is due to the contrasting sexuality or fertilization biology of these two species (cross-fertilization in the sex separated L. pruvoti versus possibly self-fertilization in the hermaphroditic B. europaea). Greater male sexual allocation in reproductive strategies characterized by dioecism or cross-fertilization when compared to those characterized by hermaphroditism or self-fertilization is common in plant mating systems. In relation to other solitary dendrophylliids, L. pruvoti presents an ‘r’-reproductive strategy.  相似文献

The pattern of settlement over time of three broadcast spawning coral species (Cyphastrea serailia, Acanthastrea lordhowensis, and Goniastrea australensis) from the Solitary Islands (30°00′S; 153°20′E) was studied in 1995 and 1996 in order to determine the maximum length of time these larvae could remain in the water column and still retain the ability to settle and metamorphose. Larvae were maintained in aquaria and the number which had settled on biologically-conditioned tile pairs was monitored every 5 to 10 d. While the majority of larvae settled quickly after becoming competent, some larvae survived and settled for extended periods after spawning. Competency periods ranged from 26 d for C. serailia to 56 d for G. australensis and 78 d for A. lordhowensis. These data greatly extend the known competency periods for larvae of broadcast-spawning corals and indicate the potential for transport of broadcast-spawned coral larvae over large distances. Medium to long-distance larval dispersal of the species studied provides a mechanism for their widespread distribution in subtropical regions, on reefs which are often widely spaced and relatively isolated. To test whether coral planulae recruit randomly to different coral reef habitats or have specific substratum preferences, the settling behavior of planulae from two shallow water coral species from Pago Bay, Guam (13°25.02N, 144°47.30E) were examined in the laboratory in June and July of 1995. Goniastrea retiformis is generally restricted to the shallow reef front (<10 m depth) in areas dominated by crustose coralline algae (CCA), while Stylaraea punctata is abundant on inner reef flats were CCA coverage is low and sand and carbonate rubble covered by biofilms is common. When presented with four substrata (1) carbonate rock scrubbed free of biofilm and dried as a control, (2) the CCA Hydrolithon reinboldii, (3) the CCA Peyssonelia sp., and (4) naturally conditioned carbonate rubble covered by a biofilm, G. retiformis larvae showed a significant preference for H. reinboldii, and S. punctata larvae for the carbonate biofilm treatment. The preference shown by S. punctata larvae for biofilmed surfaces did not diminish with increasing larval age up to 11 days. These results suggest that the larvae of both species are capable of habitat selection, and that the preferred substrata among those tested bears a relationship to the habitats in which adult colonies were found. Capture success of the medusa Aurelia aurita preying on various developmental stages of fish larvae was measured together with larval reactivity and escape speed after being stung. These experiments were conducted in the spring of 1983 with A. aurita medusae collected from Loch Etive, Scotland and laboratory-reared larvae of Gadus morhua L., Platichthys flesus L., Pleuronectes platessa L. and Clupea harengus L. Capture success of the medusae increased with medusa size, but decreased with advancing larval development. Smaller species of larvae were more vulnerable to capture. Larval reactivity to encounters with medusae increased with advancing development, and larger species of larvae were more reactive to encounters. Larval escape swimming speeds also increased with advancing larval development and size. These results indicate that earlier stages of larvae within a species and smaller species of larvae at a given stage are more vulnerable to predation by medusae since they are less reactive to encounters. Apparently they are more susceptible to the effects of neurotoxins. Predation rates on different developmental stages of herring larvae are documented and compared with rates predicted by a predation model. Predictions fell within the range of observed predation rates, but tended to overestimate rates by larger medusae feeding on larger herring larvae. This indicates the possibility of predator satiation and/or behavioural avoidance.  相似文献
