Basiphilous, open, species-rich vegetation types of young dune slacks have declined throughout Europe in recent years, and
have largely been replaced by often acidophilous, tall marsh and scrub vegetation. This succession appears to be accelerated
by a decrease in the discharge of calcareous groundwater from sandy ridges or small dune hummocks. The present study deals
with spatial and temporal variation in the chemical composition of the groundwater in the upper metres of the soil of a degraded
dune slack complex on the Dutch barrier island of Schiermonnikoog, with emphasis on (1) groundwater composition, (2) water
level and (3) decalcification patterns. The main aim was to assess perspectives for restoring basiphilous vegetation types
which had been abundant in this slack from 1954 to 1977. The depth of decalcification was related to former hydrological conditions
along a transect of 200 m. Acidifying effects of rainfall were reflected in the chemical composition of the groundwater below
small dune hummocks within the slack. Distinct precipitation water lenses, poor in dissolved ions, were formed under the dune
hummocks during a wet period. This microtopography did not contribute to the discharge of calcareous groundwater to lowlying
parts of the slack. Here, groundwater showed decreasing concentrations of the dissolved ions after a rain shower. Except for
the peripheral sections of the slack—where upward seepage of groundwater (exfiltration)still occurs—infiltration conditions
are now dominant in the slack. The consequences of the present hydrological conditions for restoration are briefly discussed. 相似文献

The loss of organic matter and nutrients due to a natural fire in a Danish coastal dune heath system (175 ha) was studied
for three heath types: dryEmpetrum nigrum heath, moistE. nigrum-Vaccinium uliginosum heath, and wetErica tetralix-Molinia coerulea heath. The highest loss of organic matter, as well as N, P and K, was found in the moist heath (67%, 68%, 20% and 25% respectively).
The lowest loss was found in the wet heath (35%, 28%, 14%, and 11% respectively). The loss in the dry heath was intermediate.
For the burnt heath in total, loss of organic matter, N, P and K of about 13000, 192, 10 and 6 tons respectively, was estimated.
Processes of nutrient loss by fire and regeneration of nutrients are discussed. 相似文献

Topography and vegetation of restored dunes on a developed barrier island were examined after a large-scale beach nourishment
project. Restoration began in 1993 using sand-trapping fences andAmmophila breviligulata Fern. plantings. Subsequent growth of dunes was favored by installing new fences and suspending beach raking to accommodate
nesting birds. Plant species richness, percent cover of vegetation, and height ofA. breviligulata were sampled in 1999 on seven shore perpendicular transects in six dune microhabitats (backdune, primary crest, mid-foredune,
swale, seaward-most fenced ridge, incipient dune on the backbeach).
A total of 26 plant taxa were found at all seven sites. Richness and percent cover were greatest in the backdune and crest,
especially in locations that predated the 1992 nourishment. Richness was greater where fences enhanced stabilization. Fences
initially compensate for time and space and allow vegetation to develop rapidly, but maintenance nourishment is required to
protect against wave erosion and ensure long-term viability of habitat. An expanded environmental gradient is an option, where
beach nourishment provides space for a species-rich crest and backdune to develop, while the incipient dune remains dynamic.
Options where space is restricted include a dynamic, full-sized seaward section of a naturally functioning dune (truncated
gradient) or a spatially restricted sampler of a wider natural dune (compressed gradient) maintained using fences. Expanded
and truncated gradients may become self-sustaining and provide examples of natural cycles of change. Compressed gradients
provide greater species richness and flood protection for the available space, but habitats are vulnerable to erosion, and
resident views may be impaired. 相似文献

The impact of grazing on spider communities in a mesophytic calcareous dune grassland 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
During 1994–1995 and 1997–1998 spiders were sampled with pitfall traps in a botanically rich, mesophytic, calcareous dune
grassland in Belgium. As a consequence of intensive cattle grazing, vegetation variation in a large part of the area had diminished.
The study area was also patchily grazed by rabbits. Community analysis with TWINSPAN revealed five distinct spider communities.
Ecological differentiation was best explained by combination of the habitat variables: distance from grazed or non-grazed
vegetation,Rosa pimpinellifolia cover and grass cover in both summer and winter. Species diversity was highest in the border zone between the cattle-grazed
and non cattle-grazed sites.
Correlation of the most abundant spider species with the vegetation determinants explains the ecological differentiation between
the spider communities. Species were classified into seven major groups that reflect the species’ habitat preferences. The
group showing clear association with non cattle-grazed, tall vegetation consists of common species. Characteristic species
for the intensively cattle-grazed sites are common aeronauts and rare species such asWalckenaeria stylifrons, Mastigusa arietina, Ceratinopsis romana andPardosa monticola. The latter are shown to be dependent on ungrazed vegetation for juvenile development and overwintering. Intensive grazing
results in homogeneous short vegetation, which can only be colonized by ‘open ground’ species with a well-developed dispersal
capacity, or by species which are not dependent on litter-rich situations for juvenile development. An extensive cattle grazing
regime results in a patchy mosaic grassland where, in addition to the above mentioned groups of species, other species survive
by migrating between the buffered litter rich ungrazed vegetation and the short vegetation. Additionally, some typical and
rare species prefer the transition zone between the grazed and the ungrazed vegetation because they are associated with specific
habitat structures or inhabiting ant-species. 相似文献

This study forms part of the Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Vegetation in the Mediterranean SEa (United Nation
Environmental Program). It was carried out in June 2000 in the Farwà Lagoon, Libya. The mapping of the main benthic vegetation
was achieved by compiling the field observations (transect method), and remote sensing of SPOT satellite images. The phytobenthos
in the Farwà lagoon covers an area of 1820 ha (65%). Three benthic macrophyte species dominate, namely the marine phanerogamsCymodocea nodosa andPosidonia oceanica, and the algaCaulerpa prolifera.
DeadPosidonia oceanica leaves (litter) form veritable mounds in the vicinity of the openings leading to open sea. These leaves, which come from
the coastal sea, are brought into the lagoon by currents and tides; their decomposition will lead to high oxygen consumption
and the release of hydrogen sulphide.
The phenological data ofPosidonia oceanica shoots sampled in the lagoon are similar to those from other stations in the Mediterranean.
Conversely, the lepidochronological parameters of shoots sampled in the central part of the lagoon exhibit values that are
substantially higher than those generally recorded in the Mediterranean. The mean number of leaves produced annually is 9.9
(mean value for the Mediterranean: 7.5) and the rhizome growth rate is of 35.7 mm.yr−1 (mean value for the Mediterranean: 7.5 mm.yr−1). This hypersaline environment would seem to provide optimum growth conditions for the speciesPosidonia oceanica. 相似文献

Dune hummocks (small aeolian dunes formed by sand deposition in and around pioneer plants) are the smallest vegetated dune
unit; they occur along the entire South African coastline but are poorly studied. Structural properties and distribution of
the two main hummock-forming plants:Arctotheca populifolia (a pioneer species with fast growth rate and rapid turnover) andGazania rigens (a later colonizer with slower growth) were investigated. A marked vegetation succession exists across the floor of the slack
as a result of the migration of transverse dune ridges across the slack.Arctotheca hummocks were initiated on the newly exposed eastern margin of the slack, and were replaced about midway across the width
of the slack byGazania hummocks. Hummocks increased in size with distance from the eastern side of the slack.Gazania hummocks attain a greater vegetation height, support a greater vegetation complexity and mass, and attain a larger maximum
size thanArctotheca hummocks. Succession, defined as both the replacement of plant species as well as site modification within the plants over
time, was evident. Since the growth form and dynamics determine (1) the ability of plants to trap wind-borne soil and detritus,
(2) the shape of the hummocks, and (3) the habitat complexity available to spiders and insects, the ecology of the hummocks
is probably determined largely by the vegetation characteristics of the hummock-forming plants. 相似文献

Sexually selected traits that act as signals of quality often display some degree of condition dependence. In birds, condition
dependence of ornamental plumage is often mediated by production costs related to acquisition or allocation of dietary resources.
White plumage ornaments, however, have often been assumed to be inexpensive because their production requires neither pigment
nor specialized feather structure. In male dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), the size of a white patch on the tail contributes to attractiveness and mating success. Using captive males, we examined
the effects of diet quality on the size and brightness of the tail-white patch. After removing four tail feathers to induce
replacement, we maintained subjects on a subsistence (low-protein) or enriched (high-protein) diet while induced feathers
grew. Birds that received an enriched diet grew their feathers more quickly and grew larger, brighter white patches. Feather
growth rate was positively correlated with the increase in the size of the tail-white patch, a relationship that was stronger
in the subsistence diet group. However, within diet treatments, faster-grown feathers were slightly duller. Taken together,
these results suggest that variation in diet quality may lead to condition-dependent expression of tail white and that condition
dependence may be stronger in more stressful environments. We suggest a mechanism by which increased feather growth rate may
lead to an increase in the size of the tail-white patch and discuss potential trade-offs between signal size and brightness. 相似文献

Summary This contribution presents an attempt to measure the path of habitat and vegetation succession in a coastal dune system (Kenfig
Burrows, South Wales) using remote sensing and GIS. The loss of slack habitats associated with the continuing stabilization
of this dune system is a major cause for concern. These habitats support a range of plant species, including the rare fen
orchid,Liparis loeselii, as well as other hydrophytes. A decrease in their areal extent implies a reduction in biodiversity. To quantify the overall
rate and spatial dimension of these changes, a series of aerial photographs dating from 1962 to 1994 were digitized and analysed
in an image processing system. The resultant maps. transferred to a vector-based GIS, were used to derive a transition matrix
for the dune system over this period of time. The results indicate that there has been a marked reduction in the total area
of bare sand (19.6% of the dune system in 1962, but only 1.5% in 1994) and a decline in both the areal extent and the number
of dune slacks. Over the same period of time, there has been an increase inSalix repens dominated habitats, at the expense of pioneer species. Analysis of the habitat maps, together with hydrological data, within
the GIS suggests that even the dry slacks have the potential for further greening and to support invasive species. In terms
of habitat management however, there is still scope to restore many of the slacks to their original state. It is estimated
that at least 24% of the area occupied by partially and moderately vegetated slacks could be rehabilitated. 相似文献

The coastline of South Africa is characterized by extensive dune fields which are threatened by development, and thus the
demand of stabilization of drift sand will increase. The non-invasive alien grass speciesAmmophila arenaria is at present the dominant sand stabilizer. Due to its foreign origin and invasiveness in North America its use was criticized
and indigenous sand-binding species would be preferred. The germination requirements of the nativeArctotheca populifolia, Ipomoea pes-caprae. Myrica cordifolia andScaevola plumieri were investigated. The results showed that for all four species the total germination time and germination phase could be
shortened and germination success (number of germinated seeds) improved. The different scarification and stratification treatments
broke the dormancy ofI. pes-caprae, M. cordifolia andS. plumieri, whereas the seeds ofA. populifolia were not dormant. Seeds ofI. pes-caprae andM. cordifolia had induced an innate dormancy, respectively, whereas the type of dormancy in seeds ofS. plumieri dormancy processes remained unknown. 相似文献

Costs of switching social groups for dominant and subordinate dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Daniel A. Cristoll 《Behavioral ecology and sociobiology》1995,37(2):93-101
I quantified the costs of switching from a familiar to an unfamiliar flock for captive dark-eyed juncos (Junco h. hyemalis) by measuring several physiological and behavioral variables before and after flock switching. Birds that were initially dominant dropped in status in unfamiliar flocks, and experienced increased metabolic rates, while subordinate birds appeared to undergo less physiological change when switching flocks. This difference occurred despite a lack of any rank-related differences in the effects of joining a new flock on rates of aggression, weight change, access to food, or plasma corticosterone levels. These results suggest that for dominant, but not subordinate, individuals there is a measurable metabolic cost to joining a new social group, even in the absence of adverse factors such as food limitation. Dominant individuals may be less likely than subordinates to leave familiar flocks because of their higher metabolic costs when joining a new social group. 相似文献

To plan for the habitat needs of forest songbirds of conservation concern, managers need to understand how spatial heterogeneity
in forest conditions influences habitat quality. I used difference boundary detection (wombling) and spatially constrained
clustering to delineate boundaries in various combinations of four forest vegetation variables (understory height, understory
density, percent deciduous vs. conifer understory, and percent canopy closure) in two Michigan northern hardwood forests.
My goal was to identify vegetation boundaries that corresponded with boundaries in an understory-dependent songbird’s distribution,
and with boundaries in demographic measures for this songbird that indicate habitat quality (e.g., occupancy by older vs.
yearling males, reproductive success). Both forests were actively-managed, mature stands: The first site (78 ha) was heavily
deer-browsed (HB), with many browse-resistant conifers in the understory, and the second (62 ha) was less-browsed (LB), with
deciduous-dominated understory. I compared the vegetation difference and cluster boundaries to difference boundaries based
on 6 years of distribution and demographic data for black-throated blue warblers (Dendroica caerulescens). At the HB site, warbler boundaries overlapped strongly with vegetation boundaries that included all four variables, and
clustering effectively divided the habitat into areas with different warbler occupancy and demographic characteristics. At
the LB site, warbler distribution showed high overlap with difference and cluster boundaries based on just the height and
density of understory vegetation, and cluster boundaries again effectively partitioned the study area into sites that varied
in habitat quality. Thus, geographic boundary analysis is likely to be a useful tool for identifying key vegetation variables
for management, and for delineating clusters (habitat patches) within sites that capture differences in habitat quality.

There have been significant efforts to establish a widely usable method for the prediction of trace element bioavailability
in soil. In this work, we used extraction with 0.01 M CaCl2 and 0.05 M ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to estimate bioavailable concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in a
soil moderately contaminated with trace elements 1 and 2 years after the application of three amendments. The experiment took
place in a field plot of a soil affected by the toxic spill of the Aznalcóllar mine. Four treatments were established: three
with amendments (biosolid compost, sugar beet lime, and a combination of leonardite plus sugar beet lime) and a control without
amendment. Trace element concentrations of two representative species in each year (Lamarckia aurea and Poa annua in 2004 and Lamarckia aurea and Bromus rubens in 2005) were analyzed. The results showed a positive effect of the amendments both on soil and vegetation. Trace element
concentrations in plants growing in the amended subplots were lower than those in plants from nonamended subplots. As a rule,
concentrations of CaCl2-soluble Cd, Cu, and Zn in soil were positively correlated with trace elements in plants, whereas EDTA extraction was scarcely
correlated with plant concentration. For species of grasses, especially L. aurea, CaCl2 seems to be a more suitable extractant to predict trace element bioavailability in this contaminated soil. 相似文献

This study reports the results of restoration management on sand dune environments along the coastal belt of the Castelporziano
nature reserve (Rome, Italy) and the subsequent monitoring phases to test the sustainability of the ‘soft techniques’ applied.
In the area concerned, over a length of ca. 3 km, 40 dunes were built up along with three belts located at <40 m, 40–70 m,
and >70 m, respectively, from the shoreline. On each of 38 dunes 20 individuals ofAmmophila littoralis were planted; this species is one of the local autochthonous species considered particularly suitable for stabilizing sand
dunes. After one year, two years and five years, respectively the changes in height and surface of each dune, the survival
rates ofA. littoralis, and its changes in cover, the appearance of new shoots and the establishment of new species were observed. A progressive
increase in species number, which five years after the restoration amounted to about 60% of those characterizing the natural
dunes, was reported indicating a progressive trend towards populations similar to natural ones. In the colonization of new
species there is a prevalence of theSporobolus-Elymetum farcti and theSalsolo Kali-Cakiletum maritimae association, while the species established successively refer to theEchinophoro spinosae-Ammophiletum arundinaceae association and theCrucianellion maritimae alliance as occurring in natural successions.
This succession runs parallel to the natural dune colonization processes. In particular, the data regarding survival, cover
and number of vegetative shoots indicate that the dune belt between 40 and 70 m from the sea is the one most suitable for
restoration.
Some changes in dune morphology was observed: the height of the artificial dunes tended to decrease considerably in the five
years of observation, whereas a progressive increase in their surface area was observed. During the study period.A littoralis favoured the establishment of new species, but as yet exercises no action on increasing dune height. 相似文献

Field observation and laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate sperm competition and patterns of sperm fertilization under different experimental conditions in the carrion ball-roller beetle Canthon cyanellus cyanellus. Males in nature can mate with females whose spermathecae contains fertile sperm from other males. Sperm precedence was investigated using a visible genetic marker. The progeny of red (homozygous recessive) virgin females mated once with a red male and afterward, once with a green beetle (homozygous dominant) and vice versa, revealed that regardless of its color, the last male to mate fertilized c.a. 50% of the eggs, suggesting strong sperm competition. Males were able to achieve higher levels of paternity (more than 80%) when mated ad libitum with previously mated females, although large amount of variance in paternity does not exclude the possibility of first male sperm precedence or female cryptic choice. These results suggest that repeated mating and sperm replacement are the mechanisms by which last males achieve sperm precedence. 相似文献

Hosts of brood parasites have evolved the ability to discriminate non-mimetic and even mimetic eggs, but not non-mimetic chicks. Here we demonstrate that the great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius does not provide its magpie Pica pica host with a super-normal stimulus that helps to avoid recognition, because single cuckoo chicks introduced into otherwise unparasitized magpie nests are not fed at a higher frequency than single magpie chicks introduced to parasitized magpie nests. Another series of experiments demonstrated that magpies have the ability to discriminate cuckoo chicks, mainly when these are introduced at the end of the nestling period, and especially when the cuckoo chick together with a magpie chick is presented to adult magpies outside the nest. This supports the idea that cuckoos exploit the obligatory reaction of magpies to feed all young that have been hatched in their nests and whose signatures they have learnt. Furthermore, the experimental cuckoo chicks in parasitized magpie nests were more likely to be accepted than they were in non-parasitized nests. This supports the hypothesis that magpies may learn to recognise their own nestlings as those present in the nest and may indicate that a comparison between cuckoo and magpie nestlings is the basis of discrimination. 相似文献

A grazing experiment was started in 1984 and 1989 respectively, in two parts of a dune grassland in the nature reserve ‘Zwanenwater’,
North Holland; a third part with similar geology and topography was used as a control area and not grazed. An evaluation of
the effects of grazing on vegetation patterns, species composition, vegetation structure and humus form was made with the
help of vegetation maps from 1986 and 1992 as well as field surveys.
Dense tall-grass communities dominated byAmmophila arenaria increased over the period 1986–1992 in the grazed areas, and especially in the non-grazed area (increase in area to 20 %,
22 % and 50 %, respectively). Open communities decreased in the grazed areas, but are still prevalent, while in the ungrazed
area they virtually disappeared, with the result that the present percentage areas are 53 %, 38 % and 17 %.
Field survey data were classified by TWINSPAN producing four vegetation types. These occur more or less equally in grazed
and ungrazed areas, albeit with different percentage areas: (1) open vegetation dominated byCorynephorus canescens; (2) open vegetation characterized byKoeleria macrantha; (3) heathland dominated byEmpetrum nigrum; and (4) tall-grass communities dominated byAmmophila arenaria. Within a vegetation type, species composition was only marginally affected by grazing regime.
Within the open communities the number of species, vegetation height, vegetation cover and soil organic horizons were not
affected by grazing. In the tall-grass communities the number of species was significantly larger and the height of the vegetation
significantly lower in the area grazed since 1984. In the heathland community the number of species and cover of the moss
layer were significantly higher in the 1984 area and ectorganic and endorganic horizons significantly thicker in the ungrazed
area.
It is suggested that these effects are the result of an increased availability of light, but possibly also of a decreased
stock of organic matter and nutrients, due to a decreased input of litter and accelerated rates of decomposition.

Immigration into locally adapted populations has been suggested, among other potential causes, to maintain genetic variance in fitness necessary for good-genes models. Using a reciprocal transplant experiment we examined whether females prefer native to transferred males in the grasshopper Chorthippus biguttulus. On average, native and transferred males did not differ in their attractiveness, measured as female response rate to playbacks of male acoustic courtship signals. In line with this result, we found no significant effect of transfer on body size, condition, fluctuating asymmetry or song traits. However, the reciprocal transplant experiment showed that environmental conditions did influence body condition and maximum loudness of the calling song, but that the genetic origin of male grasshoppers had no significant effect on any of the analysed traits.Communicated by L. Summary We tested the role of a grasshopper defensive secretion in deterring lizard predation. Adults, but not young larvae, of the chemically defended lubber grasshopperRomalea guttata (=microptera) froth a volatile secretion when attacked by predators. The lizardAnolis carolinensis failed to strike juvenile lubbers (which lack secretion) in laboratory trials. Survivorship of palatable crickets loaded with secretion offered toA. carolinensis was not significantly different from survivorship of control crickets. In experiments designed to investigate if lizards learn an aversion to the secretion, striking times forSceloporus undulatus fed wax worms coated with secretion were not significantly different over three days of trials. Three primary conclusions are drawn from these data. First, the secretion may not be necessary for lubber protection from lizards. Second, lubber secretion does not appear to deter lizards from attacking or eating prey items. Third, lizards do not appear to develop an aversion to the secretion. 相似文献
