The French Atlantic coast contains large highly productive intertidal mudflats that are colonised by juveniles of numerous flatfish species, including the common sole (Solea solea, L.). These ecosystems are also heavily exploited by the shellfish farming industry. Intensive bivalve culture is associated with substantial biodeposition (1–6 t-dw ha−1 day−1), which directly or indirectly contributes to increase exopolysaccharide (EPS) concentrations at the interface between water column and seabed. EPS are long-chain molecules organised into colloids, which influence rheological properties of water, particularly viscosity. Increased water viscosity had consequences for ventilatory activity of juvenile flatfish, whereby the minimal pressure required to ventilate the medium increases directly with EPS concentration. Moreover, the critical EPS concentration ([EPS]crit) at which water was no longer able to flow through the branchial basket ranged from almost nil to over 30 mg l−1, depending on species and size. [EPS]crit was lower in small individuals and individuals from species with high metabolic rates (turbot and plaice). These differences may depend upon gill and bucco-branchial cavity morphometrics. The ventilatory workload of sole increased with viscosity to a maximum at 2 mg EPS l−1. Viscosity might, therefore, be a limiting factor for flatfish post larvae, which colonise the intertidal mudflats, depending upon their size and species. EPS concentrations in the field can reach 15 mg l−1. A selective effect is conceivable but remains to be estimated in the field.  相似文献

The development of gill chloride cells was examined in premetamorphic larvae (leptocephali) and juveniles (glass eels) of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica. Branchial chloride cells were detected by immunocytochemistry using an antiserum specific for Na+,K+-ATPase. The specificity and availability of the antiserum for the detection of Japanese eel chloride cells were confirmed by Western blot analysis. The chloride cells first appeared on the developing gill filaments in a mid larval stage of leptocephalus (32.2 mm). Both immunoreactivity and the number of chloride cells gradually increased as the fish grew to a late stage of leptocephalus over 54 mm. In glass eels just after metamorphosis, gill lamellae developed from the gill filaments, and a rich population of chloride cells was observed in the gill filaments. In glass eels collected at a coastal area, chloride cells were extensively distributed in the gill filaments. The chloride cell size decreased progressively in glass eels transferred from seawater (SW) to freshwater (FW), whereas there was no difference in cell number. In contrast, some Na+,K+-ATPase immunoreaction distinct from typical chloride cells was observed in the gill lamellae throughout FW-transferred fish, but disappeared in control fish maintained in SW for 14 days. These findings indicate that the gill and gill chloride cells developed slowly during the extremely long larval stage, followed by rapid differentiation during a short period of metamorphosis. The excellent euryhalinity of glass eels may be due to the presence of the filament chloride cells and lamellar Na+,K+-ATPase-immunoreaction, presumably being responsible for SW and FW adaptation, respectively.  相似文献

The spatial relationships and linkage of the detrital flows among the water column, the sediment and the oyster Crassostrea gigas cultured in the water column were examined by using stable carbon isotopes (δ13C) in a tropical shallow lagoon from October 1996 to June 1997. The lagoon is located in southwestern Taiwan and is isolated from the sea by sand barriers except at two tidal inlets. It receives freshwater mainly from two rivers. A total of 12 stations were set up along three transect lines, each running across the lagoon from riverine to tidal inlet localities. The δ13C values of the water-column POM exhibited a marked sea–river gradient, with values depleted from a high of −21.7‰ at seaward stations to a low of −28.2‰ at riverine stations; those in the sedimentary POM (<62 μm grain size) also revealed this trend, but to a lesser extent. Oysters of two known ages, 6 months old (“old oysters”) and newly settled individuals (“young oysters”), were transplanted from one station to each of the remaining stations, while some were left at the original station. Values of δ13C in the muscle of transplanted oysters changed in parallel with the sea–river gradient of δ13C in POM (decreasing from −16.0 to −18.5‰ in old oysters and from −16.8 to −21.9‰ in young ones). The spatial sea–river gradient of the oyster's δ13C is related not only to the distance between the site that the oyster inhabits and sea or riverine environment, but also to the tidal flow pattern that surrounds its feeding place. Although the δ13C value of the sedimentary POM was correlated with that of the water-column POM, the δ13C value of the oyster tissue was significantly correlated with that of the water-column POM, but not with that of the sedimentary POM. This suggests that the oyster feeds primarily on water-column rather than sedimentary POM. Received: 30 April 1999 / Accepted: 15 December 1999  相似文献

Gorgonians are passive suspension feeders, contributing significantly to the energy flow of littoral ecosystems. More than in active suspension feeders (such as bivalves, ascidians and sponges) their prey capture is affected by spatial and temporal prey distribution and water movement. Corallium rubrum is a characteristic gorgonian of Mediterranean sublittoral hard bottom communities. This study found a high variability in the annual cycle of prey capture rate, prey size and ingested biomass, compared to other Mediterranean gorgonians. Detrital particulate organic matter (POM) was found throughout the year in the polyp guts and constituted the main proportion of the diet (25–44%). Crustacean fragments and copepods (14–46%) accounted for the second major proportion, while invertebrate eggs (9–15%) and phytoplankton (8–11%) constituted the smallest part of the diet. To verify the importance of detrital POM in the energy input of this precious octocoral species, in situ experiments were carried out during the winter–spring period. The results confirm the importance of detrital POM as the main source of food for C. rubrum [0.13±0.04 μg C polyp−1 h−1 (mean±SD)]. This study also compares the prey capture rates of two colony size classes and two depth strata: Within the same patch, small colonies (<6 cm height) captured significantly more prey per polyp (0.038±0.09 prey polyp−1 h−1) than larger colonies (>10 cm high) (0.026±0.097 prey polyp−1 h−1) and showed a higher proportion of polyps containing prey (17% compared to 10%). Comparing colonies of similar size (<6 cm height) revealed that the colonies situated at 40 m depth captured significantly more prey (0.038±0.09 prey polyp−1 h−1) than the ones at 20 m (0.025±0.11 prey polyp−1 h−1). One pulse of copepods was recorded that constituted 16% of all captured prey during the 15-month period studied in one of the sampled populations. The data suggest that the variability of hydrodynamic processes may have a higher influence on the feeding rate than seasonal changes in the seston composition. The carbon ingestion combined with data on the density of the exploited population results in 0.4–9.6 mg C m−2 day−1. The grazing impact of current, heavily exploited and small-sized populations is comparable to that of larger Mediterranean gorgonians, suggesting that unexploited red coral populations may have a high impact compared with other passive suspension feeders.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal population genetic structures of the common sole, Solea solea, were studied in Northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea populations, using three polymorphic exon-primed intron-crossing (EPIC) markers. Results demonstrated significant multilocus differentiation among Eastern Mediterranean and a group composed by Western Mediterranean and Atlantic populations (θ = 0.150, P < 0.001), but also suggested unrecorded genetic differentiation of the Adriatic Sea population. No pattern of isolation-by-distance was recorded across the range covered by sampling, from the Kattegat to the Aegean Sea. Conversely to genetically structured Mediterranean populations, Atlantic populations ranging from Denmark to Portugal could be considered as representative of the same panmictic unit (θ = 0.009, not significant). Results further demonstrated stability of multilocus genetic structure among temporarily replicated cohort samples [0+, 1+, subadults] from several coastal and estuarine locations from Bay of Biscay, excepted for the amylase locus Am2B3-2 at one location (Pertuis d’Antioche). Despite coherence of such observed patterns of multilocus differentiation with previous allozymic surveys in sole, and with patterns generally obtained for other marine fish species, single-locus results from EPICs indicated divergent coalescence schemes supporting a complex response to ecology and history of sole’s populations. Results stress the use of nuclear genes such as EPIC markers to investigate population structure, but also historical, demographic, and possibly selective processes in marine fishes.  相似文献

The osmoregulatory abilities of one freshwater and two brackish water (Baltic Sea) populations of the euryhaline teleost fish Gasterosteus aculeatus were studied with respect to evolutionary physiology. Plasma osmolality, activities of Na+K+-ATPase, citrate synthase, creatine kinase in the gill and free amino acids in liver, axial muscle and pectoral fin muscle were measured. After transfer from 10 to 35 ppt at 15 °C, time-course changes of plasma osmolality and gill Na+K+-ATPase showed no significant fundamental differences between the freshwater and one of the Baltic Sea populations. In a multi-factorial experiment, each population was exposed to four different abiotic regimes. Both brackish water populations had high mortality in freshwater at 4 °C, which is discussed as a failure of osmotic regulation (reduced taurine concentrations). Freshwater specimens had higher levels of glycine in the axial and pectoral fin muscles compared to the brackish water populations. This is interpreted as a genetically based effect. In brackish (20 ppt) water of 15 °C, the freshwater population had high activities of Na+K+-ATPase, but low activities of creatine kinase, whereas both brackish water populations behaved in the opposite way. A fundamental difference between the freshwater and brackish water populations on the level of the osmoregulatory machinery was not observed. The sources of carbon and the dietary habits of Brachidontes pharaonis (Mollusca, Bivalvia), a new Lessepsian entry in the western Mediterranean, living in a cooling vat of a saltworks system in western Sicily (MED), were assessed by estimating throughout a season the relative abundance of a stable carbon isotope (13C) in particulate organic matter (POM), sedimentary organic matter (SOM), primary organic matter sources (seagrasses, sand microflora, macroalgae), Brachidontes pharaonis and its biodeposition material. In the saltworks the most enriched primary food source potentially fuelling the saltworks food web was Cymodocea nodosa (seasonal average –7.9±0.6), Laurencia papillosa and Cystoseira sp., which represented the predominant macroalgae (seasonal average –19.0±1.0) and sand microflora 13C (–14.7±0.11). POM annual mean 13C was –17.4±0.9, and that of SOM was –17.0±2.3. The seasonal mean isotopic value of B. pharaonis was –14.7±0.7; while its faeces was more depleted (–17.7±2.4), while the pseudofaeces (–14.6±3.6) was similar to somatic B. pharaonis in composition. Our study showed that Brachidontes assimilated mostly mixed sedimentary organic carbon re-arranged via a detritus route dominated mainly by macroalgae and sand microflora and that it was able to exploit almost all the predominant carbon sources available in its colonised environment both directly (sand microflora) and indirectly via the POM/SOM detritus route. These carbon sources incorporated most of the environmental variability relative to the isotopic composition of primary producers (about –11 throughout the year).Communicated by R.

Cod (Gadus morhua) were exposed to hypercapnia (water Pco2 = 7.5 mmHg), elevated copper level (0.4 ppm) or a combination of both in order to study extra- and intracellular acid-base regulation and the influence hereupon of copper. During pure hypercapnia, the extracellular respiratory acidosis was completely compensated within 12 to 24 h via a chloride-mediated increase in extracellular [HCO3 ]. Exposure to copper in normocapnic seawater caused a large and progressive increase in plasma [Na+] and [Cl] and a metabolic acidosis. Exposure to copper in hypercapnic seawater was associated with smaller elevations of plasma [Na+] and [Cl] than in normocapnic seawater, showing that hypercapnia had a protective effect on the copper-induced osmoregulatory disturbances. The compensation of the hypercapnic acidosis was, however, slow and incomplete in fish exposed to both copper and hypercapnia. Extracellular pH remained depressed by 0.3 pH units after 72 h. The data reveal that acid-base regulation was immediately and persistently inhibited by copper. The limited acid-base regulation during combined copper and hypercapnia exposure was chloride-mediated as during hypercapnia alone. Intracellular pH recovery was complete and very rapid in ventricular and skeletal muscle tissues during environmental hypercapnia, whereas acid-base compensation in liver tissue was slower, the kinetics being similar to that in the extracellular compartment. Intracellular pH compensation was significantly slowed down by copper. Copper concentration increased drastically in gill tissue already at 3 h, while copper concentrations in liver, muscle and plasma were significantly elevated only after 48 h, with liver showing the largest elevation. Mucus released by scleractinian corals can act as an important energy and nutrient carrier in coral reef ecosystems, and a distinct isotopic signature would allow following the fate of this material. This study investigates the natural C and N stable isotopic signatures of mucus released by four scleractinian coral genera (Acropora, Fungia, Pocillopora and Stylophora) in comparison with those of suspended particulate organic matter (POM) in seawater of a Northern Red Sea fringing coral reef near Aqaba, Jordan. The natural δ13C and δ15N signatures of coral mucus differed significantly from seawater POM for the majority of seasonal comparisons, but were inappropriate for explicit tracing of mucus in the coral reef food web. Thus, a labeling technique using stable isotope tracers (13C and 15N) was developed that produced δ13C values of up to 122 ± 5‰ (mean ± SE) and δ15N of up to 2,100 ± 151‰ in mucus exuded by Fungia corals. 13C and 15N-enriched compounds were rapidly (within 3 h) and light-dependently transferred from the endosymbiotic zooxanthellae to the mucus-producing coral host. The traceability of 15N-labeled mucus was examined by evaluating its uptake and potential utilization by epizoic acoelomorph Waminoa worms naturally occurring on a range of scleractinian coral taxa. This tracer experiment resulted in uptake of coral mucus by the coral-associated acoelomorphs and further demonstrated the possibility to trace stable isotope-labeled coral mucus by revealing a new trophic pathway in coral reef ecosystems.  相似文献

Osmoregulatory ability of mature chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) during spawning migration was examined by following the changes in gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity and in the distribution and morphology of chloride cells. Mature chum salmon caught in Otsuchi Bay, northern Honshu Island, Japan, died within 5 d in seawater (SW) in association with a marked increase in plasma osmolality, whereas the fish transferred to fresh water (FW) maintained plasma osmolality efficiently. Gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity decreased in both SW-maintained and FW-transferred fish. Well-developed chloride cells, identified by immunocytochemical staining specific for Na+, K+-ATPase, were present mainly in the filament epithelium of immature fish caught in the ocean. In mature fish caught in the bay, however, additional chloride cells were also found in the lamellar epithelium. The number of filament chloride cells decreased markedly in the mature fish both in SW and in FW, whereas the number of lamellar chloride cells was maintained. These results suggest that the loss of hypoosmoregulatory ability in mature chum salmon may be attributable to the decrease in filament chloride cells and associated decrease in gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity, and also that appearance of lamellar chloride cells may be preparatory to the forthcoming upstream migration. In estuaries, eelgrass meadows contribute to fundamental ecosystem functions of estuaries, providing food to several predators and buffering the negative effects of eutrophication. We asked whether the presence of the eelgrass Zostera noltii decreased the nitrogen concentration in the overlying water, affected the sources of nitrogen sequestrated by primary producers and changed the benthic and pelagic food web structures. We also studied the importance of these food webs in providing food to fish. We compared bare sediment to sediment covered by a Z. noltii meadow, and examined nutrient concentrations in the water column and δ15N in primary producers as indicators of anthropogenic inputs of nutrients. We then measured both δ13C and δ15N in the tissues of plants and consumers to establish food web structures. There were no differences in the concentrations and sources of nitrogen between sites. Rather, δ15N values indicated anthropogenic inputs of N (e.g. sewage discharges, agriculture) in both sites. There were no major differences in the structure of the planktonic food web, which was in part sustained by particulate organic matter and supported most predator fish, and in the structure of the benthic food web. Nonetheless, there were differences in the sources of food for omnivore consumers and for the detritivore Scrobicularia plana. Overall, the benthic food web did not use food derived from the eelgrass or macroalgae deposited on the substratum. Suspension feeders used particulate and sediment organic matter, whereas the δ13C and δ15N values of the other consumers indicated a likely contribution of benthic microalgae. Furthermore, in both habitats we found large variability in the isotope signatures of benthic macrofauna consumers, which did not allow distinguishing clearly different trophic groups and indicated a high level of omnivory and a mixed diet opportunistically making use of the availability of food in the surroundings.  相似文献

Anguilla japonica leptocephali are transported from their offshore spawning area to their recruitment areas in East Asia, but their depth distributions, food sources and feeding are still poorly known. This study analyzed carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of leptocephali of A. japonica, Ariosoma major and Ariosoma spp., and of particulate organic matter (POM), their likely food source, at five different depths in 2004–2009. We used mixing models to show that A. japonica appeared to be feeding at depths between 5 and 50 m, but sometimes deeper. A. major appeared to have a tendency of mostly feeding at depths of 50 m or shallower. Although the A. japonica and Ariosoma spp. collected in the same area during the leptocephalus stage appeared to have different feeding ecologies possibly related to different types of POM, their different depth distributions, sizes and transport histories may also help explain these differences.  相似文献

Diel swimming behaviors of juvenile anchovies (Anchoa spp.) were observed using stationary hydroacoustics and synoptic physicochemical and zooplankton profiles during four unique water quality scenarios in the Neuse River Estuary, NC, USA. Vertical distribution of fish was restricted to waters with DO greater than 2.5 mg O2 l−1, except when greater than 70% of the water column was hypoxic and a subset of fish were occupying water with 1 mg O2 l−1. We made the prediction that an individual fish would select a swim speed that would maximize net energy gain given the abundance and availability of prey in the normoxic waters. During the day, fish adopted swim speeds between 7 and 8.8 bl s−1 that were near the theoretical optimum speeds between 7.0 and 8.0 bl s−1. An exception was found during severe hypoxia, when fish were swimming at 60% above the optimum speed (observed speed = 10.6 bl s−1, expected = 6.4 bl s−1). The anchovy is a visual planktivore; therefore, we expected a diel activity pattern characteristic of a diurnal species, with quiescence at night to minimize energetic costs. Under stratified and hypoxic conditions with high fish density coupled with limited prey availability, anchovies sustained high swimming speeds at night. The sustained nighttime activity resulted in estimated daily energy expenditure over 20% greater than fish that adopted a diurnal activity pattern. We provide evidence that the sustained nighttime activity patterns are a result of foraging at night due to a lower ration achieved during the day. During severe hypoxic events, we also observed individual fish making brief forays into the hypoxic hypolimnion. These bottom waters generally contained higher prey (copepod) concentrations than the surface waters. The bay anchovy, a facultative particle forager, adopts a range of behaviors to compensate for the effects of increased conspecific density and reduced prey availability in the presence of stratification-induced hypoxia.  相似文献

Measurements of the defecation rate of Salpa thompsoni were made at several stations during two cruises west of the Antarctic Peninsula in 2004 and 2006. Rates were quantified in terms of number of pellets, pigment, carbon and nitrogen for a wide size range of both aggregate and solitary salps. Measured defecation rates were constant over several hours when salps were held at near-surface conditions from which they had been collected. The defecation rate per salp increased with both salp size and the ambient level of particulate organic matter (POM) in the upper water column. The weight-specific defecation rate ranged between 0.5 and 6% day−1 of salp body carbon, depending on the concentration of available particulate matter in the water. Carbon defecation rates were applied to biomass estimates of S. thompsoni to calculate daily carbon defecation rates for the populations sampled during the two cruises. Dense salp populations of over 400 mg C m−2 were calculated to produce about 20 mg C m−2 day−1, comparable to other major sources of vertical flux of organic material in the Southern Ocean. Measured sinking rates for salp fecal pellets indicated that the majority of this organic material could reach deep sediments within a few days, providing a fast and direct pathway for carbon to the deep ocean.  相似文献

Great scallop, Pecten maximus, and blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, clearance rate (CR) responses to low natural seston concentrations were investigated in the laboratory to study (1) short-term CR variations in individual bivalves exposed to a single low seston diet, and (2) seasonal variations in average CR responses of bivalve cohorts to natural environmental variations. On a short temporal scale, mean CR response of both species to 0.06 μg L−1 chlorophyll a (Chl a) and 0.23 mg L−1 suspended particulate matter (SPM) remained constant despite large intra-individual fluctuations in CR. In the seasonal study, cohorts of each species were exposed to four seston treatments consisting of ambient and diluted natural seston that ranged in mean concentration from 0.15 to 0.43 mg L−1 SPM, 0.01 to 0.88 μg L−1 Chl a, 36 to 131 μg L−1 particulate organic carbon and 0.019 to 0.330 mm3 L−1 particle volume. Although food abundance in all treatments was low, the nutritional quality of the seston was relatively high (e.g., mean particulate organic content ranged from 68 to 75%). Under these low seston conditions, a high percentage of P. maximus (81–98%) and M. edulis (67–97%) actively cleared particles at mean rates between 9 and 12 and between 4 and 6 L g−1 h−1, respectively. For both species, minimum mean CR values were obtained for animals exposed to the lowest seston concentrations. Within treatments, P. maximus showed a greater degree of seasonality in CR than M. edulis, which fed at a relatively constant rate despite seasonal changes in food and temperature. P. maximus showed a non-linear CR response to increasing Chl a levels, with rates increasing to a maximum at approximately 0.4 μg L−1 Chl a and then decreasing as food quantity continued to increase. Mean CR of M. edulis also peaked at a similar concentration, but remained high and stable as the food supply continued to increase and as temperatures varied between 4.6 and 19.6°C. The results show that P. maximus and M. edulis from a low seston environment, do not stop suspension-feeding at very low seston quantities; a result that contradicts previous conclusions on the suspension-feeding behavior of bivalve mollusks and which is pertinent to interpreting the biogeographic distribution of bivalve mollusks and site suitability for aquaculture.  相似文献

The food sources of benthic deposit feeders were investigated at three stations in an estuarine mudflat (Idoura Lagoon, Sendai Bay, Japan) during July and August 2005, using δ13C and δ15N ratios. Sediment at the stations was characterized by low chlorophyll (chl) a content (0–1 cm depth, <4 μg cm−2) and the dominance of riverine–terrestrial materials (RTM) in the sediment organic matter (SOM) pool. Surface-deposit feeders (Macoma contabulata, Macrophthalmus japonicus, and Cyathura muromiensis) exhibited much higher δ13C values (−18.4 to −12.4‰) than did the SOM pool (<−25‰). A δ13C-based isotopic mixing model estimated that benthic diatoms comprised 45–100% (on average) of their assimilated diet, whereas RTM comprised a lesser fraction (29% maximum). The major diet of the deep-deposit feeding polychaetes Notomastus sp. and Heteromastus sp. was benthic diatoms and/or marine particulate organic matter (POM), with little RTM assimilated (39% maximum). The consumers appeared to lack specific digestive enzymes and to use detritus-derived carbon only after its transfer to the microbial biomass. The isotopic mixing model also showed that the dietary contribution of RTM increased slightly (15% maximum) in the vicinity of freshwater input, suggesting that spatial changes in RTM supply affect the dietary composition of deposit feeders. These results clearly demonstrate that deposit feeders selectively ingest and/or assimilate the more nutritious microalgal fractions in the SOM pool. Such adaptations may allow enhanced energy gain in estuarine mudflats that are rich in vascular plant detritus with low nutritive value.  相似文献

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the importance of water flow for skeletal growth (rate) becomes higher with increasing irradiance levels (i.e. a synergistic effect) and that such effect is mediated by a water flow modulated effect on net photosynthesis. Four series of nine nubbins of G. fascicularis were grown at either high (600 μE m−2 s−1) or intermediate (300 μE m−2 s−1) irradiance in combination with either high (15–25 cm s−1) or low (5–10 cm s−1) flow. Growth was measured as buoyant weight and surface area. Photosynthetic rates were measured at each coral’s specific experimental irradiance and flow speed. Additionally, the instantaneous effect of water flow on net photosynthetic rate was determined in short-term incubations in a respirometric flowcell. A significant interaction was found between irradiance and water flow for the increase in buoyant weight, the increase in surface area, and specific skeletal growth rate, indicating that flow velocity becomes more important for coral growth with increasing irradiance levels. Enhancement of coral growth with increasing water flow can be explained by increased net photosynthetic rates. Additionally, the need for costly photo-protective mechanisms at low flow regimes could explain the differences in growth with flow.  相似文献

The properties of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase from gill tissue of the tanner crab Chionocetes bairdi, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and glyceraldehyde dehydrogenase from skeletal muscle of C. bairdi and the yellowfin sole Limanda aspera were examined over the physiological temperature range of the animals. Both animals were obtained in the Bering Sea in winter, and their enzymes appear to be remarkably cold-adapted. Affinity of sole LDH for substrate appears to increase with decreasing temperature, thus keeping reaction rate essentially independent of temperature at physiological concentrations of the substrate. Calculated values of activation energy are low, in keeping with the argument that organisms from cold environments have enzymes with a reduced energy of activation. In addition, Hill plots of the substrate saturation curves for lactate dehydrogenase from muscle of sole indicate that there is a facilitation of allosteric behaviour at low temperatures. Maximum affinity of sole LDH for substrate in the absence of univalent cations occurs at 3°C, while in the presence of 150 mN K+, it occurs between 0° to-2°C. The effects of Mg2+ on enzyme activity appear to be determined by concentration of substrate and temperature. Thus, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase are stimulated more effectively by Mg2+ at low temperature and at low substrate levels whereas, at high concentrations of substrate, they are relatively independent of the bivalent cation. All four dehydrogenases are affected by the univalent cations Na+, K+ and NH4 + in a manner which appears to be determined, in part at least, by concentration of substrate and by temperature. These findings suggest mechanisms for the maintenance and regulation of enzyme activity in poikilothermic tissues at low and changing temperatures.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of Merluccius hubbsi was investigated in 2 regions of SE Brazil. The major food sources for the hakes were fish, crustaceans, and squid. In the upwelling system of Cabo Frio, the diet was very similar in the summers of 2001/2002 and spring 2002; fish were the most important prey followed by crustaceans. In Ubatuba, euphausiids were an important prey during the winter 2001 (100 m), while in the summer 2002, fish and amphipods predominated in the diet in the shallower site (40 m) and squid in the deeper site (100 m). The hakes showed temporal differences in stable isotope signatures in both regions, while C:N ratios varied only in Cabo Frio. δ15N and δ13C (bulk and corrected for lipid content) increased with fish length, which seems to be related to the increasing importance of fish and decreasing importance of euphausiids and amphipods in the diet of larger hakes. The mean trophic level of 3.7 for M. hubbsi was estimated using δ15N of bivalves as baseline and the fractionation of 3.4‰ between trophic levels.  相似文献
