This paper examines how education for sustainable development (ESD) can be concretely advanced using the theoretical approaches
of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) and sustainable livelihoods (SL). Five case examples illustrate a diverse
set of strategic educational interventions focusing on: (1) education of specific organizational actors about these theoretical
frameworks illustrated with case examples (such as SCP training by the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies
[UNU-IAS] and CSR-Asia of government and business representatives), (2) regional education strategies focused on production
and consumption in specific sectors (such as the food sector in Sk?ne, Sweden), (3) social learning directed at innovation
for sustainable development (such as competitions of solar boats developed by universities in the region of Friesland, the
Netherlands), (4) education of consumers and firms made possible by the adoption of certification systems affirming SCP and
SL (such as Cradle-to-Cradle certification of a paper company in the Netherlands or the establishment of Fair Trade cities
in Sweden), or (5) reorienting communities to address underutilized productive physical capital within communities (such as
the sharing productive capital project in rural areas of Saskatchewan, Canada). The cases are drawn from the projects that
the UNU-IAS, four of its regional centers of expertise (RCE) on ESD and other affiliates have conducted. In addition to documenting
the educational processes emerging from specific regions, the paper highlights findings related to the success of these projects
and opportunities for further research, including regional and inter-regional approaches.

The discovery and use of fossil fuels have not only helped the evolution of human society from agricultural civilization to industrial civilization, but also caused serious environmental and climate problems. The earth is calling for a sustainable future, and a change from industrial civilization to ecological civilization based on the new"energy revolution".A macroscopic quantitative analysis of China’s environmental capacity and climate capacity shows that China is in urgent need of changing the extensive developing mode and having an energy revolution. It is foreseeable that fossil fuels will remain the most consumed source of energies in China now and in the next few decades.Although the efficient and clean use of fossil fuels are very important, this is not an energy revolution or the fundamental solution to environmental and climate problems.Unconventional gases including shale gas play an important role in the mitigation of environmental problems and climate change, but"shale gas revolution"or"shale gas era"is not suitable to China since the proportion of natural gas in primary energy structure in China can only be increased by a maximum of 20%.The transition of Chinese energy structure from fossil-fuels-dominating stage to multiple-energy-sources stage and then to a nonfossil-fuels-dominating stage is the inevitable future, with the help of great contribution from renewable energy and nuclear energy.Among renewable energies, the proportion of non-hydro renewable energies will gradually increase.Improvement of their market competitiveness(economic efficiency)relies on technological innovation.Renewable energies will be the main energy source for the earth in future.Despite the impact of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the whole world, including China, will not give up nuclear energy development.Safe, steady, and large-scale development of nuclear power is a rational choice of China.Transition from nuclear fission power plant to nuclear fusion power plant is the inevitable future.Nuclear energy will be a sustainable energy source and another main energy source of the earth in future.China needs to enhance energy security consciousness, promote energy saving, and change the energy supply-demand patterns, that is the transition from"meet a too-fast-growing demand with an extensive supply"to"meet a reasonable demand with a rational supply".All countries need to work together to address global environmental problems and climate change.Energy revolution is the foundation for a sustainable future. With a wide range of international cooperation, the win-win cooperation is the only way of overcoming these challenges.

A huge tension exists between recognizing sustainable development (SD) as a meta-discourse and accepting a limitless interpretational width. We analyse the impacts of diversity of worldviews on the interpretation of SD—as a knowledge-based concept—through a critical literature review, resulting in recommendations on the topic. We apply a social-constructionist approach, appreciating the complex socio-ecological interactions at the heart of SD. Only recently worldviews are recognized as constitutive elements of SD. Little attention has been given to the impacts on generated knowledge for SD. Variety of worldviews induces a variety of knowledge claims and needs. To retain SD’s ‘universal’ appeal as practical decision-guiding strategy for policy and action, we propose an integrative approach towards knowledge for SD—entailing an explicit pluralization of knowledge. SD should be re-interpreted as a joint worldviews construct, embracing a diversity of views in collaborative research and co-production of knowledge. Interpreting SD as a joint endeavour is necessary to overcome historical obstacles like cultural hegemony and a hierarchy of knowledge systems. We identified the following requirements for an inclusive knowledge for SD paradigm: re-interpretation of SD as a worldview constructs in progress; interpretative flexibility; co-production of knowledge; subjectivity awareness and self-reflexivity; respect for a diversity of worldviews/knowledges; identifying shared goals; collaborative research; a systems approach; transdisciplinarity; and recognition of contextuality. Further research—concerning potential methodologies and typologies—to reconcile variety of worldviews and knowledge systems in a joint SD worldviews construct is urgently needed.

Sustainability has been regarded as an important concept for survival in the contemporary scenario. Modern design engineers are in need of approaches for creating sustainable products. In this context, this paper reports a case study carried out in an Indian modular switches manufacturing organisation. The existing handle of the switch has been modelled using computer-aided design (CAD). Then, the sustainability analysis has been carried out for determining the environmental impact. This is followed by the redesign of the handle using design for manufacturability (DFM) principles. The sustainability has been measured in terms of carbon footprint, energy consumption and air–water impacts. It has been found that the redesigned handle possesses minimal environmental impact. It could be inferred from the results of the case study that CAD and DFM could lead to the development of sustainable product design with minimal impact on the environment.

The open collaborative philosophy employed in the success of open source (OS) software can be applied to hardware design. Specifically, the development of OS appropriate technologies (OSAT) can improve sustainable development efforts worldwide. Yet, widespread OSAT use is far from ubiquitous. Given that lack of communication, access to information and poor collaboration are among the largest barriers to a more effective OSAT dissemination, this paper explores opportunities to overcome such obstacles using four techniques: (1) collaborative online platforms, (2) crowd-sourcing, (3) the concept of knowledge commons, and (4) enabled educational institutions through service learning and applied research. The results are analyzed, and conclusions are drawn that outline paths to higher multiuser collaboration for OSAT deployment.

This paper analyzes the Cuban model of sustainable development and explains the causes that made Cuba the only country that meets the conditions of sustainability according to the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). The Human Development Index has three main components: quality of life (health indicator measured as life expectancy at birth), knowledge (education indicator measured as adult literacy) and the standard of life (economic indicator measured by the Gross Domestic Income). This paper analyses the aspects of the educational and health system of Cuba and also of its energy policies that explain the excellent scores of the Human Development Index. Cuba shows a Human Development Index of 0.8 with an Ecological Footprint of 1.8?gha. This is achieved with a Gross Domestic Income lower than other countries with similar Human Development Index. The Ecological Footprint of Cuba is mainly determined by the CO2 and the agricultural land footprint. The paper shows how the economic transition, after the economic crisis of the early 1990s, was realized without significantly increasing the Ecological Footprint.

User behaviour is a significant determinant of a product's environmental impact; while engineering advances permit increased efficiency of product operation, the user's decisions and habits ultimately have a major effect on the energy or other resources used by the product. There is thus a need to change users' behaviour. A range of design techniques developed in diverse contexts suggest opportunities for engineers, designers and other stakeholders working in the field of sustainable innovation to affect users' behaviour at the point of interaction with the product or system, in effect ‘making the user more efficient’. Approaches to changing users' behaviour from a number of fields are reviewed and discussed, including: strategic design of affordances and behaviour‐shaping constraints to control or affect energy‐ or other resource‐using interactions; the use of different kinds of feedback and persuasive technology techniques to encourage or guide users to reduce their environmental impact; and context‐based systems which use feedback to adjust their behaviour to run at optimum efficiency and reduce the opportunity for user‐affected inefficiency. Example implementations in the sustainable engineering and ecodesign field are suggested and discussed.

To advance the area of design for sustainable behaviour (DfSB), a common behaviour terminology is needed to enable comparisons of studies across application areas. Thus, the map of pathways of sustainable behaviour was created with the aim of charting different paths that users can follow to reduce environmental impact when interacting with artefacts. The construction of the map results from a comparative analysis of sustainable behaviours identified in previous studies in conjunction with a review of existing behaviour classifications. The proposed map of pathways gives a comprehensive overview of all artefact-related resource-consuming usage behaviours, organised according to a design perspective and divided with regard to aspects of use and obtainment, primary and secondary artefact, duration and type of effort. Through design, the user can be encouraged to take any of the five identified paths: choice of artefact, changed use, maintenance and repair, mediated use and regulated artefact. Using the map in a DfSB process can guide the exploration phase and highlight potential design opportunities when choosing target behaviour. If adopted by the DfSB community, the united typology of the map also provides means necessary to make rigorous comparisons and develop the field and its tools.

The adsorptive potential of activated carbon prepared by chemical activation of Cocoa pod husk (CPHAA) to remove Congo red (CR) dye from its aqueous solution was investigated in this study. CPHAA was characterised using Energy Dispersive X-Ray, Scanning Electron Micrograph and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy techniques. The effects of contact time, initial dye concentration, pH and solution temperature were studied. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models. The equilibrium data were best represented by Langmuir isotherm model, with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 43.67 mg/g. The kinetic data were fitted to Pseudo-first-order, Pseudo-second-order, Elovich and Intraparticle diffusion models; the pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided the best correlation. Thermodynamic parameters such as standard enthalpy (ΔHo), standard entropy (ΔSo) and standard free energy (ΔGo) were evaluated. The thermodynamic study showed that the process is endothermic, spontaneous and feasible. The mean free energy of adsorption shows that the mechanism is by physisorption. CPHAA was found to be an effective adsorbent for the removal of CR dye from aqueous solution.

In the last two centuries, developed nations have had an unprecedented generation of wealth showing a strong economic progress. Unfortunately, such economic development has not been witnessed in all countries and it does not represent the holistic face of the social progress. The main reason stands in the ideological limitations of capitalism itself, often ignoring local communities and environment while focusing exclusively on profit maximization, market share, dividends and bonuses. This failure it is also because of the division between two basic entities: nonprofit and for profit sectors. The segregation created between the economic values and social values, has created a system where the two different entities have failed to capture and integrate the multi-dimensional nature of the human being to satisfy social needs. Because of this increasing tension, the society needs to find a common ground solution, where the social and economic benefits of these two entities are merged together to generate an anti-fragile system. This research is an attempt to determine if the social business (SB) is capable to solve the problems arose from the free market idealogy, nonprofit philosophy, and the consequent social and economic inefficiency. Thus, the boundaries between the private, public and nonprofit sectors need to be changed. In addition, it is aimed to show that SB can solve social, economic, and environmental problems by using the entrepreneurial engine and the profit instrument, proving at the end to be by default a sustainable business model that respects the triple bottom line approach. The investigation method is based on literature review and theory development from three different fields: economics, development studies, and nonprofit management.

This paper explores issues that are central to ecological economics. In spite of a substantial body of research and other
literature that has appeared in recent decades on transition, and countless other efforts, no progress has been made to halt
the increase in global warming, global emissions, rampant population growth, or several hundred other critical planet sustainability
indicators including global species extinction. The opposite is true. Consumption has escalated and it is poised to double
and, with it, planetary decay has followed closely. The aim of this work is to introduce a pragmatic solution and the economics
mechanisms solidly rooted in science, in the laws of conservation of mass and energy, and in environmental and ecological
sustainability that are necessary to overcome the tremendous forces of social, political, and economic resistance to major
change. To advance towards a sustainable civilization, adopting a holistic approach with those underlying principles in all
aspects of human activity, among others economy, finance, industry, commerce, engineering, politics, architecture, and education,
is both lacking and fundamentally required. A short review of the state-of-the-art of the science on the critical status of
the planet’s resources and its life-supporting systems is presented, as well as a brief catalog of the seminal works of the
science that gave rise to its metrics and established early on the groundwork for the understanding of the degree of sustainability
of the planet. We present the argument why past and current schemes of human economics, organization, culture, and politics
cannot achieve anything else, but complete and utter failure under their own underlying precepts. A rigorous and disciplined
process on how to overcome and avoid the precipitous decline and collapse of the environmental and planetary biosystems on
which all life depends, including human life, and a new view towards the world and the universe we all have no choice but
to live in, are also offered.

Sustainable development (SD) is generally recognised as having three dimensions, ecological, economic and social. Yet, its
implementation is burdened with resistance and conflict rooted in the short-term ‘business as usual’ development model, opposed
to the long-term sustainable benefit of local communities. Hence, the development of strategies to implement SD projects may
require further differentiation of these dimensions in relation to the contextual situation in which the project resides.
In two studies of SD projects on the Croatian islands, we identify five interlocking spheres of importance, Spiritual, Political,
Economic, Educational and Health, in addition to Ecological. Each of these spheres is accessible through gate-keepers, individuals
or a group of people who have the authority over the sector and as such, significantly influence public opinion. We suggest
that in this particular island context the sustainability of these projects may lie with those gate-keepers. Hence, initiating
and maintaining SD projects in these contexts requires a structured and targeted lobbying of these gate-keepers.
