Zooplankton biomass in the ice-covered Weddell Sea,Antarctica   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Zooplankton was sampled by a Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT 1 + 8) in Weddell Sea surface waters (0 to 300 m) between 66 and 78°S during austral summer (February – March 1983). Sixty-nine taxa including different developmental stages were considered and divided into 16 size classes between <1 and >39.5 mm length. Biomass was determined by taxon and size class for three different meso- and macroplankton communities in the oceanic region, on the northeastern shelf and on the southern shelf of the Weddell Sea. The highest biomass of 11.2 mg DW m–3 (3.4 g DW m–2) was found in the northeastern shelf community (70 to 74°S), where juvenile and adultEuphausia crystallorophias accounted for 3.7 mg DW m–3 (1.1 g DW m–2). Although not quantitatively sampled, early copepodite stages (CI to CIII) ofCalanoides acutus andCalanus propinquus ranked second with 2.7 mg DW m–3 (0.8 g DW m–2). Biomass in the northeastern shelf community was concentrated in the size ranges 1 to 4 mm and 19.5 to 39.5 mm. The oceanic community of the central Weddell Sea was dominated by copepods smaller than 5 mm, which made up half of the total oceanic biomass. The tunicateSalpa thompsoni (7.0 to 8.5 mm) was the dominant single species with 1.6 mg DW m–3 (0.5 g DW m–2). Euphausiids, mainly juvenile and adult krillEuphausia superba, comprised 1.2 mg DW m–3 (0.4 g DW m–2). Total standing stock in the oceanic community was 9.4 mg DWm–3 (2.8 g DW m–2). Lowest biomass values were found in the southern shelf community (south of 75°S) with 4.0 mg DW m–3 (1.2 g DW m–2), concentrated in the 1 to 4 mm and 14.5 to 34.5 mm size classes. Abundant species were the pteropodLimacina helicina (1 to 2 mm; 0.7 mg DW m–3; 0.2 g DW m–2) andE. crystallorophias (24.5 to 39.5 mm; 0.9 mg DW m–3; 0.3 g DW m–2). The data reveal that it is essential to distinguish among subsystems in the Southern Ocean. This leads to a better understanding of the structure and function of those pelagic food webs which represent alternatives to the paradigmatic krill-centered system.  相似文献

We conducted grazing experiments with the three marine cladoceran genera Penilia, Podon and Evadne, with Penilia avirostris feeding on plankton communities from Blanes Bay (NW Mediterranean, Spain), covering a wide range of food concentrations (0.02–8.8 mm3 l–1, plankton assemblages grown in mesocosms at different nutrient levels), and with Podon intermedius and Evadne nordmanni feeding on the plankton community found in summer in Hopavågen Fjord (NE Atlantic, Norway, 0.4 mm3 l–1). P. avirostris and P. intermedius showed bell-shaped grazing spectra. Both species reached highest grazing coefficients at similar food sizes, i.e. when the food organisms ranged between 15 and 70 µm and between 7.5 and 70 µm at their longest linear extensions, respectively. E. nordmanni preferred organisms of around 125 µm, but also showed high grazing coefficients for particles of around 10 µm, while grazing coefficients for intermediate food sizes were low. Lower size limits were >2.5 µm, for all cladocerans. P. avirostris showed upper food size limits of 100 µm length (longest linear extension) and of 37.5 µm particle width. Upper size limits for P. intermedius were 135 µm long and 60 µm wide; those for E. nordmanni were 210 µm long and 60 µm wide. Effective food concentration (EFC) followed a domed curve with increasing nutrient enrichment for P. avirostris; maximum values were at intermediate enrichment levels. The EFC was significantly higher for P. intermedius than for E. nordmanni. With increasing food concentrations, the clearance rates of P. avirostris showed a curvilinear response, with a narrow modal range; ingestion rates indicated a rectilinear functional response. Mean clearance rates of P. avirostris, P. intermedius and E. nordmanni were 25.5, 18.0 and 19.3 ml ind.–1 day–1, respectively. The reproductive parameters of three species of barnacles common in warm-water regions,Balanus amphitrite Darwin,B. eburneus Gould andB. trigonus Darwin, cultured singly or in pairs for 2 1/2 yr, were compared. All specimens, collected from Tokyo Bay and studied between 1985 and 1987, were fed on newly hatchedArtemia sp. larvae (Tetra strain) and phytoplankton culture and were maintained under constant temperature (20°C) and controlled photoperiods (10 h light:14 h dark). The breeding frequencies of these three species were equally high, from 2 to 4 broods mo–1 in the first year; they were relatively high between October and February, averaging 3 broods mo–1.B. amphitrite, B. eburneus andB. trigonus produced 24, 21 and 11 broods yr–1, respectively. Brood size was quite variable among the three species examined, yielding 4000 embryos brood–1 inB. amphitrite andB. eburneus and 6000 inB. trigonus. Brood interval averaged 4 to 9 d. The moult occurred over short intervals of 4 to 10 d moult–1. Both breeding and moulting frequencies were influenced by low temperature and starvation. Self-fertilization was observed in all species and was more frequent inB. amphitrite than inB. eburneus andB. trigonus. Nutritional condition and temperature seemed to be the main external factors regulating both breeding and moulting processes in barnacles.  相似文献

Weekly samples were collected near Kingston, Jamaica in 27 m vertical hauls, using 200 and 64µm mesh plankton nets, from July 1985 to January 1987. Thirtytwo copepod species were identified; nauplii and all copepodite stages were enumerated. Total copepod abundance ranged from 2.56 to 87.3 × 104 m–2. The annual abundance cycle was bimodal with peaks in October–November and May–June corresponding to the rainy seasons. Mean annual copepodite biomass was 0.15 g AFDW m–2 ranging from 0.03 to 0.41 g AFDW m–2. Mean generation time (from egg to adult) at 28°C was 19.5 d for the common speciesCentropages velificatus, Paracalanus aculeatus, andTemora turbinata. Isochronal development was demonstrated for copepodites ofP. aculeatus andT. turbinata, but not forC. velificatus. Mean daily specific growth rates (G) were 0.63, 0.63, and 0.48 d–1 forC. velificatus, P. aculeatus, andT. turbinata, respectively. In general, daily specific growth rates decreased in the later copepodite stages. Thus, it is postulated that growth of later stages and egg production may be food limited. Annual copepodite production was estimated as 419 kJ m–2 yr–1, while annual exuvial production and naupliar production were 35 and 50 kJ m–2 yr–1, respectively. Egg production was estimated as 44% (184 kJ m–2 yr–1) of the total copepodite production. Thus, mean total annual copepod production was 688 kJ m–2 yr–1. Rates of organic uptakes of three live diatoms (Nitzschia acicularis, Nitzschia sp. andNavicula incerta), and of three corresponding filtrates by the deposit-feeding polychaeteEupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu) were measured under similar experimental conditions. Worms used during this study were collected by SCUBA diving at Port-Vendres in shallow water (7 m deep) during the summer of 1986. Uptake rates of live diatoms were affected both by length of the experiments and by the nature of the food offered. The highest rate of uptake (11.8 10–4 mg algal ash-free dry wt mg–1 worm dry wt h–1) was recorded during a short-term experiment (4 h) with the smallest diatom (Nitzschia sp.). The lowest rate (1.1 10–4 mg algal ash-free dry wt mg–1 worm dry wt h–1) was recorded during a long-term experiment (48 h) with the largest diatom (Nitzschia acicularis). Filtrates ofN. acicularis were more readily utilized than those ofNitzschia sp. andNavicula incerta. Because of differences in uptake rates of algal filtrates as a function of species, it is not possible to evaluate the bias due to interaction with dissolved substances in experimental studies assessing ingestion of live benthic diatoms byE. nebulosa.  相似文献

Morpho-functional features potentially involved in defence mechanisms against fish predators (i.e. attachment tenacity, spine length, and test robustness and thickness) have been assessed in two Mediterranean sea urchins, Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula. All four morpho-functional features were significantly and positively related to individual size for both species of sea urchins. Test robustness (i.e. static load needed to break sea urchin tests) was significantly greater for A. lixula (from 3,450 to 15,000 g depending on size) than for P. lividus (1,180–11,180 g). Attachment tenacity (i.e. force needed to dislodge sea urchins from the rocky substrate) was greater in A. lixula (280–3,300 g) than in P. lividus (110–1,450 g), and the difference tended to decrease in relation to smaller sea urchin size. Spine length was greater in A. lixula (1.5–2.9 cm) than in P. lividus (0.5–2.3 cm), but the difference decreased for larger sea urchin size. Test thickness was slightly greater (but not significantly) in A. lixula (0.35–1.10 mm) than in P. lividus (0.12–0.90 mm). These results provide evidence that morpho-functional features of sea urchins could be involved in affecting predation rates by fishes upon P. lividus and A. lixula, with potential implications for the population structure and distribution patterns of the two sea urchins in shallow rocky reefs.Communicated by R. Feeding responses of the tentaculate depositfeeding polychaeteEupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu) were studied by measuring rates of uptake of three different14C-labelled diatoms (unialgal cultures ofNavicula incerta Grunow,Nitzschia acicularis Wm Smith, andNitzschia sp.). Worms used during this study were collected in the harbor of Port-Vendre (Western Mediterranean) during August 1986 (immature worms) and December 1987 (mature worms). Uptake rates were affected both by the length of the experiments and by the nature of the food offered. The highest rate of uptake (2.98 10–4 mg ashfree dry wt of algae mg–1 dry wt of worms h–1) was obtained during short-term experiments (4 h) with the smallest diatom (Nitzschia sp.). The lowest rate of uptake (0.21 10–4 mg ash-free dry wt of algae mg–1 dry wt of worms h–1) was also obtained withNitzschia sp., but for a long-term (48 h) experiment. Protein, lipid, phosphorus, and organic carbon contents, as well as electron transport system (ETS) activity, lactatedehydrogenase activity, and gut evacuation rate, were measured in four interzonal species of Pacific copepods:Calanus australis, C. pacificus, Eucalanus inermis, andE. elongatus f.hyalinus, collected at the upwelling areas off Peru (8°S) and California (27°N), and in the middle of the North Pacific (30°N), from February to April 1987. The two Eucalanidae species —E. inermis andE. elongatus — have distinctive biochemical and elemental body composition and rates of main physiological processes. Relative protein, lipid, phosphorus, and organic carbon contents (µg mg–1 wet weight) in these species were, respectively, ca. 1/7 to 1/10, 1/5 to 1/20, 1/5 to 1/10, and 1/5 those inCalanus spp. Likewise, oxygen uptake rate per unit of wet weight (based on ETS activity) inE. inermis andE. elongatus was 5 to 10% of that in calanids; a similar difference was found in phosphorus excretion rate. In addition, gut evacuation rates inE. inermis andE. elongatus were ca. one-fifth of those inCalanus spp. Based on these data, we considered the eucalanids as belonging to a distinctive physiological group, figuratively named jelly-body copepods. In contrast with calanids, active lactatedehydrogenase has been found in the bodies ofE. inermis andE. elongatus, apparently allowing them to survive for a long time in layers of extremely low oxygen content (<0.2 ml l–1). The ultrastructure and pigment content of algal chloroplasts (derived from Bacillariophyceae or Chrysophyceae) are described from 3 benthic species of brackish-water foraminiferans.Elphidium williamsoni Haynes contains 4×106 chloroplasts mg-1, whereas the contents ofNonion germanicum (Ehrenberg) andE. excavatum (Terquem) are about 10% of this value. The two former contain chlorophyllsa andc and fucoxanthin, but these pigments were not detectable in the latter.E. williamsoni andN. germanicum had a net uptake of14C–HCO 3 - , proportional to their content of chlorophyll and number of chloroplasts, increasing linearly up to approximately 10 Klux. At light saturation the former assimilates 2.3x10-3 mg C mg-1 h-1 and the latter only about 20% of this value. Dark uptake was insignificant in all cases. Uptake could not be demonstrated inE. excavatum. The photosynthesis effected by these species is trivial in terms of the total benthic carbon fixation effected by the microflora. The chloroplasts survived longer in forminiferans kept in the dark than in light/dark adapted individuals. To keep a steady state population of chloroplasts under light/dark conditions,E. williamsoni must eat at least 65 chloroplasts individual-1 h-1, whereas the minimum consuption rate inN. germanicum is 20.  相似文献

The behavior and ecology of two mangrove crabs,Sesarma meinerti De Man, 1887 andCardisoma carnifex (Herbst, 1794) were investigated at the beginning of the rainy season (October–November 1988) at Mida Creek, Kenya. Both species occupy upper intertidal levels, above mean high-water neap, and completely overlap in their zonation. Each burrow lasts ca. 3 wk, with no significant difference between the species. Both are more active around dusk and dawn and also follow a similar trend in their foraging activity, but differ in that burrowing is mainly diurnal inC. carnifex and nocturnal inS. meinerti. A hierarchy of food preference, established by offeringC. carnifex andS. meinerti leaves of five mangrove species, proved similar for both, withBruguiera gymnorhiza ranking first andAvicennia marina last, but significant only forC. carnifex. A rough estimate of the amount of litter consumed by these two species and of the soil mixed up by their burrowing activity indicates that they play a role of primary importance in the ecology of East African mangroves.  相似文献

The nutritional history of corals is known to affect metabolic processes such as inorganic nutrient uptake and photosynthesis, but little is known about how it affects assimilation efficiency of ingested prey items or the partitioning of prey nitrogen between the host and symbiont. The temperate scleractinian coral Oculina arbuscula and its tropical congener Oculina diffusa were acclimated to three nutritional regimes (fed twice weekly, starved, starved with an inorganic nutrient supplement), then fed Artemia nauplii labeled with the stable isotope tracer 15N. Fed corals of both species had the lowest assimilation efficiencies (36–51% for O. arbuscula, 38–57% for O. diffusa), but were not statistically different from the other nutritional regimes. Fed and starved corals also had similar NH4+ excretion rates. This is inconsistent with decreased nitrogen excretion and reduced amino acid catabolism predicted by both the nitrogen recycling and conservation paradigms. In coral host tissue, ~90% of the ingested 15N was in the TCA-insoluble (protein and nucleic acids) and ethanol-soluble (amino acids/low molecular weight compounds) within 4 h of feeding. The TCA-insoluble pool was also the dominant repository of the label in zooxanthellae of both species (40–53% in O. arbuscula, 50–60% in O. diffusa). However, nutritional history had no effect on the distribution of prey 15N within the biochemical pools of the host or the zooxanthellae for either species. This result is consistent with the nitrogen conservation hypothesis, as preferential carbon metabolism would minimize the effects of starvation on nitrogen-containing biochemical pools.Communicated by P.W. The demersal fish fauna of Albatross Bay, in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Australia, was sampled on seven cruises from August 1986 to November 1988, using a random stratified trawl survey. Four depth zones between 7 and 45 m were sampled during both day and night. The mean biomass of fish from all seven cruises was 297 kg ha–1 for days trawls and 128 kg ha–1 for night trawls. The overall mean catch rates were 922 kg h–1 for day trawls and 412 kg h–1 for night trawls. There were marked differences between cruises in both the biomass and catch rate. Approx 890 000 fish of 237 species were collected. Of these, 25 species comprised 82% of the total biomass and 74% of the overall catch rate. The dominant families were Leiognathidae, Haemulidae and Clupeidae, with Sciaenidae and Dasyatidae important at night.Leiognathus bindus was the most abundant species. Twenty-five species occurred in more than 50% of trawls, withCaranx bucculentus the most frequently caught (96% of all trawls). Thirty four species were predators on prawns; their absolute mean biomass was 50 kg ha–1 during the day and 39 kg ha–1 at night. The corresponding catch rates were 171 and 125 kg h–1. Multiple-regression analyses were used to discriminate the effects of diel, seasonal, depth and cruise patterns. Of the 31 most abundant species, 15 showed diel patterns of abundance; 11 species showed seasonal patterns of abundance; 23 species had differential depth distribution; and 13 species showed significant cruise-to-cruise variation in abundance. Cruise variations in abundance were tested against salinity, temperature, tidal exchange, plankton biomass and prawn abundances as well as periods (and lags) of total rainfall prior to sampling. Only total rainfall showed any significant correlation. Total rainfall over a period of 6 wk immediately prior to sampling showed significant positive correlations with the abundances of five species, with overall daytime catch rates, and with the suite of 34 prawn predators. Rainfall and river runoff into Albatross Bay were significantly correlated. In Albatross Bay, the complex of factors affecting fish abundances and the magnitude of between-cruise differences indicate that such tropical communities may be unpredictable and are not seasonally constant. The high catch rates in Albatross Bay relative to similar tropical areas elsewhere are discussed and attributed to the light exploitation of the Albatross Bay stocks. Other than a prawn fishery, there is no commercial trawling in Albatross Bay. Hence, the only fishing mortality is a result of by-catch from prawn trawling. The annual total of such fish by-catch is probably less than 10% of the estimated standing stock of 93 000 tonnes.  相似文献

We quantified the nitrogen and enzyme hydrolyzable amino acid (EHAA) concentrations of sediments prior to and after corals sloughed, ingested, and egested sediments layered onto their surfaces, for the three coral species Siderastrea siderea, Agaricia agaricites, and Porites astreoides in Jamaica. The percent nitrogen of the sediments egested by all three species was lower than in the sediments available to the corals. Additionally, the sediments sloughed (not ingested) by A. agaricites and P. astreoides were lower in percent nitrogen, while the sediments sloughed by S. siderea had the same percent nitrogen as that of the available sediments. The percent nitrogen of the sediments sloughed and egested by P. astreoides showed significant negative and positive relationships, respectively, to increasing sediment loads, while the percent nitrogen of the sediments sloughed and egested by both S. siderea and A. agaricites showed no relationship to sediment load. EHAA concentrations were not significantly different between the sloughed and available sediments but were significantly lower in the sediments egested by S. siderea and A. agaricites (EHAA concentrations were not measured for P. astreodies sediment fractions). Comparisons of the nitrogen and EHAA concentrations in the sloughed and egested sediments to what was available prior to coral processing show that maximum ingestion was between 0.1 and 0.2 µg N µg–1 coral N cm–2 and between 0.5 and 0.6 µg EHAA·cm–2. Maximum assimilation efficiencies were estimated to be 30–60% of the available nitrogen. The data show that corals ingest and alter the nitrogen concentration of particles that land on their surfaces. Sprat (Sprattus sprattus) eggs and larvae were sampled from plankton and the Irish Sea in 1988 and 1989 and analysed forl-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) content, which is considered an index of the nutritional well being and thus indicative of the status of the population in relation to environmental (physical and biological) structures. In one month, the Vitamin C content of larvae in different developmental stages decreased from 800 to 300µg g–1 in the youngest larvae (4 to 14 mm) and to 250µg g–1 in the oldest larvae (14 to 28 mm). No significant differences in the Vitamin C content per unit weight were found between larvae collected at four sites located in western stratified waters, central stratified, central mixed and eastern mixed waters. The mean Vitamin C content per larva, as well as mean length and wet weight of larvae were lowest in central mixed and eastern mixed waters in May–June. The estimated increases in Vitamin C, length and weight of individuals in the population of larvae varied significantly from April to June and between western stratified and eastern mixed areas. Highest rates coincided with stratified water conditions and with suitable quantity and quality of food, which seemed to constitute the most favourable environmental conditions for abundance and growth of sprat larvae.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of deep-water gorgonian corals were investigated along 52 transects at 183–498 m depth in the Northeast Channel, between Georges Bank and Browns Bank in the northwest Atlantic, using a remotely operated vehicle and a towed video-camera system. Three species (Paragorgia arborea, Primnoa resedaeformis, and Acanthogorgia armata) were observed. Primnoa occurred on 35 transects below 196 m depth, with highest local abundance in stands of 104 colonies per 100 m2. Paragorgia was present on 21 transects deeper than 235 m, with highest local abundance of 49 colonies per 100 m2. Acanthogorgia was observed at only four transects between 231 m and 364 m, with a local maximum abundance of 199 colonies per 100 m2. The maximum abundance averaged for whole transects was 19.2 and 6.2 colonies per 100 m2 for Primnoa and Paragorgia, respectively. The corals were more common in the outer part of the channel along the shelf break and slope than on the shelf in the inner part. All three species showed a patchy distribution with no signs of competitive exclusion at any spatial scale. Transects with high abundance of corals were characterised by depths greater than 400 m, maximum temperatures less than 9.2°C, and a relatively high percentage coverage of cobble and boulder (more than 19% and 6%, respectively). High temperatures probably control the upper depth limit of the corals, and Primnoa seems to tolerate slightly higher temperatures than Paragorgia. Abundance of both species was negatively correlated with average temperature and positively with cobbles. Together, temperature, percentage cobble and salinity accounted for 38% of the variance of Primnoa. The comparable figure for Paragorgia was 15%. The observed distribution indicated that the abundance of coral is controlled by additional factors such as larger-scaled topographic features governing the current regimes and thus also the supply of food and larvae.Communicated by R. In April, July and August 1989 and February 1990, the delta region of the Fly River was surveyed to establish the aerial extent of mangrove forests, their species composition, tree densities and basal areas, and potential net primary production. Mangrove forests cover 87 400 ha, mainly on islands within the delta. Twentynine mangrove plant species were recorded, but there were only three major forest types in the delta.Rhizophora apiculata-Bruguiera parviflora forests (hereafterRhizophora-Bruguiera forests) predominated in regions where river water salinities were >10. These forests covered 31 500 ha and had mean total tree densities and basal areas of 2027 stems ha–1 and 21 m2 ha–1, respectively. Forests of the palmNypa fruticans (hereafterNypa forests) covered 38 400 ha, mainly in regions where river salinities were ~1 to 10, and had mean total densities and basal areas of 4431 stems ha–1 and 38 m2 ha–1, respectively. Forests dominated byAvicennia marina and/orSonneratia lanceolata (hereafterAvicennia-Sonneratia forests) predominated on accreting banks of sediment and covered 17 500 ha. In very low-salinity (< 1) regions there are large monospecific stands ofS. lanceolata. Mean total densities and basal areas forAvicennia-Sonneratia forests were 7036 stems ha–1 and 22 m2 ha–1, respectively. Mean net primary productivity (kg C ha–1 d–1) was estimated to be 26.7, 27.1 and 19.0 forRhizophora-Bruguiera, Nypa andAvicennia-Sonneratia forests, respectively. Total daily net primary production by all mangrove forests was estimated at 2214 t carbon. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope signatures have been determined for littoral fishes from three localities in the Balearic Islands (NW Mediterranean) for trophic assessment. Variation in the isotopic composition was examined at multiple levels: the individual organism, individual populations (ontogenetic variation) and at area effects (different islands). Cluster analyses based on 13C and 15N resulted in two very different dendrograms for the fish assemblages from Menorca and Formentera. In both schemes, congeners of the genera Diplodus and Labrus did not cluster together, suggesting that closely related species do not necessarily feed on similar foods. Significant differences in 15N were detected between locations for Scorpaena porcus, Scorpaena scrofa and Sciaena umbra, and significant differences in 13C were detected for Scorpaena porcus and Scorpaena scrofa. Overall there were significant spatial differences in the trophic position of littoral fishes among the three Balearic Islands, and fishes from Palma, Mallorca tended to feed at a higher trophic level than fishes from either Menorca and Formentera. Large-scale geographic comparisons, using earlier data from three sites in western Mallorca and in Corsica revealed that throughout the western Mediterranean generally, the average trophic level of fishes differs remarkably little. However, large discrepancies were observed in 15N for individual species, notably Scorpaena porcus, D. annularis, D. vulgaris and Serranus scriba. 13C composition of fishes did not seem to change greatly among the locations, although marked discrepancies were observed for D. puntazzo and Mullus surmuletus. Given the large-scale patterns we have observed, it is possible that the extent of multichannel omnivory which has been purported to exist in complex aquatic systems, may have been greatly overstated. Regression of 15N and 13C with fish body size revealed clear and significant trends for some species. In particular, 15N appeared to increase with body length in the macrocarnivorous fishes Scorpaena porcus, Scorpaena scrofa, Serranus scriba and Sciaena umbra. Trends were less apparent in animals which feed primarily on small benthic invertebrates, notably the four Diplodus species (D. vulgaris, D. sargus, D. annularis, D. puntazzo), and the labrids Labrus viridis and L. merula.Communicated by J.P. Regular daylight sampling over 13 mo (February 1985–February 1986) in and adjacent to intertidal forested areas, in small creeks and over accreting mudbanks in the mainstream of a small mangrove-lined estuary in tropical northeastern Queensland, Australia, yielded 112 481 fish from 128 species and 43 families. Species of the families Engraulidae, Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Clupeidae and Atherinidae were numerically dominant in the community. The same species, with the addition ofLates calcarifer (Latidae).Acanthopagrus berda (Sparidae) andLutjanus agentimaculatus (Lutjanidae) dominated total community biomass. During high-tide periods, intertidal forested areas were important habitats for juvenile and adult fish, with grand mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 3.5±2.4 fish m–3 and 10.9±4.5 g m–3, respectively. There was evidence of lower densities and less fish species using intertidal forests in the dry season (August, October), but high variances in catches masked any significant seasonality in mean fish biomass in this habitat. On ebb tides, most fish species (major families; Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Atherinidae, Melanotaeniidae) moved to small shallow creeks, where mean (±1 SE) low-tide density and biomass were 31.3±12.4 fish m–2 and 29.0±12.1 g m–2, respectively. Large variances in catch data masked any seasonality in densities and biomasses, but the mean number of species captured per netting in small creeks was lowest in the dry season (July, August). Species of Engraulidae and Clupeidae, which dominated high-tide catches in the forested areas during the wet season, appeared to move into the mainstream of the estuary on ebbing tides and were captured over accreting banks at low tide. Accreting banks supported a mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 0.4±0.1 fish m–2 and 1.7±0.3 g m–2, respectively, at low tide. There were marked seasonal shifts in fish community composition in the estuary, and catches in succeeding wet seasons were highly dissimilar. Comparison of fish species composition in this and three other mangrove estuaries in the region revealed significant geographic and temporal (seasonal) variation in fish-community structure. Modifications and removal of wetlands proposed for north Queensland may have a devastating effect on the valuable inshore fisheries of this region, because mangrove forests and creeks support high densities of fish, many of which are linked directly, or indirectly (via food chains) to existing commercial fisheries.Contribution No. 493 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

The removal of phosphate from ambient seawater by whole plants of five species of fucoid algae, collected from the east coast of N. Ireland in 1988 and 1989, was followed over 6-h periods. A transient uptake pattern was observed forPelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dcne. et Thuret,Fucus spiralis L.,F. vesiculosus L. andF. serratus L., consisting of an initial period of high uptake, followed by a phase of zero uptake and then a period at an intermediate rate.Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis had a constant slow rate of uptake over 6 h. The initial uptake rate ofF. spiralis was significantly greater than that of any other species. Phosphate uptake over a 2-h period was measured at concentrations ranging from that of ambient seawater to 25µg-at. l–1 for whole plants ofF. spiralis andF. serratus, using a large scale batch method. A small scale batch method was used for whole plants ofP. canaliculata and sections of the other four species investigated. Uptake abilities of the algae at low concentrations of phosphate were compared using the parameterV 1 (the uptake rate at 1µg-at. l–1) and at high concentrations usingV max, the maximum uptake rate. These kinetic parameters of uptake were calculated using a method that avoids bias and permits statistical evaluation of the results. The fucoid algae studied could be divided into two distinct groups on the basis of their abilities to take up phosphate from seawater.P. canaliculata andA. nodosum had low values ofV 1 in winter, which were also correlated with their positions on the shore and did not vary between winter and summer. TheFucus species had higher values ofV 1 in winter, which were also correlated with their positions on the shore. In summer, however,V 1-values for these species decreased and no longer correlated with their shore heights. TheV max-value forF. spiralis was higher in winter than in summer but was signifcantly greater than that of any other species at all times of year. The ecological significance ofV max is discussed in relation to nutrient limitation and the possible occurrence of patches of high nutrient concentration in the intertidal environment.  相似文献

The abundance and vertical distribution pattern of a halocyprid ostracod,Conchoecia pseudodiscophora, were investigated in the Japan Sea in 1985, 1987 and 1989. Vertical sampling from 500 m depth to the surface in the water around Yamato Rise revealed that this ostracod was second in dominance by number and third to fourth by biomass of the total zooplankton collected with a 0.35 mm mesh Norpac net. Horizontal net tows in Toyama Bay indicated that the major population ofC. pseudodiscophora was distributed below 250 to 300 m depth. No diel migration pattern was evident. Its contribution to total zooplankton there was 5 to 10% or more in terms of biomass. A total of five subadult instars (II to VI) and adult males and females were identified from instar analysis based on sizes and morphological characteristics of specimens collected with 0.10 mm mesh Norpac nets. Data on body length, wet weight and dry weight of each instar are presented. Carbon content of 35 to 48% of dry weight, and nitrogen content of 5.3 to 7.3% of dry weight, were recorded on fresh, freeze-dried specimens of selected instars (subadult Instars IV to VI, adult females). Water and ash contents of mixed specimens of these four instars were 76% of wet weight and 25% of dry weight, respectively. Feasibility of laboratory maintenance ofC. pseudodiscophora was tested, and it produced characteristic J shaped faecal pellets. Oxygen consumption rates of subadult instars V and VI, and adult female ranged 0.011 to 0.021µl O2 ind.–1 h–1 at 1 °C, or 2.9 to 6.1µl O2 (mg body N)–0.85 h–1 in terms of Adjusted Metabolic Rate (AMRo 2). There was no appreciable metabolic reduction inC. pseudodiscophora compared to other ostracods, despite their mesopelagic life mode. Subdominance in total zooplankton and nonreduced metabolic activity ofC. pseudodiscophora suggest that this species may be an important link in mesopelagic energy-flow and matter cycling in the Japan Sea.  相似文献
