The vertical distribution of the larvae of shelf-dwelling fish species that spawn in the NW Mediterranean Sea in spring was studied in relation to environmental data. Two sampling cycles were carried out at fixed stations on the continental shelf in May and June 1992. Three patterns of larval vertical distribution for the various taxa represented in the samples were observed. The larvae of most species (e.g. Boops boops, Diplodus sargus) were mainly located in the surface layer (10 m), others (e.g. Arnoglossus sp.) had broader distributions in the upper 40 m of the water column, and but a few (e.g. Gobiidae) were present in large concentrations at greater depths. The vertical distribution patterns of the various species showed no variations, despite high hydrographic variability during the study. The vertical distribution of only a few species (e.g. Arnoglossus sp., Crystallogobius linearis and Engraulis encrasicolus) varied over the diel cycle. The possible influence of the vertical distribution of fish larvae on their horizontal distribution patterns is discussed. Received: 10 March 1997 / Accepted: 4 April 1997  相似文献

Fishes were trawled from Albatross Bay, on the west coast of Cape York, north Queensland (12°45S; 141°30E) during 4 yr, from August 1986 to April 1989. Penaeids were the first or second most important prey item by dry weight in 14 of the 34 penaeid-eating fish species, and in 12 of the species by frequency of occurrence. Eighteen species of Penaeidae were identified in fish stomachs. The five commercially important species comprised over 70% by dry weight of all the penaeids eaten by all the fishes;Metapenaeus ensis, Penaeus semisulcatus andP. merguiensis comprised 22, 28 and 11%, respectively. Commercially unimportant penaeids comprised 85% by numbers of all penaeids eaten. Larger fishes ate larger penaeids, mainly commercially important species, while smaller fishes ate smaller penaeids, mainly commercially unimportant species. All penaeid-eating fishes also ate some teleost prey and many were primarily piscivorous. Most penaeid-eating fish species took more benthic prey than bentho-pelagic and pelagic prey combined. The fishes with the strongest predation impact on commercially important penaeids wereCaranx bucculentus and four species of elasmobranchs. The highest impact on commercially unimportant penaeids was made by several species of smaller but abundant fishes. An overall annual estimate of 2950 t yr–1 of commercially important penaeids is eaten by all fishes, a much higher figure than the average 870 t yr–1 taken by the fishery. This study highlights the need for accurate measurement of the abundance of penaeid predators as well as analyses of their diets when assessing the impact of predators on prawn stocks.  相似文献

We evaluated the importance of seagrass and algae to two species of tiger prawns (Penaeus semisulcatus and P. esculentus) by detailed sampling at four sites (two seagrass, two algae) in the Embley River estuary, and through sampling 26 sites in 7 adjacent estuaries at one time of year. Samples of tiger prawns were collected in the Embley River estuary with a small beam trawl at night every 2 wk from September to May for 2 yr (1990 to 1992). The two seagrass sites, which were 11 and 13 km from the river mouth, showed less seasonal variation in salinity than the two algal sites, which were 15 and 20 km from the river mouth. The algal beds at the two upstream sites almost disappeared during the wet season, but the biomass of seagrass did not change significantly between the wet and dry seasons. The grooved tiger prawn (P. semisulcatus), the main species at all sites, comprised 88% of the total tiger prawn catch over the two years. They were found at all sites during the pre-wet season, but after the onset of the wet season, they disappeared along with the algae, from the upstream sites. The brown tiger prawn (P. esculentus) was found almost exclusively (97% of the total catch) on the seagrass sites downstream. In the study of several estuaries, juvenile P. semisulcatus were caught at all 26 sites, and P. esculentus were caught in much smaller numbers, at 16 sites. Approximately equal numbers of P. semisulcatus were caught in seagrass and algal beds in the pre-wet season. Very few individuals >10 mm carapace length of either species, were caught. The results from this study highlight the importance of algal beds during the pre-wet season as nursery areas for one species of tiger prawn (P. semisulcatus).  相似文献

Sri Lanka provides an ideal opportunity for the study of the effect of geology on human health. The vast majority of the people of Sri Lanka still live in rural areas within areas termed geochemical provinces. Very broadly, one could say that a geochemical province has characteristic chemical composition in soil, water stream sediments and rocks, enabling their delineation from others. The chemical composition is presumed to be have an impact on the health of the inhabitants of the particular geochemical province, particularly because of the fact that their food and water are obtained mostly from the terrain itself. This leads to the concept of “diseases of geochemical origin”. Among these are dental fluorosis, iodine deficiency disorders (IDDs) and selenium-based diseases. The Dry Zone of Sri Lanka has several areas rich in groundwater fluoride, the ingestion of which leads to dental fluorosis. Iodine deficiency diseases are more common in the Wet Zone, though their aetiologies are more complicated. Interestingly, it has also been observed that significant proportions of the female population of Sri Lanka are selenium-deficient, which could well be related to the geological environment. Chronic renal failure (CRF) has been observed in some areas of the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka, where there is a relationship of CRF with the mineral content of drinking water. This subject matter falls under the auspices of Medical Geology, a scientific discipline still in its infancy, and much more concerted studies are needed to attract the attention of medical research.  相似文献

The demersal fish fauna of Albatross Bay, in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Australia, was sampled on seven cruises from August 1986 to November 1988, using a random stratified trawl survey. Four depth zones between 7 and 45 m were sampled during both day and night. The mean biomass of fish from all seven cruises was 297 kg ha–1 for days trawls and 128 kg ha–1 for night trawls. The overall mean catch rates were 922 kg h–1 for day trawls and 412 kg h–1 for night trawls. There were marked differences between cruises in both the biomass and catch rate. Approx 890 000 fish of 237 species were collected. Of these, 25 species comprised 82% of the total biomass and 74% of the overall catch rate. The dominant families were Leiognathidae, Haemulidae and Clupeidae, with Sciaenidae and Dasyatidae important at night.Leiognathus bindus was the most abundant species. Twenty-five species occurred in more than 50% of trawls, withCaranx bucculentus the most frequently caught (96% of all trawls). Thirty four species were predators on prawns; their absolute mean biomass was 50 kg ha–1 during the day and 39 kg ha–1 at night. The corresponding catch rates were 171 and 125 kg h–1. Multiple-regression analyses were used to discriminate the effects of diel, seasonal, depth and cruise patterns. Of the 31 most abundant species, 15 showed diel patterns of abundance; 11 species showed seasonal patterns of abundance; 23 species had differential depth distribution; and 13 species showed significant cruise-to-cruise variation in abundance. Cruise variations in abundance were tested against salinity, temperature, tidal exchange, plankton biomass and prawn abundances as well as periods (and lags) of total rainfall prior to sampling. Only total rainfall showed any significant correlation. Total rainfall over a period of 6 wk immediately prior to sampling showed significant positive correlations with the abundances of five species, with overall daytime catch rates, and with the suite of 34 prawn predators. Rainfall and river runoff into Albatross Bay were significantly correlated. In Albatross Bay, the complex of factors affecting fish abundances and the magnitude of between-cruise differences indicate that such tropical communities may be unpredictable and are not seasonally constant. The high catch rates in Albatross Bay relative to similar tropical areas elsewhere are discussed and attributed to the light exploitation of the Albatross Bay stocks. Other than a prawn fishery, there is no commercial trawling in Albatross Bay. Hence, the only fishing mortality is a result of by-catch from prawn trawling. The annual total of such fish by-catch is probably less than 10% of the estimated standing stock of 93 000 tonnes.  相似文献

Distribution dynamics of fish larvae and juveniles in the coastal waters of the Tanshui River, Taiwan was studied fortnightly using surface horizontal tows with a larval net in daytime during the period from early April through early June 1991. Environmental factors, including water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, transparency and depth at sampling stations, were also monitored. A total of 10737 fish eggs and 1387 individuals, representing 43 families and 93 species, was collected during five cruises from 12 stations in the coastal waters. Most fish were estuarine-dependent marine species. Liza macrolepis, Ambassis gymnocephalus, Terapon jarbua, Mullidae and Gobiidae were the most dominant, making up 64.7% of the total catch. Early life stages, including egg, preflexion, flexion and postflexion larvae were abundant in surface samples. However, yolk-sac larvae were absent in the surface water, probably due to an ontogenetic behavioral shift as a consequence of a change in specific weight during early development. The species composition of fish larvae and juveniles was related to the microhabitats found in the coastal waters. The physico-chemical conditions, along with ontogenetic behavior, played an important role in larval fish distribution in the coastal waters.  相似文献

The effectiveness of the Gatun Lake fresh-water barrier to fish migration of the Panama Canal was examined, based on literature records and recent collections. Six species have migrated to the Pacific and three to the Atlantic Oceans. New records include: Hypleurochilus aequipinnis, Barbulifer ceuthoecus and Oostethus lineatus of Atlantic origin, and Gnathanodon, speciosus of Pacific origin. The majority of Atlantic migrants are known in the Pacific only from the Miraflores Third Lock, a unique ectogenic meromictic lake attached to the Pacific entrance of the canal. The hydrography and biota (including Atlantic algal and crustacean species previously unknown as canal migrants) of the lake are discussed. It is presumed that certain fish migrants transited the canal by associating with fouling material on the underside of ships. The euryhaline species, H. aequipinnis, Lupinoblennius dispar, Lophogobius cyprinoides and Omobranchus punctatus survived in freshwater (0.0‰S) for periods longer than réquired for ship transit of the canal (ca. 8h). The stenohaline migrant Gobiosoma nudum died after 2 h in freshwater, but survived more than 50 h at 2.5‰S. Plans to increase Panama Canal ship transits through the pumping of seawater into Gatún Lake might remove the biological barrier and allow the migration of euryhaline and stenohaline species. We find those plans unwise, and the potential consequences dangerous.  相似文献

The breeding of Euterpina acutifrons, a marine harpacticid copepod, was studied both in the laboratory and in the natural population round Anglesey, England, with special reference to dimorphic males. As a result of successful rearing of the species under laboratory conditions, rates of development at different temperatures, and survival and maturation of all types of adults were studied. The dimorphic males developed faster than the females, and the small males had a shorter development time than the larger individuals. Laboratory observations clearly indicated that the males differ markedly in sexual behaviour, the small male being more potent, readily copulating with females, and always very active in breeding. In natural populations, temperature was found to have a limiting influence on the breeding period. Breeding began when the temperature reached 15° to 16°C, and ceased when it fell to 8°C. The most significant feature was the production of small males in nature; they increased in number with the onset of breeding, and always formed a high proportion of the actively breeding population. Both laboratory and field investigations have shown that the small male is a breeding form, and is apparently an adaptation of the species for carrying out successful breeding in the colder areas of its distribution.  相似文献

Fish were collected at regular intervals over 5 yr (February 1977 to December 1981) from ten shallow-water sites located throughout the lower, middle and upper regions of the large Swan Estuary in temperate southwestern Australia. Analysis of the catch data showed that the total number of species and total density of fishes were both influenced to a greater extent by site and season within the estuary than by year. The number of species and density of fishes within the whole system were greatest during the summer and autumn, when salinities and temperatures were at a maximum, and declined with distance from the estuary mouth. This reflects the trends shown by marine species, which comprise many species that occur only occasionally in the estuary (marine stragglers) and others which enter estuaries regularly and in considerable numbers (marine estuarine-opportunists). The density of marine estuarine-opportunists was also correlated with temperature, reflecting the tendency for the species of this category to congregate in the shallows during the summer and autumn. The similar seasonal aggregations of the single anadromous species and representatives of species that complete their whole life cycle in the estuary were frequently related to spawning. The density of the estuarine category was correlated neither with salinity nor distance from the estuary mouth. The number of estuarine species was also not correlated with distance from the estuary mouth. The density of freshwater species was inversely correlated with salinity and positively correlated with distance from the estuary mouth. The composition of the fish fauna changed progressively through the estuary, with that of the lower estuary being the most discrete. The composition also changed seasonally, particularly in the upper estuary where, during the winter and spring, the volume of freshwater discharge increased greatly and as a consequence the salinity declined markedly. The species diagnostic of the lower estuary were generally marine estuarine-opportunists, whereas those of the upper estuary typically belonged to either the estuarine or anadromous categories. The marine estuarine-opportunistMugil cephalus was, however, also one of the diagnostic species in the upper estuary during the winter and spring. Please address all correspondence and requests for reprints to I. Geochemical characteristics of surficial sediments in the Panangad region of Cochin estuary, the largest brackish-water humid ecosystem in the south-west coast of India, were analysed. Temporal variations in nutrient stoichiometry, seasonal characteristics of redox elements Fe and S, and the phosphorus geochemistry were employed for the purpose. The stoichiometric analysis pointed towards autochthonous origin of organic matter, possibility of nitrogen limitation, and allochthonous modification of redox conditions. Seasonal variations were not statistically significant for all the geochemical parameters, whereas significant spatial variations were observed with lower values at sandy stations, suggesting that the texture of the sediments is the main factor influencing the sediment geochemistry. Significant inter-relations between the geochemical parameters also suggest a common control mechanism. Based on these geochemical characteristics, the study region can be effectively categorized into two distinct zones, viz. (1) erosion and transportation and (2) deposition zones.  相似文献

The populations of many native species have increased or expanded in distribution in recent decades, sometimes with negative consequences to sympatric native species that are rarer or less adaptable to anthropogenic changes to the environment. An example of this phenomenon from the Pacific Northwest is predation by locally abundant pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) on threatened, endangered, or otherwise depleted salmonid (Oncorhynchus spp.) populations. We used survey sampling methodology, acoustic telemetry, and molecular genetics to quantify the amount of harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) predation on a depressed run of coho salmon (O. kisutch) and to determine whether some seals consumed a disproportionately higher number of salmonids than others. Based on a probability sample totaling 759.5 h of observation, we estimated that seals consumed 1161 adult salmonids (95% CI = 503-1818 salmonids) during daylight hours over an 18.9-km estuarine study area in Oregon during an 84-d period in fall 2002. Simultaneous tracking of 56 seals via an acoustic telemetry array indicated that a small proportion of marked seals (12.5%) exhibited behavior that was consistent with specialization on salmonids. These seals spent the majority of their time in the riverine portion of the study area and did so disproportionately more at night than day. Genetic analysis of 116 salmonid structures recovered from 11 seal fecal samples suggested that coho salmon accounted for approximately one-half of total salmonid consumption. Though subject to considerable uncertainty, the combined results lead us to infer that seals consumed 21% (range = 3-63%) of the estimated prespawning population of coho salmon. We speculate that the majority of the predation occurred upriver, at night, and was done by a relatively small proportion of the local seal population. Understanding the extent and nature of pinniped predation can provide important inputs into risk assessments and other modeling efforts designed to aid the conservation and recovery of salmonids in the Pacific Northwest. Such understanding may also help inform management actions designed to reduce the impact of pinniped predation on salmonids, which potentially range from short-term lethal removal programs to long-term ecosystem restoration and protection efforts.  相似文献

Diets of the demersal fishes on the shelf off Iwate, northern Japan   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Diets of demersal fishes were determined on the shelf (ca. 130 m deep) off Iwate, Japan. Samples were taken in three different types of habitat, an artificial reef (AR) site, a natural reef (NR) site, and sandymud bottom (SB) site, from May 1987 to September 1991, mostly every two months. A total of 67 prey items were recognized in the stomachs of 45 predator fish species. The most important preys were the pelagic fishes Sardinops melanostictus and Engraulis japonicus, which comprised 37% wet wt of the overall stomach contents. The percentage of pelagic fishes was highest at AR site, where fish density was highest. The dominant ten species could be divided into five feeding types. The pelagic fish feeders Physiculus maximowiczi and Gadus macrocephalus fed mainly on S. melanostictus. The dietary breadth of P. maximowiczi was wide, while that of Gadus macrocephalus was narrow. The pelagic crustacean feeder Theragra chalcogramma mostly consumed Themisto japonica and euphausiids and showed the least dietary overlap with other fishes. Benthic fish feeders were Hemitripterus villosus and Liparis tanakai. The benthic crustacean feeders Alcichthys alcicornis and Hexagrammos otakii consumed benthic crustaceans as well as pelagic and benthic fishes and showed the largest dietary breadth. The benthic invertebrate feeders Gymnocanthus intermedius, Dexistes rikuzenius and Tanakius kitaharai fed mainly on polychaetes and benthic crustaceans. But Gymnocanthus intermedius consumed a significant proportion of pelagic fishes. Ontogenetic dietary shift was recognized for these fishes. Pelagic fishes were consumed more intensively by larger individuals, especially true of A. alcicornis, Theragra chalcogramma and Gadus macrocephalus. Predominancy of the two most adundant species, P. maximowiczi and A. alcicornis, may be supported by their wide dietary breadth and the significant proportion of pelagic fish in their diets. Interspecific dietary overlap was low in most cases suggesting that food resources were well partitioned, although some high overlap was observed among the pelagic fish feeders, A. alcicornis, and Gymnocanthus intermedius, and among the benthic invertebrate feeders. Interspecific competition seemed more likely in the benthic invertebrate feeders than in the pelagic fish feeders partly because of superabundance of the pelagic prey S. melanostictus.  相似文献

Glucose uptake was measured at three different stations in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The measurements were made at various temperatures (5° to 35°C) and glucose concentrations (3 to 100 g glucose/l). The uptake of almost all samples taken from the surface to 1,500 m was affected primarily by temperature. The temperature dependence of samples from near the transition region between the Kuroshio and the Oyashio current waters was twice as large as that of both current samples. Furthermore, the samples from the former, transition, region and the aphotic samples of the latter, current, regions showed an optimal temperature 15° to 30°C higher than the in situ temperature; the optimal temperature was only 5° to 10°C higher in the photic samples of the stable region. The average potential glucose uptake at/near the optimal temperature was 0.026 g glucose/l/h in the photic zone and 0.015 g glucose/l/h in the aphotic zone. However, after correction by the in situ temperature, the uptake was 0.024 and 0.003 g glucose/l/h, respectively.  相似文献

The community structure of soft-bottom infauna is described for the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica, Central America, with special reference to the relationship between diversity and a tropical estuary. Of the 205 species of invertebrates collected in July, 1980, polychaetes comprised 58.6% by number of species and 68.1% by number of individuals. Density ranged from zero to 8 744 m-2 with a mean of 1 269 m-2 per station, and biomass ranged from zero to 10.986 g m-2 with a mean of 2.010 g m-2. Numerical analysis indicated considerable faunal homogeneity, characterized by polychaetes. Five major polychaete feeding guilds were recognized. From measures of diversity we concluded that the soft-bottom community of the Gulf of Nicoya was not rich for a tropical estuary. Physical processes (riverine runoff and frontal systems) mainly influenced community structure and function in the lower Gulf whereas biological processes (predation) seemed to prevail in the upper Gulf.Southern California Ocean Studies Consortium Contribution No. 23  相似文献

Role of habitat-structure and climatic factors in the population dynamics of the small green bee-eater Merops orientalis was evaluated in three habitats viz., agricultural lands, river banks and human habitations during 1991-1993. The river banks supported relatively high population of bee-eaters (157/Km2) followed by the agricultural lands (101/Km2) and human habitations (58/Km2). Bee-eater populations showed year-wise variations in river banks and human habitations having high values during 1992 (123/Km2) and 1993 (43/Km2) respectively. Agricultural lands showed a significantly low mean density in 1991 than other years. Seasonal variations in the bee-eater densities among the habitats were also recorded. Vegetation structure, food (insects) availability, climatic conditions and human disturbance were the casual factors for variations in bee-eater populations.  相似文献

The fishes occurring in a subtropical mangrove (Avicennia marina) area in Moreton Bay, Australia, were studied for one year (November 1987 to November 1988, inclusive). Fishes within the mangroves were sampled using a block net, whilst those in adjacent waters were sampled using seine and gill nets. Forty six percent of the species, 75% of the number of fishes and 94% of the biomass taken during the study (all methods combined) were of direct importance to regional fisheries. The fish community utilising the habitat within the mangrove forest differed from that occurring in adjacent waters in terms of density, standing crop, species composition and diversity-index values. Standing-crop estimates for the fishes occurring within the mangroves (study period mean ± SD = 25.3 ± 20.4 g m–2) were amongst the highest recorded values for estuarine areas whilst those for adjacent waters (2.9±2.3 g m–2) were comparable to those of other estuarine studies.  相似文献

The south-western quarter of the North Sea (between the Wash and the River Tyne) has been investigated for the presence of dinoflagellates. Extensive net surveys were carried out in March, May and June 1971 and a number of other collections were made in the area. North of Flamborough Head, the spring bloom of diatoms was succeeded by a considerable growth of dinoflagellates, of which Dinophysis norvegica was the most abundant organism. Maximum counts of over 28 million dinoflagellates per m3 were recorded. Distribution charts are given for the most common species. A total of 61 species was found during the course of the survey.  相似文献

The horizontal and vertical distributions of adult mesopelagic fishes are described from acoustic and trawl surveys over the full-depth of 500 m at 169 stations on a longitudinal transect crossing the Humboldt Current (03°45′S, 81°76′W and 18°23′S, 71°13′W) at 50–200 nautical miles off Peru during austral spring (October–November) of 2001, 2002 and 2003. A total of 2,952 kg of fishes was collected, which included 13 families, 23 genera and 28 species. The mesopelagic community is dominated by the families Phosichthyidae (Vinciguerria lucetia), Myctophidae (Diogenichthys laternatus and Lampanyctus idostigma) and Bathylagidae (Leuroglossus urotranus), accounting for 60.4, 12.8 and 3.7%, respectively, of the total catch. Based on horizontal distribution patterns these species were categorized into three groups, i.e. northern-central upwelling front group (L. urotranus, Nemichthys fronto and Scopelarchoides nicholsi), Southern upwelling front group (Hygophum reinhardti, Myctophum nitidulum, Paralepis sp and Scopeloberyx sp.) and pan-Humboldt Current group (V. lucetia, D. laternatus, L. (Nannobrachium) idostigma, L. omostigma, M. aurolaternatum, Triphoturus oculeus, Bathylagus (Melanolagus) berycoides, Leuroglossus stilbius, Argyropelecus affinis, Sternoptyx obscura, Melamphaes sp., Stomias sp. and Scopelosaurus sp.). Nighttime vertical distribution was characterized by a single abundance peak in the upper 50 m. Daytime patterns showed three peaks of abundance: an upper peak, in the upper 100 m, a midwater peak between 200 and 400 m, coinciding with an oxygen minimum zone, and a deeper peak between 400 and 500 m. V. lucetia was dominant in the upper and midwater peaks while myctophids, other planctivorous and piscivorous fishes were distributed in the midwater. Acoustic back-scattered energy (S a) was ubiquitous in the region. Maximum S a was mainly located between 11° and 18°S during day and night. V. lucetia is a significant component of the sound-scattering layers in the Humboldt Current Region off Peru.  相似文献

Plankton collected at discrete depths in Santa Monica Bay, California, USA, during January 1982 were examined for fish eggs and larvae that had been attacked or consumed by zooplankton. The bongo net remained open for only 3 min and samples were preserved within 5 min of capture. Juvenile and adult fishes that had been captured by otter trawl and preserved within 20 min of capture were examined for ingested fish eggs and larvae. Three copepods (Corycaeus anglicus, Labidocera trispinosa, and Tortanus discaudatus), one euphausid larva (Nyctiphanes simplex), one amphipod (Monoculoides sp.), and an unidentified decapod larva were found attached to fish larvae in the preserved plankton samples (attachment to 23% of the fish larvae was observed in one sample). Overall, about 5% of the white croaker (Genyonemus lineatus) larvae and 2% of the northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) larvae had attached zooplankton predators. Most fish larvae with attached zooplankton predators were small. We found no indication of zooplankton predation on fish eggs. Few fish eggs and larvae were found in the digestive tracts of juvenile or adult fishes, and the ingested fish larvae were relatively large. The discussion considers apparent preyspecificity of the zooplankton predators as well as potential biases that may be associated with preserved samples collected by nets.  相似文献
