Fishes were trawled from Albatross Bay, on the west coast of Cape York, north Queensland (12°45S; 141°30E) during 4 yr, from August 1986 to April 1989. Penaeids were the first or second most important prey item by dry weight in 14 of the 34 penaeid-eating fish species, and in 12 of the species by frequency of occurrence. Eighteen species of Penaeidae were identified in fish stomachs. The five commercially important species comprised over 70% by dry weight of all the penaeids eaten by all the fishes;Metapenaeus ensis, Penaeus semisulcatus andP. merguiensis comprised 22, 28 and 11%, respectively. Commercially unimportant penaeids comprised 85% by numbers of all penaeids eaten. Larger fishes ate larger penaeids, mainly commercially important species, while smaller fishes ate smaller penaeids, mainly commercially unimportant species. All penaeid-eating fishes also ate some teleost prey and many were primarily piscivorous. Most penaeid-eating fish species took more benthic prey than bentho-pelagic and pelagic prey combined. The fishes with the strongest predation impact on commercially important penaeids wereCaranx bucculentus and four species of elasmobranchs. The highest impact on commercially unimportant penaeids was made by several species of smaller but abundant fishes. An overall annual estimate of 2950 t yr–1 of commercially important penaeids is eaten by all fishes, a much higher figure than the average 870 t yr–1 taken by the fishery. This study highlights the need for accurate measurement of the abundance of penaeid predators as well as analyses of their diets when assessing the impact of predators on prawn stocks.  相似文献

The diets of one ray species (Rhinobatus typus) and three shark species (Carcharhinus cautus, Negaprion acutidens, Rhizoprionodon acutus) undergo size-related changes and differ among these species in the nearshore waters of a large subtropical embayment (Shark Bay) in which these elasmobranchs are abundant, thereby reducing the potential for competition for food within and among these four species. R. typus fed almost exclusively on penaeid prawns and portunid crabs, which is reflected in its narrow dietary breadth, whereas different species of teleosts constituted a major component of the diets of each size class of the three shark species. The prey consumed by the three shark species was diverse, with representatives of 15 teleost families being consumed by C. cautus and substantial volumes of cephalopods being ingested by that species and R. acutus. The pronounced differences in the diet of the single ray species and three shark species reflect differences between a bottom-dwelling and more pelagic life, and between modes of feeding and relative mouth sizes. The relative contributions of the different species of teleost to the diets of the three shark species varied. Thus, although each of these species fed on atherinids, labrids and sillaginids, C. cautus also consumed substantial amounts of platycephalids and terapontids and R. acutus and N. acutidens also ingested considerable amounts of clupeids. Furthermore, R. acutus, which is the only one of the four species that typically occurs over seagrass, was the only species that fed on the centropomid Psammoperca waigensis, which is very abundant in seagrass meadows. However, the sparid Rhabdosargus sarba, which lives in unvegetated areas, was never ingested by R. acutus, but was consumed by C. cautus and N. acutidens. As the individuals of R. typus increased in size, they progressively consumed proportionately smaller volumes of the penaeid prawns Penaeus merguiensis and Melicertus latisulcatus and relatively greater volumes of the portunid crab Portunus pelagicus, which is slightly larger and has a harder exoskeleton. In addition to teleosts, large C. cautus ingested substantial volumes of portunid crabs and ophidian reptiles, presumably sea snakes, while large N. acutidens also fed on the ray R. typus.Communicated by G.F. The feeding ecology of the European shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) and the great cormorant (P. carbo) in Iceland was studied. These bird species may affect their marine environment, for instance, by predating on several commercially important fish species in coastal waters. The shag and cormorant diets were studied throughout the year in the period 1996–2000 by analysing the content of about 300 stomachs from each species. The shag relies heavily on sandeel (Ammodytes marinus) in the breeding season, whereas bull-rout (Myoxocephalus scorpius) and gadoids (Gadidae) become increasingly important in autumn and winter. The main food of the cormorant in all areas and seasons is the bull-rout. Depending on location and season, secondary food consists mainly of butterfish (Pholis gunnellus), gadoids and flatfishes (Pleuronectiformes). Similarity in diets of these two co-existing bird species was least in the breeding season when overlap in the birds’ distribution was greatest. The results suggest that predation by shags and cormorants could sometimes affect the stocks of the commercially important saithe (Pollachius virens) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) in Iceland.  相似文献

Penaeid shrimps comprise an important portion of the world's industrial fisheries and mariculture. In the Southwest Atlantic, Penaeus (Farfantepenaeus) subtilis, P. (F.) paulensis, P. (F.) brasiliensis and P. (Litopenaeus) schmitti are the most important commercially exploited species. Despite their high commercial value, there is little information available on the different aspects of their biology or genetics and almost no data on stock structure. Also, the taxonomic status of P. subtilis populations in relation to P. paulensis and their geographic ranges have been recently questioned. In this paper we used both nuclear (allozymes) and mitochondrial (cytochrome oxidase subunit 1) data to compare species of south-western Atlantic penaeids and to estimate their phylogenetic relationships. We could readily discriminate among the four main Brazilian penaeid species and detected a fifth, new, species of Penaeus. This new species corresponded to one of the described morphotypes of P. subtilis. Based on these analyses, the geographic ranges of P. subtilis and P. paulensis were clarified. Our data also support the conclusion of Baldwin et al. (1998) that the subgenus Farfantepenaeus is polyphyletic. Received: 6 January 2000 / Accepted: 13 June 2000  相似文献

A study was made from January 1988 to March 1989 of the penaid prawns in the Great Bitter Lake and Lake Timsah located in the central part of the Suez Canal. Two species of Red Sea origin were investigated,Metapenaeus stebbingi andTrachypenaeus curvirostris; the former is by far the commoner. Both species displayed seasonal breeding over the period April to October, with peaks in the early and late parts of the season.M. stebbingi had two main cohorts each year. A spring-spawned cohort survived 16 mo, and attained modal sizes of 23 mm carapare length (CL) for females and 16 to 17 mm CL for males. The autumn-spawned cohort survived 13 mo, and reached modal sizes of 20 mm and 15 mm CL for males and females, respectively. The reasons for the success ofM. stebbingi in the Canal lakes, in contrast to other Lessepsian penaeids which have flourished in the Mediterranean Sea, have been considered. The main factors are that it is essentially a shallow-water species, with excellent tolerance of salinity variations and adverse environments. However, the Canal lake populations have smaller maximum sizes, and mature earlier, than those in open seas.  相似文献

Juveniles of the dendrobranchiate decapod Penaeus indicus take up radiolabelled zinc from solution at all exposure concentrations studied from 5.6 to 100 g l–1, with an uptake rate constant of 0.045 l g–1 day–1 at 15 salinity and 25°C. Over the first 10 days of zinc exposure, the new zinc taken up is added to the existing zinc content of the prawn with no significant excretion; over this period the rate of accumulation of radiolabelled zinc is a measure of the absolute zinc uptake rate from solution. Over the next 10 days of zinc exposure to 10 g Zn l–1, however, zinc is excreted at about half the rate of uptake resulting in a raised body concentration of zinc. Moulting had no significant effect on the accumulation of zinc. Newly accumulated zinc is distributed to all organs with the highest proportions of body content being found in the exoskeleton, followed by the muscle, the hepatopancreas and the antennal organs. Radiolabelled zinc is subsequently lost from all organs. Unlike caridean shrimps or prawns (pleocyemate decapods), therefore, penaeids (dendrobranchiate decapods) do not show regulation of zinc body concentrations to a constant level over a range of dissolved zinc bioavailabilities by matching zinc excretion to zinc uptake. Nevertheless, unlike amphipod crustaceans, P. indicus does excrete some of the zinc newly accumulated from solution after a time delay. Unlike their caridean counterparts, penaeid prawns inhabiting anthropogenically contaminated coastal waters with raised zinc bioavailabilities can be expected to contain raised body concentrations of zinc.Communicated by J.P. The muscle myogen patterns of some penaeid prawns studied by electrophoresis in cellulose acetate membrane are presented. Each pattern was species specific and appears to be independent of sex. The results suggest that muscle myogen patterns could be useful in taxonomic studies of penaeid prawns. Specimens preserved in phenoxyethanol were compared with fresh specimens. Preservation resulted in some losses of protein zones and, in cases where sufficient zones are preserved, the method could be used to advantage for solving taxonomic problems. Like many benthic marine invertebrates the lagoonal cockle Cerastoderma glaucum Bruguière (Mollusca: Bivalvia) suffers extensive mortality between settling out of the plankton and reaching adolescence. It is thought that predation could be a major cause of this mortality. Experiments were conducted in aquaria to assess the influence of predation on the survival of juvenile lagoonal cockles. Newly settled spat (collected from Holkham Salts Hole, a lagoon in North Norfolk) were enclosed with potential predators at field densities. Predators used were fish, prawns and polychaetes (singly or combination). The numbers and sizes of the surviving cockles were measured after a 4-week period to establish the extent of predation, and the results were consistent with predation by the fish (Pomatoschistus microps) being a major causative agent of the mortality seen in the field. This reinforces the idea of epibenthic predation as an important structuring element for marine benthic communities. The effect of post-settlement juvenile mortality on cockle population demographics is considered, and other possible causes of mortality in the field are discussed. Despite facing similar constraints imposed by the environment, significant variation in life history traits frequently exists among species generally considered to comprise a single ecological guild. For juvenile flatfishes, constraints on foraging activity include variation in light and prey availability, as well as predation risk. This paper describes the visual constraints on, and divergent foraging strategies of three co-occurring north Pacific flatfish species, northern rock sole (Lepidopsetta polyxystra), Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis), and English sole (Pleuronectes vetulus). Visual foraging abilities measured in the laboratory decreased rapidly below 10−4 μmol photons·m−2 s−1, and were similar among species. Despite similar sensory constraints, field sampling in August 2004 at a Kodiak Island nursery site (Holiday Beach, 57o41.2′ N, 152o27.7′ W) identified species differences in diets, diel foraging patterns, and within-nursery depth distributions. Northern rock sole and English sole fed primarily on bivalve siphons and polychaetes, whereas mysids dominated the diets of Pacific halibut. Northern rock sole were geographically the most widespread but feeding activity was temporally restricted to the dusk period. Pacific halibut were rare in shallow depths (<5 m) and fed most intensively prior to dusk. English sole fed throughout the daylight hours and were abundant only in the shallowest (<5 m) habitats. These differences in diets, foraging times, and habitat use appear related to previously documented species-specific behavioral characteristics as well as general spatial (increasing with depth) and temporal (increasing during foraging activity) variations in predation risk. At one extreme, the conservative behavioral strategy of northern rock sole may permit use of a broader range of foraging habitats, whereas English sole may be restricted to shallow water by limited behavioral responses to predation threat. These observations demonstrate that the appearance of habitat partitioning is not due to differences in sensory ability, but reflects multi-faceted, species-specific responses to the ecological tradeoffs between foraging and predation risks.  相似文献

Although predation by fishes is thought to structure benthic invertebrate communities on coral reefs, evidence to support this claim has been difficult to obtain. We deployed an array of eight sponge species on Conch Reef (16 m depth) off Key Largo, Florida, USA, and used a remote video-camera to record fish activity near the array continuously during five daylight periods (6 h for 1 d, at least 11.5 h for 4 d) and one night period (11 h). Of the eight sponge species, four were from adjacent reefs (Agelas wiedenmayeri, Geodia neptuni, Aplysina fistularis, and Pseudaxinella lunaecharta), and four were from a nearby mangrove habitat (Chondrosia collectrix, Geodia gibberosa, Halichondria sp., andTedania ignis). Each species of reef sponge was chosen to match the corresponding mangrove species in form and color (black, brown, yellow, and red, respectively). Predation events only occurred during daylight hours. Tallies of the number of times fishes bit sponges revealed intense feeding by the expected species of sponge-eating fishes, such as the angelfishHolacanthus bermudensis, H. tricolor, andPomacanthus arcuatus, the cowfishLactophrys quadricornis, and the filefishCantherhines pullus, but surprisingly also by the parrotfishSparisoma aurofrenatum andS. chrysopterum. Of 35 301 bites recorded, 50.8% were taken by angelfish, 34.8% by parrotfish, and 13.7% by trunkfish and filefish. Mangrove sponges were preferred by all reef fishes; 96% of bites were taken from mangrove species, with angelfish preferringChondrosia collectrix and parrotfish preferringGeodia gibberosa. Fishes often bit the same sponge repetitively, and frequently consumed entire samples within 30 min of their deployment. Sponge color did not influence fish feeding. Two of the four mangrove sponge-species deployed on the array were also found living in cryptic habitats on adjacent reefs and were rapidly consumed by fishes when exposed. Our results demonstrate the importance of fish predation in controlling the distribution of sponges on Caribbean reefs.  相似文献

Penaeid prawns were sampled with a small seine net to test whether catches of postlarvae and juveniles in seagrass were affected by the distance of the seagrass (mainly Zostera capricorni) from mangroves and the density of the seagrass in a subtropical marine embayment. Sampling was replicated on the western and eastern sides of Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia. Information on catches was combined with broad-scale spatial information on the distribution of habitats to estimate the contribution of four different categories of habitat (proximal dense seagrass, distal dense seagrass, proximal sparse seagrass, distal sparse seagrass) to the overall population of small prawns in these regions of Moreton Bay. The abundance of Penaeus plebejus and Metapenaeus bennettae was significantly and consistently greater in dense seagrass proximal to mangroves than in other types of habitat. Additionally, sparse seagrass close to mangroves supported more of these species than dense seagrass farther away, indicating that the role of spatial arrangement of habitats was more important than the effects of structural complexity alone. In contrast, the abundance of P. esculentus tended to be greatest in sparse seagrass distal from mangroves compared with the other habitats. The scaling up of the results from different seagrass types suggests that proximal seagrass beds on both sides of Moreton Bay provide by far the greatest contribution of juvenile M. bennettae and P. plebejus to the overall populations in the Bay.Communicated by M.S. Carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen stable isotope ratio techniques were used in 1989 and 1990 to evaluate the relative importance of algae and of mangrove detritus in the nutrition of two penaeid prawn species on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Mangrove detritus was found to contribute to the nutrition of juvenile Penaeus merguiensis de Man living within tidal creeks, but not to adult P. merguiensis and juvenile and adult Parapenaeopsis sculptilis (Heller) captured offshore. Results from radiotracer feeding studies, with refractory 14C mangrove lignocellulose as the food source, indicated that juvenile P. merguiensis from tidal creeks assimilated mangrove carbon with an efficiency of 13.4%. This did not differ significantly (P=0.05) from the assimilation efficiencies of juvenile and adult P. sculptilis living offshore (10.0 and 10.9%, respectively); these values were significantly higher (P<0.001) than for adult P. merguiensis (2.1%). Thus, the differential contribution of mangrove material to the nutrition of prawns in the tidal creeks and offshore was not related to differences in the prawn's ability to utilize detritus. Instead, our analysis of C stable isotopes in sediments indicated that mangrove detritus was generally more abundant within the tidal creeks than offshore. Juvenile prawns in the tidal creeks may also utilize mangrove material indirectly by feeding on small detritivorous invertebrates. Stable isotope analyses suggest that benthic microalgae constitute the other major dietary component for prawns living in tidal creeks. Prawns offshore were utilizing mainly phytoplankton-based material.  相似文献

The diets of 4 species of asteroids were observed for `9 months on the piles of a pier at Rapid Bay, South Australia.Coscinasterias calamaria (Gray) fed on molluscs, crustaceans and moribund items.Patiriella brevispina H.L. Clark fed on compound ascidians, sponges and moribund items.Tosia australis Gray andPetricia vernicina (Lamarck) ate mainly sponges, bryozoans and compound ascidians. A short-term (6 months) caging experiment showed that 5 common species of sessile animals-3 sponges and 2 compound ascidians-were significantly reduced by seastar predation. Nevertheless, the amount eaten, considered with seastar densities and distributions, indicates that the seastars are unimportant in influencing the utilization of space by sessile fauna. From comparing caged and uncaged controls, we tentatively suggest that other predators are also unimportant, and that competition for substrate space and for access to the water column is (and, has been during the evolution of these sessile organisms) far more influential.  相似文献

This study provides information about differences in composition of ingested zooplankton amongst bivalve species coexisting in the same area in a period from May 2009 to December 2010. The study was conducted at the Mali Ston Bay (42°51′ N, 17°40′ E)—the most important bivalve aquaculture area in the eastern Adriatic Sea. Stomach content analysis was performed on cultured species—Ostrea edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis, and commercially important bivalve species from their natural environment—Modiolus barbatus and Arca noae. Results confirmed carnivory in bivalves, both from natural and cultured populations, but cultured species had higher numbers of zooplankters than those living on the seabed. The most abundant taxa were bivalve larvae, followed by tintinnids, copepods, unidentified eggs and gastropod larvae. Recorded numbers of bivalve larvae in M. galloprovincialis stomach were the highest so far reported and show that mussels impact the availability of natural spat.  相似文献

Two specimens ofPalaemon serratus Pennant (of about 4 g wet weight) were each given intrahaemocoelic injections of [U-14C] acetate. They were maintained under controlled conditions, and the release of14CO2 and other labelled metabolites was followed for 6 days. The prawns were then sacrificed and fractionated into trichloroacetic acid soluble compounds, lipids, nucleic acids and a protein/chitin residue. Little or no14C had been incorporated into arginine, methionine, valine, threonine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, histidine, phenylalanine and tryptophan. It was inferred thatP. serratus cannot synthesize these amino acids from ordinarily available materials, and that the prawns have an absolute dietary requirement for them. The glucosamine isolated from the protein/chitin residue contained more radioactivity than any of the other compounds examined. This implies a rapid turnover of glucosamine and chitin inP. serratus. The gain in weight of prawns fed on compound diets containing freeze-dried cod muscle was about 70% that of prawns fed on fresh mussel mantle. Predigestion of freeze-dried cod muscle with proteolytic enzymes did not significantly enhance its nutritional valve as assessed by increases in weight. Prawns fed two other compounded diets containing proteins of low nutritional value (gelatin and zein, respectively) grew at about 1/5 the rate of prawns fed fresh mussel mantle. Supplementation of the gelatin and zein in these diets with tryptophan, and with lysine plus tryptophan, respectively, failed to augment their nutritional value significantly.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal patterns of predation on seeds of the seagrass Phyllospadix torreyi S. Watson were quantified at four sites near Santa Barbara, California, USA. Over a period of four flowering seasons during 1995 to 1998, monthly patterns of seed fall and intensity of seed predation were similar among sites, but were temporally quite variable. Abundance of dispersed seeds varied greatly both among seasons and years. Within any one year, seeds were present in the environment every month, but they peaked in abundance during the fall months following the annual flowering period. Seeds were more abundant during the earlier years of the study. The intensity of predation steadily increased throughout the study period, from a low of ≤10% seeds consumed during 1995 to ∼50% consumption by 1997, and it was not correlated with abundance of seeds in the environment. Pre-dispersal seed loss also was estimated in two flowering seasons by counting the numbers of seeds consumed prior to release from the plant, and was relatively low (<15%). No differences were detected among the four study sites in patterns of pre-dispersal loss. Field surveys were done at two sites to identify potential seed predators. Three of the most abundant species identified in these surveys were tested in the laboratory to determine size-specific patterns of feeding activity and to assess which early life stages of P. torreyi (fruits within spadices, dehisced fruits, seedlings) were most vulnerable to predation. All three of the early life stages were consumed. The crabs Pugettiaproducta (Randall) and Pachygrapsus crassipes Randall were much more voracious predators than the isopod Idotea resecata Stimpson. Stomach contents of 687 orange roughy [Hoplostethus atlanticus (Collett, 1889)] from the Challenger Plateau, sampled in March, July and November 1984, were examined. The relative importance of different components of the diet was assessed using three feeding indices which combine, in different ways, percentage frequency of occurrence, percentage number, and percentage weight of prey categories. For both sexes, for all size classes and at any time of the year, the most frequent and abundant components of the diet were prawns, followed by fish, squid, amphipods and mysids. The main natant decapod families were Oplophoridae, Pasiphaeidae, and Sergestidae. Fish, mainly Chauliodontidae and Myctophidae, were the most important prey by weight. Most prey species were benthopelagic and mesopelagic organisms which move towards the surface at night. However, H. atlanticus can be caught by bottom trawl (between 750 and 1 200 m) during any 24 h period, and there was no evidence of vertical migration in search of their prey. When the fish grow in length, there is a transition in the diet from prawns, mysids, and fish, to prawns, fish and squid. Squid were not found in the stomach contents of fish smaller than 20 cm. These dietary changes may be linked to modifications in morphology with growth. The relative proportions of the main dietary items, and in particular the natant decapod families, varied with time of the year. Also, the stomach data seem to indicate an increasing importance of fish and squid in the diet in deeper water. H. atlanticus appears to be an opportunistic predator, consuming a wide variety of invertebrates and fishes. Our results provide evidence to support the notion that benthopelagic predators which consume vertically migrating mesopelagic fish, have an important role in the transfer of energy to the benthos.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of the most abundant eggs and larvae of teleost fish species on the continental shelf and slope off the northern Benguela region was studied in April 1986. The horizontal and vertical distribution of eggs and larvae were analysed together with environmental data, in order to determine patterns of ichthyoplankton distribution. Both species composition and relative egg and larval abundance levels exhibited important latitudinal differences during a period of quiescent upwelling with an intense intrusion of Angolan water into the system. Larval diversity was higher in the northern part of the study area, where, because of the intrusion of the warmer Angolan water, the water column was more stratified than in the southern part, where the affect of upwelling of South Atlantic Central Water was continuous and only a few species spawned. The frontal zone appeared to be a nursery ground for the most important pelagic species of the region:Trachurus trachurus capensis, Engraulis capensis, andSardinops ocellatus. Vertical egg and larval distributions showed evidence of stratification, with highest concentrations located in the uppermost 50 m. In comparison, during periods of intense upwelling, longitudinal gradients were responsible for the horizontal distribution of ichthyoplankton, and the vertical distribution of eggs and larvae were much more extensive because of the greater mixing of the water column.  相似文献

Established hypotheses state that the rate of predation on coral reef fish should be highest during crepuscular periods (dawn and dusk) intermediate diurnally, and lowest nocturnally. We examined the relative risk of predation on juvenile French grunts (Haemulon flavolineatum Desmarest) during diurnal, dusk, and nocturnal periods on the fore- and back-reef at Teague Bay, U.S. Virgin Islands in July and August 1996. Tethering-devices recorded the exact amount of time between attaching a prey fish to its tether and subsequent predation on the prey fish. As tethering of prey usually inflates the actual rate of predation, times from our tethering devices were used to establish only the relative predation risk among treatments. During 3-h diurnal and nocturnal tethering experiments, relative predation was significantly higher during the nocturnal period, and differences between side of reef were not significant. In 30-min tethering experiments, which included all three time periods, the relative predation risk was significantly higher during dusk and nocturnal periods than during the diurnal period. Relative predation was not significantly different between the dusk and nocturnal periods, or between side of reef during any time period. The unexpected finding that the diurnal period had the lowest relative risk of predation indicates that the timing of predation events on reefs, as well as the adaptive reasons for nocturnal larval settlement, may need to be re-examined. The sympatric echinoids Diadema savignyi and D. setosum coexist in shallow reef lagoons throughout East Africa. The reproductive strategies of these echinoids were studied to investigate reproductive isolation as a possible mechanism for maintaining the coexistence of these closely related species. The annual reproductive cycle and lunar periodicity were determined by gonad index measurements, histological examination of gametogenesis, and induction of spawning with injections of KCl. The peak reproductive period of D. savignyi coincided with the north-east monsoon period (when light and temperatures are high) as gonad indices were high (>8%) beginning in February and peaked at 9.7% in May. Gonad indices subsequently rapidly decreased (by 26%) in June at the beginning of the cooler south-east monsoon period. However, the presence of sperm and ova in most months of the year indicates continuous gametogenesis with reduced reproductive effort during the cooler months. The annual cycle for D. setosum showed less of a seasonal trend as gonad indices remained above 7% throughout much of the year but tended to be highest when temperatures were lower. This is the first confirmation of continuous reproduction in these two species at the equator. The reproductive patterns of both species remained consistent over 2 years of sampling. Both species exhibited a synchronized lunar spawning periodicity during the 3 months sampled, with D. setosum spawning on lunar days 8–10 and D. savignyi spawning after the full moon (lunar days 17–18). Whereas spawning in D. savignyi was very tightly synchronized, 20% of D. setosum individuals still spawned after the peak spawning period. The coexistence of these closely related species appears to be maintained by temporal reproductive isolation during the lunar spawning period reinforced by seasonal differences in reproductive effort.Communicated by O.
