Bleaching of corals results from the loss of their symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) and/or pigments. The supply of photoassimilates provided by the zooxanthellae to the coral declines during bleaching and reduces the ability to activate energy-costly processes such as maintenance, growth and reproduction. In the present study we compared the competitive outcomes, expressed as overgrowth and changes in colony sizes of Oculina patagonica (an encrusting Mediterranean stony coral) and the bryozoan Watersipora sp., growing in contact with each other, during and between bleaching events. Year-round observations of tagged colonies showed alternating competitive outcomes: O. patagonica wins over Watersipora sp. between bleaching events, but loses during bleaching events. Using the 14C-point-labeling technique on coral tissue, we examined intra-colonial translocation of photosynthetic products from the point-tissue labeling towards interaction zones. In non-bleached O. patagonica, competition resulted in preferentially oriented translocation of 14C products to the interaction zone located up to 8 cm away from the tissue-labeling site. Sites opposite the interaction zone received significantly less labeled photoassimilates compared to the interaction zone. In bleached colonies (40-85% bleached surface area), such translocation did not occur, probably explaining the failure to compete with the encrusting neighbor Watersipora sp. Our findings demonstrate the importance of colonial integration and resource orientation for the competitive superiority of O. patagonica.  相似文献

Marine bryozoans have a variety of behavioural reactions that are associated with different functions: feeding, cleaning, removal of filtered water, gamete release, avoidance reactions and, probably, sensation. Coordinated activities of polypides are regulated neurophysiologically, physiologically, structurally and, possibly, hormonally. Several group reactions are supposedly non-coordinated. Group autozooidal reactions and different types of colonial behaviour were observed and recorded for 17 bryozoan species and subspecies from the White and Barents Seas. Three local collective reactions (synchronised scanning, repeated particle transfer by circular water currents, and feeding and cleaning of the colony surface by "chains" of inclined lophophores) are described for the first time. The formation of water outlets (chimneys) was observed in four species with encrusting colonies. A new type of chimney was discovered in large colonies of Tegella armifera, in which chimneys are formed by temporary retraction of 10-12 neighbouring polypides. The space thus formed is surrounded by equitentacled lophophores standing vertically. Chimneys associated with elevated areas on the colony surface (monticules) were found in two species. In contrast to all previously published speculations and observations, the monticules were often places of incurrent rather than excurrent flow, and water outlets were formed in depressions between monticules. In Schizomavella lineata, monticules change their function from incurrent to excurrent after polypide degeneration. Conditions for the origin of various types of water outlets are discussed.  相似文献

Eighteen percent and 47% of two populations of Ophiocoma echinata in the Florida Keys were undergoing regeneration. An individual would take approximately 720 days to completely regenerate three arms. Regeneration of three arms had a greater effect on gonad production in females than in males, and reduced storage material in the stomach of both. Regeneration in O. echinata was estimated to be 0.07 kJ m-2 day-1, which could provide the equivalent of 0.07% of primary production on a reef to higher trophic levels per day.  相似文献

The effects of exposure to sediment-associated tri-n-butyltin chloride (TBTCl) were examined in the euryhaline European flounder, Platichthys flesus (L.). The effects were quantified by measuring the changes in sodium efflux; Na+/K+-ATPase activity; and the numbers, areas, and distribution of chloride cells in the gills of freshwater-adapted fish, following a rapid transfer to seawater. Following the transfer to seawater, the Na+/K+-ATPase activity and the sodium efflux were significantly increased in the control group but remained unchanged in the TBTCl-exposed group. The normal morphological changes to the gill epithelium associated with seawater adaptation, which involve chloride cell distribution, took place in the control group but were significantly inhibited or delayed in the TBTCl group. The results presented in this study lead to the conclusion that environmental concentrations of tri-n-butyltin chloride in sediments are capable of significantly disrupting both the physiological and the morphological components of iono-regulatory functions of an estuarine flatfish.  相似文献

This study develops energy budgets and estimates feeding rates for two macrourid fishes, Coryphaenoides acrolepis, dominant in the bathyal eastern North Pacific, and the abyssal cosmopolitan species, Coryphaenoides armatus. Daily energy expenditure by C. acrolepis was nearly twice that of C. armatus. C. acrolepis allocated nearly equal amounts of energy to metabolism and growth. Once sexual maturity was reached reproduction became the dominant energetic cost. Either these costs are necessary to retain adequate numbers of eggs and larvae on the continental slopes, or this fish does not reproduce on an annual basis and the calculated costs are an overestimate. C. armatus allocated relatively more energy to metabolism than growth. It may be semelparous, and this strategy would be of great energetic savings in its food-poor but stable environment. Individual daily ration for C. acrolepis decreased from 0.31% to 0.07% of body weight (BW) and for C. armatus from 0.12% to 0.02% BW with increasing fish length. These rates are substantially lower than those for fishes living in cold waters on the continental shelves. The population feeding rates for C. acrolepis ranged from 0.8 to 15 kg km-2 day-1 and for C. armatus from 5 to 2,800 g km-2 day-1. The scavenging behaviour of C. acrolepis was used to investigate the role of carrion as a food supply to the deep-sea benthos. It was estimated that the carrion eaten by C. acrolepis is equivalent to 0.04 mg C m-2 day-1 or only 0.2-0.4% of the average small particulate flux. Carrion consumption is important for scavengers like C. acrolepis, but it is not an important component of the carbon flux into the deep-sea benthic environment.  相似文献

In demersal fish species with a pelagic larval stage, settlement patterns may be a consequence of variations in larval supply, habitat selection at settlement, and processes acting between the time of settlement and the time of benthic sampling. This study describes temporal (1994-1998) and spatial variation in plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) settlement densities in four semi-isolated nursery areas with similar habitat characteristics, in the non-tidal Gullmarsfjord on the west coast of Sweden. Juvenile abundance varied by a factor of ten, both among years and among nursery grounds. For the 3 years when larval sampling was undertaken (1994-1996) and all nursery areas, there was a significant positive relationship between larval supply and juvenile abundance (linear regression: r2=0.45, n=24, P<0.001). On the southern side of the fjord, a significant positive relationship between larval and juvenile abundance was found in one area (r2=0.62, n=6, P<0.05). The absolute mortality rate of plaice after settlement was related to the initial settlement density (r2=0.95, n=20, P<0.001), and to the abundance of predatory shrimps Crangon crangon (r2=0.44, n=20, P<0.01). Plaice otoliths were found in 6% of the shrimp stomachs analysed from an area with high density (13.3 m-2) of newly settled plaice. The present study suggests that the density of juvenile plaice was limited by larval supply to the nursery grounds. Consistency in the relative abundance of juveniles among nursery grounds between years also suggested that some nursery areas may be in the settlement shadow of others. The irregular nature of the coastline in combination with larval depletion could thereby cause small-scale (103-104 m) variation in settlement densities of the same order of magnitude as the inter-annual variability in recruitment to individual nursery grounds.  相似文献

In April-May 1998, mass coral bleaching was observed in the lagoon of Rangiroa Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia. Six months later, the extent of bleaching-induced coral mortality was assessed at three sites. Corals in the fast-growing genus Pocillopora had experienced >99% mortality. Many large colonies of the slow-growing genus Porites (mean horizontal cross-sectional area 5.8 m2) had also died - a phenomenon not previously observed in French Polynesia and virtually unprecedented world-wide. At one site, 25% of colonies, or 44% of the pre-bleaching cover of living Porites, experienced whole-colony mortality. At the two other sites, recently dead Porites accounted for 41% and 82% of the pre-bleaching live cover. Mortality in Porites was negatively correlated with depth between 1.5 and 5 m. Using a 50-year dataset of mean monthly sea surface temperature (SST), derived from ship- and satellite-borne instruments, we show that bleaching occurred during a period of exceptionally high summer SST. 1998 was the first year in which mean monthly SSTs exceeded the 1961-1990 upper 95% confidence limit (29.4°C) for a period of three consecutive months. We suggest that the sustained 3-month anomaly in local summer SST was a major cause of coral mortality, but do not discount the synergistic effect of solar radiation. Recovery of the size-frequency distribution of Porites colonies to pre-bleaching levels may take at least 100 years.  相似文献

Temporal variation in the diet and chick growth of rhinoceros auklets (Cerorhinca monocerata), on Teuri Island, Sea of Japan, was studied to understand how local marine environmental changes affect the reproduction of this piscivorous seabird. The food delivered by parents to chicks was sampled every 1-2 weeks from late May to July, 1994-1998. Overall, the diet of nestling rhinoceros auklets consisted of (by mass) 61% Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), 18% Japanese sand lance (Ammodytes personatus), 18% Japan Sea greenling (Pleurogrammus azonus), 2% other fish and 1% squid. Among years, the contribution of anchovy ranged from 16% to 93%. Once anchovy occurred in the diet, it dominated (80% on average) thereafter. Accordingly, when anchovy appeared in the diet early in the chick-rearing season (1994, 1998), the contribution of anchovy overall was large. The first appearance of anchovy in the diet of auklets late in the summer of 1997 was possibly related to negatively anomalous sea-surface temperature. Food loads composed of anchovy (34.0 g) were heavier than those of sand lance (22.5 g) and greenling (28.5 g). The energy density of anchovies also was higher: 6.3 kJ g-1 wet mass compared to 0+ greenling (4.78 kJ g-1) and 0+ sand lance (3.78 kJ g-1). Thus, a high proportion of anchovy in the diet resulted in high food load mass, high daily growth rates of chicks and high fledging success. This study highlighted the importance of the time of arrival of migratory high-lipid prey, which is influenced by local oceanographic conditions, to the reproductive performance of a piscivorous seabird.  相似文献

The influence of oxygen concentration on total and basal metabolism, scope of activity, drag force and duration of jerks, time spent swimming and energy cost of locomotion in Moina micrura Hellich females cultured under hypo- and normoxia was investigated. Scope of activity (Ql) of hemoglobin-rich red individuals (Ma) acclimated to hypoxia depended less upon oxygen concentration than that of non-acclimated, pale individuals (Mna). Within the range 10-0.3 mg O2 l-1 Ql decreased 4.4-fold in Ma and 62.5-fold in Mna. In both Ma and Mna the integral drag force of antenna fell from 0.22ǂ.07 to 0.12ǂ.04 dyn (1 dyn=1·10-5 N), the duration of jerks increased from 0.06ǂ.01 to 0.1ǂ.02 s in the range from ~2.0 mg O2 l-1 to sublethal oxygen concentrations. At 0.7-0.8 mg O2 l-1 Mna stopped filtration and increased time spent swimming. In contrast, even under more severe hypoxia (~0.2 mg O2 l-1), Ma maintained their filtering activity using energy (up to 80% of total metabolism) achieved due to increased oxygen capacity of the blood. Separating locomotion and feeding functions, M. micrura can spend less energy for swimming and use its energy budget more plastically under changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Marine sponges can host a variety of cyanobacterial and bacterial symbionts, but it is often unclear whether these symbionts are generalists that occur in many host species or specialists that occur only in certain species or populations of sponges. The filamentous cyanobacterium Oscillatoria spongeliae is found in the sponges Dysidea n. sp. aff. herbacea 1A and 1B, and similar cyanobacteria are found in D. n. sp. aff. granulosa. We amplified and sequenced sponge nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and cyanobacterial 16S rDNA from specimens of these three sponges. We then used these sequences to construct phylogenies for host sponges and their symbiotic cyanobacteria. Each of these three sponge species hosts a distinct cyanobacterial clade, suggesting a high degree of host specificity and potential coevolution between symbiotic cyanobacteria and their host sponges.  相似文献

We undertook a comprehensive study of Latrunculia in New Zealand to determine the relationship between taxonomic, environmental, and chemical variation within the genus. Sponges were collected from five locations around New Zealand: Three Kings Islands, Tutukaka, Wellington, Kaikoura, and Doubtful Sound. Allozyme electrophoresis at nine polymorphic loci indicated that sponges from each geographic location were genetically distinct, and that they displayed genetic differences of the magnitude usually associated with reproductively isolated species (Nei's D between locations =0.375-2.476). Additionally, the comparisons revealed that the green and brown colour morphs of Latrunculia that are sympatric at Three Kings Islands and Kaikoura are distinct from each other, and that there are two genetic groups within the green sponges in Doubtful Sound. On the basis of genetic data we conclude that there are at least eight species of Latrunculia in New Zealand waters, not one to four as had been previously thought. Morphological comparisons of the eight genetic species based on skeletal characters (i.e. skeletal organisation of the choanosome, spicule composition, size, and geometry) indicated that the eight Latrunculia species fell into only two morphological groups that could be easily diagnosed on the basis of discorhabd type. Within these two primary morphological groups, skeletal characteristics among the eight species largely overlap and are not diagnostic. These findings emphasise the limitations of traditional taxonomic methods based solely on skeletal characters for distinguishing species of Latrunculia. However, multivariate analysis (MANOVA and CDA) based on six measured skeletal variables did reveal significant morphological variation among the species (Pillai's Trace=3.28, F=6.90, P<0.0001), supporting the division of the genus into eight species. Comparisons of chemical extracts from Latrunculia also showed that the amounts of five different bioactive compounds (discorhabdins A, B, C, D, and J) varied predictably among the eight species. This finding suggests that discorhabdin variation within Latrunculia, previously thought to be associated with intra-specific environmental variability, is more likely to reflect differences among species rather than phenotypic plasticity. Our results also highlight the importance of thorough taxonomic studies associated with marine natural products research to understand fully the variation in bioactive properties among individuals. The potential processes underlying the unusually high speciation rates in New Zealand Latrunculia that are indicated in our study are discussed.  相似文献

Morphological characteristics and sinking velocities of naturally occurring fecal pellets of copepods, euphausiids, salps, and pelagic mollusks collected in the northeastern tropical Atlantic were investigated during the period of May-June 1992. The fecal pellets of copepods and euphausiids were cylindrical and distinguished only by their size. Those of salps were, in general, rectangular, and slight differences were noted according to the species. The fecal pellets of the molluscan pteropod Clio sp. were conical, while those of the molluscan heteropod Carinaria sp. were spiral. The sinking velocities ranged from 26.5 to 159.5 m day-1 for copepod fecal pellets, from 16.1 to 341.1 m day-1 for euphausiid pellets, from 43.5 to 1167.6 m day-1 for salps' pellets (Cyclosalpa affinis, Salpa fusiformis, Iasis zonaria, and two unidentified species), from 65 to 205.7 m day-1 for Clio sp. pellets, and from 120.3 to 646.4 m day-1 for Carinaria sp. fecal pellets. The measured sinking velocities were compared with estimates predicted using the equations of Komar et al. (1981; Limnol Oceanogr 26:172-180), Stokes' law, and Newton's second law, using either a constant density of fecal pellets (1.22 g cm-3) or densities estimated with the three different equations. When a constant density was used, the three equations overestimated the sinking velocities; Stokes' law resulted in the largest overestimation, and Newton's second law, the smallest. At the taxa level, the overestimation was greatest for euphausiid 1 fecal pellets and smallest for copepod fecal pellets. When the three equations were used to estimate fecal pellet density, the density estimated using the equation of Komar et al. was the greatest, and that using Stokes' law, the smallest, resulting in over- and underestimation of sinking velocities, respectively. Newton's second law resulted in an intermediate density and gave the closest estimate of sinking velocities. We propose that measurement of sinking velocities of a portion of the fecal pellets might guide in choosing an appropriate equation to be used for a reasonable interpretation of vertical mass flux.  相似文献

The common Antarctic nudibranch Austrodoris kerguelenensis (Bergh) contains diterpene diacylglycerides only present in its external body parts. These compounds provide a chemical defense against sympatric predators, such as the seastar Odontaster validus Koehler. Bioassays conducted with O. validus revealed that live nudibranchs, mantle tissue and Et2O extract of the A. kerguelenensis mantle deterred feeding by the seastar. Further bioassays testing organic fractions of the Et2O mantle extract showed that the diterpene diacylglycerides, as well as corresponding monoacylglycerides and monoacylglycerides of regular fatty acids, were responsible for the feeding deterrence in O. validus. We suggest that A. kerguelenensis derives the bioactive diacylglycerides by de novo biosynthesis rather than by sequestration from its sponge diet, since the mollusk does not contain active metabolites in the viscera, and neither the active compounds nor precursors were detected in the sponge diet. Furthermore, A. kerguelenensis did not show a strong chemodetection or feeding preference for its main diet, hexactinellid sponges, in Y-maze and food choice experiments, respectively.  相似文献

The availability of different forms of nitrogen in coastal and estuarine waters may be important in determining the abundance and productivity of different phytoplankton species. Although urea has been shown to contribute as much as 50% of the nitrogen for phytoplankton nutrition, relatively little is known of the activity and expression of urease in phytoplankton. Using an in vitro enzyme assay, urease activities were examined in laboratory cultures of three species: Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth, Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller, and Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell et Hasle. Cultures of P. minimum and T. weissflogii were grown on three nitrogen sources (NO3m, NH4+, and urea), while A. anophagefferens was grown only on NO3m and urea. Urease was found to be constitutive in all cultures, but activity varied with growth rate and assay temperature for the different cultures. For A. anophagefferens, urease activity varied positively with growth rate regardless of the N source, while for P. minimum, urease activity varied positively with growth rate only for cultures grown on urea and NH4+. In contrast, for T. weissflogii, activity did not vary with growth rate for any of the N sources. For all species, urease activity increased with assay temperature, but with different apparent temperature optima. For A. anophagefferens, in vitro activity increased from near 0-30°C, and remained stable to 50°C, while for P. minimum, increased in vitro activity was noted from near 0-20°C, but constant activity was observed between 20°C and 50°C. For T. weissfloggii, while activity also increased from 0°C to 20°C, subsequent decreases were noted when temperature was elevated above 20°C. Urease activity had a half-saturation constant of 120-165 wg atom N lу in all three species. On both an hourly and daily basis, urease activity in A. anophagefferens exceeded nitrogen demand for growth. In P. minimum, urease activity on an hourly basis matched the nitrogen demand, but was less than the demand on a daily basis. For T. weissflogii, urease activity was always less than the nitrogen demand. These patterns in urease activity in three different species demonstrate that while apparently constitutive, the regulation of activity was substantially different in the diatom. These differences in the physiological regulation of urease activity, as well as other enzymes, may play a role in their ecological success in different environments.  相似文献

The population biology of Donax hanleyanus (Philippi, 1845) (Bivalvia: Donacidae) was studied by monthly sampling from June 1998 through June 2000, at Restinga da Marambaia Beach, Brazil. Two transects were established and divided into ten strata parallel to the waterline, and five replicates were taken with a 0.04 m2 sampler in each stratum. The highest densities of D. hanleyanus were recorded in winter (September 1998, July 1999) and autumn (April 2000). A stratified distribution was observed: recruits were found mainly in the middle swash zone, while juveniles and adults occurred across the tidal gradient up to the retention zone. Mortality rates did not differ significantly between years. Annual production (in ash-free dry mass) ranged from 0.76 g AFDM m-2 year-1 (1998) to 3.67 g AFDM m-2 year-1 (1999), while the production-to-biomass (P/B) ratio varied from 1.45 to 1.59. Life span was ca. 17 months. Of all variables tested, only two, one biological and one physical, seem to have influenced the population dynamics of this species. A significant negative correlation between the densities of the suspension-feeders D. hanleyanus and Emerita brasiliensis (Crustacea: Decapoda) indicated possible intraguild competition, and there was a significant exponential correlation between beach slope and the mean across-shore position of D. hanleyanus. Data compiled from literature suggests a latitudinal gradient in population parameters, with mortality and renewal rate (P/B) of different species of Donax increasing and life span decreasing from temperate to tropical regions. Other factors influencing population dynamics, such as food availability, and the contributions of individual and community biomass to energy and nutrient cycling are also discussed.  相似文献

A periodical survey of the growth of an intertidal encrusting sponge Halichondria okadai was conducted on a rocky intertidal shore on the Izu Peninsula, southern Japan. The area covered by each of 16 marked sponges was monitored, and the fusion and fission of specimens were recorded from June 1995 to June 1998. During the investigation, 15 of the original specimens managed to survive accompanying fusions or fissions and only one colony completely disappeared. Ten fusions and 23 fissions were observed in total. The maximum death rate during a semilunar period was 16.7% and cumulative mortality throughout the study period was 46.1%, indicating that the mortality of H. okadai is lower than that of other species previously reported. There was no particular seasonal pattern in the occurrences of fusion, fission and death of sponges. However, fissions were frequently observed in the latter half of the study period and were sometimes followed by fusions or death of specimens. Positive growth rates were often observed during warmer months, and specimens showed little growth or regression in winter. Seasonal patterns in surface area were thought to be related to seasonality in reproductive activity.  相似文献

A haemolymph colour index is developed in an attempt to improve the resolution of serum protein data in the characterisation of temporal and spatial changes in the condition and growth of a wild population of Jasus edwardsii. The index can be used as an indicator of nutritional condition if combined with conventional moult staging techniques. Lobsters and haemolymph samples were collected from two high- and two low-growth sites over two fishing seasons. Haemolymph samples were analysed for serum protein and astaxanthin level and categorised according to colour, that is, "pigment stage" (PS). Moult stage data were collected and abdominal and hepatopancreatic tissue analysed for percent dry weight. Haemolymph colour changes from light blue-grey, through beige, to deep orange during the moult cycle. These changes were explained with reference to the major pigment, astaxanthin, which increased from 0.135 mg/l (ǂ.054, n=38) at PS 1 (early intermoult) to 2.670 mg/l (ǂ.599, n=12) at PS 4.5 (late premoult). There were significant increases in percent abdominal and hepatopancreatic dry tissue weight over the moult cycle (Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric ANOVA, P<0.05), especially during intermoult. Serum protein levels increased concomitantly and were significantly correlated with percent dry weight of both tissues (abdomen: r2=0.78, n=871, P<0.001; hepatopancreas: r2=0.64, n=864, P<0.001) There were also significant differences between sites in both PS-specific serum protein and percent dry tissue. Lobster condition differed significantly between sites, probably as a result of temperature-mediated effects on growth rate. The addition of haemolymph pigment to the serum protein index allows the differentiation of lobsters at the beginning, middle and end of intermoult.  相似文献

Sponges are sessile filter feeders that are exposed to toxic compounds/xenobiotics and a huge number of diverse pro- and eukaryotic organisms occurring in the aqueous milieu. To cope with these threats, sponges have developed a variety of chemical and immunological defense systems. Among them are potent secondary metabolites or toxins. The demosponge Suberites domuncula contains the bioactive compound okadaic acid; concentrations of ᅢ ng/g (ᅬ nM) of wet tissue have been quantified by LC/MS. In the present study, we sought to determine whether okadaic acid is beneficial for this sponge. Antibodies were raised against okadaic acid and used to localize this compound in situ. It could be demonstrated that the polyclonal antibodies/antiserum stained the sponge cells (endopinacocytes) which form the epithelium of the lacunae and the water channels. They also reacted with bacteria present in sponge tissue. Okadaic acid was found to augment the immune response of S. domuncula against the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS). If primmorphs, a special form of 3-D aggregates, are incubated with LPS at a concentration of 3 µg/ml, a reduction in the incorporation rate of [3H] phenylalanine is measured. In the presence of okadaic acid, this effect is measured already at a concentration of 1 µg/ml, suggesting that okadaic acid sensitizes this (immune) response. Okadaic acid is a known inhibitor of protein phosphatases which, as shown here, cause an increased phosphorylation of p38, a central kinase of the MAP kinase pathway; this may explain the sensitive response of the sponge cells to LPS. At higher concentrations, okadaic acid induces apoptosis, as was demonstrated here by a differential expression of the Bcl-2 homolog and the caspase gene. Seagrass distribution was recorded by snorkel dives on a grid of stations in the waterfront of Club Méditerranée at Mon Choisy-Trou Aux Biches lagoon (NW Mauritius) and subsequently mapped using SURFER 6 computer software. Above-ground (AG) and below-ground (BG) standing biomass in terms of dry weight (DW) and ash-free dry weight (AFDW) as well as shoot density and shoot length were monitored monthly from June1997 to May1998 in a mixed stand of Halodule uninervis and Syringodium isoetifolium (dominant) at a shallow, nearshore station in the lagoon. Measurements of physical and chemical parameters [water temperature, current speed, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate and phosphate concentrations] were made simultaneously, as well as at a reference station (ORE) outside the coral reef. The bottom sediment was analysed for grain size and type composition. Variation patterns were examined and statistical correlations drawn to relate plant performance to the environmental variables measured. The SURFER 6 programme generated a satisfactory contour map of seagrass distribution in the lagoon with a cover range of 0-60%. The densest patches occurred adjacent to the shoreline experiencing weaker water currents (3-13 cm s-1) rather than near the reef (5-35 cm s-1), where seagrasses were absent. Sand (0.063-2 mm grain size) constituted 97.2% and 77.6% of the nearshore and near-reef sediment, respectively. The dominant grain types were derived from corals (about 80%) and mollusc shells (about 14%). The recorded range of total standing biomass for H. uninervis was 243.1-468.2 g DW m-2 (326.9ᇛ.7 g) or 71.7-141.2 g AFDW m-2 (96.8ᆨ.1 g) and for S. isoetifolium it was 271.7-758 g DW m-2 (460.4끯.1 g) or 119-220.5 g AFDW m-2 (155.1ᆮ.5 g), with a maximum biomass increase during September-December in both species. AG:BG biomass ratios were generally <1 and approximated 1 during the warmest months of December-February only. Mean shoot density (1,077-4,364 shoots m-2 in the overall range of 998-4,428 shoots m-2) and mean shoot length (10.9-20.8 cm in the overall range of 7-31 cm) in S. isoetifolium were higher than in H. uninervis (1,732-4,137 shoots m-2 in the overall range of 1,522-4,327 shoots m-2 and 7.9-13.7 cm in the overall range of 6-20 cm, respectively). Temperature showed strong positive correlations with total AFDW biomass of both species (r=0.755, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.679, P<0.02 for S. isoetifolium) and with DO (r=0.925, P<0.01). High DO levels (10.7-11.2 mg l-1) coincided with optimum standing biomass at 27.2°C. Correlations were also strong with shoot density (r=0.881, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.952, P<0.01 for S. isoetifolium) and shoot length (r=0.752, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.797, P<0.01 for S. isoetifolium). Under optimal environmental conditions, nutrient inputs from surface run-off or underground freshwater seepage in the lagoon due to heavy rainfall may boost up seagrass biomass, as suggested by positive significant correlations between phosphate levels and AG AFDW biomass (r=0.63, P<0.05 for H. uninervis; r=0.65, P<0.05 for S. isoetifolium) and shoot density (r=0.6, P<0.05 for H. uninervis; r=0.687, P<0.02 for S. isoetifolium). The results generated in this study suggest local seagrass standing biomass is comparable to that reported in monospecific stands from elsewhere. Anthropogenic activities increasingly draw down the resilience of the seagrass beds around Mauritius, and preventative measures are indispensable to achieve coastal ecological stability.  相似文献

Pigment contents, proteins and net photosynthesis were investigated in fully developed leaf of 1-year-old seedlings of six mangroves (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Rhizophora apiculata) and mangrove associates (Caesalpinia bonduc, Cerbera manghas, Derris heterophylla, Thespesia populnea), collected from Bhitarkanika, located on the east coast of India. Large variations in the photosynthetic rates (PN) among the six species were observed, ranging from 10.16 µmol CO2 m-2 s-1 in C. bonduc to 15.28 µmol CO2 m-2 s-1 in R. apiculata. The total leaf protein content ranged from 12.09 mg g-1 dry wt in T. populnea to 51.89 mg g-1 dry wt in B. gymnorrhiza. The chlorophyll a/b ratio was typically about 3.0 in all the studied species, except C. bonduc (2.8). Photosynthetic rates and chl a/b ratio in the leaves were found to be correlated. Analysis of chlorophyll and xanthophyll spectra suggested: (1) variations in different forms and amounts of carotenes as well as xanthophylls and (2) the presence of high amounts of near-UV-absorbing substances in leaves, particularly in the two mangroves (B. gymnorrhiza, R. apiculata) and a mangrove associate (T. populnea), which appears to be an adaptive feature. Estimation of the chl a/b ratios in isolated thylakoids yielded a low value of 1.8 for R. apiculata and >2.6 for other species. The total protein/chlorophyll ratios in thylakoids varied considerably from 3.14 (D. heterophylla) to 10.88 (T. populnea) among the mangrove associates and from 16.09 to 18.88 between the members of the Rhizophoraceae. The chlorophyll/carotenoid ratios in thylakoids of the six species were more or less similar. The absorption spectra for washed thylakoids of C. manghas and D. heterophylla exhibited absorption characteristics typical for C3-plant thylakoids. However, thylakoids isolated from R. apiculata, B. gymnorrhiza, C. bonduc and T. populnea exhibited an unusual increase in absorption in the blue region (380-410 nm) of the absorption spectrum. The presence of high-absorbing (in the short-wavelength, near-UV region) pigments appears to be closely associated with the thylakoids in R. apiculata and T. populnea. Our results, therefore, suggest a wide range of variation, not only in protein and pigment contents of photosynthetic tissues, but also in the spectral characteristics and composition of the pigments in mangrove species. An understanding of the nature of these pigments in mangroves and their associates, under their natural conditions and especially in relation to eco-physiological adaptations, is necessary, not only in relation to conservation, but also to allow propagation under different salinity conditions.  相似文献
