Nine post-nesting loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) were tracked using sonic and radio telemetry. Tracking began immediately after the turtles left the beach and continued until contact was either lost or terminated. As sonic tags transmit continuously underwater, they were much more effective than the radio tags in determining the paths of the turtles. Radio tags transmit only at the surface and were useful in ascertaining submergence durations. For nine of the ten turtles tracked with sonic signals, the gross movement was away from the beach in a westerly direction. The tracking periods ranged from 3.35 to 8.25 h, while the straight-line movements ranged from 3.05 to 12.88 km, respectively. Sixty-seven percent of the submergence durations recorded were <3 min. This respiratory behavior suggests continuous swimming, and the paths of the turtles suggested directed movement offshore immediately after nesting. The gradual littoral slope and lack of nearshore structure in this part of the Gulf of Mexico could be contributing factors to the patterns of dispersal observed, as benthic structures provide resting and foraging habitat for loggerheads.  相似文献

Demersal fish cannot readily be tracked using satellite-based or light-based geolocation techniques. As an alternative, we describe the tidal location method, which uses tidal data recorded by electronic data storage tags (DSTs), to determine geoposition. Times of high water (H) and tidal ranges (R) recorded by DSTs moored at known locations, and from free-swimming tagged plaice, Pleuronectes platessa, were compared with a North Sea tidal database to identify all positions with matching values of H and R. Within the recording precision of the tag (ǂ.2 m, ᆞ min) and the predicted accuracy of the model generated tidal data (ǂ.15 m, ᆨ min), geolocations over much of the North Sea and eastern English Channel were predicted to be accurate to within 40 km, sometimes to within 10 km. Positional estimates of the moored tags were within 15.7Dž.5 km of the actual locations. Geolocations made from tagged plaice within 5 days of release and 5 days pre-recapture were within 35ᆬ km and 37ᆫ km of release and recapture positions respectively. Our results demonstrate the ability of this method to accurately describe the migrations of North Sea plaice throughout their geographical range with a level of accuracy unattainable using light-based geolocation. The method could equally be applied to any shelf-dwelling demersal fish that periodically rests on the sea-bed for the duration of a tidal cycle. In fisheries management, the method has clear potential application in defining the movements and migrations of other commercial species.  相似文献

Patterns of genetic diversity of the marine deep-water redfish, Sebastes mentella Travin, from 21 sampling locations (n=46 per sample, from 1995 to 1998) were examined throughout its range in the North Atlantic. Eight microsatellite loci were used in order to: (1) define the genetic structure and consider the possible influence of dispersal, geographic distance, oceanic currents and historical factors; and (2) relate the structure to present management units and practices. Three divergent population units (mean Š=0.012) associated with distinct geographic areas were defined: Eastern (Norway and Barents Sea), Panoceanic and Western (Gulf of St. Lawrence and offshore Newfoundland). The most important observation was the lack of genetic differences (mean Š=-0.0004) and lack of genetic isolation by geographic distance (r=0.318, P=0.112) among samples within the Panoceanic zone, from the Faroe Islands to the Grand Banks (6,000 km). A combination of vicariance, historical introgression with a closely related species, S. fasciatus, and contemporary patterns of oceanic circulation are likely to have shaped the observed population structure. These results only partially support current management units, and call for more integrated practices for regulating the exploitation of S. mentella throughout its extensive range.  相似文献

Time-depth recorders were attached to immature hawksbills (Eretmochelys imbricata Linnaeus, 1766) residing at the northwestern cliffs of Mona Island, Puerto Rico. Data on diving profiles obtained from four turtles of 32.0 to 53.4 cm straight carapace length revealed strong similarities in behavioral patterns. During daylight hours, turtles were active an average 8.4 h per day, surfacing 3.6% of the time. Length of foraging dives correlated with turtle size, with mean durations ranging from 8.6 to 14.0 min. Foraging dives, with a mean depth of 4.7 m, were associated with feeding on encrusting sponges. At night, turtles were mostly inactive, surfacing 1.8% of the time and with individual mean submergence intervals of between 30.4 and 37.1 min. From the surfacing behavior of turtles making deep and long dives, it is inferred that dives were aerobic, with the turtles making use of oxygen stores in addition to that of the lung.  相似文献

During 1955–2003, flipper tags were attached to 46,983 green turtles and ten turtles were fitted with satellite transmitters at Tortuguero, Costa Rica. Eight satellite-tracked turtles stayed within 135 km of the beach and probably returned to nest after release. The internesting area is more extensive than previously documented. Post-nesting migration routes of satellite-tracked turtles varied. Seven turtles swam close to the coast and three turtles swam through oceanic waters before moving toward nearshore areas. Sea surface height anomaly maps indicate that oceanic movements were consistent with the southwestern Caribbean gyre. Circling and semi-circling turtles could have been disoriented but submergence and surface times suggest they may have been feeding in Sargassum sp. concentrations. Rapid post-nesting migrations (mean 2.2 km hr−1) ended on benthic feeding grounds in shallow waters (<20 m) off Belize (n=1), Honduras (n=1) and Nicaragua (n=8). The spatial distribution of migration end points (n=10) and tag returns (n=4,669) are similar. Fishermen in Nicaragua target green turtles along migratory corridors and on foraging grounds. Management efforts are urgently needed in Nicaragua, particularly in the high-density feeding areas south and east of the Witties (N14°09 W82°45). The proximity of foraging grounds to the nesting beach (mean 512 km) may permit female turtles to invest more energy in reproduction and hence the Tortuguero population may have greater potential for recovery than other green turtle nesting populations. Recovery of the Tortuguero green turtle population will benefit countries and marine ecosystems throughout the Caribbean, especially Nicaragua.  相似文献

We collected data on plasma levels of testosterone+5a-dihydrotestosterone (T+DHT) and corticosterone (CORT) from adult female green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) from southern Queensland during distinct stages of their reproductive cycle. Those females capable of breeding in a given year had elevated plasma steroid levels (T+DHT 0.91ǂ.08; CORT 1.05ǂ.29 ng/ml), associated with follicular development, until courtship began in October. At the beginning of the nesting season in November plasma levels of CORT were related to when the female first nested (r2=0.06; F=10.45; P=0.01). However, they were not correlated with the number of clutches a female laid in that season (F=3.65; P=0.08). We repeatedly sampled 23 turtles over the nesting season and profiled changes in steroids immediately following oviposition of each clutch. Levels of T+DHT (range 0.41-0.58 ng/ml) and CORT (range 2.13-2.81 ng/ml) were similar through the early stages of the nesting season and inter-nesting period, and declined to near basal levels (T+DHT 0.37ǂ.03 and CORT 1.85-ng/ml) following the last clutch for the season. Steroid hormone levels were also low (T+DHT 0.38ǂ.16; CORT 0.46ǂ.21 ng/ml) in four independent post-breeding (atretic) females; samples for these females were taken at a time when body condition was presumably at the lowest for the season. Subtle changes in the nesting environment, such as variation in nesting habitat or the time of night that nesting occurred, were associated with a small and slow CORT increase. We suggest CORT is increased in nesting females to assist in lipid transfer to prepare the ovarian follicles and/or the reproductive organs for ovulation.  相似文献

Acute and chronic upper and lower thermal limits and freeze resistance were investigated in the nonindigenous brown mussel, Perna perna, from the Texas Gulf of Mexico coast in order to assess its potential distribution in North American coastal waters. This species' long-term, incipient lower and upper thermal limits were 7.5°C and 30°C, congruent with the seasonal ambient water temperature range of 10-30°C reported for other populations worldwide. Effects of temperature acclimation and individual size on survival time were most pronounced on chronic exposures to lethal temperatures approaching incipient lower or upper thermal limits. When exposed to temperature increasing at 0.1°C min-1, the acute upper lethal limit was 44°C regardless of acclimation temperature or individual size. P. perna had a limited freeze resistance, being intolerant of emersion at -2.5°C. This species' narrow incipient thermal limits, limited capacity for temperature acclimation and poor freeze resistance may account for its restriction to subtidal and lower eulittoral zones of cooler subtropical rocky shores. Near extinction of P. perna from Texas Gulf of Mexico waters occurred in the summer of 1997 when mean surface-water temperatures approached its incipient upper limit of 30°C.  相似文献

The Hawaiian stingray, Dasyatis lata, is a common benthic elasmobranch in nearshore Hawaiian waters. Acoustic telemetry was used to track the movements of seven rays in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii. Rays were tracked continuously over 31-74 h periods. Geographical movements were analyzed to determine space utilization and rate of movement. Rays were found to utilize significantly larger activity spaces at night (0.83ǂ.70 km2) (mean-SD) than during the day (0.12ǂ.15 km2). Mean total activity space for rays tracked was 1.32ǂ.75 km2. Rates of movement were also significantly higher at night (0.34ǂ.30 km h-1) than during the day (0.15ǂ.22 km h-1). Average straight-line swimming speed was 0.64ǂ.16 km h-1, with a maximum observed swimming speed of 1.9 km h-1. Tidal stage had no effect on rate of movement. Comparison with previously published data on juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks, Sphyrna lewini, in Kaneohe Bay revealed a high degree of overlap in habitat use and time of activity, suggesting possible ecological interactions between these two species.  相似文献

The availability of different forms of nitrogen in coastal and estuarine waters may be important in determining the abundance and productivity of different phytoplankton species. Although urea has been shown to contribute as much as 50% of the nitrogen for phytoplankton nutrition, relatively little is known of the activity and expression of urease in phytoplankton. Using an in vitro enzyme assay, urease activities were examined in laboratory cultures of three species: Aureococcus anophagefferens Hargraves et Sieburth, Prorocentrum minimum (Pavillard) Schiller, and Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grunow) Fryxell et Hasle. Cultures of P. minimum and T. weissflogii were grown on three nitrogen sources (NO3m, NH4+, and urea), while A. anophagefferens was grown only on NO3m and urea. Urease was found to be constitutive in all cultures, but activity varied with growth rate and assay temperature for the different cultures. For A. anophagefferens, urease activity varied positively with growth rate regardless of the N source, while for P. minimum, urease activity varied positively with growth rate only for cultures grown on urea and NH4+. In contrast, for T. weissflogii, activity did not vary with growth rate for any of the N sources. For all species, urease activity increased with assay temperature, but with different apparent temperature optima. For A. anophagefferens, in vitro activity increased from near 0-30°C, and remained stable to 50°C, while for P. minimum, increased in vitro activity was noted from near 0-20°C, but constant activity was observed between 20°C and 50°C. For T. weissfloggii, while activity also increased from 0°C to 20°C, subsequent decreases were noted when temperature was elevated above 20°C. Urease activity had a half-saturation constant of 120-165 wg atom N lу in all three species. On both an hourly and daily basis, urease activity in A. anophagefferens exceeded nitrogen demand for growth. In P. minimum, urease activity on an hourly basis matched the nitrogen demand, but was less than the demand on a daily basis. For T. weissflogii, urease activity was always less than the nitrogen demand. These patterns in urease activity in three different species demonstrate that while apparently constitutive, the regulation of activity was substantially different in the diatom. These differences in the physiological regulation of urease activity, as well as other enzymes, may play a role in their ecological success in different environments.  相似文献

Neonate sea turtles disperse from nesting beaches into the open ocean and develop during a multi-year growth period at sea, but data that characterize their behavior, feeding, and habitat during this developmental period have been few. Limited information has suggested that neonate sea turtles associate with lines of floating debris and biota at areas of surface downwelling. Data from the present study come from measurements of habitat, turtle behavior, and apparent foraging preferences in areas where neonate (post-hatchling) loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) were observed and captured. Turtles were observed (n=293) and captured (n=241 of the 293 observed) in downwelling lines that had formed in the slope water near the Gulf Stream front off east-central Florida, USA. Catch-per-unit-effort averaged 12.4 turtles/h from a vessel moving at 2.5 knots. Turtles were largely inactive and were closely associated with floating material, especially pelagic species of Sargassum. Turtles captured along with samples of floating material and given a gastric-esophageal lavage showed a preference for animal material (35.5% of volume in habitat, 70.9% in lavage) over plant material (60.3% of volume in habitat, 22.5% in lavage). Ingested anthropogenic debris included tar (20% of turtles) and plastics (15% of turtles). Ingested animals were principally small (most <1 mm) and were typically slow-moving or non-motile species or stages. Ingested plants were most commonly Sargassum fragments or seagrasses that bore epiphytic animals. Preferred or commonly ingested animals were hydroids, copepods, and pleuston such as Janthina, Creseis, Porpita, and Halobates. Data support a hypothesis describing post-hatchling loggerheads as facultatively active but principally low-energy float-and-wait foragers both within and outside of downwelling lines. Pelagic dispersal of turtles may be best predicted by a "smart" drifter analogy wherein turtle buoyancy, surface advection, and minimal oriented movement determine their distribution at sea. Conservation implications of plastic and tar ingestion are discussed.  相似文献

A new mandibular sensor is presented here based on the use of a Hall sensor, attached to one mandible, opposite a magnet, attached to the other mandible. Changes in sensor voltage, proportional to magnetic field strength, and thus inter-mandibular angle, are recorded in a logger. This system was tested on seven captive Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) and three gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) during: (1) feeding trials on land, where birds were given known quantities and types of food; and (2) trials in water where birds were allowed to swim and dive freely. In addition, six free-living Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) were equipped with the system for single foraging trips. Angular signatures were looked for in instances when both captive and free-living birds might open their beaks, and it was discovered that five major behaviours could be identified: ingestion, breathing, calling, head shaking and preening. Captive feeding trials showed that prey mass could be determined with reasonable accuracy (r2=0.92), and there was some indication that prey type could be resolved if recording frequency were high enough. Vocalisations in Adélie penguins (arc calls) took <0.7 s for mean maximum beak angles of 4.2° (SD 1.3), and were distinguished by their relatively gradual change in beak angle and by their high degree of symmetry. Beak shakings were distinguishable by their short duration (multiple peaks of <0.5 s) and minimal maximum angle (<0.5°). Preening behaviour was apparent due to multiple decreasing peaks (angles <8°). Breathing could be subdivided into that during porpoising, where a characteristic double peak in beak angle was recorded, and that during normal surface rests between dives. During porpoising, only the primary peak (mean maximum beak angle 25.1°, SD 4.7) occurred when the bird was out of the water (mean maximum for second peak 5.9°, SD 4.1). During normal surface rests in free-living birds, breaths could be distinguished as a series of beak openings and closures, showing variation in amplitude and frequency according to an apparent recovery from the previous dive and preparation for the subsequent dive to come. The mandibular measuring system presented shows considerable promise for elucidating many hitherto intractable aspects of the behaviour of free-living animals.  相似文献

In April-May 1998, mass coral bleaching was observed in the lagoon of Rangiroa Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia. Six months later, the extent of bleaching-induced coral mortality was assessed at three sites. Corals in the fast-growing genus Pocillopora had experienced >99% mortality. Many large colonies of the slow-growing genus Porites (mean horizontal cross-sectional area 5.8 m2) had also died - a phenomenon not previously observed in French Polynesia and virtually unprecedented world-wide. At one site, 25% of colonies, or 44% of the pre-bleaching cover of living Porites, experienced whole-colony mortality. At the two other sites, recently dead Porites accounted for 41% and 82% of the pre-bleaching live cover. Mortality in Porites was negatively correlated with depth between 1.5 and 5 m. Using a 50-year dataset of mean monthly sea surface temperature (SST), derived from ship- and satellite-borne instruments, we show that bleaching occurred during a period of exceptionally high summer SST. 1998 was the first year in which mean monthly SSTs exceeded the 1961-1990 upper 95% confidence limit (29.4°C) for a period of three consecutive months. We suggest that the sustained 3-month anomaly in local summer SST was a major cause of coral mortality, but do not discount the synergistic effect of solar radiation. Recovery of the size-frequency distribution of Porites colonies to pre-bleaching levels may take at least 100 years.  相似文献

The movements of four Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta; three females, one male) were tracked via satellite telemetry for between 108 and 457 days. Total length of the routes traveled by the turtles varied between 2554 and 7098 km, and the average travel rate was 1.2 km h-1. Long-distance movement between the western and eastern Mediterranean basins followed a seasonal pattern and seemed to be triggered by temperature and food availability. In the autumn/winter months turtles moved from west to east in search of warmer waters, and returned to the western basin in spring, where food resources are generally more plentiful. Three (two females, one male) of the four turtles migrated eastward through the Straits of Messina, which is characterized by high fishing pressure and intense boat traffic. Information about turtle migration patterns and routes will serve to plan effective conservation strategies.  相似文献

Sixteen satellite-tagged adult male loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) dispersed widely from an aggregation near Port Canaveral, Florida, USA (28°23′N, −80°32′W) after breeding. Northbound males migrated further (990 ± 303 km) than southbound males (577 ± 168 km) and transited more rapidly (median initial dive duration = 6 (IQR = 4–16) versus 19 (IQR = 10–31) min, respectively).. Migration occurred along a depth corridor (20–40 m) except where constricted by a narrow continental shelf width. Males foraged in areas 27 ± 41 km2 day−1 at locations <1–80 km from shore for 100.1 ± 60.6 days, with variability in foraging patterns not explained by turtle size or geography. Post-breeding dispersal patterns were similar to patterns reported for adult female loggerhead sea turtles in this region and adult male loggerhead sea turtles elsewhere in the northern hemisphere; however, foraging ground distributions were most similar to adult female loggerhead sea turtles in this region.  相似文献

Incubation period, hatching success, and emergence percentage in loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nests were quantified during the 1993 and 1995 nesting seasons and following incubation seasons in Minabe, Wakayama, Japan. Sand and nest temperatures were also monitored. Over the seasons, daily mean sand temperature at nest depth fluctuated between 18.0°C and 33.3°C, with a steep increase in the second week of July and a peak in late August. Temperatures inside the nest chambers were a few degrees above those of the surrounding sand at the end of incubation. The incubation period ranged from 46 to 82 days. A significant negative correlation was found between mean sand temperature and incubation period. The relationship conformed to the day-degree concept. There was no significant seasonal trend in hatching success, but many pre-emergent hatchlings were found dead in most of the clutches during the warmest part of the season. Emergence percentage was correlated with mean sand temperature calculated for 4 days before emergence, suggesting that mortality may be due to heat. This heat-related mortality is considered to be a common phenomenon at our study site, because the peak in emergences coincides with the peak in high temperatures. These temperature effects on hatchling mortality must be taken into account in estimates of hatchling sex ratios. Because sand temperatures already exceed the optimal thermal range for incubation, this population is vulnerable to even small temperature increases resulting from global warming.  相似文献

Interannual variability in the mesoscale oceanography of the inferred hatching area of winter-spawned Illex argentinus (i.e. those belonging to the Southern Patagonic Stock) was examined during the hatching months of June and July. The hatching area was defined as the region 32°-39°S, 49°-61° W, and indicators of the surface oceanography in this area were derived from remotely sensed advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) sea-surface temperature (SST) data. Interannual variability in the mesoscale oceanic circulation in the inferred hatching area was examined in terms of (1) the area occupied by "frontal" waters (defined as areas with SST gradients of ́°C over an area of 15 km by 15 km), and (2) the area occupied by waters of "favourable" SST (defined as those with temperatures in the range 16-18°C). Oceanographic indicators were compared with an index of I. argentinus recruitment to the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) fishery (catch per licensed vessel) for the period 1987 to 1999. The two oceanographic indicators were seen to co-vary, with a decrease in the proportion of the inferred hatching area occupied by frontal waters corresponding to an increase in the proportion of water of favourable SST. High squid abundance was found to be associated with a lower proportion of frontal waters or a higher proportion of favourable-SST waters within the inferred hatching area in the year preceding the fishery. Interannual variability in the interaction of the Brazil and Falkland Currents in the inferred hatching area during the early life stages is shown to be important in influencing the population size of I, argentinus, and mechanisms influencing squid recruitment in this highly dynamic region are discussed.  相似文献

Biomass, photosynthesis and growth of the large, perennial brown alga Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. were examined along a depth gradient in a high-arctic fjord, Young Sound, NE Greenland (74°18'N; 20°14'W), in order to evaluate how well the species is adapted to the extreme climatic conditions. The area is covered by up to 1.6-m-thick ice during 10 months of the year, and bottom water temperature is <0°C all year round. L. saccharina occurred from 2.5 m depth to a lower depth limit of about 20 m receiving 0.7% of surface irradiance. Specimen density and biomass were low, likely, because of heavy ice scouring in shallow water and intensive feeding activity from walruses in deeper areas. The largest specimens were >4 m long and older than 4 years. In contrast to temperate stands of L. saccharina, old leaf blades (2-3 years old) remained attached to the new blades. The old tissues maintained their photosynthetic capacity thereby contributing importantly to algal carbon balance. The photosynthetic characteristics of new tissues reflected a high capacity for adaptation to different light regimes. At low light under ice, or in deep water, the chlorophyll a content and photosynthetic efficiency (!) were high, while light compensation (Ec) and saturation (Ek) points were low. An Ec of 2.0 µmol photons m-2 s-1 under ice allowed photosynthesis to almost balance, and sometimes exceed, respiratory costs during the period with thick ice cover but high surface irradiance, from April through July. Rates of respiration were lower than usually found for macroalgae. Annual elongation rates of leaf blades (70-90 cm) were only slightly lower than for temperate L. saccharina, but specific growth rates (0.48-0.58 year-1) were substantially lower, because the old blades remained attached. L. saccharina comprised between 5% and 10% of total macroalgal biomass in the area, and the annual contribution to primary production was only between 0.1 and 1.6 g C m-2 year-1.  相似文献

The population biology of Donax hanleyanus (Philippi, 1845) (Bivalvia: Donacidae) was studied by monthly sampling from June 1998 through June 2000, at Restinga da Marambaia Beach, Brazil. Two transects were established and divided into ten strata parallel to the waterline, and five replicates were taken with a 0.04 m2 sampler in each stratum. The highest densities of D. hanleyanus were recorded in winter (September 1998, July 1999) and autumn (April 2000). A stratified distribution was observed: recruits were found mainly in the middle swash zone, while juveniles and adults occurred across the tidal gradient up to the retention zone. Mortality rates did not differ significantly between years. Annual production (in ash-free dry mass) ranged from 0.76 g AFDM m-2 year-1 (1998) to 3.67 g AFDM m-2 year-1 (1999), while the production-to-biomass (P/B) ratio varied from 1.45 to 1.59. Life span was ca. 17 months. Of all variables tested, only two, one biological and one physical, seem to have influenced the population dynamics of this species. A significant negative correlation between the densities of the suspension-feeders D. hanleyanus and Emerita brasiliensis (Crustacea: Decapoda) indicated possible intraguild competition, and there was a significant exponential correlation between beach slope and the mean across-shore position of D. hanleyanus. Data compiled from literature suggests a latitudinal gradient in population parameters, with mortality and renewal rate (P/B) of different species of Donax increasing and life span decreasing from temperate to tropical regions. Other factors influencing population dynamics, such as food availability, and the contributions of individual and community biomass to energy and nutrient cycling are also discussed.  相似文献

The movements and submergence behaviour of two male green turtles (Chelonia mydas) on their mating grounds at Ascension Island were investigated by satellite telemetry. During the mating season, males tended to conduct much shorter dives (typically <15 min) than those recorded previously for females during the internesting period at this rookery. This suggests that throughout the mating season males maintained relatively high activity levels, presumably associated with locating and mating with as many females as possible to maximise their reproductive output. At the end of their residence at the mating ground, the two males conducted longer dives (48 min and 21 min, respectively), suggesting that they rested before their migration away from the island. Although very few locations were obtained during this migration, those obtained showed that males migrate to South America, as has been shown previously for females from this population.  相似文献

Seagrass distribution was recorded by snorkel dives on a grid of stations in the waterfront of Club Méditerranée at Mon Choisy-Trou Aux Biches lagoon (NW Mauritius) and subsequently mapped using SURFER 6 computer software. Above-ground (AG) and below-ground (BG) standing biomass in terms of dry weight (DW) and ash-free dry weight (AFDW) as well as shoot density and shoot length were monitored monthly from June1997 to May1998 in a mixed stand of Halodule uninervis and Syringodium isoetifolium (dominant) at a shallow, nearshore station in the lagoon. Measurements of physical and chemical parameters [water temperature, current speed, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate and phosphate concentrations] were made simultaneously, as well as at a reference station (ORE) outside the coral reef. The bottom sediment was analysed for grain size and type composition. Variation patterns were examined and statistical correlations drawn to relate plant performance to the environmental variables measured. The SURFER 6 programme generated a satisfactory contour map of seagrass distribution in the lagoon with a cover range of 0-60%. The densest patches occurred adjacent to the shoreline experiencing weaker water currents (3-13 cm s-1) rather than near the reef (5-35 cm s-1), where seagrasses were absent. Sand (0.063-2 mm grain size) constituted 97.2% and 77.6% of the nearshore and near-reef sediment, respectively. The dominant grain types were derived from corals (about 80%) and mollusc shells (about 14%). The recorded range of total standing biomass for H. uninervis was 243.1-468.2 g DW m-2 (326.9ᇛ.7 g) or 71.7-141.2 g AFDW m-2 (96.8ᆨ.1 g) and for S. isoetifolium it was 271.7-758 g DW m-2 (460.4끯.1 g) or 119-220.5 g AFDW m-2 (155.1ᆮ.5 g), with a maximum biomass increase during September-December in both species. AG:BG biomass ratios were generally <1 and approximated 1 during the warmest months of December-February only. Mean shoot density (1,077-4,364 shoots m-2 in the overall range of 998-4,428 shoots m-2) and mean shoot length (10.9-20.8 cm in the overall range of 7-31 cm) in S. isoetifolium were higher than in H. uninervis (1,732-4,137 shoots m-2 in the overall range of 1,522-4,327 shoots m-2 and 7.9-13.7 cm in the overall range of 6-20 cm, respectively). Temperature showed strong positive correlations with total AFDW biomass of both species (r=0.755, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.679, P<0.02 for S. isoetifolium) and with DO (r=0.925, P<0.01). High DO levels (10.7-11.2 mg l-1) coincided with optimum standing biomass at 27.2°C. Correlations were also strong with shoot density (r=0.881, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.952, P<0.01 for S. isoetifolium) and shoot length (r=0.752, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.797, P<0.01 for S. isoetifolium). Under optimal environmental conditions, nutrient inputs from surface run-off or underground freshwater seepage in the lagoon due to heavy rainfall may boost up seagrass biomass, as suggested by positive significant correlations between phosphate levels and AG AFDW biomass (r=0.63, P<0.05 for H. uninervis; r=0.65, P<0.05 for S. isoetifolium) and shoot density (r=0.6, P<0.05 for H. uninervis; r=0.687, P<0.02 for S. isoetifolium). The results generated in this study suggest local seagrass standing biomass is comparable to that reported in monospecific stands from elsewhere. Anthropogenic activities increasingly draw down the resilience of the seagrass beds around Mauritius, and preventative measures are indispensable to achieve coastal ecological stability.  相似文献
