From December to April, the Arctic air mass is polluted by man-made mid-latitudinal emissions from fossil fuel combustion, smelting and industrial processes. In the rest of the year, pollution levels are much lower. This is the outcome of less efficient pollutant removal processes and better south (S) to north (N) transport during winter. In winter, the Arctic air mass covers much of Eurasia and N. America. Meteorological flow fields and the distribution of anthropogenic SO2 emissions in the northern hemisphere favor northern Eurasia as the main source of visibility reducing haze. Observations of SO42− concentrations in the atmosphere throughout the Arctic yield, depending on location and year, a January–April mean of 1.5–3.9 μg m−3 in the Norwegian Arctic to 1.2–2.2 μg m−3 in the N. American Arctic. An estimate of the mean vertical profile of fine particle aerosol mass during March and April shows that, on average, pollution is concentrated in the lower 5 km of the atmosphere. Not only are anthropogenic particles present in the Arctic atmosphere but also gases such as SO2, perfluorocarbons and pesticides. The acidic nature and seasonal variation of Arctic pollution is reflected in precipitation, the snowpack and glacier snow in the Arctic. A pH of 4.9–5.2 in winter and ~ 5.6 in summer is expected in the absence of calcareous wind blown soil. Glacial records indicate that Arctic air pollution has undergone a marked increase since the mid 1950s paralleling a marked increase in SO2 and NOx emissions in Europe. Effects of Arctic pollution include a reduction in visibility and perturbation of the solar radiation budget in April–June. Potential effects are the acidification and toxification of sensitive ecosystems.  相似文献

The paper describes wind tunnel experiments with rectangular blocks in uniform smooth and turbulent air flow to simulate the transport of windborne atmospheric pollutants near buildings. Dispersal is dominated by the flow in the areodynamic wakes of the blocks. Using light extinction apparatus, measurements were made of the time constant (td) of the decay of the amount of smoke in the separation bubble following abrupt removal of the smoke source, and of the bubble length (X). These quantities were expressed as H( Utd/S, where U is the air velocity and S the block dimension) and X/S respectively, found to be unique functions of the free-stream turbulence parameter, A( lfK1/2f/SU, where lf and kf are the length scale and kinetic energy respectively of the free-stream turbulence), for cubic blocks in the ranges lf/S ? 0.6 and kf1/2/U ?, 0.15. Visual observation of tracer smoke indicated the onset of re-attachment of the separated flow on the top and side faces of the cubes at relatively low levels of free-stream turbulence, coinciding with sharply varying behaviour in H and X/S. Measurements were also made of H and X/S for square-faced blocks of various lengthwise aspect ratios, and for cubic blocks at various angles of incidence to the flow.From consideration of the turbulent transport of entities of an atmospheric pollutant across the boundary of the wake bubble behind a building, an expression is derived for the mean concentration level that can build up inside the bubble for a source of known strength and location. It contains the two terms H and X/S which explicitly embody the complicated fluid mechanical properties of the near wake.  相似文献

Urban air pollution is on the rise in many cities of the world. There are associated health impacts that affect urban residents, especially the poor. By doing economic valuation, it is possible to draw the attention of citizens, policy-makers and, of course, researchers to the extent of damage and the value of it. In this paper, such a valuation is done using time-series data for the suburb of Mumbai called Chembur and cross-sectional data for several wards. We value mortality and morbidity from air pollution using the above data. It is shown that the pollution in Mumbai can lead to high health costs. In general the average cost amounts 0.26% of income due to highly subsidised treatment and poverty. However, 5% of patients who suffer severe attacks may pay as much as much as 19% of their income. Workdays lost are of equal importance to health expenditures. Distributional aspects of the damage are such that children and senior citizens are affected most.  相似文献

A long-term study of measurement of concentration of NOx, SO2 and TSP pollutants have been done in a port and harbour region in India. Monthly measurements of gaseous and particulate pollutants were made at six monitoring stations from January 1997 to December 2000. Meteorological data was also simultaneously collected. In this study, the relationship between monitored ambient air quality data and meteorological factors, such as wind speed, temperature, is statistically analysed, using the SPSS package. The monthly mean concentrations of NOx, SO2 and TSP were in the range of 19.5–59.0 μg/m3, 8.6–51.3 μg/m3 and 88.2–199.3 μg/m3, respectively. The results show that TSP is strongly correlated with NOx and SO2 with a correlation coefficient of 0.83 and 0.82, respectively. The correlation coefficients for TSP, NOx, and SO2 with wind are –0.78, –0.78, and –0.88, respectively.  相似文献

This paper provides a broad overview of pollution prevention and management in China and details the specific measures that have been adopted at a national level. The paper begins by exploring some of the key environmental issues faced by China, and the history of environmental management in China. Then the current environmental legislation and standards in China are detailed, and the strategic pollution prevention measures that have been adopted are described. Next, the paper examines the environmental economic instruments and ethos that China appears to have adopted, and concludes by drawing a comparison with the development of pollution prevention in the western world and proposes a broad research agenda.  相似文献

Effects of air pollution on rice yield in the Pakistan Punjab   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7  
A study using open-top chambers ventilated with ambient or charcoal filtered air in the vicinity of Lahore, Pakistan demonstrated reductions of 42% and 37% in the grain yield of two cultivars of rice (Oryza sativa L.). This yield reduction was primarily due to the reduction in mean panicle number per plant, although significant effects of filtration on 1000 grain weight and the number of filled grains per panicle were also detected. The 6-h daily mean O(3) concentrations were only 10-20 nl litre(-1) during the monsoon season, but increased to 30-55 nl litre(-1) later in the growing season, while the mean NO(2) concentration during the experiment was 12 nl litre(-1). On the basis of experience in North America and Japan, the reductions in yield in the present study are substantially greater than might be predicted. The reasons for this discrepancy are discussed, together with the implications for effects on rice yield in other regions of south and south-east Asia.  相似文献

Hydrogen (δ2H), carbon (δ13C), oxygen (δ18O) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes of tree rings growing in field conditions can be indicative of past pollution effects. The characteristic δ13C trend is a positive shift generally explained by invoking closure of stomata, but experimental studies suggest that increased rates of carboxylation could also generate such trends. In many cases the δ18O and δ2H values decrease in trees exposed to pollution and exhibit inverse coinciding long-term trends with δ13C values. However, some trees exposed to diffuse pollution and experimental conditions can show an increase or no δ18O change even if δ13C values increase. These diverse responses depend on how stress conditions modify physiological functions such as stomatal conductance, carboxylation, respiration, and perhaps water assimilation by the root system. Recent studies suggest that δ15N changes in trees can be caused by soil acidification and accumulation of anthropogenic emissions with isotopic signals deviating from natural N.  相似文献

During the last decade, there has been worldwide concern with global climate change, which has been induced by greenhouse gases (GHGs) due to the use of fossil fuels. The CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion have been identified as the single most significant source of GHG emissions into the atmosphere. Realising the need to control and regulate emissions of pollutants, the objective of the present study estimates the trend of CO2, SO2 and NOx between the periods 1991-92 and 1996-97. An input-output structural decomposition analysis approach is used to determine their sources of change. It also provides a set of alternative scenarios for the year 2001-2 and 2006-7. The sources of changes in the amount of CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions are categorised into four factors: the ecoefficiency, the structure of production, the structure of demand, and the volume of demand. Results indicate that the electricity sector contributes more towards direct, as well as indirect, emission coefficients. The petroleum product sector also contributes more in this respect. The dominant role is played by the structure of demand and the volume of demand.  相似文献

EC Directive 2008/50/CE on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe specifies the obligations of Member States regarding fixed measurements of atmospheric pollutants in areas where maximum concentration levels exceed the lower assessment threshold. However, indications as to the siting of atmospheric monitoring stations are less precise and sometimes confusing. Campaigns to measure benzene and other volatile organic compounds in Murcia in 2007 and 2008 revealed that the areas where measurements coincided with the mean concentration for the whole city were always practically the same. Consequently, we propose a method for siting atmospheric monitoring stations in cities for which emission sources remain steady throughout the year, as is the case for cities in most southern European countries, where the most important emission source is traffic. The method is particularly useful for towns in which only one fixed measuring point is compulsory and should help local authorities in making correct decisions in this context.  相似文献

On weekends in Los Angeles County the average atmospheric concentrations of the primary reactants, NO and reactive hydrocarbons, leading to photochemical air pollution decrease. The behavior of oxidant concentration (used as a measure of the products of the photochemical reactions) usually does not follow that of the primary pollutants. In fact, we find that for most of the year the average weekend oxidant concentration is higher than the corresponding weekday value, despite the lowered emissions. However, for areas and times of particularly high oxidant concentration, for example at inland stations during the summer months, the oxidant levels do decrease on weekends. Thus care must be taken when designing short-term oxidant control strategies, as indiscriminant application of short-term traffic decreases to random days could be counterproductive. Such strategies, however, might be useful for days and places of particularly high oxidant concentration and further research to delineate the requisite conditions for the success of such strategies is in process.  相似文献

The noncooperative air pollution reduction model (NCRM) that is currently adopted in China to manage air pollution reduction of each individual province has inherent drawbacks. In this paper, we propose a cooperative air pollution reduction game model (CRM) that consists of two parts: (1) an optimization model that calculates the optimal pollution reduction quantity for each participating province to meet the joint pollution reduction goal; and (2) a model that distribute the economic benefit of the cooperation (i.e., pollution reduction cost saving) among the provinces in the cooperation based on the Shapley value method. We applied the CRM to the case of SO2 reduction in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region in China. The results, based on the data from 2003–2009, show that cooperation helps lower the overall SO2 pollution reduction cost from 4.58% to 11.29%. Distributed across the participating provinces, such a cost saving from interprovincial cooperation brings significant benefits to each local government and stimulates them for further cooperation in pollution reduction. Finally, sensitivity analysis is performed using the year 2009 data to test the parameters’ effects on the pollution reduction cost savings.

Implications: China is increasingly facing unprecedented pressure for immediate air pollution control. The current air pollution reduction policy does not allow cooperation and is less efficient. In this paper we developed a cooperative air pollution reduction game model that consists of two parts: (1) an optimization model that calculates the optimal pollution reduction quantity for each participating province to meet the joint pollution reduction goal; and (2) a model that distributes the cooperation gains (i.e., cost reduction) among the provinces in the cooperation based on the Shapley value method. The empirical case shows that such a model can help improve efficiency in air pollution reduction. The result of the model can serve as a reference for Chinese government pollution reduction policy design.  相似文献
