The environmental problems that have arisen from the use of persistent pesticides in the past, and potential sources of further contamination have been discussed. The potential and limitations of phytoremediation for removal of pesticides in the environment have been reviewed. The subject that was suggested for this speech was "Where have we been in environmental control and where are we going?" Since 1969 I have been involved in environmental programs—water, air, and land use. I must say that if I had been able to look ahead four years ago to where we would be today I think that I would have been completely shocked. I don’t think that we have done the hangup job that some people seem to feel that we have in bringing environmental control to maturity.  相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDTs) are sulfur analogues of polychlorinated dibenzofurans. Recently, PCDTs have been found in stack gas and fly ash samples, pulp mill effluents, sediments and in some aquatic organisms. PCDTs have been analyzed by high resolution GC/MS and by other GC-MS techniques. Combustion is until now the major known source of PCDTs in the environment. Tri-, tetra- and pentaCDTs in concentrations approaching those of PCDTs have been analyzed in some samples from waste incineration and metal reclamation. Concentrations of PCDTs in pulp mill effluents have been found to be quite low. 2378-TeCDT was found to be the major TeCDT isomer in some pulp mill effluents. Preliminary toxicological investigations have shown that PCDTs possess some kind of dioxin type toxicity.  相似文献

The sediment loads of many of the world's major rivers have changed significantly in recent years due to land-use change, reservoir construction, and other human impacts on their drainage basins. For many rivers, the loads have decreased, whereas for others, they have increased. Such changes can have important implications for both the natural functioning of the system as well as for human exploitation of the river system. This paper considers the evidence for recent changes in the sediment load of the Mekong River. The available data have a number of limitations in terms of both sampling frequency and the period of coverage, but they have been processed to provide a basis for considering the changes in the sediment load of the river over the period extending from the early 1960s to 2002. Although there is evidence of increasing loads at some measuring stations, the overall trends show little evidence of major changes, and the system provides evidence of buffering through storage. As of 2002, the construction of major dams on the headwaters in China appears to have had little impact on the sediment load, although as further larger dams are commissioned, the sediment load of the Mekong can be expected to decrease.  相似文献

The molecular connectivity indices (MCIs) have been successfully used for over 20 years in quantitative structure activity relationships (QSAR) modelling in various areas of physics, chemistry, biology, drug design, and environmental sciences. With this review, we hope to assist present and future QSAR practitioners to apply MCIs more wisely and more critically. First, we have described the methods of calculation and systematics of MCIs. This section should be helpful in rational selection of MCIs for QSAR modelling. Then we have presented our long-term experience in the application of MCIs through several characteristic and successful QSAR models for estimating partitioning and chromatographic properties of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). We have also analysed the trends in calculated MCIs and discussed their physical interpretation. In conclusion, several practical recommendations and warnings, based on our research experience, have been given for the application of MCIs in the QSAR modelling.  相似文献

Residues of persistent chlorinated hydrocarbons HCB, BHC isomers, Heptachlor and -epoxide, DDE, Aldrin, Dieldrin and PCBshave been analysed in selected environmental samples soil, grass roots, pine-needles, hen's eggs and sheep's milk from Northern Greece (Xanthi). Almost all samples have shown residues in a range of 0,1 – 10 ppb except eggs and milk, which have been partially contaminated with HCB (approx. 20 ppb), DDE (approx. 40 ppb) and Dieldrin (approx. 30 – 40 ppb) related to freshweight. The contamination levels have been in the same order of magnitude as in environmental samples from Germany except PCBs, which have been accumulated in German samples tendencially higher. All residues detected have been significantly lower than the limits allowed in food stuffs.  相似文献

We have examined approximately 15,000 pigeons living in the radioactive area polluted by releases of the Siberian Chemical Plant (SChP) as a result of an accident in April 1993. We have detected that almost all of the population of pigeons have a high frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes in their peripheral blood. Moreover, we have found that pigeons living in the downwind cities and towns situated closest to the SChP, particularly in the northern districts of the city of Tomsk and in the closed-city of Tomsk-7 (Seversk), have a significantly high frequency of micronucleated erythrocytes. The assessment of the situation in other Siberian cities has shown that frequencies of micronucleated erythrocytes in pigeons living in Tomsk and Seversk are significantly higher than those in pigeons in the control cities. After the radiation accident the highest frequencies of micronucleated erythrocytes was detected after six months and it gradually decreased over three years but there has been no full normalization. However, full normalization in frequencies of micronucleated erythrocytes in pigeons placed in a vivarium occurred within six months. We have found that frequencies of micronucleated erythrocytes are significantly higher in female pigeons than in males.  相似文献

The aquatic environment represents the final repository for many human-generated pollutants associated with anthropogenic activities. The quality of natural freshwater systems is easily disrupted by the introduction of pollutants from urban, industrial and agricultural processes. To assess the extent of chemical perturbation and associated environmental degradation, physico-chemical parameters have been monitored in conjunction with biota in numerous biological monitoring protocols. Most studies incorporating organisms into such approaches have focussed on fish and macroinvertebrates. More recently, interest in the ecology of parasites in relation to environmental monitoring has indicated that these organisms are sensitive towards the quality of the macroenvironment. Variable responses towards exposure to pollution have been identified at the population and component community level of a number of parasites. Furthermore, such responses have been found to differ with the type of pollutant and the lifestyle of the parasite. Generally, endoparasite infection levels have been shown to become elevated in relation to poorer water quality conditions, while ectoparasites are more sensitive, and exposure to contaminated environments resulted in a decline in ectoparasite infections. Furthermore, endoparasites have been found to be suitable accumulation indicators for monitoring levels of several trace elements and metals in the environment. The ability of these organisms to accumulate metals has further been observed to be of benefit to the host, resulting in decreased somatic metal levels in infected hosts. These trends have similarly been found for host–parasite models in African freshwater environments, but such analyses are comparatively sparse compared to other countries. Recently, studies on diplozoids from two freshwater systems have indicated that exposure to poorer water quality resulted in decreased infections. In the Vaal River, the poor water quality resulted in the extinction of the parasite from a site below the Vaal River Barrage. Laboratory exposures have further indicated that oncomiracidia of Paradiplozoon ichthyoxanthon are sensitive to exposure to dissolved aluminium. Overall, parasites from African freshwater and marine ecosystems have merit as effect and accumulation indicators; however, more research is required to detail the effects of exposure on sensitive biological processes within these organisms.  相似文献

Over 70 pesticides have been detected in ground water. Aldicarb and atrazine along with the soil fumigants EDB and DCP and DBCP have been the pesticides most frequently detected in ground water. Atrazine concentrations have been correlated with high nitrate concentrations. The triazine herbicides, simazine and cyanazine, have also been detected in ground water. The annual amount of recharge, soil type, depth of aquifer from the surface, nitrate contamination and soil pH are important field parameters in determining ground-water contamination potential by pesticides. Pesticide leaching is reduced by proper choice of crop rotation, increasing pesticide application efficiency, and integrated pest management.  相似文献

Investigations have shown that near- and mid-infrared reflectance spectroscopy can accurately determine organic-C in soil. Efforts have also demonstrated that both can differentiate between organic and inorganic-C in soils, but the mid-infrared produces more accurate calibrations. Nevertheless, the greatest benefit would come with in situ determinations where factors such as particle size, sample heterogeneity and moisture can be important. While the variations in large (> 20 mesh) particle size can adversely effect calibration accuracy, efforts have demonstrated that the scanning of larger amounts of sample can overcome this, but the effects of moisture have not been fully explored. While under in situ conditions C distribution and sample heterogeneity are a problem for any analytical method, the rapid analysis possible with spectroscopic techniques will allow many more samples to be analyzed. In conclusion, near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy have great potential for providing the C values needed for C sequestration studies.  相似文献

Data for eight reservoirs in the South Pennines covering the period 1980-98, and for 1988-98 at the River Etherow Acid Waters Monitoring Network site, have been analysed for temporal trends using the Seasonal Kendall test. Rising trends in pH were identified at seven of the eight reservoirs, generally accompanied by declining aluminium levels. Nitrate concentrations have, however, increased sharply at the two reservoirs for which adequate data were available. Data for a wider range of determinands at the Etherow suggest that pH increases in the region can be attributed to declining sulphate concentrations, as a result of reductions in sulphur deposition. Nitrate concentrations have again increased at this site. Results are significant in a national context in that pH recovery, although widely believed to have taken place in the UK since the 1970s, has rarely been shown to have occurred. For the South Pennine region, which has been severely acidified by historically high acid deposition levels, there have clearly been improvements over the last 18 years, although many surface waters remain acidic. Observed trends for nitrate suggest that some of the pH recovery resulting from reduced sulphur deposition may have been offset by nitrogen saturation in the region, due in part to continued high levels of nitrogen deposition.  相似文献

Over the past half-century there have been major changes in building materials and consumer products used indoors. Composite-wood, synthetic carpets, polymeric flooring, foam cushioning, plastic items and scented cleaning agents have become ubiquitous. The same is true for mechanical and electrical appliances such as washer/dryers, TVs and computers. These materials and products emit an array of chemicals including solvents, unreacted monomers, and additives. The consequent changes in emission profiles for indoor pollutants have been accompanied by modifications in building operations. Residences and non-residences are less ventilated than they were decades ago. Air-conditioned buildings are more numerous, especially in certain parts of the world. Most of these recirculate a high fraction of their air. The personal habits of building occupants, including the fraction who smoke indoors, have also changed. Taken together, these changes have altered the kind and concentrations of chemicals that occupants are exposed to in their homes, workplaces and schools. Since the 1950s, levels of certain indoor pollutants (e.g., formaldehyde, aromatic and chlorinated solvents, chlorinated pesticides, PCBs) have increased and then decreased. Levels of other indoor pollutants have increased and remain high (e.g., phthalate esters, brominated flame-retardants, nonionic surfactants and their degradation products). Many of the chemicals presently found in indoor environments, as well as in the blood and urine of occupants, were not present 50 years ago. Given the public's exposure to such species, there would be exceptional value in monitoring networks that provided cross-sectional and longitudinal information regarding pollutants found in representative buildings.  相似文献

Oxidation reactions have depleted sulfide minerals in the shallow tailings and have generated sulfate- and metal-rich pore water throughout the East Tailings Management Area (ETMA) at Lynn Lake, Manitoba, Canada. Information concerning the tailings geochemistry and mineralogy suggest the sulfide oxidation processes have reached an advanced stage in the area proximal to the point of tailings discharge. In contrast, the distal tailings, or slimes area, have a higher moisture content close to the impoundment surface, thereby impeding the ingress of oxygen and limiting sulfide oxidation. Numerical modelling of sulfide oxidation indicates the maximum rate of release for sulfate, Fe, and Ni occurred shortly after tailings deposition ceased. Although the sulfide minerals have been depleted in the very shallow tailings, the modelling suggests that sulfide oxidation will continue for hundreds and possibly thousands of years. The combination of sulfide minerals, principally pyrrhotite, that is susceptible to weathering processes and the relatively dry, coarse-grained nature of the tailings have resulted in the formation of a massive-hardpan layer in the proximal area of the ETMA. Because extensive accumulations of secondary oxyhydroxides of ferric iron are already present, remediation strategies for the ETMA should focus on mitigating the release of sulfide oxidation products rather than on preventing further oxidation.  相似文献

Both frequency and intensity of disturbances in many ecosystems have been greatly enhanced by increasing human activities. As a consequence, the short-lived plant species including many exotics might have been dramatically increased in terms of both richness and abundance on our planet, while many long-lived species might have been lost. Such conclusions can be drawn from broadly observed successional cycles in both theoretical and empirical studies. This article discusses 2 major issues that have been largely overlooked in current ecosystem management policies and conservation efforts: i) life history constraints; and ii) future global warming trends. It also addresses the importance of these 2 factors in balancing disturbance frequency and intensity for optimal biodiversity maintenance and ecosystem management.  相似文献

The general properties of piezoelectric sorption detectors utilised in the detection of air pollution have been characterised. Examples of detection, with the aid of these detectors, of the organophosphorus compounds, sulphur dioxide, ammonia, hydrocarbons and their derivatives and other air pollutants have been given. We have compiled the evolution of the radiative forcing for several mechanisms based on our radiative transfer models using a variety of information sources to establish time histories. The anthropogenic forcing mechanisms considered are well-mixed greenhouse gases, ozone, and tropospheric aerosols (direct and indirect effect). The natural forcing mechanisms taken into account are the radiative effects of solar irradiance variation and particles of volcanic origin. In general there has been an increase in the radiative forcing during the 20th century. The exception is a decline in the radiative forcing in the 1945–1970 period. We have found that the evolution of anthropogenic particle emissions in the same period may have been a major cause of this decline in the forcing. We have discussed uncertainties in the various forcings and their evolution. The uncertainties are large for many forcing mechanisms, especially the impact of anthropogenic aerosols. In particular the indirect effect of aerosols on clouds is difficult to quantify. Several evolutions of their effect may have been possible, strongly influencing the evolution of the total anthropogenic radiative forcing.  相似文献

The importance of earthworms to ecosystem functioning has led to many studies on the impacts of metals on earthworms. Far less attention has been paid to the impact that earthworms have on soil metals both in terms of metal mobility and availability. In this review we consider which earthworms have been used in such studies, which soil components have been investigated, which types of soil have been used and what measures of mobility and availability applied. We proceed to review proposed reasons for effects: changes in microbial populations, pH, dissolved organic carbon and metal speciation. The balance of evidence suggests that earthworms increase metal mobility and availability but more studies are required to determine the precise mechanism for this.  相似文献

In this study, low pressure systems have been applied for exhaust gas recycling (EGR), which is applied in certain operating conditions. Induction air, exhaust gas flow, amount of exhaust gas added to the induction air, amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the exhaust gas, and amount of carbon dioxide in the induction air mixed with the exhaust gas, have been measured and the EGR ratio has been determined using four different calculation methods. The obtained results have been compared, and it has been noted that all the four methods have given similar results, and the deviation among them has been noted to be 1% at most. Deviations among the results have been explained. In the concluding section, a relation has been formed between the variables chosen as basic parameters, electronic re-circulation gate control, and variables utilised in EGR ratio determination methods.  相似文献

This study applies a methodology for discriminating local and external contributions of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) at a rural background station in the North-western coast of Spain. The main inputs at the nearest scale have come from soil dust, marine aerosol and road traffic. At a larger scale, the highest contributions have come from fossil-fuel combustion sources, giving rise to relatively high ammonium sulphate background levels, mainly in summer. External contributions from long-range transport processes of African dust and nitrate have been detected. Morocco and Western Sahara have been identified as the main potential source regions of African dust, with a higher content of Al and Ti than other crustal components. Geographical areas from central and Eastern Europe have been identified as potential sources of particulate nitrate. The discrimination of the PM contribution from natural and anthropogenic sources at different geographical scales is a necessary information for establishing PM reduction strategies in specific areas.  相似文献
