Energy policy is a key issue for economic and environmental policies. Indeed, energy is an indispensable element for economic development while, on the other hand, it causes severe environmental problems. In this context, a pressure for using renewable energy resources and for energy saving has emerged and expanded in recent years. As a result, energy policy is being reoriented under the new conditions. This paper attempts to evaluate the positive effects of vegetation with a multi-scale approach: an urban and a building scale.Monitoring the urban heat island in four areas of New York City, we have found an average of 2 °C difference of temperatures between the most and the least vegetated areas, ascribable to the substitution of vegetation with man-made building materials.At micro-scale, we have assessed the effect of surface albedo on climate through the use of a climatological model. Then, using the CO2 equivalents as indicators of the impact on climate, we have compared the surface albedo, and the construction, replacement and use phase of a black, a white and a green roof. By our analyses, we found that both the white and the green roofs are less impactive than the black one; with the thermal resistance, the biological activity of plants and the surface albedo playing a crucial role.  相似文献

Diesel exhaust consists of a complex mixture of chemicals which contain known genotoxicants, one of which is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which may be associated with adverse respiratory health outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the distribution patterns of PAHs (anthracene, naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, cyclopentaphenanthrene, pyrene, fluoranthene, benzanthracene, chrysene, benzo(e)pyrene, benzoacephenanthrylene, and benzo(a)pyrene) in serum collected from asthmatic and healthy control children. PAH serum levels were measured in samples collected from children who lived in 11 different locations in/round Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (Al-yarmouk, Usaibi, Sultana Al-kadema, Omrrojam, Kof, Janoob Dawdmi, Guberah, Arabbuah, Al-mozahemyah, Iskan Al-mazzer, and Al-gharabi) during the period 2010–2011. Our results showed that the highest total mean concentrations of PAH were found in serum samples collected from people who lived in Sultana Aljadhida, Almozahemyah, Guberah, and Omrrojam and were 663.9, 486.17, 412.18, and 258.6 ng ml?1, respectively. The most prevalent PAHs in serum samples were naphthalene, bezanthracene, benzoacephenanthrylene, phenanthrene, chrysene, and benzo(a)pyrene with a frequency that ranged from 54.5 to 90.9 % positive samples. A close monitoring of PAH pollution is strongly recommended, especially in food and plant samples, because of their high bioaccumulation capacity.  相似文献

Iron in its familiar form exists in the +2 and +3 oxidation states, however, higher oxidation state of iron +6, ferrate(VI) (Fe(VI)O(4)(2-)) can be obtained. The high oxidation power of ferrate(VI) can be utilized in developing cleaner ("greener") technology for remediation processes. This paper demonstrates the unique property of ferrate(VI) to degrade almost completely the cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (C(5)H(5)N(+)(CH(2))(15)CH(3).H(2)O Cl(-), CPC). The Rate law for the oxidation of CPC by ferrate(VI) at pH 9.2 was found to be: -d[Fe(VI)]/dt = k[Fe(VI)][CPC](2). Ferrate(VI) oxidizes CPC within minutes and molar consumption of ferrate(VI) was nearly equal to the oxidized CPC. The decrease in total organic carbon (TOC) from CPC was more than 95%; suggesting mineralization of CPC to carbon dioxide. Ammonium ion was the other product of the oxidation. This is the first report in which Fe(VI)O(4)(2-) ion opens the pyridine ring and mineralizes the aliphatic chain of the organic molecule giving inorganic ions.  相似文献

The plasticizer di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and its metabolites are considered ubiquitous contaminants, which have a range of implications on the environment and human health. This work considered several alternative compounds with structural features similar to DEHP. This added to the understanding of why DEHP is so poorly biodegraded once it enters the environment. These alternative compounds were based on 2-ethylhexyl diesters of maleic acid (cis-isomer), fumaric acid (trans-isomer) and succinic acid (saturated analogue). The rates of biodegradation by the common soil bacterium Rhodococcus rhodocrous were shown to be dependent on the structure of the central unit derived from the diacid used to make the ester. The diacid components of DEHP and the maleate both had a cis orientation and they were the two that were slow to biodegrade. Plasticizing properties were also compared and, because the ester of the saturated succinic acid was degraded quickly and also had good plasticizing properties, it was concluded that the succinic esters of straight chain alcohols would make the best green plasticizers. The maleate ester had excellent plasticizing properties but this is mitigated by a significant resistance to biodegradation.  相似文献
