Sediment-induced reduction in the pumping rate of the tropical sponge Verongia lacunosa 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The pumping rate of Verongia lacunosa (Lamarck), a tropical marine sponge, varied between 1 and 6 l h-1 in clear seawater for sponges with a volume of about 500 ml. Sponges were exposed to seawater containing suspensions of clay maintained at a constant level for 4 h; concentrations of 11 mg l-1 or greater significantly reduced the pumping rate, while concentrations of 3 mg l-1 did not. Other sponges were exposed to suspensions of clay for 4 days; a concentration of 95 mg l-1 caused a continuing decline in the pumping rate. These sponges were more sensitive to sediment than some other suspension-feeding organisms. 场外硝化-原位反硝化是垃圾填埋场氮管理的新途径.本文利用垃圾柱模拟生物反应器填埋场.研究了硝化渗滤液在填埋场内部的变迁及其对垃圾降解的影响.结果表明,硝化渗滤液回灌促进了填埋场垃圾降解,回灌的总氧化态氮(TON)被完全还原,反硝化为主要作用反应,最大TON负荷为28.6 mg(N)kg(TS)-1d-1.当负荷大于11.4 mg(N)kg(TS)-1d-1时,垃圾产甲烷受到抑制.抑制作用随负荷的增加而加强.在此过程中,反硝化逐渐代替产甲烷作用成为填埋场内垃圾降解的主要反应,产生气体以氮气为主,而非甲烷;硝化渗滤液与垃圾的长期作用也改变了填埋场的菌群结构.图5表1参18 相似文献

In situ grazing rates of mixed assemblages of deep-sea benthic boundary-layer zooplankton were measured in July 1983 at a site in the North Atlantic Ocean at 2 175 m depth using a short-term radioisotope-uptake method. Zooplankton were collected with an opening-closing net system from the bottom 1 m of the ocean and incubated in situ with mixed tritiated amino acids in special cod-end chambers. Incubations were terminated at depth by the addition of MS-222. Radioisotope uptake beyond that of dead controls was shown by both the zooplankton and particulate fractions. Grazing rates in the deep-sea experiments were surprisingly high, being comparable to wintertime Narragansett Bay zooplankton grazing rates determined in a separate series of laboratory experiments. These laboratory experiments also documented nonparticle-associated uptake of dissolved amino acids by Narragansett Bay zooplankton, but the importance of this in the deep sea is unknown. The deep-sea benthic boundary layer may be a region of elevated rates and activity because of its higher particulate concentrations, and our experiments may also have measured maximum rather than average rates. 相似文献

In situ measurements of seagrass photosynthesis in relation to inorganic carbon (Ci) availability, increased pH and an inhibitor
of extracellular carbonic anhydrase were made using an underwater pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer. By combining
the instrument with a specially designed Perspex chamber, we were able to alter the water surrounding a leaf without removing
it from the growing plant. Responses to Ci within the chamber showed that subtidal plants of the seagrasses Cymodocea serrulata and Halophila ovalis had photosynthetic rates that were limited by the ambient Ci concentration depending on the irradiance that was available
during short-term photosynthesis–irradiance trials. Relative electron transport rates (RETRs) at light saturation (up to 500 μ
mol photons m−2 s−1) increased by 66–100% when the Ci concentration was increased from ca. 2.2 to 6.2 mM. On the other hand, intertidal plants
of the same species exhibited a much lesser limitation of photosynthesis by Ci at any irradiance (up to 1500 μ mol photons
m−2 s−1). Both species were able to use HCO−
3 efficiently, and there was stronger evidence for direct uptake of HCO−
3 rather than extracellular dehydration of HCO−
3 to CO2 prior to Ci uptake. Subtidally, H. ovalis and C. serrulata grew to 10 and 12 m, respectively, where ambient irradiances were approximately 16 and 11% of those at the surface. Maximum
RETRs (at light saturation) were lower for these deep-growing plants than for the intertidally growing ones. For both species,
the onset of light saturation of photosynthesis (E
k) occurred at approximately 100 μ mol photons m−2 s−1 for the deep water populations, which was four and two times lower than for the shallow populations of C. serrulata and H. ovalis, respectively. This, and the differences in maximal photosynthetic rates (RETR
max), reflects an acclimation of the deep-growing populations to the lower light environment. The results presented here show
that photosynthesis, as measured in situ, was limited by the availability of Ci for the deeper growing plants in Zanzibar,
while the intertidally growing plants photosynthesised at close to Ci saturation. The latter result is contrary to previous
conclusions regarding Ci limitations for these intertidal plants, and, in general, our findings highlight the need for performing
similar experiments in situ rather than under laboratory conditions.

The sexual and asexual phases of the reproductive cycle of the sponge Mycalecontarenii (Martens, 1824) were studied from samples collected over a period of 2 years (June 1994 to May 1996) in a Mediterranean coastal
basin (Porto Cesareo, southwestern Apulia). The species is viviparous; year round it shows a discontinuous oocyte production.
No males were found, possibly owing to the very short period of spermatogenesis. M.␣contarenii produces asexual buds during autumn and winter, and this process seems to be related to changes in water temperature. Even
though, at present, we cannot evaluate the incidence of larval recruitment, we postulate that asexual reproduction in M.contarenii plays a crucial role in maintaining the sponge population.

Antimicrobial activities of extracts from tropical Atlantic marine plants against marine pathogens and saprophytes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Studies investigating disease resistance in marine plants have indicated that secondary metabolites may have important defensive functions against harmful marine microorganisms. The goal of this study was to systematically screen extracts from marine plants for antimicrobial effects against marine pathogens and saprophytes. Lipophilic and hydrophilic extracts from species of 49 marine algae and 3 seagrasses collected in the tropical Atlantic were screened for antimicrobial activity against five ecologically relevant marine microorganisms from three separate kingdoms. These assay microbes consisted of the pathogenic fungus Lindra thalassiae, the saprophytic fungus Dendryphiella salina, the saprophytic stramenopiles, Halophytophthora spinosa and Schizochytrium aggregatum, and the pathogenic bacterium Pseudoaltermonas bacteriolytica. Overall, 90% of all species surveyed yielded extracts that were active against one or more, and 77% yielded extracts that were active against two or more assay microorganisms. Broad-spectrum activity against three or four assay microorganisms was observed in the extracts from 48 and 27% of all species, respectively. The green algae Halimeda copiosa and Penicillus capitatus (Chlorophyta) were the only species to yield extracts active against all assay microorganisms. Among all assay microorganisms, both fungi were the most resistant to the extracts tested, with less than 21% of all extracts inhibiting the growth of either L. thalassiae or D. salina. In contrast, over half of all lipophylic extracts were active against the stramenopiles H. spinosa and S. aggregatum, and the bacterium P. bacteriolytica. Growth sensitivity to hydrophilic extracts varied considerably between individual assay microorganisms. While 48% of all hydrophilic extracts were active against H. spinosa, 27% were active against P. bacteriolytica, and only 14% were active against S. aggregatum. Overall, more lipophilic extracts inhibited microbial growth than hydrophilic extracts. The variability observed in the antimicrobial effects of individual extracts against each assay microorganism reflects the importance of choosing appropriate test microbes in assays from which ecologically relevant information is sought. Results from this survey demonstrate that antimicrobial activities are prevalent among extracts from marine algae and seagrasses, suggesting that antimicrobial chemical defenses are widespread among marine plants. 相似文献

Benthic organisms can significantly alter the physical properties of marine sediments, but it has hitherto been difficult to assess and quantify the effects of bioturbation. In situ geophysical techniques offer new methods for measuring these effects: measurement of acoustic shear-wave velocity and electrical resistivity allows nondestructive assessment of the properties of the grain framework and pore-fluid matrix, respectively, of the seabed sediment. The influence of burrowing invertebrates on the structural properties of sandy sediments at intertidal locations on the coast of Wales (UK) was investigated during the periol 1986–1987 using these techniques. Three species (Arenicola marina, Corophium arenarium and Lanice conchilega) were selected on the basis of their contrasting styles of burrow construction. All three species produced measurable and significant, although different, changes in bed properties. They modified shear-wave propagation through the bed by changing bed rigidity: while A. marina and C. arenarium decreased rigidity by creating open burrows, L. conchilega increased rigidity by building shell-lined tubes. All produced a decrease in electrical resistivity by altering porosity and/or tortuosity, which implies an increase in permeability; these changes were attributable not only to the presence of the burrows but also to modification of the between-burrow sediment texture and bed properties. 相似文献

A bacterium capable of degrading dichlorvos was isolated from the rape phyllosphere and designated YD4. The strain was identified as Flavobacterium sp., based on its phenotypic features and 16S rRNA gene sequence. Strain YD4 was able to utilize dichlorvos as the sole source of phosphorus. In situ enhanced bioremediation of dichlorvos by YD4 was hereafter studied. Chlorpyrifos and phoxim could also be degraded by this strain as the sole phosphorus source. A higher degradation rate of dichlorvos was observed after spraying YD4 onto the surface of rape leaves when compared to the sterilized-YD4 and water-treated samples. The results indicated that pesticide-degrading epiphytic bacterium could become a new way for in situ phyllosphere bioremediation where the hostile niche is unsuitable for other pesticide-degrading bacteria isolated from soil and water. 相似文献

Exudation of phlorotannins (polyphenolics) was measured in situ from the sublittoral kelp Ecklonia radiata at two locations near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia during 1992–1993. Minimally disruptive techniques were used in which individual plants were enclosed within clear plastic bags in order to concentrate exudates. Rates of exudation from E. radiata were low relative to most previous studies, with a mean rate (averaged across four seasons and two sites) of 5.5 g g (dry wt)-1 h-1. Exudation was greatest in summer and least in winter at one site, but there were no seasonal differences at a second, more protected site. There was no measurable diurnal variation in exudation rates. Exudation after a period of heavy storms was not significantly different from exudation during calm weather, but severe physical damage to the kelp did increase exudation. Our results suggest that exudation of phlorotannins in temperate Australian waters may be less ecologically important than has been suggested for coastal systems in the Northern Hemisphere. 相似文献

In situ measurements of community respiration were made at two stations in Castle Harbor, Bermuda, during April and May, 1971. Total community respiration was 20.67 and 19.11 ml O2 m-2 h-1 at Stations 1 and 2, respectively, in April. In May, respiration increased with water temperature to 26.99 and 24.56 ml O2 m-2 h-1. Significant differences (P<0.05) existed between stations and sampling periods. Bacterial respiration was estimated from sediment treatment with streptomycin-SO4. Values ranged from 7.71 to 8.72 ml O2 m-2 h-1 in April and May, respectively. No significant difference existed between sampling periods or stations. No detectable chemical O2 demand of the sediment, determined by a formalin treatment, was found. Total community respiration was further compartmentalized into macrofaunal, meiofaunal, and microfaunal-microfloral components. An investigation of the free amino acid patterns of 67 species representing 50 genera of West Indian Demospongiae has been undertaken to examine the value of this biochemical approach in adding another parameter to phylogenetic inquiries. Two-dimensional thin-layer electrophoresis and chromatography were used to separate mixtures of naturally occurring ninhydrin-positive compounds. Individual components were identified as far as possible, and the fingerprints or patterns of the species studied were used as a basis for evaluating relationships. The subclass Ceractinomorpha is a relatively homogeneous group, with free amino acid patterns characterized by a consistent representation of protein amino acids and by the absence of compounds other than taurine and hypotaurine in the neutral region of the chromatogram. Two variants of this general pattern can be recognized, one found in the orders Dictyoceratida and Poecilosclerida, the other occurring in the order Haplosclerida and the family Halichondriidae of the order Halichondrida. Unexpected results within this subclass are the wide separation of the dictyoceratid families Spongiidae and Verongiidae, the anomolous patterns of the genera Agelas and Iotrochota and of the family Callyspongiidae, and the suggestive affinities of the family Hymeniacidonidae with the order Hadromerida. The subclass Tetractinomorpha appears to represent a polyphyletic assemblage in which 5 recognizable patterns can be distinguished. These represent the orders Homosclerophorida, Choristida, Spirophorida, Hadromerida and Axinellida. Of interest are the suggestions that the order Choristida is in itself a heterogeneous group, and that certain genera now placed in the order Axinellida may in fact be more closely related to the Poecilosclerida. 相似文献

Vertical profiling of the upper ocean with a laser/fiber optic fluorometer enabled the determination of fluorescence emission spectra of photosynthetic pigments over small vertical scales. Simultaneous acquisition of phycoerythrin (PE) and chlorophyll (chl) emission spectra allowed in situ differentiation between PE-containing cells (cryptomonads and cyanobacteria) and other chl-containing autotrophs. Further, fluorescence spectral peak shifts associated with different species of PE-containing cells resulted in even finer scale in situ taxonomic differentiation. We found that the phycoerythrin fluorescence emission maxima shifted from 578 nm near the surface, to 585 m at the base of the shallow thermocline (30% light level), and to 590 nm below the thermocline at the base of the euphotic zone (1% light level). These shifts in peak emission coincided with a taxonomic change in the PE-containing cells (as determined from analysis of discrete bottle samples) from a greater proportion of Synechococcus spp. in the upper water column to a greater proportion of cryptomonads at the base of the euphotic zone. These results indicate that the composition of the phytoplankton assemblage may be assessed in situ without sample collection. 相似文献

Productivity of mangrove ecosystems is compromised by anthropogenic activities including over-exploitation of wood. This study set out to understand how different wood harvesting regimes have affected the biodiversity of a tropical ecosystem and to identify relationships between the heavy metal concentrations in the mangrove sediments and tree felling. Soil samples were collected and plant diversity studies carried out on seven sites in the mangrove. Physico-chemical, chemical and mineralogical analyses were done on soil samples and plant population structure, species richness, evenness and diversity index at these sites were calculated. Results showed that soils across sites were characteristically clayey and acidic, with high organic matter content. Minerals identified included quartz, gibbsite, goethite, hematite and kaolinite. Heavy metal concentrations were higher in Sites 6 and 7 with a longer history of anthropogenic activity. There were strong negative correlations between the duration of logging and NO3-N (r = ?0.838, p = 0.019), total N (r = ?0.837, p = 0.019), NH4 +-N (r = ?0.844, p = 0.017), Mg = (?0.789, p = 0.035), K (r = ?0.819, p = 0.024), and Na (r = ?0.988, p = 0.002). Sites which had experienced logging for longer periods (sites 3, 6, and 7) had lower nutrient content and lower values for species richness and diversity index. Logging in mangrove ecosystems could alter soil characteristics, decreasing plant diversity and abundance. Logging dynamics around mangrove ecosystems should be considered in the wider strategy for management and conservation of similar mangrove ecosystems. 相似文献

In situ diel variations in gut pigment contents of neritic (Acartia omorii andPseudocalanus minutus) and oceanic copepods (Calanus plumchrus andC. cristatus) were analyzed.A. omorii andP. minutus were sampled in Onagawa Bay on the east coast of Japan in May and August 1987, andC. plumchrus andC. cristatus were sampled in the Bering Sea in June 1986. Gut pigments were generally high at night, and bimodal feeding rhythms were observed in all species. The first peak of gut pigments occurred between sunset and midnight and was followed by a midnight decrease in gut pigment levels, resulting in eventual evacuation of the gut. The second peak was observed a few hours after sunrise. Incubation experiments indicated that ingestion rates of starved copepods were higher than those of acclimated copepods. This phenomenon was most notable at high food concentrations. Gut pigments of starved copepods rapidly increased after exposure to high concentrations of culturedThalassiosira decipiens. These findings suggest that in situ feeding behavior of herbivorous copepods includes periods of cessation or reduction in feeding during the night, and consequently, feeding activity is periodically enhanced with starvation. Starvation enhanced feeding behavior is most obvious in the large oceanic species,C. plumchrus andC. cristatus and is not distinct in small coastal species such asA. omorii. 相似文献

Otolith chemistry can be used to assess pelagic larval fish connectivity by comparing spatially variable otolith edge chemistry (corresponding to the site of collection) to otolith core chemistry (corresponding to the site of hatching). However, because the otolith’s edge and core represent different life stages, the deposition of elements may differ, thus complicating direct comparisons of edge and core chemistry to investigate connectivity. Here we present data from a field experiment in which otoliths from embryos (3 days post-fertilization) and juveniles of Stegastes partitus were collected at the same site and time, and chemically analyzed to assess whether elemental concentrations of otoliths vary ontogenetically. Separate multivariate analyses, each investigating the spatial/temporal variability in the chemistry of either embryo otoliths or the edges of juvenile otoliths, revealed significant differences, suggesting an environmental influence to the chemical signals of otoliths. A nested multivariate analysis assessing whether otolith chemistry varied with life history stage (i.e., ontogenetic variability) indicated that elemental concentrations of embryo otoliths were significantly greater than that of juvenile otolith edges. Specifically, embryo elemental concentrations of Mn, Zn, Sn, Ba, Ce, and Pb were between 2 and 163 times greater than those of the corresponding juvenile otoliths, and thus the environment was not the primary determinant of embryo otolith chemistry. Water current in 4 species of ascidians (Ascidia mentula Müller, 1776; Phallusia mammillata Cuvier, 1815; Styela plicata (Lesueur, 1823) and Microcosmus sabatieri Roule, 1885) has been recorded for the first time in situ with hot film probes. The mathematical treatment of probe calibration has allowed the evaluation of the characteristics of currents (minimal, maximal and average velocities) and the calculation of pumping rates. The method utilized yields qualitative and quantitative results: Pumping is continuous, and no particular rhythm shows up in the curves obtained. The velocity of the current does not change in the course of a recording, but it can vary from one experiment to another in the same individual; these variations are related to the variability of the diameter of the cloacal siphon rather than to a change in the rhythm of the ciliary activity. The average velocities are 3.42 cm sec-1 for A. mentula, 3.92 for P. mammillata, 3.30 for S. plicata and 3.79 for M. sabatieri. The pumping rates are fairly constant for the same individual. The means, expressed as ml x h-1 x g-1 organ dry weight are 3422 for A. mentula, 2070 for P. mammillata, 4892 for S. plicata and 3084 for M. sabatieri.This work was supported by the C.N.R.S. (L.A. Assessments of photosynthetic activity in marine plants can now be made in situ using a newly developed, submersible, pulse-amplitude
modulated (PAM) fluorometer: Diving-PAM. PAM fluorometry provides a measure of chlorophyll a fluorescence using rapid-light curves in which the electron-transport rate can be determined for plants exposed to ambient
light conditions. This technique was used to compare the photosynthetic responses of seagrasses near Rottnest Island, Western
Australia. Several fluorescence parameters were measured as a function of time of day and water depth; electron-transport
rate (ETR), quantum yield, photochemical quenching and non-photochemical quenching and Photosystem II (PSII) photochemical
efficiency (F
v
:F
m
ratio) were measured. Results indicate that recent light-history plays a crucial role in seagrass photosynthetic responses.
Maximum ETR of Posidonia australis, Amphibolis antarctica and Halophila ovalis is influenced by the irradiance during the diurnal cycle, with low rates at dawn and dusk (<10 μmol electron m−2 s−1), highest rates in late morning (40 to 60 μmol electron m−2 s−1) and a mid-day depression. Maximum ETR and PSII photochemical efficiency varied widely between seagrass species and were
not correlated. A comparison of photochemical to non-photochemical quenching indicated that seagrasses in shallow water receiving
high light have a high capacity for non-photochemical quenching (e.g. light protection) compared to seagrasses in deep water.
These results indicate that in situ measurements of photosynthesis will provide new insights into the mechanisms and adaptive
responses of marine plants.

In comparative tests, acrylic diffusion chambers (voltume=42 ml) with polycarbonate filter membranes (1 m pore diameter) consistently supported higher cell yields and faster growth rates of summer phytoplankton populations and species from Narragansett Bay than did dialysis bags (volume=50 ml, 0.24–0.48 nm pore diameter) or bottle cultures (with or without added nutrients). Stirring of diffusion chambers or dialysis bags had less effect on growth responses than did the choice of the containment membrane. Exchange measurements showed the polycarbonate filters (0.49 ml cm-2 h-1) to be five times more permeable than dialysis membranes (0.09 ml cm-2 h-1) per unit area. The mean of measured half-life times for water in diffusion chambers was less than one hour while comparable half-life times for dialysis bags were approximately 3 h. Diatoms from the <10 m size fraction had higher growth rates than assemblages of microflagellates and non-motile ultraplankton. Stirring of diffusion chambers did not adversly effect the growth of microflagellates or non-motile ultraplankton. Growth responses in diffusion chambers moored in situ were generally similar to those measured in diffusion chambers incubated in outdoor tanks connected to a running seawater system. 相似文献

In situ measures of foraging success and prey encounter reveal marine habitat-dependent search strategies 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Predators are thought to reduce travel speed and increase turning rate in areas where resources are relatively more abundant, a behavior termed "area-restricted search." However, evidence for this is rare, and few empirical data exist for large predators. Animals exhibiting foraging site fidelity could also be spatially aware of suitable feeding areas based on prior experience; changes in movement patterns might therefore arise from the anticipation of higher prey density. We tested the hypothesis that regions of area-restricted search were associated with a higher number of daily speed spikes (a proxy for potential prey encounter rate) and foraging success in southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina), a species exhibiting both area-restricted searches and high interannual foraging site fidelity. We used onshore morphological measurements and diving data from archival tags deployed during winter foraging trips. Foraging success was inferred from in situ changes in relative lipid content derived from measured changes in buoyancy, and first-passage time analysis was used to identify area-restricted search behavior. Seals exhibited relatively direct southerly movement on average, with intensive search behavior predominantly located at the distal end of tracks. The probability of being in search mode was positively related to changes in relative lipid content; thus, intensively searched areas were associated with the highest foraging success. However, there was high foraging success during the outward transit even though seals moved through quickly without slowing down and increasing turning rate to exploit these areas. In addition, the probability of being in search mode was negatively related to the number of daily speed spikes. These results suggest that movement patterns represent a response to prior expectation of the location of predictable and profitable resources. Shelf habitat was 4-9 times more profitable than the other habitats, emphasizing the importance of the East Antarctic shelf for this and other predators in the region. We have provided rare empirical data with which to investigate the relationship between predator foraging strategy and prey encounter/ foraging success, underlining the importance of inferring the timing and spatial arrangement of successful food acquisition for interpreting foraging strategies correctly. 相似文献
