An adult giant kelp plant (Macrocystis pyrifera), moved from an inshore kelp forest to an offshore, low-nitrogen environment near Santa Catalina Island, California (USA), maintained growth for 2 wk on internal nitrogen reserves. Frond elongation rates decreased significantly during the third week, and plant growth rate (wet wt) dropped from an initial inshore rate of 3.6 to 0.9% d-1. During this 3 wk period, nitrogen contents and free amino acid concentrations decreased, while mannitol and dry contents increased in frond tissues. After depletion of internal nitrogen reserves, the nitrogen content of lamina and stipe tissues averaged 1.1 and 0.7% dry wt, respectively. The experimental plant was exposed to higher ambient nitrogen concentrations during the last 2 wk. Rates of frond elongation and plant growth increased, but nitrogen content and amino acids in frond tissues remained low. Of the total nitrogen contained in frond tissue of the plant before transplantation, 58% was used to support growth in the absence of significant external nitrogen supply. Amino acids constituted a small proportion of these internal nitrogen reserves. Net movement of nitrogen occurred within large fronds, but not between different frond size classes. The nitrogen content of holdfast tissue remained relatively constant at 2.4% dry wt and accounted for 18 to 29% of the total nitrogen. Holdfast nitrogen was not used to support growth of nitrogen-depleted fronds. In comparison to Laminaria longicruris, which is adapted to long seasonal periods of low nitrogen availability, M. pyrifera has small nitrogen-storage capacity. However, internal reserves of M. pyrifera appear adequate to make nitrogen starvation uncommon in southern California kelp forests.  相似文献

The biochemical and energetic composition, spicule content, and toxicity of benthic sponges was investigated in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica from October through December 1984. The predominant organic constituent of sponges was soluble and insoluble protein. Levels of total protein ranged from 17.0 to 55.9% dr. wt. Levels of lipid and carbohydrate were low, ranging from 2.1 to 9.6 and 0.6 to 3.5% dr. wt, respectively. Levels of ash were high and variable (32 t0 79% dr. wt), reflecting species-specific differences in spicule contents. Calculated energy contents of sponges were low, with a mean of 9.8±3.5 kJ g-1 dr. wt; ranging from 5.1 kJ g-1 dr. wt in Sphaerotylus antarcticus to 17.4 kJ g-1 dr. wt in Dendrilla membranosa. Insoluble protein accounted for the greatest contribution to the energetic composition of the sponges, while lipid and carbohydrate combined contributed to less than 25% of the overall energy. Normalized spicule volumes of sponges ranged from 0.15 to 0.38 cm3 g-1 dr. wt. Ichthyotoxicity assays indicated that 9 (56%) of 16 antarctic sponge species were toxic. The most highly toxic species were Mycale acerata and Leucetta leptorhapsis. The high incidence of toxicity in antarctic sponges indicates that the current hypothesis suggesting a simple inverse relationship between toxicity and latitude in marine sponges is invalid. There was little correspondence between the energetic composition or spicule contents of the sponges and feeding patterns (electivity indices) of sponge-eating predators. Although the asteroid Perknaster fuscus antarcticus specializes on the highly toxic, fast-growing M. acerata, most antarctic sponge-eating predators appear to be generalists which feed on the more abundant, non- to mildly-toxic, sponge species. This feeding strategy is based on exploitation of low energy, sedentary prey, which require a minimal energy output to harvest.  相似文献

The biochemical and energetic composition of body components of ten species of bathyal echinoids, and an asteroid, a holothuroid and a stalked crinoid were determined from individuals sampled from a variety of deep-water sites near the Bahamas (north Caribbean Sea) in October 1988. When compared with other studies of echinoderms, no geographic- or depth-related differences in biochemical or energetic composition were found. Body-wall tissues were composed primarily of skeletal material (mineral ash), but were comparatively high in organic material in the echinothuriid echinoids, and the asteroid and holothuroid. Gut tissues and pyloric cecae had high levels of lipid and protein, indicating their potential role in nutrient storage. Body-wall tissues were generally low in energy, but were highest in the echinoidsAraeosoma belli (7.7 kJ g–1 dry wt) andSperosoma antillense (8.0 kJ g–1 dry wt), the asteroidOphidiaster alexandri (8.9 kJ g–1 dry wt), and the holothuroidEostichopus regalis (13.1 kJ g–1 dry wt). Energy levels of gut and pyloric cecal tissues were two to three times higher than those of body-wall tissues. Total somatic tissue energy values varied greatly among species, ranging from 1.5 kJ in the echinoidAspidodiadema jacobyi to 142.1 kJ inE. regalis. As the bathyal echinoderms examined in this study occur in great abundance, they represent a significant reservoir of organic and inorganic materials and energy in deep-water benthic systems.  相似文献

Eleven mesopelagic fish species from the Weddell/Scotia Sea region of the Antarctic captured during the austral spring 1983, austral fall 1986, and austral winter 1988, were analyzed for proximate composition. Water, ash level, protein, lipid and carbohydrate were examined in relation to depth of occurrence and season. No depth-related trends were evident, primarily due to a low species diversity and minimal differences in those species' vertical distributions. The Antarctic speciesElectrona antarctica showed a significant increase in lipid level (% wet wt and % ash-free dry wt) between spring, fall and winter. The increase may signify an accumulation over the productive season, possibly as a reserve for the winter months. Lipid levels (% wet wt and % ash-free dry wt) were significantly lower in the Weddell Sea specimens examined in this study than in previously examined identical and congeneric species taken during the same season from a more productive near-shore Antarctic region. Comparisons with congeners and confamilials from tropical-subtropical and temperate systems revealed variable trends. The Antarctic speciesE. antarctica andCyclothone microdon had lower water and protein (% wet wt) levels than similar species from tropical-subtropical or temperate regions. Lipid levels of the two species are similar to temperate individuals, while energy levels are slightly higher. In contrast, species of the genusBathylagus show no trends in composition as a function of latitude. Differences in productivity, water-column temperature-structure, and seasonality are important considerations when examining trends among mesopelagic species.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses of the south Pacific kelp Lessonia nigrescens of the coast of Valdivia, Chile (40°S), were investigated by exposing its different thallus parts, fronds, stipes and holdfasts, to UV radiation in the laboratory. Biologically effective doses (BEDphotoinhibition300) between 400 and 800 kJ m−2 were required for a 40% inhibition in photosynthesis under UVA+UVB radiation. At BEDphotoinhibition300 close to 250 kJ m−2 (in treatments without UVB), the inhibition of photosynthesis did not exceed 20%. These UV doses were in the range of current daily doses measured in Valdivia on cloudless summer days. In general, exposure to UVB for periods longer than 12 h reduced photosynthesis, measured as maximal quantum yield (F v/F m) and electron transport. The fronds were the most UV-sensitive section of this alga, coinciding with the highest pigments contents and carbon fixation. Evidence of a photodamage was also seen. After a 48 h exposure to PAR+UVA+UVB, a decrease of F v/F m in the fronds was close to 41%, while in the stipes and holdfasts it was 12 and 18%, respectively. Although the thalli from the different size classes showed marked differences in their morphology and morphometry, no obvious differences in the UV tolerance of the fronds were detected. The results indicated that the UV-related responses are integrated in the suite of morpho-functional adaptations of the alga. Although the fronds are spatially more exposed to solar radiation than basal structures (stipes and holdfast), due their high turnover rate they may compensate better detrimental effects of UV. In contrast, stipes and the holdfast are key support structures characterized by low replacement rates and designed to confer hydrodynamic resistance to drag forces.  相似文献

The biochemical composition of eggs spawned from rock scallopsCrassadoma gigantea (Gray) collected from Clayoquot Sound, Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada) in the winter of 1987 and the summer of 1988, differed significantly only in lipid and soluble-ash contents. Major macronutrients were catabolized simultaneously and linearly with time of embryogenesis. Total egg energy expended during development was 11.8 kJ g–1 derived 46.7, 9.8 and 43.5%, from lipid, carbohydrate, and protein, respectively. Glucose in the egg was the dominant source of carbohydrate energy. Deposition of shell was linear with time of embryogenesis and the formation of 44.8% dry wt of shell in the early larval stage, referred to as the D-larva, consumed 64.4% of the total energy expended. Energy required for shell formation was 17.55 kJ g–1. The RNA:DNA ratio declined exponentially from 18.6 in the egg to 2.21 in the D-larva, which was consistent with that of adult bivalves. Many changes in fatty acid composition were linear with time of embryogenesis, and the percentage ofn3- andn6-higher unsaturated fatty acids to total polyethylenic acids exhibited significant declining and increasing trends, respectively. The linear rate of catabolism of eicosapentaenoic acid, 20:5n3, and the constant level of docosahexaenoic acid, 22:6n3, illustrated an energy and a structural role, respectively, for these dominant acids in the embryonic development of the rock scallop.  相似文献

Some morphological characteristics of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera in the Falkland Islands were studied from December 1985 until March 1987 in a shallow and relatively sheltered coastal zone and from December 1985 until January 1987 in a deeper offshore field exposed to swells. Seasonal fluctuations in lamina wet weight, density and form as well as pneumatocyst wet weight form and stipe density (i.e., wet weight per unit length) paralleled fluctuations in frond wet weight. Morphological differences between canopies of the giant kelp in the coastal zone and the offshore bed were probably mainly due to differences in water movement and depth between the two sites. Laminae and pneumatocysts of submersed-frond sites had different shapes than those of canopy-forming portions of fronds at the same sites, and their internodes were longer.  相似文献

Intertidal algae are exposed to a highly variable photic regime because of crashing waves. We measured photosynthetic rate of whole fronds of the seaweeds Postelsia palmaeformis (Ruprecht) (at Bodega Marine Laboratory, 1991) and Hedophyllum sessile (Setchell) (Phaeophyceae) (at Friday Harbor Laboratories, 1990) in flashing and steady-state photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) of equal irradiance, using a recirculating metabolism chamber designed to minimize the thickness of diffusional boundary layers on the surfaces of algal tissues. The dimensionless ratio of photosynthetic rate under flecking PAR (Pfleck) and the sum of photosynthetic rate under steady state PAR (Ps) of high and low irradiance was computed for lightfleck periods from 0.2 to 100 s. Pfleck:Ps is a measure of the light-flash utilization-efficiency in flashing light, and was greater than unity at periods between lighflecks of 2 to 30 s, with a peak at 10 s. We used a novel optical fiber irradiance meter to measure PAR incident on fronds of P. palmaeformis as they were washed about by waves breaking in the intertidal zone, and compared the light records to that obtained by a stationary sensor under the canopy. PAR flashing period was closely correlated with the period of breaking waves in stands of P. palmaeformis. We estimated the seasonal spectrum of period between light flashes in stands of this species by examining the spectral density of ocean waves at Bodega Marine Laboratory, Bodega Bay, California. The wave spectrum peaks at a period (10 s) where light-flashes may theoretically enhance the light-flash utilization-efficiency of seaweeds. We calculate that the enhanced light-flash utilization-efficiency wrought by wave-induced light-flashes may contribute to significant gains in primary productivity of these macroalgae under some conditions.  相似文献

After its introduction, the green alga Codium fragile (Sur.) Hariot ssp. tomentosoides (van Goor) Silva has spread widely on several temperate-zone, rocky shores where non-weedy conspecific subspecies occur (N.E. Atlantic, N.E. Pacific, S. Pacific). To determine how phenologically and morphologically distinctive the invasive alga was relative to native subspecies, I compared marine intertidal populations of C. fragile ssp. tomentosoides and the native C. fragile ssp. novaezelandiae (J. Ag.) Silva (hereafter referred to as ssp. tomentosoides and ssp. novae-zelandiae respectively on New Zealand shores in 1992, 1993 and 1995. On the North Island, the invasive ssp. tomentosoides is sparsely distributed on low intertidal benches on wave-protected shores in the Hauraki Gulf (east coast) in spring and summer, and thalli die back to the perennial holdfast in autumn. In contrast, the native ssp. novaezelandiae forms dense beds within the low intertidal mussel zone on wave-swept shores of Maori Bay (west coast), and fronds are perennial. Whereas ssp. tomentosoides has only a few fronds arising from the spongy basal hold-fast, ssp. novae-zelandiae thalli are composed of many fronds. The ssp. tomentosoides from the Hauraki Gulf is significantly more branched than comparably sized native conspecifics from Maori Bay. These phenological and morphological differences were used to predict the subspecific identity of C. fragile from three other locations on the North Island, two locations on the South Island, and four locations on S.E. Australian shores; microscopic examination of utricles was used to check the predictions. Seasonality and number of fronds per thallus are the most reliable characters for field identification of native vs invasive subspecies: perennial intertidal thalli with large numbers of fronds are indicative of native subspecies for different geographic regions.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion rates were measured for Euphausia superba and E. crystallorophias captured under the pack-ice off Enderby Land, Antarctica, during November 1985. Water, ash, carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus composition were also determined. Compared with summer data, body composition of E. superba at this time of year was characterized by low carbon (40.2 to 40.7% of total dry wt), high nitrogen (11.8 to 12.0%), high phosphorus (1.2%) and high water (80.6 to 81.7% of total wet wt) content. Metabolic rates, expressed as percentage daily losses of body carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus were 1.3 to 1.6%, 0.38 to 0.42% and 1.9 to 2.2%, respectively; these fall within the ranges of summer data. E. superba fed on algae growing on the bottom of the ice, but body compositional features of this species suggest limited contribution of ice-algae to nutrition. Compared to E. superba, E. crystallorophias displayed greater metabolic rates and much higher body carbon content (40.9 to 45.0%), implying that feeding conditions under the ice were better suited to the requirements of E. crystallorophias. The only gravid females found belonged to E. crystallorophias.  相似文献

This study deals with meiofauna associated with a sublittoral population of the kelp Laminaria ochroleuca located on the northern coast of Spain. By sampling once a year over a 4-year period, we examined patterns of faunal distribution as a function of some environmental factors at the meso-scale level (depth, and exposure to waves and surge). We also examined the relationship between L. ochroleuca abundance (as dry weight biomass and number of plants per sampling quadrat) and abundance and diversity of meiofauna. Finally, we investigated patterns of within-plant distribution (algal frond vs. algal holdfast), using also the meiofauna of the adjacent bottom as a referent to estimate the level of "phytal dependence" of the meiofauna collected on L. ochroleuca. We found that the bulk of permanent meiofauna consisted of nematodes, copepods, mites, polychaetes, tanaids and ostracods, with copepods being predominant on the fronds of the alga and nematodes in the holdfasts. The temporary meiofauna consisted of juvenile amphipods, bivalves and gastropods, together with barnacle nauplii and cyprids. Abundance and major composition of meiofaunal taxa were unrelated to both depth and hydrodynamic exposure of the sampling quadrats. However, we detected significant qualitative and quantitative faunal differences as a function of microhabitat. All meiofaunal groups were more abundant in holdfast samples than in frond and bottom samples. The gross taxonomic composition of meiofauna in bottom samples was similar to that in holdfast samples, but substantially different from that of meiofauna associated with the fronds. The L. ochroleuca holdfasts, in which dense aggregations of meiofauna can occur, appear to function as ecotone between phytal and rocky-bottom microhabitats. All together, our results suggest that the distribution of meiofauna within the Laminaria bed is mostly affected by factors operating at the microhabitat level rather than the meso-scale level.Communicated by L. Humans are an important intertidal predator in central Chile. Following a five-year study we report on the effects of the exclusion of humans from the rocky intertidal at Las Cruces, central Chile. The middle intertidal of harvested and non-harvested areas diverged in species diversity and composition during the experiment. In harvested areas the middle intertidal rocky shore was dominated throughout the study by a monoculture of mussels, Perumytilus purpuratus. When humans were excluded, the middle intertidal community switched to one dominated by barnacles (predominantly Jehlius cirratus and Chthamalus scabrosus); this community has persisted for at least three years, despite the presence of forces e.g. mussel larvae, that have the potential to alter the community structure. Such changes were mediated by the muricid gastropod Concholepas concholepas, a key-stone predator. As a consequence of the above changes, the species diversity, H', (primary space occupiers) in the non-harvested area increased from H'=0 at the beginning of the study in 1983 (when the middle intertidal community was dominated by mussels), to values ca H'=2 toward the middle of the study in 1984 (which coincided with the maximum predatory impact of C. concholepas) and subsequently decreasing to ca H'=0.5 at the end of the study in 1987 (when the middle intertida community was dominated by barnacles). Please address all correspondence to J. Population biology ofMacrocystis integrifolia from British Columbia,Canada   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Aspects of the population dynamics ofMacrocystis integrifolia Bory were determined from harvested wild populations over a 26-month period and cultivated plants over a 40-month period. Mean wild plant size varied from 0.1 wet kg and two fronds in the winter to 3.1 wet kg and mine fronds in the summer. Plant recruitment probably occurred year-round with recruits making up 20 to 86% of the total population. Plant half-lives, estimated from population data, ranged from 1 to 3 months, with few plants exceedings 2 to 3 years in age. Standing crop ranged from 1.6 plants m-2 and 0.1 wet kg m-2 in winter to 8.3 plants m-2 and 8 wet kg m-2 in summer.  相似文献

A survey of translocation in laminariales (Phaeophyceae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A survey of translocation of photoassimilates in 13 genera of Laminariales is presented. All showed long-distance transport of 14C-labeled products from mature source tissue to meristematic sinks (haptera and intercalary growing regions). In plants with several laminae forming one frond, older laminae may provide assimilates for the growth of younger ones, and in Macrocystis spp., where fronds of different ages and developmental stage arise from a common holdfast, mature fronds initiate and support new fronds. Translocation velocities vary from species to species but are in the range of 55 to 570 mm/h. The results strongly support the hypothesis that Laminariales in general have an effective translocation system, on which their thallus growth depends.  相似文献

The abundance and vertical distribution pattern of a halocyprid ostracod,Conchoecia pseudodiscophora, were investigated in the Japan Sea in 1985, 1987 and 1989. Vertical sampling from 500 m depth to the surface in the water around Yamato Rise revealed that this ostracod was second in dominance by number and third to fourth by biomass of the total zooplankton collected with a 0.35 mm mesh Norpac net. Horizontal net tows in Toyama Bay indicated that the major population ofC. pseudodiscophora was distributed below 250 to 300 m depth. No diel migration pattern was evident. Its contribution to total zooplankton there was 5 to 10% or more in terms of biomass. A total of five subadult instars (II to VI) and adult males and females were identified from instar analysis based on sizes and morphological characteristics of specimens collected with 0.10 mm mesh Norpac nets. Data on body length, wet weight and dry weight of each instar are presented. Carbon content of 35 to 48% of dry weight, and nitrogen content of 5.3 to 7.3% of dry weight, were recorded on fresh, freeze-dried specimens of selected instars (subadult Instars IV to VI, adult females). Water and ash contents of mixed specimens of these four instars were 76% of wet weight and 25% of dry weight, respectively. Feasibility of laboratory maintenance ofC. pseudodiscophora was tested, and it produced characteristic J shaped faecal pellets. Oxygen consumption rates of subadult instars V and VI, and adult female ranged 0.011 to 0.021µl O2 ind.–1 h–1 at 1 °C, or 2.9 to 6.1µl O2 (mg body N)–0.85 h–1 in terms of Adjusted Metabolic Rate (AMRo 2). There was no appreciable metabolic reduction inC. pseudodiscophora compared to other ostracods, despite their mesopelagic life mode. Subdominance in total zooplankton and nonreduced metabolic activity ofC. pseudodiscophora suggest that this species may be an important link in mesopelagic energy-flow and matter cycling in the Japan Sea.  相似文献

Rates of oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion were measured on a hydromedusae (Aglantha digitale), pteropods (Limacia helicina, Clione limacina), copepods (Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus, Metridia longa), an amphipod (Parathemisto libellula), a euphausiid (Thysanoessa inermis) and a chaetognath (Sagitta elegans), all of which were dominant species in the Barents Sea during early summer 1987. Water and ash contents and elemental composition (C and N) were also analysed on the specimens used in these metabolic experiments. Between species variations were 67.8% to 94.7% of wet weight in water content, 6.4% to 56.5% of dry weight in ash content, 16.7% to 61.0% of dry weight in carbon content, and 4.3% to 11.2% of dry weight in nitrogen content. Oxygen consumption rates ranged from 0.33 to 13.8 l O2 individual-1 h-1, ammonia excretion rates, from 0.0072 to 0.885 gN individual-1 h-1 and phosphate excretion rates, from 0.0036 to 0.33 g P individual-1 h-1. In general, higher rates were associated with larger species, but considerable differences were also seen between species. The ratios between the rates (O : N, N : P, O : P) exhibited a wide species-specific variation, indicating differences in dominant metabolic substrates. Typical protein oriented metabolism was identified only in S. elegans. From the results of metabolic rate measurements and elemental analyses, daily losses of body carbon and nitrogen were estimated to be 0.50 to 4.15% and 0.084 to 1.87%, respectively, showing faster turnover rates of carbon than that of nitrogen. Comparison of daily loss of body carbon of the Barents Sea zooplankton with that of the Antarctic zooplankton indicated reduced rates of the former (63% on average).  相似文献

Concentrations and distributions of selected fluoroquinolones (norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin) in water, sediments and nine kinds of fish species collected from 6 sites in two marine aquaculture regions of the Pearl River Delta, China, were analyzed by using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detector (HPLC). The results showed that the concentrations of ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin were below the limits of quantification (LOQ) in all water samples except for norfloxacin. Norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin concentrations ranged from 1.88 to 11.20 ng g−1 dry wt, 0.76–2.42 ng g−1 dry wt in sediments collected from the Dapeng’ao region (sites 1–3) and ranged from 2.31 to 4.75 ng g−1 dry wt, 1.26–1.76 ng g−1 dry wt in sediments collected from the Hailing Island region (sites 4–6), respectively. However, no enrofloxacin was found in all sediment samples. The three fluoroquinolones (FQs) were detected in all fish samples, and the concentrations were higher in liver tissues than those in muscle tissues. The levels of norfloxacin were higher than ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin in both liver and muscle tissues. Among the nine marine fish species, Siganus fuscescens from Hailing Island had a significantly high level of norfloxacin in liver tissue (254.58 ng g−1 wet wt), followed by Sparus macrocephalus (133.15 ng g−1 wet wt) from Dapeng’ao, and the lowest value was Lutianus argentimaculatus (5.18 ng g−1 wet wt) from Hailing Island. The obtained results of FQs in present study do not represent a risk to the human health in Guangdong coastal area, based on the maximum residue limits (MRLs) established by Chinese Government and the acceptable daily intake (ADI) recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization (FAO/WHO).  相似文献

Regular daylight sampling over 13 mo (February 1985–February 1986) in and adjacent to intertidal forested areas, in small creeks and over accreting mudbanks in the mainstream of a small mangrove-lined estuary in tropical northeastern Queensland, Australia, yielded 112 481 fish from 128 species and 43 families. Species of the families Engraulidae, Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Clupeidae and Atherinidae were numerically dominant in the community. The same species, with the addition ofLates calcarifer (Latidae).Acanthopagrus berda (Sparidae) andLutjanus agentimaculatus (Lutjanidae) dominated total community biomass. During high-tide periods, intertidal forested areas were important habitats for juvenile and adult fish, with grand mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 3.5±2.4 fish m–3 and 10.9±4.5 g m–3, respectively. There was evidence of lower densities and less fish species using intertidal forests in the dry season (August, October), but high variances in catches masked any significant seasonality in mean fish biomass in this habitat. On ebb tides, most fish species (major families; Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Atherinidae, Melanotaeniidae) moved to small shallow creeks, where mean (±1 SE) low-tide density and biomass were 31.3±12.4 fish m–2 and 29.0±12.1 g m–2, respectively. Large variances in catch data masked any seasonality in densities and biomasses, but the mean number of species captured per netting in small creeks was lowest in the dry season (July, August). Species of Engraulidae and Clupeidae, which dominated high-tide catches in the forested areas during the wet season, appeared to move into the mainstream of the estuary on ebbing tides and were captured over accreting banks at low tide. Accreting banks supported a mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 0.4±0.1 fish m–2 and 1.7±0.3 g m–2, respectively, at low tide. There were marked seasonal shifts in fish community composition in the estuary, and catches in succeeding wet seasons were highly dissimilar. Comparison of fish species composition in this and three other mangrove estuaries in the region revealed significant geographic and temporal (seasonal) variation in fish-community structure. Modifications and removal of wetlands proposed for north Queensland may have a devastating effect on the valuable inshore fisheries of this region, because mangrove forests and creeks support high densities of fish, many of which are linked directly, or indirectly (via food chains) to existing commercial fisheries.Contribution No. 493 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Juvenile bass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.), fed ad libitum on trout pellets, the shore crab Carcinus maenas and filleted saithe, Gadus virens, did not differ significantly in proximate composition although the diets were absorbed with high efficiencies of 94 to 99% and differed greatly in composition. Compared with wild fish, the white muscle, dark muscle, liver and mesenteric fat bodies of laboratory-reared bass were lower in moisture and higher in lipid. Starvation caused a rapid initial decrease in carbohydrate and a progressive decline in lipid in all tissues, coupled with an increase in moisture and ash contents. The liver and fat body somatic indices also declined, indicating that these organs are the major lipid storage depots in bass, in contrast with the skeletal muscle which has this role in other active fishes such as salmonids and clupeids. Lipid and protein are inversely related to moisture content in whole specimens.  相似文献

Interactions between mercury and selenium accumulation and subcellular binding inAsterias rubens (L.), collected in 1987 from Lille Bælt at Middelfart, Funen, Denmark, were investigated in laboratory experiments. Sea stars exposed to 10µg Hg l–1 for 30 d accumulated mercury in body wall, tube feet and stomach linearly with time at 1.2, 1.2 and 0.5µg Hg g–1 dry wt d–1, respectively. Mercury was accumulated in pyloric caeca and coelomic fluid initially at 1.4µg Hg g–1 dry wt d–1 and 9.4 ng Hg ml–1 d–1, respectively; after 10 d uptake rates decreased. Sea stars exposed to 75µg Se-SeO 3 - - l–1 accumulated selenium linearly with time over 30 d in the stomach, pyloric caeca, tube feet and body wall at 2.0, 1.2, 1.2 and 0.6µg Se g–1 dry wt d–1. Sea stars exposed to 75µg Se-SeO 4 - - l–1 maintained selenium levels in the coelomic fluid at 75µg Se l–1 over 30 d. Exposure to selenate did not alter the selenium concentrations in the tissues. Sea stars exposed concurrently to 75µg Se-SeO 3 - - and 10µg Hg l–1 accumulated more mercury and selenium in tube feet and body wall than did sea stars exposed to the two elements alone. In pyloric caeca and stomach concurrent exposure reduced accumulation of both elements. Mercury was bound predominantly in the insoluble fraction of the tissues, and soluble mercury was bound in proteins of high (> 70 kilodaltons) or very low (< 6000 daltons) molecular weight. Ca. half of the selenium recovered was bound in the insoluble fraction, and soluble selenium was bound in proteins of high (> 70 kilodaltons) or very low (< 6000 daltons) molecular weight. Interaction between the two elements was exerted predominantly in the insoluble fraction of the tissues.  相似文献
