The morphology of the grooming limbs, the 5th pair of pereiopods, was studied by scanning electron microscopy in six species of porcellanid crabs, Petrolisthes cabrilloi, P. cinctipes, P. armatus, P. galathinus, Pachycheles monilifer, and Pachycheles rudis, and their function was inferred by comparison with findings from previous studies. Grooming limb morphology was almost identical among the four Petrolisthes species and differed little compared to that of the two Pachycheles species. The 5th pereiopods bore a basal tuft of mechanoreceptive setae, three different types of grooming setae armed with setules or denticles, two types of smooth sensilla for location and identification of fouling objects, and a terminal, toothed chela for picking firmly attached objects off the gills and body. The grooming limb was extremely flexible and could reach most parts of the body, including the gill chamber on the opposite side. The grooming limb morphology in Petrolisthes cabrilloi is consistent with its wellknown effectiveness in preventing parasitism by the rhizocephalan Lernaeodiscus porcellanae. Grooming setae remove recently attached cyprids, while the chela can grip and remove the much smaller, firmly attached kentrogons. Porcellanid crabs not known to host rhizocephalans, however, had grooming limbs almost identical to those of Petrolisthes cabrilloi despite their previously demonstrated failure to prevent settlement and infestation by L. porcellanae larvae. The effectiveness of P. cabrilloi in removing kentrogons, therefore, seems also to depend on behavioral adaptations whereby this species recognizes the parasite larvae as high-threat objects.  相似文献

Reproductive cycles of Afrocucumis africana (Dendrochirotida), Actinopyga echinites, Holothuria leucospilota, H. cinerascens, H. difficilis (Aspidochirotida), Synaptamaculata, Opheodesoma grisea, Patinapta taiwaniensis and Polycheira rufescens (Apodida), representing three orders of intertidal holothurians in southern Taiwan, were determined by gonad index and histological examination from March 1990 through September 1991. All nine species of holothurians have annual spawning periods lasting 2 to 4 mo in spring or summer. The early spawning of H. cinerascens and P. rufescens (suspension feeders) suggests that their feeding mode is related to food resources and may influence the reproductive period. In the direct-developing dendrochirotid (suspension feeder), gonad development occurs in cool months, and gametes are released at the beginning of warm months. In indirect-developing aspidochirotid and apodid (deposit feeder), gamete release occurs in late spring or summer and appears to be correlated with summer phytoplankton growth. The holothurians in the present study display spawning periodicity and duration similar to those of temperate species. Four species of holothurians lengthened spawning season with decreased latitude.  相似文献

Island populations are vulnerable to introduced pathogens, as evidenced by extinction or population decline of several endemic Hawaiian birds caused by the malaria parasite, Plasmodium relictum (order Haemosporida). We analyzed blood samples from 363 birds caught near Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, for the presence of haemosporidian infections. We characterized parasite lineages by determining nucleotide variation of the parasite's mitochondrial cyt b gene. Fifty‐nine individuals were infected, and we identified 7 lineages of haemosporidian parasites. Fifty individuals were infected by 6 Haemoproteus sp. lineages, including a newly characterized lineage of Haem. (Parahaemoproteus) sp. CUH01. Nine individuals carried the P. relictum lineage GRW4, including 5 endemic Cuban Grassquits (Tiaris canorus) and 1 migratory Cape May Warbler (Setophaga tigrina). A sequence of the merozoite surface protein gene from one Cuban Grassquit infected with GRW4 matched that of the Hawaiian haplotype Pr9. Our results indicate that resident and migratory Cuban birds are infected with a malaria lineage that has severely affected populations of several endemic Hawaiian birds. We suggest GRW4 may be associated with the lack of several bird species on Cuba that are ubiquitous elsewhere in the West Indies. From the standpoint of avian conservation in the Caribbean Basin, it will be important to determine the distribution of haemosporidian parasites, especially P. relictum GRW4, in Cuba as well as the pathogenicity of this lineage in species that occur and are absent from Cuba.  相似文献

On a sheltered upper eulittoral rocky shore at Aldabra Atoll, 5 cryptic, tropical holothurian species Afrocucumis africana (Semper), Holothuria (Selenkothuria) parva Krauss, Polycheira rufescens (Brandt), H. (Thymiosycia) impatiens (Forskaal) and H. (Mertensiothuria) leucospilota Brandt, in decreasing order of abundance, co-occurred on intact beach-rock, whereas the only ophiuroid Ophiocoma scolopendrina (Lamarck) lived mainly on rubble. The 3 commonest holothurian species (A. africana, H. parva and P. rufescens) utilized significantly different microhabitats. All 5 holothurian species differed appreciably in body size, gut contents and feeding behaviour. The differing holochurian body sized could be related to both particle size classes of the gut contents of these species and microhabitats occupied. The amount of suitable microhabitats is probably more important to the number and abundance of cryptic species than the amount of detrital food resources available. The echinoderm assemblage appeared to be stable over time.  相似文献

Populations of two chitons, Onithochiton quercinus (Gould, 1846) and Plaxiphora albida (Blainville, 1825) were sampled at five sites in the low-shore algal community at Cape Banks, New South Wales, Australia, from January 1985 to February 1988. Both species were abundant, reaching densities of 96 and 45 m-2, respectively and grew to 80 mm in length. O. quercinus and P. albida were found on the solitary ascidian Pyura stolonifera and on the substratum in amongst the foliose macroalgae which dominate this community. Size-frequency data were used to estimate the rates of growth, mortality and longevity, and time of recruitment. Growth of both species was rapid for the first 3 yr and slowed thereafter. O. quercinus and Plaxiphora albida had similar longevities and were estimated to live for at least 6 yr. Reproductive samples were also collected to identify when sexual maturity occurred, to clarify the reproductive periodicity, and to examine the sex ratios of the two species. Both species spawned over a discrete period in early autumn and there was no evidence of the bi-annual spawning reported in a previous study. Recruitment of O. quercinus and P. albida occurred during autumn, but recruits could not be quantified owing to their cryptic nature. The microhabitats occupied by the recruits of both species included the empty shells of the barnacle Austromegabalanus nigrescens, the spaces between the calcareous tubes of the polychaete Galeolaria caespitosa, and the space amongst the algae on Pyura stolonifera. Both species reached reproductive maturity at 2 yr of age. The sex ratios of both species were consistent with the results of a previous study: P. quercinus had a sex ratio of almost 2:1 biased in favour of males, and Plaxiphora albida exhibited a sex ratio of 1:1. The study suggested that populations of O. quercinus and P. albida could persist in the low-shore algal community in the absence of recruitment. This, together with their large size and consumption of macroalgae suggests that they have the potential to affect the structure and dynamics of this intertidal community.  相似文献

Megrim, Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis, and four spot megrim, Lepidorhombus boscii, are two marine fish species of high commercial interest. Despite their quite heavy exploitation little is known on the genetic structure of their populations. The present work aimed at characterizing the first seven microsatellites markers available for the two megrim species. These new markers were in a second step employed to describe the population structure of the two species among their almost entire habitat range (Atlantic and Mediterranean samples). Our study confirmed the existence of a strong genetic difference between Atlantic and Mediterranean megrim species already described in the literature for L. whiffiagonis on the basis of variations at ribosomal genes. Additionally our analysis gave the first evidences of a strong genetic differentiation among Atlantic populations in both megrim species (within Atlantic global FST in L. whiffiagonis and L. boscii were respectively 0.158 and 0.145). When describing megrim population structure, the comparison between allele-frequency-based tests (FST comparisons) and genotype-based inferences (Bayesian approach) gave evidences of a hierarchical structure of the populations. In conclusion, our work enlighten the existence of two different stocks within the Atlantic Ocean and one in the Mediterranean Sea that will clearly need to be managed separately. As the present results do not fully support the current megrim stock boundaries they will surely help to rethink megrim management policies in the future.  相似文献

This study devised a staging system for, and monitored, the gonad development of the limpet species Patella vulgata and Patella ulyssiponensis on the South West coast of Ireland using histological techniques. Maturation began in the males of both species in January and in the females it began in March. There was no statistical difference in gonad development between sexes and between species. Spawning in the male P. vulgata occurred from September to December 2003 and in September and October 2004. In female P. vulgata spawning occurred from October to December 2003, no spawning of females was observed in 2004. In male P. ulyssiponensis spawning occurred in November and December 2003 and from September 2004 to December 2004. Spawning was observed from November 2003 to January 2004 and in September 2004 in female P. ulyssiponensis. Sex ratios also varied between the species and between months sampled. Nevertheless more males were observed in both species.  相似文献

Chemical fingerprinting techniques recently have been used to track larval dispersal of estuarine species that bear calcified structures, but the applicability of this important approach may be limited on the open coast where chemical signatures may be less distinctive and for the many species that do not retain calcified structures throughout development. Externally brooded embryos of the porcelain crab, Petrolisthes cinctipes, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were used to determine whether fine-scale variation in trace-elemental composition occurred along an open coast. Embryos were collected from 16 sites from 37.8° to 39.5° north latitude along the Pacific Coast of California, USA during late January and early February 2003. Discriminant function analysis revealed that collection sites, many separated by only a few kilometers along an open coast, could be differentiated with an overall accuracy of 73%, and combining the sites into three regions increased the accuracy to 88%. Thus, distinctive elemental signatures can be detected in open coast species even at a fine scale raising the possibility that larval tags can be developed for many more species than previously thought possible.  相似文献

Bonamia ostreae is a protozoan parasite of the native oyster, Ostrea edulis. The parasite can be transmitted directly from infected to uninfected oysters. Though direct transmission of the parasite can occur between oysters it is unclear if this represents the complete life cycle of the parasite, and the involvement of a carrier/reservoir cannot be ruled out. A survey of benthic macroinvertebrate and zooplankton survey was carried out in the North Channel, Cork Harbour, Ireland, an area where B. ostreae is endemic and the parasite has been present since the 1980s. This was compared to several European surveys of benthic macroinvertebrate and zooplankton species found in other B. ostreae endemic areas. The objective was to identify any species that were common to these sites and could act as possible carrier/reservoir hosts for the pathogen. Species that were found to be common in two or more sites were included in two comparison tables. These species will be targeted in future studies investigating the possible role of macroinvertebrates and zooplankton in the complete life cycle of B. ostreae.  相似文献

The temporal occurrence of parasites in Sagitta setosa J. Müller, caught one to three times a month during 1982 and 1983 off Plymouth, England, was investigated. S. setosa was infected by eight parasitic species: one nematode, five trematodes, one cestode and, possibly, one protozoon. Infection by a single parasite, normally found in the body coelom, was the rule. The nematode Hysterothylacium aduncum, as III-stage larva, was by far the most common parasite (56% of all parasites found), followed by the metacercariae of three non-encysted trematodes: Derogenes varicus, a didymozoid species and a Lecithochirium species. Two trematode species new to Chaetognatha were found. The percentage of infected S. setosa specimens ranged from 0 to 7%. Absence or low numbers of parasites from June to November were correlated to the disappearance of large S. setosa and the appearance of a new S. setosa generation. Trematodes may show great annual and seasonal differences in occurrence in S. setosa. No injuries due to parasites were seen. The reproduction of the S. setosa populations off Plymouth did not seem to be affected by parasite infections during 1982–1983.  相似文献

The species and distribution of nematodes on the kelp Macrocystic integrifolia Bory, in the Bamfield region of Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada were examined. Nine species (belonging to six families) of nematodes were found on the kelp blades. Three species (Monhystera disjuncta, M. refringens and Prochromadorella neapolitana) comprised 91–99% of the nematode fauna and occurred in all monthly samples from July 1978 to November 1979. The three dominant species exhibited seasonal density differences. P. neapolitana occurred mostly in the summer, M. refringens abundance peaked from July to October and M. disjuncta was relatively abundant throughout the year. The other species contributed little to the overall abundance and distribution patterns. All three species occurred in greatest abundance on the lower and middle blades of M. integrifolia in the deep end of the kelp bed. Very few individuals occurred on the upper blades. Nematode distribution on M. integrifolia appeared to be related to blade age and the associated food sources on the blade.  相似文献

The reproductive cycles and abundance of the sympatric colonial ascidians Pycnoclavella brava, Pycnoclavella aurilucens and Pycnoclavella communis from two Northwestern Mediterranean sites over a period of 2.5 years are reported. The species showed some differences in their biological patterns. Gonad maturation and larval brooding took place during autumn and early winter for P. communis, during spring for P. aurilucens and during late winter and spring for P. brava. Summer was found to be the unfavorable season for all species, and an aestivation period occurred in P. communis and P. brava. Maximum abundance for the three species was observed during winter. Growth rates of the most abundant species, P. communis, were also monitored and found to peak during the initial phases of reactivation after aestivation. Growth rates decreased afterwards, becoming negative as water temperature started to increase after the winter minima. Reproductive activity and growth rates for P. communis displayed a temporal lag that suggested partitioning of resources to either reproduction or growth in this species.  相似文献

Two species of seed-eating true bugs, Neacoryphus bicrucis (Heteroptera: Lygaeidae) and Margus obscurator (Heteroptera: Coreidae) co-occur on ragwort, Senecio tomentosus, in southern Georgia, USA. Males of both species sometimes engage in chases and protracted grappling with females that flee initial mountings. Sometimes genital coupling occurs while the wriggling female is restrained in the male's grasp. Chases, grappling, and mounting attempts are misdirected toward heterospecific females, heterospecific males, or conspecific males. In a laboratory study, confinement of mated N. bicrucis females with either conspecific or heterospecific males reduced fecundity by approximately one-half relative to mated females confined only with other females. Perhaps as a consequence of this, N. bicrucis females frequently leave areas of high host plant density, where they prefer to oviposit, when males are abundant. The abundance of each species is positively correlated with host plant density but the two species rarely occur together on the same plants. This may be an effect of heterospecific courtship which induces the flight of N. bicrucis more than the flight of M. obscurator. The laboratory results suggest that copulations following chases and grappling represent sexual harassment, not a mechanism of active female choice for a vigorous mate. As sexual harassment imposes high fitness costs that favor abandonment of host plants, it may, when misdirected, incidentally limit habitat use by ecologically similar species.  For three spider crabs (Tiarinia cornigera, Micippaplatipes and Pugettia quadridens quadridens), patterns of algal utilization for decorating were compared with the dynamics of algae on an intertidal rocky shore reef where the crabs co-occurred. T. cornigera and P. quadridens quadridens were most abundant from autumn to spring when the dominant algae (Boodleacoacta, Sargassum hemiphyllum, S. thunbergii and Corallina pilulifera) occurred in high coverage, while M. platipes was most abundant from spring to autumn. Monthly change of algae used for decorating was not correlated with algae growing in the crab habitat for T. cornigera, but for M. platipes, it was positively correlated for two algal species, and for P. quadridens quadridens, negatively correlated for one algal species. Each species of the spider crabs used some algal species preferentially for decoration. Decorating preference experiments conducted in the laboratory showed that M. platipes and P. quadridens quadridens exhibited similar preference to their algal utilization in the field, whereas for T. cornigera, algal preference in the experiment differed from utilization in the field. Comparisons between materials used for decoration and gut contents revealed that T. cornigera and M. platipes used algal species differently for decorating and feeding, while P. quadridens quadridens used the same algal species for both decorating and feeding. Different tactics for camouflage are discussed in terms of algal utilizations by the three majid species. Received: 25 September 1999 / Accepted: 22 June 2000  相似文献

We investigated whether female association preferences for males are influenced by black spot disease (BSD), a parasite induced change of the host phenotype. We compared three different species of fish: a gynogenetic hybrid species, Poecilia formosa (amazon molly) and two sexual species (Poecilia latipinna and Poecilia mexicana), which were involved in the natural hybridisation leading to the amazon molly. Contrary to their sexual relatives, asexual amazon mollies significantly avoided images of males infected with black spot disease. We propose that amazon molly females have direct fitness benefits from choosing healthy males. The adaptive significance of the preference for BSD-uninfected males in the asexual amazon molly is yet unclear but may involve avoidance of predation or parasite infection as well as increased sperm availability.  相似文献

The distribution of total dry weight of zooplankton, copepod numbers and ichthyoplankton across the outer continental shelf in the central Great Barrier Reef was examined at bi-weekly intervals for three months over summer of 1983. Copepods were sampled (236 m net) within 10 m of the surface and within 10 m of the bottom. Mean densities in surface waters decreased markedly from the mid-shelf to outer shelf and the Coral Sea, but no cross-shelf gradient occurred in the bottom-water. Densities of copepods on the mid-shelf (surface and bottom waters) and in bottom-waters of the outer shelf were typically ca. 400 m–3. Significantly lower densities (ca. 100 m–3) occurred in surface waters of the outer shelf, except during outbursts of Acartia australis, when densities in these waters differed little from those elsewhere on the shelf. In oceanic waters, 10 km from the outer shelf station, copepod densities in surface waters were ca. 40 m–3. Four of the five most abundant copepod taxa in surface waters, Paracalanus spp., Eucalanus crassus, Acrocalanus gracilis and Canthocalanus pauper, tended to be most abundant at the mid-shelf end of the transect. Acartia australis was sporadically very abundant in surface waters of the outer shelf, as was Paracalanus spp. in bottom-water of the outer shelf. An assemblage of Coral Sea species of copepod occurred in bottom-water of the outer shelf during two major intrusions, but not at other times. Densities of all common species varied considerably between cruises. Maximum densities of all common species except A. australis tended to be associated with diatom blooms linked to intrusions but a bloom did not necessarily mean all common species were abundant. Fish larvae included both reef and non-reef taxa, with reef taxa predominating on the outer shelf (approx 2:1 in density of individuals) and non-reef taxa dominating in nearshore samples (approx 2:1). Nine of the ten most abundant taxa analysed showed highly significant variation in numbers among stations and all but one of these also exhibited significant station x cruise interactions. Interactions generally reflected changes in the rank importance of adjacent stations from one cruise to the next or lack of any significant cross-shelf variation on some cruises where overall abundance of the taxa was low.  相似文献

The microphytoplankton assemblages were studied from water samples collected at eight discrete depths in the top 120 m at five central (open ocean) and four western (shelf/slope region) locations in the Bay of Bengal. The Bay is a low-productive warm pool regime with poor inorganic nutrient inputs to its intensely stratified surface layer despite the very large riverine influx. In addition, the prolonged cloud cover has an adverse effect on the top 25–40 m, on primary production, chlorophyll concentration and phytoplankton assemblages. Microphytoplankton were the most abundant in the northern area of the Bay. A total of 153 phytoplankton species were identified during this study. The most abundant species (at least 1,800 individual cells belonging to a given species or ≥2% of the total counts of identified specimens) during this study were: Thalassiothrix longissima, Thalassiothrix fauenfeldii, Rhizosolenia styliformis, Nitzschia angularis, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Coscinodiscus radiatus, Chaetoceros eibenii, Skeletonema costatum, Coscinodiscus concinnus and Chaetoceros coarctatus. Similarly, there were 20 moderately abundant (≥0.5 but <2%) species. Thirty-three of the least abundant species (<0.5%) occurred at one station. Diatom species, T. fauenfeldii and T. longissima were ubiquitous in the study area. The exclusive occurrence of S. costatum in the northernmost stations suggests that it proliferates only in the low-salinity regions with adequate silica from the land inputs. Abundance of pennate diatoms was higher in the open Bay compared to that of centric diatoms in the more productive northern locations and the western Bay. There appears to be a basic difference between near shore flora and offshore flora. This first analysis of phytoplankton assemblages from the offshore Bay suggests that while there is predominance of only a few species, the Bay harbors very diverse diatom communities that seem to be syntrophic, non-competitive and co-habiting in the generally low nutrient, stratified surface waters.  相似文献

It is suggested that novel nuisance algal blooms can result from major shifts in N/P or NH4 +/NO3 - ratios. Inland hydraulic engineering caused a shift from P-limitation (before 1977) towards N-limitation (after 1977) in the Marsdiep area (Dutch coastal waters). Following this shift the colonial flagellate Phaeocystis sp. became more abundant and started to bloom during the nutrient-controlled period (later spring to autumn). Competition experiments showed that the N/P ratio can influence the species composition of marine phytoplankton. In addition, the natural distribution of some species like Rhodomonas sp. and Emiliania huxleyi may be affected by the frequency of nutrient pulses in the system. Phaeocystis was a poor competitor under P-limitation and a good competitor under N-limitation. Colony formation was absent under P- and NH4 +-limitation. Colonies were formed under NO3 --limitation. These preliminary results suggest that colony-forming Phaeocystic blooms may be restricted (besides light-controlled environments) to those N-controlled environments where nitrate is consumed by Phaeocystis. The distribution of Phaeocystis along the European continental coast is evaluated on the basis of its ability to compete for nutrients and to form colonies when nitrate is the major N-source.  相似文献

Social parasites exploit the behaviours of other social species. Infiltration of host systems involves a variety of mechanisms depending on the conditions within the host society and the needs of the social parasite. For many species of socially parasitic ants, colony establishment entails the usurpation of colonies of other species. This frequently involves the eviction or death of the host colony queen and the subsequent adoption of the invading queen. The social parasite queen achieves host worker acceptance by either manipulating the nest-mate recognition processes of the host or undergoing chemical modification. Little is known, however, about how host workers respond to social parasite eggs or whether host species defend against brood parasitism during parasite invasions. Host species are believed to adopt social parasite offspring because the recent common ancestry between many social parasites and their hosts may grant the sharing of certain characteristics such as chemical cues. Use of multiple host species, however, suggests other processes are needed for the social bond between host and parasite young to form. This study reports the findings of adoption bioassays in which eggs from a slave-maker ant, Polyergus breviceps, were offered to workers of two of its host species from unparasitised or newly parasitised nests to determine whether P. breviceps eggs generally elicit rearing behaviours from multiple host species. Comparisons of parasite egg survival until adulthood with conspecific egg survival reveal that workers of both host species, free-living or newly enslaved, do not typically accept slave-maker eggs. Both host species thus have sufficient discriminatory power to reject social parasite eggs although our hydrocarbon analysis indicates parasite eggs may be adapted to their local host species. Combined these results suggest that host rearing of P. breviceps eggs may reflect an evolutionary equilibrium that is maintained by probability and cost of recognition errors.Communicated by L. Epifaunal crustaceans on turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) and five dominant macroalgae (Anadyomene stellata, Digenia simplex, Halimeda incrassata, Laurencia poitei and Penicillus lamourouxii) were quantitatively sampled bimonthly over a one-year period from September 1979 to September 1980 in a subtropical seagrass meadow in Apalachee Bay, Florida (northeastern Gulf of Mexico). These plant species exhibited a wide range of morphologies, with surface area-to-biomass ratios differing by over 2.5 times. A similar suite of crustaceans occurred on all macrophytes despite differences in shape or architecture among plant species. Relative abundances of many crustaceans, however, varied among plant hosts. Similarity analysis indicated that the epifaunal associates of T. testudinum were distinct from those of the macroalgae. Species richness was generally higher on turtlegrass than on any of the macroalgae. Abundances of total crustaceans per plant biomass or per plant surface area, on the other hand, were greater on all macroalgal species compared to the seagrass. Abundances (per plant biomass or plant surface area) of 14 of the 16 numerically dominant epifaunal species differed significantly among macrophytes. Twelve of the 16 species had greater abundance on one or more macroalgae, while only two species were more abundant on T. testudinum. Almost half of the dominant species had greatest abundances on the branching red alga L. poitei. Although abundances per plant biomass and plant surface area were greater on macroalgae relative to turtlegrass, densities (individuals per meter square of bottom) of animals associated with T. testudinum were significantly greater than those associated with macroalgae, primarily because of the greater abundance of turtlegrass in the grass bed. Both surface area-to-biomass ratios and degree of branching were poorly correlated with epifaunal abundance and number of species. Neither structural feature is an adequate predictor of faunal abundance and species richness among plant species, especially when macrophytes with very different morphologies are compared.  相似文献
