The effect of light intensity on rate of photosynthesis was measured at irregular intervals over a 12-month period for 22 benthic marine algae in the western Baltic Sea. In most species photosynthesis (mg O2·g dry weight-1·h-1) was highest in spring and summer, corresponding to the seasonal growth pattern of the algae. In winter all the species showed adaptation of the light compensation point. Highest productivity was shown by algae which are: short-lived annual species rather than perennials, eulittoral rather than sublittoral, and which possess sheet-like or filamentous thalli rather than coarsely branched forms. These factors are clearly inter-related.This research was carried out while one of us (R.J.K.) was an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the University of Kiel, and is part of the programme Sonderforschungsbereich 95, Wechselwirkung Meer-Meeresboden, Universität Kiel.  相似文献

Benthic bacterial production and biomass were measured at 16 stations in the North Sea covering a wide range of sediment types from the Southern Bight and the English coast to the Skagerrak. Stations were sampled in August 1991 and February 1992. The best predictor for summer/winter and spatial variations in benthic bacterial production in North Sea sediments was temperature. In winter the ranges in temperature were too small to account for the spatial variations in benthic bacterial production. The direct effect of temperature alone on bacterial production could not explain the variations. The apparent Q10-values derived from the relations between bacterial growth and temperature exceeded the range in Q10-values generally accepted for bacterial growth (between 2 and 3). Temperature was assumed to covary closely with substrate availability for bacteria. Due to its significant seasonality phytopigment content of the sediment (chlorophyll a and pheopigment) was found to be a better indicator of substrate availability than sediment organic matter, which did not demonstrate seasonality. Temperature and phytopigment accounted for up to 88% of the seasonal and spatial variations in bacterial production. The significant relations between bacterial production and biomass in summer coinciding with significant relations between bacterial biomass and phytopigments suggest that variations in phytopigments in the sediment may be indicators of the variability of labile components regulating bacterial production in sediments.  相似文献

The diurnal variation in apical length growth rate of five benthic macroalgae from the Swedish West Coast (Fucus spiralis L., F. vesiculosus L., F. serratus L., Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis, and Chondrus crispus Stackhouse) was measured during 1.5 to 2.0-h intervals for 3 to 5 d in September 1984. All species showed a maximum in growth rate in the morning, followed by a continuous decline throughout the rest of the day (most pronounced in F. serratus, A. nodosum and C. crispus). By comparing the growth rates with the average irradiance during the same interval, saturation irradiances for length growth in natural daylight regime were estimated; 60 to 70 Wm-2 for F. spiralis and F. vesiculosus, 90 to 100 Wm-2 for A. nodosum, 30 to 40 Wm-2 for F. serratus and 10 to 20 Wm-2 for C. crispus. Average growth rates during the dark hours ranged from 33% of average day growth rates in A. nodosum to 63% in C. crispus, respectively.  相似文献

Phytoplankton growth dynamics were investigated throughout the photic zone at three stations in the North Central Pacific Gyre south of the Hawaiian Islands. Ambient nutrients, vertical light profiles, phytoplankton biomass, and primary production were measured. Photosynthetically active radiation, measured with a submarine quantaspectrophotometer, illustrates vertical variations in photic spectral quality and is presented as incident quanta flux of visible light. Primary production was determined throughout the photic zone under conditions where the samples were collected, injected with 14C, and incubated under entirely in situ conditions to eliminate preincubation perturbation and to ensure representative response to both light quality and quantity. Oceanic phytoplankton activity is described as a continuous function of incident light under the prevailing low nutrient conditions, and the important rate constants are calculated based upon field data from oligotrophic regions. The vertical profiles of phytoplankton activity and incident quanta flux are analyzed in terms of a substrate-limited system according to the equqtion A (z) = A max (q ((z)q o) [K + (q ((z)) – q (o], where q(z) is the quanta flux at a given depth, and A(z) is the phytoplankton assimilation number at that depth. This is done on the rationale that systematically declining levels of quanta flux, vertically, represent corresponding declines in the availability of substrate for the photochemical processes of photosynthesis. Comparison of data from isolated oceanic regions with those from a station located 15 miles off Oahu show that although large differences in the phytoplankton parameters are evident throughout the entire photic zones of these regions, the hyperbolic A(z)-q(z) relationship describes the data fairly well in both cases. The comparison suggests that this relationship may apply to the general case of an oligotrophic water column. These experiments show trends which may be useful for diagnosing phytoplankton activity in the field where N and P levels are low.Oceanic Institute Contribution No. 77-131.  相似文献

As interest grows in the quantification of global carbon cycles, Light Use Efficiency (LUE) model predictions of the forest net primary production (NPP) are being developed at an accelerating rate. Such models can provide useful predictions at large scales, but evaluating their performance has been difficult. In this study, a remote sensing-based LUE model was established to estimate forest NPP. Using the forest inventory data (FID) from the regional forest inventory survey in China and established allometric biomass equations, we calculated the biomass, the biomass increment, and the NPP of Eucalyptus urophylla (E. urophylla) plantation plots in the forestry jurisdiction of the Leizhou Forestry Bureau, Southern China. The FID-based NPP and the NPP from LUE model predictions were then compared to each other. Results show that the NPP from model predictions at a spatial resolution of 30 m × 30 m varied from 0 to 265 gC/(m2 month) and showed regional differences. In addition, the stand age had variable effects on the average individual biomass of the E. urophylla plantation plots. The average individual biomass of the young and mid-age forests increased exponentially and logarithmically with the stand age (R2 = 0.9178 and R2 = 0.8683), respectively. For young and mid-age E. urophylla plantation plots, the LUE model-predicted NPP was fairly consistent with the FID-based NPP, but the model predictions of the NPP were higher than the estimates from FID. Through the analysis of the causes of uncertainty and the possible reasons for the discrepancy between the model-based NPP and FID-based NPP, the FID-derived estimates provided a foundation for model evaluation.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted in 1984 to test for an interaction between irradiance and temperature in controlling sporophyte production in the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera. Gametophytes from plants in the San Onofre kelp forest were cultured under a combination of seven irradiance (2.9 to 30 E m-2 s-1) and ten temperature (11° to 20°C) levels. The minimum daily quantum dose for fertility of female gametophytes during the 42 d culture-period was 0.25 E m-2 d-1. The saturation quantum dose was approximately 0.60 E m-2 d-1. Temperatures between 11° and 20°C had little effect on the fertilityirradiance relationship, except at irradiations near the threshold and saturation levels. Cultures at 0.60 E m-2 d-1 had significantly lower fertility after 6 wk at 20°C than at the lower temperatures and there was a trend toward lower fertility at temperatures greater than 15°C in cultures at 0.25 E m-2 d-1. These differences were also reflected in the development time for female gametophytes. The 11°C cultures reached 50% fertility slightly faster and the 20°C cultures slower than cultures at intermediate temperatures.  相似文献

Effects of diurnal variation in phytoplankton photosynthesis on estimating daily primary production (DPP) were examined using field data from Sagami Bay, Japan. DPP at 5 m depth was calculated from the continuous data of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and light intensity monitored by a natural fluorescence sensor with and without considering time-dependent changes in the photosynthesis–irradiance (P–E) relationship. Chl a could be estimated from natural fluorescence examining the variations in the quantum yield of fluorescence (φ f) and Chl a-specific light absorption coefficient (a*ph), and relating them to Chl a. The P–E relationship was determined by water sampling three times daily. A distinct diurnal pattern was observed for the maximum photosynthetic rate (P*max), being maximal at noon, while periodicity of the maximum light utilization coefficient (α*) was less obvious. The actual DPP was calculated by interpolating the P–E parameters from those obtained at dawn, noon, and dusk. For comparison, DPP was calculated by fixing the P–E parameters as the constants measured at dawn, noon or dusk for a day. The difference from the actual DPP was small when the P–E parameters measured at dawn (3% on average) and noon (5%) were used as the constants for a day. The difference was largest when the values at dusk were used (−43%). The medium values of P*max at dawn, its low values at dusk, and the fact that a major part of the DPP was produced around noon were responsible for these results. The present study demonstrates that measurement of the P–E parameters at dawn or noon can give a good estimation of DPP from natural fluorescence.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and migration (seasonal, diel and ontogenetic) of Calanus helgolandicus are described from the shallow (100 m) shelf-seas to the south-west of the British Isles. In 1978 and 1979, the overwintering population of C. helgolandicus consisted primarily of Stage V copepodites and adults. By late winter/early spring the copepodites had moulted to adult females (>90%), which matured and bred the first cohorts of the year, prior to onset of the spring phytoplankton bloom in April/May. C. helgolandicus reached a peak of numerical abundance in August of 20x103 copepodites m-2 (over the depth range sampled -0 to 70 m), which was 200 times the population in winter. The seasonal peak of abundance occurred 4 mo after the peak of the bloom of phytoplankton in spring. The yearly development of the copepod was not always out of phase with the diatom bloom, as seen when the data from 1978 was placed in the context of a longer time-series collected at 10 m over 22 yr (1960–1981, inclusive). Large vertical migrations were observed in the younger copepodites (CI and II) in May from below to above the thermocline. In the remainder of the year, the CI and CII stages behaved differently and were located above the thermocline within the euphotic zone. The largest vertical displacements of biomass were seen in the summer months due to the migrations of the CV stages and adults, which had developed from the spring cohorts. It was contended that the seasonal and vertical migrations of C. helgolandicus are part of a more complex pattern of inherent behavior than has been reported previously and that, however difficult this is to discern in the natural populations, it always expresses itself.  相似文献

In-situ measurements of benthic community respiration and primary production on an intertidal sandflat in Nova Scotia, Canada were used to test the hypothesis that community responses to light and temperature were similar within and between seasons. Multiple regression indicated that mean incubation temperature explained 57% of the variance in total sediment oxygen demand (TOD). The logarithmic relationship between TOD and temperature (Q10=6.5) was not significantly different between fall and spring, suggesting no acclimation within season. Chemical oxygen demand measured in formalin-poisoned cores averaged 30% of TOD. Microalgal gross primary production (GROSS) was measured as oxygen production in light cores. Mean incubation temperature and sediment chlorophylla explained 56% of the variance. The linear relationship between GROSS and temperature had Q10=2.0. When production was normalized to chlorophylla [GROSS(SP)], seasonal production-temperature curves were significantly different. The spring curve had Q10=3.3; in the fall, production and temperature were not related. GROSS(SP)-light curves derived from Plexiglas shade experiments in the field were linear and not significantly different between fall and spring. Temperature alone was a better predictor of GROSS(SP) than light, even when P/I curves were adjusted for temperature. One can therefore model community respiration and photosynthesis at this site using daily averages in temperature, which are then summed over longer time scales to estimate monthly or seasonal rates.  相似文献

The problem of vertical distribution and the movements of copepods was studied from several plankton samples collected by vertical hauls in the Saronic Bay, Greece during two cruises (8 to 17 August and 21 November to 1 December, 1969). The species, whose vertical movements were analyzed, were divided into 3 groups: (1) Those which perform diurnal vertical migration (generally psychrophilic species found in summer samples in deeper layers and in reduced numbers). In autumn, the number of specimens is generally increased and many individuals reach the surface at night. From surface hauls it is known that these species abound in night surface hauls during the cold period. (2) Those species which execute a seasonal vertical migration. These, too are, in general, psychrophilic and found in summer in the deep water layers. In autumn, the population of the upper layers increases. From surface hauls it is known that these species abound in day and night surface samples. (3) Copepods which remained at the surface layer in both seasons of our cruises. These species are thermophilic and are absent from surface hauls during the cold period.

Four typical coastal sites (rocky shore, sandy shore, mud flat shore, and artificial harbor) at the Yellow Sea were chosen to investigate the spatial and seasonal variations in bacterial communities. This was accomplished by using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of PCR amplified 16S rDNA fragments. Two kinds of tetrameric restriction enzymes, HhaI and MspI, were used in the experiment to depict the bacterial community diversity in different marine environments. It was found that the community compositions digested by the two enzymes separately were different. However, the results of bacterial community diversity derived from them were similar. The MDA analysis results of T-RFLP profiles coming from HhaI and MspI both exhibited a significant seasonal community shift for bacteria and a relatively low spatial variation among the four locations. With HhaI as the sample, the pair wise T-tests also revealed that variations were minor between each pair of marine environments, with R ranging from 0.198 to 0.349. However, the bacterial community structure in the mud flat site depicted a larger difference than each of the other three sites (R ranging from 0.282 to 0.349).  相似文献

The phytoplankton was assessed quantitatively and qualitatively in regard to their abundance in creek waters at three sites along the western mangrove of Kachchh. In total one hundred and four species of phytoplankton were identified. Among them 82 species diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), 16 species dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae), 3 species blue greens (Cyanophyceae) and 2 species were green algae. The density in all the three sites varied from 94,166.67 to 2,44,500 cells l(-1). The salinity ranged from 36 to 44 per thousand, temperature 17 to 35 degrees C and pH ranged from 7 to 8.9 respectively. These semi arid zone mangrove creek area having high densities were recorded during monsoon and early winter season.  相似文献

The suggestion that the annual cycle of plant production in tropical oceanic regions may be negligible or non-existent is examined, using data from a year-long cruise series in the eastern tropical Pacific. Results of analysis of variance show a highly significant seasonal effect. Average values of the seasonal cycle were found to range from 127 to 318 mg C/m2/day, a systematic two-fold variation over the year. Annual production was 75 g C/m2/year. Significant differences also were found between longitudes, and a slightly significant interaction occurred between season and longitude. Probable sources of the seasonal cycle include time variation of thermocline topography and variation of nutrient supply from local source areas such as the Costa Rica Dome, Gulf of Tehuantepec, Peru Current extension, and Equatorial Undercurrent domain.  相似文献

Parameters of photosynthesis and growth were measured for a marine diatom (Lauderia borealis) grown in axenic continuous culture under three different light regimes: constant, simulated diurnal variation, and fluctuating. The light fluctuations were systematic increases and decreases in light intensity superimposed on the diurnal regime. In the first two regimes, a morning maximum and an afternoon depression in photosynthesis were observed. In the fluctuating light regime, the afternoon depression was less pronounced and the morning maximum was enhanced. The results may be explained by postulating a time-dependent value for the light-saturated rate of photosynthesis. Light utilization [mmol O2 cell-1 (E m-2)-1] was the same for the diurnally varying and fluctuating regimes, despite the fact that the peak light intensity in the fluctuating regime was double that of the diurnally varying regime.  相似文献

We studied the condition of stoplight parrot-fish, Sparisoma viride, collected from the fringing reef of Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles) between March 1987 and October 1991. To this end, we compared length-weight relationships using analysis of covariance. The condition of different life phases [juveniles, initial phase (IP) and terminal phase (TP) adults] and social categories (territorial and group adults) is compared in different seasons, taking into account spatial variability along a depth gradient. Variations in condition are related to differences in behaviour, the use of space and the distribution of food. The average length-weight relationship of fish with empty guits is described by the equation: W Empty=9.115x10-6xFL 3.140 (n=386, R2=99.82%, W in g, FL in mm). Territorial TP males were found to be in poorest condition, whereas (sexually inactive) group TP showed the best and IP fish an intermediate condition. These differences are ascribed to varying investments in territory defence and reproduction, which affect condition more than the vertical distribution of food. All categories were in minimum condition between May and July, the season with longest day lengths and increasing water temperatures. This seasonal effect cannot be ascribed to increased reproductive effort and suggests that the higher energetic demands due to the longer active period of fish are not completely met by increased food uptake. It is inferred that food may be a limiting factor at times.  相似文献

The animal-habitat relationships and seasonal dynamics of the benthic macroinfauna were investigated from November 1986 to October 1988 in the Great Sippe-wissett salt marsh (Massachusetts, USA). Total macrofaunal abundance varied seasonally, displaying a peak in late spring and early summer, then declining sharply during late summer and recovering briefly in fall before collapsing in winter. Three macroinfaunal assemblages were found in the marsh, distributed along gradients of environmental factors. These included a sandy non-organic sediment assemblage, a sandy organic sediment assemblage and a muddy sediment assemblage. The species groups characteristic of unstable sandy non-organic sediments included the polychaetes Leitoscoloplos fragilis, Aricidea jefreyssi, Magelona rosea and Streptosyllis verrilli, the oligochaete Paranais litoralis, and the crustacean Acanthohaustorius millsi. Sandy organic sediments were characterized by the polychaetes Marenzelleria viridis, Capitella capitata, Neanthes succinea, N. arenaceodonta, Polydora ligni and Heteromastus filiformis, the oligochaete Lumbricillus sp., and the mollusc Gemma gemma. In muddy sites, the polychaete Streblospio benedicti and the oligochaetes Paranais litoralis and Monopylephorus evertus were the dominant species. Secondary production of benthic macroinfauna in each of these habitats was estimated. The highest values of biomass and production were recorded in the sandy organic sediments. Secondary production was estimated to be 1850 kJ m-2 yr-1 in sandy organic areas, but only 281 kJ m-2 yr-1 in sandy non-organic areas and 113 kJ m-2 yr-1 in muddy areas. This results in an area-weighted average production of 505 kJ m-2 yr-1 for the unvegetated areas of the marsh. The Great Sippewissett salt marsh has an area of 483800 m2, the total secondary production of the macroinfauna for the whole unvegetated area of the marsh was estimated as 4651 kg dry wt yr-1, expressed as somatic growth. This production value seems consistent with production data obtained for other intertidal North Atlantic environments.  相似文献

Daily light intensities (I o) can vary 10-fold during the winter-spring and late-summer diatom blooms in New England, USA, coastal waters. Laboratory cultures and natural populations incubated in dialysis sacs were examined to determine the time course of growth rate in Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve in response to variations in daily light intensity during two bloom periods in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. Log-phase cultures of S. costatum require 2 d to attain maximum growth rates at 2°C following transfer to saturating intensities. At 20°C, only 1 d is required. As temperature increases, Detonula confervacea (Cleve) Gran, Thalassiosira nordenskiöldii Cleve and Ditylum brightwellii (West) Grunow also exhibit rapid increases in mean daily division rates (K) following transfer to saturating light intensities. Thalassiosira pseudonana Hustedt, however, did not alter the time required to achieve maximum K as temperature varied. Natural populations of S. costatum did not show a well-defined relationship between K and light. Throughout a winterspring bloom, K was limited by low temperatures and exhibited no clear response to variations in I o. A change in K in response to variation in I o may occur on a daily basis during the summer, when temperatures are near 20°C; this has yet to be verified for in situ populations.  相似文献
