Quantitative data on size structure of the ophiuroid Amphiura filiformis (O.F. Müller) from 35 benthic stations in the Kattegat sampled twice with a 143 d interval, June and October 1991, were used to estimate somatic growth. The material was objectively divided into cohorts, and cohorts, from the two occasions were paired to give estimates of growth. The growth constant, K, in the Von Bertalanffy equation, was estimated from a Ford-Walford plot to 0.54 yr-1. Results were in agreement with previous estimates from a few single sites, and suggest that the main part of dise growth occurs within the first 5 to 7 yr of living. Size specific growth in oral width was density independent despite high densities of A. filiformis (>3000 ind m-2) and high total benthic biomass (up to 1000 g wet wt m-2) in some areas. Growth was uncorrelated with plant pigment concentrations in the sediment and showed weak positive correlation with sediment carbon and nitrogen, as well as water depth. Growth was higher in fine sediments. This is the first attempt to estimate growth in this important species over a large area and to relate growth in the field to environmental factors.  相似文献

In a series of multifactorial laboratory experiments, Ulva lactuca discs were grown in an apparatus in which they were exposed simultaneously to 3 simulated current speeds (7.5, 15, 22.5 cm s-1) and a still control, and either 3 ammonium concentrations (0–10, 35–45 and 115–145 M) under ample uniform light (ca 200 E m-2 s-1) or 3 light intensities (approximately 35, 90 and 270 E m-2 s-1) with uniform surplus, ammonium. Disc growth rates were determined in each experiment as well as tissue nitrogen and carbon composition and fluxes of NH4, NO3/NO2 and PO4 in media. In a supplementary series of field experiments, U. lactuca discs were simultaneously exposed to 2 different water motion regimes in adjacent chambers at several sites characterized by widely different ammonium concentrations. In field experiments, growth rates were calculated and analyzed as a function of water motion at the various sites. The application of simulated current consistently enhanced disc growth rates in the laboratory, except at the lowest light intensity. In most cases this enhancement was fully realized at the lowest applied simulated current (7.5 cm s-1). Simulated current slightly enhanced ammonium uptake rates by U. lactuca discs, relative to rates in still water, except at the highest ammonium concentration. C:N ratios of discs generally declined with increases in simulated current, except at the highest ammonium concentration. This decline was primarily attributable to increases in per cent N and was, again, mainly realized at 7.5 cm s-1. The results suggested that simulated current compensated for N limitation, except when light was sufficiently low to become the overriding limiting factor, but that the enhancement of growth by simulated current could not be explained in terms of N metabolism alone. Field experiments showed that the higher level of water motion consistently enhanced growth at sites with comparatively low ammonium concentrations, but not at sites with moderate or high ammonium concentrations.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity, pH and carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors on photosynthesis of the red marine macroalgae Solieria filiformis (Kützing) Gabrielson, collected from Taliarte (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) in 1991, has been investigated. Plants taken from the sea (wild phenotype) developed spherical morphology (ball phenotype) after 2 mo culture in aerated tanks. The photosynthetic oxygen evolution in the wild phenotype was saturated at 100 mol photons m-2s-1, while the ball phenotype displayed saturation at 200 mol photons m-2s-1. The inhibitors of total CA activity (6-ethoxizolamide) and extracellular CA activity (dextran-bound sulfonamide) inhibited photosynthesis at pH 8.2, to 90 and 50% respectively, in both phenotypes. No inhibition of the photosynthetic oxygen evolution was detected at pH 6.5. CA activity was associated with both supernatant and pellet fractions of crude extracts of S. filiformis. The rate of alkalization of the medium by the algae was dependent on light intensity. We suggest that carbon dioxide is the general form of inorganic carbon transported across the plasmamembrane in S. filiformis. HCO3 transport into the cell takes place simultaneously by an indirect mechanism (dehydration to CO2 catalyzed by CAext) and by direct uptake. Extracellular (CAext) and intracellular (CAint) CAs are involved in the mechanisms of inorganic carbon assimilation by S. filiformis.  相似文献

The biology, population dynamics, and production of Tylos europaeus were studied in two sandy beaches of the western coast of Portugal. At both sites, reproduction occurred seasonally, from April to July, with only one new cohort produced per year. Regarding population dynamics, cohort-splitting events were detected in males at the beginning of the reproduction period (April/May), resulting in two groups with distinct growth rates (fast-growing vs slow-growing males). Different biological characteristics were consequently detected in these two groups, namely regarding body size, lifespan, and contribution to the reproductive effort. Lifespan was estimated as approximately 3 years, for females and fast-growing males, and 4 years for slow-growing males. Cohort-splitting among males appeared as a possible strategy to cope with the highly male-biased sex ratios observed, which could lead to a strong male-male competition for mating. T. europaeus appeared as an annual species, with a univoltine life-cycle (one generation per year), and iteroparous females reproducing twice during their lifespan. Average growth production (P) was estimated at 0.082 g.m–2.yr–1 AFDW (ash-free dry weight) and the average annual biomass () (standing stock) at 0.052 g.m–2, resulting in a P/ ratio of 1.58. These results produced baseline information for the construction of a population-dynamics model and highlighted the potential of this species as an environmental quality-assessment bioindicator on sandy shores.Communicated by S.A. The dynamics of 65Zn specific activity and total zinc in benthic fishes on the outer continental shelf off central Oregon (USA) were examined. A differential equation that relates specific activity of 65Zn in fish to that in fish food was used to estimate 's (zinc uptake-rate coefficients) for 3 different size classes of the flounder Lyopsetta exillis, a small predator of pelagic Crustacea, and for 1 size class of the flounder Microstromus pacificus, a large predator of infauna. The 's obtained for L. exilis were very close to the obtained in the laboratory for the flounder Pleuronectes platessa. The estimated for M. pacificus was very much smaller than the 's estimated for the other two species. A model that related to predicted weight-specific feeding rates suggested that the smaller of M. pacificus was caused by a low absorption efficiency of zinc from its prey. Sensitivity studies indicated that time histories of specific activity in the fishes are not sensitive to moderate changes in . The negative correlation between specific activity in the diet and in the weight of L. exilis was the major cause of the negative correlative between specific activity and weight in this species. In M. pacificus, where composition of diet does not vary with size, specific activity was independent of weight. The time history of specific activity in M. pacificus was very much lower than those in the different size classes of L. exilis, a result caused mainly by the much lower specific activity of the prey of M. pacificus. Differences in specific activity among other benthic fishes were also correlated with differences in specific activity of their prey. The food-web dynamics responsible for these patterns are discussed. Variation in total zinc concentrations among species was small. Within species of flounder, zinc concentration varied only slightly or not at all with weight.  相似文献

The estuarine copepod Acartia tonsa was collected on several occasions between 4 April and 14 August 1985 from Terrebonne Bay, Louisiana (29°08N; 90°36W) and the effects in its diet of suspended sediments, collected from the same area, were measured at five different concentrations of sediment (100 to 1 000 ppm) and six phytoplankton concentrations (500 to 13 000 cells ml-1 Thalassiosira weissflogii). Egg production rate was used as an index of diet quality. At low phytoplankton concentrations (500 cells ml-1), and at intermediate phytoplankton concentrations (2 000 cells ml-1) for previously starved copepods, egg production was reduced by up to 40% at a sediment concentration of 250 ppm and further reduced at higher sediment concentrations. At higher food concentrations (4 000 to 13 000 cells ml-1), suspended sediment had no effect on egg production rates at sediment concentrations up to 500 ppm. Rates were reduced only at the highest sediment concentration of 1 000 ppm. Under most natural conditions, suspended sediment would not significantly affect egg production rates in A. tonsa.  相似文献

The pattern of growth (biomass accumulation) in Ecklonia radiata throughout the year and across a depth profile was investigated using the traditional hole-punch method, and the information presented in context with concurrently measured in situ net productivity rates. The rate of net daily productivity showed a lack of consistent seasonal variability, remaining constant throughout the year at two of the four depths measured (3 m and 12 m), and becoming higher during winter at another (5 m). Throughout the year, rates of net daily productivity differed significantly across the depth profile. Net daily productivity rates averaged 0.017 g C g–1 dwt day–1 and 0.005 g C g–1 dwt day–1 at a depth of 3 m (1,394 mol O2 g–1 dwt day–1) and 10 m (382 mol O2 g–1 dwt day–1) respectively. In contrast, the biomass accumulation rate of E. radiata was highly seasonal, with low rates of growth occurring in autumn (0.002 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at both 3 and 10 m) and summer (0.007 and 0.004 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively) and higher rates in spring (0.016 and 0.007 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively) and winter (0.015 and 0.008 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively). The proportion of assimilated carbon used for biomass accumulation varied throughout the year, between 5% and 41% at 3 m and between 28% and 128% at 10 m. The rates of biomass accumulation at all depths represented only a small proportion of the amount of carbon assimilated annually.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

In situ growth rates were determined, using two, 1-yr mark/recapture experiments, conducted between September 1991 and July 1993, for an undescribed mytilid, Seep Mytilid Ia, at three hydrocarbon seep sites in the Gulf of Mexico. The sites are located at depths of 540 to 730m, approximately 27°45N; 91°30W, and are separated by distances of 6 to 18 miles. These seep mytilids harbor methanotrophic endosymbionts and use methane as both a carbon and energy source. The mussel habitats were chemically characterized by analysis of water samples taken from precisely located microenvironments over, among and below the mussels, using small-volume, interstitial water samplers and the Johnson Sea Link submersible. Substantial differences were found in habital conditions, growth rates, and population structure for the mussels at the three sites examined. The growth rate of these seep mytilids reflects the methane concentration in their immediate habitat. Mussels at sites with abundant methane had growth rates that were comparable to shallow water mytilids at similar temperatures (5 to 8°C) with increases in shell length up to 17 mm yr–1 documented for smaller mussels (<40 mm shell length). In conjunction with measurements of growth rates, three condition indices (glycogen content, tissue water content, and the ratio of ash-free dry weight to shell volume) were used to determine the relationship between the condition of the mussels, their growth rates, and their habitat chemistry. The three condition indices were correlated with growth rate and were often significantly different between mussels in different samples.  相似文献

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope signatures have been determined for littoral fishes from three localities in the Balearic Islands (NW Mediterranean) for trophic assessment. Variation in the isotopic composition was examined at multiple levels: the individual organism, individual populations (ontogenetic variation) and at area effects (different islands). Cluster analyses based on 13C and 15N resulted in two very different dendrograms for the fish assemblages from Menorca and Formentera. In both schemes, congeners of the genera Diplodus and Labrus did not cluster together, suggesting that closely related species do not necessarily feed on similar foods. Significant differences in 15N were detected between locations for Scorpaena porcus, Scorpaena scrofa and Sciaena umbra, and significant differences in 13C were detected for Scorpaena porcus and Scorpaena scrofa. Overall there were significant spatial differences in the trophic position of littoral fishes among the three Balearic Islands, and fishes from Palma, Mallorca tended to feed at a higher trophic level than fishes from either Menorca and Formentera. Large-scale geographic comparisons, using earlier data from three sites in western Mallorca and in Corsica revealed that throughout the western Mediterranean generally, the average trophic level of fishes differs remarkably little. However, large discrepancies were observed in 15N for individual species, notably Scorpaena porcus, D. annularis, D. vulgaris and Serranus scriba. 13C composition of fishes did not seem to change greatly among the locations, although marked discrepancies were observed for D. puntazzo and Mullus surmuletus. Given the large-scale patterns we have observed, it is possible that the extent of multichannel omnivory which has been purported to exist in complex aquatic systems, may have been greatly overstated. Regression of 15N and 13C with fish body size revealed clear and significant trends for some species. In particular, 15N appeared to increase with body length in the macrocarnivorous fishes Scorpaena porcus, Scorpaena scrofa, Serranus scriba and Sciaena umbra. Trends were less apparent in animals which feed primarily on small benthic invertebrates, notably the four Diplodus species (D. vulgaris, D. sargus, D. annularis, D. puntazzo), and the labrids Labrus viridis and L. merula.Communicated by J.P. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between food quality and trophic structure of macrobenthic communities of the Dogger Bank. Therefore, 21 stations along different depth gradients (a transect across the central Dogger Bank and at a station cross in the north-eastern part) were sampled and analysed for macrofauna trophic structure and food supply, indicated by phytopigment composition and organic matter contents of the sediment. The study revealed differences in the trophic structure of the benthic community in areas with contrasting food supply. The trophic structure reflected differences in relative quality of organic matter. The sandy sediments on top of the bank receiving intermediate quantities of high food quality were inhabited by high abundances of interface feeders and sand-licking amphipods of the genus Bathyporeia. The southern stations characterised by a comparatively high amount of intermediate food quality were dominated by interface feeders such as Amphiura filiformis. The northern and north-eastern stations showing the highest diversity of feeding types were characterised by a comparatively low, but highly variable input of intermediate-quality organic matter consisting of both fresh and degraded organic matter. Results are discussed with a special emphasis on specific Dogger Bank features such as benthic primary production and frontal system characteristics.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Alkanes and alkenes in marine benthic algae   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Saturated and olefinic hydrocarbons were determined in additional species of benthic marine algae from the Cape Cod (Massachusetts, USA) area (see: Youngblood et al., 1971). The distribution of homologous and isomeric olefins was studied in plants of different age and in morphologically different parts of the same specimen. With two minor exceptions, only normal alkanes and alkenes are present. The methylene-interrupted C19- and C21-polyolefins are particularly abundant; 1-heneicosahexaene and the corresponding pentaene are common to all brown algae, while the corresponding 3-isomers occur in green algae. The hydrocarbon concentration, the alkene-to-alkane ratio and the polyolefin content are highest in young plants or in rapidly growing tissues of older plants. This suggests a deeper involvement in cell biochemistry of straight-chain hydrocarbons than previously considered. The biosynthesis of the plant polyolefins remains to be explored; no immediately obvious precursors of the 1-polyolefins were found among the algal fatty acids. The hydrocarbon composition of these benthic algae differs greatly from that of fossil fuels in its simplicity and predominately unsaturated nature. The separation of the isomers by gas chromatography and their structural elucidation by mass spectrometry, alone and in combination with hydrogenation and ozonolysis, are discussed.Contribution No. 3155 of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  相似文献

Macrofauna living on subtidal rocks reefs in southern California excrete ammonium, a potentially important nutrient for benthic algae. Ammonium excretion rates of eleven macroinvertebrate and five fish taxa were determined from a total of 324 in situ incubations conducted between October 1984 and August 1985 at 14 to 17 m depths off Santa Catalina Island, California. Total ammonium excretion ranged from over 100 mol h-1 by the kelp bass Paralabrax clathratus to less than 0.1 mol h-1 by the gastropod Conus californicus. Weight-specific ammonium excretion generally ranged from 0.5 to 4 mol g-1 h-1 in invertebrates and from 3 to 7 mol g-1 h-1 in fishes. Intraspecific excretion rates varied substantially. Coefficient of variation of excretion rates were higher than reported for laboratory studies and multiple regression indicated that 50 to 90% of the variation in ammonium excretion rates of five species studied in detail could not be explained by the combined variation in dry weight, water temperature, time of day, and incubation dates. The excretion data, along with estimates of population densities and size-frequency distributions, indicate that benthic macrofauna release a total of 25 to 30 mol NH 4 + m-2 h-1 both day and night. The species that generally make the largest contributions are a gobiid fish (Lythrypnus dalli), followed by three gastropods (Astraea undosa, Tegula eiseni, and T. aureotincta) and a sea urchin (Centrostephanus coronatus). The amount of ammonium excreted by these macrofauna on rocky reefs is insignificant compared to our previously published data on the nighttime excretion of blacksmith (Chromis punctipinnis), a pomacentrid fish that feeds in the water column during the day and shelters on the reef at night. Including blacksmiths, we estimate that the amount released by rocky-reef macrofauna at night is >280 mol m-2 h-1, a rate that is similar to that for many other marine communities. Additional studies are required to determine if benthic algae utilize ammonium released by these macrofauna, especially at night.Contribution No. 58 of the Ocean Studies Institute; Contribution No. 123 of the Catalina Marine Science Center  相似文献

Fatty acid biosynthesis in the larval stages of Penaeus japonicus Bate was examined by feeding microencapsulated diets containing (1-14C) palmitic acid, and fat-free diets supplemented with defined fatty acids. Highest larval growth rates were achieved on diets containing Tapes philippinarum lipid and, when defined fatty acids were substituted, on diets containing 20:63 fatty acid. The radioactive tracer experiments indicate that 16:17, 18:0 and 18:19 fatty acids may be synthesised from palmitic acid and that P. japonicus larvae may possess the ability to elongate 18:33 to 20:53 and 22:63, and 18:26 to 20:46. However, the rates of these reactions appear to be too slow to meet the larval requirements for essential fatty acids and the 3 series of polyunsaturated fatty acids must be provided in the diet.  相似文献

Feeding, growth and bioluminescence of the thecate heterotrophic dinoflagellate Protoperidinium huberi were measured as a function of food concentration for laboratory cultures grown on the diatom Ditylum brightwellii. Ingestion of food increased with food concentration. Maximum ingestion rates were measured at food concentrations of 600 g C l-1 and were 0.7 g C individual-1 h-1 (1.8 D. brightwelli cells individual-1 h-1). Clearance rates decreased asymptotically with increasing food concentration. Maximum clearance rates at low food concentration were ca. 23 l ind-1 h-1, which corresponds to a volume-specific clearance rate of 5.9x105 h-1. Cell size of P huberi was highly variable, with a mean diameter of 42 m, but no clear relationship between cell size and food concentration was evident. Specific growth rates increased with food concentration until maximum growth rates of 0.7 d-1 were reached at a food concentration of 400 g C l-1 (1000 cells ml-1). Food concentrations as low as 10 g C l-1 of D. brightwellii (25 cells ml-1) were able to support growth of P. huberi. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied with its nutritional condition and growth rate. Cells held without food lost their bioluminescence capacity in a matter of days. P. huberi raised at different food concentrations showed increased bioluminescence capacity, up to food concentration that supported maximum growth rates. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied over a diel cycle, and these rhythmic changes persisted during 48 h of continuous darkness, indicating that the rhythm was under endogenous control.  相似文献

In a shallow, subtidal, siliceous sediment, benthic microalgal biomass (g chlorophyll a cm-3) is influenced by light and physical sediment dynamics. The microalgal community is relatively dense, despite adverse conditions (7.0 g chlorophyll a cm-3), and is able to respond rapidly to favorable conditions. Productivity of this community is significantly correlated (P0.05) with benthic light. In addition, productivity is influenced by temperature and bottom water NH4 + and PO4 -3 concentrations, especially as the concentrations fall to levels approaching the K s (halfsaturation constant) of the microalgal community. Metabolic activity in this environment is dependent upon a continuous supply of organic carbon. Temperature is significantly correlated with respiration rate, but other factors (e.g. biomass and organic matter supply) are important also. Community respiration responds to overlying phytoplankton productivity in the same manner as deep-water benthic environments. Bacterial enumeration using CFU (colony-forming units) does not measure accurately the number of in situ metabolically active bacteria. This research was supported by Energy Research and Development Administration Contract AT (11-1) 3279, US AEC Contract AT (11-1) GEN 10, P.A. 20 and NOAA Sea Grant No. 04-3-158-22.  相似文献

Benthic ecology of the high arctic deep sea   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An analysis is made of 75 quantitative benthic samples collected by Mini-LUBS, and 28 qualitative benthic samples collected with the small biological trawl, from Fletcher's Ice Island, T-3, while it was drifting over the Alpha Cordillera region of the High Arctic Ocean during October, 1969 through February, 1970 and in March, 1972. The depth range was 1000 to 2500 m. Benthic foraminiferans account for about 53%, bivalves for 27%, sponges for 7%, and polychaetes for 5% of the total biomass. Other groups make up the remaining 8%. The weight ratio of macro- to meiofauna is 1:1. Numerically, excluding Foraminifera, polychaetes comprise 42%, nematodes 16%, sponges 11%, and bivalves 8% of the total fauna. The remaining 23% is composed of 13 other taxa. Biomass in the Amerasian Basin at depths of 1000 to 2000 m is extremely low (0.04 g/m); it is comparable to depths of 5000 to 6000 m in the oligotrophic red-clay area of the mid-Pacific Ocean, and is 40 times less than biomass at comparable depths from Antarctica and off Peru. Diversity, as calculated by the Shannon-Weaver method, is low, suggesting that the Arctic ecosystem is young, as reported in earlier studies (Dunbar, 1968; Menzies et al., 1973). Although the H' values are low, no biocoenoses of oligomixity in the deep Arctic are revealed, contrary to previous statements and beliefs. There may be fewer major benthic groups in the Arctic Ocean than in other parts of the world oceans. Following the conventional terminology of Petersen (1913) and Thorson (1957), we have called the High Arctic biocoenoses of the Alpha Cordillera region a Thenea abyssorum-Spirorbis granulatus community.  相似文献

The seaweeds Gracilaria foliifera (Rhodophyceae) and Ulva sp. (Chlorophyceae) were grown in an outdoor continuous-flow system at both ambient incident light (I0) and 0.13 I0. During the winter, both species accumulated substantial soluble nitrogen reserves (up to 1020 g-at N·g dry wt-1 in G. foliifera and 630 g-at N·g dry wt-1 in Ulva sp.). The rate at which these N reserves were depleted was proportional to the growth rate. Seaweeds grown at 0.13 I0 had lower growth rates and higher levels of soluble tissue N than plants grown at I0. During the spring-summer growing season, peaks in tissue N followed nutrient peaks in the ambient seawater. Ulva sp. had higher nutrient uptake and growth rates than G. foliifera and showed greater fluctuations in soluble tissue N. This may characterize opportunistic seaweed species with high biomass turnover rates. At I0, the levels of starch (up to 340 mg·g dry wt-1 in G. foliifera and 170 mg·g dry wt-1 in Ulva sp.) were highest during the spring and summer. During this period, fluctuations in starch content were inversely related to growth rate and soluble tissue N. Seaweeds grown at 0.13 I0 did not accumulate starch. Neither species was found to overwinter with starch reserves.  相似文献

Taxonomic composition, biomass as organic carbon, numerical abundance, and size distribution of the microplankton were determined at 6 Southern California nearshore locations in late May–early June, 1970. Samples were taken at approximately 5 m (10 m at one station) intervals through the upper 40 to 50 m to reveal some of the small-scale differences and levels of variability in the populations. Total microplankton biomass over all euphotic zone samples varied by more than two orders of magnitude (7.6 to 1,200 g C l-1). Average biomass at comparable sites (n=5) ranged from 48 to 240 g C l-1; biomass range within stations varied from about 5-fold to 120-fold. Total microplankton numbers varied approximately 22-fold (4.3×105 to 9.5×106 organisms l-1) over all euphotic zone samples, but the range within stations was always less than an order of magnitude. At comparable stations, nanoplankton biomass had ranges extending from 3.7-fold to 12-fold; its average percentage contribution (±1 SD) to the total microplankton biomass varied from 39±5% to 54±13%. Netplankton biomass showed a similar minimal range, but its greatest range was more than two orders of magnitude. Ranges of abundance of major taxonomic groups within stations varied considerably from about 2-fold to more than three orders of magnitude. The small-scale variability of the populations probably affects the reliability of the microplankton as a food source for pelagic consumers.  相似文献

At four sites (Sunset Bay, Miller's Cove, and Shore Acres 43° 20.13 N; 124° 22.40 W, Nellies Cove 42° 44.75 N; 124° 29.75 W) along the Oregon coast, USA, relationships between fronts associated with shore-parallel foam lines and the distributions of chlorophyll, selected phytoplankters, and detritus were investigated. Sampling dates at the study sites were as follows: Sunset Bay, 1 August 1997, 25 June 1999 and 20 July 1999; Miller's Cove, 24 August 2000; Shore Acres, 19 July 1999 and 16 August 2000; Nellies Cove 17 August 2000 and 31 August 2000. Conductivity, temperature and depth data were used to describe the water masses on either side of the fronts, and vertical plankton tows with a 53-m mesh net were used to describe the distribution of selected phytoplankters and detritus. At the cove sites during upwelling, fronts marked the presence of warm water within the bay and cooler water offshore. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) and phytoplankton concentrations were generally lower within the coves than seaward while detritus concentrations were higher. From 3 July 2000 to 15 September 2000, a period when upwelling winds from the north prevail, a time series of samples was collected at Sunset Bay. The front was only present during periods of upwelling favorable winds. During these periods there were significantly higher concentrations of Chl a, Pseudo-nitzschia spp., and Protoperidinium spp. seaward of the front than landward. During downwelling winds the front was absent and there were no significant differences in the concentrations inside and outside the mouth of the bay. At Shore Acres, an exposed, relatively straight stretch of shoreline, the shore-parallel front appears to be formed by boundary mixing. Chl a and phytoplankton from the coastal ocean spread well shoreward of the boundary-mixing front. When present, the front at the mouth of the coves and bay indicated the presence of water masses with distinct physical and biological characteristics, but not at Shore Acres. Alongshore differences in the very nearshore oceanography, by altering the availability of continental shelf phytoplankton production, may affect both the growth rates of intertidal benthic suspension feeders and community structure.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at .Communicated by J.P. Variations in number and biomass of benthic bacteria were examined in the surface sediments of a Mediterranean seagrass bed [Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile] in the Gulf of Marconi (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) from 1990 to 1991. The annual dynamics of benthic bacterial density and biomass were compared to changes in elemental (organic C and total N) and biochemical (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates) composition of sediment organic matter, as well as to microphytobenthic biomass, dissolved inorganic nutrients and ATP. Bacterial densities exhibited marked seasonal variations (5.12 to 322.7x108 cells g-1 sediment dry wt) with highest values in late spring. Bacterial standing stocks (15.8 to 882.33 g C g-1 of sediment dry wt) were high. Bacterial biomass did not correlate with organic C, total N or to specific biochemical components, but correlated significantly with chlorophyll a, ATP and porewater phosphate concentrations. There is evidence that benthic bacteria were responding to variations of algal biomass. Bacterial biomass accounted, on average, for 30% of total living carbon (calculated on the basis of the ATP concentrations) and 8.4% of total organic carbon.  相似文献
