Perchlorate contamination of aquifers and drinking-water supplies has led to stringent regulations in several states to reduce perchlorate concentrations in water at acceptable levels for human consumption. Several perchlorate treatment technologies exist, but there is significant cost associated with their use, and the majority of them are unable to degrade perchlorate to innocuous chloride. We propose the use of a novel sorbent for perchlorate, i.e. an aluminum-based drinking-water treatment residual (Al-WTR), which is a by-product of the drinking-water treatment process. Perchlorate sorption isotherms (23+/-1 degrees C) showed that the greatest amount (65%) of perchlorate removed by the Al-WTR was observed with the lowest initial perchlorate load (10 mg L(-1)) after only 2 h of contact time. Increasing the contact time to 24 h, perchlorate removal increased from 65 to 76%. A significant correlation was observed between the amounts of perchlorate removed with evolved chloride in solution, suggesting degradation of perchlorate to chloride.  相似文献

The performance of a garbage disposal system to solubilize and mineralize food wastes through biological solubilization was evaluated through the examination of the effects of operational conditions like water supply volume, water supply frequency and aeration on the amount of waste solubilized, mineralized and accumulated in the reactor. The biological solubilization process consisted of a solubilization reactor and a circulation tank. Food waste and fresh water were supplied into the solubilization reactor with support media. Wastewater from the solubilization reactor was discharged to the circulation tank and water in the circulation tank was periodically pumped back to the solubilization reactor. In case of the total food waste loading of 16 kg m(3-1) d(-1), little carbon (0-5.7%) accumulated in the reactor as long as the system was kept under aerobic condition through large volume of water supply (higher than 3.5 lh(-1)) or applying aeration in the circulation tank. However, 42% of the loaded carbon accumulated under anaerobic condition in low water supply (less than 1.8 lh(-1)). The rest of the waste was either solubilized or mineralized. The aeration in the circulation tank, therefore, was effective to provide similar solubilization and mineralization as the large volume of water supply. However, frequency of feeding at the large volume of water supply had no significant effect on the amount of waste solubilization and mineralization.  相似文献

The treatment of municipal solid waste landfill leachate in a pilot plant made up of solar compound parabolic collectors, using a solid industrial titanium by-product (WTiO2) containing TiO2 and Fe(III) as a photocatalyst, was investigated. In the study evidence was found showing that the degradation performed with WTiO2 was mainly due to the Fe provided by this by-product, instead of TiO2. However, although TiO2 had very little effect by itself, a synergistic effect was observed between Fe and TiO2. The application of WTiO2, which produced coupled photo-Fenton and heterogeneous catalysis reactions, achieved a surprisingly high depuration level (86% of COD removal), higher than that reached by photo-Fenton using commercial FeSO4 (43%) in the same conditions. After the oxidation process the biodegradability and toxicity of the landfill leachate were studied. The results showed that the leachate biodegradability was substantially increased, at least in the first stages of the process, and again that WTiO2 was more efficient than FeSO4 in terms of increasing biodegradability.  相似文献

酮连氮法制水合肼会产生大量的副产废盐,这些副产盐因其中所含杂质有机物较多而无法直接回用于离子膜电解过程。采用水洗法处理此类废盐,可基本去除废盐中的杂质有机物,使废盐能够满足电解制碱的要求。为进一步探究水洗法处理废盐过程中各因素间的影响关系,采用响应曲面法,分别建立了废盐失重率和UV254去除率与液固质量比、水洗次数和盐温度的优化模型,优化了工艺所采用的实验条件。结果表明,液固质量比、水洗次数和盐温度3者对废盐水洗过程的影响的强弱为,水洗次数>液固质量比>盐温度。根据模型预测,最佳工艺条件为,液固质量比为5: 8、水洗次数2次、盐温度25 ℃、停留时间5 min。在最佳工艺条件下的废盐失重率和UV254去除率分别为12.6%和97.8%,实验结果与模型预测结果基本一致。处理后的废盐可满足离子膜电解用盐标准,水洗法可有效去除废盐中的杂质有机物,响应曲面法的优化结果对实际水洗过程具有指导意义。  相似文献

In the present work, a novel and simple detection system for As inorganic species contained in groundwater is presented. To reach the required detection limit, the proposed methodology is based on two steps: first is the transport and preconcentration of the inorganic arsenic species using a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) system and second is the formation of a coloured complex, the  absorbance of which is measured. Different parameters related to the membrane composition and the transport kinetics have been studied, and it was found that membranes made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a polymer, and Aliquat 336 as a carrier, ensured efficient arsenic transport when the carrier content was at least 31 % (w/w). The implementation of the designed PIM in a special device that contained only 5 mL of the stripping solution (0.1 M NaCl) allowed As preconcentration from a 100-mL water sample, thus facilitating its detection with the colorimetric method. The new method developed here was validated, and its analytical figures of merit were determined, i.e. limit of detection of 4.5 μg L?1 at 820 nm and a relative standard deviation within the range 8–10 %. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the analysis of different water samples from Catalonia region with naturally occurring As.  相似文献

Runoff water quality improvement from three yard waste compost erosion control treatments were compared with two conventional treatments and an untreated control on plots of 3:1 slope during two growing seasons, using natural events and simulated rainfall. Runoff volume, suspended solids, nutrients, biomass, turf shear strength, and turfgrass color scale were monitored. The most effective compost treatment, a 5-cm thick blown compost blanket, produced 12.7 times less runoff and 9.8 times less sediment load than a straw mat and silt fence treatment. The compost treatments generated eight times more biomass than the straw mat treatments. Root development was significantly better on the compost treatments based on turf shear strength measurements. Tilled-in compost was not as effective as a compost blanket at reducing sediment loss, particularly before the establishment of grass on the plot. The cost of compost treatments was similar to that of straw mat with silt fence treatments.  相似文献

Since 1971 unshaded leaves from the top of marked beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) in the vicinity of a regional waste incinerator have been sampled every year in early September. The unwashed leaf samples were analyzed for the concentration of Cl- and, in some years, for 16 other elements. The operation of the waste incinerator distinctly increased the Cl- concentration in the foliage. When the flue gas filtration did not work properly, several other elements also accumulated (without any obvious dust accumulation). There were no significant correlations between precipitation and concentration of water-soluble elements in foliage samples. This suggested that precipitation was not accelerating foliar leaching so that the bioindication of pollutant accumulation is not restricted in foliage with a well developed cuticula.  相似文献

New vegetation in barren areas offers possibilities for sequestering carbon in the soil. Arid and semi-arid areas (ASAs) are candidates for new vegetation. The possibility of agriculture in ASAs is reviewed, revealing the potential for cultivation by covering the surface with a layer of organic fibres. This layer collects more water from humidity in the air than does the uncovered mineral surface, and creates a humid environment that promotes microbial life. One possibility is to use large amounts of organic fibres for soil enhancement in ASAs. In the context of the European Commission Waste Framework Directive, the possibility of using textile waste from Sweden is explored. The costs for using Swedish textile waste are high, but possible gains are the sale of agricultural products and increased land prices as well as environmental mitigation. The findings suggest that field research on such agriculture in ASAs should start as soon as possible.  相似文献

Evaluation of Chitosan zerovalent Iron Nanoparticle (CIN) towards arsenic removal is presented. Addition of chitosan enhances the stability of Fe(0) nano particle. Prepared adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, SEM EDX, BET and XRD. It was found that, with an initial dose rate of 0.5 g L−1, concentrations of As (III) and As (V) were reduced from 2 mg L−1 to <5 μg L−1 in less than 180 min and the adsorbent was found to be applicable in wide range of pH. Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 94 ± 1.5 mg g−1 and 119 ± 2.6 mg g−1 at pH 7 for As (III) and As (V) respectively. Major anions including sulfate, phosphate and silicate did not cause significant interference in the adsorption behavior of both arsenite and arsenate. The adsorbent was successfully recycled five times and applied to the removal of total inorganic arsenic from real life groundwater samples.  相似文献

The disposal of industrial brine sludge waste (IBSW) in chlor-alkali plants can be avoided by utilization of IBSW as a sorbent in wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD). The shrinking core model was used to determine the dissolution kinetics of IBSW, which is a vital step in wet FGD. The effects of solid-to-liquid ratio (m/v), temperature, pH, particle size, and stirring speed on the conversion and dissolution rate constant are determined. The conversion and dissolution rate constant decreases as the pH, particle size, and solid-to-liquid ratio are increased and increases as the temperature, concentration of acid, and stirring speed are increased. The sorbents before and after dissolution were characterized using x-ray fluorescence (XRF), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). An activation energy of 7.195 kJ/mol was obtained and the product layer diffusion model was found to be the rate-controlling step.

Implications: The use of industrial brine sludge waste as an alternative sorbent in wet flue gas desulfurization can reduce the amounts of industrial wastes disposed of in landfills. This study has proved that the sorbent can contain up to 91% calcium carbonate and trace amounts of sulfate, magnesium, and so on. This can be used as new sorbent to reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere and the by-product gypsum can be used in construction, as a plaster ingredient, as a fertilizer, and for soil conditioning. Therefore, the sorbent has both economic and environmental benefits.  相似文献

The time required to destroy 3 concentrations (10, 100, and 1000 ppm) of 9 formulated herbicides (alachlor, atrazine, bentazon, butylate, cyanazine, 2, 4-D, metolachlor, metribuzin, and trifluralin) and two formulated insecticides (carbofuran and malathion) by ultraviolet (UV)-ozonation (O3) was measured in a 66 UV lamp unit. The time required for 90% destruction was dependent on the concentration and increased as the concentration of pesticide increased. UV irradiation in the presence of ozone rapidly photooxidized all pesticides at 10 and 100 ppm and averaged 22 and 61 min, respectively. A magnetite-loaded mesocellular carbonaceous material, Fe3O4/MSU-F-C, exhibited superior activity as both a Fenton catalyst and an adsorbent for removal of phenol and arsenic, and strong magnetic property rendering it separable by simply applying magnetic field. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, the catalytic process by Fe3O4/MSU-F-C completely oxidized phenol and As(III) under the conditions where commercial iron oxides showed negligible effects. Notably, the decomposition of H2O2 by Fe3O4/MSU-F-C was not faster than those by commercial iron oxides, indicating that hydroxyl radical produced via the catalytic process by Fe3O4/MSU-F-C was used more efficiently for the oxidation of target contaminants compared to the other iron oxides. The homogeneous Fenton reaction by the dissolved iron species eluted from Fe3O4/MSU-F-C was insignificant. At relatively high doses of Fe3O4/MSU-F-C, total concentration of arsenic decreased to a significant extent due to the adsorption of arsenic on the catalyst surface. The removal of arsenic by adsorption was found to proceed via preoxidation of As(III) into As(V) and the subsequent adsorption of As(V) onto the catalyst.  相似文献

厨余发酵液中含有丰富的VFA、乳酸等快速降解有机物,以及碳水化合物、蛋白质等慢速降解的有机物,利用厨余发酵液作为外增碳源强化生物脱氮的可行性。首先利用SBR处理投加厨余发酵液后的低C/N污水,经过40 d的培养,最终TN去除率稳定在85%左右,出水COD低于40 mg/L,说明厨余发酵液具有强化生物脱氮的能力;然后利用批式实验研究其在不同C/N条件下的反硝化规律,发现当C/N≤5.1时,出水出现了NO-2-N积累现象,C/N升高到最佳的6.5时,NO-2-N积累现象消失,反硝化速率为3.77 mg NO-3-N/(g VSS·h)。  相似文献

Emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) from municipal waste incineration have been widely studied because of their extensive toxicity, and many efforts have been made to restrict their emissions. Although a number of chemical compounds have been shown in laboratory-scale tests to inhibit the formation of PCDD/Fs, few have been tested in pilot- or full-scale plants. This work evaluates the effect of urea as a PCDD/F inhibitor in a pilot-scale incinerator that uses refuse-derived fuel (RDF). The decomposition of urea under the test conditions was also studied using detailed kinetic modeling. An aqueous solution of urea was injected into the flue gas stream after the furnace at approximately 730 degrees C, with varied urea concentrations and flue gas residence times used between the furnace and the sampling point. The results demonstrate that urea can successfully inhibit PCDD/F formation in waste incineration if concentrations and injection points are properly adjusted. The kinetic model showed that urea can be rapidly decomposed under appropriate flue gas conditions, indicating that in addition to the urea molecule itself, decomposition products of urea can also be responsible for the reduction of PCDD/F production during incineration.  相似文献

针对栽桑养蚕过程中废弃桑枝的综合利用,以废弃桑枝和十六烷基三甲基溴化铵为原料,经微波辐射加热制备高分子絮凝剂。通过单因素实验确定了制备絮凝剂的最佳工艺条件,并采用该絮凝剂处理造纸废水。结果表明,制备絮凝剂的最佳工艺条件为:NaOH溶液浓度为8%,碱化温度为室温,碱化时间为30 m in,Fe2+/H2O2的加入量为14 mmol/L,桑枝粉与十六烷基三甲基溴化铵的质量比为1∶1,微波功率为500 W,反应温度为90℃,反应时间为60 m in。制备的絮凝剂对造纸废水具有高效絮凝性能,在造纸废水pH值为10,絮凝剂投加量为100 mg/L的条件下,COD和浊度去除率分别达48.2%和81.4%。该絮凝剂对造纸废水的絮凝效果明显优于氯化铝,与聚合氯化铝相当,但其用量明显低于氯化铝和聚合氯化铝。  相似文献

Oil sorption capacity and hydrophobic-oleophilic characteristics of an agricultural product, kapok (Ceiba pentandra), was thoroughly examined. The kapok fiber has a hollow structure with large lumen. Its performance was compared with that of a polypropylene (PP), a widely used commercial oil sorbent for oil spill cleanup. The oils investigated were diesel, hydraulic oil (AWS46), and engine oil (HD40). Reusability of the kapok after application to various oils was also evaluated. Both loose (at its natural state) and densely packed kapok assemblies were examined. Sorption capacities of the packed kapok assemblies were very much dependent on their packing densities. At 0.02gcm(-3), its oil sorption capacities were 36, 43 and 45gg(-1) for diesel, ASW46 and HD40, respectively. The values decreased to 7.9, 8.1 and 8.6gg(-1) at 0.09gcm(-3). Its sorption capacities for the three oils were significantly higher than those of PP. When the oil-saturated kapok assemblies were allowed to drain, they exhibited high oil retention ability, with less than 8% of the absorbed diesel and HD40, and 12% of the absorbed AWS46 lost even after 1h of dripping. When applied on oil-over-water baths, the kapok exhibited high selectivity for the oils over the water; almost all oils spilled could be removed with the kapok, leaving an invisible oil slick on water. After the 4th cycle of reuse, the reused kapok assembly only lost 30% of its virgin sorption capacity if packed at 0.02gcm(-3), and the loss in sorption capacity was much less at higher packing densities. The hydrophobic-oleophilic characteristics of the kapok fiber could be attributed to its waxy surface, while its large lumen contributed to its excellent oil absorbency and retention capacity.  相似文献
