The problems of reproduction of Octopus vulgaris and the seasonal distribution in the sea of planktonic larvae, benthonic juveniles and adults are discussed. Growth of the shrimp Crangon vulgaris was studied by following the evolution of its nucleic acid concentration and total content. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) analysis were effected on homogenates of whole shrimps. Cell multiplication was estimated from evolution of total DNA content, and cell size increment from evolution of fresh weight: DNA ratio. DNA puric bases ratio and RNA monoribonucleotides percentages were constant throughout the investigation period. A decrease in DNA concentration was observed from 50 to 20 M/g dry defatted weight (DDP), when fresh weight increases from 40 to 570 mg. This decrease was more marked in the first half of the period studied (prepuberal phase). The DNA content in the whole shrimp increases with fresh weight without slowing down at sexual maturity. However, at the beginning of the prepuberal phase the cell-multiplication rate seems to be graduated rather than continuous; this is still to be explained. Cell size, calculated from fresh weight: DNA ratio, increases until the shrimp weighs 300 mg; beyond this weight, cell increment proceeds much more slowly. The weight gain of shrimps throughout the growth period studied is mainly attributable to hyperplasia — which occurs constantly — while hypertrophy insures only 21% weight increment in the largest shrimps. As protein content, RNA content is a linear function of shrimp weight. RNA:DNA ratio evolution is similar to that of cell size and protein content. We suggest that cells have attained a physiological balance when shrimps reach a weight of 300 mg.  相似文献

Over the past decade, statolith interpretation has resulted in a major advance in our knowledge of squid population-dynamics, but the way in which environmental conditions affect the statolith increment-deposition ratio remains virtually unknown. The object of the present study was to determine the effect of temperature on this process, using tetracycline marks to validate statolith growth in Loligo vulgaris Lamarck, 1798 under rearing conditions equivalent to severe winter (11 °C) and summer (19 °C) temperature regimes. Tetracycline marking was performed every 10 d (at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 d of age). The newly hatched squid paralarvae were slightly smaller in summer than those hatched in winter. Survival rates were similar in both cultures, but growth rates (wet mass) of summer squids were double those in winter. At hatching, statoliths were already longer in the summer squids, and growth rates were 2% d−1 as opposed to 0.9% d−1 for winter statoliths. For the dorsal dome area of the statolith, where more increment counts were made, statolith growth was of 3.25 μm d−1 in summer, and daily increment deposition was confirmed in 87% of the statoliths. The slow growth of statoliths at winter temperatures yielded a mean growth of 1.1 μm d−1– insufficient to discern the increments using light microscopy. Subsequent SEM observation enabled only 21% of the winter statoliths to be read; these also indicated a deposition rate of one increment d−1. Since the life span of L. vulgaris is ≃1 yr, squids will experience at least one winter during their life cycle, and this might be visible on the statolith. In this study, effect of different 2,4 -dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) concentrations (0.0, 9.10(-5), 9.10(-4), 9.10(-3) and 9.10(-2) mM) on growth rate, content of protein and chlorophyll-a in Chlorella vulgaris and Spirulina platensis cells was investigated. The most stimulatory effect on growth rate, protein and pigment ratio of C. vulgaris and S. platensis was observed at 9.10(-4) mM concentrations of 2,4-D. The results show that low concentrations of 2,4-D have hormonal effect due to being a synthetic auxin. Cell number protein and pigment rates were inhibited at 9.10(-2) mM concentration in C. vulgaris. Such parameters were inhibited in S. platensis, both at 9.10(-3) and 9.10(-2) mM 2,4-D concentrations. This is due to herbicidal effect of high concentrations of 2,4-D. S. platensis was found to be more sensitive than S. vulgaris to 2,4-D applications. The use of algae as bio-indicators in herbicide contaminated fresh water habitats, was discussed.  相似文献

Typically three events occur when Octopus vulgaris Cuvier mates. The male inserts its hectocotylus into the mantle cavity of the female; the hectocotylus and the bodies of the male and female become quiescent; and the female increases its ventilation rate about 2.5 times, on the average, above its precopulatory base rate. It is hypothesized that the increased ventilation rate of the female provides the stimulus to the male to transfer its spermatophore to the oviduct. Since the insertion of the hectocotylus and the female's increased ventilation rate may be dissociated, it is suggested that copulation be defined as the attachment of the hectocotylus to the oviduct. A conditioned ventilation-rate increase in the female was observed with repeated testing. Observation of arching and pumping movements of the male as well as measurements of its ventilation rate before and during copulation indicate that only a few spermatophores are transferred per copulation.  相似文献

Female Octopus vulgaris Cuvier mated in the laboratory in every month tested. Females maintained in isolation after capture and not mated in the laboratory laid eggs, fertile and infertile, each month of the year. The longest period of sperm viability was 104 days. Young specimens weighing between 4.0 and 66.0 g were found regularly. It is concluded that O. vulgaris breeds throughout the year, at least in Bahamian waters.  相似文献

We quantified the combined effects of three food levels (0.01 x 10(6), 0.1 x 10(6) and 1.0 x 10(6) cells ml(-1)) and three temperature levels (15, 20 and 25 degrees C) on the somatic and the clonal population growth of two cladocerans Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia pulex for 24 to 42 days. The somatic growth data showed that both the cladoceran species began to increase their body size within 3 days and remained stable beyond a week. Food density had a significant effect on the body size of C. dubia while for D. pulex, food level and temperature as well as their interaction had significant effect on the body size. The population growth of both the cladoceran species was affected by temperature. At 15 degrees C, C. dubia showed little growth at the highest food density, while at low food level, there was some increase in the population abundances, especially after a long lag phase of about 2 weeks. At 15 degrees C and under the lowest tested food level, the population of D. pulex did not increase beyond the inoculation density. Optimal population growth of D. pulex was observed at intermediate temperature and at 1.0 x 10(6) cells ml(-1) of food level while for C. dubia 25 degrees C and the highest food level yielded highest growth. At low food level and low temperature, the rate of population increase (r) of C. dubia was much lower than that of D. pulex at comparable conditions. On the hand, at higher food levels and temperature regimes, the r of D. pulex was much higher than that of C.dubia. Regardless of the food levels and temperature, the r of C. dubia varied from 0.03 to 0.07 while that of D. pulex varied from 0.01 to 0.08 day(1).  相似文献

Sheets of mantle tissue from above the mantle line of Mercenaria mercenaria were incubated for 2, 6 and 20 h at 20°C in 50 Ci 3H-glycine in 50 ml artificial seawater. Incorporation of tritium into soluble proteins excreted by the mantle and into tissue proteins was followed. The excretion of soluble protein continued throughout the experiment; the proportion of incorporated label excreted reached 17% by 20 h. The initiation of excretion of labelled protein seemed to lag 60 to 70 min behind the initiation of protein synthesis. Protein synthesis by the mantle contributed to proteins of the extrapallium and mantle chambers and, thus, may be involved in synthesis and regulation of proteins involved in the shell-formation process.  相似文献

为探究重金属与环境激素的联合毒性效应,以普通小球藻为受试生物,开展了锌与双酚A的单一及复合暴露对普通小球藻的急性毒性、叶绿素含量、可溶性蛋白含量及抗氧化应激的影响.结果显示,在单一暴露条件下,锌和双酚A对普通小球藻的EC50分别为5.10 mg·L-1和17.37 mg·L-1,仅在锌离子质量浓度低于0.25 mg·L-1时可促进普通小球藻叶绿素合成,而其他各暴露组中锌和双酚A对普通小球藻的光合作用具有抑制效应,采用等毒性配比法进行联合毒性试验,由相加指数法判断锌与双酚A对普通小球藻的联合作用类型为协同作用;藻细胞可溶性蛋白含量、抗氧化酶活性及丙二醛含量随锌与双酚A暴露浓度的增加被显著诱导,且高浓度的复合暴露对普通小球藻造成明显的氧化损伤.研究表明,锌与双酚A复合暴露会加强其在水环境中的毒性效应.  相似文献

The sea star Asterias vulgaris was observed in aquaria and in a flow tank in the presence of oysters, oyster tissue, and extracts of four shellfish species. Oysters were approached after varying delays, opened, and consumed; oyster tissue was rapidly approached and eaten. Dilute (ppb) shellfish extracts were approached in a flow tank. High concentrations of extracts elicited posturing and stomach eversion responses. Some suspended materials in flowing seawater inhibited the approach of A. vulgaris to oyster extract. The behavior of A. vulgaris and A. forbesi to food stimuli are compared. Asteroids appear to distinguish between intact and injured tissue, and exhibit variable responses. Groups of the sea star Asterias vulgaris approached a variety of chemical stimuli in a flow tank. Urea, lactic acid, succinic acid, and handsweat were attractive to some animals; some simple acids and amino-acid mixtures were weakly attractive; pH changes and sea-water salts were not attractive. Although the groups were similarly maintained and responded with high internal consistency, they differed in responsiveness to different substances. These variations are not easily accounted for as contamination or effects of prior animal experience. A. vulgaris detects many simple organic substances, but the behavioral response is not constant and species-wide; it depends on nonchemical factors. This sensory/behavioral mode presumably suits a nonspecialist predator, and may be widespread among similar asteroids. Individuals attracted to lactic acid could be induced to cling to and evert their stomachs over a sponge soaked in lactic-acid solutions. Copulatory behavior in the octopus consists of a patterned series of movements whose individual functions are not well understood. Observations and experiments on mating in Octopus vulgaris and O. hummelincki from Bimini, Bahamas and Haiti were made over a number of years in the laboratory. The study reveals how the male octopus reverses its spermatophore prior to transferring it to the female. The male’s terminal organ (penis) extrudes the sperm end of the spermatophore as it exits from Needham’s sac up to the cap or filament thread and then, holding onto the cap thread, inserts the ejaculatory end of the spermatophore into the groove of the hectocotylus, thus reversing it. It is hypothesized that the primary function of the cap or filament thread, one part of the spermatophore, is to be a handle by which the reversal and transfer is accomplished. The siphon is merely a conduit through which the terminal organ functions and plays no role whatsoever in either the reversal of the spermatophore or in its insertion into the groove. The stimulus to which the male orients to find the groove of the hectocotylus is the apex of the retracted interbrachial membrane between the third and fourth right arms, which bears a fixed spatial relationship to the origin of the groove. A number of deviations from the successful transfer process, which represent loss of sperm from the reproductive process, are illustrated. Despite these deviations, the delicately balanced integration of the various movements serves to transfer the spermatophore to the female to ensure reproductive success.  相似文献

利用海藻酸钙分别包埋固定小球藻、活性污泥及其两者混合物.研究固定态小球藻与悬浮态小球藻对污水中氮磷营养盐的处理效果,实验结果表明固定态藻对氮磷的去除效果明显优于悬浮态藻,其原因主要由于海藻酸钙凝胶对氮磷的吸附,系统pH值提高引起氨的气提及磷酸盐的沉淀作用.研究固定化藻、同定化活性污泥及共固定化菌藻分别对污水中氮磷营养盐的处理效果,在同等条件下,固定化菌藻对氮磷的去除效果优于固定化活性污泥和固定化藻类.这项研究显示菌藻共生在污水处理中具有较大的潜力.  相似文献

Egg production by Undinula vulgaris, collected off Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, was measured under field and laboratory conditions on 16 occasions from June to December 1991. In situ rates ranged from 0 to 15.7 eggs female-1 d-1, with a mean of 6.4 eggs female-1 d-1, 2.1% female body carbon d-1. Maximum in situ production was 53 eggs female-1 d-1, 17.2% C d-1. Average egg production (Y, eggs female-1 d-1) was related to the concentration of particulate carbon (X, g C l-1) by the Ivlev function, Y=13.9[1-e-0.0097 (x-10)], with R 2=0.96. Individuals with the same feeding history produced more eggs at lower temperatures in the laboratory. Egg production was not significantly correlated with dry weight, and no noticeable temporal trend was found. Despite the elevated habitat temperatures (26 to 27°C) of this subtropical copepod, maximum fecundity of U. vulgaris was comparable to, but average rates were lower than, egg production rates of similarly-sized, temperate and borcal species of the genus Calanus. 采用在不同浓度水芹(Oenanthe javaica)浸出液中纯培养小球藻(Chlorella vulgaris)的方法,研究水芹浸出液对小球藻细胞数量、叶绿素含量和藻细胞超微结构的影响。结果显示,10 g.L-1水芹浸出液对小球藻的生长和叶绿素含量具有明显的促进作用;20 g.L-1水芹浸出液处理组藻细胞数量和叶绿素含量增加持续至第7天,但增幅低于对照组,7 d后抑制作用增强;高浓度(30~50 g.L-1)水芹浸出液对小球藻细胞数量和叶绿素含量的抑制作用在第5天开始变得显著,并随时间延长而加剧,具有浓度效应;经40 g.L-1水芹浸出液处理后,小球藻细胞壁断裂甚至消失,细胞中叶绿体片层肿胀甚至解体,核膜破裂,核质外渗。结果表明水芹浸出液对小球藻具有化感效应,总体呈现低浓度促进、高浓度抑制的规律。  相似文献

The sorption capacity of the microalga, Chlorella vulgaris, was investigated using different metals (Cu, Zn, Cd and Ni), in both monometallic and bimetallic solutions. The final metal concentrations were significantly low. In the case of copper, an acid pretreatment (at pH 3) of the biomass was required to avoid an excessive increase in pH and the subsequent precipitation of metal during tests. This pretreatment was not necessary for the rest of the metals. The study of the influence of pH led to a greater metal uptake at a higher pH, suggesting a clear competition between metal cations and protons during the biosorption process. The biomass concentration was also a relevant variable, and the best sorption capacities were achieved at the lowest biomass concentration. pH also had a great influence on the elution of the metal retained by the biomass. The best recovery yields were obtained for the lower pH of the eluent solution. Sorption isotherms were well fitted to the Langmuir model, for both single-metal and two-metal systems. In both cases, the biomass showed a greater affinity for Cd.  相似文献

Critical loads offer a unique way of evaluating impacts of acid deposition by quantifying environmental sensitivity. The critical loads of acidity for UK peat soils have been based upon an arbitrary reduction in pH of 0.2 units. This chemical shift needs to be better related to adverse effects on sensitive biological receptors. It is known that effective precipitation pH equates closely to soil solution pH, and the latter is directly linkable to biotic effects of pH change. On continuation of a long-term experiment assessing impacts of simulated acid rain on peat microcosms in a realistic outdoor environment, Calluna vulgaris continued to flourish at acid deposition loads well above the existing critical load. Calluna plants were harvested and analysed, and acid deposition treatments to the microcosms continued to allow natural vegetation to regenerate. A diverse mixture of moorland plants and bryophytes established at acidity treatments well above the existing critical load, and only a very high acid load resulted in no natural regeneration. A critical effective rain pH value of 3.6 is suggested as a basis for setting critical loads. At this pH, Calluna grows well, and a healthy diverse vegetation community re-establishes when harvested. It is suggested that the peat critical load should be set at the acid load that, at any specific site, would result in a mean effective precipitation pH of 3.6.  相似文献

The combined effects of two food levels (0.5 x 10(6) and 1.5 x 10(6) cells ml(-1) of Chlorella vulgaris) and five concentrations (0, 0.000625, 0.00125, 0.0025, 0.005 mg l(-1) of HgCl2) of mercury on the population growth of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus was evaluated. The growth experiments were conducted for 18 days at 23+/-1 degrees C under continuous fluorescent illumination. For each food level - heavy metal combination, we maintained 3 replicates. Our data showed that regardless of food level, increase in the heavy metal concentration in the medium resulted in decreased population growth of B. calyciflorus. At any given heavy metal concentration, B. calyciflorus grown under higher food levels had higher population abundance. The rate of population increase was significantly influenced by both the heavy metal concentration and the algal level. The highest population growth rate (0.435+/-0.003 per day) was observed in controls at 1.5 x 10(6) cells ml(-1). The results of this study were discussed in relation to the protective role of algal density against heavy metal toxicity.  相似文献

Differential uptake of [3H]adenine and [3H]thymidine, and incorporation of tritium label into proteins, RNA and DNA as a function of depth, indicate that surface microplankton incorporated most of the assimilated radioisotopes into nucleic acids. Growth processes for deep-sea microplankton were shifted towards higher rates of [3H]-adenine incorporation into RNA compared to rates of thymidine incorporation into DNA. Deep-sea microplankton also diverted a larger portion (up to 80%) of the assimilated tritium into biosynthetic pathways for amino acid and eventual incorporation into proteins. These results imply that protein synthesis is vital for deep-sea microplankton where populations may be stressed by low levels of available nutrients. The rates at which microplankton incorporated [3H]adenine into RNA and DNA, and [3H]thymidine into DNA, suggest that oceanic microplankton are in a transient state of balanced growth, i.e. between two steady-state growth conditions, irrespective of potential growth rates. Our results support the hypothesis that oceanic microplankton are in various growth states.  相似文献
