This paper describes the results of a survey of the North Sea and north Atlantic waters adjacent to the Orkney and Shetland Islands, from 23 May to 9 June, 1973, using simultaneous tows of the prototype Undulating Oceanographic Recorder (UOR) and the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR). The UOR sampled plankton and measured salinity and temperature over its undulation profile from 5 to 65 m in depth. The CPR sampled plankton at a fixed depth of 10 m. Three principal water masses were identified, each with a characteristic plankton community.  相似文献

Growth and metabolism of the winter flounder Pseudopleuronectes americanus were studied in the laboratory at 2°, 5° and 8°C. Dry-weight determinations of growth demonstrated significant direct regressions of growth on temperature. Mean, daily specific growth rates were 10.1%/day at 80°C, 5.8%/day at 50°C, and 2.6%/day at 2°C. Time to metamorphosis was 49 days at 8°C and 80 days at 5°C. Larvae did not survive to metamorphosis at 2°C. Absolute values of routine metabolism expressed in μl of oxygen consumed regressed on body weight were best described by a third-degree polynomial. Larval routine metabolism increased from hatching to metamorphosis, at which time it declined before again increasing. Temperature directly affected routine metabolism. Metabolism on a unit-weight basis decreased with increasing size and was also directly influenced by temperature.  相似文献

The size-specific nutritional conditions of larval sardines, Sardinops melanostictus, from the main Kuroshio Current and its offshore waters off eastern Japan were assessed by lipid analysis. A rapid lipid analysis technique (diagnostic kits for human serum lipids) was used to measure the different lipid components of individual sardine larvae as indicators of their nutritional condition. Size-specific growth trajectories of individual larvae were estimated by the biological intercept method, and the recent daily growth rate of standard length (SL) was calculated from the 3 d outer increment width on the otolith. Relationships between the amount of larval phospholipid (PL; tissue weight indicator) and SL, and the recent daily growth rate of larva (Gr) and SL, could be expressed by the equations PL = 0.459 SL 1.77 and Gr = 0.0809 SL − 0.341, respectively. There was no notable difference in these values between the two survey areas. The relationship between the amount of triglyceride (TG) and SL could be expressed allometrically (TG = 0.013 SL 2.63). The relationship between the index of starvation tolerance (TG/PL) and SL could be expressed by the allometric equation TG/PL = 0.0288 SL 0.865, suggesting that larger sardine have a higher starvation tolerance than smaller sardine. The TG of the 8 to 9 mm SL size-class larvae in the offshore area was higher than in the main Kuroshio Current. To test whether the TG for each larval sardine in the 8 to 9 mm SL size-class could be correlated with variables (temperature, chlorophyll a and distribution density of the sardine larvae) measured at the sampling stations, correlation analyses were performed. A highly significant negative correlation between TG and distribution density of the sardine larvae was found. A density-dependence effect seemed to influence the fluctuation of the larval storage energy component for short-term needs. Received: 12 March 1998 / Accepted: 26 March 1999  相似文献

Juvenile sardine, Sardina pilchardus Walbaum, 1792, were collected off Mallorca, Balearic Islands, during April–July 1989, and were aged by means of daily otolith increments. Growth rates were in the range of values reported for other clupeoids, although lower than those for larvae of the Mediterranean anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus. Hatching dates were back-calculated from the age in days and the date of capture. The data indicated that hatching was continuous, but revealed a low peak in the last half of November 1988 and a second, higher peak in the first half of March of the following year, in accordance with the general cycle of secondary production in this oligotrophic area.  相似文献

In Ireland, mussels on exposed rocky shores constitute an interbreeding mixture of two forms of mussels,Mytilus edulis L. and the Mediterranean musselM. galloprovincialis Lmk. This paper presents an in-depth analysis, carried out between October 1984 and December 1986, of genetic variability at two partially diagnostic loci,Odh andEst-D, in two exposed-shore populations ofMytilus spp. in the west of Ireland. Significant differences at theOdh locus were observed in the genetic composition of adult mussels from different tidal levels. These differences were repeatable whether one was analysing replicate samples at a single point in time, samples collected at different points in time, i.e., in different years, or samples collected from different shores. Mussels recruiting to artificial substrates set out for a period of one month at different tidal levels at one of these sites were also observed to be genetically different; mussels higher up the shore exhibited higher frequencies of those alleles characteristically at high frequency inM. galloprovincialis for both theOdh andEst-D loci. Hence, the genetic differences observed in adult mussels are much more exaggerated in juveniles and are already apparent within the first month of benthic life. Possible reasons for the observed microgeographic differentiation are discussed. It is concluded that the observed genetic differences between mussels at different tidal levels arise either in the pelagic/attachment stage or very shortly after settlement.  相似文献

Samples were taken from a 2 900 m deep permanent station (centred on 54°40N; 12°16W) in the southern Rockall Trough, from November 1975 to September 1980, inclusive. Revision of juvenile size frequencies was necessary after removal of postlarvae of an annual non-viable settlement of Ophiocten gracilis (G. O. Sars) that were mistakenly included in a previous analysis. The present study of the revised data shows that settlement of Ophiura ljungmani (Lyman) occurs in summer when disk-size frequencies are dominated by the newly metamorphosed postlarvae. The likely age composition in larger sizes was suggested from the progression of modes along the size axis in juvenile size classes in consecutive were developed from Gaussian mixtures fitted by constrained computer search using, as starting values, component parameter values suggested from the frequency histograms. Choice between competing solutions was made on the basis both of goodness-of-fit and biological plausibility. However, identification of year-class structure amongst sizes >3 to 4 mm disk diameter remained conjectural owing to the low frequencies of adults in the samples. Comparison of the fitted component-means in the time series suggested a marked seasonal growth pattern, with maximal growth in spring. Probable age composition amongst adult sizes was extrapolated from von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated from the means of juvenile year classes.Communicated by J. Mauchline, Oban  相似文献

Excretion rates of ammonia have been determined for zooplankton off the coasts of Washington and Oregon (USA). Rates varied from 0.16 to 0.60 g-at NH 4 + -N/mg dry weight/day for most planktonic animals, and from 0.02 to 0.06 for jellyfishes. Ammonia concentration in seawater was low in offshore regions. Ammonia released by zooplankton was studied in relation to primary productivity during summer. It was found that, in the Columbia River plume offshore, excreted ammonia contributed about 90% of the total nitrogen requirements of observed production rates. The ammonia-N contribution was 36% in oceanic waters, and was relatively unimportant in the inshore region. A monthly sampling programme was conducted to investigate aspects of the biology of a population of Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) Smooth growth curves were constructed for each year class, and the factors affecting growth rate were considered. Seasonal cycles in flesh weight and calorific content appear to be related to gonal proliferation and subsequent spawning. Recruitment is sporadic and probably depends on the spawning of upstream populations, where conditions are more favourable for larval development. Survivorship curves were constructed for each year class; predation by crabs and gulls appears to account for a large proportion of the observed mortality.  相似文献

The effluent from a Lucknow- based distillery (Mohan Meakin Distillery) was analyzed for physico-chemical and biological parameters of pollution and concentration of potentially toxic heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni and Zn) and the effect of the distillery effluent, as such and on 50% dilution with tap water was studied on seed germination and seedling growth of maize (Zea mays L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.). The effluent was wine red in colour and highly acidic (pH approximately 55) and possessed decaying alcoholic smell. The effluent contained high values of different pollution parameters, particularly total solids, 3450 mgl(-1) (soluble plus suspended solids), alkalinity 1500 mgl(-1), biological oxygen demand (BOD, 1649 mgl(-1)) and chemical oxygen demand (COD, 2036 mgl(-1)). It had very low values of dissolved oxygen (DO, 0.34 mgl(-1)). The heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni and Zn) content, particularly the nickel concentration (0.029 mg l(-1)) was high. Use of the distillery effluent, even on 1:1 dilution with tap water inhibited germination and early seedling growth of maize and rice. In both maize and rice, more so in the former germination % of seeds, length of radicle and plumule and the fresh and dry weight of the seedlings were significantly reduced. The emerging leaves of the seedlings also developed visible effects of toxicity some of which resembled the symptoms of nickel toxicity. Our observations suggest that the effluent, as discharged from the distillery carry a heavy load of pollutants. Its discharge into the river Gomti poses a potential threat to the aquatic life, perticularly during the summer months when the water flow in the river is drastically reduced. The distillery effluentis also harmful for irrigating crops grown along the drain carrying it.  相似文献

Moving and spatial learning are two intertwined processes: (a) changes in movement behavior determine the learning of the spatial environment, and (b) information plays a crucial role in several animal decision-making processes like movement decisions. A useful way to explore the interactions between movement decisions and learning of the spatial environment is by comparing individual behaviors during the different phases of natal dispersal (when individuals move across more or less unknown habitats) with movements and choices of breeders (who repeatedly move within fixed home ranges), that is, by comparing behaviors between individuals who are still acquiring information vs. individuals with a more complete knowledge of their surroundings. When analyzing movement patterns of eagle owls, Bubo bubo, belonging to three status classes (floaters wandering across unknown environments, floaters already settled in temporary settlement areas, and territory owners with a well-established home range), we found that: (1) wandering individuals move faster than when established in a more stable or fixed settlement area, traveling larger and straighter paths with longer move steps; and (2) when floaters settle in a permanent area, then they show movement behavior similar to territory owners. Thus, movement patterns show a transition from exploratory strategies, when animals have incomplete environmental information, to a more familiar way to exploit their activity areas as they get to know the environment better.  相似文献

The surf clam, Spisula solidissima (Dillwyn), population in the estuarine waters of Long Island Sound, New York, USA, was characterized in 1984 and again in 1988 by an age structure restricted to just two age-classes, and an apparent lifespan of only about 10 yr. In the inshore coastal waters off Fire Island, New York, a wide age range from 2 to 22 yr old was present. The age structure at Long Beach, New York, a third geographic region which is coastal but influenced by the Hudson River estuary, was similar to Long Island Sound. Juvenile surf clams grew at similar rates in all three geographic regions. However, adults from the Long Island Sound population grew significantly slower and reached an asymptotic maximum size which was 37% smaller than Fire Island adults. Long Beach adults had intermediate growth rates and maximum sizes. The shells of Long Island Sound clams were also 25% thinner than those from the other two regions. Density dependent effects on growth, evaluated over abundances ranging from 0.5 to 294 ind. m–2, were present but were too small to account for observed regional differences. Results suggest that adult surf clams may be physiologically stressed by the reduced salinity and more extreme temperatures found in estuarine waters.  相似文献

Growth rates of microphagous ciliates (forms which feed primarily on picoplankton-sized prey) were estimated, along with rates of their consumption by copepods, in shipboard experiments conducted in the mesohaline portion of Chesapeake Bay, USA, under contrasting water column conditions in April, June, and August 1987. Estimates were based on temporal changes in cell densities in size-fractionated water samples incubated under in situ conditions. In April, at low temperatures (7 to 10°C) and with oxygen present throughout the water column, similar generation times of ca. 1 to 1.5 d were estimated for surface and deep water (24 m) ciliate populations. In June, water was anoxic below 12 m and a distinct anoxic microphage community grew at about twice the rate of the surface community with generation times of ca. 7 and 14 h, respectively. In August, bottom water was again anoxic, but the sameStrobilidium sp. dominated both surface and deep waters with low or no growth apparent in anoxic waters and a generation time of ca. 8 h in surface waters. Copepod (primarilyAcartia tonsa Dana nauplii) clearance rates for microphagous ciliates in surface waters were 0.11, 0.56, and 0.53 ml h–1 copepod–1 for April, June and August, respectively. Calculation of removal rates, based on average densities, indicated that from 34 to 200% of surface waters were cleared d–1 of microphagous ciliates by copepods.  相似文献

The levels of a wide variety of pharmaceuticals and hormones, in source and potable-water supplies of French drinking water treatment plants, were assessed. In surface waters, 27 of the 51 target compounds were determined at least once. Paracetamol, salicylic acid and carbamazepine were quantified in more than 80% of samples. The highest concentration of 71 ng/L was observed for paracetamol. Twelve other substances were widely found in the surface waters studied, contaminating between 33 and 80% of the samples. These compounds include analgesics, psychotropic drugs, antibiotics and beta-blockers consistent with the French consumption, as well as natural hormones (oestrone, progesterone and androgens) and synthetic progestatives. In drinking water supplies, 25 compounds were also present, salicylic acid being the most frequently detected. Carbamazepine and the β-blocker atenolol found at lower levels (maximum 2 ng/L), are also present in more than 30% of the contaminated drinking waters. The pharmaceuticals exhibit different reactivity towards the treatments, while progestagens and androgens seem resistant to most of them. The effectiveness of the treatments is discussed, as well as the consequences of the presence of all these compounds on human health. This is the first time that such a long list of compounds (51) is proposed to assessment, and consequently this study provides the first data on pharmaceuticals and steroids occurrences in French drinking waters and represents a basis for the assessment of risks for humans. Moreover, at the international level, this is the first time that so many substances are quantified in drinking water, due to the very low detection limits, especially in the case of the hormones.  相似文献

The long-distance dispersal of larvae provides important linkages between populations of reef-building corals and is a critical part of coral biology. Some coral planulae have symbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium spp.) that probably provide energy in addition to the lipids provisioned within the egg. However, our understanding of the influence of symbionts on the energy metabolism and survivorship of planulae remains limited. This study examines the relative roles of symbiotic dinoflagellate photosynthesis and stored lipid content in the survivorship of the developing stages of the corals Pocillopora damicornis and Montipora digitata. We found that survivorship decreased under dark conditions (i.e. no photosynthetic activity) for P. damicornis and M. digitata at 31 and 22 days after release/spawning, respectively. The lipid content of P. damicornis and M. digitata planulae showed a significant decrease, at a higher rate, under dark conditions, when compared with light conditions. When converted to energy equivalents, the available energy provided by the depletion of lipids could account for 41.9 and 84.7% of larval metabolism for P. damicornis (by day 31) and 38.4 and 90.1% for M. digitata (by day 21) under light and dark conditions, respectively. This finding indicates that not all energy requirements of the larvae are met by lipids: energy is also sourced from the photosynthetic activities of the symbiotic dinoflagellates within these larvae, especially under light conditions. In addition, the amounts of three main lipid classes (wax esters, triglycerides, and phospholipids) decreased throughout the experiment in the planulae of both species, with the wax ester content decreasing more rapidly under dark conditions than under light conditions. The observations that the planulae of both species derive considerable amounts of energy from wax esters, and that symbiotic dinoflagellates enable larvae to use their stores at lower rates, suggested that symbiotic dinoflagellates have the potential to extend larval life under light conditions.  相似文献

为了解入侵植物水浮莲在水生环境中的入侵和扩散规律,本文通过田间水稻田实验,按照添加系列设计方法研究不同密度下水浮莲幼苗的形态和生长反应,以及对土壤养分的影响。结果表明,不同种植密度下水浮莲在母株株高、母株叶片数、分蘖能力、开花株数和死亡株数生长动态具有明显的差异。水浮莲形态特征,随种植密度降低分蘖等级和数量显著增加,密度60株时最大为29.45株·基株-1,360株时最小为1.10株·基株-1;母株株高总体上呈现出逐渐降低的趋势,而根长的变化规律不明显;中等种植密度的母株叶片数明显大于低等和高等密度的;植株开花与死亡株数多数显著增加;水浮莲出现有性和无性繁殖,但无性繁殖占绝对优势。水浮莲生物量,随种植密度降低总生物量显著增加,60株时最大为31.18 g·基株-1,360株时最小为5.64 g·基株-1;母株生物量总、花、叶和根生物量总体上逐渐降低,而分蘖植株总、叶、花和根生物量显著增加。水浮莲生长需要消耗大量的土壤养分,其中对有机质和速效钾消耗是最大的,分别达到8.55~21.56 g·kg-1和649.43~679.45 mg·kg-1;随种植密度降低水浮莲对土壤有机质、氮、磷和钾的吸收绝大多数显著增加。不同种植密度下水浮莲在形态、生长、繁殖以及对土壤养分影响的差异,可能是由其最初种植密度形成不同的种内竞争强度造成的。  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to examine the morphology and hatching success of eggs, either spawned by freshly caught planktonic copepods or recovered from bottom sediments in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Collections were made between August 1992 and September 1995. Eggs of nine species were described and these differed in their diameter, color and surface attributes. Three types of eggs were distinguished: subitaneous, diapause, and delayed-hatching. Three species, Labidocera aestiva Wheeler, Acartia tonsa Dana, and Centropages velificatus (Oliveira) produced only subitaneous eggs. Hatching success varied greatly among these species. Two species, Labidocera mirabilis Fleminger and Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) produced diapause eggs and subitaneous eggs. The length of the refractory phase of the diapause eggs differed greatly both within and between these two species. A third type of dormant egg, delayed-hatching, was recognized in Labidocera scotti Giesbrecht and Pontella meadi Wheeler. The existence of delayed-hatching eggs may be an adaptive response of subtropical species to less seasonal fluctuation. Based upon morphological characteristics of the eggs and rearing of nauplii to an identifiable stage, benthic dormant eggs of eight species of calanoid copepods were also identified. 在氮限制型富营养化湖泊中,沉积多磷酸盐(Poly-P)可以用来示踪营养盐磷的输入和湖泊的富营养化过程。太湖是一个典型的磷限制型富营养化湖泊,通过对太湖表层沉积物中总有机碳(TOC)、总氮(TN)、总磷(TP)、氢氧化钠可提取磷(NaOH-P)以及Poly-P的提取分析,初步探讨了太湖营养盐磷输入的历史记录,并揭示了该湖Poly-P的主要来源和保存机制。太湖Poly-P的质量浓度较低,变化范围为0.004~0.065mg·g-1。NaOH-P占TP组成的22%,是太湖沉积物总磷的主要组成部分之一。结果显示,在湖泊水体藻类生物量较大和NaOH-P是沉积物TP重要组成部分的磷限制型湖泊中,Poly-P也是沉积物磷汇组成的一个重要部分,同时还是一个可以反映由人为磷输入增大导致湖泊富营养化程度加剧的敏感指标。  相似文献

The spider crabHyas araneus (L.) was collected from the North Sea in winter 1986–1987 and reared in the laboratory from hatching of the Zoea I (ZI) through the first juvenile instar (CI). Within a given moult cycle, individuals of the same age were sampled in intervals of 2 (ZI, ZII, CI) or 3 d (megalopa) for analysis of dry weight (W), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), protein, DNA, and RNA. Lipid was calculated from C. Biomass, growth rate and nucleic acid contents showed high variability during each moult cycle and between instars. Instantaneous growth rates of C were high in postmoult and intermoult, and low in the premoult period of each moult cycle. A shift was observed from high rates of lipid accumulation in the postmoult and intermoult stages to proportionally increasing protein accumulation during late premoult (ZI), or throughout a major part of the remaining moult cycle (in all other instars). DNA was accumulated throughout the ZI and ZII instars, but decreased in late premoult megalopa. It increased again from late intermoult through intermediate premoult in juveniles. RNA increased continuously during ZI and ZII, and decreased in the megalopa, almost to levels that had been found immediately after hatching. In juveniles, variation in RNA followed closely those in DNA. Cell multiplication (expressed by DNA increase) dominated over increase in cell size (defined by the C/DNA ratio) during the zoeal instars and in postmoult through early intermoult in the megalopa and CI. When specific (C-related) RNA values and RNA/DNA ratios were compared with instantaneous growth rates in C and N, no general correspondence was detected. The only significant relationship between specific RNA values and instantaneous C or N growth rates was found in the megalopa. The same held for the relationship between the RNA/DNA ratio and growth. Here, in addition to the megalopa, a correspondence with C growth was also found in the CI instar. Our results suggest that variation in nucleic acids may provide useful insights into mechanisms of growth on the cellular level (cell multiplication vs cell enlargement). However, lack of general correlation with variation in growth rates ofH. araneus larvae shows that the use of nucleic acids as a measure of growth is probably based upon too simplistic assumptions; it may not yield reliable predictions, when growth is associated with developmental events.  相似文献
