In the Scotia Sea, the larvae of Thysanoessa macrura G.O. Sars, 1885 were scarce in spring (September 27 to October 6, 1971) and mainly present at the Calyptopis I stage, while in summer (December 17, 1974 to January 3, 1975) they were much more abundant and much further developed (up to Furcilia VI). The spawning season commences as early as September and, as indicated by the presence of numerous nauplii and metanauplii in summer, is rather long. T. macrura begins to spawn much earlier in West-Wind-Drift waters than in waters of the Weddell Sea. It starts to spawn simultaneously with Euphausia frigida and E. triacantha, but significantly earlier than E. superba. These timings of the breeding process are related to differential biogeographical characteristics of these species. Plankton collections made at depths of 500 or 1000 m have, for T. macrura, revealed a developmental ascent analogous to that of E. superba. Ontogenetical deep-water migrations are, consequently, characteristic not only for E. superba, but also for other Antarctic euphausiids (in particular E. frigida, but possibly not for inshore E. crystallorophias) and, as correctly postulated by several other investigators, for all oceanic euphausiid species.  相似文献

Freshly caught male and female Euphausia superba from the same swarm exhibited different rates of mortality subsequent to capture. Mortality was significantly higher for reproductive males (100%, n=68) than for females (3%, n=186) within the first 3 d of capture. Total lipid and triacylglycerol levels in male, female and juvenile Euphausia superba were analysed and compared. All reproductive male krill analysed from this swarm had low lipid levels (1 to 3% dry weight) with negligible triacylglycerol stores (0 to 2% of total lipid). Somatic lipid stores in female and juvenile krill ranged from 8 to 30% of which up to 40% was triacylglycerol. The levels of algal sterols in the digestive gland of males, females and juveniles indicate that all krill had been feeding recently. An analysis of the sex ratio of krill catches derived from data collected over seven summers from the Prydz Bay region showed a decrease in the proportion of males with increasing size. There was a sharp decline in numbers of male krill once they attained a length of 51 to 55 mm. Low lipid levels in redroductive male krill may be due to reproductive costs. The resulting low storage-lipid levels are accompanied by high mortality in male krill.  相似文献

The MULTIFAN method of Fournier et al. was used to analyse a series of monthly length-frequency distributions of deep-water royal red prawns (Haliporoides sibogae de Man, 1907, Solenoceridae) for the estimation of growth, mortality and yield-per-recruit. Length data were collected from commercial catches made between Latitude 33° and 35°S from November 1988 to May 1990. MULTIFAN distinguished six cohorts in the royal red prawn population, aged at 6 mo intervals from about 1.5 to 4 yr. Most prawns were between 2 and 3 yr of age. Females and males were fully recruited at 23.1 and 21.5 mm carapace length (CL) respectively, when about 2 yr old. Females grew faster and reached larger sizes at age than males (growth coefficient, K=0.37 yr-1 and asymptotic length, L =48.3 mm CL for females, and K=0.49 yr-1 and L =33.5 mm CL for males). Total mortality (Z) was estimated at 1.6 and 1.2 yr-1 for females and males, respectively. Approximate values for natural mortality (M) ranged from 0.6 to 0.7 yr-1 for females, and from 0.4 to 0.8 yr-1 for males. Analysis of yield-per-recruit suggested that while the current yield could possibly be increased by decreasing the length at first capture (L c ), there seems to be little potential for an increase in yield from increased fishing effort in the area currently fished.  相似文献

Distribution and abundance as a function of depth, and population parameters such as sex and size structure of the population and aspects of reproductive biology have been studied in the deep-sea polychelid lobsters Polycheles typhlops and Stereomastis sculpta. Samples were taken by otter trawl in the Balearic Sea, a deepsea basin in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea from 1985 to 1989. In both species the largest size classes were dominated by females. In S. sculpta, male and female sizes were very similar. In P. typhlops, ovigerous females and those with external spermatophores were 23 and 25 mm in carapace length (CL), respectively; males with external spermatophores were 17 mm in CL. In S. sculpta, ovigerous females and those with external spermatophores were 24 and 19 mm CL, respectively, and males with external spermatophores 19 mm CL. Highest densities of P. typhlops occurred along the middle slope at depths between 500 and 1000 m. Only small-sized individuals were found at the deepest depths sampled; some recruitment must therefore occur in waters much deeper than those usually inhabited by the adult population. The sex-ratio was 1:1 in most samples, but in some of the shallowest samples females predominated. The depth distribution range of S. sculpta was 981 to 2253 m: densities clearly increased with increasing depth. There were no apparent variations in size distribution as a function of depth. Since very few adult males and females were captured, the population in the survey area would seem to be comprised mainly of juveniles. As a function of depth, females were numerically dominant only in some of the shallowest samples taken in the distribution range of this species. There is strict habitat partitioning between the two species. In both species, the variation in the sex-ratio as a function of depth suggests differential migration between the sexes, probably related to egg incubation and hatching.  相似文献

The spanner crab (Ranina ranina) is a widespread and abundant brachyuran in offshore sand substrata of the Indo-Pacific region. Little is known of this species biology, population dynamics and ecology, despite it being the target of commercial fishing operations in many areas. Previous studies of R. ranina growth using length-frequency analysis of samples collected with commercial fishing gear have derived widely divergent estimates of growth parameters. The estimated time taken to reach 100 mm rostral carapace length (minimum legally exploited size in Queensland, Australia) in those studies has ranged from 1.75 to 8.83 years for females and from 1.08 to 3.58 years for males. Our data show that the commercial fishing apparatus used in those studies is size selective and catches only adult crabs. The resulting size bias in samples collected using that apparatus precludes the application of length-frequency-based techniques to estimate growth parameters from those samples. We devised a new dredge to collect samples of juvenile R. ranina and to calculate juvenile growth rates from modal progression in those samples. We combined those data with estimated mean maximum lengths (L) of 121.7 mm for females and 155.9 mm for males from commercial catch data to model other von Bertalanffy growth parameters using bootstrap methods. Those modelled parameters (K=0.29, T0=–0.24 for females; K=0.23, T0=–0.25 for males) indicate that R. ranina grows more slowly than most previous estimates suggest, with females requiring an average of 6.35 years and males 4.31 years to reach 100 mm rostral carapace length. This slow growth is consistent with the slow metabolism of R. ranina, and indicates that this species would be likely to recover slowly from overexploitation.Communicated by G.F. Stomach contents from 809 king crabs, Paralithodes camtschatica (Tilesius), from 6 areas near Kodiak Island, Alaska, and 9 sampling periods (1978–1979) were exammed quantitatively; 713 (88%) contained food. Mollusca (mainly the bivalves Nuculana spp., Nucula tenuis, and Macoma spp.) and Crustacea (mainly barnacles) were the dominant food groups in terms of percentage wet weight and frequency of occurrence; fishes were the next most important group of prey. No significant differences in feeding between sexes occurred; however, significant differences were apparent in the quantity of food consumed from different sampling periods, areas, depths, size groups, and crab molt-classes. Consumption was greater in spring and summer and in offshore locations at depths of 126 to 150 m. In addition, king crabs <140 mm carapace length (CL) consumed more food than crabs 140 mm CL. Adult, newshell (individuals that molted during the last molting period) females greater than 95 mm CL, and newshell males greater than 100 mm CL, each contained more food than did juvenile, newshell females <120 mm CL.Contribution No. 449, Institute of Marine Science, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska 99701, USA  相似文献

Cassidulus mitis Krau, 1954 is an endemic species from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To study the reproductive cycle of this species, samples were collected at Praia Vermelha, in Guanabara Bay, from October 1998 to April 2000. The sex ratio for C. mitis was 1:1, and reproduction occurred throughout the year. The gonadal index of males was greater than that of females. Five gametogenic stages were identified in males: early growth, premature, mature, partially spawned and early growth with a partially spawned stage. There were no spent or recovery stages such as those seen in females. Females had six gametogenic stages: recovery, early growth, premature, mature, partially spawned and spent stage; there was no early growth with a partially spawned stage as there was in males. The mean oocyte diameter was 382 m (SD=49 m), and the mean number of juveniles per female was 100 individuals (SD=108). The anterior gonads were frequently smaller than the posterior ones, and there were differences in the gametogenic stages between the anterior and posterior gonads. First sexual maturation occurred in individuals with a diameter of 17 mm. The intestinal wet weight was two- to threefold higher than the test wet weight. This may indicate that C. mitis uses its intestine as a weight belt to avoid displacement from the substratum.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

Cover : Diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapin) inhabit brackish waters throughout the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. In parts of the turtle's range, juveniles (pictured) and adult males that inadvertently enter commercial crab traps typically drown, whereas the larger carapace of adult females excludes them from traps. On pages 1268‐1277, Wolak et al. document sex‐speci. c changes in carapace length and width in populations that co‐occur with commercial crab traps. Th ese changes have not been observed in contemporary and historic populations in areas without crab trapping.  相似文献

Male Emerita asiatica Milne Edwards are smaller than females. The secondary sexual characters of males and females are described in detail. Applying the method of Wenner (1972), sex ratio is calculated. The overlap in size range between males and females is too wide to suggest sex reversal. An analysis of secondary sexual characters in post-larval juveniles during megalopa settlement corroborates the view that males and females develop separately from the megalopa. The males acquire their sexual maturity soon after metamorphosis from the megalopa stage, whereas the females attain their sexual maturity only after considerable body growth. the males continue to grow to attain a maximum carapace length of 11 mm; they do not show any tendency towards changing their sex. This is evidenced by the fact that the weight increase of the gonadal apparatus is directly related to the increase in the male carapace length (CL) and body weight. On the other hand, retention of larval characters such as short eye stalk, toothless chelae of the fifth leg (in males up to 5 mm CL), together with the very small size suggest that the males are neotenic. Only males up to 5 mm CL were found to take part in mating. During mating, as many as 5 tiny males deposit their spermatophores in the pleopodal region of one female. This type of mating assures effective transfer of spermatophores in the turbulent environment inhabited. Spermatophores are pedunculate and embedded in a gelatinous matrix to form a long ribbon. There are two types of spermatophores in the ribbon, and they differ in detail from those of other anomuran species. The spermatozoa are rod-like, with a club-shaped acrosomal head. Five spines originate from the junction between head and body. The mode of sperm release from the spermatophores is described; oviducal secretion may be responsible for opening the spermatophore.  相似文献

The abundance and vertical distribution pattern of a halocyprid ostracod,Conchoecia pseudodiscophora, were investigated in the Japan Sea in 1985, 1987 and 1989. Vertical sampling from 500 m depth to the surface in the water around Yamato Rise revealed that this ostracod was second in dominance by number and third to fourth by biomass of the total zooplankton collected with a 0.35 mm mesh Norpac net. Horizontal net tows in Toyama Bay indicated that the major population ofC. pseudodiscophora was distributed below 250 to 300 m depth. No diel migration pattern was evident. Its contribution to total zooplankton there was 5 to 10% or more in terms of biomass. A total of five subadult instars (II to VI) and adult males and females were identified from instar analysis based on sizes and morphological characteristics of specimens collected with 0.10 mm mesh Norpac nets. Data on body length, wet weight and dry weight of each instar are presented. Carbon content of 35 to 48% of dry weight, and nitrogen content of 5.3 to 7.3% of dry weight, were recorded on fresh, freeze-dried specimens of selected instars (subadult Instars IV to VI, adult females). Water and ash contents of mixed specimens of these four instars were 76% of wet weight and 25% of dry weight, respectively. Feasibility of laboratory maintenance ofC. pseudodiscophora was tested, and it produced characteristic J shaped faecal pellets. Oxygen consumption rates of subadult instars V and VI, and adult female ranged 0.011 to 0.021µl O2 ind.–1 h–1 at 1 °C, or 2.9 to 6.1µl O2 (mg body N)–0.85 h–1 in terms of Adjusted Metabolic Rate (AMRo 2). There was no appreciable metabolic reduction inC. pseudodiscophora compared to other ostracods, despite their mesopelagic life mode. Subdominance in total zooplankton and nonreduced metabolic activity ofC. pseudodiscophora suggest that this species may be an important link in mesopelagic energy-flow and matter cycling in the Japan Sea.  相似文献

Panulirus penicillatus (Olivier, 1791) (Decapoda: Palinuridae) is the most common spiny lobster in the Red Sea and is widely distributed in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Lobsters (n=377) were collected on four occasions during 1986 on the coral reef at Dahab, Sinai, Egypt. Average size of the collected individuals was 70.5±24.6 mm carapace length (CL) for males and 63.2±15.9 mm CL for females. The sex ratio was 1:1.64 males to females. Length increment per molt was inversely correlated with size and ranged from 2.1 mm per molt in the 40 to 50 mm CL size class to less than 1 mm in the 60 to 70 mm CL size class. Average intermolt period was ca. 136 d for all size classes. The relationship between carapace length and body weight was expressed by the equation:W b=6.43 × 10–4 × (CL)2.89.P. penicillatus from Dahab differ in size, sex ratio and growth rate compared to other palinurid populations throughout their range. This might represent the effect of isolation and location at the edge of the geographical range for this species. It may also indicate an adaptation to their unique habitat in the coral reef in comparison to other palinurid species.  相似文献

Summary Female northern harriers Circus cyaneus are polygynous, marsh-nesting raptors, whose mate choices are enigmatic. I determined the mate choice cues employed by females by correlating the order in which males were chosen with characters that 1) significantly influenced reproductive success; 2) were assessable prior to settlement; and 3) varied between breeding situations. Only nest sites and male provisioning performance met all these conditions: wet nest sites significantly (P<0.05) increased nest survival and high provisioning rates significantly (P<0.01) enhanced brood survival. The order in which females settled was strongly correlated with provisioning performance in both years (r s -0.65, and r s -0.84), but not with nest site quality. Females thus apperared to choose males principally on provisioning performance. Despite using the same cue, however, females choosing mated males reared only 0.28 young for every nestling raised by concurrently settling monogamous females (the lowest ratio recorded for any avian species). Extrapolation of male courtship provisioning patterns from clutch sizes and laying date indicated that females received similar proportions prior to and during egg-laying, but that males later preferentially fed females. Secondary females therefore chose mated males on the basis of a temporally changing and unreliable cue. The polyterritoriality, cooperative harems, skewed sex ratio, and sexy-son hypotheses were all inadequate in explaining polygyny in harriers. Female choice of mated males among harriers is best explained by the deceitful provisioning of food by males.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on molting, growth, and maturation rates was studied on laboratory-maintained Euphausia superba. The length of intermolt periods (IMP's) was inversely proportional to temperature (20.10 d, SD=1.60, at 0.12°C; 16.87 d, SD=1.68, at 0.97°C; and 12.48 d, SD=0.90, at 4.48°C), and directly proportional to krill size at 0.12°C and 0.97°C. For individually maintained krill the maximum growth rate at 4.48°C (0.068 mm d-1) was nearly twice that at 0.68°C (0.037 mm d-1). There was no observable temperature effect on maturation rates. The maturation changes of juveniles at all temperatures indicated that more than two years are probably required to reach maturity. Mature males and females regressed to immature forms, suggesting that E. superba may reproduce in successive years. These results and previously reported field and laboratory data for E. superba and other euphausiid species suggest a 4+ year life span for this species. This work was supported by NSF grant DPP 76-23437  相似文献

Abstract: Juvenile growth rate and adult body size are important components of life‐history strategies because of their direct impact on fitness. The diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) is a sexually dimorphic, long‐lived turtle inhabiting brackish waters throughout the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. In parts of its range, terrapins face anthropogenically imposed mortality: juveniles of both sexes inadvertently enter commercial crab traps and drown. For adult females, the carapace eventually grows large enough that they cannot enter traps, whereas males almost never reach that critical size. We compared age structure, carapace dimensions, growth curves, and indices of sexual dimorphism for a Chesapeake Bay population of terrapins (where mortality of turtles is high due to crab traps) with contemporary terrapins from Long Island Sound and museum specimens from Chesapeake Bay (neither group subject to commercial crab traps). We also calculated the allochronic and synchronic rates of evolutionary change (haldanes) for males and females to measure the rate of trait change in a population or between populations, respectively. We found a dramatic shift to a younger male age structure, a decrease in the length of time to terminal female carapace size, a 15% increase in female carapace width, and an increase in sexual dimorphism in Chesapeake Bay. In a new twist, our results implicate a fishery in the selective increase in size of a reptilian bycatch species. These sex‐specific changes in life history and demography have implications for population viability that need to be considered when addressing conservation of this threatened turtle.  相似文献

The red mullet Mullus surmuletus is one of the main target species of the trawling fishery along the continental shelf off the Island of Majorca. The size distribution of the catches, and the reproduction, age and growth of this species have been studied based on sampling carried out from 1990 to 1992. The length range of the catches was between 10 and 32 cm, with a main distribution between 15 and 20 cm, but this included small specimens (recruits of 10 to 11 cm) from August. In the >19 cm length-class, females clearly dominated. Monthly variations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and in the percentage of mature specimens showed that males spawn from December to June, whereas the reproductive activity of the females centres around spring. Fifty percent of males and females mature at 15 and 16.8 cm, respectively, corresponding to 1 yr of age. Otolith age-readings indicate that the population exploited in the trawl fishery consists of six age-groups, including a very high proportion of individuals between 0 and 4 yr old. Population growth curves revealed that females grow comparatively slowly over a longer period of time and attain greater asymptotic sizes than males. The growth parameters for the whole population are: asymptotic length, L =31.28 cm; growth coefficient, K=0.211 yr-1; theoretical age when length is zero, t 0=-2.348 yr.  相似文献

The protobranch bivalve Solemya velum Say, 1822 has large gills, which harbor chemolithoautotrophic bacteria that supply the majority of the clams organic carbon. A substantial portion of the CO2, O2, H2S, and other nutrients necessary for symbiont autotrophy and host heterotrophy are acquired from the environment through the gills, whose large size may be necessary to facilitate the acquisition of sufficient O2 from S. velums habitat to meet the combined demands of the host and symbionts. Large gills may also result in an oversupply of CO2, which may in turn be responsible for the isotopically depleted 13C values observed in S. velum biomass (–31 to –34). Alternatively, gill hypertrophy may simply be an adaptation to house a large population of symbionts adjacent to their environmental source of dissolved gases and other nutrients. To better understand gill function in this symbiosis, gill weights, gill surface areas, and foot 13C values were measured as a function of total weights. S. velum gill weights were found to be a substantial portion of total clam weight, averaging 38% of wet weight, compared to nonsymbiotic protobranch bivalves Yoldia limatula Say, 1831 (5%) and Nucula proxima Say, 1822 (11%). Gill weights are a smaller percentage of total weight in larger individuals; the allometric equation for gill weight (G) as a function of total weight (M) is G=0.26M0.85. Dry weights scale similarly. Gill surface areas are immense; the average gill surface area measured was 107 cm2 g–1 total soft tissue wet weight, the highest value for any marine invertebrate. Gill surface area (SA) also scales with size (SA=69.8M0.85). When gill surface areas were calculated with respect to gill wet weights, they did not scale with size. The 13C values do not scale with size either, consistent with high rates of CO2 supply at all sizes. Extraordinarily high rates of CO2 supply relative to demand are supported by a model for CO2 delivery based on Ficks law and the allometric relationship between surface areas and total weight, consistent with a role for large gill surface areas in the generation of isotopically depleted tissue 13C values.Communicated by J. The seasonal abundance, distribution, maturity, growth and population dynamics of the euphausiidsThysanoessa raschi (M. Sars, 1864),T. inermis (Krøyer, 1846) andMeganyctiphanes norvegica (M. Sars, 1857) were studied in Ísafjord-deep, a fjord in northwest Iceland, from February 1987 to February 1988. Sampling was made at nine stations along the length of the fjord at approximately monthly intervals, along with hydrographic measurements and water sampling for nutrient analysis and measurements of chlorophylla concentrations. Spring warming of the water began in late May and maximum temperatures (8° to 10°C) were observed in late July–September. The phytoplankton spring-bloom started in early April, and the highest chlorophylla levels were measured in early May (7.0 mg m–3). A small increase was observed in the chlorophylla content in August. The greatest abundance of juveniles and males and females of all three species was observed during January and February 1988, during which period the euphausiids were concentrated in the middle and inner parts of the fjord. Euphausiid eggs were first recorded in the plankton in mid-May, and the greatest abundance ofThysanoessa spp. larvae occurred at the end of May. Larvae ofM. norvegica were not observed in Ísafjord-deep, indicating that recruitment of this species was occurring from outside the fjord.T. raschi andT. inermis had a life span of just over 2 yr; the life span ofM. norvegica was more difficult to determine. Almost all femaleT. raschi were mature at the age of 1 yr, while mostT. inermis females appeared not to mature until 2 yr of age. Most males of both species took part in breeding at 1 yr of age. The maximum carapace length ofT. raschi andT. inermis was 8 to 9 and 9 to 10 mm, respectively. The largestM. norvegica had a carapace length of 9 to 10 mm. The spawning of the euphausiids in Ísafjord-deep appeared to be closely related to the phytoplankton spring bloom; water temperature appeared to have no influence on spawning.  相似文献

Observations have been made on the locomotory behaviour and swimming performances of the Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus (L.), fitted with an acoustic transmitter ventrally under the cephalothorax. The walking behaviour of adult males (44 mm carapace length) appeared to be unaffected, but the tag caused significant reductions in certain measures of tail-flip swimming performance such as swimming speed and endurance. Flume-tank experiments in low water currents suggested that the transmitter would increase hydrodynamic drag during swimming by 9 to 32%, depending on lobster size. Given the weight and dimensions of the acoustic transmitters currently available, it is considered advisable to confine acoustic tracking studies to relatively large N. norvegicus.Correspondence to: C. Adult euphausiids are difficult to capture with the nets typically used by oceanographers due in part to avoidance of the net. A cruise of the Southern Ocean GLOBEC program (NBP0103) in April/May 2001 permitted an evaluation of the efficacy of a high-powered strobe light (150 W) mounted on a 1-m2 multiple opening/closing net and environmental sampling system (MOCNESS) in reducing net avoidance. Three horizontal tows were made in Laubeuf Fjord, Marguerite Bay (western Antarctic Peninsula, 67.89°S; 68.30 W) on 28–29 May in an area that had a high abundance of adult krill (mostly Euphausia superba, Dana and a few E. crystallorophias, Holt and Tattersall). Each tow consisted of a series of paired down and up casts through a set depth interval (e.g. 50–90 m), with each successive net (335 µm mesh) sampling both a down and up cast. The strobe light was either on or off while each net was open, and when on, the light flashed at 4-s intervals. During a tow, four of the eight nets sampled with the strobe flashing and four sampled with the strobe off, in a random sequence. Total zooplankton displacement volume was significantly higher (P<0.05), on average by a factor of ~1.5, when the strobe light was on. The increased biovolume was due to the enhanced catch (factor of ~2) of adult krill (15–60 mm length). There was no enhanced catch of smaller krill (5–15 mm length: a mixture of E. superba, E. crystallorophias, and Thysanoessa macrura, GO Sars). In addition, the average length of the large krill fraction was not changed substantially with the strobe light on. These results suggest that krill avoidance of nets can be overcome by intense strobe lighting.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00227-003-1228-z.Communicated by J.P.
