The toxicity and toxic potential of fly ash were assessed, using rainbow trout yolk sac fry. In contrast to fly ash itself, extracts of fly ash were extremely toxic, producing typical toxicopathological features of TCDD-intoxication. By comparison with earlier experiments using pure 2,3,7,8-TCDD, the toxic potential of fly ash was roughly estimated to be 75–125 ng.g?1 toxic aequivalents TCDD. Obviously, this toxic potential is attributable for a minor part to 2,3,7,8-TCDD and for the greater part to the other chlorinated dioxin congeners and the dibenzofurans, present in fly ash.  相似文献

The toxicity of nine stable products of the biodegradation of fluoranthene with the pure bacterial strain Pasteurella sp. IFA was studied. For their quantification, an improved analytical procedure with two-step liquid-liquid extraction, derivatisation and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric detection was used. Growth inhibition and immobility tests for fluoranthene and its metabolites were carried out using algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus), bacteria (Pseudomonas putida) and crustaceans (Daphnia magna and Thamnocephalus platyurus). Tests using the alga S. subspicatus revealed that with the exception of 9-hydroxyfluorene, which was only four times less toxic than fluoranthene, all the other metabolites were 37 to approximately 3000 times less toxic than the parent material. P. putida cells were resistant to fluoranthene and its primary metabolites, but were inhibited by low molecular weight intermediates, especially benzoic acid. Fluoranthene was not toxic to T. Platyurus, but was toxic to D. magna. Its primary metabolites (including 9-fluorenone and 9-hydroxyfluorene) were toxic to D. magna, and a low molecular weight metabolite (2-carboxybenzaldehyde) was highly toxic to T. platyurus.  相似文献

The discrimination of excess toxicity from narcotic effect plays a crucial role in the study of modes of toxic action for organic compounds. In this paper, the toxicity data of 758 chemicals to Daphnia magna and 993 chemicals to Tetrahymena pyriformis were used to investigate the excess toxicity. The result showed that mode of toxic action of chemicals is species dependent. The toxic ratio (TR) calculated from baseline model over the experimentally determined values showed that some classes (e.g. alkanes, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, esters and benzenes) shared same modes of toxic action to both D. magna and T. pyriformis. However, some classes may share different modes of toxic action to T. pyriformis and D. magna (e.g. anilines and their derivatives). For the interspecies comparison, same reference threshold need to be used between species toxicity. The excess toxicity indicates that toxicity enhancement is driven by reactive or specific toxicity. However, not all the reactive compounds exhibit excess toxicity. In theory, the TR threshold should not be related with the experimental uncertainty. The experimental uncertainty only brings the difficulty for discriminating the toxic category of chemicals. The real threshold of excess toxicity which is used to identify baseline from reactive chemicals should be based on the critical concentration difference inside body, rather than critical concentration outside body (i.e. EC50 or IGC50). The experimental bioconcentration factors can be greatly different from predicted bioconcentration factors, resulting in different toxic ratios and leading to mis-classification of toxic category and outliers.  相似文献

In the present study, the toxic effects of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), 2,6-dinitrotoluene (2,6-DNT) and a selection of their respective metabolites were examined and compared to 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) using the 15-min Microtox (Vibrio fischen) and 96-h freshwater green alga (Selenastrum capricomutum) growth inhibition tests. All of the compounds tested were less toxic than TNT. Using the Microtox assay, 2,6-DNT was more toxic than 2,4-DNT and the order of toxicity for 2,6-DNT and its metabolites was: 2,6-DNT > or = 2A-6NT > 2,6-DAT; whereas that for 2,4-DNT was: 4A-2NT > 2A-4NT > 2,4-DNT > 2,4-DAT. For the algal test, 2,4-DNT was more toxic than 2,6-DNT and the order of toxicity for 2,4-DNT and its metabolites was: 2,4-DNT > 2,4-DAT approximately equal to 4A-2NT = 2A-4NT. The order of toxicity for 2,6-DNT and its reduced metabolites using the algal test was very similar to the Microtox bioassay. These results demonstrate that the reduced metabolites of 2,6-DNT tested in this study were less toxic than that of the parent compound, but certain partially reduced metabolites of 2,4-DNT can be more toxic than the parent molecule. These data put into question the general hypothesis that reductive metabolism of nitro-aromatics is associated with a sequential detoxification process.  相似文献

This work demonstrates the success of a recently developed technique in chemical amplification, non-biological inhibition-based sensing (NIBS), for the detection of toxic arsenic compounds. Screening for toxic arsenic compounds is especially important due to their prevalence in wastewater and water sources. The detection method presented in this work amplifies the chemical response of toxic arsenic compounds by developing a sensor chemistry where the analyte inhibits, rather than enhances, the rate of a catalytic reaction. This technique mimics the work done with enzyme inhibition; however, using non-biological molecules allows for selective detection without the shelf-life issue associated with biological molecules. Using NIBS we find that we can enhance the sensitivity of the system by two orders of magnitude with no apparent loss in selectivity. This work demonstrates the versatility of NIBS, showing that the technique can be of general use for the detection of toxic compounds.  相似文献

A toxicity test using spore release of the aquatic green alga, Ulva, was developed and evaluated by assessing the toxicity of different organic and inorganic chemicals and elutriates of sewage or waste sludge. The toxic ranking of four metals was: Cu (EC50 of 0.040mgL(-1))>Cd (0.095mgL(-1))>Pb (0.489mgL(-1))>Zn (0.572mgL(-1)). The EC50 for TBTO ranged from 24 to 63microgL(-1). The most toxic VOC was formalin (EC50 of 0.788microlL(-1)) and the least toxic was acetone. Spore release was significantly inhibited in all elutriates; the greatest and least toxic effects were for industrial sewage (3.29%) and filtration bed (10.08%), respectively. The bioassay is simple, inexpensive and sensitive. The cosmopolitan distribution of Ulva means that the test would have a potential application worldwide.  相似文献

The toxicity of seawater dispersions of a chemical dispersant to two marine crustaceans was investigated in the presence and absence of various quantities of a non-toxic mineral oil. From the results and a physical-chemical partitioning analysis, a limiting value of the oil-water partition coefficient of the toxic compounds is deduced suggesting that essentially all of the toxic compounds in the dispersant will partition into solution in water following dispersant application to an oil spill. This conclusion simplifies interpretation and prediction of the toxic effects of a dispersed oil spill.The combined bioassay-partitioning procedure may have applications to the study of the toxicity of other complex mixtures such as industrial effluents.  相似文献

Leachates of anti-fouling paints for use on ships and leisure boats are examined for their ecotoxicological potential. Paint leachates were produced in both 7‰ artificial (ASW) and natural seawater (NSW) and tested on three organisms, the bacterium Vibrio fischeri, the macroalga Ceramium tenuicorne, and the crustacean Nitocra spinipes. Generally, leaching in ASW produced a more toxic leachate and was up to 12 times more toxic to the organisms than was the corresponding NSW leachate. The toxicity could be explained by elevated concentrations of Cu and Zn in the ASW leachates. Of the NSW leachates, those from the ship paints were more toxic than those from leisure boat paints. The most toxic paint was the biocide-free leisure boat paint Micron Eco. This implies that substances other than added active agents (biocides) were responsible for the observed toxicity, which would not have been discovered without the use of biological tests.  相似文献

The in vitro induction of the cytochrome P1-450-dependent monooxygenases, aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) or ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) by 2,3,7,8-TCDD and related toxic halogenated aryl hydrocarbons in rat hepatoma H-4-II E cells has been developed as a short term quantitative bioassay for these toxic chemicals. There was a linear correlation between the -log EC50 (in vitro) AHH induction vs the -log ED50 (in vivo) for body weight loss, thymic atrophy, hepatic AHH and EROD induction in the rat for several polychlorinated biphenyl, dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran congeners and mixtures. These data clearly support the utility of the in vitro AHH induction assay as a short term test system for quantitating the “toxic or 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents” in an extract containing toxic halogenated aromatics. The bioassay method is rapid, relatively accurate and much more cost effective than conventional analytical methods such as gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry from which it is difficult to determine the levels of 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents in specific analytes.  相似文献

Faced with the task of treating significant volumes of complex industrial wastewaters, the biological components of municipal wastewater treatment plants are operating under the risk of toxic or inhibitory contaminants from the industrial effluents that may be detrimental to their operation. This might lead to undesirable effluent toxicity and/or result in permit violations. Therefore, there is a need for upset early warning systems that can protect full-scale plants from toxic or inhibitory constituents in the incoming wastewaters. This study focused on the development of a protocol for rapid detection of potentially toxic inhibitory or toxic wastewaters using combined aerobic respirometric and anaerobic batch techniques. Aerobic respirometers equipped with automated data acquisition systems were used as potential early warning devices. The inhibition effect on carbon and nitrogen oxidation was assessed. The degree of inhibition was evaluated as the concentration causing 50% reduction in microbial activity, which was estimated by an inhibition model. Anaerobic toxicity assays were also conducted to evaluate the inhibitory effects of the toxic compounds to anaerobic inocula obtained from a master culture reactor fed with ethanol. The developed protocol for early detection of toxicity was validated using wastewater samples from a biotechnology industry and a food processing industry, and pure chemicals such as furfural and phenol. Varying degrees of sensitivity were observed in the study when different groups of microorganisms, wastewater samples, and chemicals were tested. The comparison of aerobic and anaerobic inhibition suggested the importance of using both aerobic and anaerobic cultures to maximize the necessary sensitivity of the protocol.  相似文献

Phytotoxicity of enrofloxacin on crop plants Cucumis sativus, Lactuca sativa, Phaseolus vulgaris and Raphanus sativus was determined in a laboratory model: the effect of 50, 100 and 5000 microgl(-1) were evaluated after 30 days exposure by measuring post-germinative growth of primary root, hypocotyl, cotyledons and leaves. Concentrations between 50 and 5000 microgl(-1) induced both toxic effect and hormesis in plants, by significantly modifying both length of primary root, hypocotyl, cotyledons and the number/length of leaves. A toxic effect is induced by high concentration (5000 microgl(-1)), while hormesis occurs at low concentrations (50 and 100 microgl(-1)). A continuum between toxic effect and hormesis is found in the four plant species. Both toxic effect and hormesis can be related to an efficient plant drug uptake, in the order of microgg(-1). Plants are able to metabolize enrofloxacin into ciprofloxacin, as also happens in animals; Cucumis, Lactuca and Phaseolus biologically convert about one quarter of stored enrofloxacin. The ecological implication of enrofloxacin contamination in terrestrial environments is discussed.  相似文献

The level of toxic metals Cr, Cd, Pb and Cu was determined in seeds, water and sediments collected from nine closed waterbodies of Darbhanga, north Bihar, used for cultivation of the edible aquatic macrophyte Euryaleferox Salisb. during harvesting season of the crop for two successive years (1996 and 1997). Seeds bioconcentrated appreciable amount of these toxic metals in the order Pb > Cr > Cu > Cd. The increased load of metal pollution due to domestic and municipal discharges threatened the habitats of the plant. The toxic metal contents in seeds were found positively correlated with the ambient concentration of metals in water and sediments. The importance of these findings has been discussed for national water resource economy of the country and human health perspectives.  相似文献

Surfactants used in household and various industries, are rather toxic; therefore, the accumulation of these compounds in the environment through wastewaters has challenged the problem of their biodegradation. In this research, an attempt was made to assess the toxic effect of various surfactants and the likely products of their biodegradation on the acetoclastic methanogens of an anaerobic microbial community. Among the substances investigated, cationic surfactants were found to be most toxic to methanogens: 154 mg/l alkamon DS and 345 mg/l catamin AB induced a 50% inhibition of methanogenesis. Toxicity studies of some aromatic and cyclic compounds, as the probable products of biodegradation of alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactants, showed that methanogenesis in the microbial community under study are rather tolerant to high concentrations of these compounds.  相似文献

This paper reviews the ecological aspects of mined soil restoration, with special emphasis on maintaining a long-term sustainable vegetation on toxic metal mine sites. The metal mined soils are man-made habitats which are very unstable and will become sources of air and water pollution. Establishment of a vegetation cover is essential to stabilize the bare area and to minimize the pollution problem. In addition to remediate the adverse physical and chemical properties of the sites, the choice of appropriate vegetation will be important. Phytostabilization and phytoextraction are two common phytoremediation techniques in treating metal-contaminated soils, for stabilizing toxic mine spoils, and the removal of toxic metals from the spoils respectively. Soil amendments should be added to aid stabilizing mine spoils, and to enhance metal uptake accordingly.  相似文献

Isomer-specific determinations of PCB congeners in a wide variety of animal species such as fish, marine mammals (whale, dolphin and porpoise) and terrestrial mammals (dog, cat and human) revealed the environmental occurrence of highly toxic coplanar 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (T(4)CB), 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (P(5)CB) and 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (H(6)CB) within a range of few pg g(-1) to several ten ng g(-1) in fat tissues (except fish) on a wet weight basis. Detection of these toxic residues in wild specimens collected from remote areas such as the North Pacific suggests the already widespread distribution of coplanar PCBs as in the case of general PCB pollution. The clear positive correlations between concentrations of total PCBs and each of the three coplanar PCBs obtained in all mammals analysed suggest that the sources of coplanar PCB contamination to the environment are mainly commercial PCB preparations. Comparison of the composition of three toxic coplanar PCBs in commercial PCB mixtures and in the various animals indicates the relative metabolisability of these congeners as follows: 3,3',4,4'-T4CB>3,3',4,4',5-P5CB>3,3',4,4',5,5'-H6CB. Moreover, marine mammals seem to have lower potency to metabolise the coplanar PCBs in comparison with terrestrial mammals. In human adipose tissues, the concentrations of coplanar PCBs were found to be much higher than 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (T(4)CDD), 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran (P(5)CDF) and other toxic congeners. 'T(4)CDD-equivalent' analysis based on the enzyme induction potencies and the residues of these toxic chemicals indicates that 3,3',4,4',5-P(5)CB may impose a greater toxic threat than dioxins and furans to the humans and probably to wildlife also.  相似文献

Exposure to secondary metabolites of airborne fungi in waste handling facilities is discussed in regard to potential toxic impacts on human health. The relevance of mycotoxins has been intensely studied in connection with contamination of food and feed. Toxic secondary metabolites are expected to be present in airborne spores, but exposure to mycotoxins in bioaerosols has not been studied sufficiently. Aspergillus fumigatus is one of the most frequent species in the air of compost plants. A wide range of secondary metabolites was found in pure cultures of freshly isolated strains of A. fumigatus. Tryptoquivaline, a compound with tremorgenic properties, and trypacidin, for which no toxic properties are described, were found in native bioaerosols in a compost facility. The highly toxic metabolites gliotoxin and verruculogen were not found in the bioaerosols.  相似文献

The toxic effects of lindane on the zooplankton communities may be strongly related to the population fitness, which is highly dependent on food availability. In order to test this hypothesis, acute (immobilisation) and chronic (life-history) responses of Daphnia longispina and Daphnia magna, reared at different food levels (low, normal, and high), were assessed in laboratorial exposures to several concentrations of lindane. A bifactorial design was employed (food level versus lindane concentration) for both species. Results showed that lindane was toxic to both D. magna and D. longispina, within a similar range. However, lindane toxicity to daphnids was dependent on food level, suggesting that the latter is an important factor to take into account when assessing the toxic effects of lindane on zooplankton communities.  相似文献
