Knowledge of the structure of networks of social interactions is important for understanding the evolution of cooperation, transmission of disease, and patterns of social learning, yet little is known of how environmental, ecological, or behavioural factors relate to such structures within groups. We observed grooming, dominance, and foraging competition interactions in eight groups of wild meerkats (Suricata suricatta) and constructed interaction networks for each behaviour. We investigated relationships between networks for different social interactions and explored how group attributes (size and sex ratio), individual attributes (tenure of dominants), and ecological factors (ectoparasite load) are related to variation in network structure. Network structures varied within a group according to interaction type. Further, network structure varied predictably with group attributes, individual attributes, and ecological factors. Networks became less dense as group size increased suggesting that individuals were limited in their number of partners. Groups with more established dominant females were more egalitarian in their grooming and foraging competition interactions, but more despotic in their dominance interactions. The distribution of individuals receiving grooming became more skewed at higher parasite loads, but more equitable at low parasite loads. We conclude that the pattern of interactions between members of meerkat groups is not consistent between groups but instead depends on general attributes of the group, the influence of specific individuals within the group, and ecological factors acting on group members. We suggest that the variation observed in interaction patterns between members of meerkat groups may have fitness consequences both for individual group members and the group itself. 相似文献

Social structure and co-operative interactions in a wild population of guppies (Poecilia reticulata)

In contrast to the substantial number of theoretical papers that have examined the mechanisms by which cooperation may evolve,
very few studies have investigated patterns of co-operation in natural animal populations. In the current study, we use a
novel approach, social network analysis, to investigate the structure of co-operative interactions in the context of predator
inspection in a wild population of guppies (Poecilia reticulata). Female guppies showed social preferences for stable partners, fulfilling a key assumption made by models of reciprocity.
In the laboratory, wild female guppies disproportionately engaged in predator inspection with others with whom they had strong
social associations. Furthermore, pairs of fish that frequently engaged in predator inspection did so in a particularly co-operative
way, potentially reducing costs associated with predator inspection. Taken together, these results provide evidence for assortative
interactions forming the basis of co-operation during predator inspection in a natural fish population. The occurrence of
highly interconnected social networks between stable partners suggests the existence of co-operation networks in free-ranging

Infectious processes in a social group are driven by a network of contacts that is generally structured by the organization
arising from behavioral and spatial heterogeneities within the group. Although theoretical models of transmission dynamics
have placed an overwhelming emphasis on the importance of understanding the network structure in a social group, empirical
data regarding such contact structures are rare. In this paper, I analyze the network structure and the correlated transmission
dynamics within a honeybee colony as determined by food transfer interactions and the changes produced in it by an experimental
manipulation. The study demonstrates that widespread transmission in the colony is correlated to a lower clustering coefficient
and higher robustness of the social network. I also show that the social network in the colony is determined by the spatial
distribution of various age classes, and the resulting organizational structure provides some amount of immunity to the young
individuals. The results of this study demonstrates how, using the honeybee colony as a model system, concepts in network
theory can be combined with those in behavioral ecology to gain a better understanding of social transmission processes, especially
those related to disease dynamics. 相似文献

Social interactions are critical to the organization of worker activities in insect colonies and their consequent ecological
success. The structure of this interaction network is therefore crucial to our understanding of colony organization and functioning.
In this paper, I study the properties of the interaction network in the colonies of the social wasp Ropalidia marginata. I find that the network is characterized by a uniform connectivity among individuals with increasing heterogeneity as colonies
become larger. Important network parameters are found to be correlated with colony size and I investigate how this is reflected
in the organization of work in colonies of different sizes. Finally, I test the resilience of these interaction networks by
experimental removal of individuals from the colony and discuss the structural properties of the network that are related
to resilience in a social network.

Ecological factors differently affect male and female animals and thereby importantly influence their life history and reproductive
strategies. Caviomorph rodents are found in a wide range of habitats in South America and different social and mating systems
have evolved in closely related species. This permits to study the impact of ecological factors on social evolution. In this
study, we investigated the social organization and the mating system of the wild cavy (Cavia aperea), the ancestor of the domestic guinea pig, in its natural habitat in Uruguay. Based on our laboratory investigations, we
expected a polygynous system with large males controlling access to females. Results from radiotelemetry and direct observations
showed that females occupied small stable home ranges which were largely overlapped by that of one large male, resulting in
a social organization of small harems. In some cases, small satellite males were associated with harems and intermediate-sized
roaming males were occasionally observed on the study site. However, microsatellite analyses revealed that offspring were
exclusively sired by large males of the same or neighboring harems, with a moderate degree of multiple paternity (13–27%).
Thus, the mating system of C. aperea can be described as polygynous and contrasts with the promiscuous organization described for other species of cavies (Cavia magna, Galea musteloides and Microcavia australis) living under different ecological conditions. Our findings stress the strong impact of environmental factors on social evolution
in Caviomorphs as resource distribution determines female space use and, thereby, the ability of males to monopolize females.

Social parasites exploit the worker force of colonies of other social insects to rear their own young. Social parasitism occurs in several Hymenoptera and is particularly common in several tribes of the ant subfamilies Myrmicinae and Formicinae. Here, we document the occurrence of miniaturized queens (microgynes) in colonies of Ectatomma tuberculatum, an ant belonging to the subfamily Ectatomminae. Behavioral observations and genetic analyses show that microgynes concentrate their reproductive efforts almost exclusively on the production of sexual offspring (microgynes and males), whereas the regular, large queens (macrogynes) produce workers in addition to sexuals. According to mitochondrial and nuclear markers, gene flow between microgynes and macrogynes is extremely limited. Whereas the co-occurrence of microgynes and macrogynes in the related species Ectatomma ruidum constitutes an intraspecific polymorphism associated with alternative dispersal tactics, microgynes found in colonies of E. tuberculatum appear to be a distinct species and to represent the first case of social parasitism in the poneromorph subfamilies of ants. 相似文献

The African wild dog is a highly social, pack-living predator of the African woodland and savannah. The archetypal wild dog
pack consists of a single dominant breeding pair, their offspring, and non-breeding adults who are either offspring or siblings
of one of the breeding pair. Non-breeding adults cooperate in hunting, provisioning and the protection of young. From these
observations follows the prediction that the genetic structure of wild dogs packs should resemble that of a multigenerational
family, with all same-sexed adults and offspring within a pack related as sibs or half-sibs. Additionally, a higher kinship
between females from neighboring packs should be evident if females tend to have small dispersal distances relative to males.
We test these predictions through analysis of mitochondrial DNA control region sequences and 14 microsatellite loci in nine
wild dog packs from Kruger National Park, Republic of South Africa. We show that as predicted, African wild dog packs generally
consist of an unrelated alpha male and female, subdominant close relatives, and offspring of the breeding pair. Sub-dominant
wild dogs occasionally reproduce but their offspring rarely survive to 1 year of age. Relatedness influences the timing and
location of dispersal events as dispersal events frequently coincide with a change in pack dominance hierarchy and dispersers
often move to areas with a high proportion of close relatives.

Developing an empirical model of phytoplankton primary production: a neural network case study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe the development of a neural network model for estimating primary production of phytoplankton. Data from an enriched estuary in the eastern United States, Chesapeake Bay, were used to train, validate and test the model. Two error backpropagation multilayer perceptrons were trained: a simpler one (3-5-1) and a more complex one (12-5-1). Both neural networks outperformed conventional empirical models, even though only the latter, which exploits a larger suite of predictive variables, provided truly accurate outputs. The application of this neural network model is thoroughly discussed and the results of a sensitivity analysis are also presented. 相似文献

Maternal-offspring interactions are important in a variety of animals. Understanding the evolution of these interactions requires that we also study the broader social context in which they occur. To date, behavioral studies on burrower bugs, Sehirus cinctus, have focused exclusively on interactions between mothers and offspring. Here we ask whether these interactions occur in a social context that extends beyond the family unit of a mother and her own genetic offspring. Such social structure can arise from behaviors that occur before eggs are laid, or from actions of individuals that occur post-hatching. We present field data showing that lay sites of mothers are spatially aggregated on a scale that would lead to behavioral interactions among families. Microsatellite markers suggest neighboring mothers are unrelated. Laboratory experiments do not support the hypothesis that spatial aggregation results from a direct attraction of females to one another. Other laboratory studies reported here indicate that, after hatching, unrelated clutches sometimes join together to form multifamily groups. Experiments reveal that mothers are not necessary for these joining events to occur. In sum, these data suggest that both mothers and offspring play active, but different, roles in generating the social environment in which offspring rearing occurs.Communicated by N. Wedell 相似文献

Reintroduction programs for conservation purposes suffer from low post-release survival of captive-bred animals, especially so with fish reintroductions. High mortality is most often due to weakened antipredator skills, which could be enhanced through direct experience with predators and social learning. As yet, the relative efficiency of these learning methods has not been tested, and the significance of the factors determining how efficiently antipredator responses are transmitted socially from experienced (demonstrator) to predator naive (observer) individuals is largely unknown. Using hatchery-bred stock of the endangered Saimaa Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), we show for the first time that: (1) contrary to theoretical predictions, acquired predator recognition was only socially transmitted from predator-experienced to predator-naive fish in groups with a smaller proportion of experienced than naive individuals, and that (2) socially acquired avoidance of the predator odors was as strong as in those fish conditioned with a combination of odors and predator exposure. We conclude that using social transmission procedures in training fish for reintroduction programs may provide considerable ecological, economical and ethical advantages.Communicated by J. As applied to polygynous mammals, the socioecological model assumes that environmental risks and resources determine the
spatial and temporal distribution of females, which then sets male strategies for monopolizing fertile matings. The effects
of female spatial distribution (i.e., female number) and temporal overlap (female mating synchrony) have been examined in
comparative studies of primates, but the relative influence of these two factors on male monopolization potential (the number
of males) remains unclear. One particular problem is that female synchrony is more difficult to estimate than female number.
This paper uses multivariate statistical methods and three independent estimates of female synchrony to assess the roles of
spatial and temporal effects in the context of a phylogenetically corrected dataset. These analyses are based on sensitivity
analyses involving a total of four phylogenies, with two sets of branch length estimates for each tree, and one nonphylogenetic
analysis in which species values are used (because male behavior may represent a facultative response to the distribution
of females). The results show: (1) that breeding seasonality predicts male number (statistically significant in six out of
nine sensitivity tests); (2) that expected female overlap, after controlling for female group size using residuals, also accounts
for the number of males in primate groups (significant in eight out of nine tests), and (3) that actual estimates of female
mating synchrony predict male number, again after correcting for female group size (significant in five out of nine tests).
Nonsignificant results are in the predicted direction, and female group size is significant in all statistical tests. These
analyses therefore demonstrate an independent influence of female temporal overlap on male monopolization strategies in mammalian
social systems.

Air pollution poses a serious threat to human health in Asia. This study analyzes the association of air pollutants and greenness with incidence rates of allergic rhinitis in Seoul at the administrative district level to gain insight into district-level urban policies to improve public health. A spatial regression model is constructed to investigate the correlation between allergic rhinitis incidence rates and five air pollutants measured at 128 air pollution monitoring stations around Seoul: sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter less than 10 μm (PM10), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO). The allergic rhinitis incidence data are derived from the National Health Insurance Service’s database that includes the number of allergic rhinitis-related clinic visits by the patients over 20 years of age and living in Seoul. A kriging geostatistical interpolation was used to estimate average air pollution level of 423 administrative districts. To assess pollen concentrations that can affect allergic rhinitis, the average normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is measured based on the urban greenness. The model, controlling for built environment and socio-economic attributes, identifies the possibility of a weak association between allergic rhinitis incidence rates and carbon monoxide levels. The NDVI value is negatively correlated with allergic rhinitis incidence rates, implying a complicated aspect in relation to the effect of urban greenness. 相似文献

Several factors thought to be important for the evolution of cooperative breeding in vertebrates have received little attention
in facultatively social insects. One of these, the “habitat saturation hypothesis” of Selander (1964), predicts that colony
sizes will be greater in breeding units where dispersal opportunities are limited, suggesting that group living is a secondary
option to independent reproduction. The Australian allodapine bee Exoneura bicolor exhibits a number of traits that occur in cooperatively breeding bird species, including long life-span, repeated opportunities
for reproduction, and vulnerability to brood predation and parasitism. We experimentally examined the effect of a potentially
limiting environmental factor, nesting substrate availability, as an agent influencing sociality in E. bicolor. We manipulated nesting substrate availability in two separate locations during a time when foundress dispersal is common.
No significant difference was found between colony sizes in cases where dispersal options were abundant and cases where dispersal
options were limited. An increase in opportunities for dispersal did not lead to higher rates of independent nesting, suggesting
that cooperative nesting is a preferred strategy regardless of distance-related costs of dispersal. Reproductivity per female
and brood survival were examined as factors selecting for group living. Low survival of brood in single-female nests has the
potential to select for cooperative nesting in this bee.

区域农田生态系统生产力的时空格局及其影响因子研究——以山东省为例 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
在统计数据的基础上,以山东省为例,利用模型量化了农田生态系统净初级生产力(NPP),并研究了农田生态系统NPP的时空格局及其影响因素。研究发现,2000—2006年间,山东省农田生态系统NPP在时间序列上整体呈上升的趋势,由2000年的476.5g·m-2·a-1(以C计)上升到2006年的544.2g·m-2·a-1(以C计)。空间格局中以鲁东、鲁中和鲁南较高,鲁西南和鲁北较低。各地市中以枣庄最高,为691g·m-2·a-1(以C计);东营最低,约424.4g·m-2·a-1(以C计)。另外,莱芜、临沂及菏泽等地也相对偏低。通过对影响农田生态系统NPP的自然因子和人为因子分别进行主成分分析发现:气候因子中对山东省农田生态系统NPP贡献最大的为降水;人为因子中以农膜的贡献最大,其次为农药、机械、化肥,而劳动力的贡献则随着科技的发展而降低,人口密度的过大对农田生态系统生产力具有较大的负面影响。 相似文献
