The lipid and fatty acid composition of male and female Penaeus japonicus Bate was investigated over a period of 11 months to determine the effects of environmental and nutritional factors such as temperature and starvation. The lipid content of the prawns increases from May to November, whereas water content decreases. We observed a time-lag between the highest lipid rate of males (in November) and that of females (in October); this is probably related to ovarian metabolism. From September to March, the high lipid content of the females coincided with a high percentage of monounsaturated fatty acids (especially 16:1 and 18:1). Winter starvation induces a decrease in palmitic acid content. As temperature decreases, the monounsaturated (16:1, 18:1) and polyunsaturated (20:4, 20:5, 22:6) fatty acids increase at the expense of the saturated fatty acids (16:0, 18:0) in the adult prawn. However, in post-larvae and juveniles, this increased rate of polyunsaturated fatty acids would be related to their particular lipid metabolism.  相似文献

Shrimp, Penaeus semisulcatus, were collected from Kuwaiti waters in 1980, and the R-cells in the hepatopancreas were observed during the digestive cycle. During the first 12 h they absorb soluble material from the lumen of the gland and, subsequently, they take-up soluble and particulate material from the haemolymph. Within the cytoplasm, apical and basal systems of smooth endoplasmic reticulum are concerned with these processes. Pinocytosis only occurs at the basal cell membrane. The absorbed material is stored as lipid and glycogen, and copper, sulphur and other elements are accumulated in a large dense vacuole. These activities are integrated with those of the other cell types to effect the assimilation of food in the hepatopancreas. A scheme is proposed which accounts for the main processes of digestion. The hepatopancreas governs the duration of the digestive cycle, which takes at least 24 h. Observations on the nature of intracellular storage and waste products could be used to assess the dietary requirements of artificially reared shrimp.  相似文献

The object of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of cadmium in different post-embryonic stages of the penaeid shrimp Penaeus japonicus (Bate, 1888) and to determine the effect of sublethal cadmium on the osmoregulatory capacity used as an indicator of physiological condition. Tolerance to cadmium increases with the developmental stage. The least tolerant stages are the nauplii (48 h LC50: 124 g Cd l-1) and the zoeae (96 h LC50: 10 to 30 g Cd l-1). The most tolerant stages are the postlarvae (96 h LC50: 200 to 3500 Cd l-1) and juveniles (96 h LC50: 5500 g Cd l-1). In juvenile shrimp, 2000 g Cd l-1 significantly reduce hypo- and hyper-OC. The effect of cadmium on hypo- and hyper-osmoregulatory capacity illustrates a dose- and time-dependent response. Surviving shrimp recover their hypo-osmoregulatory capacity after 6 d of readaptation in cadmium-free seawater.  相似文献

Diel activity rhythms of the prawn Palaemon xiphias Risso, 1818 from Alfacs Bay, Ebro Delta, were studied by time-lapse videorecordings. Activity displayed an endogenous circadian rhythm, with maximum activity at night. Feeding habits were studied by frequency of occurrence and by the points method. The food of P. xiphias consisted mainly of crustaceans; the remains of amphipods, isopods, mysids, copepods, decapods and ostracods were identified. The remaining items consisted of molluscs, polychaetes, ophiuroids, plant material, sand, and unidentified organic debris. The results indicate that P. xiphias is a predator of benthic invertebrates rather than a scavenger or detritus feeder. Diet composition changes with increasing size of the prawn.  相似文献

Levels of calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, and manganese were examined in the muscle, hepatopancreas, and gonad of white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, females at different stages of ovary maturation. Eyestalk-ablated shrimp were sampled during the intermolt stage and classified using the following maturation stages evaluated histologically: cortical stage, vitellogenesis, previtellogenesis, and without gonadic development. In muscle, the copper concentration was significantly lower in the vitellogenic stage than in other stages of ovary development. In the hepatopancreas, manganese levels were higher in the cortical and vitellogenic stages than in animals in previtellogenesis and without gonadic development. No other influence of ovary maturation on muscle and hepatopancreas mineral content was found. In contrast, in the ovary, significant differences of some mineral concentrations were detected. Zinc, iron, and magnesium concentrations were significantly increased in the cortical stage compared to the vitellogenic and previtellogenic stages. Our results indicate that these elements are selectively accumulated during ovary development, especially when the ovaries reach the cortical stage. The toxicity of fenitrothion was determined in larvae (nauplii, Zoeae 1 to 3, Mysis 1 to 3), postlarvae (PL stages) and juvenile shrimp (Penaeus japonicus Bate), in two media, seawater (SW) and diluted seawater (DSW) (1100 and 550 mosM kg−1, ≃ 37 and 19‰ S). The effects of fenitrothion on the osmoregulatory capacities (OC) of juveniles were recorded. A gill and epipodite histopathological study was also conducted. For larvae in seawater, 24 and 48 h LC50s ranged from 32.9 μg l−1 (Zoeae 2) to 10.7 μg l−1 (Mysis 3), and from 3.9 μg l−1 (Zoeae 3) to 2.0 μg l−1 (Mysis 3), respectively; 48 and 96 h  LC50s in postlarvae (PL) at the same salinity ranged from 1.8 μg l−1 (PL1) to 0.6 μg l−1 (PL5), and from 0.3 μg l−1 (PL7) to 0.4 μg l−1 (PL15). In juveniles, 96 h LC50s were 0.8 μg l−1 in seawater and 1.5 μg l−1 in diluted seawater. From hatching to juvenile stages, the overall trend was a rapid decrease (from nauplii to PL5–PL7) followed by a slight increase (from PL7 to PL15 and juveniles) in the shrimp's ability to tolerate the insecticide. In juveniles kept in seawater and in diluted seawater, fenitrothion decreased the osmoregulatory capacity (OC = difference between the hemolymph osmotic pressure and the osmotic pressure of the medium) at both lethal and sublethal concentrations. This effect was time- and dose-dependent. In SW, the decrease in hypo-OC was ˜ 25% at sublethal concentrations and ˜ 35% at the 96 h LC50. In DSW, the decrease in hyper-OC was ˜ 10 to 15% at sublethal concentrations. In SW, shrimp were able to recover their OC in less than 48 h when transferred to water free of pesticide. In DSW, recovery at 48 h was only possible after exposure to the lowest tested sublethal concentration. Haemocytic congestions (thrombosis) of the gills, lamellae necrosis and other alterations of gills and epipodites (breakage of the cuticle, reduction of the hemolymph lacunae) were noted in juveniles exposed to lethal and sublethal concentrations of fenitrothion. In the shrimp Penaeus semisulcatus, the digestive gland functions as the main site for the digestion, absorption and storage of nutrients and metals during the feeding stages of intermoult and for the mobilization of reserves during the non-feeding stages of pre-and post-moult. These different activities are reflected directly in the cytology of the gland. All the epithelial cells show marked fluctuations in frequency and changes in structure, form and function which occur in phase with the moult cycle. The shrimp were collected offshore from Kuwait in 1980.  相似文献

The larval stages of Callianassa kraussi Stebb. were previously unknown. Larvae were bred out in the laboratory and found to be incapable of swimming. There are two larval stages, lasting 3 to 5 days in sea water of 34 to 35 S at 20 °C. Observations under simulated field conditions in the laboratory, and in the field—where burrow casts were made using a polyester resin, indicated that the larvae metamorphose to the first post-larval stage in the parent burrow, and then burrow directly into the wall of the parent burrow.  相似文献

Dry weight (DW), oxygen consumption, ammonia-N excretion, proximate biochemical composition (total protein, carbohydrate, lipid, water and ash), and energy content (estimated from biochemical composition and by wet combustion) were determined in early developmental stages of cultured Farfantepenaeus paulensis. Pooled samples from embryonic, larval and postlarval stages (at 26 ± 1 °C and 34 ± 1‰) were used for measurements. The study focused on physiological and biochemical processes during transitional periods of ontogeny, such as hatching, lecithotrophic and planktotrophic stages, metamorphosis, and the attainment of a benthic existence in postlarva. DW showed higher increment between protozoea I (PZ I) and mysis I (M I) than in the next mysid and postlarval stages. Individual rates of oxygen consumption and ammonia-N excretion increased, while weight-specific rates presented significant reduction throughout development. Higher weight-specific oxygen consumption was registered in nauplius III (N III) and PZ I, following a decrease in subsequent stages. Postlarval stages PL V–VI and PL X–XII exhibited the lowest values among the stages studied. Weight-specific excretion was high in N III and protozoeal stages, with maximum values in PZ II, while the following stages were marked by lower rates. O:N ratios indicated higher protein catabolism in the stages between egg and M I and a shift to more lipid utilization close to metamorphosis. Water content was higher in the protozoeal stages and decreased afterwards. Higher percentages of protein, lipid and carbohydrate (%DW) were observed in egg and nauplius stages. Protein and lipid decreased from the egg through the naupliar and protozoeal stages, rising again in mysis stages. Lipid content (%DW) decreased in PL V–VI and PL X–XII. Lipid:protein ratios showed an increase of the importance of lipid between PZ III and M II. Carbohydrates represented a minor fraction of body composition, and ash percentages increased from egg to a maximum in PZ II, decreasing in subsequent stages. Energy content determined by wet combustion or calculated by energy equivalents presented the same trend throughout development, varying similarly to protein. Protein was the main energy contributor to body energy in all stages, while the importance of lipid was higher in egg and early naupliar stages. Trends observed in metabolic rates and body composition may be associated to morphological and behavioral changes during the early stages of penaeid development, such as the transition from herbivory to omnivory, and the adoption of a benthic existence. Different ontogenetic energy strategies contribute to succeed through such diverse type of development. Received: 4 July 2000 / Accepted: 6 December 2000  相似文献

Proteinase (endopeptidase), trypsin-like and chymotrypsin-like activities were examined throughout the ontogenetic development of cultured Farfantepenaeus paulensis. Whole individuals from different larval and postlarval stages, and the hepatopancreas of adults were homogenized and assayed to quantify the enzyme activities of specific substrates. Proteinase activity was identified by substrate-SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Specific inhibitors for trypsin (TLCK), chymotrypsin (TPCK) and serine proteinases (PMSF) were used to identify activity zones of these enzymes in gels. Protein-specific activity of total proteinases, trypsin and chymotrypsin was negligible at the egg stage and at Nauplius III, increasing in the first protozoeal substage (PZ I), and reaching a peak at PZ III; it decreased again in the subsequent postlarval substages. Different patterns of proteinase activity were observed in SDS-PAGE zymograms during ontogenetic development. Active bands of 14.6, 16.4, 17.5, 19.5, 22.5, 23.9, 25.8, 28.9, 32.0, 34.4, 37.7, and 42.2 kdaltons were detected in the adult hepatopancreas. Proteolytic activity was detected on gels in PZ I, and intense activity zones of 16.4, 17.5 and 19.5 kdaltons were found up to Mysis I (M I). Intense bands of 39.1 and 53.5 kdaltons were observed only at PZ III and M I. Band-activity intensity decreased after metamorphosis to the postlarval stage (PL). The chymotrypsin inhibitor TPCK had no effect on the proteinase bands. Active zones in gel inhibited with both TLCK and PMSF were considered to represent trypsin. The inhibitory effect of PMSF alone on proteinase extracts indicated chymotrypsin activity. TLCK and PMSF inhibition also varied during ontogenetic development. The inhibition of bands recorded between 14.6 and 21.7 kdaltons suggested the presence of low molecular weight trypsin in F. paulensis. The 39.1 kdaltons band observed at PZ III and M I were trypsin-like. On the other hand, bands of 28.9, 32 and 37.7 kdaltons from the adult hepatopancreas seem to represent a chymotrypsin. We conclude that the recorded variation in enzyme activity may be associated with morphological and behavioral changes during penaeid ontogenetic development. The higher enzyme activity at PZ II, PZ III and M I may reflect the increased energy turnover associated with intense swimming behavior and food ingestion. Due to the sparse and unstable nature of insular freshwater habitats, marine larval dispersal of amphidromous species is considered a critical element of population persistence. We assessed population genetic structure of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium lar across its range that encompasses two biogeographic barriers: the vast open ocean separating Western and Central Pacific regions and the Indo-Malay archipelago separating Indian and Pacific oceans. A total of 173 samples collected from 21 islands throughout the Indo-Pacific were sequenced at 16S and 28S rDNA. We observed distinct genetic isolation of populations located at the eastern and southwestern edge of the species range but no evidence of an effect of the Indo-Pacific barrier. Differentiation patterns are consistent with a stepping-stone model of dispersal. Genetic differences of Central Pacific populations may reflect founder events associated with colonization of isolated islands, or be a signature of a past bottleneck after population depletion caused by drastic climatic events.  相似文献

The incidence of ovigerous females in populations of two grapsid crabs, Hemigrapsus penicillatus (de Haan, 1835) and Sesarma (Parasesarma) pictum (de Haan, 1835) were followed from August 1975 to November 1976. H. penicillatus, which inhabits the lower intertidal region near the mouth of Tatara-Umi Estuary, breeds from March to November. S. pictum, which inhibits crevices and abandoned holes of other species and is abundant at and above the upper intertidal region of the estuary, breeds from May to September. H. penicillatus matures when the female reaches 6 to 7 mm carapace width, whereas S. pictum becomes mature when the carapace width is 12 to 13 mm, although the maximum size attained by females of both species is almost the same. H. penicillatus produces 5 to 6 broods, S. pictum 2 to 3 broods, during a breeding season. The size of a newly laid egg of H. penicillatus is smaller than that of S. pictum. The number of eggs produced by a female H. penicillatus is greater than that of S. pictum during a breeding season. In both species the peak of the breeding season is during summer, at which time the ovarian activity is also apparently accelerated. The major environmental factor which controls the breeding in these crabs appears to be temperature. H. penicillatus is submerged at every high tide, and is relatively inactive from late November to February when the ambient water and air temperatures are rather low. S. pictum is dormant in crevices or understones of the splash zone from November to March. The length of the breeding season of these crabs appears to be inversely proportional to the period of their winter dormancy.  相似文献

Nine metals were analysed in whole specimens of the decapod crustancean Cancer irroratus, and three in the exoskeleton of Carcinus maenas. In terms of concentrations (expressed as parts per millions) and concentration factors, 2 groups of metals could be distinguished in Cancer irroratus: Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn in one group, Ca, Mg, Sr, Na and K in the other group. Na excepted, all the metals had concentration factors significantly higher (P<0.01) than 1. The concentration factor of Na was significantly lower (P<0.01) than 1, demonstrating the existence in C. irroratus of a barrier to the movement of Na into the crustacean from its environment. Studies of coefficients of discrimination (D), in C. irroratus, for metals considered in pairs, showed, in each case that D was significantly different (Plt;0.01) from 1. Only the discrimination factor between, Zn and Mn was less significantly different (0.05lt;Plt;0.1) from 1. Correlations were made between the concentrations of metals and other parameters: water content, size, and ash content. Significant correlations were found, especially in the cases of the pairs Ca?Sr, Na?K, Cu?Zn, and Mn-animal size.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of the larval stages of Euphausia nana Brinton and E. similis G. O. Sars in Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay, Central Japan were studied. Most of the metanauplius larvae of E. nana occurred between 25 and 80 m depth, and they were found at greater depths than the eggs and calyptopis larvae. The nauplii and metanauplii of e. similis were mainly found between 50 and 100 m depth, and they also occurred deeper than the eggs and calyptopes. The larvae of the two species from calyptopis I demonstrate diurnal vertical migration. However, this phenomenon was not clear in the season (March) when a seasonal thermocline was absent. Calyptopes and fruciliae of E. similis occurred deeper and migrated over greater vertical distances than those of E. nana. The distance of migration of furcilia I larvae of E. similis was estimated to be about 200 m.  相似文献

Investigations have been carried out on the carotenoids in Leander (Palaemon) serratus (Pennant) and Nephrops norvegicus (L.) (Crustacea: Decapoda) from the Adriatic Sea. The presence of the carotenoids was determined by means of columnar and thin-layer chromatography. The following carotenoids were found: Leander serratus: -carotene, echinenone, isocryptoxanthin, cryptoxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein, isozeaxanthin, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, and astacene; Nephrops norvegicus: -carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, and astacene.  相似文献

The effects of various potential cues on the survival and time to metamorphosis of larvae of the sand crab Emerita talpoida (Say) were examined. Zoeal duration, which ranged from 25 to 43 d, was not correlated with subsequent megalopal survival but had a weak, negative correlation with the duration of the megalopal stage. Neither food, sand nor water from containers with adults directly affected megalopal survival or duration. In a second experiment, the presence of sand both increased the probability of survival and shortened the duration of late zoeal stages. This is the first experimental evidence for delayed zoeal metamorphosis in a decapod. Settlement of E. talpoida appears to occur primarily during the zoeal phase, not at the megalopal stage.  相似文献

This study analyzed the reproduction and growth of freshwater prawn, Palaemon paucidens De Haan 1844 from Suk-dang lake(Korea). The analysis of the sex ratio showed a higher proportion of males than that of females. The average size of the eggs was 6.12 (+/-0.55) mm3 in the non-eyed stage (stageA) and 7.20 (+/-0.86)mm3 in the eyed stage (stage B). The reproductive output (RO) calculated with the dried-body weight of an incubating female and the weight of the eggs in dried condition was 26.97% (n = 17) of the average females weight. Incubating prawn appeared in April, and the gonadosomatic indices(GSI) showed the highest value during three months from January to March. Based on the month when there was a high proportion of incubating females with a high GSI, the estimated spawning season of P. paucidens was April. The maturity of the female was evaluated by the development of the ovaries and the existence of eggs. The average body length when 50% of the females in the group reached maturity was 8.55 (+/-2.74) mm. The analysis of the length-frequency distribution showed that the life span of P. paucidens ranged from 12 to 13 months. Females mature faster than males.  相似文献

Caprella danilevskii Czerniavski, an epifaunal amphipod crustacean, was successfully reared for two generations under laboratory conditions. Amphipods were maintained in pairs or fours in a Petri dish. Temperature and photoperiod were maintained at 20°C, and 14 h light: 10 h dark, respectively. Colonies of the diatomCylindrotheca closterium (Ehrenberg) Reumann and Lewin were provided as food source. The red algaGelidium amansii (Lamouroux) Lamouroux was used to provide an attachment substrate for the caprellids. Juveniles that emerged from the brood pouch were described as instar I. Subsequent instars were identified by molts. Juveniles molted successively at 2.5 to 6.5 d intervals. The body length of males at each instar increased exponentially, while that of females followed a sigmoid curve. A different pattern of flagellar segment addition in the antenna I of males and females was revealed. At the age of 20.8 d, females reached instar VII, and produced their first embryos. After 5.1 d, juveniles emerged from the brood pouch. On average, females produced 5.4 clutches successively at 5.0 d intervals. The number of offspring per spawning increased from 6.3 at instar VII to 22.0 at instar XII. The total number of offspring was 69.0 for a female throughout her life span.  相似文献

Early development was examined, under various salinities, for two sympatric nereidid polychaetes, Hediste japonica and H. diadroma, which participated in a simultaneous reproductive swarming in an estuary of the Omuta-gawa River in Ariake Sea, Japan. The eggs of both species were isotonic to the medium of 27.5–30 psu salinity. The egg diameter in the isotonic salinity was 180–205 μm in H. japonica, and 130–160 μm in H. diadroma. Successful development of most embryos was observed in a salinity range of 22.5–30 psu in both species, while successful fertilization occurred in wider ranges of salinity, i.e., 10–34 psu in H. japonica and 10 to 30 psu in H. diadroma. In both species, free-swimming larval life started from the indistinct hatching of trochophores out of a jelly layer capsule. The lecithotrophic development appeared to run to the 4-setiger nectochaetes in H. japonica, while to 3-setiger nectochaetes in H. diadroma, resulting in a shorter pelagic larval life in H. japonica. In a comparison of larval morphology among Hediste species, we found a definite negative correlation between the prostomium width, which represents the larval size and depends on egg size, and relative length of chaetae to the prostomium width: the relative length of chaetae was the longest in H. diadroma (with the smallest egg size and long pelagic life), intermediate in H. japonica (intermediate egg size, short pelagic life), and the shortest in H. atoka (largest egg size, no true pelagic life). We also examined the possibility of hybridization between H. japonica and H. diadroma through cross-insemination experiments. The gametes of the two species were reciprocally compatible, and viable hybrid offspring were produced by the laboratory crosses. The hybrid larvae expressed intermediate phenotypes, but with a greater maternal influence in characteristics such as the relative length of chaetae and the lecithotrophic larval duration.  相似文献

The annual cycle of ovarian activity and eyestalk effects on the ovary in different phases of its activity were examined in the crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii Gould ssp. tridentatus Maitland, and the sand shrimp Crangon crangon L. In both species, the annual ovarian cycle consists of two phases of vitellogenesis and the resting phase. In R. harrisii, the eyestalks exert an inhibitory effect on vitellogenesis during the phase of vitellogenesis outside the breeding season, and are necessary for the process of oviposition during the breeding season. In C. crangon, ovary-inhibiting hormone is present in the eyestalks outside the breeding season, and has not been detected during this season. The resting phase of the ovary after the breeding season is caused by the ovary-inhibitiing hormone. Females of C. crangon are a suitable material for testing ovary-inhibiting hormone activity, while female R. harrisii are not.  相似文献
