We experimentally investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing, deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Intact sediment cores with in situ density and species composition of zooplankton resting eggs and benthic fauna were collected in the northern Bothnian Sea, part of the Baltic Sea. We removed as many M. affinis as possible from the cores and then added different numbers of M. affinis to the cores to generate a range of densities. The cores were exposed to different densities of M. affinis for either 3 or 40 days, after which the hatched zooplankton was registered. One subset of the cores were initially incubated under low temperature (2–3 °C, to prevent hatching) for 37 days (the resting phase), to allow for effects of M. affinis on unhatched resting eggs. These cores were then incubated under higher temperature (13 °C) for 3 days (the hatching phase), to induce hatching and allow for effects on hatching or hatched specimens. In a second subset of cores with the same time and temperature schedule, the M. affinis density was experimentally reduced at the start of the hatching phase, to evaluate the effect of M. affinis during the hatching phase. To a third subset of cores, we immediately initiated the hatching phase, without an experimental resting phase, to evaluate the effects induced during the resting phase. The most common zooplankton species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda), followed by Bosmina longispina maritima (Cladocera). In all cores that were subjected to a resting phase, the numbers of hatched E. affinis were log-linearly negatively related to density of M. affinis. An increase of M. affinis density from 1,000 to 5,000 individuals m−2, normal field densities, reduced the hatching by 60–70%. The negative impact was mainly exerted during the hatching phase, suggesting predation on, burial of or physical injury of hatching nauplii or eggs in a late development stage as likely mechanisms. Also, the number of B. longispina maritima that hatched was reduced by M. affinis during the hatching phase, but no clear relation to density of M. affinis could be identified. The results show that M. affinis can reduce recruitment to zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Such impact by the benthos on resting stages of zooplankton is therefore a potentially significant link between the benthic and pelagic systems. Seasonal variations in the oxygen uptake rate ( ) and ammonia excretion rate ( ) of the benthic deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis vere studied in an open-sea population of the northern Baltic Sea during three consecutive years (1991 to 1993). In the early summer an increase in the weightspecific by 22% (standard 1-mg individual) was registered; an even more striking change was noted in the , which showed an increase in the early summer of ca. six times the extremely low winter/spring valnes. The metabolic changes observed could not be attributed to temperature, which remained at steadystate throughout the year, nor could seasonal variations in the biochemical composition of the amphipods explain the results. Therefor, it is evident that quality-food abundance following the sedimentation of the spring phytoplankton bloom induces the observed early-summer elevations in and . In turn, the marked decrease in the towards autumn reflects the gradual depletion of quality-food in the benthic environment. Atomic O: N ratios indicated that at the sampling location, M. affinis uses lipid almost exclusively for metabolic energy throughout the year, except in early summer when the use of lipid and protein was observed to be almost equal. Results also indicated a time-lag between sedimentation of the phytoplankton bloom and metabolic response in the amphipod population.  相似文献

The membrane fluidity of the Baltic Sea crustaceans Gammarus spp. and Monoporeia affinis was studied in different seasons. Gammarus spp. were collected at a location with stable salinity and with temperature fluctuations from about 0 to 20 °C, and M. affinis at a deep location with stable salinity and a constant low temperature of about 1.5 to 4.5 °C. The membrane fluidity was measured from preparations enriched with plasma and mitochondrial membranes employing a fluorescence polarization technique using 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) as a probe. The measurements were carried out without any preceding acclimation of the animals. In Gammarus spp., the membrane fluidity increased in the order: summer animals < autumn animals < spring animals. The differences between seasons were significant, with pronounced homeoviscous adaptation, and correlated well with the water temperature. It is suggested that in Gammarus spp., temperature is the determining factor for membrane fluidity. In M. affinis, the membranes of summer animals were the most fluid, and there was a significant difference only between summer and spring animals. In M. affinis the difference was not connected to the water temperature and no homeoviscous adaptation was noticed. The deep-water M. affinis experience a long period of fresh food deficiency, which probably affects the membrane fluidity. Although there are seasonal differences in fluidities between Gammarus spp. and M. affinis, it is interesting to note that all data obtained from M. affinis settled between the polarization lines of spring and summer Gammarus spp., regardless of the prevailing temperatures. We investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the potential for recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Hatching of resting eggs was induced in the laboratory on sliced and resuspended 1-cm depth-sections of sediment cores, collected at six stations in an archipelago area of the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea. The uppermost 5 cm of the sediment was studied. The most common species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda). Individuals from another copepod genus, Acartia, hatched in significant numbers only in the cores from two stations with low amphipod abundance. Cores from stations with high amphipod densities showed a deeper distribution of emerging E. affinis nauplii compared with stations with few amphipods; the oxidised sediment layer was also deeper at high M. affinis densities than at low. Total (0 to 5 cm strata pooled) number of hatched E. affinis nauplii was independent of amphipod density. This indicates that the effect of M. affinis on E. affinis eggs involves deeper burial due to bioturbation, rather than predation. Decreased benthic recruitment of zooplankton at localities with high M. affinis density is suggested, since more deeply positioned eggs are less likely to hatch. When hatching was induced in intact, non-sliced cores from one station, the number of E. affinis nauplii that hatched was on average 43% of the number that hatched in the upper centimetre of the sliced cores from the same station. This fraction (43%), if applied to the other stations, implied a potential for benthic recruitment of up to 80 000 ind m−2 for E. affinis. Due to its high abundance, M. affinis is likely to greatly reduce benthic recruitment of zooplankton in this system. Received: 17 September 1999 / Accepted: 23 February 2000  相似文献

The dietary habits of the pelagic mysid Mysismixta were studied during its growing season at an open sea location in the Gulf of Finland, the northern Baltic Sea. Stomach samples were taken twice a month from June to September 1997. The most abundant phytoplankton taxa in the stomachs were diatoms and dinoflagellates, and copepods and cladocerans were the most abundant zooplankton identified. A clear change was found in the diets during the study period. Small mysids (3 to 6 mm) fed on sedimented phytoplankton in the early summer (90% benthic particles in June) but shifted gradually to a more pelagic and carnivorous diet (>40% pelagic particles, consisting of ca. 60% zooplankton in September). Seasonal changes in mysid capture ability as well as food availability were suggested to affect the diet composition of mysids during their growth. The ratio of pelagic and benthic food particles could – irrespective of the season – be explained by mysid size, whereas the zooplankton:phytoplankton ratio was better explained by season. The stomach analysis suggests that the mysids needed to attain a threshold size of 8 to 11 mm to initiate feeding on the more evasive copepods. Mysids also started to grow faster at the same time as the proportion of copepods increased in the diet, which suggests that copepods are an important energy source for M. mixta in late summer. Finally, a comparison was made between the M. mixta diet and that of the less abundant M. relicta. The diets of the two pelagic mysid species overlapped by 75% (Schoener's index). The main difference was due to M. mixta eating more zooplankton and pelagic material than M. relicta. Received: 15 September 1999 / Accepted: 18 January 2000  相似文献

Genetic variation at the mannosephosphate isomerase (MPI) locus was examined in the euryhaline sibling species Gammarus zaddachi Sexton and G. salinus Spooner. Both crustacean amphipods share identical enzyme mobilities, following electrophoresis on vertical starch gels. The MPI locus turned out to be highly polymorphic; it is encoded by 6 alleles in G. zaddachi and 7 alleles in G. salinus. Geographic variation of allelic diversity was studied in samples from 9 G. zaddachi and 10 G. salinus populations, primarily obtained from Baltic Sea and North Sea sites. Patterns of inter- and intraspecific heterogeneity are described. Differences in allelic composition exist between Baltic and North Sea samples of G. salinus. In G. zaddachi, levels of polymorphism are higher in North Sea populations than in those from Baltic Sea areas. The significance of these findings is discussed in the light of previous biochemical genetic investigations on the population structure of the two amphipods considered.  相似文献

Excretion of ammonia by mesozooplankton (>200 m zooplankton) and its potential contribution to the nitrogen requirement for phytoplankton growth has been estimated for different hydrographical situations along a transect across the Catalan Sea (Northwestern Mediterranean). The nitrogen excreted as ammonia was estimated from mesozooplankton biomass and specific excretion rates. Nitrogen requirements of phytoplankton were estimated by means of carbon fixation rates and C:N ratios of <200 m particulate organic matter. Minimum C:N ratios and maximum primary production, zooplankton biomass, phytoplankton nitrogen requirements, and nitrogen excretion of zooplankton occurred near the Catalan density front. On average, the nitrogen regenerated by the mesozooplankton accounted for 43% of the nitrogen requirements of the phytoplankton. The specific excretion rates of ammonia and the percentage of phytoplanktonnitrogen requirements supplied by excreted nitrogen were higher at coastal stations. In some coastal and frontal stations, the ammonia excreted exceeded the phytoplanktonnitrogen demand. Bacteria competing for nutrient supply and the possible uncoupling between rate processes and standing stocks of phyto- and zooplankton could explain the apparent excess of regenerated ammonia.  相似文献

Low densities of harbour porpoises in winter (November–March) and high densities in summer (April–October) were found in the Sound, connecting the Baltic Sea and Kattegat. Due to their high energy requirements, it is hypothesized that the density of harbour porpoises is related to local prey abundance. This was tested by examining the stomach content of 53 harbour porpoises collected between 1987 and 2010 in the Sound (high season, 34 porpoises; low season, 19 porpoises). A total of 1,442 individual fish specimens from thirteen species were identified. Twelve of these were present in the high–porpoise density season and seven in the low-density season. The distribution of occurrence and the distribution of number of fish species were different between seasons, indicating a shift in prey intake between seasons. Furthermore, during the high-density season, the mean and total prey weight per stomach as well as the prey species diversity was higher. However, no difference was found in the number of prey species between the two seasons, indicating a higher quality of prey in the high-density season. Atlantic cod was found to be the main prey species in terms of weight in the high-density season while Atlantic herring and Atlantic cod were equally important during the low-density season. Prey availability and predictability are suggested as the main drivers for harbour porpoise distribution, and this could be caused by the formation of frontal zones in spring in the northern part of the Sound, leading to prey concentrations in predictable areas.  相似文献

Cladophora rupestris is a perennial filamentous macroalga belonging to the Chlorophyta. It is widely distributed on both sides of the northern Atlantic Ocean and penetrates into the brackish Baltic Sea down to ca. 4 psu salinity. In this paper we present evidence for genetic differentiation of a Baltic form of this marine alga. We assessed genetic structure within and among 11 populations ranging along a salinity gradient from the Norwegian coast to the northern Baltic Sea proper. Samples of 328 individuals were studied using starch-gel protein electrophoresis to evaluate genetic variability and interpopulation differentiation based on allozymes. Of 11 loci examined, only one was polymorphic. For this locus, encoding superoxide dismutase (SOD-3), a total of seven alleles were distinguished. We found two genetically differentiated groups of populations of C. rupestris, one Baltic Sea group and one North Sea group, with a distinct border in the southern Kattegat near the entrance to the Baltic Sea. The genetic differentiation for SOD-3, expressed as pairwise FST values between the populations, was generally higher within the Baltic Sea group (0.10-0.43) than within the North Sea group (0.05-0.10); in the latter group also fewer pairs of populations differed significantly. Pairs of populations from different groups had the highest FST values (0.20-0.60). Hierarchical analysis of variance showed that 29.6% of the total variation in the SOD-3 locus was explained by variation between the two groups, while only 4.2% was explained by variation among the populations within the groups. The remaining variation (66.2%) was found within the populations.  相似文献

During the 2010/2011 Exploration vessel Nautilus expedition to the Mediterranean Sea, samples of Lamellibrachia (Siboglinidae, Annelida) were imaged in situ and collected from hydrothermal vent and methane “cold seeps.” An analysis of these Lamellibrachia and their endosymbiotic thioautotrophic gammaproteobacteria reveals two distinct endosymbiont phylotypes. Phylotype 1 was present in Lamellibrachia specimens from 947 m at the Eratosthenes seamount seep (a seep off Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean), and Phylotype 2 was found in siboglinids from 618 m at a hydrothermal vent within Palinuro volcanic complex in Tyrrhenian Sea. Both phylotypes coexist in siboglinids at 1,036 m from the Palmachim disturbance, a cold seep in the Eastern Mediterranean’s Levantine basin. Our results, combined with existing knowledge of siboglinid host and endosymbiotic bacteria biogeography, reveal that two major groups of endosymbionts coexist within lamellibranchids and escarpids. The phylogenetic clustering of these bacteria is primarily influenced by geographic location, rather than selection by the siboglinid host.  相似文献

Concentrations of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and other perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were measured in water and sediment from coastal Bohai Bay and surrounding rivers flowing into the bay. Of the 15 PFCs measured, PFOS and PFOA were detected with the greatest frequency. Concentrations in water ranged from<0.2 to 31 ng·L?1 and<1.0 to 82 ng·L?1 for PFOS and PFOA, respectively. Concentrations of PFOS and PFOA in sediments ranged from<0.1 to 2.0 ng·g?1 dw and<0.1 to 0.5 ng·g?1 dw, respectively. Concentrations of PFCs in Bohai Bay were less than those observed in other areas in Asia, but greater concentrations of ∑PFCs were observed in the Dalin River with concentrations increasing from upstream to downstream, and the greatest concentrations in sediment were observed in tidal flats. The ratio of ∑PFCs in sediment and water indicated that sediment could serve as a significant sink for PFUnA.  相似文献

The burrow microhabitat and physiology of the echiuran worm Urechis caupo at a high-density site (Elkhorn Slough, California, USA), were investigated from 1987 to 1990 to determine physical and chemical conditions, worm density and distribution, and coelomic fluid characteristics such as heme composition, pO2, pH, and coelomocyte volume. During tidal exposure, worm burrows at this site exhibited, on average, 52% air-saturated water, 11M burrow-water sulfide, 85 g/mg wet weight sediment sulfide, and salinity and osmolalities similar to those of seawater. These conditions are compared to those of another California site, Bodega Bay, which had slightly lower oxygen concentrations, but higher water and sediment-sulfide levels. A more limited comparison to a third site, Princeton Harbor, California, is included. Worms from Bodega Bay, the higher sulfide site, had greater concentrations of hematin, a non-globin heme compound contained in the coelomocytes, and exhibited a greater tolerance to sulfide in the laboratory. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that hematin is a sulfide-detoxifying agent that may enhance survival of U. caupo in the sulfide-rich mudflat environment.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) and their stomach contents were examined and compared among various regions around Japan. Geographical variations in the isotope ratios were found between inshore and Pacific offshore regions. While most of the anchovy samples had isotope ratios around −17.6‰ for δ13C and 10.0‰ for δ15N as median values, higher (more enriched) isotope values were found in the anchovy sampled from inshore regions. On the contrary, lower (more depleted) values were found mostly in the anchovy from the Pacific offshore region including the Kuroshio Extension and Kuroshio-Oyashio transition zones. Higher carbon isotope ratios in the inshore regions may reflect a carbon source from benthic primary producers in addition to phytoplankton possibly through the consumption of the larvae of benthic organisms such as bivalves or decapods, which were found in the stomach contents of the inshore anchovy. Variations in the nitrogen isotope ratio may reflect not only differences in the trophic level of prey species, but also variations in the baseline level of food webs. Stable isotope ratios are potentially a useful tool for understanding the stock/population structure and migration of anchovy. The present findings indicate the potential importance of the “inshore–offshore” variations in the biology of Japanese anchovy populations in the northwestern Pacific waters.  相似文献

Two species of salps, Salpa thompsoni and Ihlea racovitzai, were sampled during three cruises to the Lazarev Sea, Southern Ocean, in summer (December–January) 2005/2006, Autumn (April–May) 2004 and Winter (July–August) 2006. Dry weight, carbon, nitrogen, protein, lipid and carbohydrate contents were measured to characterize the potential value of salps as a food source for predators in the Antarctic ecosystem. Biochemical composition measurements showed that despite having a high percentage of water (~94% of wet weight), both species had relatively high carbon and protein contents in their remaining dry weight (DW). In particular I. racovitzai showed high carbon (up to 22% of DW) and protein (up to 32% of DW) values during all seasons sampled, compared to lower values for S. thompsoni (carbon content only about 15% of the DW, protein content about 10% of the DW). At the same time, carbohydrates (CH) and lipids (Lip) only accounted for a small portion of salp DW in both species (1.4% CH and 3.6% Lip for I. racovitzai; 2.1% CH and 2.9% Lip for S. thompsoni). There was little variability in the biochemical composition of either salp species between the seasons sampled. Both biochemical composition and life cycle characteristics suggest that Antarctic salps, especially I. racovitzai, may be important prey items for both cold and warm-blooded predators in an environment where food is often very scarce.  相似文献

Rural America is witnessing widespread housing development, which is to the detriment of the environment. It has been suggested to cluster houses so that their disturbance zones overlap and thus cause less habitat loss than is the case for dispersed development. Clustering houses makes intuitive sense, but few empirical studies have quantified the spatial pattern of houses in real landscapes, assessed changes in their patterns over time, and quantified the resulting habitat loss. We addressed three basic questions: (1) What are the spatial patterns of houses and how do they change over time; (2) How much habitat is lost due to houses, and how is this affected by spatial pattern of houses; and (3) What type of habitat is most affected by housing development. We mapped 27 419 houses from aerial photos for five time periods in 17 townships in northern Wisconsin and calculated the terrestrial land area remaining after buffering each house using 100- and 500-m disturbance zones. The number of houses increased by 353% between 1937 and 1999. Ripley's K test showed that houses were significantly clustered at all time periods and at all scales. Due to the clustering, the rate at which habitat was lost (176% and 55% for 100- and 500-m buffers, respectively) was substantially lower than housing growth rates, and most land area was undisturbed (95% and 61% for 100-m and 500-m buffers, respectively). Houses were strongly clustered within 100 m of lakes. Habitat loss was lowest in wetlands but reached up to 60% in deciduous forests. Our results are encouraging in that clustered development is common in northern Wisconsin, and habitat loss is thus limited. However, the concentration of development along lakeshores causes concern, because these may be critical habitats for many species. Conservation goals can only be met if policies promote clustered development and simultaneously steer development away from sensitive ecosystems.  相似文献

The distribution of Pleurobrachia pileus Müller, 1776 in the Black Sea was determined using plankton samples collected above the anoxic zone (maximum of 200 m) in the winter, spring, and summer of 1991 to 1995. The summer samples were collected in 1991 to 1993 (for a previous) and are included in this paper for comparative purposes. High concentrations of P. pileus were found at the northern edges of anticyclonic eddies along the southern coastal regions. The biomass and abundance of P. pileus increased from winter through spring to a peak in summer. The highest mean wet weight during a sampling period was 250 g m−2, while the maximum wet weight was 1429 g m−2. P. pileus was mostly found in a layer extending from the lower parts of the thermocline down to the anoxic zone, where the temperature was <8 °C. The vertical distribution of P. pileus biomass had two clear maxima at night: an upper maximum at 20 to 40 m was less pronounced than the lower maximum at 90 to 120 m depth. Mean body length of P. pileus did not exceed 12 mm. Smaller individuals (9 to 10 mm length) occurred in winter. P. pileus had two length classes in early spring (March 1995) and late summer (August 1993), indicating the presence of both newly hatched and larger individuals. Overall, the stomach contents of P. pileus consisted mainly of Copepoda (90%), Cladocera (1%), Mollusca (1%), fish eggs and larvae (1%), and other taxa (7%). The preferred food of P. pileus (frequency of occurrence) was: Calanus euxinus (39%), Pseudocalanus elongatus (30%), Acartia clausi (28%), Oithona similis (2%), and Paracalanus parvus (1%). The endoparasite Hysterothylacium aduncum was commonly found in P. pileus. Abundances of Mnemiopsis leidyi and P. pileus were either negatively correlated (r = −0.5 to −0.7) or positively correlated at a low significance level (r = 0.25 to 0.3) with abundance of A. clausi in different months of the year. Aurelia aurita abundance was correlated mainly with the abundance of C. euxinus from June 1991 to March/April 1995. Over the same period the abundance of P. pileus was significantly correlated with the abundance of P. elongatus, an important prey species. The seasonal and spatial distribution of Pseudocalanus acuspes in the Bornholm Basin (Central Baltic Sea) was studied on 16 cruises between March 2002 and May 2003 from stratified (10 m) multinet samples. The highest abundances were reached in May 2002 and April 2003 (618×103 and 869×103 ind. m−2, respectively). Ontogenetic vertical distribution was stage specific with differences of mean annual weighted mean depth >30 m between nauplii and males; it followed closely the hydrography which was characterized by a permanent halocline and a summer thermocline. The vertical distribution showed a positive correlation with salinity especially in the older developmental stages; the relationship to temperature was negative in the nauplii and copepodite stage I (CI). Most of the stages performed a seasonal migration. The consequences of the vertical distribution patterns in relation to the effects of climate and predation are discussed. A stage shift from nauplii in April/May to CIV and CV as overwintering stages indicated slow seasonal development. However, nauplii were observed all the year round, and the resulting stage structure did not allow to distinguish generations. Changes in the prosome length of females seemed to be related to the advection of water masses with different temperatures rather than to different generations. It could not be clarified whether the strong increase of nauplii and adults after an inflow event of cold, saline North Sea water in the beginning of 2003 was a result of advection or improvement in habitat conditions.  相似文献

The three meiobenthic ostracod species Candona neglecta, Paracyprideis fennica and Heterocyprideis sorbyana are commonly encountered in the deep (20-40 m) soft bottoms of the Baltic proper, and may contribute more to the total meiobenthic biomass than any other group. Experimental data indicate substantial differences in their utilisation of settling phytodetritus, with C. neglecta able to exploit newly settled organic material to a larger extent than P. fennica and H. sorbyana. Ostracod species composition, as well as ostracod and sediment carbon isotope contents, were studied in the field from an area with local differences in potential food resources. The study was performed during the late period of summer blooms of the cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. Results showed that when all samples were taken together, adult C. neglecta (-22.4‰) was significantly more depleted in '13C than adult P. fennica (-21.0‰) and H. sorbyana (-20.3‰), indicating differences in food selection among the species. The flocculent sediment layer had, in all instances, lighter carbon ratios than did the lower layers. This trend was mirrored in most cases in the slight enrichment in C. neglecta compared to generally greater enrichment in the other two species. Carbon signatures of C. neglecta also varied significantly between stations, indicating that this species fed on different resources depending on location. Juvenile C. neglecta were far more depleted in '13C than adults and reflected the carbon signature of the cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon sp. The latter is known to be the most '13C-depleted phytoplankton member in the area.  相似文献

The seasonal cycles of abundance of populations of dominant calanoid copepods in the water column and of their eggs recovered from the bottom sediment in the central part of the Inland Sea of Japan are described. The numbers of both copepods and eggs fluctuated markedly with season in an essentially similar pattern among the 6 species studied (Tortanus forcipatus Giesbrecht, Calanopia thompsoni A. Scott, Acartia erythraea Giesbrecht, A. clausi Giesbrecht, Centropages abdominalis Sato, C. yamadai Mori). The density of eggs in the sea bottom was highest shortly before the population of adults and late copepodids disappeared from the plankton; the numbers of eggs then gradually decreased until the appearance of the next planktonic population.  相似文献
