The tolerance and resistance parameters of Mytilus edulis were investigated using probit analysis based on the dosage-mortality response curve. The effect of thermal acclimation on incipient lethal temperatures for a range of 5° to 25°C are described. The ultimate upper incipient lethal temperature is 28. 2°C. Changes in the thermal resistance parameters with size, photoperiod and salinity are shown to be statistically significant. The temperature of incapacitation of the mussel is defined in relation to the critical thermal maxima. A correlation was found between latitude and both temperature of incapacitation and temperature of spawning in the laboratory.  相似文献

The resistance to high temperatures of two species of intertidal tube-dwelling polychaete worms has been tested to show seasonal and geographic variations. The summer 50% survival temperature at Beaufort, North Carolina, was 42.5 °C for Diopatra cuprea (Bosc) and 40.5 °C for Clymenella torquata (Leidy). Winter 50% survival temperatures for both species at Beaufort were approximately 4.0 C° lower. Both species showed a geographic difference in 50% survival temperature of more than 4.0 C° between North Carolina and Massachusetts in summer. D. cuprea from the Mississippi coast showed a lower survival temperature, probably due to combined temperature and salinity effects. Laboratory acclimation of C. torquata from Beaufort at low temperatures, during summer months, produced experimental results similar to those from winter animals. The seasonal differences in temperature tolerance are phenotypic expressions of a physiological response which can be related to environmental temperature patterns.  相似文献

Specimens of Chlamys opercularis, Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas, Scrobicularia plana and Mya arenaria were exposed to both gradual (sinusoidal) and abrupt (square-wave) salinity fluctuations and measurements made of osmotic, Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations in the hemolymph and where applicable in the mantle fluid. In both sinusoidal and square-wave regimes fluctuating between 100 and 50% seawater (100%=ca. 32 S), the hemolymph Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and osmotic concentrations followed the concentrations of the external medium in Chlamys opercularis. The hemolymph and mantle fluid osmotic Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations of Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas and S. plana followed those of the external medium as long as the molluscs' shell valves remained open. There were no changes in the ionic or osmotic concentrations of the hemolymph or mantle fluid of any of these species during periods of shell-valve closure. The hemolymph osmotic, Na+ and Mg2+ concentrations of wedged-open Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, C. gigas and S. plana followed those of the external medium. Hemolymph Ca2+ concentrations showed a damped response in C. gigas and Mytilus edulis. The hemolymph osmotic, Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations of Mya arenaria fluctuated in a similar manner to the external medium, but were damped. Wedged-open Mytilus edulis exposed to fluctuating salinity and supplied with a constant supply of 10 mM Ca2+ showed greater changes in hemolymph ionic and osmotic concentrations than M. edulis exposed to the same salinity fluctuation without a constant Ca2+ supply. Chlamys opercularis and Modiolus modiolus survived in a 50% seawater minimum sinusoidal salinity fluctuation for 10 days; wedged-open M. modiolus survived only 3 days. Burrowing had no effect on the osmotic, Na+, Mg2+ or Ca2+ concentrations of the hemolymph of Mya arenaria or S. plana exposed to fluctuating salinities. Photosynthesis and respiration rates of the reef corals Pocillopora damicornis (Linn.), Montipora verrucosa (Lamarck), Porites compressa Dana and Fungia scutaria Lamarck were measured under controlled temperatures. Results indicate that coral metabolism is closely adapted to ambient temperature conditions. Tropical corals measured at Enewetak, Marshall Islands, showed greater primary production compared to maintenance requirements at elevated temperatures than did subtropical varieties of the same species in Hawaii. Photosynthesis: respiration (P:R) ratios were significantly and negatively related with temperature between 18° and 31°C for all Hawaiian corals, whereas at Enewetak this ratio generally showed a curvilinear relationship for this temperature range. Extrapolations of P:R regressions on temperatures to a value of 2.0 (estimated as a minimum required for long-term functional autotrophy) coincide for Hawaiian specimens with published upper lethal temperatures. Extrapolation of P:R regressions for Enewetak specimens at temperatures above 25°C suggests lethal temperatures for these corals to be 2 to 5 C° higher than for Hawaiian corals, in good agreement with recent experimental findings. Individuals of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (L), collected from the Black Sea, were subjected to relatively high temperatures (25°, 28° and 30°C) for 60 h Ultrastructural studies on Leydig cells of the mantle indicated progressive modifications in their structure. Mainly, we established that a continuous decrease of glycogen quantity in the cells took place as the temperature raised, while the lipid content increased, up to 28°C. Between 28° and 30°C the lipid content decreased as a result of a pronounced degradation process. An increase of membrane permeability and the disturbance in the synthesis of mucoproteic secretory granules were observed. It is concluded that for Mytilus galloprovincialis the thermal adaptation zone ranges between 25° and 28°C. 28°C is the upper tolerable limit temperature, while 30°C acts as a lethal temperature.  相似文献

Lower and upper survival temperatures of microthalli of 25 species of South American Phaeophyceae isolated from central Peru (14°S) to the Canal Beagle (55°S) were determined using 2-wk exposure for the upper and 4-wk exposure for the lower limit. All species survive 4 wks at -2°C. With respect to the upper limit, species reported only from southernmost South America tolerate 19.9 to 24.5°C (n=8), and species occurring from Cape Horn to central Chile 24.6 to 27.4°C (n=7). Three species that occurred as far north as northern Chile and Peru before the 1982–1983 El Niño event, and whose northern limit was dramatically shifted southwards in 1983, tolerate 20.8 to 25.3°C, whereas five species that have survived in Peru tolerate 25.6 to 28.5°C. Tinocladia falklandica which tolerates 27.8 to 28.1°C but lives only in southernmost South America and Striaria attenuata, which tolerates 31.6 to 31.9°C but occurs at ca. 42°S, are exceptional. Their high temperature tolerance may have no adaptive value in South America. They are restricted to the cold-temperate region due to low temperature requirements for reproduction or for reasons yet unknown. In general, the northern distributional limits of the Phaeophyceae studied along the temperate Pacific coast of South America are reproduction boundaries, except in El Niño years when they are redefined according to the species' upper suvival limits. Temperature tolerance of isolates from northern Chile and Peru agrees well with maximum temperatures reached during the 1983 El Niño.  相似文献

Continuous temperature measurements were made in a typical South East African estuary. Mean summer (November to March) temperatures were in the range 19° to 24°C, and in winter (June to August) from 13° to 16°C. Large daily temperature fluctuations of 6° to 10°C occurred in summer; these appear to result from tidal movement of cool sea water into the estuary. In winter, temperature fluctuations were much smaller (3° to 5°C). The burrowing prawn Upogebia africana (Obtmann) was found to have an upper lethal temperature of 29°C in both winter and summer. The resistance time of prawns to temperatures above 30°C was much greater in summer than in winter. It was possible to acclimate winter prawns and increase their resistance time to a level comparable to that of summer individuals. A latent period of 40 h occurred before acclimation effects were detectable. Long-term exposure of prawns to high temperatures did not increase their resistance above that of summer prawns. Water at a temperature above this upper lethal temperature is not pumped through the burrows. This avoidance behaviour considerably increases the ability of U. africana to withstand short-lived temperature extremes.  相似文献

Investigations on the influence of pressure on the activity of alkaline phosphatase of some marine invertebrates from the Baltic Sea were carried out at temperatures between 5° and 55°C. The results obtained indicate that the influence of pressure on alkaline phosphatase activity is modified by temperature. At low temperatures, pressure has a decreasing effect on enzyme activity, while it has an increasing effect at higher temperatures. The gill homogenates of the relatively pressure-resistent bivalves Cyprina islandica and Mytilus edulis show a lower decrease of activity under pressure at low temperatures than the gill-homogenate of Carcinus maenas and a purified enzyme preparation of a homoiothermal animal.  相似文献

Temperature-pressure experiments have been carried out on gill epithelium of Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis (Baltic and North Seas), as well as on the skin, pharynx, and trunk muscles of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas), employing the technique of pressure fixation. Temperatures of 0°, 5° and 15°C have been combined with pressures up to 800 atm. Low temperature (0°C) intensifies disintegration of ultrastructures by pressure in comparison to 5°C. The highest degree of structural disorganization can be observed at 600 atm and 0°C. Increased temperature (15°C) increases pressure resistance, but the structural difference is more quantitative than qualitative. In pressure experiments, temperature probably affects cell organelles at the molecular level.  相似文献

Determination of the critical thermal maxima and upper lethal temperatures for Acartia tonsa Dana and A. clausi Giesbrecht revealed the relative temperature tolerance of the two species. A. tonsa exhibited a wider range of acclimation temperatures compared to A. clausi. The response of A. tonsa is related to its ubiquity in Atlantic Ocean estuaries (temperate and tropical), and its capacity to live in temperate waters throughout most of the year. Differences between upper lethal temperatures and critical thermal maxima were very narrow for A. tonsa from tropical and subtropical areas. Exposure of blue mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) to oil-polluted sea water for 7 d in the laboratory did not affect their body fluid concentrations of inorganic ions and free amino acids. Mussels exposed to-4°C for 12 h did not freeze, whereas freezing occurred invariably in mussels exposed to-7°C or lower temperatures for the same period. Following freezing at-10°C, oil polluted mussels resumed normal activity considerably more slowly than unpolluted ones, but oil-polluted as well as unpolluted mussels showed normal activity 3 h after thawing. Freezing at-15°C was invariably lethal to individuals of both groups. One possible explanation of the delayed recovery of oil-polluted mussels frozen at-10°C may be that oil components had become concentrated to toxic levels as the amount of solvent water diminished during freezing.  相似文献

An entire bed of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, consisting of 5,000 individuals/m2, died during June, 1971 in the effluent canal of a steam generating plant when the temperature increased above 27°C. Similarly, the population in the intake canal disappeared when temperatures rose above 27°C in August. Laboratory studies showed that M. edulis could not tolerate continuous temperatures above 27°C, and feeding stopped shortly after the mussels were exposed to 25°C. Histopathological studies indicated that the cause of death of this bivalve was associated with degeneration of the frontal and laterofrontal cilia of the columnar epithelium of the gill filaments. In conjuction with this, there was necrosis and sloughing of the epithelium of the intestinal diverticula. Behavioral and metabolic responses of the marbled rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus (Cuvier), to temperature were measured to define optimal thermal habitat. Preferred temperature was determined by means of a newly developed horizontal temperature-gradient tank. Acclimation temperature had a direct positive effect on critical thermal maxima and minima and upper lethal temperatures but no effect on final preferred temperature. It was indicated that upper temperature tolerance and final preferred temperature of the marbled rockfish were closely connected. Oxygen consumption rate increased with temperature to 23°C but Q 10 (the increase in rate caused by 10°C increase in temperature) declined above 20°C. The maximum Q 10 (4.69) occurred between 15 and 20°C. The final preferred temperature of 20.7 ± 1.5 °C corresponded well to the temperature at which increase in oxygen consumption rate with temperature gradually lessened, approximately 20°C.  相似文献

The effects of various factors on byssal thread formation have been examined in the laboratory using Modiolus demissus and Mytilus edulis. With M. demissus thread formation (threads/mussel/h0 and proportion of mussels forming threads decreased with increasing size; prior exposure to air enhanced subsequent thread formation; mechanical agitation reduced thread formation. In addition, low salinity acclimated mussels adapted more rapidly to 32 ppt than high salinity acclimated mussels did to 16 ppt; threads were not formed in the absence of calcium and/or magnesium; and there was no reduction in thread formation at temperatures as high as 27° to 28°C. M. edulis died and thread formation approached zero at temperatures exceeding 26°C.  相似文献

The survival of Orchestia chiliensis (Milne Edwards, 1840) was investigated at salinities between 0.3 and 68 and constant or 10 C° cyclic temperatures between 5° and 25° C. Mortality increased with age, temperature and at salinity extremes. Small individuals show little seasonal acclimatisation apart from increased thermal tolerance at the highest exposure temperature. Larger individuals show a lateral shift in the mortality curve to the right in summer, giving increased survival at most salinities. Salinity had less effect on amphipods in cyclic regimes and survival was similar in 5° to 15° C and 10° to 20° C cycles. Mortality of larger individuals was higher in the 15° to 25° C cycle, but seasonal acclimatisation gave increased resistance at all fluctuating temperatures during the summer. Mortality in cyclic temperatures was higher than at similar constant temperatures. O. chiliensis does not actively evade immersion and diel temperature changes of 10 C° represent an important stress factor. This would affect all life stages and influence field populations both in the winter and the summer.  相似文献

Veliger larvae of Mytilus edulis (L.) from Menai Straits, North Wales, were maintained for up to 2 mo during 1981 at 5°C and then grown on to metamorphosis at 17°C. Larvae so treated showed similar low mortality and equivalent spat production to control larvae. Growth rate at 17°C was less in treated larvae than in controls, but treated larvae grew a little during the period at low temperature. Larvae of Pecten maximus (L.) from the Irish Sea suffered high mortality at low temperature but larvae surviving 2 wk at 8°C could be grown on to spat at 17°C. The longevity of M. edulis larvae is discussed in relation to the genetic homogeneity of adult populations around the UK.  相似文献

A method for determining filtration rates in undisturbed suspension-feeding bivalves is described. Concentrations of particulate matter in the water collected in the inhalant (C i) and exhalant (C e) currents were estimated with an electronic particle counter. The clearance was calculated as , where Fl=flow rate through the tube collecting exhalant water. Only above critical levels of water flow (Fl) were clearances representative of filtration rates. At 10° to 13°C, the filtration rates (F, 1 h-1) within one or two orders of magnitude of dry weight (w, g), in Cardium echinatum L., C. edule L., Mytilus edulis L., Modiolus modiolus (L.) and Arctica islandica (L.) followed the allometric equations: 4.22w 0.62, 11.60w 0.70, 7.45w 0.66, 6.00w 0.75 and 5.55w 0.62, respectively. Five species of bivalves [Spisula subtruncata (da Costa), Hiatella striata (Fleuriau), Cultellus pellucidus (Pennant), Mya arenaria L. and Venerupis pullastra (Montagu)] filtered with the same rates as individuals of Cardium echinatum and A. islandica of equivalent soft weight. In Pecten furtivus and P. opercularis filtration rates were about twice the rates measured in individuals of Mytilus edulis of comparable body weight. The gill area in M. edulis increases with size at the same rate as the filtration rate.  相似文献

Acute and chronic upper and lower thermal limits and freeze resistance were investigated in the nonindigenous brown mussel, Perna perna, from the Texas Gulf of Mexico coast in order to assess its potential distribution in North American coastal waters. This species' long-term, incipient lower and upper thermal limits were 7.5°C and 30°C, congruent with the seasonal ambient water temperature range of 10-30°C reported for other populations worldwide. Effects of temperature acclimation and individual size on survival time were most pronounced on chronic exposures to lethal temperatures approaching incipient lower or upper thermal limits. When exposed to temperature increasing at 0.1°C min-1, the acute upper lethal limit was 44°C regardless of acclimation temperature or individual size. P. perna had a limited freeze resistance, being intolerant of emersion at -2.5°C. This species' narrow incipient thermal limits, limited capacity for temperature acclimation and poor freeze resistance may account for its restriction to subtidal and lower eulittoral zones of cooler subtropical rocky shores. Near extinction of P. perna from Texas Gulf of Mexico waters occurred in the summer of 1997 when mean surface-water temperatures approached its incipient upper limit of 30°C.  相似文献

A new technique is described for observing the structures and mechanisms of suspension feeding in bivalves using endoscopic examination and video image analysis. This method permits direct in vivo observations of whole, intact structures of relatively undisturbed specimens. No surgical alterations of shell or tissue are required for most species. Pallial organ activity can be recorded for future observations and analysis. Using this technique we examined three bivalve species, each with different degrees of mantle fusion:Mya arenaria L.Mytilus edulis L., andPlacopecten magellanicus (Gmelin). The specimens were collected between April and September 1990 at various locations in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, Canada. Particle retention by the gill and transport of material to the palps was observed, and velocity of particles moving on the gill was determined. We demonstrate that the endoscope-video-analysis system is an efficient and affordable technique suitable for studies of pallial organ function and mechanisms of feeding.  相似文献

The upper lethal tolerances of Tellina tenuis da Costa and T. fabula Gmelin were studied under a variety of temperature regimes in which both short-term and long-term mortality were noted; these included steady temperatures, acclimation at a steady temperature then exposure to a steady tempeature, and acclimation at gradually increasing temperatures. T. tenuis alone was also tested for variation in mortality rate according to the date of collection or to the size (i.e., age) of the mollusc. The results suggested that T. tenuis was consistently more tolerant than T. fabula, and that the difference in tolerance was around 5 C°. Both species readily acclimated to higher temperatures after steady temperature acclimation, but not under a regime of gradually increasing temperature. There was no significant, variation in the mortality rate of T. tenuis with season or age. It is suggested that, since the difference in temperature tolerance is not reflected in their respective geographical distributions, there may be some other stage in their life cycle, e.g. the larvae, which is equally susceptible to temperature extremes. The difference in tolerance is, however, reflected in their respective littoral and sublittoral distributions.  相似文献
