Pigments of the meso- and bathypelagic chaetognaths Sagitta macrocephala and Eukrohnia fowleri were studied by chromatographic analysis. Supplementary histological studies were also performed. Fat-soluble properties and absorption spectra of the chaetognath pigments indicated that all pigments were carotenoid, independent of chaetognath species or habitat. The major carotenoid in chaetognaths was very soluble in nonpolar solvents such as carotenes, although its absorption spectrum formed a single broad peak at around 460 nm. The characteristics of the carotenoids in the chaetognaths were different from those of the pigments in the plankton which formed their diet. It is therefore inferred that carotenoids in chaetognaths are not formed by the deposition of food pigments in the intestinal tissue, but are synthesized by the chaetognaths themselves.  相似文献

The predation impact of the two chaetognaths Eukrohnia hamata and Sagitta gazellae on mesozooplankton standing stock were investigated in three depth layers during two 24 h stations occupied in the vicinity of Marion Island in late austral summer (April/May) 1986. The zooplankton community at both stations was dominated by small copepods (Oithona spp., Microcalanus spp.), which accounted for >95% of total zooplankton abundance. Chaetognaths comprised <2% of total zooplankton abundance. E. hamata constituted >95% of the total chaetognath stock. The general trend in both species was decreasing abundance with increasing depth, which appeared to be correlated to the distribution of copepods (r 2 = 0.45; P <0.05). Gut-content analysis showed that copepods (mainly Oithona spp., Calanus spp. and Rhincalanus gigas) and ostracods were the main prey of both species, accounting for 87 and 61% of the total number of prey in E. hamata and S.␣gazellae stomachs, respectively. In the guts of S.␣gazellae, pteropods (Limacina spp.) and chaetognaths were also well represented. The mean number of prey items (NPC) for E. hamata ranged from 0.02 to 0.06 prey individual−1 which corresponds to an individual feeding rate (Fr) of between 0.05 and 0.12 prey d−1. For S.␣gazellae, the NPC values were higher, varying between 0.04␣and 0.20 prey individual−1, or between 0.15 and 0.76 prey d−1. The daily predation impact of the two chaetognaths was estimated at between 0.3 and 1.2% of the copepod standing stock or between 7 and 16% of the daily copepod production. Digestion times, obtained directly from laboratory feeding, were used in conjunction with a day/night series of field samples to estimate the daily ration and specific daily ration of Sagitta enflata Grassi, the most abundant chaetognath in the Gulf Stream near Miami, Florida (USA), during winter and early spring. Feeding was independent of time of day and increased with increasing chaetognath size from 1.7 prey day-1 for the 11.5 mm size class to 2.9 prey day-1 for the 21.5 mm class. The diet of s. enflata consisted of 94.8% copepods having a mean weight of 21.8 g, and 5.2% prey chaetognaths estimated to be two-thirds the length of the predators. The daily ration of S. enflata from 12.5 to 20.5 mm in length increased from 48.3 to 143.3 g of prey dry weight and from 18.5 to 48.1 g of prey carbon. The specific daily ration declined from 0.12 to 0.08 dry weight basis, and from 0.26 to 0.14, carbon basis, over the same size range. Prey chaetognaths contributed as much as 51% of the ration on a carbon basis.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and population dynamics of the chaetognath Parasagitta elegans Verrill were determined in the water column and hyperbenthic zone of Conception Bay, Newfoundland from April 1997 to June 1998. The water column depth at the study site (47°32.2′N; 53°07.9′W) was 235 m. The temperature below the thermocline was <0 °C the year round. Chaetognath samples from the water column were collected with a Tucker Trawl. Those from the hyperbenthic zone, were collected with an epibenthic sledge. Depending upon whether the hyperbenthic zone was assumed to extend either 1 m or 10 m above bottom, the grand mean, areal abundance of chaetognaths in the hyperbenthic zone ranged from 6% to 40% of the total abundance in the water column (including the hyperbenthic zone), and the grand mean, areal biomass ranged from 25% to 77%. Large, mature individuals were collected only in the hyperbenthic zone, whereas small, immature individuals were collected primarily in the water column. According to body length and ovary maturity data, three cohorts were identified in the hyperbenthic zone during the study period. Within each cohort, the length frequency of reproductively mature individuals was bimodal, with groups of mean length 33 mm and 41 mm reproducing from May to October. The recruitment period of juvenile chaetognaths extended from July to February, coinciding with the recruitment period of copepods. The estimated individual growth rate of P. elegans was 1.0 mg C year−1. The approximate generation time of the two groups of individuals with mean length at maturity of 33 mm and 41 mm was 450 and 780 days, respectively. This study demonstrates that a failure to sample the large, mature P. elegans living in the hyperbenthic zone leads to serious underestimates of the total abundance and biomass of chaetognaths and an inaccurate picture of seasonal population dynamics. Preserved samples of chaetognaths (Sagitta crassa) in Tokyo Bay contained normal specimens and knotty and flabby deformed ones. On the body surfaces of both normal and deformed specimens, three different types of periphyte were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM): branch-like growths, large numbers of filaments and protuberances. Some branch-like growths frequently covered almost the entire body of even normal chaetognaths. Bacteria were only observed on the abnormal specimens. Bacterial colonization occurred inside the body rather than on the body surface. Due to the growth of bacteria, muscles degenerated and chaetognaths became abnormally knotty and flabby. Abnormal chaetognaths occurred in Tokyo Bay more frequently in July 1979 (12.4%) than in June 1982 (3.9%). Food containing ratio (FCR) values, an indication of feeding activity, of the abnormal chaetognaths were less than 10% and no feeding rhythm was found, whereas normal chaetognaths had high FCR values with a maximum peak (more than 60%) between 20.000 and 23.000 hrs. Abnormal specimens sometimes had spermatophores on their body surfaces. It is obvious that abnormal chaetognaths had still been alive in the sea and that some of them not only fed on copepods but also copulated. However, feeding activity and reproductive behaviour were far lower in abnormal chaetognaths than in normal ones. Abnormal specimens were not larger than 9.0 mm and their mean body length was smaller than that of normal chaetognaths. This suggests that bacterial infection directly affects the mortality of the chaetognath population.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and phosphate excretion rates were measured on Sagitta gazellae Ritter-Zahony, in conjunction with body composition analyses (water, ash, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and phosphorus). Both water content (94.7% of wet weight) and ash content (53.0% of dry weight) recorded on S. gazellae were the highest and the lowest, respectively, among the chaetognath data being reported. Contents of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen of S. gazellae were the lowest among published values of chaetognaths. Metabolic comparison with other chaetognaths living in similar subzero water temperature revealed reduced rates in S. gazellae, while no appreciable differences were seen in the metabolic quotients (O:N, N:P and O:P ratios). The O:N atomic ratios were 10.5 to 15.9 indicating protein oriented metabolism. Reduced metabolic activity of S. gazellae is not due to their body composition as calculated daily metabolic losses of body carbon (0.50%), body nitrogen (0.38) and body phosphorus (1.6%) were also found to be lower than respective values reported on other congeners and even those of other zooplankton living in the Antarctic waters.  相似文献

We present the first study of the effects of ocean acidification on settlement of benthic invertebrates and microfauna. Artificial collectors were placed for 1 month along pH gradients at CO2 vents off Ischia (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Seventy-nine taxa were identified from six main taxonomic groups (foraminiferans, nematodes, polychaetes, molluscs, crustaceans and chaetognaths). Calcareous foraminiferans, serpulid polychaetes, gastropods and bivalves showed highly significant reductions in recruitment to the collectors as pCO2 rose from normal (336–341 ppm, pH 8.09–8.15) to high levels (886–5,148 ppm) causing acidified conditions near the vents (pH 7.08–7.79). Only the syllid polychaete Syllis prolifera had higher abundances at the most acidified station, although a wide range of polychaetes and small crustaceans was able to settle and survive under these conditions. A few taxa (Amphiglena mediterranea, Leptochelia dubia, Caprella acanthifera) were particularly abundant at stations acidified by intermediate amounts of CO2 (pH 7.41–7.99). These results show that increased levels of CO2 can profoundly affect the settlement of a wide range of benthic organisms.  相似文献

Seasonal biochemical composition and energy sources of Sagitta hispida   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
There are few available data on the biochemical composition of warm-water zooplankton in general, and chaetognaths in particular. Unlike populations from higher latitudes, many species probably breed to some extent throughout the year, with life cycles measured in weeks rather than months or years. Analysis of protein, fat, carbohydrate and ash in the chaetognath Sagitta hispida Conant over 1 year showed that, although protein is always the largest component, averaging 53% of the dry weight, it fluctuates widely. The non-protein fraction of the total nitrogen also fluctuates and averages over a third of the total. Experimentally fed and starved animals showed no such protein variability, which was ascribed, there-fore, to changes in environmental parameters other than food availability (e.g. salinity). Starved animals used up body protein, and the O:N ratio in freshly-caught animals also indicated a protein-based metabolism. Periods of starvation of at least 1/4 the length of its life cycle could be tolerated. S. hispida may be added to the list of a variety of planktonic groups over a range of latitudes and feeding habits, which appear to utilize protein as a normal energy source and reserve material.  相似文献

Cod (Gadus morhua L.) eggs may develop and hatch within temperatures of −1.5 to 12 °C, but little is known about the effects of very low temperatures on larval characteristics. Eggs of the Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) were incubated at 1, 5 or 8 °C from Day 1 after fertilisation until hatching, and transferred to 5 °C after hatching. Histological samples of the axial musculature were taken at hatching and 5 d after hatching, and the data on muscle cellularity from these samples were related to survival and hatching, size, developmental data and viability of the yolk sac larvae. All larvae hatched at the same developmental stage. Incubation of eggs at 1 °C produced shorter larvae with a larger yolk sac and more, small deep fibres at hatching than larvae from eggs incubated at 5 or 8 °C. The larval size difference was still present 5 d after hatching, a time at which the larvae from 1 °C-incubated eggs were less developed and less resistant to an acute viability stress test (65 ppt salinity). Although there were no differences between temperature groups in number and size of muscle fibres 5 d after hatching, the deep fibres of the 1 °C-group contained less myofibrils than the two other groups. The phenotype of the larvae at hatching was thus affected within these incubation temperatures. Although all groups were transferred to the same temperature after hatching, the lowest egg incubation temperature (1 °C) still had a negative effect 5 d after hatching, as these larvae were both smaller, less resistant to stress and had less functional muscles at the time of first feeding. Our conclusion is therefore that 1 °C is close to, or below, the lower thermal tolerance limit for normal functional development of Northeast Arctic cod.  The benthic response to a plume front was studied in two areas of the northern Adriatic (Mediterranean Sea) differently influenced by the Po River freshwater input. Sediment samples were collected in June 1996 and February 1997 from 12 stations. The adopted sampling strategy was able to identify the front line in real time by satellite images and to locate sampling stations along an inner–outer plume gradient in order to cover the benthic area beneath the river plume, where enhanced biological production was expected, and open-sea sediments not directly influenced by freshwater inputs. Meiofaunal parameters were compared to the physical conditions and to phytodetritus inputs, organic matter accumulation and bacterial secondary production. The sediments of the Adriatic Sea were characterised by high concentrations of phytopigments (0.6 to 13.9 μg g−1 for chlorophyll a and 1.2 to 17.7 μg g−1 for phaeopigments) and biopolymeric organic carbon (0.15 to 3.02 mg g−1). The plume system extended for a large sector of the northern Adriatic. In the northern area, a large and highly dynamic plume area was coupled with a sediment organic matter concentration significantly higher than in open-sea sediments. In the southern sector, where the plume area and the front line did not change markedly during the year, plume–benthic coupling was evident only in the sediments beneath the front, and corresponded to phaeopigment accumulation. Bacterial parameters and secondary production were high and significantly higher in the frontal area than at open-sea stations. Meiofauna density (1342 to 8541 ind. 10 cm−2) did not change either by season or between areas and was significantly correlated with phaeopigments and bacterial secondary production. Meiofauna displayed different responses to plume inputs in the two sampling areas. In the northern sector, meiofauna density was coupled with organic matter distribution and displayed highest values beneath the plume. In the southern sector, the densities of copepods, turbellarians and kinorhynchs displayed highest values under the front in summer, and the same applied to total meiofauna density in winter. Juvenile decapods and copepod nauplii significantly increased their densities in sediments beneath the front. Data presented in the present study suggest that plume inputs and frontal systems, enhancing phytodetritus accumulation and benthic bacterial response, might influence density, composition and distribution of meiofaunal assemblages. As river plumes are highly variable systems affecting the trophic characteristics of the sediments underneath, their dynamics should be considered when analysing mesoscale spatial changes of meiofaunal assemblages. Measurements of the O2 microdistribution around relict tubes of the polychaete Spiochaetopterus bergensis revealed an intense passive flushing of the tube structure if exposed to ambient flow. Flushing induced plumes, several microliters large, of O2-undersaturated water that spread downstream in a flow-dependent manner. The plume induced a very irregular interstitial O2 distribution around the tubes, with suboxic microniches. Mass balance calculations based on the measured exchange rates estimated the flushing rate of the relict tubes to be on the order of 5–11 μl tube−1 min−1 at the applied flow rates; this strongly enhanced the benthic solute exchange in the area. Given the high density of several thousand tubes per square meter in the central Skagerrak, this flushing rate has profound effects on the biogeochemistry of the otherwise impermeable sediment, which is unique in the sense that benthic diagenesis is completely dominated by manganese oxidation. In this article, we show how a disease could bias stable isotope analyzes of trophic networks and propose a strategy in the choice of tissues to be analyzed. In the past few years, a new pathology (brown muscle disease or BMD) affecting the posterior adductor muscle of Ruditapes philippinarum has emerged in Arcachon Bay. BMD induces a necrosis of muscle tissues which become infused by conchiolin and hence calcified. As muscle of mollusks are often used for trophic food webs studies through stable isotopic analyzes, this work investigated the effect of BMD on carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios of anterior and posterior adductor muscles of clams collected in February and August 2007. Infected clams displayed a lower condition index and a posterior adductor muscle δ13C enrichment of 1.2‰ in February and 0.7‰ in August. δ15N of posterior muscles was however not affected by the disease. Anterior muscle of diseased clams remained healthy and displayed the same isotopic signature as both posterior and anterior muscular tissues of healthy clam. Acidification significantly depleted δ13C in posterior muscles of infected clams, suggesting calcification, contrary to anterior muscles of infected clam and to both muscles of healthy clams, where no effect was observed. An X-ray diffractometry analysis confirmed the presence of CaCO3 (aragonite). Trophic food web studies relying on stable isotope ratios should utilize only healthy animals or anterior adductor muscles when expertise in mollusk pathology is lacking.  相似文献

Assuming that a male’s genetic characteristics affect those of his offspring, extra-pair copulation has been hypothesized to increase heterozygosity of the progeny—the “genetic compatibility” hypothesis—and the genetic diversity within litters—the “genetic diversity” hypothesis. We tested these two hypotheses in the alpine marmot (Marmota marmota), a socially monogamous mammal showing a high rate of extra-pair paternity (EPP). In a first step, we tested the assumption that a male’s genetic characteristics (heterozygosity and genetic similarity to the female) affect those of his offspring. Genetic similarity between parents influenced offspring heterozygosity, offspring genetic similarity to their mother, and litter genetic diversity. The father’s heterozygosity also influenced litter genetic diversity but did not affect offspring heterozygosity. Hence, heterozygosity seems not to be heritable in the alpine marmot. In a second step, we compared genetic characteristics of extra-pair young (EPY) and within-pair young (WPY). EPY were less genetically similar to their mother but not more heterozygous than WPY. EPY siblings were also less genetically similar than their WPY half siblings. Finally, the presence of EPY promoted genetic diversity within the litter. Thus, our data support both the “genetic compatibility” and the “genetic diversity” hypotheses. We discuss further investigations needed to determine the primary causes of EPP in this species.  相似文献

Utilization of energy substrates during calling activity in tropical frogs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Calling activity in frogs is energetically demanding to males because they usually perform at or near their physiological capacities. Metabolic fuel for muscle contractions during bouts of aerobic calling activity comes from carbohydrates and lipids that are stored in the trunk muscles. I monitored nightly calling performance in males of seven tropical frog species from two families, Hylidae and Leptodactylidae, and compared levels of glycogen and lipid in the trunk muscles from males collected before and after a three-hour period of calling activity. Trunk muscles from late-evening males in five species had up to 63% less glycogen than the trunk muscles from early-evening males; relatively little depletion was observed in two other species. Overall, glycogen reserves and rates of depletion were highest in species with very high calling rates. It was not possible to measure changes in the relatively large stores of lipid in the trunk muscles after only 3 h of calling. Nevertheless, intramuscular lipid stores probably provide a greater percentage of the energy needed for sound production than glycogen stores, and are largest in species with high calling rates. Conspicuous secondary sexual traits may have evolved as handicap-revealing signals or as badges of status. We present results of an experiment using males of the sexually dimorphic house sparrow (Passer domesticus), that support the idea that the male-specific bib can be both a handicap-revealing signal and a reliable badge indicating the physical condition of the bird. In a test of the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis, wild-caught adult male house sparrows were studied in captivity. Birds implanted with elevated doses of testosterone were more dominant, had higher circulating levels of both testosterone and corticosterone and they also harboured relatively larger ectoparasite loads. Higher parasite loads were also associated with individuals showing lower immunocompetence and larger changes in bib size. A new model for immunocompetence effects in sexual selection is introduced, integrating actions that the hypothalamopituitary axis exerts on gonads, adrenals and the thyroid gland. The ”integrated immunocompetence model” synthesizes both the ”handicap” (i.e. survival-decreasing) and ”badge of status” (i.e. survival- enhancing) models for evolution of secondary sexual traits.  The effects of cadmium exposure and dietary status on cadmium accumulation, fatty acid (FA) content and profiles were investigated in two colour forms of the shore crab Carcinus maenas. Groups of shore crabs were either starved or fed with blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, during a 40 d exposure period to 2 or 6 μM Cd2+ (as CdCl2). Starved green individuals accumulated more cadmium in haemolymph and hepatopancreas than did red crabs and green crabs fed during the experiments. In the red colour form, no difference in cadmium accumulation was observed between starved and fed individuals. In both colour forms, hepatopancreas contained more FA than gills and muscle. The FAs often present in the largest amounts in the tissues were 16:0, 16:1ω7, 18:1ω7, 18:1ω9, 20:4ω6, 20:5ω3 and 22:6ω3. However, saturated (SAFA) and mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) were dominant in hepatopancreas, whereas poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were dominant in gills and muscles. At the beginning of the experiment, the total FA content in the hepatopancreas was 111.6 mg g−1 (dry weight) for red crabs and 78.4 mg g−1 for green shore crabs. During the experiment, however, the FA content decreased in red crabs. This decrease was more pronounced for starved individuals than for fed individuals. Also, the decrease in FA content was more pronounced in crabs exposed to 6 μM cadmium compared to crabs exposed to 2 μM or crabs not exposed to cadmium. No change in FA content was observed in green shore crabs, irrespective of diet and cadmium exposure. For both colour forms, no change in FA content was observed for gills and muscle. In red crabs, a decrease was observed for all FAs in the hepatopancreas. This decrease, however, was more pronounced for SAFAs and MUFAs than for PUFAs, indicating that the metabolism of FAs during starvation and cadmium exposure is selective. The experiments indicate that green colour forms of shore crabs are more tolerant of natural stress such as starvation and anthropogenic stress, e.g. cadmium exposure, than are red colour forms of shore crabs. The circumpolar nudibranch Tritoniella belli Eliot occurs in abundance in shallow-water benthic communities of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Density estimates based on belt transects averaged collectively 0.46 individuals m−2 at three study sites between depths of 6 and 30 m in November 1996. At two of the sites, population densities increased linearly between 18 and 30 m depth (up to 0.7 and 1.15 individuals m−2 at 30 m depth). Individuals at all sites were rare or absent at depths shallower than 12 m. Size frequencies of individuals at the sites were similar, and a pooled analysis revealed a unimodal distribution skewed highly towards juvenile size classes. This suggests both recent recruitment and constant rates of mortality across size classes. The relationship between foot length and wet weight best fits an exponential growth equation, indicative of an allometric growth pattern. Distribution of T. belli in the field suggests that it is a habitat and diet generalist. Potential invertebrate predators include sea anemones and seastars, both of which co-occur in abundance in McMurdo Sound. Laboratory experiments indicate that the sea anemone Isotealia antarctica can capture and ingest T. belli. However, 70% of T. belli that are captured escape from the tentacles or, following ingestion, are rejected from the gastrovascular cavity. The seastars Odontaster validus, Perknaster fuscus, and Acodontaster conspicuus, avoid contact with T. belli, but if forced into contact with mantle tissues, retract their tube-feet. Mucus secreted from the mantle tissues, coated on to the tips of glass rods, and presented to seastar tube-feet, causes significantly longer tube-foot retraction times than control rods. Moreover, pieces of freeze-dried krill coated with mantle mucus are consumed significantly less often than untreated control pieces of krill by a benthic scavenging fish (Pseudotrematomas bernacchi). Employing seastar tube-foot retractions as a bioassay, we found the bioactive compound(s) are soluble in ethyl acetate, indicating they are lipophilic or moderately hydrophilic in nature. A regional benthic survey was conducted in 1994, and the data were used to assess the relationship among three habitat factors (depth, sediment grain size, and latitude) and the distribution of benthic infaunal assemblages on the southern California coastal shelf. Benthic samples were collected with a 0.1 m2 Van Veen grab from 251 sites on the continental shelf (10–200 m deep) from Point Conception, California, to the United States–Mexico international border. The relationship between habitat and assemblages was investigated by conducting a Q-mode cluster analysis to define groups of stations with similar species composition and then examining whether differences were present in physical habitat attributes among those groups of stations. Analysis of data from 175 uncontaminated sites yielded four habitat-related benthic infaunal assemblages along the southern California coastal shelf: a shallow-water assemblage from 10–32 m, a mid-depth assemblage between 32 and 115 m, and two deep-water (115–200 m) assemblages, one in fine and one in coarse sediments. These empirically defined points in the depth and sediment grain size gradients can be used to define reference habitats for the development of biocriteria. Benthic abundance and diversity were greatest in the mid-depth assemblage, conforming to predictions for benthic assemblages in regions of upwelling. For marine invertebrates, larval developmental mode is inseparably linked to the nutritional content of the egg. Within the asterinid family of sea stars there have been multiple, independent, evolutionary transitions to lecithotrophic development from the ancestral, planktotrophic state. To investigate the evolution of maternal investment and development within the Asterinidae, we quantified individual lipid classes and total protein for eggs and larval stages of closely related species representing three developmental modes (planktotrophy, planktonic lecithotrophy and benthic lecithotrophy). Within species, maternal provisioning differed between females indicating that egg quality varied with parentage. Maternal investment was related to egg size but, after correcting for egg volume, we identified two major oogenic modifications associated with the evolution of lecithotrophic development: (1) a reduction in protein deposition that probably reflects the reduced structural requirements of nonfeeding larvae, (2) an increase in deposition of a single class of energetic lipid, triglyceride (TG). The exception was Parvulastra exigua, which has benthic, lecithotrophic development and lays eggs with a lipid to protein ratio close to that of planktotrophs. This oogenic strategy may provide P. exigua larvae with a protein “weight-belt” that assists in maintaining a benthic existence. Asterinids with planktotrophic development used a significant portion of egg TG to build a feeding bipinnaria larva. For Meridiastra mortenseni, female-specific differences in egg TG were still evident at the bipinnaria stage indicating that egg quality has flow-on effects for larval fitness. In lecithotrophic asterinids, TG reserves were not depleted in development to the larval stage whereas protein stores may help fuel early larval development. Available data indicate that there may be two evolutionarily stable egg lipid profiles for free-spawning, temperate echinoderms.  相似文献
