A field data collection project was undertaken to investigate the short-term fate of dredged material discharged in the designated Miami Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS) before dredging of the Miami River and the Miami Harbor Turning Basin begins. the designated ODMDS is located in relatively deep water for discharge sites with a typical bottom depth of 150 metres and is also located in the western boundary region of the Gulf Stream current off Miami. Acoustical backscattering, current, particulate, temperature and salinity data were gathered over a three day period from April 24, 1990 through April 26, 1990. the major generic features of shallow-water discharge plumes were observed to be present: (a) the presence of a rapid convective descending plume portion; (b) impact of that plume portion with the ocean bottom and concomitant generation of a bottom surge; (c) rapid horizontal width growth of the descending plume through entrainment; and (d) retention of a residual plume portion within the water column. A well-mixed upper water column layer extending to a depth of 40 to 60 metres below the surface of the ocean permitted measurements of the plume entrainment coefficient free from bottom boundary, water column density gradient, and vertical current shear effects which are usually present in relatively shallow, e.g. less than 40 metres bottom depth, coastal ocean discharge studies. Entrainment coefficient estimates obtained in this study were between 0.5 to 0.7. the residual water plume material was tracked over one-half hour during each of eight discharge events and was transported in a north-northeast direction.  相似文献

The focus of this paper is on the dynamics of a dense current flowing along the continental slope, and the frictionally induced downward motion it experiences. In particular, the movement of the lateral boundaries where the isopycnals meet the bottom are considered. The current is taken to be wide compared to the Rossby radius, which is in accordance with observations and makes the dynamics quasigeostrophic. The time development of the plume thickness is studied, using three different parameterisations for the bottom friction.Independently of the choice of parameterisation, the following results are obtained: In the central part of the plume friction acts as a diffusive process to minimise the curvature of the upper surface of the plume. At the upper edge the plume quickly approaches a state with small slope, i.e. small geostrophic velocity and small frictionally induced downward flow. At the lower edge a tongue of dense water shoots out creating a widening layer. The thickness of the migrating layer is approximately equal to the boundary layer depth and its downward speed is comparable to the along-slope geostrophic velocity. The downslope end of the migrating layer may form a steep front which requires some precautions in the numerical procedure.  相似文献

Abstract

Bottom surges generated from dredged material discharges in the open ocean have been observed using high frequency acoustic concentration profilers in several field studies during the past five years. the locations, water depths, bottom slopes, oceanographic conditions, and dredged material composition differed from study to study. Observed surges at three dredged material disposal sites may develop more than one surge peak for a single discharge. for water depths of the order of 10 m, surge height of the leading peak was estimated to be about one quarter of the water depth. for water of greater depth, of the order of 100 m, surge height reached 70 m, about 70% of the water depth. Surge height is established instantaneously when dredged material hits the bottom, and remains relatively constant as the surge advances horizontally. Total surge length reached 150 m for water depths of 10 m when measured from the impact point to the leading edge. for water depths of more than 100 m, the surge length reached more than 100 m. Length of the leading surge peak was as large as 45 m at this water depth.

Dimensional analysis was applied to relate the surge height of the leading surge peak to discharge parameters and oceanographic conditions. Results showed that the ratio of surge height to water depth was proportional to 1/10 power of the ratio of discharge volume to the third power of water depth.  相似文献

Fish larvae were sampled in and below three separate sewage plumes associated with the cliff-face (shoreline) outfalls at North Head, Bondi and Malabar, and at three control (non-plume) sites located>8 km away from the sewage outfalls, at Long Reef, Port Hacking and Marley Beach, in nearshore waters off Sydney, south-eastern Australia. Samples were collected at the surface and at 20 m depth during three periods: December 1989, April/May 1990 and August/September 1990. In December 1989, a greater number of taxa were caught at both depths at the plume sites compared to the control sites, but this did not occur during the other two sampling periods. Similarly, in April/May 1990, greater numbers of the clupeid Hyperlophus vittatus but fewer anthiines were caught at both depths near the outfalls (plume sites). Myctophids were more numerous in surface samples, but not at 20 m, at the plume sites in both April/May and August/September 1990, whereas in April/May 1990, labrids and anguilliformes were less abundant at 20 m at the plume sites compared to the control sites. These differences in the numbers of fish larvae caught may have been an effect of the effluent plumes, but these results were only correlative. The results most probably reflect spatial heterogeneity in the distribution and relative abundance of fish larvae nearshore to Sydney. There were striking differences, however, in the number of fish larvae caught at the surface and at 20 m, and among sampling periods, but these differences were similar across all sites. Of the 46 taxa considered common, 33 occurred in greater numbers at 20 m than at the surface, whereas only 8 taxa were caught in greater numbers at the surface. The composition of the fish larvae also differed markedly among sampling periods; few taxa were common to all three sampling periods. Greater numbers of fish larvae were caught in April/May and August/September 1990 than in December 1989, particularly at 20 m depth. The data highlight the large spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the distribution and relative abundance of fish larvae nearshore to Sydney and the difficulty of identifying effects that are solely due to sewage plumes.  相似文献

Abstract

This study investigates the distributions and enrichments of trace metals in suspended and sinking particulate matter from southern East China Sea (ECS) north of Taiwan during the period April 1992 to April 1993. According to these results, concentration of suspended particulate matter in the inner shelf of southern China Sea, the upwellinginfluenced shelf break, and in Kuroshio water are 1.30 (surface)–4.2 (bottom) mg1?1, ca. 0.4 mg1?1 and 0.1–0.2 mg1?1, respectively, reflecting various influences of terrestrial inputs. A benthic nepheloid layer (BNL), apparently owing to resuspension of local and/or remote bottom sediments, formed over the shelf region. Temporal variations in trace metal contents and enrichments in suspended matter from the shelf region reflect the variation of metal inputs from Chinese rivers, particularly from the Changjiang runoff. the enriched metals are more likely to be derived from anthropogenic input, rather than from biological accumulation. in addition, a decrease in metal contents and an increase in salinity confirm the transport of suspended particulate metals from the East China Sea shelf to the open ocean. the feature of metal plume in the intermediate layer (550–800m) of Kuroshio water also verifies this occurrence. Moreover, the sinking particles collected from a sediment trap on the upper slope are relatively enriched in lithogenic matter and trace metals, suggesting the deposit of anthropogenic metals in the slope area.  相似文献

Gravity currents descending along slopes have typically been studied in quiescent environments, despite the fact that in many geophysical settings there is significant externally driven motion. Here we investigate how the head of a gravity current is influenced by interfacial internal waves at the pycnocline of a two-layer ambient water column. Our experimental measurements show that larger amplitude internal waves, interacting with the gravity current, reduce both the mass transport by the gravity current and its thickness. These results suggest that the ambient internal wave field should be considered when estimating transport by gravity currents in geophysical settings with strong internal waves, such as lakes and the coastal ocean.  相似文献

In nature, density driven currents often flow over or within a bottom roughness: a sea breeze encountering tall buildings, a shallow flow encountering aquatic vegetation, or a dense oceanic current flowing over a rough bottom. Laboratory experiments investigating the mechanisms by which bottom roughness enhances or inhibits entrainment and dilution in a lock-exchange dense gravity current have been conducted. The bottom roughness has been idealized by an array of vertical, rigid cylinders. Both spacing (sparse vs. dense configuration) and height of the roughness elements compared with the height of the current have been varied. Two-dimensional density fields have been obtained. Experimental results suggest that enhancement of the entrainment/dilution of the current can occur due to two different mechanisms. For a sparse configuration, the dense current propagates between the cylinders and the entrainment is enhanced by the vortices generated in the wake of the cylindrical obstacles. For a dense configuration, the dense current rides on top of the cylinders and the dilution is enhanced by the onset of convective instability between the dense current above the cylinders and the ambient lighter water between the cylinders. For low values of the ratio of the cylinder to lock height \(\lambda \) the dense current behavior approaches that of a current over a smooth bottom, while the largest deviations from the smooth bottom case are observed for large values of \(\lambda \).  相似文献

During the Queensland floods in the summer of 2010–2011, a flood-driven Brisbane River plume extended into Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, and then seaward, travelling in a northward direction. It covered approximately 500 km $^{2}$ . This paper presents a three- dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model investigation into the behaviour of the Brisbane River plume. The model was verified by using satellite observations and field measurement data. The present study concludes that the high river discharge was the primary factor determining the plume size and its seaward extensions. A notable finding was that the plume was a bottom-trapped type rather than a buoyant type. Further, the southerly winds were found to have moderately confined the alongshore extension of the plume, and had caused the plume to mix thoroughly with the ocean water.  相似文献

Gravity driven flows on inclines can be caused by cold, saline or turbid inflows into water bodies. Another example are cold downslope winds, which are caused by cooling of the atmosphere at the lower boundary. In a well-known contribution, Ellison and Turner (ET) investigated such flows by making use of earlier work on free shear flows by Morton, Taylor and Turner (MTT). Their entrainment relation is compared here with a spread relation based on a diffusion model for jets by Prandtl. This diffusion approach is suitable for forced plumes on an incline, but only when the channel topography is uniform, and the flow remains supercritical. A second aspect considered here is that the structure of ET’s entrainment relation, and their shallow water equations, agrees with the one for open channel flows, but their depth and velocity scales are those for free shear flows, and derived from the velocity field. Conversely, the depth of an open channel flow is the vertical extent of the excess mass of the liquid phase, and the average velocity is the (known) discharge divided by the depth. As an alternative to ET’s parameterization, two sets of flow scales similar to those of open channel flows are outlined for gravity currents in unstratified environments. The common feature of the two sets is that the velocity scale is derived by dividing the buoyancy flux by the excess pressure at the bottom. The difference between them is the way the volume flux is accounted for, which—unlike in open channel flows—generally increases in the streamwise direction. The relations between the three sets of scales are established here for gravity currents by allowing for a constant co-flow in the upper layer. The actual ratios of the three width, velocity, and buoyancy scales are evaluated from available experimental data on gravity currents, and from field data on katabatic winds. A corresponding study for free shear flows is referred to. Finally, a comparison of mass-based scales with a number of other flow scales is carried out for available data on a two-layer flow over an obstacle. Mass-based flow scales can also be used for other types of flows, such as self-aerated flows on spillways, water jets in air, or bubble plumes.  相似文献

A kinematic model is developed to predict the movement of effluent from the City of Miami ocean outfall. The outfall terminates at the 5 m isobath in the near vicinity of three tidal inlets opening into Biscayne Bay. Due to the shallow, uncomplicated topography and oscillatory coastal currents a linear bottom friction law is valid, which justifies the use of a potential flow model. The inlets are modeled as sinks and the outfall as a source discharging into a uniform coastal current. The model predicts that effluent will enter Biscayne Bay in approximately 3 h during flood tide for coastal current headings within an arc of 210° to 40°. Dye-tracking experiments were in good agreement with the model results. Local wind records suggest that sewage effluent enters Biscayne Bay on about 80% of the flood tides, or roughly 11 times per week.  相似文献

Meiofauna are eroded from sediments and transported in the water column. To examine how meiofauna respond to erosive currents, in situ current speeds were altered on an intertidal sandflat located in Bogue Sound, North Carolina, USA in July 1982. Replicates of two different weir designs were erected. One design increased measured current speed and the other, a control, did not. The depth distributions of meiofauna in each treatment and from undisturbed sediment were compared. There were few differences among treatments in depth distribution of the most abundant taxa: nematodes, turbellarians, and ciliates (>37-m-long). However, a significant amount of sediment erosion (a mean of almost 0.5 cm in 2 h) occured in the increased flow treatment. Meiofauna responded to the loss of sediment with no discernable differences in depth distribution relative to the controls. There was some evidence that nematodes were less abundant and ciliates more abundant in the top 0.5 cm of the increased flow treatment. This may indicate that nematodes respond to fast surface current speeds by moving deeper into the sediments, while ciliates manage to remain near the surface even as sediment erodes. The entrainment of meiofauna may be passive but meiofauna clearly exert considerable behavioral influence over their susceptibility to entrainment.  相似文献

Growth rates of microphagous ciliates (forms which feed primarily on picoplankton-sized prey) were estimated, along with rates of their consumption by copepods, in shipboard experiments conducted in the mesohaline portion of Chesapeake Bay, USA, under contrasting water column conditions in April, June, and August 1987. Estimates were based on temporal changes in cell densities in size-fractionated water samples incubated under in situ conditions. In April, at low temperatures (7 to 10°C) and with oxygen present throughout the water column, similar generation times of ca. 1 to 1.5 d were estimated for surface and deep water (24 m) ciliate populations. In June, water was anoxic below 12 m and a distinct anoxic microphage community grew at about twice the rate of the surface community with generation times of ca. 7 and 14 h, respectively. In August, bottom water was again anoxic, but the sameStrobilidium sp. dominated both surface and deep waters with low or no growth apparent in anoxic waters and a generation time of ca. 8 h in surface waters. Copepod (primarilyAcartia tonsa Dana nauplii) clearance rates for microphagous ciliates in surface waters were 0.11, 0.56, and 0.53 ml h–1 copepod–1 for April, June and August, respectively. Calculation of removal rates, based on average densities, indicated that from 34 to 200% of surface waters were cleared d–1 of microphagous ciliates by copepods.  相似文献

An integral model for the plane buoyant jet dynamics resulting from the interaction of multiple buoyant jet effluxes spaced along a diffuser line is considered as an extension of the round jet formulation that was proposed in Part I. The receiving fluid is given by an unbounded ambient environment with uniform density or stable density stratification and under stagnant or steady sheared current conditions. Applications for this situation are primarily for submerged multiport diffusers for discharges of liquid effluents into ambient water bodies, but also for multiple cooling tower plumes and building air-conditioning. The CorJet model formulation describes the conservation of mass, momentum, buoyancy and scalar quantities in the turbulent jet flow in the plane jet geometry. It employs an entrainment closure approach that distinguishes between the separate contributions of transverse shear and of internal instability mechanisms, and contains a quadratic law turbulent pressure force mechanism. But the model formulation also includes several significant three-dimensional effects that distinguish actual diffuser installations in the water environment. These relate to local merging processes from the individual multiple jets, to overall finite length effects affecting the plume geometry, and to bottom proximity effects given by a “leakage factor” that measures the combined affect of port height and spacing in allowing the ambient flow to pass through the diffuser line in order to provide sufficient entrainment flow for the mixing downstream from the diffuser. The model is validated in several stages: First, comparison with experimental data for the asymptotic, self-similar stages of plane buoyant jet flows, i.e. the plane pure jet, the pure plume, the pure wake, the advected line puff, and the advected line thermal, support the choice of the turbulent closure coefficients contained in the entrainment formulation. Second, comparison with data for many types of non-equilibrium flows with a plane geometry support the proposed functional form of the entrainment relationship, and also the role of the pressure force in the jet deflection dynamics. Third, the observed behavior of the merging process from different types of multiport diffuser discharges in both stagnant and flowing ambient conditions and with stratification appears well predicted with the CorJet formulation. Fourth, a number of spatial limits of applicability, relating to terminal layer formation in stratification or transition to passive diffusion in a turbulent ambient shear flow, have been proposed. In sum, the CorJet integral model appears to provide a mechanistically sound, accurate and reliable representation of complex buoyant jet mixing processes, provided the condition of an unbounded receiving fluid is satisfied.  相似文献

The objective of this study is to determine the sedimentation rate and dispersion area of calcium carbonate residue dumped at sea and the impact to marine environment of dumping by a laboratory simulation experiment; chemical tracking in the field with the help of acoustic and optical tracking; and a comparative study of baseline conditions and marine environmental impact after dumping. Turbidity, pH and phosphate are selected as the chemical tracers to be monitored.

Results show that in the dumping area of 15 square miles with water depth of 50 m, if 217 t calcium carbonate residue is dumped (spot dumping) in the presence of a pycnocline with a current velocity of 60 cm/s (close to the maximum) the maximum dispersion distance of the calcium carbonate residue plume front is less than 2100 m; the dispersion area is less than 0.56 km2; and the maximum dispersion time is about 60 min when the turbidity and pH in the whole dispersion area return to background level. Therefore, the ocean disposal of calcium carbonate residue is feasible.  相似文献

Few investigations have examined the occurrence of zooplankton resting eggs in the sea bed of waters deeper than 20 m. In this study the distribution and abundance of planktonic copepods and their benthic resting eggs in coastal waters off northern California, U.S.A., were determined and related to environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, depth, and sediment grain size). Sediment cores, net tows, and CTD profiles were obtained in April and October 1989, and February, April, and October 1990. Water depths in the study area ranged from approximately 60 to 120 m. The mean abundance of eggs was as high as 1.2×105 m-2 for Acartia clausi Giesbrecht and 1.9×105 m-2 for Tortanus discaudatus Thompson and Scott. These egg concentrations are comparable to those reported previously for shallower more protected regions. The abundance of eggs in the sediments decreased with increasing depth of the water column. For the region as a whole, eggs were least abundant in muddy sediments. The mean abundance of eggs in the sea bed also varied seasonally and annully. Benthic resting eggs of A. clausi were more abundant in April 1989 than in April 1990, and adults of the species were never found in the plankton samples. The lack of adults is not unusual since results of previous studies indicate that A. clausi is a cold-water species, and in this region water temperatures are colder in summer, than in winter, due to upwelling. Temperature and salinity data indicated that the upwelling season had commenced by the time of the April 1990, but not the April 1989 sampling. Thus, the reduced abundance of benthic eggs in April 1990 may have been due to egg-hatching in response to reduced temperatures. The results suggest that the presence of A. clausi in coastal waters off northern California is linked to recruitment from benthic resting eggs.  相似文献

The Piratininga Lagoon is a coastal, choked, and brackish ecosystem in SE Brazil, where uncontrolled discharge of domestic sewage led to eutrophication, increasing massive proliferation of benthic macroalgae, and decrease of the lagoon mean depth. In 1992, a dam was constructed by the local Municipality at its tidal channel aiming at stabilising its water level. Main physico-chemical parameters, together with macroalgae biomass, nutrient concentrations in the water column, particulate organic carbon, and chlorophyll a were recorded monthly at 4 sampling stations within the Piratininga lagoon from April 1994 to April 1995. The data, compared with “before-lock” existing studies, show that nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations significantly increased after the lock construction. Based on the functioning of the ecosystem, we propose to harvest the algal mats before their decomposition period in order to partly remove the nutrient stocks from the lagoon and the future ecosystem modelling to predict the impact of natural and anthropogenic eutrophication.  相似文献

Estimates were made of the predation rate upon eggs of walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) in Shelikof Strait in the western Gulf of Alaska by midwater and near-bottom fish and invertebrate predators during April 1990. Adult and juvenile walleye pollock were the dominant (99% of total abundance) planktivores collected in midwater samples. Based on visual inspection of stomach contents, a high percentage of the sampled fish were found to have consumed pollock eggs. Daily egg consumption by older age groups of walleye pollock was estimated to be <1% of the eggs available at all sampling locations. The only other fishes found to consume pollock eggs were flatfishes collected in bottom trawls but their abundances and egg consumption were very low. Gammarid and hyperiid amphipods were important invertebrate predators on eggs in the water column, as determined by immunoassays using antibodies developed specifically to ascertain the presence of pollock egg-yolk protein. Decapod shrimp showed a high proportion of positive assays in near-bottom collections. Invertebrate predators may have consumed up to 4% of the total number of eggs available in the water column, but <1% of the total near the bottom on a daily basis. Although we were not able to account for the entire daily egg mortality estimated for this stock, our method of using a combination of techniques is promising in terms of future attempts at estimating total predation mortality.  相似文献
