Feeding units — viz. triplets of unequally-sized podia associated with protective lappets — occur all along the pinnules of adult Antedon bifida (Pennant). Small food particles are trapped by direct mucus impingement to the wall of primary and secondary podia (there are no mucus net or mucus thread helping in this process). Large particles are caught by primary and secondary podia which partly curl over them. Small particles accumulate on the collecting podia before being transferred to the groove, while large particles are transferred one by one. Transfer of particles to the groove occurs by wiping the collecting podia on the ciliary tracts against the ciliary current. When active, tertiary podia always paddle against the ciliary current. They serve in bolus formation (mucus embedding of food particles), but do not participate in bolus compaction or propulsion. Elimination of unwanted particles occur through the action of secondary podia whose movements may disrupt the lappet's palisade, thus creating a sideward current that moves particles from the groove to the outside. Typical podial triplets do not occur along brachial and calycinal grooves. Both brachial and calycinal podia function mostly in guiding and regulating particle flow. The feeding structures of early pentacrinoid larvae of Antedon bifida recall to mind those of pinnules of adult individuals. They consist of twenty-five podia arranged in five radial triplets alternating with five interradial pairs. They are similar to the pinnular feeding structures of adults in that they have both collecting (radial) and paddling (interradial) podia.  相似文献

Histological examinations of the gonads of Promachocrinus kerguelensis Carpenter, 1888 collected in November 1984 from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, revealed ripe ovaries containing three distinct size classes of oocytes: 20 to 90, 91 to 150 and 151 to 180 m diameter as well as ova. Testes were ripe, and filled with mature sperms. There was marked inter-pinnule and inter-individual synchrony of gametogenesis and spawning is probably synchronous, at least within the sub-population sampled. The number of eggs per pinnule is allometrically related to body size. Body weight and arm length are positively correlated with total egg number. Annual fecundity was estimated to be 29 000 eggs (full-grown oocytes and ova) for a crinoid weighing 53.6 g wet weight with an arm length of 16.3 cm. The eggs float. Female genital pinnules contain more lipid and energy than male pinnules. Reproductive output and effort (23.4 to 65.2 kJ and 26 to 38%, respectively) increase with body size and are similar to values reported for other echinoderms with lecithotrophic larvae. The greatest overall energetic contribution is represented by the arms and genital pinnules. Spawning in P. kerguelensis probably occurs in November and December within McMurdo Sound. If development is slow, as in all other antarctic echinoderms studied to date, then settlement most likely occurs 2 to 3 mo later, after the short summer period of high phytoplankton productivity. High fecundity, a pelagic mode of reproduction, and the high probability of a slow rate of development may contribute to the wide geographic distribution of this common antarctic crinoid.  相似文献

We obtained live specimens of the stalked crinoid Metacrinus rotundus from Suruga Bay, Japan, in 1992 and managed to keep them for several months in aquaria. Video observations of crawling individuals showed that both the aboral bending of the arm and the oral bending can be power strokes. When climbing up a lattice, the crinoids bend their arms aborally to pull the body upward. The oral side of the arm contains muscles, but the aboral side has ligaments without muscles. We found that ligaments on the aboral side are divided into two parts, the aboral ligament and the newly found fossa ligament. Ultrastructurally, the aboral ligament resembles typical echinoderm catch connective tissue. Its microfibrils exhibit a variable banding pattern after special staining and might be an elastic material. The fossa ligament contains only collagen fibrils which are often closely connected. Biomechanically the frozen and rethawed aboral ligament behaves like a spring. It shows between 2.4 and 29.1% stress relaxation, and it is so stiff that the oral muscles would not be able to stretch it. We suggest that the connective tissue of the ligament is a catch connective tissue and softens when the arm moves. During long-term filtration posture the ligament would stiffen so as to maintain its posture for a long time without muscle contraction and thus without using much energy.  相似文献

A toxic axenic strain of Alexandrium fundyense is shown to be capable of removing dissolved free amino acids (DFAAs) until concentrations are similar (low nM) to those found in natural waters. Uptake is greatest during exponential growth, rather than during C and/or N-stress as is usual in diatoms and other flagellates. A wide range of amino acids can be taken up, their concentration being decreased within a few hours to the levels observed prior to DFAA addition. The maximum rate of DFAA-N uptake, during early exponential phase, was 0.8 pmol-N cell−1 h−1, equivalent to ≃20% of the total N requirement. More typically, the contribution of DFAA-N was only ≃5%. However, these uptake rates are not sustainable. It is apparent that this organism cannot use amino-N to support significant growth, even though it can take up DFAAs. This, and the fact that the composition of the internal amino acid pool differed from that externally, is further evidence that the N-physiology of this genus is abnormal (differences to other dinoflagellates include an abnormally high concentration of glutamine and arginine, an effective absence of amine X, and release of nitrite during the␣concurrent assimilation of nitrate and ammonium in␣darkness). There is no evidence that the use of DFAAs enhance toxin content, except when cells are supplied with very high (unnatural) concentrations of arginine. Amino acid uptake and respiration by marine heterotrophs   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The concentration and turnover of dissolved free amino acids were measured in samples from 25 and 100 m on three occasions at a station 6 miles off the California (USA) coast. Individual amino acid concentrations varied from undetectable (<0.05 g/l) to 3 g/l, the total amino acid concentration from 1.8 to 8.5 g/l. The greater concentration of total amino acids was always found at 25 m. The predominant amino acids were serine, lysine, aspartate, glutamate and alanine; reliable analyses could not be made for glycine because of a high blank. For the 10 individual amino acids studied, the rate of heterotrophic turnover ranged from undetectable to 1.2 g/l day-1; serine, aspartate, alanine and glutamate showed the highest rates. In samples from 25 m, the rates were 15 to 20 times higher than those taken from 100 m. The total calculated flux of the amino acids studied varied from 0.015 to 3.2 g/l day-1 and amounted to 1–10% of photosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation.  相似文献

In 1983, Diadema antillarum suffered mass mortality throughout the Caribbean Sea and the western Atlantic Ocean. I followed the dynamics of populations at the San Blas Islands, Panamá from April 1983 to November 1987. Density measurements indicate that populations of D. antillarum have not recovered from the die-offs that killed nearly 97% of the individuals. There was recruitment to the 1 to 1.5 cm class immediately after the mass mortality, but there has been little additional influx of juveniles since then. The low number of observable juveniles could not be attributed to elevated rates of predation on very small individuals. Rates of recruitment did not differ between reefs with artificially increased densities of D. antillarum and reefs kept free of sea urchins; thus, the lack of recruitment did not arise from absence of adults that could provide settlement cues to the larvae or protection to newly settled juveniles. Other species of sea urchins did not show a clear pattern of increase after the demise of D. antillarum. Therefore, interspecific competition directed towards D. antillarum juveniles did not increase after the mass mortality. Two reefs where Echinometra viridis, Eucidaris tribuloides and Lytechinus williamsi, were removed showed no significant differences in recruitment of D. antillarum relative to two reefs where these species were allowed to remain at their natural densities. Resident D. antillarum after the mass mortality produced gametes with the same per capita intensity and lunar synchrony as before the mass mortality. However, it is possible that the probability of fertilization of their gametes decreased because of low population density. The most likely explanation for lack of recruitment is that the reduced numbers of reproducing adults at Panamá and upstream locations resulted in levels of larval supply that were inadequate to sustain recruitment on Panamanian reefs.  相似文献

Observations on the subtidal seastar Pisaster brevispinus (Stimpson) indicate that this predator can extend the central tube feet into sand-mud substrate for a distance roughly equal to the radius of the seastar. Field and laboratory evidence demonstrates the use of the elongated tube feet by the asteroid for the capture of burrowed prey items. A relationship between predator size and the size of juveniles of the deep-burrowing clam Tresus nuttallii taken as prey is a product of the ability of larger seastars to extend the tube feet further into the substrate and capture deeper prey. The role of P. brevispinus as an important subtidal predator along the Pacific Coast of North America is discussed.  相似文献

Symbiotic filamentous bacteria thrive in the intestinal caecum of the deposit-feeding echinoid Echinocardium cordatum. Specimens of E. cordatum were collected at Wimereux (Nord Pas-de-Calais, France) in 1991. Their symbiotic bacteria build nodules by forming multilayered mats around detrital particles that enter the caecum. The morphological features of the bacteria are those of Thiothrix, a sulfide-oxidizing genus. The filaments, which may form rosettes, are sheathed and made by a succession of hundreds of rod-shaped bacteria which store elemental sulfur in the presence of external sulfide. Live bacteria are restricted to the outer layers of the nodules. Their sulfide-oxidizing activity was investigated, using a Biological Oxygen Monitor, by measuring the O2-consumption when reduced sulfur compounds are provided. They oxidize thiosulfate and sulfide. Optimal sulfide oxidation occurs at intermediary pO2 (100 to 160 M O2l-1). Spectrophotometry has confirmed that the sulfur content of the filamentous symbiotic sulfideoxidizing bacteria depends on the presence of external sulfide. This is the first report of symbiotic intradigestive Thiothrixspp.-like bacteria; it lengthens the list of symbioses between sulfide-oxidizing bacteria and invertebrates from sulfide-rich habitats.  相似文献

The gut contents of specimens of the temperate crinoid Antedon bifida (Pennant) were collected from Dalkey, County Dublin, at monthly intervals for 1 yr, and occasionally from other areas around the Irish coast. Quantitative analysis showed the main components to be detritus (65%), plankton (18%) and inorganic particles (17%). This composition was remarkably constant throughout the year and at all locations, the main variation being in the plankton which was at a minimum in February (4%) and reached a maximum in August (36%). Food particle collection appeared to be nonselective within the appropriate size group, the essential feature of a particle being that it would fit into the ambulacral groove. Fragile planktonic diatoms and dinoflagellates, which occurred in blooms in summer and autumn, were digested by A. bifida, but more robust diatoms passed intact through the gut. Histochemical investigations indicate that the bulk of the detritus is refractory, and it is suggested that its associated micro-flora and micro-fauna may be a major source of nutriment for this crinoid.  相似文献

This study documents the annual reproductive cycle of the Temnopleurid echinoid Holopneustes purpurascens near Sydney. H. purpurascens reached sexual maturity between 11 and 26 mm diameter and was gonochoristic. The sequence of oogenesis was similar to previously described echinoids. However, the proportion of eggs at each stage showed no temporal pattern in abundance, suggesting that vitellogenesis is continuous throughout the year. Spermatogenesis was also similar to other echinoids and showed a significant increase in the proportion of partially spawned testes in spring, followed by a similar increase in the proportion of partially spawned testes in late spring and summer. Gonad indices showed a peak in weight from late winter to mid-spring (9.10ǃ.47 for females; 6.28ǂ.43 for males; mean-SE), then a decline for both sexes. Although spawning was variable over time, there was a peak in the proportion of spawning from late winter to early summer that correlated with the observed peaks in gonad indices and gametogenic cycles. The demographic implications of this reproductive pattern are that new recruits can enter the population through synchronous spawning during the breeding period, and smaller haphazard spawning events at other times of the year.  相似文献

A major adaptive problem among comatulid crinoids is the need for a system of articulation and muscularization of the skeleton which provides rigidity in the cirri, arms, and pinnules for maintaining position and feeding in moving water masses, and also the ability to undergo occasional rapid flexions. Most skeletal ossicles of comatulids are united by so-called ligament fibers, while arm articulations possess masses of muscle as well as ligament. Light and electron microscopic work shows that the ligament consists primarily of collagen fibers. Similarity of this dual system of crinoid arm musculature to the muscles and collagenous catch apparatus of echinoid spines suggests that the crinoid ligaments may provide the needed rigidity to the crinoid skeleton, in a manner similar to that by which the echinoid catch apparatus can hold the spine tightly to the test in one position.  相似文献

A mass synchronous spawning of the sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus (Valenciennes) was observed in situ in Doubtful Sound, a large New Zealand fiord. Spawning occurred between 17:30 hrs and 18:30 hrs on 27 January 1994 and coincided with a full moon, spring tides and a period of decreasing sea temperatures. During spawning, the sea urchins formed a dense spawning aggregation of both sexes, with >90% of the urchins observed spawning at the time. Spawned gametes clouded the water column, and some were eaten by small labrid fish species. The spawning, which may have been as widespread as 40 km, marked a 42 to 50% decrease in gonad indices and resulted in a widespread, dense cohort of  E. chloroticus larvae within the fiord. Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) uptake by marine phytoplankton   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The time-courses of uptake for 2,4,5,2,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB) by 11 marine phytoplankton species were measured and found to be rapid, with equilibration occurring within 0.5 to 2.0 h. These data were described with the empirical Freundlich adsorption isotherm. The relationship between cell density and accumulation of PCBs was also investigated. Concentration factors on a volume per volume basis ranged from 1.23x104 to 2.41x106 for the 11 algal species examined. These values are comparable in magnitude to factors reported previously for phytoplankton in natural marine systems.  相似文献

We describe the first molecular and morphological analysis of extant crinoid high-level inter-relationships. Nuclear and mitochondrial gene sequences and a cladistically coded matrix of 30 morphological characters are presented, and analysed by phylogenetic methods. The molecular data were compiled from concatenated nuclear-encoded 18S rDNA, internal transcribed spacer 1, 5.8S rDNA, and internal transcribed spacer 2, together with part of mitochondrial 16S rDNA, and comprised 3,593 sites, of which 313 were parsimony-informative. The molecular and morphological analyses include data from the bourgueticrinid Bathycrinus; the antedonid comatulids Dorometra and Florometra; the cyrtocrinids Cyathidium, Gymnocrinus, and Holopus; the isocrinids Endoxocrinus, and two species of Metacrinus; as well as from Guillecrinus and Caledonicrinus, whose ordinal relationships are uncertain, together with morphological data from Proisocrinus. Because the molecular data include indel-rich regions, special attention was given to alignment procedure, and it was found that relatively low, gene-specific, gap penalties gave alignments from which congruent phylogenetic information was obtained from both well-aligned, indel-poor and potentially misaligned, indel-rich regions. The different sequence data partitions also gave essentially congruent results. The overall direction of evolution in the gene trees remains uncertain: an asteroid outgroup places the root on the branch adjacent to the slowly evolving isocrinids (consistent with palaeontological order of first appearances), but maximum likelihood analysis with a molecular clock places it elsewhere. Despite lineage-specific rate differences, the clock model was not excluded by a likelihood ratio test. Morphological analyses were unrooted. All analyses identified three clades, two of them generally well-supported. One well-supported clade (BCG) unites Bathycrinus and Guillecrinus with the representative (chimaeric) comatulid in a derived position, suggesting that comatulids originated from a sessile, stalked ancestor. In this connection it is noted that because the comatulid centrodorsal ossicle originates ontogenetically from the column, it is not strictly correct to describe comatulids as unstalked crinoids. A second, uniformly well-supported clade contains members of the Isocrinida, while the third clade contains Gymnocrinus, a well-established member of the Cyrtocrinida, together with the problematic taxon Caledonicrinus, currently classified as a bourgueticrinid. Another cyrtocrinid, Holopus, joins this clade with only weak molecular, but strong morphological support. In one morphological analysis Proisocrinus is weakly attached to the isocrinid clade. Only an unusual, divergent 18S rDNA sequence was obtained from the morphologically strange cyrtocrinid Cyathidium. Although not analysed in detail, features of this sequence suggested that it may be a PCR artefact, so that the apparently basal position of this taxon requires confirmation. If not an artefact, Cyathidium either diverged from the crinoid stem much earlier than has been recognised hitherto (i.e., it may be a Palaeozoic relic), or it has an atypically high rate of molecular evolution.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at Communicated by J.P. Quiescent Cuvierian tubules of Holothuria forskali (Delle Chiaje, 1823) have a pseudostratified mesothelium made of ciliated cells that cover elongated cells containing lipoproteie granules. Together these cells form conspicuous transversal folds that penetrate the underlaying connective tissue. Circular and longitudinal muscle cells occur under the tips of the mesothelial folds. These cells are presumably myoepithelial cells; they divide the connective tissue into a thin outer layer (where collagen fibers are directed perpendicularly to the tubule long axis) and a thick inner layer (where collagen fibers are arranged in helices parallel to the tubular long axis). Nerve processes are associated with the longitudinal muscles; they also occur between the spirally arranged collagen fibers. A spiral nerve runs along the tubules; it innervates the circular muscles. The tubule lumen is narrow with a highly convoluted limiting epithelium. Epithelial cells are not ciliated; they have basal processes that contain enlarged spherules including mucosubstances and proteins. While having the same diameter as quiescent tubules, elongated tubules have a much thiner wall surrounding an enlarged cylindrical lumen. The mesothelium has no adluminal cells and consists of unfolded granular cells. In contact with a solid surface, granules become a sticky secretion. Longitudinal muscle fibers disintegrate and circular fibers form conspicuous rings along the tubules. Collagen helices still occur, but are considerably elongated and flattened. Inner epithelial cells dissociate from each other and typically lack basal processes and spherules, the latter being secreted into the lumen of elongating tubules. Discharge of Cuvierian tubules results from tubule expulsion and elongation. Tubule expulsion is triggered by the opening of the anus of a contracted holothuroid and results from the rupture of the cloaca with subsequent expulsion of coelomic fluid. Tubule elongation results both from the mechanical stimulation of the tubule sphincter by hydrostatic pressure and the entry of water into the tubule. Mechanical stimulation of the sphincter results in a rapid contraction of the circular muscles that causes the disintegration of adluminal cells, the unfolding of granular cells and the stretching of inner epithelial cells. Entry of water immediately follows sphincter stimulation and complete tubule elongation. Water pressure causes the irreversible elongation of collagen helices, which results both in a considerable thinning of the tubule wall and the formation of enlarged water-filled lumen. It is suggested that slippage of collagen fibers in elongating tubules is nervously mediated.  相似文献

Fifteen species of reproductively mature echinoderms (11 sea stars, 3 sea urchins, 1 sea cucumber) were collected from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, during austral spring and summer of 1985 and 1986; eggs and embryos were obtained, and were tested for ichthyonoxicity using the common marine killifishFundulus grandis as a model predator. Chemical deterrents occurred in the large, yolky eggs of the pelagic lecithotrophic sea starPerknaster fuscus and the planktotrophic sea starPorania antarctica. Brooded embryos of the sea starsDiplasterias brucei andNotasterias armata were also noxious. Significant ichthyonoxicity was not detected in the remaining 7 species of sea stars, 3 sea urchins, and 1 sea cucumber. Chemical deterrents were generally effective at concentrations below a single egg or embryo per agar test-pellet. Although chemicals found in these eggs and embryos are noxious to an allopatric fish, they may not be noxious to sympatric fish.  相似文献

The six-rayed starfish Leptasterias hexactis (Stimpson, 1862) is seasonally exposed to low salinities in southeastern Alaska. Individuals that were gradually exposed to reduced salinities in the laboratory had a 28-d TLm of 12.9 S. The activity of L. hexactis, as measured by its activity coefficient, varied directly with salinity. Individual feeding rates of the starfish on similarly exposed Mytilus edulis, measured daily for 21 d at salinities of 30, 20 and 15 S, also varied directly with salinity. The dry weight of mussel tissue consumed was 8.84, 8.49 and 0.58 mg ·starfish-1·d-1 at 20, 20 and 15 S. Expressed as percent of dry starfish weight, the daily feeding rate was 1.35, 0.76 and 0.10% at 30, 20 and 15 S. Absorption efficiency decreased from 64% at 30 S to 49% at 20 S, further reducing the energy available for metabolism. Growth, measured in terms of changes in total dry weight or dry weight of soft tissues, also varied directly with salinity. Although exposure to hyposmotic conditions did induce stress responses, as indicated by reductions in activity, feeding, absorption efficiency and growth rates, L. hexactis maintained positive growth for at least a 3-wk period in the laboratory at 20 S and 13°CC. The population of L. hexactis investigated must be considered euryhaline and brief periods of exposure to hyposmotic conditions should not limit its distribution.  相似文献

Spawning behaviors observed from May 1981 through August 1983 in the laboratory and field are described and compared for twelve species of northeast Pacific holothuroids collected from waters of the San Juan Archipelago, Washington. For many species, elevation of the anterior end, stretching of the introvert, tentacle waving, and swaying are behaviors commonly associated with gamete release. Less common activities include waving of introvert podia, waves of body wall contractions, errant males, aggregations, and pseudocopulation. Positively buoyant eggs of four species [Psolus chitonoides Clark, Cucumaria miniata (Brandt), C. piperata (Stimpson), and C. fallax (Ludwig)] were packaged in pellets, ropes, or strands and released passively; a female Molpadia intermedia (Ludwig) discharged negatively buoyant eggs in a single explosive burst. Two externally brooding sea cucumbers [C. lubrica (Clark) and C. pseudocurata Deichmann] produced strands of dilution-resistant sperm that were carried by currents to nearby females. Three species commonly sympatric [P. chitonoides, C. miniata, and Eupentacta quinquesemita (Selenka)] in high-current rocky habitats have overlapping spring breeding seasons, but spawn at different hours of the day. Please address all requests for reprints to Dr. McEuen at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution  相似文献

The dendrochirote holothurian Aslia lefevrei (Barrois) is locally and densely aggregated (>70 individuals m-2) in Galway Bay, on the west coast of Ireland. It has a discrete, relatively short breeding period from the end of February to the beginning of April, with peak activity in March. The sexes are separate and the single gonad, consisting of numerous tubules (100 to 800), lies in the anterior coelom. Both gonad index values and histological observations indicate that gametogenesis resumes in June/July after a brief post-spawned resting period. Little oocyte growth and sperm production occurs over the warm summer months when the holothurian is actively feeding. Gonad index values, however, increase rapidly during this period and reach high values by early winter without concomitant increases in maturity indices. This is subsequently followed by slight reductions in the gonad indices, before reaching peak values in February. It is suggested that this is probably due to the initial build-up and subsequent assimilation of storage products in the gonad, the development of gametogenic products and the frequent assimilation thereafter of unwanted ova. Spawning generally takes between 5 and 60 min, with the entire contents of the gonad rarely being shed in a single release. During this process, the holothurian raises its anterior end and, with the extended tentacles close together, emits a stream of gametes from the genital pore in the mid-dorsal line. Laboratory experiments and general observations indicate that increased temperature and low light levels may influence spawning behaviour.Contribution No. 248 to the School of Marine Sciences, University College Galway, Ireland  相似文献
