Many prey organisms respond to predator scent by shifting behaviour. These alterations to behaviour are often assumed to increase an animal's chances of evading predators. Responsiveness to predator scents is therefore believed to ultimately increase a prey's chances of surviving encounters with predators. This notion is widely accepted among behavioural ecologists but has rarely been empirically tested. I staged encounters between adult snakes (Demansia psammophis) and pairs of unrestrained adult lizards (Lampropholis guichenoti) that responded strongly to snake predator scent ("responsive") or weakly to snake predator scent ("non-responsive"). Responsive lizards decreased activity and mobility during the staged encounters with snake predators. In turn this shift in behaviour decreased the chances that snakes detected responsive lizards. Since snakes almost always captured lizards that were detected, responding strongly to predator scent decreased a lizard's chances of being captured by predators. This finding is the first experimental demonstration in any terrestrial animal that responsiveness to predator scents can function to increase survival probability. 相似文献

The incidence of cannibalism of larval Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on maize under field conditions was investigated using field cages. Cannibalism was found to account
for approximately 40% mortality when maize plants were infested with two or four fourth-instar larvae over a 3-day period.
Field trials examined the effect of larval density on the prevalence of natural enemies of S. frugiperda. The abundance of predators (earwigs, staphylinids, other predatory beetles, and Chrysoperla spp.) was significantly greater on maize plants with higher levels of larval feeding damage, while the relationship between
predator abundance and number of S. frugiperda larvae per plant was less clear. As larval damage is probably a more reliable indicator of previous larval density than numbers
collected at an evaluation, this indicates that predation risk will be greater for larvae living in large groups. Parasitism
accounted for 7.1% mortality of larvae in sorghum, and involved six species of Hymenoptera and Tachinidae. There was no effect
of larval density or within-plant distribution on the probability of larval attack by parasitoids. The selective benefits
of cannibalism, in relation to the risk of predation and parasitism, are discussed.

This paper aimed to confirm the hypothesis that rates of ammonification and net mineral-N production in soils under grass in summer are low and this, rather than nitrate uptake by plants, reduces mineral leaching from soils in summer. Six sets of soil samples were collected from under mown grass on the University of York campus in the UK. Samples were taken from two depths in late summer (August) and late autumn (November) to compare seasonal differences in N species transformations when field-moist soils were incubated for a week at ambient outdoor temperatures after prior removal of vegetation. Ammonification and net mineral-N production rates were low in August in spite of warm temperatures. Net mineral-N production rates were also low in November. The results agreed with those of an earlier study in a different year after considering weather differences between years. They support the hypothesis that litter accumulated over autumn/winter will be minimally mineralised and retain N before the temperature rises in spring. The study shows the merit of measuring concentrations of mineral-N species in both fresh soils and soils incubated at ambient outdoor temperatures after removing plant material to eliminate plant N uptake effects. The results suggest that soil C% and N% are more important than soil C:N ratio alone in understanding controls on N transformations. 相似文献

Male mating experience was shown to play an important role in settling conflicts between males; however, little is known about whether and how prior access to females influences male behavior during intersexual interactions and female choice itself. Here, I experimentally test this relationship in the house cricket (Acheta domesticus) by combining one-on-one interaction between the male and female with direct comparison of males by the female, but precluding aggression between males. I found that solitary males were more active during subsequent courtship displays than paired males, suggesting the detrimental effect of mating on courtship performance. At the same time, females spent significantly more time close to solitary males or playbacks of male's natural courtship songs, and responded positively to the condition of males, ignoring body size of males. In contrast, females responded similarly to computer-modified playbacks of courtship songs of solitary and paired males with standardized rate of phrases and amplitudes; however, when females were additionally allowed to contact with anesthetized males they spent more time close to bigger males, irrespective of the acoustic parameters of courtship songs. These results show that although females were able to differentiate between many behavioral and morphological characteristics of males, including voluntary and intrinsic ones, they preferred traits conditional upon the costliness of male's displays. In addition, mating experience appeared to be a crucial factor in the choice of a particular costly mating strategy by males. 相似文献

Developing countries, including China, are just beginning to figure out how to balance economic development with the desire to address numerous severe environmental problems. In this paper, we use two enterprise-level data sets – China's Environmental Statistics Database and China's Industrial Enterprise Database – to estimate the impact of a more stringent wastewater discharge standard imposed on all the textile printing and dyeing enterprises in the Lake Tai, Jiangsu region, on labor demand. We find that enterprises which face this new more stringent standard decreased labor demand by approximately 7%. Furthermore, we find that the new standard had heterogeneous impacts on different types of enterprises. For example, our results indicate that the more stringent discharge standard reduced employment in domestically-owned private enterprises by 7.4%, but had little or no impact on state-owned or foreign-owned enterprises. 相似文献

Microbial and environmental effects on avian egg viability: do tropical mechanisms act in a temperate environment? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The viability of freshly laid avian eggs declines after several days of exposure to ambient temperatures above physiological zero, and declines occur faster in tropical than temperate ecosystems. Microbial infection during preincubation exposure has recently been shown as a second cause of egg viability decline in the tropics, but whether microbial processes influence the viability of wild bird eggs in temperate ecosystems is unknown. We determined the microbial load on eggshells, the incidence of microbial penetration of egg contents, and changes in the viability of wild bird eggs (Sialia mexicana, Tachycineta bicolor, Tachycineta thalassina) experimentally exposed to temperate-zone ambient conditions in situ in a mediterranean climate in northern California. Initial microbial loads on eggshells were generally low, although they were significantly higher on eggs laid in old boxes than in new boxes. Eggshell microbial loads did not increase with exposure to ambient conditions, were not reduced by twice-daily disinfection with alcohol, and were unaffected by parental incubation. The rate of microbial penetration into egg contents was low and unaffected by the duration of exposure. Nevertheless, egg viability declined very gradually and significantly with exposure duration, and the rate of decline differed among species. In contrast to studies performed in the tropics, we found little evidence that temperature or microbial mechanisms of egg viability decline were important at our temperate-zone site; neither temperatures above physiological zero nor alcohol disinfection was significantly related to hatching success. Delaying the onset of incubation until the penultimate or last egg of a clutch at our study site may maintain hatching synchrony without a large trade-off in egg viability. These results provide insight into the environmental mechanisms that may be responsible for large-scale latitudinal patterns in avian clutch size and hatching asynchrony. 相似文献

A reduced predation risk is considered to be a major adaptive advantage of sociality. While most studies are concerned with non-predatory prey species, group-living predators are likely to face similar threats from higher-order predators. We studied the relationship between group size and predation risk in the subsocial crab spider Diaea ergandros by testing predictions from theoretical models including attack abatement as well as the formation of protective retreats. In a field survey, we found predatory clubionid spiders in 35 % of the D. ergandros nests and as predicted, nest size did not correlate with predator presence. In a subsequent laboratory experiment, we observed survival probability, nest construction activity and feeding behaviour including weight development between groups of different sizes as well as in the absence or presence of a predator. Large groups had an advantage in terms of survival and growth compared to smaller groups or single individuals. They also built significantly larger nests than smaller groups, supporting the idea of protective retreat formation being an adaptive benefit to group living. Even though clubionids did attack D. ergandros, they did not significantly affect overall mortality of D. ergandros. The feeding experiment showed that spiders fed on a larger proportion of flies in the presence of a predator. However, these groups gained significantly less weight compared to the control groups, indicating that the potential predators not only act as predators but also as food competitors, constituting a twofold cost for D. ergandros. 相似文献

Summary. Nickel hyperaccumulator plants contain unusually elevated levels of Ni (>1,000 mg Ni kg−1). The high Ni concentration of hyperaccumulator tissues may affect ecosystem processes such as decomposition, but this has
yet to be studied under field conditions. We used Senecio coronatus Thunb. (Harv.) from two pairs of serpentine sites: one member of each pair contained a hyperaccumulator population and the
other a non-hyperaccumulator population. Our main goal was to determine if leaf Ni status (hyperaccumulator or non-hyperaccumulator)
affected leaf decomposition rate on serpentine sites. We also used a non-serpentine site on which leaves from all four S. coronatus populations were placed to compare decomposition at a single location. Dried leaf fragments were put into fine-mesh (0.1 mm)
nylon decomposition bags and placed on field sites in mid-summer (early February) 2000. Sets of bags were recovered after
1, 3.5, and 8 months, their contents dried and weighed, and the Ni concentration and total Ni content of high-Ni leaves was
measured. For the serpentine sites, there was no significant effect of leaf Ni status or site type on decomposition rates
at 1 and 3.5 months. By 8 months, leaf Ni status and site type significantly influenced decomposition on one pair of sites:
hyperaccumulator leaves decomposed more slowly than non-hyperaccumulator leaves, and leaves of both types decomposed more
slowly on the non-hyperaccumulator site. At the non-serpentine site, the highest-Ni leaves (15,000 mg Ni kg−1) decomposed more slowly than all others, but leaves containing 9,200 mg Ni kg−1 did not decompose more slowly than non-hyperaccumulator leaves. Nickel in decomposing hyperaccumulator leaves was released
rapidly: after 1 month 57–68% of biomass was lost and only 9–28% of original Ni content remained. We conclude that very high
(>10,000 mg Ni kg−1) leaf Ni concentrations may slow decomposition and that Ni is released at high rates that may impact co-occurring litter-
and soil-dwelling organisms. 相似文献

We show that for a broad class of technologies the relationship between policy stringency and the rate of technology adoption is inverted U-shaped. This happens when the marginal abatement cost (MAC) curves of conventional and new technologies intersect, which invariably occurs when emissions are proportional to output and technological progress reduces emissions per output. This outcome does not result from policy failure. On the contrary, in social optimum, the relationship between the slope of the marginal damage curve and the rate of technology adoption is also inverted U-shaped. Under more general conditions, these curves can look even more complicated (e.g., such as inverted W-shaped). 相似文献

Lizards and birds are both popular ”model organisms” in behavioural ecology, but the interactions between them have attracted
little study. Given the putative importance of birds as predators of diurnal lizards, it is of considerable interest to know
which traits (of lizards as well as birds) influence the outcome of a predatory attempt. We studied predation by giant terrestrial
kingfishers (kookaburras, Dacelo novaeguineae: Alcedinidae) on heliothermic diurnal lizards (highland water skinks, Eulamprus tympanum: Scincidae), with particular reference to the role of prey (lizard) size. Our approach was twofold: to gather direct evidence
(sizes of lizards consumed in the field, compared to those available) and indirect evidence (size-related shifts in lizard
behaviour). We quantified the size structure of a natural population of skinks (determined by an extensive mark-recapture
program), and compared it to the sizes of wild lizards taken by kookaburras (determined by analysis of prey remains left at
the birds’ nests). Kookaburras showed size-based predation: they preyed mainly on small and medium-sized rather than large
lizards in the field. However, the mechanism producing this bias remains elusive. It is not due to any distinctive behavioural
attributes (locomotor ability, activity level, habitat usage) of the lizards of the size class disproportionately taken by
the kookaburras. The greater vulnerability of subadult lizards may reflect subtle ontogenetic shifts in ecological and behavioural
traits, but our data suggest that great caution is needed in inferring patterns of vulnerability to predation from indirect
measures based on either the prey or the predator alone. Instead, we need direct observations on the interaction between the
two.

In several vertebrate taxa, males and females differ in the proportions of time they individually devote to vigilance, commonly
attributed to sex differences in intra-specific competition or in absolute energy requirements. However, an effect of sex
on collective vigilance is less often studied (and therefore rarely predicted), despite being relevant to any consideration
of the adaptiveness of mixed- vs single-sex grouping. Controlling for group size, we studied the effect of sex on vigilance
in the sexually dimorphic eastern grey kangaroo Macropus giganteus, analysing vigilance at two structural levels: individual vigilance and the group’s collective vigilance. Knowing that group
members in this species tend to synchronise their bouts of vigilance, we tested (for the first time) whether sex affects the
degree of synchrony between group members. We found that females were individually more vigilant than males and that their
vigilance rate was unaffected by the presence of males. Collective vigilance did not differ between female-only and mixed-sex
groups of the same size. Vigilance in mixed-sex groups was neither more nor less synchronous than in single-sex groups of
females, and the presence of males seemed not to affect the degree of synchrony between females. Sixty-six percent of vigilant
acts were unique (performed when no other kangaroo was alert), and only about one unique vigilant act in every three induced
a collective wave of vigilance. The proportions of vigilant acts that were unique were 60% for females but only 46% for males.
However, the sexes differed little in the rates at which their unique vigilant acts were copied. This limited study shows
that the differences in vigilance between male and female kangaroos had no discernible effect upon collective vigilance. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the spatio-temporal diffusion of rooftop household photovoltaic installations in Germany and to test whether localized imitation drives their adoption. Our study is based on a unique data set of some 576,000 household photovoltaic systems installed in Germany through 2009. We employ an epidemic diffusion model which includes a spatial dimension, and control for temporal and spatial heterogeneity. According to our results, imitative adoption behavior is highly localized and an important factor for the diffusion of household photovoltaic systems. 相似文献

Eelgrass, Zostera marina, produces two types of shoots: morphologically simple vegetative shoots and highly branched flowering (reproductive) shoots,
the latter found only in summer months. We examined whether the abundance and diversity of mobile epifaunal assemblage are
affected by the presence of flowering shoots in an eelgrass meadow of Otsuchi Bay, northeastern Japan. Comparisons of epifauna
in natural vegetation revealed that density and species richness did not differ significantly between sites consisting of
both flowering and vegetative shoots, and those only of vegetative shoots. A transplant experiment, conducted to examine the
colonization rates of epifauna to defaunated eelgrass planted with different combination of vegetative and flowering shoots,
showed no obvious variation in abundance and species richness. At species level, the density of some species such as a tanaid
Zeuxo sp. and a polychaete Platynereis sp. was higher at sites and/or treatments with flowering shoots, whereas that of some gastropods, such as Lirularia iridescens and Siphonacmea oblongata was higher at sites without flowering shoots. The species-specific response led to dissimilarity of epifaunal assemblage
between sites and among treatments with different densities of vegetative and flowering shoots. Similar patterns observed
for natural vegetation and the transplant experiment suggest that the variation in assemblage structure is caused by habitat
selection of each species, for example, the utilization of flowering shoots as feeding ground and nursery by Zeuxo sp. 相似文献

Much of the theoretical work on the evolution of begging assumes this elaborate display is costly. The evidence for an energetic cost to begging has, however, been equivocal. Metabolic studies on nestling birds suggest that begging requires minimal energy, but some growth studies have shown that excess begging reduces growth rates. One difficulty in interpreting these results is that metabolic and growth studies have each been performed on different species. Here, we test whether high begging frequencies depress growth in nestling tree swallows, Tachycineta bicolor, a species in which the metabolic cost of begging has been measured. When we compared the growth of nestlings stimulated to beg at either high or low frequencies, we found no significant differences in their mass gained, wing growth or portion of ingested energy devoted to begging either during the experimental period or in the 24 h following the end of the experiment. We also found no significant relationship between begging intensity and growth measurements. The results of our study are consistent with previous metabolic studies on this species suggesting that the energetic cost of begging is relatively low. More generally, evidence for a fitness cost of begging via decreased growth is equivocal.Communicated by J. Dickinson 相似文献

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Southeastern Atlantic Ocean (International Whaling Commission ‘Breeding Stock B’—BSB) are distributed from the Gulf of Guinea to Western South Africa. Genetic data suggest that this stock may be sub-structured, but it remains unknown if this is due to reproductive segregation. This paper evaluates the spatial and temporal population structure of BSB humpback whales using a combination of maternally and bi-parentally inherited markers. The genetic differentiation that we identify in this study could be due to a combination of (1) spatial and/or temporal segregation on breeding grounds in the greater Gulf of Guinea, (2) the possibility of maternally inherited site fidelity to specific feeding grounds and (3) the use of two generalized but exclusive migratory routes (coastal and offshore) between feeding and breeding areas. Further, photo-identification and genetic sampling efforts in other areas of the Sub-Saharan Western Africa winter range and targeted deployment of satellite tags would help to clarify some of the apparent complexity in the population structure of animals biopsied in this region. 相似文献

Vigilance often decreases with increasing group size, due to lower predation risk or greater scramble competition for food.
A group size effect on vigilance is seldom seen in primates, perhaps because scanning and feeding often occur simultaneously
or because the distinction between routine and induced vigilance has not been investigated. We analyzed feeding and resting
observations separately while distinguishing between routine and induced scans in four groups of wild ursine colobus monkeys
(Colobus vellerosus) experiencing scramble competition for food and infanticide risk. We used linear mixed-effect models to test the effect of
group size, age–sex class, number of neighbors, number of adult male neighbors, and height in the canopy on scanning rates
(vigilance) with and without evident conspecific threat. Food type was also examined in the feeding models. Perceived predation
risk affected vigilance more than scramble competition for food and infanticide risk. Routine and induced vigilance were greatest
at lower canopy heights during feeding and resting and increased when individuals had fewer neighbors while resting. A group
size effect was found on induced vigilance while resting, but scanning increased with group size, which probably indicates
visual monitoring of conspecifics. Scanning rates decreased while feeding on foods that required extensive manipulation. This
supports the idea that vigilance is relatively cost free for upright feeders when eating food that requires little manipulation,
a common feature of folivore diets. In the presence of threatening conspecific males, close proximity to resident males decreased
individual vigilance, demonstrating the defensive role of these males in the group. 相似文献
